Minute for Mission: Day of Pentecost - Pentecost Offering
One of the amazing privileges of working with teenagers is collecting their
language - witnessing those moments when they express a profound realization
of who God is or of who they are called to be.
A group of kids on the ground, laying with their heads in a circle.
One such incident happened a few years ago when I was talking with an
underprivileged, unbaptized fifteen-year- old who had been coming to church
for less
than a year. She was talking about how she recently volunteered with our
local Special Olympics. "It was like the Holy Spirit was all up in my
grill.''
I asked her what her statement meant and she said, "See, the grill is the
front part of your car - the part where all the bugs fly in. If someone is
'all
up in your grill' it means that they are 'all in your business.' When I was
working with those special needs kids, I felt the Holy Spirit inside of
me.''
So, of course I had to ask, "What does the Holy Spirit feel like?''
She replied, "It's when you are doing what you're supposed to do, what God
wants you to do, and you can't do anything else.''
I immediately loved her idea that the Holy Spirit grabs us so tightly that
we can't do anything else. When the Holy Spirit is tangible in our lives,
our
response is delight in God's will. When the Holy Spirit wanted the church
formed on Pentecost, it undeniably blew through a gathering of believers who
responded with joy. When the Holy Spirit grabs youth, enthusiasm and
holiness burst out in an uncontrollable spill of divine inspiration.
- The Rev. Doodle Harris, associate pastor for youth and their families,
Highland Presbyterian Church, Louisville, Kentucky
Prayer
Holy Spirit, burst into our lives. Get all up in our grills so that we
cannot stop praising you. Be in the lives of our young people. Shape our
ministries
so that all of God's children feel your compassion and love. Amen.
