And, as another scripture says, "They will look on the one they have pierced."- John 19:37
This is a quote from Zechariah 12:10. Zechariah 12:10 is in the midst of passages about the cleansing and redemption of Israel. It is about the coming of the Jewish people back to God.
We are also told in Revelation 1:7 that all will look upon Jesus at His Second Coming, even those that pierced Him. We are told in these passages that all must look upon the One Who was pierced and that we will have one of two responses when we do.
We will either tremble in fear and dread or we will look upon Him for redemption and salvation. We will look to Him for our cleansing. It is our choice how we look upon the One Who was pierced, but we all must look upon Him.
God in His divine symmetry had a Gentile pierce Jesus and in so doing fulfilled the Zechariah passage about Israel. It connects Jews and Gentiles in Jesus. Paul talks about the nation of Israel and Gentiles being connected in Romans. He says that because of their rebellion, we have received salvation. He goes on to say that because we have received salvation in Christ, the Jews will receive it as well. The key is that all must go through Christ.
Going back to our key point: all must look upon the one that was pierced. We must deal with Jesus. We can choose to reject Him and His claims and deal with the consequences or we can choose to accept Him and His claims and receive the redemption that cleansing that He offers. The one thing we cannot do is ignore Jesus. We must deal with Him.
Some try to circumvent Jesus with other religions but in the end that will not suffice. Jesus is the One that was pierced and crucified for our sins. Mohammed was not crucified for us. Buddha was not pierced for us. Confucius did not shed his blood on the cross for the sins of all men. Darwin was not God incarnate. Only Jesus did and was all of these things.
This cannot be altered nor can it be changed no matter how much we may not like it. God has come in the person of Jesus and died for all of us. That means He is the only way, truth, and life in the Divine Plan.
The beauty of all of this is that something meant to prove death actually proves life for all. Since Jesus was pierced, we look upon Him and find our salvation in His shed blood. Since Jesus died on the cross, we see the love of God manifested in the greatest way for each and everyone of us. Since Jews and Gentiles alike were involved in the crucifixion, Jews and Gentiles alike find equal salvation and redemption in the person of Jesus.
There are no second class citizens in God's kingdom. We all are sons and daughters of God as we look upon the One Who was pierced for us and accept all that He has done. It is so simple and plain that many will pass it by and ignore it, but remember we cannot ignore Jesus.
To choose to ignore Jesus is to ultimately deny Jesus and our only hope when we come to face eternity. Remember all will look upon the One Who was pierced. The question is will we do it now and bow in humble acceptance of His tremendous gift to each of us or will we be forced to do it when we stand before the throne of God and it is too late? Look upon the One Who was pierced and accept all He has to offer today!
