Muslim British MP pelted with eggs
LUTON, England (UPI) -- Conservative Party member of Parliament Sayeeda Warsi, Britain's most senior Muslim politician, was pelted with eggs in Luton, a spokesman says.

A spokesman for Warsi, the Tories' shadow minister for community cohesion and social action, was attacked Monday by a group of Muslim men as she walked down a Luton street where race riots raged this year, The Times of London reported.

"They were saying something about her not being a proper Muslim," Warsi's spokesman told the newspaper. "But rather than run off, she stood her ground and said 'Let's have a proper debate, let's have an argument.' They just carried on screaming and shouting."

"These men are a bunch of idiots who do not represent the wider Muslim community," Warsi said later in an issued statement. "I stood up to them and challenged them to a proper debate, but they weren't prepared to listen."

The Times said one egg hit her jacket, but her spokesman said that did not deter her. Warsi was reportedly taken to a nearby shop and later continued the Luton visit with police protection.
