A supermarket was bombed in St. Petersburg, Russia, on Wednesday in an attack that injured more than a dozen people. But it didn’t take long for Russian President Vladimir Putin to call the event out for what it was.
While addressing military officers at a Moscow ceremony the day after the explosion, Putin referred to the event as a “terrorist attack.”
“Yesterday, there was a terror attack in St. Petersburg,” Putin said in Russian on Thursday, “and just recently, security services prevented another terror attack.”
Investigation opened
Security cameras of the attack depict a man leaving a backpack in a locker within the supermarket, Perekrestok, prior to the blast that injured 13 and sent several to the hospital.
Reports stated that the explosive device uncovered by investigators contained 7 ounces (200 grams) of TNT.
A criminal investigation into the explosion has been opened by the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF).

Not the first time
This is not the first time this year that St. Petersburg has been the site of a deadly attack. A suicide bomber set off an explosive device targeting the city’s metro line on April 3.
The device went off on a commuter train as it was traveling through a tunnel in the heart of the city. BBC reported in April:
The bomb went off at around 14:30 local time after a train left Sennaya Ploshchad station, heading south for Tekhnologichesky Institut on the blue, north-south metro line.
Although the explosion happened in between the two stations the driver continued to Tekhnologichesky Institut to enable victims to be helped more easily. Russia’s investigative committee said this decision may have helped prevent further losses.
The device killed 14 and injured dozens more.
Russia should expect more such attacks
The CEO of a major foreign defense firm, Lt. Col. Michael Waltz, told Fox News Channel’s Trish Reagan that Wednesday’s bombing demonstrates that although the Islamic State has been defeated as a state, it’s not defeated as a movement. He added that Russia should expect more attacks from Islamic extremists.
“Frankly I’m surprised Russia hasn’t been on the receiving end of more of these attacks, given that it sided with the [Bashar al-] Assad regime in Syria, and its airplanes have literally bombed and strafed the Sunni opposition for years now,” he told Reagan, who was filling in for Martha MacCallum on The Story on Thursday.
Waltz added that Russia can expect more attacks given agreements it made with Syria “to expand its presence long-term and permanently.”
Heeding warnings from figures like Waltz, Russia is taking these attacks seriously. The first step in preventing these attacks is recognizing them for what they are.
Say what you will about Putin, but he’s doing just that — and vowing to destroy the Islamic State along the way.
