BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:15 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched a big assault in the western countryside of Damascus, today, targeting the Beit Jinn pocket that is controlled by Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham.
Led by their elite 42nd Brigade of the 4th Mechanized Division, the Syrian Arab Army stormed the area around the large hilltop of Tal Bardayah in the northern part of the Beit Jinn pocket.
Prior to launching the attack, the Syrian Army was given a major boost from their air force, as they conducted over 15 airstrikes over the jihadist controlled areas in the Golan Heights region of Al-Quneitra.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:55 P.M.) – The last month has seen a record number of strategic air raids being carried out by Russian heavy bombers which, flying in classic 6-ship formations, begin their journey in Russia and transit Iranian and Iraqi airspace – sometimes on a daily basis – to hit targets in Syria.
The commitment of strategic aviation by the Russian Aerospace Forces to the Syrian battle space significantly quieted down following the initial shock-and-awe phase of the Russian intervention, only then being limited to emergency situations such during the August-September 2016 battle in western Aleppo and ISIL’s powerful offensives against the Deir Ezzor bastion in early 2017.
However, the last month has seen a drastic increase in the number of strategic raids being carried out by Russian heavy bombers. These heavy bombardment operations have been conducted during a time when Islamic State forces are all but a shadow of their former might.
Even following the liberation of Abu Kamal – a pro-government victory which has seen ISIL lose its last major urban stronghold inside Syria and fragmented its imperial heartland into a number of small rural pockets within the middle Euphrates valley region – Russian heavy bombers continue to hound retreating Islamic State forces, keeping them disorientated to prevent them from regrouping and foiling their efforts to consolidate new defensive lines.
Initially, Russian heavy bombers were used to strike strategic targets such command-and-control centers, ammo and fuel deports and rear bases. Lately however, the parameters of engagement have expanded to include vehicle columns and belts of tactical positions.

Pentagon to reveal official number of US troops in Syria – report

The US Defense Department (DoD) is now ready to openly discuss the number of US troops in Syria because the coalition has gained ground in its counter-terrorism operations against Daesh in Syria, US media reports said on Friday.

The US Department of Defense has announced that it currently has about 2,000 troops stationed in Syria, after long insisting that only around 500 soldiers were deployed in the country. The personnel belong mainly to special operations forces, CNN has reported, citing Pentagon officials.

When contacted by Sputnik and asked to confirm the report, a Pentagon official said, “We have nothing to add.”

According to reports, US defense officials stuck to the figure of 500 personnel in Syria for so long because showing the more or less real figures had in recent months and years been a highly sensitive issue for the Pentagon due to security reasons.

However, the confusion about the actual US military presence in the country still exists, as even US DoD officials emphasize the incompleteness of the recent report because it does not list soldiers who are on short term missions on the ground or are about to leave the country, US media said.

In addition, the Pentagon is also concerned about unveiling the precise data of its present forces in Iraq, as the US military command believes that the public disclosure will likely put imminent pressure on the country’s government.

The US-led coalition of more than 70 members has been conducting airstrikes, and ground-based and rocket-propelled artillery fire against the Daesh terrorist group in Syria and Iraq since 2014.

Turkish media head arrested over alleged links to Russian Envoy murder – report

The arrest comes nearly a year after the assassination of former Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrei Karlov.
Guru Media Broadcast Group Chairman Hayreddin Aydinbas, who had been detained earlier this week for alleged links to Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen’s movement, referred to as the Fethullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), was remanded into custody on Friday over alleged links to the murder of Russian Ambassador Andrei Karlov in December 2016, the Anadolu news agency reported citing a judicial source.

Following the interrogation by a prosecutor from the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, he had been taken into custody in line with the decision of a criminal court, the agency said.

Aydinbas confessed that he had links to FETO, but claimed that had broken away from the organization back in 2008.

According to Turkish media, Hayreddin Aydinbas also acted as a director general for “Eurasian House” organization that held a conference on Russia-Turkish economic relations in 2016 in Moscow, attended by Turkish Ambassador to Russia Huseyin Dirioz.

Andrei Karlov was shot by an off-duty Turkish police officer named Mevlut Mert Altintas at the opening of an art gallery exhibition in Ankara on December 19, 2016, with three people being injured in the shooting, and the gunman being killed at the scene by law enforcement. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated it considered the attack a terrorist attack.

Following the assassination, a chief advisor to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the crime was affiliated with the Gulen movement.
