The ongoing battle of words between the United States and North Korea has been ramping up for some time. It’s difficult to know how serious the situation is, as some of it has been fought on Twitter, with President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un taking shots at each other about “nuclear buttons.”

Now, however, one scientist says the threat is real. Sig Hecker, the former director of Los Alamos National Laboratory, has visited North Korea seven times and says he’s seen evidence that they have been progressing their nuclear weapons program; he estimates that the country has between 30 and 60 nuclear weapons available.

That’s shocking news, to say the least.

The Visits
Hecker was invited to visit Yongbyon, the secretive North Korean nuclear facility, in 2004. Since then, he has been back six more times to view their progress.

He spoke with CBS’ 60 Minutes on Sunday:

They bring in, and it’s a red metal box about yea big, about this thick. They open the metal box. They take out a white wooden box. White wooden box has a slide off top. So they slide off the top. I look in there. The director says, “Over here, this glass jar. That’s our product. That’s the plutonium.

Hecker would know plutonium when he sees it; as the man formerly responsible for United States nuclear development, he’s well-versed in what to look for.

The scientist says the box handed to him was real.

Robert Carlin, a former CIA employee who has studied the North Koreans for over 40 years, says the strange idea of North Korea showing an American scientist their nuclear secrets isn’t so strange after all.

Nobody would believe them otherwise, right? People would say, “Oh, they’re just posturing. Oh, it’s propaganda.” So how are you going to convince the Americans? You get an expert who knows plutonium when he sees it and you, you hand it to him. You say, “Here it is. What do you think?”

What Does It All Mean?
Secretary of Defense James Mattis has said the U.S. cannot accept North Korea as a nuclear power.

Kim Jong Un has responded by declaring that North Korea will never give up its program and will continue to see the United States as its biggest threat.

Carlin says there’s a basic misunderstanding in Washington about how to view the North Korean nuclear debate.

“I think they understand us better than we understand them” he told the Daily Mail. “We’re still weighed down with a lot of stereotypes and they’re going to trip us up.”

The situation is clearly a tense one and hopefully, leaders of both countries can arrive at a reasonable path for moving forward.

Russia has sparked fears of a potential war looming as thousands of troops simulated a deadly attack during huge military drills. Pictures from the Khmelyovka training ground show soldiers in a massive range of war scenarios, including detonating weapons on the battlefield. Huge explosions are seen in some of the photos, blasting sand from the beach as fireball erupted.

Troops were seen testing out UR-77 Meteroit mine clearing systems, or working with an array of pistols and guns. And flares filled the air with smoke as soldiers advanced on their targets under the cover of the thick black plumes. The drills involved more than1,000 soldiers, including the engineer and sapper units of the Russian Navy’s Baltic Fleet.

South Korea seizes second ship suspected of illegally bringing oil to North Korea
South Korea has seized Another ship suspected of transferring oil to North Korea in violation of international sanctions. The seizure was the second to be revealed by South Korea within a few days. A South Korean customs official said The Panama-flagged tanker, KOTI, was seized at Pyeongtaek-Dangjin port, on the west coast. A marine official said the seizure had happened recently. A foreign ministry spokesman confirmed that an investigation was underway.
He said: “The government has been in close consultations with related countries and ministries to thoroughly implement the sanctions by the UN security council.” On Thursday, China blocked a U.S. effort at the United Nations to blacklist six foreign-flagged ships, a U.N. Security Council diplomat said. China’s Foreign Ministry, responding to a question from Reuters on the blocking, said Beijing always fully and strictly implemented Security Council resolutions.

North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un made a disturbing admission during his New Year’s Day speech.

Kim claimed that North Korea had full nuclear capabilities, calling them a “reality.” He added that he had the nuclear strike button on his desk as proof.

Happy New Year.

Historic achievement?
Kim claimed Monday during his annual address that North Korea had achieved the historic achievement of “completing” its nuclear forces.

Directing his remarks specifically at the United States, he said, according to a translation provided by The Associated Press:

The U.S. should know that the button for nuclear weapons is on my table. The entire area of the U.S. mainland is within our nuclear strike range. … The United States can never start a war against me and our country.

Kim added that the regime wasn’t finished producing and stockpiling weaponry.

“We need to mass-produce nuclear warheads and ballistic missiles and accelerate their deployment,” he said.

The North Korean leader spoke in front of several microphones, but no nuclear button could be discerned in the footage.

Mounting tensions
Tests initiated by the regime have escalated tensions within the region, and have caused concern in South Korea and Japan — both loyal U.S. allies. Fox News reported:

Pyongyang’s frequent missile launches in 2017, along with its sixth nuclear test, have ratcheted up tensions with the United States. The tests were the focus of fiery back-and-forth arguments between North Korea and President Donald Trump, who has called Kim “Little Rocket Man.”

Olive branch
Kim tempered his saber-rattling with an olive branch, purportedly offered to indicate a desire to improve relations with South Korea. This has been a matter of concern lately, given that South Korea is scheduled to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. He indicated that the games could provide an opportunity for North Korea to send a delegation.

“The Winter Olympic games that will be held soon in the South will be a good opportunity to display the status of the Korean nation and we sincerely wish that the event will be held with good results,” he said.

Given recent defections to the south by North Korean soldiers, it’s doubtful that the regime will ever send a delegation. Its members would also more than likely defect and never return.

“We’ll see”
When asked for comment, President Donald Trump characteristically kept his cards close to his vest.

“We’ll see, we’ll see,” he responded when asked while hosting a New Year’s Eve party at his Palm Beach, Fla. Mar-a-Lago estate.

Kim could learn from Trump. If the dictator is to be believed, we now know precisely where the North Korean nuclear button is located — and that’s where we can aim our own arsenal.

Turkey and Russia have signed an accord for Moscow to supply Ankara with S-400 surface-to-air missiles, CNN Turk and other media reported on Friday, finalizing a deal the two countries have been working on for more than a year.  The S-400 deal, reportedly worth about $2.5 billion, has caused concern in the West because Turkey is a member of NATO and the system cannot be integrated into NATO’s military architecture.
It is the latest in a series of moves by Ankara to boost its defense capabilities as it faces threats from Kurdish and Islamist militants at home and conflicts across its borders in Syria and Iraq. No details of the accord were available and officials were not immediately available to comment. But Sergei Chemezov, head of the Russian state conglomerate Rostec, told the Kommersant daily on Wednesday Russia would supply Turkey with four batteries of S-400s under the deal.

North Korea promised on Saturday to continue preparing “pre-emptive attacks with nuclear force” in the face of U.S. “blackmail,” according to The Associated Press. “Do not expect any change in its policy,” the state’s official media arm, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said Saturday. “Its entity as an invincible power can neither be undermined nor be stamped out.” KCNA said North Korea has been working toward “bolstering the capabilities for self-defense and pre-emptive attacks with nuclear force,” in response to ongoing “nuclear threat and blackmail and war drills” by the U.S.
North Korea has tested missiles at least 16 times in 2017, and threatened the use of a hydrogen bomb small enough to fit on a missile. More than one North Korean missile flew into the air space of neighboring Japan, and new models have flown to heights that some military analysts predict could reach the mainland U.S. Increased provocations from North Korea have led to the implementation of crippling sanctions from the United Nations in the form of trade and crude oil bans, and bombastic rhetoric from President Trump.

The crew of a Hong Kong-flagged ship that allegedly violated U.N. sanctions by transferring oil to a North Korean vessel in October is being held in South Korea until a full inspection is sent to the Security Council, officials announced Friday.  The Lighthouse Winmore is believed to have transferred about 600 tons of refined petroleum products to the North Korean ship, the Sam Jong 2, in international waters in the East China Sea on Oct. 19, after leaving the South Korean port of Yeosu,
a South Korean Foreign Ministry official told the Associated Press. The announcement came on the same day Defense Secretary James Mattis told Fox News that he believes the world will exert “increased pressure” on North Korea in the coming months following the recent maritime incidents. South Korean customs authorities said they boarded the ship and interviewed crew members after they returned to Yeosu on Nov. 24.

Kim Jong Un doesn’t seem to get the message; he just keeps ratcheting up tensions on the Korean Peninsula. His latest move has certainly caught the attention of the United States and its allies.
Intelligence reports from South Korea show that the North Koreans are prepared to continue their provocative moves. Despite just being sanctioned by the United Nations at the urging of the U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley, the Kim regime is now planning to launch a satellite into orbit. 
Kim’s New Satellite
Fox News reports:
“Through various channels, we’ve recently learned that the North has completed a new satellite and named it Kwangmyongsong-5,” the Joongang Ilbo daily reported, quoting a South Korean government source.
A satellite is a potential precursor to new missile tests or even a missile test in disguise. It could also be, as the South Koreans expect, a means of launching new reconnaissance technology, such as cameras and telecommunications devices into orbit.
U.N. Sanctions
In response to North Korea’s ballistic missile test, the United Nations voted to sanction North Korea, and the U.N. Security Council voted unanimously to do so. Nikki Haley, Trump’s appointment as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, pushed the vote through the international body.
To no one’s surprise, North Korea was not happy about this development — they called the sanctions an “act of war.” Reuters reports:
The latest U.N. sanctions against North Korea are an act of war and tantamount to a complete economic blockade against it, North Korea’s foreign ministry said on Sunday, threatening to punish those who supported the measure.
North Korea’s ballistic missile launch, which demonstrated that North Korea could reach the continental United States, came after a nuclear warhead test in September of this year. Kim seems to be fixated on attempting to intimidate South Korea, the United States, and other allies in the region.
China, of course, is the exception to this rule.
What’s Next?
How soon would the launch take place? It’s unknown, but as The Right Scoop opines, Kim Jong-Un’s birthday is coming up, and it was celebrated by a launch last year:
The February 2016 launch occurred just days before the birthday of the country’s former leader, Kim Jong-il. It would certainly seem reasonable to expect they are going for the same thing again.
If this prediction is true, the Trump administration has just about a month to prepare its response to Kim Jong Un’s launch. Any effective response, however, requires engaging with China, the only country sympathetic to North Korea in the region.
China seems to use North Korea as both a bargaining chip and a smoke screen.
When it wants to negotiate with Western powers, generally led by the United States, it uses its influence over North Korea as a means of offering up concessions.
In the event that China has done something that the West or the larger international community may not like, North Korea will suddenly ratchet up tensions again and act as a distraction.
That seems odd, given that China is a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council. Especially when the sanctions vote was unanimous, right?
Well, recent reports demonstrate that the Chinese are defying previous UN sanctions which prohibit the sale of oil to North Korea.
The Telegraph reports:
South Korean officials told the Chosun Ilbo that the ships were allegedly trading in the West Sea between China and South Korea in a bid to bypass strict United Nations sanctions on oil exports to the pariah regime over its ongoing nuclear and weapons programme.
Granted, these are probably smugglers. But the Chinese government is the only authority in the area to prevent these illicit actions. If they want it stopped, they can do so.
North Korea ought to be careful.
The last time a U.S. president was this focused on dismantling a regime, the Berlin Wall fell along with the entire U.S.S.R.
South Korean soldiers at the DMZ were able to crawl to Song’s position hours later and carry him to safety. Officials have not confirmed which one of the four defectors is carrying anthrax antibodies.
Analysts have not ruled out the possibility that the North Korean carrier could have been infected on a farm or by working with animals. The World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems for Public Health reports that anthrax on the Korean Peninsula occurs at a “sporadic” rate similar to the U.S.  
In the last 46 years, however, there have been just 236 cases of anthrax reported in the U.S., suggesting that the North Korean defector’s chances of naturally contracting the disease are extremely low.
The apprehensive atmosphere accompanying the recent discovery of an advanced biological warfare system in North Korea occurs just weeks before tens of thousands of international guests are expected to visit South Korea for the 2018 Winter Olympics.
The UN, this time with support from China and Russia, have stepped up sanctions against the rebellious nation in hopes that Kim Jong-Un’s regime will negotiate or limit its expansion of weapons of mass destruction.

U.S. military forces reportedly trained earlier this month for a mission that would put them on North Korean soil, with the objective of “infiltrating” and “removing weapons of mass destruction,” according to foreign military sources.  Revealing photos of a recent exercise, dubbed Warrior Strike IX, show a U.S. military unit known as “The Black Jack Brigade” training alongside their South Korean counterparts at Camp Stanley, in Korea.
The pictures were featured in a post on the unit’s Facebook page. The images show soldiers training with night-vision equipment, armored vehicles and full-face protective gear, including gas masks. Descriptions of the event suggest soldiers practiced for eventualities such as transporting injured comrades and capturing combatants. Japan Building Missile Bases to Confront Rising Threat From China
Japan is building missile bases on islands off the coast of China in a bid to counter the rising threat from its communist neighbor.  The country’s military – which has long been restricted by its post-Second World War pacifist constitution – has been constructing anti-aircraft and anti-ship weapons on Ishigaki, 200 miles from eastern China and just off the coast of Taiwan. It is one of many islands in the Yaeyama archipelago to be garrisoned by the Japanese, with soldiers bringing new weapons and radar technology to the area.
The Japanese army – or Ground Self-Defense Force – told the Wall Street Journal it plans to deploy between 500 and 600 soldiers to Ishigaki to operate a missile system there. It comes after the country announced its intention to buy offensive air-to-surface missiles to counter North Korea’s rising military threat. Defence secretary Itsunori Onodera said the ministry intends to request a special budget for the fiscal year starting April 2018 to purchase long-range cruise missiles to be deployed on fighter jets.

War could break out in the Korean peninsula at “any time” within the next three months, a retired Chinese army general has warned. Lieutenant General Wang Hongguang urged his country to mobilize defenses in anticipation of conflict in the region, amid continued tensions over North Korea‘s nuclear weapons programme. “The war on the Korean Peninsula might break out anytime between now and March next year,”
Lt-Gen Wang told an annual forum hosted by the Chinese Global Times newspaper. He added: “China should be psychologically prepared for a potential Korean war, and the north-east China regions should be mobilized for that.  “Such mobilization is not to launch a war, but for defensive purposes.” Song Zhongping, a Chinese military expert, told the newspaper defensive mobilization would include deploying anti-missile weapons to border areas that could be affected by nearby battles. Humanitarian aid would also be prepared for North Korean refugees, he added.

North Korea is conducting biological weapons experiments to test the possibility of loading anthrax-laden warheads on its intercontinental ballistic missiles, it has been reported.  Japan’s Asahi newspaper reported on Wednesday, citing an unidentified person connected to South Korean intelligence, that North Korea was conducting biological weapons experiments to test the possibility of loading anthrax-laden warheads on its intercontinental ballistic missiles.
The Asahi report said the U.S. government was aware of the tests, which were meant to ascertain whether the anthrax bacteria could survive the high temperatures that occur during warheads re-entry from space. The news that North Korea may have been testing anthrax-laden warheads comes as South Korean President Moon Jae-in is seeking to soothe relations with China and the North before the Winter Olympics in South Korea in February.

In an interview with The Atlantic, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) offered a bold prediction about North Korea. He stated that there is a three in 10 chance of the United States conducting military operations against North Korea if they continue along the path they are on, with that chance jumping to 70 percent if Kim Jong-un and his regime move forward with any more nuclear testing.

Graham isn’t simply speculating, though. He played golf with the president on Sunday and spoke with him about North Korea.

Graham put it this way: in conversations with Trump, the topic of North Korea “comes up all the time.”

A training exercise involving several military aircraft will take place early Tuesday over the D.C. region, authorities said. The North American Aerospace Defense Command and its Continental U.S. NORAD Region will be conducting the exercise, called Falcon Virgo 18-03. It will include an F-16 fighter, a C-21 transport plane and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, which will fly over the D.C. region from about midnight until 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, officials said.
In the event of bad weather, the drill will be moved to Wednesday morning. Continued bad weather will postpone the exercise or it will be canceled, officials said. While Kim Jong Un’s nuclear capabilities are well-known, the North Korean dictator may be engaging in something far more horrific. The two most denounced weapon systems in the world are chemical and biological.

While Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was vilified for engaging in chemical warfare, the North Korean ruler may soon be known for germ warfare. Reportedly, North Korea is building factories and acquiring equipment capable of biological weapons production.

Bio-factories
The United States discovered last month that North Korea now has factory complexes capable of producing microbes — by the ton. New York magazine reported Sunday:

U.S. experts are alarmed by North Korea’s strides toward obtaining the knowledge and equipment needed to produce biological weapons. It’s no secret that North Korea is pursuing a bioweapons program, though it’s usually overshadowed by their drive to develop nuclear weapons.

What’s raised new concerns is North Korea’s development of factories that could be used to produce tons of microbes, and labs focused on genetic modification. North Korea has also sent its scientists to study advanced biotechnology abroad. There’s no evidence that Kim Jong-un has ordered the mass production of biological weapons — but it’s unclear why.

“That the North Koreans have [biological] agents is known, by various means,” a senior U.S. official told The Washington Post in a report published Sunday. “The lingering question is, why have they acquired the materials and developed the science, but not yet produced weapons?”

Secrecy is bio’s hallmark
The official added that unlike the horrific blast of a nuclear device, biological warfare is waged silently and may be undetected until it’s too late.

“If it started tomorrow we might not know it, unless we’re lucky enough to have an informant who happens to be in just the right place,” the official said.

The Post reported:

In a country that is famously secretive, it is perhaps the most carefully guarded secret of all. North Korea consistently denies having a biological warfare program of any kind, and it has worked diligently to keep all evidence of weapons research hidden from sight.

“Unexpected jolt”
Despite the program’s secrecy, Kim provided a glimpse into what North Korea was engaging in two years ago. Accompanied by a state-owned TV camera crew, he toured the new sprawling, two-story Pyongyang Biotechnical Institute.

The claim was that the facility was developing biological pesticides for agricultural use. U.S. analysts who viewed the footage disagreed and got “an unexpected jolt” after reviewing and studying it.

The military-run facility contained machinery and equipment, much of it “banned from sale to North Korea under international sanctions” because of its ability to be used to produce biological weapons. They included fermenters capable of producing live microbes in bulk, and dryers “designed to turn billions of bacterial spores into a fine powder for easy dispersal.”

A strong north wind could silently carry the spores southward, infecting U.S. and South Korean troops and their families as well as the South Korean civilian population.

With that apocalyptic thought in mind, it’s possible that North Korea’s nuclear saber-rattling is little more than a feint.

“They talk openly about their ‘nuclear deterrent,’ but with chemical and biological weapons, it’s different,” Joseph DeTrani, a retired CIA veteran told the Post. “They’ve always played it close to the vest. For them, it’s a real option. But they want to preserve the possibility of deniability.”

North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un has made himself into the great pariah of Asia. This is in no small part due to his refusal to stop testing intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), including those which could carry nuclear warheads to the continental United States.

As frightening as Pyongyang’s missile systems are, test results for the F-35 stealth fighter jet has given Americans cause for hope. Namely, the F-35’s high-tech sensors could detect and track North Korean missiles, giving U.S. anti-missile defense systems a better shot at destroying the missiles while in flight.

“Tactically Significant” Development
John “Bama” Montgomery, a business development manager at Northrup Grumman, one of the largest security companies in the world, says that recently released results of a 2014 test found that the F-35’s Distributed Aperture System (DAS) could track enemy ICBMs and sync the data with anti-ballistic missile systems in South Korea, Japan, and the United States.

The DAS sensors gather data that “would help the other missile-defense gear get a targeting track on a missile more quickly, improving the odds of nailing the shot,” Defense One explains.

“You can give that information to a shooter. The shooter now has information to go and put his information in the right place. Thus, the radar doesn’t have to search. It goes, ‘I know where it is; it’s right there,” said Montgomery.

While the details of the test are classified, Montgomery says it’s a “tactically significant” development:

I can tell you right now that this system, as depicted here, really does help the ballistic missile environment.

From Villain to Hero…?

Prior to this news, the F-35 was synonymous with government waste. The U.S. Air Force initially pitched the state-of-the-art fighter jet as a do-everything fighter.

However, tests have shown over the years that the F-35 is clunky, unnecessary for counterinsurgency operations, and very expensive. So expensive, in fact, that Trump mentioned it specifically in a tweet on reducing military spending a year ago:

Indeed, the F-35, which began its life way back in 2001, is the most expensive defense program in history. The U.S. is expected to dump $1.5 trillion into the fighter jet program over its 55 year lifetime.

Representative Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.), a long-time champion of the F-35, was one of the first to publicize the jet’s anti-ICBM capabilities. This has led some to speculate that the latest news is nothing but a ruse to convince Washington to throw more money at the failed project.

America’s Best Shot?
One of the more unfortunate aspects of America’s anti-ICBM capabilities is that the U.S. military does not yet have a fool-proof way to shoot down ICBMs once they are airborne. This means that military planners have to rely on knocking out the missiles before they leave the launch pad.

Such air attacks, even if they are successful, could lead us into a conventional war, which, in the case of war with North Korea, could cost thousands of civilian lives.

While the most recent reports about North Korea’s ICBM capabilities have tempered fears about a North Korean attack on U.S. soil, the U.S. needs more R & D success stories in order to match growing military threats from North Korea, China, and Russia. Hopefully, the F-35 will be one of them.

Rabbi Warns Rare 9-Hour Rainbow in Taiwan ‘Sign of Our Dangerous Times’
A new record was set last Thursday when two scientists in Taiwan recorded a rainbow that lasted an incredible nine hours. Chou Kun-hsuan and Liu Ching-huang, both professors in the Department of Atmospheric Science at the Chinese Culture University, were observing a rainbow for their studies last week when gradually, they realized that something very unusual was going on. Rainbows typically last much less than an hour, so they were shocked when the colorful phenomenon they were watching so carefully failed to dissipate. According to Chou, the rainbow started at 6:57 AM and lasted until 3:55 PM,
or 8 hours and 58 minutes. If confirmed, this will shatter the previous record set in Wetherby in Yorkshire, United Kingdom on March 14, 1994, which was recorded as lasting from 9 AM to 3 PM, or 6 hours. Rainbows are a powerful symbol in the Torah, the postdiluvian sign of God’s promise to Noah that He would never again destroy the world through flooding. As a nation, we are consuming far more wealth than we are producing, and that is a recipe for national economic suicide. This week we learned that imports from China hit an all-time record high in October, and that was one of the primary reasons why our trade deficit hit a staggering 48.7 billion dollars during that month. Year after year we buy far more stuff from the rest of the world than they buy from us, and this is systematically impoverishing us. Let me put this another way.
The amount of money that leaves our country each month is far greater than the amount of money that comes into it. When you grasp this concept, it becomes easy to understand why major exporting nations such as China have become so wealthy, and why we are drowning in debt. Sadly, most Americans don’t understand the trade deficit, and so they don’t understand how important news like this really is. The Icelandic Ásatrú religion follows the belief systems of the Old Norse religion, or Germanic neo-paganism. The followers worship the ancient Norse gods such as Ódin, Thor and Freyja. There have been no temples to the Norse gods in Iceland for over 900 years, but in 2015, the Ásatrú
Society, re-established in 1972, began construction on a modern temple in Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland. It is expected to be ready for use sometime this summer at a final cost of around $1.25 million. The pagan religion is making a comeback in Iceland, necessitating the construction of the new facility. Established 45 years ago by farmer Sveinbjörn Beinteinsson, the Ásatrú Society initially had 12 members. According to the National Bureau of Statistics in Iceland, there were 2,382 members in 2014; today there are 3,583 members.

Evangelical Support for Israel Declining, Especially Among Millennials
Support for Israel is decreasing among evangelical Christians, particularly among younger generations, a new survey shows a decline borne out of confusion about or indifference to the world’s only Jewish state. Seventy-seven percent of evangelicals ages 65 and older say they support the existence, security and prosperity of Israel, according to a LifeWay Research survey released Monday. Only 58 percent of evangelicals ages 18 to 34 say the same.
The survey was conducted using a web-based utility, a probability-based panel designed to be representative of the American population, measuring the attitudes of 2,002 evangelicals pertaining to Israel from Sept. 20–28. “For the most part, younger evangelicals are indifferent about Israel,” said Scott McConnell, executive director of LifeWay Research. Some say such indifference is the result of how young people view recent geopolitical events and conflicts in the region.
