Gleaning From The Word ~ A New Name

Issue #3458 - A New Name
I've often spoken of reading through the Scriptures and having Holy
Spirit shed fresh illumination on a familiar passage. It happened the on
Thursday evening as I was reading to Kathy before bed time. We were reading
in 2 Samuel about the birth of Solomon.
David has slept with Bathsheba, had her husband murdered and married
her. Their child, conceived in sin has died and that's the point we pick up
the account.
2 Samuel 12:24-25 NIV
Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and he went to her and
lay with her. She gave birth to a son, and they named him Solomon. The LORD
loved him; and because the LORD loved him, he sent word through Nathan the
prophet to name him Jedidiah.
It's that last line I had never paid attention to The LORD loved
him; and because the LORD loved him, he sent word through Nathan the prophet
to name him Jedidiah.
Jedidiah means "Beloved of the Lord". What a beautiful name to be
called by. How many of us would want to be known as beloved of the Lord?
David means beloved and to that is affixed the name of the Lord. It
doesn't translate across well in English, but the name ties together David's
line and the love of the Lord.
Solomon or Jedidiah will be the Lord's chosen successor to David.
All David's other son's will be passed by. It is Solomon who will build the
temple.
As I thought about the new name the Lord gave to Solomon, I was
reminded of a promise he gives to all of us.
Revelation 2:17 NIV
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the
churches. To him who overcomes, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will
also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him
who receives it.
Revelation 3:11-13 NIV
I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will
take your crown. Him who overcomes I will make a pillar in the temple of my
God. Never again will he leave it. I will write on him the name of my God
and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down
out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on him my new name. He who
has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
We will all get a new name from the Lord, a special name just for
us. Names have meaning and the name He has picked for us will be load with
meaning.
I can hardly wait to find out my new name. How about you?
Be blessed
Kevin
