The mystery behind the assassination of former President John F. Kennedy (JFK) has captivated Americans for decades. Even more than 50 years later, conspiracy theories still circulate in an entire subculture dedicated to studying the tragedy.

Now, new information has been released that may add fuel to the fire. According to newly released documents, Lee Harvey Oswald’s murderer, mob-related hitman Jack Ruby, may have known the Kennedy assassination was on the horizon before it occurred.

The documents, which were released after a recent declassification ordered by President Donald Trump, reveal that Ruby was in contact with an FBI informant hours before the shooting. The informant, Bob Vanderslice, said that Ruby asked him the morning of the assassination on Nov. 22, 1963 if he wanted to “watch the fireworks” with Ruby later that day.

A Tangled Web
According to the document, Ruby was standing next to Vanderslice at the corner of the Postal Annex Building in Dallas at the time of the assassination, directly opposite the site from which Oswald took his fatal shots at the former president. The document reports:

The informant stated that on the morning of the assassination, Ruby contacted him and asked if he ‘would like to watch the fireworks.’ He was with Jack Ruby and standing at the corner of the Postal Annex Building facing the Texas School Book Depository Building at the time of the shooting. Immediately after the shooting, Ruby left and headed toward the area of the Dallas Morning News Building.
Their conversation was not reported to the FBI until more than a decade later, in 1977.

News of this interaction fuels speculation that Ruby was aware of the impending shooting, leading to new questions about his involvement in the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald.

Records of this conversation only became public knowledge earlier this week after University of Virginia political analyst Larry Sabato noticed it in a trove of documents recently released regarding the JFK assassination.

The JFK Files, as the entire package is known, has been sealed for decades, prompting numerous conspiracy theories over the years. And while intelligence agencies attempted to fight the release of the documents after the 25-year review period, President Trump gave them a timeline of just six months — from October to April — to release all of the documents.

Ruby’s Fatal Shot
Just two days after the JFK assassination, Ruby shot and killed Oswald as he was being transferred from city to county jail.

Ruby, a nightclub owner with ties to the mob, eventually died in prison after his conviction for Oswald’s murder, among other charges. He has long been considered a possible part of a widespread mob-run or even CIA-sanctioned conspiracy to kill the president, and the release of these files isn’t suppressing any of the rumors.

The idea that the Kennedy assassination was an orchestrated plot is one that many considered a conspiracy theory. However, it appears there might be some truth to it after all.

Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby, who shot and killed assassin Lee Harvey Oswald, told an FBI informant to “watch the fireworks” just hours prior to President Kennedy’s assassination, according to The Daily Mail.

The nightclub owner commented on the morning of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination to an FBI informant that implied he knew well in advance what was about to take place, according to the newest batch of declassified JFK documents from the Trump administration.

Mr. Ruby, who was eventually charged with killing Lee Harvey Oswald before the FBI managed to interrogate him, asked an FBI informant if he would like to “watch the fireworks” with him as Kennedy’s motorcade drove through downtown Dallas just a few hours before the killing took place.

Two days later, Jack Ruby shot and killed Oswald while he was transferred from the city to county jail. This interaction between Mr. Ruby and the FBI informant was not relayed to the Bureau until March 1977, 14 years after the event occurred.

“The informant stated that on the morning of the assassination, Ruby contacted him and asked if he would ‘like to watch the fireworks,'” an FBI record dated April 6, 1977, said. “He was with Jack Ruby and standing at the corner of the Postal Annex Building facing the Texas School Book Depository Building at the time of the shooting. Immediately after the shooting, Ruby left and headed toward the area of the Dallas Morning News Building.”

CBS News reports that the informant, who was revealed to be Bob Vanderslice, told the FBI in 1977 that Jack Ruby said nothing to him after the assassination took place, but that Mr. Vanderslice did get to know the nightclub owner better while he was in the Dallas County Jail.

Jack Ruby died in prison, and when coupled with the fact that he was known to have connections to the mafia, theories have arisen that the nightclub owner might have been part of a larger plot to kill President Kennedy.

These findings come in light of the Trump administration’s release of the JFK assassination files. Personally ordered by President Trump, over 10,744 records were released online in the fifth mass release this year.

Although both the FBI and CIA have objected to releasing some of these files on the basis of national security, the President said that once a 180-day review period has expired, all remaining documents will be disclosed to the public with any necessary redactions.

“Subject to the receipt of further information, I will be allowing, as President, the long blocked and classified JFK FILES to be opened,” tweeted the President, adding that “At the end of that period, I will order the public disclosure of any information that the agencies cannot demonstrate meets the statutory standard for continued postponement of disclosure.”

The details of Ruby’s comment is intriguing and lends some substance to the rumors of his potential involvement in the assassination plot. More details are expected in the future as further documents pertaining to JFK’s assassination come to light.

It took 25 years to get our hands on previously-withheld documents related to the 1963 assassination of Former President John F. Kennedy. President Donald Trump released many of these documents to the public, and now, people are digging through the information to see what really happened that fateful day.

According to CBS Local – Miami, during Operation Mongoose in 1960, the CIA planned to stage a “terror attack” and blame it directly on pro-Castro Cubans. “We could foster attempts on lives of Cuban refugees in the United States even to the extent of wounding in instances to be widely publicized. Exploding a few plastic bombs in carefully chosen spots, the arrest of a Cuban agent and the release of prepared documents substantiating Cuban involvement also would be helpful in projecting the idea of an irresponsible government,” the document states.

This is certainly an interesting piece of information that will undoubtedly spur questions. This will become one of the most widely-discussed documents of all the newly released files.

Interestingly, President Trump did withhold some of the documents, citing national security concerns.

The big question many are asking is this: if President Trump was willing to release documents saying that the CIA planned on attacking our own country for political gain, what kind of information is contained in the documents witheld for national security?

There will be conspiracy theories coming after these documents, and President Trump’s unwillingness to release all of the documents is fuelling that fire. In time, more documents will likely be released into the public domain, though for now, several documents (about 15% of the documents slated for release this year) were redacted and sealed for another indeterminate period of time.

The FBI received a death threat on Lee Harvey Oswald one day before his murder. FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover stated that a man called “talking in a calm voice” who said he was going to kill Oswald.

The man said that he was part of a committee with the goal of killing Oswald. From the looks of it, they went on to try and protect Oswald so that he could pay for his crime of assassinating the president — instead, Oswald was shot dead by Jack Ruby.

There is no doubt that the countless mysteries surrounding JFK’s assassination, Oswald, and the government agencies in power during the time of his assassination will only deepen with the release of these documents.

The newly-released documents may not be enough to solve some of the real mysteries, but there is enough information there to spark interest.

It is going to be interesting to see, moving forward, if people begin to question some of the attacks that take place on our soil due to the CIA openly discussing terror plots on Americans that they intended to carry out.

This information could change the way we operate as a country. If enough people see the information and demand more transparency from the government, we could end up seeing a much more “open” government which would eventually shrink, which is a win for every US Citizen.

LONDON — Twenty-five minutes before John F. Kennedy was assassinated, a British newspaper received an anonymous tip about "some big news" in the United States, according to the trove of more than 2,800 documents released late Thursday by the National Archives.

The mystery call was made to a senior reporter at the Cambridge News, a paper that serves the East Anglia area of eastern England, on Nov. 22, 1963, at 6:05 p.m. local time. Kennedy was shot shortly afterward, as he rode in a presidential motorcade in Dallas, Texas, at 12:30 p.m. CST. Dallas is six hours behind Britain.

"The caller said only that the Cambridge News reporter should call the American Embassy in London for some big news and then hung up," the memo from the CIA's James Angleton to FBI director J. Edgar Hoover said.

The revelation, one of many that emerged from the planned release of the Kennedy assassination documents — so far, there's no smoking guns — adds to the raft of conspiracy theories surrounding his death. In fact, the memo was first released in July, but went unreported until the cache of files was released Thursday.

The memo, dated Nov. 26, 1963, says: "After the word of the President's death was received the reporter informed the Cambridge police of the anonymous call, and the police informed MI5. The important point is that the call was made, according to MI5 calculations, about 25 minutes before the President was shot. The Cambridge reporter had never received a call of this kind before, and MI5 state that he is known to them as a sound and loyal person with no security record."

MI5 is Britain's domestic security agency.
The reporter's name was not mentioned in the memo, which adds that MI5 had received "similar anonymous phone calls of a strangely coincidental nature."

The Cambridge News noted in a story Friday that it too did not know the name of the reporter who took the call, although it said the existence of the memo was first discovered by a lawyer, Michael Eddowes, who devoted much of his life to investigating the mystery surrounding Kennedy's death.

Eddowes, who died in 1992, told the Cambridge News in 1981 that he believed the anonymous caller was a British-born Soviet agent named Albert Osborne.

Two months before Kennedy's assassination, Eddowes believed that Osborne, who also apparently used the alias John Howard Bowen, had befriended Lee Harvey Oswald, the man ultimately charged with murdering Kennedy.

Eddowes' theory was that the call was made "because the Soviet Union was eager that the assassination should be seen as a conspiracy," according to the paper. It was not clear why the Cambridge News was specifically chosen, or why the call was made to a local paper as opposed to national one, which may have led to greater exposure.

Among the information gleaned from the newly-released John F. Kennedy assassination files is confirmation of the CIA’s own assassination efforts.

The almost 3,000 archived records that were released to the public Friday shed little light on the actual JFK assassination. They are, however, a treasure trove of unrelated information — including CIA plans to kill then-Cuban President Fidel Castro.

Bizarre plans
Members of the CIA hatched up “Operation Bounty” to assassinate not only Castro but other high-level Cuban Communist officials. According to a formerly top-secret document, the plan may have had the blessings of top CIA officials. The document states:

As set forth in detail elsewhere, the Central Intelligence Agency was involved in assassination plots against Fidel Castro, as early as late 1959 or 1960. These plans arose at approximately the same time as preparations were underway for the Bay of Pigs (invasion).

These plans involved a number of bizarre schemes and, in at least one instance, involved some contact with organized criminal elements. Among the means considered were poison, botulism pills, and the use of Cuban exile groups.

There is evidence to suggest that (CIA Director) Allen Dulles was aware of these early efforts to develop plans to assassinate Castro and authorized them. It is unclear whether other officials of the Eisenhower or Kennedy Administrations were aware of these early plans.
No blessings from the AG
One method of assassination involved the use of the Mafia by the CIA. According to an additional document released, this plan was met with strong objections from JFK’s brother, then-U.S. Attorney General, Robert F. Kennedy, “because at that time he felt that he was making a very strong drive to try to get after the Mafia.” A CIA official testified:

His comment was to us that if we were going to get involved with the Mafia, in the future at any time, to make sure you see me first.
The attorney general told the FBI he learned the CIA hired an intermediary “to approach Sam Giancana, with a proposition of paying $150,000 to hire some gunman to go into Cuba and kill Castro.” He later indicated that made it difficult to prosecute Sicilian-American mobster Giancana.

In an ironic twist of fate, Robert Kennedy was himself the victim of assassination at the hands of Sirhan Sirhan in 1968 while campaigning in his bid for president.

A sense of humor
The released documents reveal that the CIA operatives who hatched the Castro assassination scheme were not as straight-laced as most might believe.

Their plans called for the payment of bounties on a sliding scale basis. As much as $20,000 would be offered by the agency to dispatch Cuban Communist informants. The assassination of Cuban government officials would fetch as much as $100,000.

But what about the Big Kahuna himself? The disposal of Fidel Castro would net “a morbidly cheeky 2 cents.”

Reconfirmation
The released records confirm previous reports that the CIA repeatedly sought to kill the Cuban dictator. According to a report released last year by the History Channel, the CIA made an estimated 638 attempts on his life.

Castro eventually died in November of last year, according to Cuban state television. The reports did not disclose the cause of his death, however, so perhaps the CIA finally succeeded. More than likely, however, Father Time, with the help of the Cuban medical system, succeeded where the CIA couldn’t.
