By the time he was in his early thirties, word was spreading about Billy Graham. He was invited to preach as a revivalist in Los Angeles.

Before the event, Billy discussed his plans on Stuart Hamblen’s radio show. That publicity sparked the interest of media magnate William Randolph Hearst, who covered the revival in his newspapers.



Initially planned for three weeks, the revival stretched to eight. God used Billy’s preaching to reach over 350,000 people, including Hamblen, television star Harvey Fritts, mobster Jim Vaus, and Olympian and World War II prisoner of war Louis Zamperini. But the event almost didn’t happen.



Going into the crusade, Billy Graham was struggling with doubts, about the Bible and his calling. But he stepped up and did his best. “The Los Angeles Crusade has humbled and driven me to my knees as never before,” Graham said. “People have wanted to praise me for what happened at Los Angeles during eight blessed weeks [but] God deserves all the glory.”
