This afternoon the stars aligned on the floor of the senate for Marco Rubio. He gave possibly his best speech yet on a timely issue in the forefront of the news. Three things combined to make this a perfect opportunity for Rubio to make a huge impact:
1) This issue is in the public consciousness. With Obama pursuing a nuclear deal with Iran without congressional input, and relations with ally Israel becoming more strained by the day, the salience of this issue hasn’t been greater in years. To illustrate, Prime Minister Netanyahu felt it necessary to speak to Congress a few weeks ago, and after having won re-election last night, had still not received a congratulatory phone call from President Obama. Rubio compares this slight to the fact that Obama is quick to phone call Putin of Russia, and the Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt.
2) Rubio is an expert on and seems most passionate about foreign affairs. Having parents from Cuba, Rubio has developed a foreign affairs ideology that is fiercely opposed to treading lightly on communism or tyrants in general. As a senator since 2011, he’s also been able to further refine his thinking and positions on how America should conduct itself in the world.
3) Rubio needs a moment to use as a springboard for announcing his run for president. While the first two factors are important, it’d be naive to think that there wasn’t a political calculation to this speech. Republicans, and Americans in general are supporters of Israel. Seeing a young, fresh face make such an impressive defense of the small nation, is sure to gain Rubio some attention and support.
With these three things in mind, it was a no-brainer that Rubio would take the opportunity to speak about Israel and the president’s policies toward it.
