Americans have been treated to a lesson in civics from Russian strong-arm president Vladimir Putin.
Russia’s longtime chief executive said that criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump by Americans has escalated into blatant “disrespect” for the office of the presidency. He also argued that Trump’s obstructionist political adversaries “haven’t allowed him to fulfill any of his election plans.”
Honoring the presidency
Putin’s comments about American politics came in response to questions posed to him on Thursday at the Valdai International Discussion Club in Sochi, Russia. He told the foreign policy forum that abusive, disparaging judgments aimed at political figures are a “negative” aspect of American democracy.
“Inside the country, disrespect is shown for him. This is a regrettable negative component of the U.S. political system,” Putin said. He went on to claim that “one can argue but one can’t show disrespect, even not for him personally but for those people who voted for him.”
Honoring the man
Putin believes that his American counterpart possesses certain strengths that allowed him to endure America’s election process.
The Russian leader believes that Trump is up to the task of successfully administering a world superpower.

He told a mostly-Russian audience as much:
I believe that the president of the United States does not need any advice because one has to possess certain talent and go through this trial to be elected, even without having the experience of such big administrative work. He has done this. He won honestly.
According to Putin, Trump’s leadership attributes are deserving of respect, “even if you do not agree with some of his positions.”
However, many Americans do not share Putin’s basic admiration for the office of the presidency. Trump has had to contend with a Hollywood elitist who paraded around a bloody, life-like effigy of his own severed head, while being told by other liberal activists that devastating natural disasters are just “Mother Nature’s rage and wrath” at America for electing Donald Trump.
Condemning “the resistance”
Putin also condemned U.S. lawmakers for standing in the way of Trump’s political agenda and obstructing him at every turn. He believes that Russia-U.S. ties would be improved if not for the “strong resistance inside the country [America].”
While many Russians celebrated the election of Trump, the U.S. president has often been at odds with the Kremlin. Trump was politically compelled to sign a bill codifying sanctions against Russia after confronted a bipartisan Congressional bill, though he verbally condemned the legislation.
Former State Department official Edward Fishman said that the president had little choice in the matter.
“It would have been foolhardy for the Trump administration to veto this bill,” said Fishman. “Congress would have overridden the veto, and all it will do is fuel the fire of the Russia scandal in Washington.”
An experienced lawmaker, Putin recognizes that Trump has his hands tied by the Russian collusion conspiracy that has gripped the U.S. since the 2016 election season. He still holds out hope that relations between the two nuclear-armed states can improve with time, despite the concurrent FBI and Congressional investigations against Trump that are hampering any meaningful, bilateral cooperation.
