If Iran’s chief export is terrorism, then it’s leading terrorism tycoon is Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani. As the Islamic Revolutionary Guards al-Quds Force commander, Soleimani is a facilitator of war crimes throughout the Middle East, and national defense experts warn that, “After Osama bin Laden, he has more American blood on his hand than any terrorist.”

Despite his vile nature and tyrannical track record, Gen. Soleimani is alive and adding to his countless kill streak today because of the actions of one man: former President Barack Obama. According to the Kuwaiti daily Al-Jarida, the Obama administration warned Soleimani of an impending attack from Israeli assassins, prolonging the life of a terrorist mastermind over political differences with Israel and a desire to pass the 2015 nuclear accord with Iran.

The Iranian Quds Force is the expeditionary wing of the elite Republican Guard, providing military support to a compendium of internationally designated terrorist groups, including Hezbollah, Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, and even the Taliban.

Foundation for Democracy in Iran Executive Director Kenneth R. Timmerman described the beneficiary of Obama’s intervention in a scathing profile for The Washington Times.

Regarding Soleimani as a future household name in America, Timmerman wrote:

He is powerful. He is brash. He brazenly shows up on the battlefield to encourage his troops. In Iraq, he has become the maker of prime ministers and governments, and commands a militia of 100,000 men.

To his innocent victims, he is the face of Terror, Inc. As head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps-Quds Force (IRGC-QF), Qassem Suleymani is Iran’s top terrorist.”

Despite this defamatory description, Obama chose to spare Soleimani in 2015 by informing him that Israel was planning to assassinate him near Damascus, Syria.

Questionable motivation
The former president was ostensibly motivated by a desire to salvage the controversial Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a nuclear accord that critics have called “the worst deal ever negotiated” because it includes a sunset clause which legitimizes Iran’s nuclear development and rewards a rogue regime for demonstrating unchecked hostility towards its neighbors.

Perhaps he was desperate for a foreign policy achievement that would shift public attention away from failures in Libya, Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan, or perhaps the president truly despised the Israelis.

In either case, Obama undermined his own administration’s efforts to counter Iran’s regional ambitions, including evidence which shows that he inexplicably shut down a U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency effort to monitor the Iran-backed Hezbollah organization’s sale of cocaine, arms deals, money laundering, and other criminal activities.

Further, Obama’s Justice Department ignored calls to pursue Hezbollah for trafficking drugs into America, and officials obstructed efforts to apprehend top Hezbollah terror suspects, including one of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s preeminent weapons suppliers.

Besides being on friendly terms with a theocratic state that vies for the destruction of Israel, Obama’s decision to spare Soleimani also occurred within the backdrop of a major cooling of relations with Israel.

Obama’s relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could hardly be described as cordial, and Wilson Center president and foreign policy advisor Aaron David Miller has called these differences “clearly the most dysfunctional relationship between an American and Israeli leader.”

Watch your back
Solomeini’s good fortunes were reversed in January 2017 when a pragmatic businessman entered the Oval Office guided by a realpolitik foreign policy. There were no grudges to weigh down President Donald Trump, and he quickly distinguished his friends from his foes and treated them accordingly.

Under a refreshing national security vision that is free from political nuance, the “hit” on Soleimani has undoubtedly been green-lighted by Washington. Al-Jaridi cited confidential sources to claim that U.S. intelligence agencies have approved the assassination of the monster who has been a nightmare to Sunnis, Kurds and anyone who has opposed Iranian hegemony in the past 20 years.

Trump has salvaged Obama’s disastrous relationship with Israel — the only true democracy in the Middle East that is sympathetic to the Western values of liberty and freedom.

Just this week, Netanyahu and Trump co-sponsored a joint resolution which pledges mutual cooperation in the ongoing battle to neutralize a brazen Iranian state that continues to pursue nuclear and conventional arms expansion while inserting itself in nearly every conflict in the Middle East.

Killing Soleimani is a positive and resilient step towards this endeavor — one that, fortunately, the current president is not afraid to pursue.
