Russia’s Embassy in London has sent a list of 14 questions to the UK Foreign Ministry, demanding that it reveals details of the investigation into the nerve-agent poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter.
The questions, provided in full below, include a demand to clarify whether samples of the nerve agent “Novichok” have ever been developed in the UK. The embassy’s statement calls the incident that started the recent diplomatic row a “fabricated case against Russia.”

Police: Russian spy was poisoned by nerve agent
CNN BREAKING NEWS live
Published on 7 Mar 2018
Former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter were deliberately poisoned by a nerve agent in England over the weekend, UK police said.
Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley told reporters that police were treating Sunday's incident as "attempted murder by a nerve agent," though he declined to elaborate on the specific substance that was believed to have been used.
Skripal -- a former Russian military official convicted of spying for the UK -- and his daughter Yulia are critically ill after passing out on a shopping center bench in the southern English town of Salisbury.
A police officer who was one of the first to arrive on the scene also has fallen ill and is in serious condition at a hospital, Rowley said.

Why is the UK accusing Russia of launching a nerve agent attack on Sergei Skripal in Salisbury, and what is the evidence?

“There is no alternative conclusion other than that the Russian state was culpable for the attempted murder of Sergei Skripal and his daughter - and for threatening the lives of other British citizens.”
That was the conclusion Theresa May delivered to MPs over the nerve agent attack in Salisbury, sparking the expulsion of 23 Russian diplomats and a wave of reprisals that have been met with an angry response from the Kremlin.

Russian officials have denied involvement, branded the Prime Minister’s statement a “circus show” and accused the UK of violating a chemical weapons convention by refusing to send it samples of the substance used.

Meanwhile, conspiracy theories are swirling online, with proponents blaming a range of targets including the US, Ukraine, the EU and Britain itself for the attack.

Police have not yet confirmed how Mr Skripal and his daughter Yulia were exposed to the substance, which left them in a critical condition in hospital and affected 36 other people.

What do we know about the attack?
Ms Skripal, 33, was visiting her father and arrived in Heathrow Airport on a flight from Russia at on 3 March.

At approximately 1.40pm the following day, the pair arrived in Sainsbury’s upper level car park in The Maltings shopping precinct in Salisbury.

They went to The Mill pub before going to Zizzi’s Italian restaurant at 2.20pm, where they stayed until around 3.35pm.

Emergency services were called for the first time 40 minutes later and found Mr Skripal and his daughter “extremely ill” on a nearby bench.

Investigations by military experts at the Defence, Science and Technology Laboratory at Porton Down identified the substance used as from a group of nerve agents known as “Novichoks”, roughly translating as “newcomer” in Russian.

What are Novichoks?
The name was given to a group of nerve agents developed by the Soviet Union in a covert programme that was revealed by defectors.

Vil Mirzayanov, a chemical weapons developer who fled to the US, said Novichoks were up to 10 times more deadly than VX.

He told Reuters the programme involved as many as 30,000 or 40,000 people, including around 1,000 who worked on Novichoks specifically, although many were not aware of the initiative’s true nature.

Dr Mirzayanov said they could be synthesised by mixing harmless compounds together, making it made it easier for Russia to produce the necessary materials under the cover of manufacturing agricultural chemicals.

He described the effects of the chemical including extreme pain and suffocation, as it paralyses the respiratory system, after testing its effects on lab animals.

“Novichok was invented and studied and experimented and many tons were produced only in Russia - nobody knew in this world,” Dr Mirzayanov said, arguing that only the Kremlin would have the capability to deploy the agent.

He claimed that Russia maintained tight control over its Novichok stockpiles and that the agent was too complicated for a non-state actor to have weaponised.

“The Kremlin all the time, like all criminals, denying - it doesn’t mean anything.”

How does the Government know Novichok was used in Salisbury?
The Prime Minister said the nerve agent was identified by military scientists at Porton Down, which formerly developed nerve agents including VX itself.

No details of the chemical analysis have been provided publicly but samples are being sent to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for verification.

Dr Patricia Lewis, research director for International Security at Chatham House, said Novichoks could be identified because they have distinct chemical formulae.

“There could be contaminants that would give away where it has come from,” she told The Independent, adding that high-resolution trace analysis could detect pollen and other clues.

There are also different processes for manufacturing the chemical precursors of Novichoks that can be used to establish their origin or glean additional information.

Unlike other most other nerve agents, which are most commonly administered as liquids, the group can also be used in powder form.

Why has the British Government named Russia as the culprit?
Briefing the UN Security Council on Wednesday, British ambassador Jonathan Allen said Novichok was “not a weapon which can be manufactured by non-state actors”.

“It is so dangerous that it requires the highest-grade state laboratories and expertise,” he added.

“Based on the knowledge that Russia has previously produced this agent and combined with Russia’s record of conducting state sponsored assassinations – including against former intelligence officers whom they regard as legitimate targets – the UK Government concluded that it was highly likely that Russia was responsible for this reckless act.”

The Prime Minister gave Russia 24 hours to provide an explanation of how Novichok was used on the streets of Wiltshire, initially raising the possibility that Vladimir Putin’s government might have “lost control of this potentially catastrophically damaging nerve agent and allowed it to get into the hands of others”.

But the Russian government refused the demand, instead calling on Britain to hand over a sample of the nerve agent and accusing it of unacceptable “provocations”.

“They have provided no credible explanation that could suggest they lost control of their nerve agent,” Ms May told MPs on Wednesday.

“No explanation as to how this agent came to be used in the United Kingdom; no explanation as to why Russia has an undeclared chemical weapons programme in contravention of international law.

“Instead they have treated the use of a military grade nerve agent in Europe with sarcasm, contempt and defiance.

“There is no alternative conclusion other than that the Russian state was culpable for the attempted murder of Mr Skripal and his daughter - and for threatening the lives of other British citizens in Salisbury.”

Sceptics have questioned why the Russian government would seek to murder Mr Skripal after previously jailing him for treason and agreeing to hand him over to the West in a major Cold War-style spy swap in 2010.

They claim the Kremlin would not seek to carry out such a brutal and obvious assassination attempt ahead of presidential elections and during tensions over alleged election interference and the wars in Ukraine and Syria, while it would also endanger future spy swaps.

But those supporting the British Government's conclusion say the attack could be a show of power from Mr Putin, a "declaration of indifference to the suspicions of others" that intimidates allies and enemies alike.

Mr Skripal was viewed as a traitor after feeding state secrets to MI6 during his time as a GRU military intelligence officer, and may have been "freelance" spying for private intelligence firms in the UK.

What is Russia saying?
The Kremlin has denied involvement in the attack and accused the UK of violating the Chemical Weapons Convention.

But British authorities insist there are no provisions requiring them to share samples collected in the ongoing criminal investigation.

“It is therefore Russia which is failing to comply with the provisions of the convention and the UN Security Council should not fall for their attempts to muddy the waters,” Mr Allen said.

Russian politicians have contradicted each other, with some claiming that Novichok stockpiles were destroyed and others claiming that it was never developed in the first place.

The state-owned English language Sputnik website quoted Igor Morozov as saying: “Russia has not only stopped the production of nerve agents, including Novichok, but also completely destroyed all their reserves. This was done in accordance with international agreements under the control of OPCW international observers.”

But deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov told Interfax news agency: “I want to state with all possible certainty that the Soviet Union or Russia had no programmes to develop a toxic agent called Novichok.”

Vassily Nebenzia, Russia’s representative at the UN Security Council, repeated the assertion and told delegates: “In the Russian Federation there was no scientific research or development work under the title Novichok…in 1992 in the Russian Federation, Soviet developmental work was stopped, and in 2017 it completed the destruction of all existing stocks of chemical weapons. “

Russia announced the destruction of its declared chemical weapons stockpiles in September, but had never admitted the creation of Novichoks or the development facilities associated with them.

Dr Lewis said the fact Novichoks were not listed substances on the global Chemical Weapons Convention created a “loophole” meaning they were not monitored by international agencies.

Russia has said it will cooperate with the OPCW’s investigations, but attacked the organisation just four months ago after it found ally Bashar al-Assad had used sarin in rebel-held areas in Syria.

Foreign ministry officials called an OPCW report biased, "unprofessional and amateur”, claiming that civilian deaths in Khan Sheikhoun may have been “staged”.

Russia blocked UN Security Council action against its Syrian allies, then proposed changing the rules for inspectors at the Hague-based watchdog in ways that Western diplomats said would undermine its work.

Where else could Novichok have come from?
Some analysts have claimed that Novichoks could have been smuggled out of chemical weapons and storage sites after the collapse of the Soviet Union, when facilities were abandoned by unpaid staff and security was low.

Whistleblowers said they were only ever made in Shikhany, central Russia, and then tested at the Nukus site in Uzbekistan, which was decontaminated with US support.

While weaponised nerve agents degrade over time, if the precursor ingredients were smuggled out in the 1990s, stored in proper conditions and mixed recently, they could still be deadly in a small-scale attack according to some experts.

“Could somebody have smuggled something out?” said Amy Smithson, a chemical weapons expert at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies.

“I certainly wouldn’t rule that possibility out, especially a small amount and particularly in view of how lax the security was at Russian chemical facilities in the early 1990s.”

In 1995, a Russian banking magnate called Ivan Kivelidi and his secretary died from organ failure after being poisoned with a military grade toxin found on an office telephone.

A closed trial found that his business partner had obtained the substance via intermediaries from an employee of a state chemical research institute known as GosNIIOKhT, which was involved in the development of Novichoks.

The employee, Leonard Rink, told police he had been storing poisons in his garage and selling them to pay off debts.

Novichoks could theoretically be manufactured by other states but experts believe the creation of a weaponised form of the nerve agent outside the former Soviet Union is exceptionally unlikely.

The binary agents are created by mixing unrestricted chemicals together, but need “extremely specialist facilities with high levels of security and protections for workers”.

Dr Lewis said that under chemical weapons convention and international law, it would be legal for countries to develop small amounts of Novichoks in order to build defences against them.

“I would be extremely surprised if since 1992 the chemical weapons experts in a serious number of countries which had chemical weapons capabilities have not sought to make small amounts to defend against it,” she added.

“It would be legitimate, legal and one would say they have a duty to do so.”

Dr Lewis said the fact Porton Down scientists identified the substance known as Novichok suggested they had information on its chemical structure.

There have been mounting concerns about the chemical weapons capability of North Korea, particularly following the murder of Kim Jong-un’s brother using VX in Malaysia last year.

She said experts were questioning whether the totalitarian state could be manufacturing nerve agents and selling them to non-state actors, but there was no evidence of Novichoks being in North Korea’s arsenal.

What are the other theories?
Some critics have cast doubt on the findings of British intelligence agencies by citing the false conclusions that Saddam Hussain had undeclared weapons of mass destruction, which sparked the Iraq War.

Jeremy Corbyn suggested that the nerve agent attack could have been carried out by Russian-linked gangsters rather than ordered by Moscow.

“To rush way ahead of the evidence being gathered by the police, in a fevered parliamentary atmosphere, serves neither justice nor our national security,” he wrote in The Guardian.

”In my years in parliament I have seen clear thinking in an international crisis overwhelmed by emotion and hasty judgments too many times.

“Flawed intelligence and dodgy dossiers led to the calamity of the Iraq invasion.”

Several alternative theories and conspiracies have been raised, although few provide a credible means and motive for another actor attacking Mr Skripal – a former Russian double agent who was given refuge in the UK after selling secrets to MI6.

Some have accused Britain itself of launching the attack as a “false flag” to smear Russia, damage Mr Putin ahead of elections or even to distract from a grooming scandal in Telford.

Mr Nebenzia told the UN Security Council that the “most probable source” of the Novichok was countries that had been carrying out research on nerve agents since the 1990s, including the UK.

Russian media reports have also suggested that the US stole samples of Novichoks while decontaminating a former Soviet Union testing plant in Uzbekistan from 1999 onwards.

Proponents of the theory claim that the US may have launched the attack itself, either through the “deep state” or because of Mr Skripal’s potential links to the private security firm that compiled a dossier of allegations against Donald Trump.

Or, they say, Americans passed the nerve agent or details on how to manufacture it to British allies, with many citing the proximity of Porton Down to the location of the attack.

Ukraine has been raised as another potential culprit, in the belief that it would seek to discredit Russia to gain international backing against pro-Russian separatists fighting an ongoing war against government forces.

Other conspiracy theorists have blamed wide-ranging targets including the EU or pro-Remain elements in Britain.

“I believe this is all to derail Brexit,” said one caller to LBC radio. “It's to make us look isolated and vulnerable against Russia so that we stay in the EU.”

Ben Nimmo, of the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab, said many Russian news articles furthering the theories were based on “interviews with former security chiefs and weird commentators” with no expertise or credibility.

He told The Independent a mounting disinformation campaign was using the “same techniques” as those seen after incidents including the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight 17 using a missile from Russia.

“You can think of them as dismiss, distort, distract and dismay,” Mr Nimmo said. “You insult the critic, then distort by falsifying the evidence.

“Distract is the whole ‘if they accuse you, you accuse them’ method, and then there’s the conspiracy theorists. Dismay comes when they threaten ‘horrible things will happen if you do this’.”

Mr Putin’s spokesperson said Russia “won’t take long” to respond to the UK’s expulsion of diplomats, while a foreign ministry representative suggested British journalists could be kicked out of the country.

Queen Elizabeth prepared the speech at the height of the Cold War
After the poisoning of Sergei Skripal in Salisbury, the UK has pointed the finger at Russia for organising a “hit” on British soil and people are beginning to speak of a New Cold War

The Queen has a speech prepared in case this terrible event does happen. It may have been written nearly forty years ago and is of its time, but it is still relevant today.

It reads: “The horrors of war could not have seemed more remote as my family and I shared our Christmas joy with the growing family of the Commonwealth.

"Now, this madness of war is once more spreading through the world and our brave country must again prepare itself to survive against great odds.

Queen Elizabeth: Tensions between the UK and Russia have been high since Sergei Skripal was poisoned
ensions between Russia and the UK have been escalating.

Putin hit back at the UK’s accusations and Theresa May’s “ultimatum”.

In response to the alleged poisoning, the UK expelled 23 high-level 'diplomats', which the Prime Minister said were in reality "undeclared intelligence officers".

The move marks the biggest such dismissal in more than 30 years.

Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated Moscow’s claim the Kremlin had “no connection” to the poisoning of double agent Sergei Skripal in Salisbury and issued a stark warning to the UK.

Russian news agency Tass quoted Mr Peskov as saying: "Moscow's stance is well-known, London was told about Moscow's position through diplomatic channels. Moscow has no connection to the incident that took place in the United Kingdom.

"Moscow won't accept absolutely unfounded accusations against it, which are not substantiated by any evidence, and won't accept the language of ultimatum."

Mr Putin has already warned British Prime Minister Theresa May not to make threats to a "nuclear power" just days after making a speech in which he boasted Russia has developed a new array of nuclear weapons that are invincible, including a cruise missile that he said could "reach anywhere in the world."

So what happens when a hydrogen bomb-tipped Intercontinental Ballistic Missile heads our way.

Well, unlike many of our European counterparts there will not be a series of World War 2 style klaxons – the so-called Four Minute Warning.

What will actually happen is that the Government will take over your mobile phone – advising you to get to safety.

A missile from Russia would take about 20 minutes to reach the British capital, given that it would have to pass over many Nato allies territory triggering alerts, it is estimated that the UK would realistically have about 10 minutes to respond.

In that time, the UK government would need to get the message out to the public.

GCHQ can easily contact every registered mobile in the country and send out an emergency SMS alert.

They also have the ability to block access to Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) blocking outgoing calls and making your device a one way communicator providing you with important instructions and leaving mobile signal for emergency services only.

What those instructions would be exactly are unknown.

In Japan last September residents were given a nuclear warning, with the advice to find a sturdy building or structure.

It came when Japanese TV stopped its morning news and cut to a black screen with an emergency message instructing the public to evacuate to a sturdy building or basement.

Mobile phones had also been taken over as SMS alerts also displayed the same warning and emergency sirens were sounded after a missile launched from North Korea flew over Japan and landed 500 nautical miles of the coast in the Pacific.

In the event of a nuclear attack on the British capital, the Prime Minister would have 10 minutes to issue a retaliation.

Super blue blood moon a ‘sign before WW3 and end of world'
In case of the Prime Minister being incapacitated or killed in an attack a letter of last resort will be given to the UK's four nuclear submarines.

No one knows what the letter states except the Prime Minister herself as each individual leader writes their own.

Although the UK has no protocol available to the public for a nuclear attack, the US have a website called read.gov with advice in the event of an attack.

It has a reassuring background of a fiery mushroom cloud and helpful points on what to do before, during and after and nuclear blast.

According to the guide, people should build a supply kit and make an emergency plan for your family, go as far below the ground as possible and should you survive, stay inside for the next two weeks.

Those inside were warned to stay in their home or other building with as few outside walls as possible and huddle under a table.

UK vs Russia LIVE: How Putin could attack NATO forces in a 'chaotic and brutal war' MAPPED
AN interactive map produced by a US think tank has given a terrifying glimpse of how a conflict between Russia and the West could play out as tensions between Putin and London soar.

This map gives an indication of the range of the various weapons Russia and NATA possess
Tensions are rising in Europe in the wake of allegations that President Vladimir Putin’s regime was responsible for a nerve gas attack on double agent Sergei Skripal and daughter Yulia which left both fighting for their lives in Salisbury.

And the map – published by the Washington-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies – offers a timely reminder of the risks should things escalate.

The map reveals the ranges of various Russian land attack, air defence and naval strike weapons close to its borders, with vast numbers of weapons located in Kaliningrad, the Russian enclave sandwiched between Lithuania and Poland.

It demonstrates how the Baltic States – Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia – are all well within range of Russia’s Iskander M ballistic missiles, which carry devastating 1,500-pound high-explosive warheads.

These weapons are also capable of reaching hundreds of miles into Poland, with NATO’s strategically important base at Zagan just within reach.

Points of reference for naval weapons are fixed – and these would obviously vary in the case of a real conflict.

With NATO, the map details the range of the alliance’s land-attack naval weapons and air defences, together with the location of key ports of debarkations (PODs) where it could land reinforcements by air and sea.

In 2014, a series of simulations undertaken by the US-based Research and Development corporation (RAND) concluded that as things stand, NATO was incapable of defending the Baltic States in the event of a military conflict.

May: Russian aggression is a growing danger for Baltic states

The war games suggested that in such circumstances, the longest it would take Russian forces to reach Tallinn and Riga, the capitals of Estonia and Latvia respectively, was 60 hours.

An article by analyst Robert Beckhausen on the nationalinterest.org website concluded: “In the event of a military conflict over the Baltic States, Russian missiles in Kaliningrad could target NATO troops heading from Poland.

“That could slow reinforcements were Russia to invade Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

“The Baltics would need those NATO reinforcements to have a chance, slim as it would be, to stop a vastly more numerous Russian army.”

The analysis also says NATO warships with Tomahawk missiles can reach Russia's biggest cities
In short – a war would be chaotic, brutal and terrible.

Analyst Robert Beckhausen

Mr Beckhausen added: “Air defences ring Russia’s Western periphery. S-300 and S-400 anti-aircraft missiles cover half of Poland and overlap in concentric circles over the Baltic States – requiring NATO to neutralise these sites during a conflict before its aircraft could provide cover for Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

“But the map also displays Russia’s clear vulnerabilities.

“NATO warships with Tomahawk missiles could easily reach Russia’s biggest cities – and strike the centre of government power – from considerable distance away.

“In short – a war would be chaotic, brutal and terrible.”

The soaring tensions come as the Russian ministry of defence announced one its MiG-31 interceptor jet had successfully made a training launch of Moscow’s terrifying new hypersonic missile in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The test launch comes just days after the Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Russia had developed a terrifying array of nuclear weapons that can reach anywhere in the world and are “invulnerable to enemy interception”.

Theresa May says she is working on a “full spectrum” retaliation against Mr Putin if Moscow is found responsible for the nerve agent hit on spy Sergei Skripal.

As tensions soar between the Russia and UK, here is a look at what Britain could expect if the Russian President decides to launch his newest deadly missile.

Russia said that UK's defences would wither against the might of its Kinzhal ‘dagger’ hypersonic missile.

At its unveiling Mr Putin earlier boasted Moscow had developed missiles that no other nation possesses.

The Kh-47M2 ‘dagger’ missile is designed to destroy surface and waterborne targets at speeds of up 7,700mph (12,390km/h) across 1,250 miles (2,012 km).

Commander-in-chief of the Russian Aerospace Force colonel general Sergei Surovikin said Russia’s new hypersonic “dagger” missile can be discharged within minutes.

He added the new system designed for a strike at targets at a distance of over 2,000 km can also “reliably breach all air defence and anti-ballistic missile”.

Russia also has a deadly, mobile intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in its arsenal which can travel up to 16,000 mph (25,000 km/h or 7km per second).

The RT-2PM Topol – nicknamed SS-25 Sickle by Nato – could easily reach the UK and according to the US Air Force National Air and Space Intelligence Center as of June 2017 Russia as around 100 launchers operationally deployed.

If an SS-25 was dropped on London an estimated 534,890 people would be killed according to the nuclear fallout calculator Nuke Map.

END OF CORBYN: Frontbenchers could QUIT over leader's Russia response in 'SHAME of Labour'

Corbyn: We need 'robust dialogue' with Russia after spy attack

The embattled Labour leader called the Salisbury attack an “appalling act of violence” but left open the possibility that the nerve agent could have been used by someone else other than the Kremlin in his statement to the House of Commons.

His reaction to Prime Minister Theresa May’s strongly-worded statement on Moscow prompted cries of “shame” from the Tory benches.

The anger only intensified when Mr Corbyn’s spin chief Seumas Milne said the failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq back in 2003 showed Government claims Russia is behind the attack could be wrong.

During an extraordinary briefing at Westminster, he told reporters: “The Government has access to information and intelligence on this matter which others don’t.

“However, also there is a history in relation to weapons of mass destruction and intelligence which is problematic, to put it mildly.”
The backlash has now prompted reports Labour frontbenchers are ready to walk out on the left-winger over he and Mr Milne’s response.

BBC’s political editor Laura Kuennssberg tweeted: “Rumour that some Labour shadow front benchers might resign over the leader's statement today - let's wait and see - certainly a lot of anger around - uneasy truce in Labour party since election has been trashed by different instincts over Skripal case.”

Chuka Umunna MP tweeted: “Have read the comments of the Leader of the Opposition’s spokesperson. Mr Milne’s comments do not represent the views of the majority of our voters, members or MPs. We’ll get abuse for saying so but where British lives have been put at risk it is important to be clear about this.

And Mike Gapes MP added: “I understand that Jeremy Corbyn’s spokesman Seumas Milne has claimed there is no proof that Russia is behind the nerve gas attack in Salisbury. Well Seumas has form on these matters.”

Jeremy Corbyn caused uproar in the Commons on Monday when he took a swipe at the Tories over donations to individuals linked to Russia rather than condemning the attack.

He insisted retaliatory action by Britain wold only “increase tensions”.

The shockingly deadly missile is more than 3000 times more powerful than the bomb which leveled Hiroshima – and it is virtually undetectable.

As Russia faces condemnation across the planet for the state-sponsored act of terror on the streets of Salisbury, the test is being seen as a clear and hostile message of war to the world.

Putin and his cronies have reacted to evidence Russia ordered the poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury by raising tensions with barely veiled warnings of military action.

And the latest is the testing of the terrifying ‘Satan 2’ – formally known as an RS-28, which makes all Russia’s existing nukes look like firecrackers.

The RS-28 statistics make for frightening reading:

• A single RS-28 is capable of wiping out an area the size of France or Texas – or the entire UK with one blast

• The RS-28 has an incredibly short launch-burn phase – the time US satellites find it easiest tot track – and it then basically disappears

• Because of its increased trajectory the Satan-2 can travel over the South Pole to hit the West rather than the shorter North Pole route. This again means it is invisible to US tracking satellites.

• The RS-28 carries 16 nuclear warheads which can be individually targeted – and a raft of high-tech counter-measures to further avoid detection.

• The Satan-2 packs a 50 MEGATON nuclear punch – more than 3000 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb.

The Satan-2 is due to enter service in 2019 or 2020.

The Russian foreign ministry this morning said the British response to the Salisbury spy attack was "irresponsible" and warned: "You won't have to wait long for a response."

The ministry said the UK's assertion Russia was behind the nerve agent attack was "not based on evidence".

Diplomatic tensions rise between Britain and Russia after a former Russian spy who worked for MI6 was poisoned in Salisbury.

Sergei Skripal along with his daughter Yulia were rushed to hospital after showing signs of poisoning and are fighting for their lives in a critical condition.

In a documentary earlier this month, Russian president Vladimir Putin made clear if Russia was under attack and faced being wiped out, then the world would not be worth saving.

In a TV documentary, he said: "I want to tell you, and I want this to be known here and abroad.

Russia war 2018: Vladimir Putin is expected to expel UK diplomats
The Russian foreign ministry this morning said the British response to the Salisbury spy attack was "irresponsible" and warned: "You won't have to wait long for a response."

“Our plans for using it (my nuclear arsenal), I am hoping it will never happen, our theoretical plans of using it is a so-called retaliatory, counter strike.

“A decision about using nuclear weapons can be made only if our missile warning system recorded not only the launch of missiles, but also gave an accurate prediction of flight trajectories and the time when the warheads fall on Russia.”

Mr Putin has already warned British Prime Minister Theresa May not to make threats to a "nuclear power" just days after making a speech in which he boasted Russia has developed a new array of nuclear weapons that are invincible, including a cruise missile that he said could "reach anywhere in the world."

Moscow today said it is still ready to work with London to investigate a chemical weapons attack in Britain on a former Russian double agent, but Britain is refusing to cooperate.

Britain has said it will kick out 23 Russian diplomats and impose other sanctions against Russia to punish it for poisoning Sergei Skripal and his daughter, something Moscow denies.

Speaking at a weekly news briefing, Ms Zakharova said she wondered how other countries could show solidarity with Britain in the Skripal case if they did not possess information about the case.

Zakharova said "the truth" about the incident was being hidden.

This week Ms Zakharova made a blunt warning to the Prime Minister, saying nobody should threaten a nuclear power.

Investigators have identified the substance used to poison Mr Skripal and his daughter as a chemical used by Russia during the Cold War.

Mr Skripal, a former Russian spy turned MI6 agent, and his dauther are currently in a critical condition after they were found unconscious in Salisbury, Wiltshire, shortly after 4pm on Sunday, March 4.

Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov has insisted Russia had nothing to do with the poisoning and President Putin has refused to respond to Britain's ultimatum and provide answers over the chemical attack.

It also emerged this morning Russian diplomats are attempting to gain consular access to Yulia Skripal, the daughter of Mr Skripal, who is said to be in a critical but stable condition alongside her father.

Russian news agency Interfax has cited a source as saying the Russian embassy in London plans to today request that officials be allowed to visit the 33-year-old.

Russia has responded to the PM's retaliatory measures
Russia last night issued a chilling warning to Britain not to threaten a nuclear power.

Theresa May has accused Russia of direct involvement in the poisoning of former spy Mr Skripal who was targeted with a Soviet-era, military-grade nerve agent known as Novichok.
The PM is expected to impose tough sanctions against Moscow this morning, including booting out Russian diplomats and seizing assets from Russian cronies.

Russia is not afraid of any ultimatums the United Kingdom opted for in its investigation into the poisoning of former colonel of Russia’s Main Intelligence Directorate Sergey Skripal and his daughter, said Russian Permanent Representative to the EU Vladimir Chizhov in an interview with TV channel Euronews.

He said: "Unfortunately, London opted for a language of ultimatums. I can say that the language of ultimatums won’t be of any help in dealing with Russia, as Russia is not afraid of anything.

"I think that both London and other western capitals could see it for themselves.

"I am disappointed with the debates that are being held in the British parliament and the official statements that are made instead of looking into the whole situation and involving Russia in the investigation."
