But Malchi-Zedek, king of Salem, brought out bread and wine; he was a priest of God, the Most High.
GENESIS (14:18)
Since Biblical times Jerusalem has been a city connected to Divine justice. Where can we see this? In today's verse, Malchi-Zedek, King of Salem makes a congratulatory feast for Abraham who has just won a war. What do we know about Malchi-Zedek? Malchi-Zedek's name means 'king of justice' and he is described as a priest of God because he celebrates Abraham's victory as Divine justice. And what city does Malchi-Zedek rule? He is King of Salem which Biblical commentators say is an early name for Jerusalem! Even before knowledge of one God and His righteous ways had spread throughout the world, the concept of Divine justice was inherent to Salem, Israel's future capital, today's Jerusalem.
