We recently asked you, the readers of Clarion Project if you felt human-rights legislation should be dropped to fight terrorism. The leader of the UK Conservative Party, Theresa May, proposed restricting the human rights of terror suspects in the lead up to the British general election, which took place on June 8.
The Conservatives lost their overall majority but remained the largest party in the tense vote.
You responded to the question “should human rights laws be set aside to fight terrorism?”
Of those who responded, 87.79% said yes, with 9.63% voting no and 2.58% responding they were unsure.
We received a lot of comments to our Facebook page where we shared the poll. A selection of responses is reprinted below.
“Yes for criminals and terrorist. They shouldn’t have any human rights. Did they consider the human rights of their victims??? I think not!!!”
‘Theresa May would love to get rid of human rights and workers rights, very dodgy ground bringing new law’s and legislation like that in you’re country starts looking more like a policed state.”
“If you have an opponent who does not recognize human rights or any rules of engagement then they should not have any of those rules or rights extended to them”
“TM wants to take away human rights to battle terrorism, but she got into bed with a country that is the biggest source for funding of terrorism and her job as home Secretary was to battle terrorism. She failed that job.”
“Well we’ve had our guns taken away, we’ve had our emails read, we’ve had our internet searches logged, we’ve had our phone calls taped our texts archived and our social media activity noted. Remember any removal of rights does not just apply to terrorist suspects, it applies to you.”
“Human rights laws long overdue for review and amendments due to the amount of abuse”
“Time to ban all face covers & hoodies ! If you have nothing to hide, you’ve nothing to worry about. Time for eye & fingerprint recognition, ID cards. This would stop fake passports, driving test fraud and a lot of people slipping in and out our country as they like.”
“All known Terrorists should forfeit any human rights.”
“Human rights cannot be disregarded when we fight terrorism. We cannot allow fear and outrage to change us and our values. There has to be another way.”
