A new Congress—the 113th—officially began on January 3, 2013. ACT! for America will be watching legislation that is introduced during this Congress (over the next two years) to identify those bills that will strengthen our national security. We will actively support the legislation that makes our High Priority List via my presence on Capitol Hill and through the voice of our 250,000 grassroots activists. You are an integral part of that strategy.

Rep. Duncan is a close ally on Capitol Hill. He has spoken at past ACT! for America National Conference Legislative Briefings and is a recipient of our National Security Patriot Award.
Today, I am announcing the first piece of federal legislation that will be placed on our Legislative High Priority List:

H. Res. 36, introduced by Congressman Frank Wolf (R-VA/10). Congressman Wolf’s legislation creates a short term special committee to investigate the Benghazi attack on our consulate, killing Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans. We are pleased to report that this important and timely bill already has the support of 26 cosponsors, but we need many more if this special committee is ever to see the light of day.

If any of you watched the hearings on the Benghazi incident that took place recently in both the House and Senate, I think you’ll agree that the statements by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey, were sorely lacking, if not downright insulting to Members of Congress, the families of the victims, and the American people. As Representative Jeff Duncan (R-SC/3) told Secretary Clinton, “Madame Secretary, you let the consulate become a death trap.” (See box.)

This stonewalling is unacceptable. But it won’t stop until the American people say NO MORE.

The U.S. Congress needs to hear from their constituents that creating this special committee is something that they want to see done—and soon. Will you let them hear from you?

Over the coming months, please continue to check our federal High Priority Legislation list (it will reside on our website) so you can learn what pieces of legislation we feel are critical to national security policy. In addition, I will continue to send out special Action Alerts when important and timely action is needed on Capitol Hill so you know when we require your help. Please keep your eye out for those!

2. Also, please sign our
demanding the creation of a special short-term congressional committee to thoroughly investigate what happened in Benghazi and why. It is important to our nation and to the world that the U.S. Congress places the Benghazi attack at a level of high priority. This special committee would do just that.

Make no mistake about it: Each of you plays a critically important role in seeing productive national security bills move through the legislative process. The proposals that ultimately land on our High Priority List will move further through the legislative process only if your federal legislators hear from you—their constituent.

Dear Elaine,

It has come to our attention that earlier this week Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA), Chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, released a GAO report identifying federal prisons in the U.S. that the Obama Administration could use to house Guantanamo detainees.

Although the report notes the Defense Department’s serious security concerns about housing Guantanamo detainees in the U.S., the report provides a roadmap for the President to fulfill his January 20, 2009, executive order to bring detainees to the U.S.

This would extend to these terrorists the same rights and privileges as American citizens.

We cannot allow this to happen and we need your help NOW. The U.S. Congress must hear a loud “NO GUANTANAMO DETAINEES ON U.S. SOIL” from the American public.

Not now. Not ever.

We need your help, immediately!

Please take a moment to call your Members of Congress (House and Senate) TODAY. Politely, but firmly, let them know that you are VERY MUCH opposed to the transfer of Guantanamo Bay detainees to any facilities on U.S. soil!

Further, please pass this request on to every person you know.
