This is as good a topic as any to introduce myself on, especially one that is close my heart.
We as a nation are trying to make moves to cut down on our energy usage and to recycle more.
I work for a company that promotes the recycling policy to all it's employees and clients.
I have a lot of friends who spend a lot of time sorting through there rubbish making sure the correct stuff goes in the right box for disposal.
But then if you walk through there houses you will find so much energy being wasted, computers not being used but left in the standby mode for hours, televisions in standby mode, Sky or Ntl box's left on when not in use,Broadband permantley switched on.
I wonder if all homes and office's switched off anything that was not vital or in use how much energy me as a nation could save,i try to do this when i leave my home the only things that are on are my fridge and freezer, everything else is switched off a the socket.
Plastic bags are another thorn in my side, every shop you go in today wants you to walk around with it's bag, i have got into the habit now of accepting the first bag but if i have more shop to do then i will fill the bag i already have, every bag i refuse leaves one more in the shop, this means there is one less to order from the wholesaler, which in turn means one less to make, which in turn means less energy used less greenhouse gases and resources left in the earth, not a bad picture imagine if we all did that.
I agree with Dunggate we should be putting more pressure onour goverments to do more, but what about the people who refuse to do anything, maybe we should also be setting up a system to put pressure on them.

I recycle. I am often criticized for it but I don't let those ppl get to me. I have been to the "dump" before and have seen what ppl throw away. A dump or landfill is a testimony to our stewardship. Before I throw anything away I always ask myself if this can be reused in any way.

Hi Mimi,
Welcome to WWC....I see you live in the States. Do they promote recycling over there?.....and good for you for doing it anyway.
Over here we have massive landfill problems and are desperartely promoting the recycling charities...but we are very much still in the infancy of this process in some towns and cities here in UK...mistakes are being made and local authorities are clamping down hard on those who are not using the recycling facilities properly. We are penalised here if we don't recycle correctly, so many teething problems which will hopefully sort itself with more education and less hard hand tactics.
When I was living in Holland back in the early 80's recycling schemes were well established with bottle banks and various recycling bins and I have to say it is one of the cleanest and most efficient energy saving countries that was way out in front on protecting our planet. With so many cyclists and cycleways traffic polution was minimal and their nation was fitter and healthier.
They reclaimed whole towns and communities from the sea and introduced so much vegetation and introduced wildlife into the newly created dykes and lakes. A fabulously healthy and green country that was years ahead of us in conservation. We have much to learn from our Northern European neighbours in this respect.

Hey Gillie! Yes, I live in the states, in the midwest. Here, we have ample space for landfills but such is not the case back east, like in New York. The areas that are pinched for space have tighter recycling laws than we do here, for example. In my state, we pay 5c per bottle or can of carbonated beverage. The containers can then be redeemed at redemption centers. Not all states do this and those that do have discussed doing away with it from time to time. It doesn't stop people from throwing the containers out of their vehicles. Americans can be so trashy. Many are not raised in the biblical stewardship tradition. I have been called a packrat but so what?

Yes I agree, and as far as the recycling is concerned it is still a learning curve for us and the recyclers. I'm sure with reinforced education and fewer harmful and more biodegragable packaging now being introduced it will all get easier.
But to save our planet there are many many more things we should be doing other than just recycling.
Energy conservation, and not just in industry. We need to be much more aware of how much energy we are wasting and look towards greener energy resources.
Look at the biggest damage that is occuring to our planet from the ever increasing carbon emmissions and polutants that are released into our atmosphere by our selfish demand for air travel and 3 car famillies. Cutbacks need to be made.....in fact we need to completely rethink the way we live in this 'ever-disposable' and self gratification society we live in, and change our values and our ways.
God has made us the caretakers of this planet and we are totally annihilating it by our own selfish need and greed with little regard to the consequences of a world that is slowly dying.

Yes I try to recycle as much stuff as possible but I agree it can get confusing at times.
But I still think it's worth each one of us making an effort to do our part.

I agree it is important, but I do think that the way the system works doesnt help or encourage people to do it. Which is a shame. I have no transport and it is a half mile up a steep hill to our nearest recycling depot.
Now while this sounds reasonable and why dont i recycle so often??? add a busy three year old to carry, along with the weight of the bags being carried and the time taken to climb up that hill and it makes more sense for them to put some more bins around the place.
Too many people i know find the variety of bins to seperate things into is too complicated - if only i was able to have that same excuse.....lol....I do what I can and i do my best at that. I can do no more.
Peace

Recycling is very important we should all make it our duty to recycle as much as possable, if not for us but for God who's house we are living in for our children and there children.
Would any decent person go into anothers house and totaly destroy it, just look around your gardens there are some i have seen lately roses are still in bloom birds are singing as they they do in spring.
I believe this is God hitting us over the head with a hammer trying to show us what we are doing, and wanting us to alter our way's.

Yes definately I think everybody should be doing as much as they possibly can, I always try and recycle what i can although since I moved its kinda confusing and very annoying because they refused to take my recycables one day because I had plastics in it even though they were recycable so i had to take them all in again and put them in the rubbish bin. Grrrrrr.............
Anyway, we can all recycle and encourage others to, teach our children to.
We know who created this world and should be respecting it more than others who don't believe God created it. We can't do a big pile other than recycle and encourage others, you can't make people do anything.
Thats all Ive to add for first thing Monday morning.LOL

SAVING OUR PLANET
Do we take it seriously enough about recycling, carbon emissions etc.,
Should we be bothered? and Why?
If so what can we do?
