On Sunday, the nation was horrified to hear the news of another mass shooting. Twenty-six people were reported dead after a gunman dressed in black tactical clothing walked into a Texas church and opened fire.

In the wake of the shooting, several foreign leaders have offered their condolences to President Donald Trump, including Japan’s Shinzo Abe and Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz. Reuters reports that Russia’s Vladimir Putin has also sent his condolences to the president.
Horror in a Small Town
The shooter, 26-year-old Devin Patrick Kelly, walked into the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, about 11:30 AM local time on Sunday morning, shortly after the service started. Kelly shot almost all of the congregation – reportedly about 50 people – killing 26 and wounding another 20.

Kelly reportedly took a hostage and tried to leave, but a local plumber, alerted by his daughter about the ongoing carnage, showed up with a rifle, shooting Kelly through a gap in his body armor. The local man, along with another man who was driving by, gave chase as a wounded Kelly tried to escape by speeding off in his vehicle.

The two armed Texans, after a high-speed chase reaching 95 mph, finally pulled up behind Kelly’s vehicle after he crashed. The shooter was found dead in the car after what police now call a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Sunderland Springs is a tiny town with less than 500 residents; every victim was known and loved by the community.
The pastor’s 14-year-old daughter Annabelle Pomeroy was one of the victims. Pastor Frank Pomeroy and his wife were out of town at the time.

Why?
Authorities were still searching for a motive as of Monday morning. Kelly’s social media accounts were removed fairly quickly after the shooting, as police investigators and federal agents tried to piece together the mind of a killer.

Kelly, who previously served in the Air Force, reportedly served time while in the military for a domestic assault conviction against his wife and daughter. He was dishonorably discharged in 2014.

Texas governor Greg Abbott said that Kelly applied for a license to carry a gun, but the state refused him. Abbott told CNN, “By all the facts that we seem to know, he was not supposed to have access to a gun. So how did this happen?”
