No, Right-Wing Terrorism is NOT More Common Than Islamic Extremism

What’s more common, right-wing terrorism, or Islamic terrorism? Given the recent pipe bomb scares, you’re bound to run into some liberal twisting the statistics to (mis)inform you that ” well actually, right-wing extremism is a greater problem than Islamic extremism in America.”
Oh really now?

Back in January, Cory Booker told CNN that “In American history since 9/11, we’ve had 85 major attacks in our country, 73 percent of them have been by white nationalist hate groups.” Convenient of him to begin his timeline after the worst Islamic terrorist attack in U.S. history, ain’t it? Unsurprisingly, the factless fact-checkers over at Politifact rated the claim “half-true.” Their “half-true” rating was based on Booker claiming 73 “white nationalist” attacks, while the study Booker was relying on was documenting “far right wing violent extremist groups.” So Politifact’s problem with Booker’s statement was largely semantics – but the real problems with his statement deserve a “pants on fire” rating.

The source in question is a 2017 Government Accountability Office (GAO) study titled “Countering Violent Extremism.” While Booker’s assessment is technically correct that 73 percent of terrorist attacks are from far-right groups (which I assume is what he meant to say regardless), the GAO study is extremely flimsy on what constitutes a right-wing terrorist attack. For example, turn to page 29 of the study, and one of the right-wing terrorist attacks is described as “White Supremacist member of Aryan Brotherhood killed a man.” That’s it. No detail as to the motive, the race of the victim, or anything else. Since when does a murder become a terrorist incident just because the murderer also happens to be a bigot? A hate crime perhaps, but not a terror attack. That same white supremacist killed someone else in later weeks, and is counted as a separate “terrorist attack” in the study.

On page 31, “Far rightist murdered a homeless man” is counted as a right-wing terror attack, and if these examples thus far weren’t crazy enough, page 32 describes a “White supremacist [who] shot and killed 9 at his community college.” That shooting was the 2015 Umpqua Community College shooting, carried out by a self-described “mixed race” individual who singled out Christians for his attack. Does that sound like a right-wing terrorist attack to you? How about on page 30, when the study documents the “right-wing terrorist attack” involving “Six white supremacist inmates beat[ing] another prisoner to death.”? Do you walk the streets in fear that prison inmates will somehow assault you?
Clearly, the GAO is grasping at straws when it comes to defining terrorism or “major attacks.” Indeed, nearly every single right-wing terrorist attack on the list are individual murders that at best would accurately be described as hate crimes. Those murders should not be counted as instances of “terrorism,” but suppose for a second that we’re to grant the GAO’s methodology. Even so, this highlights another problem in the study: that they’re counting attacks based on their frequency, not death toll.

While there were 62 instances of right-wing terror int he GAO study, they resulted in “only” 106 deaths. That’s a death toll racked up in mere seconds on September 11th. When one Islamic terror attack can result in over 30x the deaths of an inflated estimate of right-wing terror deaths, who in their right mind would think the right-wing is more dangerous?
Meanwhile, the GAO’s documented cases of Islamic extremism has only 23 incidents, but a comparably higher 119 deaths. As already mentioned, they’re conveniently beginning their timeline post-9/11. So I suppose by their logic Islamic terrorism isn’t such a threat if you just happen to ignore the worst Islamic terrorist attack on U.S. soil.

In total, I could only find seven incidents (carried out by five perpetrators) that could accurately be described as right-wing terror incidents, resulting in 22 victims dead (excluding perpetrators). They are:

Anti-government violent extremist flew a small plane into an Austin, TX office building with an IRS office in it to protest the IRS and the government. One dead – only the perpetrator.
Neo-Nazi killed six at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, 8/5/2012, Oak Creek, Wisconsin. Six dead.
Anti-government extremist kills Transportation Security Administration officer at Los Angeles International Airport, 11/1/2013, Los Angeles, California. One dead.
White supremacist shot and killed 2 at a Jewish Community Center, 4/13/2014, Overland Park, Kansas. Two dead.
Same perpetrator as the previous attack in Overland Park; perpetrator murdered another person at a Jewish retirement center later the same day, 4/13/2014, Leawood, Kansas. One dead.
White supremacist Dylann Roof shot and killed 9 African Americans in a shooting at an African American church, 6/17/2015, Charleston, South Carolina. Nine dead.
Anti-government survivalist extremist killed 3 at Planned Parenthood clinic including a responding police officer, 11/27/2015, Colorado Springs, Colorado. Three dead.
If we’re to apply these revised figures, that would mean seven right-ring terror incidents compared to 23 Islamic terror incidents. Not only is the former much rarer, when such terror attacks do occur, the death toll is far less. Even a single Islamic terror incident such as the 2009 Fort Hoot shooting or 2015 San Bernardino massacre racked up death tolls of more than half of all right-wing terror incidents combined. Most importantly, however, it proves that 3/4th of terror attacks are Islamic, not the reverse, as Booker claimed.
And don’t forget, this is just domestic terrorism. Even as they were seeing massive territorial losses last year, ISIS still carried out attacks killing at least 6,500 innocent people, and their African affiliate Boko Haram killed an additional 900. It goes without saying that there are no equivalent “right-wing” terrorist outlets.

Fox News host Sean Hannity has heard just about enough of the rhetoric addressed to Trump over the recent bomb threats.

While the media, liberals, and Democrats are putting the blame on Trump, Hannity says free speech and opinions are not the same as advocating violence.

Hannity stated, “You know, if you say ‘CNN sucks’ or ‘CNN is fake news,’ that is not a cry or an advocation of violence in any way, shape, matter, or form.”

“It’s a feeling people have when they see abusively biased news coverage,” he added.

The Rhetoric
For more than two years, the media has been twisting virtually every word that has come out of the mouth of President Trump.

Trump likes to get people riled up at his rallies based on current headlines.

He has been touting CNN as fake news during the entire election period, something that is not exactly news.

Based on the fact the network has been caught with their hand in the cookie jar on several occasions, Trump’s opinion of CNN is more fact than fiction.

The ‘Victims’
One of the targets of the bomber was actor Robert DeNiro.

While the media has blamed Trump for the actor being targeted, they seem to have forgotten the fact it was actually DeNiro that uttered the inflammatory language.

During a Tony Awards presentation, DeNiro stated, “I’m gonna say one thing: F&*% Trump! It’s no longer ‘down with Trump,’ it’s F$%! Trump!”

DeNiro has also, and more than once, stated that he would like to punch Trump in the face and likely would if he ever ran into him in person.

Now, imagine a deranged supporter hearing those words…

Absolutely not justifying the actions of the bomber, but one can understand how a mentally deranged person would interpret comments like that.

The media cannot continue to call out Trump and conservatives while letting inflammatory language from liberals continuously get a pass.

Rush Limbaugh: CNN is more focused on linking bomb attacks to Trump than on public safety

After all the blind speculation and feigned melodramatics surrounding the nationwide manhunt for whoever was targeting prominent Democrats with improvised mail bombs, CNN producers are breathing a collective sigh of relief. But not because the culprit, 56-year-old Cesar Sayoc, Jr., was arrested Friday and will no longer be in a position to hurt anyone.

Rather, reporters for the cable news giant are clearly relieved to hear that the suspect is a card-carrying, pro-Trump Republican. Commenting on this one-sided reporting, conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh argued that CNN is more concerned with tying the attacks to President Donald Trump than with public safety and bringing the perpetrator to justice.

“They are trying to pass responsibility of this off to Donald Trump and then trying to get us to shut up in response and in opposition to it,” Limbaugh said. “We’re supposed to have sit here and say, ‘Oh, no, no, no, no, had no.’ Until we know the facts…we can’t comment while they comment left and right and start ragging on Trump or his supporters or what have you, while we’re supposed to shirt and be polite and have good manners and not say anything about it.”

It’s no secret that the so-called “journalists” reporting for the cable news giant CNN have been crossing their fingers and hoping that mail bomber turns out to be a pro-Trump Republican. After Democrat politicians like former President Barack Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were targeted, CNN headlines referred to the victims as “Trump critics” or “Trump targets,” insinuating a direct connection between the president and the attacks.

Job number one
The Democratic strategy is clear: make it appear that Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric and combative nature drove Sayoc to commit these heinous acts.

“They’ve been running this all morning, the chyron graphic at the bottom, whatever else is on the screen, ‘Ten Packages Sent to Trump Targets,’ and then it lists the names,” Limbaugh said. “Trump targets! CNN’s preaching [that] we’re not to be talking about who did this because we don’t have the facts, and yet you think this is not telling us who they think did it?”

He continued: “Have you ever seen the media less interested in finding out who the perp is? … If you watch this carefully, you don’t see a lot of curiosity about that, just the fact that they can do banner headlines. ‘Trump Targets Receive Bombs,’ or whatever it is, is plenty enough for them…They’re dumbing everything down that they cover.”

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), the same liberal politician who once directed her supporters to confront members of the Trump administration when they see them “in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station” is now saying that Trump is to blame for the packages sent to her office. She said that “in his own way,” the president “really does do a lot to promote violence.”

“I think the president of United States should take responsibility for the kind of violence that we are seeing for the first time in different ways,” Rep. Waters said. “I think the president of the United States has been dog-whistling to his constituency, making them believe that their problems are caused by those people over there. And I think they are acting in a way that they think the president wants them to do and the way he wants them to act.”

Of course, when Republican Rep. Steve Scalise (LA) and other conservatives were shot by a crazed anti-Trump gunman who also happened to volunteer for one-time Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, comments were limited to prayers for the wounded and respect and admiration for Capitol Police who responded so quickly to the tragedy.

Responding to politically-motivated violence from a Democrat, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said in a statement that “on days like today, there are no Democrats or Republicans, only Americans united in our hopes and prayers for the wounded.”

Apparently, this is not a universal sentiment.

2 suspicious packages found – addressed to Joe Biden

On Thursday, two more suspicious packages were discovered, similar to the pipe bombs mailed to George Soros, Hillary Clinton, and other prominent Democrats earlier this week.

Both packages were found in Delaware postal facilities and both were addressed to former Vice President Joe Biden.

The Discovery
The packages were very cleverly sent through two different postal facilities.

Luckily, workers at both facilities were aware of the threat and immediately spotted the suspicious packages.

One was found in New Castle and the second was found in Wilmington.

During the early morning hours in New Castle, as packages were being sorted, someone spotted the suspicious package.

A supervisor ordered the building evacuated and all vehicles moved away from the facility.

Roughly two hours later, a similar scene played out in Wilmington.

A supervisor spotted a package with something inside “shaped like a flashlight.”

Again, employees were ordered to leave the building and authorities were called.

Both packages were very similar in nature and representative of the other bomb packages that had been sent during the week.

They were both manila envelopes with the bombs wrapped in bubble wrap.

On the outside of the envelope, there were six stamps and a return addressee of Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Schultz is the former DNC chair, but is not believed to be involved in this plot in any way.

56-year-old Cesar Sayoc was arrested in connection with the mail bombs on Friday morning in Plantation, Florida.

The media has speculated the bomber is targeting Trump’s so-called enemies.

Authorities say some of the mailed bombs were incapable of exploding due to flaws. Whether those flaws were intentional or not is unclear.

In all, just over a dozen packages were sent out to high-profile Democrats.

So this isn’t ISIS. Who it is, however, remains a mystery.
No one seems to have noticed at CNN, which is running strongly with the idea that some “right-wing extremist” sent these. However, the Islamic State flag is unmistakable in the CNN photo:

No hint of it in the coverage, however. It wouldn’t fit the narrative.

All this doesn’t mean that the Islamic State sent the packages. They could have been sent by a “right-wing extremist” who wanted to make it seem as if the perpetrator was ISIS. However, the Islamic State would certainly benefit from giving the appearance that Democrats were being attacked, leading to a sympathy vote for those who would make things easy for them. It is something that shouldn’t simply be ignored, however.

Federal authorities arrested a suspect in south Florida in connection with a series of “suspicious packages” sent to prominent Democrats Friday morning, with multiple media outlets identifying the man as 56-year old Cesar Sayoc, Jr.

“A law enforcement source told Fox News that the suspect is a white male in his 50s, a former New Yorker, who lives in Aventura, Florida, who had prior arrests for terroristic threats. Several of the packages went through a U.S. postal facility in Opa-locka, which is less than 10 miles from Aventura,” writes Fox News.

“DNA evidence played a role in the arrest of Cesar Sayoc, Jr., 56,” confirmed NBC News.

(NBC New York) Investigators seized two more suspected package explosives — one addressed to former Vice President Joe Biden in Delaware and one addressed to Robert De Niro in New York — early Thursday, bringing the total number of confiscated devices sent to high-profile Democrats and others to nine in 72 hours. News of the De Niro device broke first. That one was addressed to him and had been sent to a Greenwich Street

building he owns that houses offices for Tribeca Films and Tribeca Grill, law enforcement officials tell News 4. A building worker called police early Thursday because, after seeing Wednesday’s news, he remembered seeing a similar package a day or so ago. The device was removed from the property and no evacuation was ordered; the building was unoccupied.

A similar package addressed to De Niro was found Thursday in the offices of his New York City production company.
“A suspicious package was received. We called the police. They took it out and went through all safety procedures,” the Tribeca Film Center said in a statement. “It was addressed to Robert De Niro and is similar packaging to the others. It is an open investigation. Everyone is safe and the building is open.”

A suspicious package has triggered the evacuation of a mail facility in south Los Angeles, according to media citing local police. The package was reportedly addressed to Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters.
A bomb squad, as well as the Los Angeles Police Department and agents from the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were dispatched to the scene to investigate the package.
The FBI has confirmed that there were two suspicious packages, both addressed to Rep. Maxine Waters. Earlier, one had been intercepted in Maryland on its way to Waters' office. That one was not mentioned in the FBI's press release.

Waters blamed Trump for the threats in a statement to Blavity, accusing him of "dog-whistling to his constituency, making them believe that their problems are caused by 'those people over there.'" She insisted that the president should take responsibility for the violence.

"I don't know whether the bombs are real or not, but we should not crawl under bed, close the doors, not go out, be afraid to go to rallies. We have to keep doing what we're doing in order to make this country right," she advised. "I ain't scared."

The bomb was discovered as Trump has been calling for the bomber to be brought to justice, assuring “the full weight of our government” is behind the investigation. “Acts or threats of political violence have no place of any kind in the United States of America,” he announced after meeting with the FBI, Justice Department, and DHS.

The earlier confirmed bombs, including one sent to George Soros on Monday night, were constructed with PVC pipe, which x-rays showed contained shrapnel, an explosive, and timers. Senior bomb technicians confirmed all the components required to detonate the devices were present. However, none of the bombs actually exploded.

Democrats blamed Trump, pointing out that every package recipient – Waters, Soros, Clinton, Obama, Holder, Wasserman-Schultz, and Brennan – was on the president’s unofficial “enemies list,” regularly coming in for criticism at rallies and on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Republicans brought up the fact that the bombs had all been safely discovered before doing any damage, suggesting the “attacks” might have been a ploy to garner sympathy (and votes) for the Democrats ahead of the election.

The Secret Service “intercepted” two “potential explosive devices” sent to former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Wednesday, as another “suspicious package” prompted the evacuation of CNN’s New York offices.

The flurry of dangerous devices comes as local police report an additional package was sent to Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

“ALERT!!! We are working an investigation of a suspicious package near Sawgrass Corporate Parkway. Please stay out of the area of NW 8th St and NW 136th Ave. We will provide further updates when available,” tweeted the Sunrise Police Department.
