The Evening.

Ministry of the Holy Spirit. Part One.

Romans 8:26 (KJV) Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

The believer needs help in prayer unto God, because [we know not what we should pray for as we ought].
This could mean that the Spirit directs us to the subjects he wants us to pray for, [we know not what we should pray for], and we need his help in how to pray [as we ought].

The Spirit’s help is needed because of [our infirmities].
The word [helpeth] in the original Greek paints a picture of One coming to the aid & help of someone about to fall, not only that but giving them continuous support.

At the very heart of the original Greek word translated here [infirmities] is weakness, it is also translated [sickness], so what kind of weakness is it?

Romans 6:19 (KJV) I speak after the manner of men [because of the infirmity of your flesh]: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

So in prayer as in life, our weakness is of the flesh. The flesh wars against the Spirit at all times, during times of prayer we will especially need the help of the Spirit to lift us up from the mundane dung hill of our lives.

On what basis does the Spirit help us, can we be guaranteed of his help & support.

Hebrews 4:15 (KJV) For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with [the feeling of our infirmities]; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

Our authority for his continued ministry is Christ Our Great High Priest, who veiled himself in our humanity and is touched with the feeling of our weakness yet without sin.

but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered

The Spirit’s ministry of intercession is to do primarily with communication, when the one who is praying is so battered and broken by events in their life that praying becomes very hard, or the backslider wants forgiveness and to come back to God but his shame strikes him dumb, or pride has so  



warped a man as to make him afraid to speak incase he angers God.

Sometimes you just can’t find the right Words, or what your going through has no words to express it, the Spirit has made provision for you, [with groanings which cannot be uttered].
Sometimes that is all that can be wrenched from our soul, no words just pure emotion from the centre of our being.

Sometimes our lives are so complicated that all we can do is present it to God to sort it out, for it is beyond us.

Sometimes we are under attack from the enemy and at wits end.

Let us try to remember that when we pray we are not without help, we have the Comforter who comes along side to help and support us in our prayers.

Prayer is a conversation with GOD, and if you listen very carefully you may hear the sound of the Devil’s knees knocking together in terror at the sight of a saint on their knees in prayer.

Prayer is Victory. Over the World. The Flesh, and The Devil.
For in Prayer you are turning to God, and away from the World.
