In this week's edition: reports from Sudan, China, Vietnam and Iraq.

1. Church building in ruins; hostilities grow in Sudan
(Source: Compass Direct)
More than seven months after Muslim extremists burned its church building, a Presbyterian Church of the Sudan (PCOS) congregation is still afraid to meet for worship. The Rev. Maubark Hamad said his church in Wad Madani has not been able to rebuild since the January 15 devastation due to the congregation's meagre resources. Christian sources said they are increasingly fearful as Muslim extremists pose more threats against Christians in an attempt to rid what they call Dar al Islam, the "Land of Islam," of Christianity. The congregation's building was burned after a series of threats against its members by Muslims extremists. When church leaders reported the case to police, they were surprised to find officers reluctant to investigate.
Christians in Sudan are living beneath a blanket of fear since South Sudan seceded on July 9 (for more information, go to www.persecution.net/sd-2011-07-21.htm). Just one month after the south voted for independence from the predominantly Islamic north, pressures on churches and Christians have increased, with Muslim groups threatening to destroy churches, kill Christians and purge the country of Christianity.
Please pray the Lord will strengthen His Church in Sudan. May He protect believers from harm and grow the Church in faithfulness and in number. Ask Him to give them the grace to overcome their loss and their current fears. Pray they will have the desire to meet with one another for mutual encouragement and to act as witnesses for the gospel.

2. Investigation requested for missing human rights lawyer in China
(Source: ChinaAid Association)
VOM partner ChinaAid formally requested a special UN investigation into the torture of missing Christian lawyer Gao Zhisheng on August 15, the five-year anniversary of his first kidnapping by police. The request was submitted by ChinaAid's legal counsel and was filed with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture.
Human rights lawyer Gao was taken by police on August 15, 2006, from his sister's home and held incommunicado until the Chinese government announced on September 21 that he was being charged with inciting subversion (for more information, go to www.persecution.net/cn-2011-01-13.htm).
In March 2010, a group of human rights specialists filed a petition before the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which resulted in the discovery of serious wrongdoing by the Chinese government. However, Chinese authorities failed to even reply to the UN enquiry. Those involved were told that Gao's case is a matter of China's internal affairs, adding that the country is under rule of law.
ChinaAid founder and president, Bob Fu, and the organization's legal counsel, David E. Taylor, expect that China is likely to respond similarly to this request for a special UN investigation. "Nonetheless, we believe it is important for the international community to see again how the Chinese Communist Party responds with arrogance and recalcitrance to the UN, and to show the world, especially Gao's family and the Chinese government, that Gao has not been forgotten for even one second and never will be," Taylor said.
Please pray for Gao and his family; may they remain steadfast in the faith (1 Peter 5:8-10). Ask the Lord to use this current investigation request for His glory and for the benefit of Gao and other Chinese believers who are currently in prison for their faith.

3. Christian worshippers brutally beaten by police in Vietnam
(Source: International Christian Concern)
A violent attack against minority Degar Montagnard Christians in the central highlands of Vietnam took place in July, leaving 16 Christians severely injured. One Christian man remains under arrest, his condition unknown.
On July 7, at approximately 8 p.m., Vietnamese security forces and police descended upon a worship service in the village of Buon Kret Krot, Gai Lai Province, and began kicking and beating the attendees. Security forces threatened the villagers, stating: "If anyone worships like this way, we will return to arrest you all and put you in prison for five years." Of the Christians attacked, 10 men and two women were beaten to the point of unconsciousness.
Pray the Lord will bring swift and complete healing to those who were injured. Pray for the release of the believer who was arrested. Ask the Lord to strengthen these believers. Pray Christians in Vietnam will continue to meet together in spite of the opposition. Pray for the perpetrators of this attack. To post a prayer for these suffering believers, please visit our Persecuted Church Prayer Wall at www.persecution.net/prayerwall.

4. Church building bombed in Iraq
(Source: Compass Direct)
A wave of violence hit 17 cities in Iraq recently, claiming around 70 lives. Included in the attacks was the bombing of a church building in Kirkuk, marking the second round of assaults against the city's Christian community in recent weeks. On August 15 at 1:20 a.m., a bomb tore through one of the walls of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Mar Afram. Thankfully, no Christians were killed in the attack, but police have announced higher protective measures for Kirkuk's churches.
Earlier in the month, three other churches were targeted by insurgents. While police were able to disarm bombs near two of the churches, a third bomb detonated in front of the Holy Family Syriac Catholic Church.
About 334,000 Christians remain in Iraq, less than half of their number in 1991. The violence has caused hundreds of thousands of Iraqi people, both Muslim and Christian, to leave the country, and many more are displaced inside Iraq, particularly in Kurdistan.
Pray for the church in Iraq. Pray they will keep their eyes on Jesus, persevere in their faith, and not grow weary or lose heart (Hebrews 10:32-39; 12:1-3). Pray He will comfort and strengthen the many who are grieving. Ask him to intervene in the lives of Christians in Iraq to protect and preserve them.

1. Update: Court re-examining case of Iranian pastor sentenced to death
(Source: VOM contacts)
In early July, it was reported that the case of Youcef Nadarkhani, an Iranian pastor sentenced to death for leaving Islam, (see www.persecution.net/ir-2011-07-07.htm for more information) was being returned to a lower Iranian court. In recent days it was learned that his lawyer has finally received the written confirmation of the ruling from the Supreme Court. According to one source, the Supreme Court has agreed with the death sentence verdict. However, the court also found procedural flaws and is asking the lower court to re-examine the case. The judges are reportedly seeking clarification as to whether Pastor Youcef was truly a Muslim prior to becoming a Christian. If Pastor Youcef is determined to have been a "true" Muslim and does not recant his Christian faith the death sentence will stand. It is also feared that Pastor Youcef could be executed before the court re-examines the case.
Pray for enduring faith for Pastor Youcef as he continues to face severe pressure to deny his Saviour. Pray that officials will repent of their unjust actions and allow Youcef to be exonerated and released. Pray that all Iranian Christians imprisoned for their faith will be sustained by the love and presence of their Heavenly Father.
You can encourage Pastor Youcef today by writing him a letter online, in his own language, at www.PrisonerAlert.com. You can also download a free guide for writing prisoners of faith at www.persecution.net/write.htm.

2. House church leader kidnapped in Iraq
(Sources: VOM contacts, Deutsche Presse-Agentur)
A house church leader has been kidnapped by Muslims in Duhok, Iraq. A young Iraqi girl recently told VOM contacts that Muslims broke into her home and took her father, Jamal. Pastor Jamal works among the Shabak people -- a people who have Jewish roots and speak Arabic and Kurdish. It is suspected the militants targeted him for helping lead many Muslims to Christ. Several weeks ago, the home of one of Jamal's recent converts was sprayed with machine gun fire. Many fear that the militants, possibly members of al Qaida, will not give Jamal any option of release but immediately kill him.
Throughout Iraq, Christians in environments of violence continue to face the agonizing choice of fleeing their homes or remaining in a climate of fear and pressure. Most Christians have left the country or have been forced to move from their hometowns due to continuous attacks, and it is estimated that less than half of a million Christians remain. Despite threats against them, hundreds of Iraqi Christians in Kirkuk recently celebrated the opening of a new church -- the first to be built in eight years.
Pray that Jamal will be released and brought home safely. Pray that he will rest in the knowledge that the Good Shepherd is with him through his sufferings (Psalm 23). Pray that both he and his family will remain faithful to the Lord in this time of trial. Thank the Lord for the opening of the church in Kirkuk. Pray that the Church will continue to strengthen and grow, even amid the ongoing persecution.

3. South Sudan receives independence; Christians remain at risk
(Sources: Middle East Concern, VOM)
On July 9, Sudan and South Sudan officially became separate nations -- a separation in accordance with a referendum held in January (see www.persecution.net/sd-2011-06-16.htm for more information). The secession comes after a long history of violence and conflict, including two civil wars between the largely Islamic north and the Christian and animist majority in the south. Christians, in particular, have endured severe opposition.
Although many people, from Sudanese Christians to international leaders, have expressed hope over the South's independence, it is clear that the people on both sides of the new border continue to be at risk of violence and religious freedom violations. In the months leading up to the secession, clashes erupted in several areas. Government agents and Islamic militants looted churches and killed Christians in regions of South Kordofan state. There remain concerns that churches in the Sudan may face further restrictions on their freedom of worship if the government implements a strict form of Shariah, or Islamic, law. With Christians continuing to flee to South Sudan, it is also feared that remaining believers in the north could be especially vulnerable to violence, pressure, and baseless accusations of defaming Islam.
Pray that Sudanese Christians will be examples of justice, peace and love as their nation navigates through this chapter of transition. Pray that the government of Sudan will listen to the concerns of the international community and recognize the importance of religious freedom. Pray that Christians in both Sudan and South Sudan will continue to entrust themselves to Christ knowing Jesus is the ruler over the kings of the earth (2 Timothy 1:7-12, Revelation 1:5).

4. Lao pastors languishing in prison
(Source: Compass Direct)
Two Lao pastors arrested six months ago for holding a "secret meeting" are languishing in prison due to the harsh conditions. In early January, officials arrested Pastor Wanna along with 10 other believers and detained them for celebrating Christmas without prior approval. Within days police had released nine of the detainees. Wanna, however, and another local pastor, Yohan, remain imprisoned.
Prison authorities have repeatedly told the men that they will be freed as soon as they sign documents renouncing their faith. After a recent visit, Wanna's family members observed that he had lost weight, contracted an infection and seemed extremely weak. Both Wanna and Yohan's families are also facing hardship, as the men were the principal providers for their families. Several of Wanna's children have since left school to find work.
Pray for health and strength for Wanna. Pray that he and Yohan will continue to draw on the Lord, knowing that He can equip them with the faith and hope they need to endure their chains. Ask God to comfort and provide for their families in this time. Pray that the charges against them will be dropped and that they will be released. Pray that the Word of God will continue to be declared with clarity, boldness, love and power by all believers in Laos.

Religious Freedom Under Attack in China.. LETS STAND WITH THESE PRECIOUS BELIEVERS.. SHARE WHERE YOU CAN.. GET YOUR CHURCH INVOLVED
Show Solidarity with Shouwang: Sign the Signature Campaign
A few weeks before Easter this year, an independent house church in Beijing started to make international headlines. Beginning April 10, when members of Shouwang Church tried to hold a Sunday worship service in an open-air plaza in northwest Beijing, the world's biggest media organizations have been on hand each Sunday to document police taking into custody scores of Chinese Christians who wanted nothing more than to peacefully exercise their constitutionally guaranteed right to practice their religion. Hundreds have been detained and released or put under extra-judicial house arrest for varying periods; the church's top leaders have been illegally confined to their homes since April 9. (See links below for details reported by major news organizations.)
While the trigger for this now-weekly church-state stand-off was Shouwang's loss of its worship site in early April when its landlord, under government pressure, evicted the 1000-member church from its leased premises, the dispute is not simply over church property or whether Christians in China are allowed to worship outdoors.
What happens to Shouwang and how China's authoritarian leadership deals with a fearless church that has a stated goal of being "a city on a hill" is a harbinger for the future of China's social development and, by extension, what kind of nation China will become. Will the ruling Communist Party tolerate the existence of a peaceful, patriotic and law-abiding but rapidly expanding group of citizens, whose ranks are increasingly joined by society's greatest influencers - lawyers, internationally acclaimed scholars, successful international businessmen - who not only resolutely refuse to join the ranks of government-sanctioned churches but who boldly proclaim allegiance to a higher authority?
Even non-China specialists recognize the import of the Shouwang case. See in particular Washington Post columnist Michael Gerson likening the petition to a "founding document for a new China" (http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/a-founding-document-for-a-new-china/2011/05/12/AFT5CV1G_story.html).
With the 2012 Communist Party Congress and its much-anticipated leadership change approaching, China is at a critical crossroads. Historically, the Party's response is to clamp down and try to obliterate any potentially or perceived destabilizing elements.
But in the 21st century, with a rising China that is increasingly a major world player, the international community has an unprecedented opportunity - and indeed a responsibility - to send a strong, clear message to China's leaders that the governments of modern, civilized and advanced nations are expected to uphold their own constitutions, grant and protect civil liberties, including religious freedom, and establish a rule of law that requires law-enforcement personnel to also be law-abiding.
You play a critical role in getting that message across. You can do that simply by adding your name to the Shouwang signature campaign and writing a brief message of encouragement at
http://www.helpsw.org/p/helpshouwang.html

In this week's edition: reports from Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan
***********************************
1. Seven Iranian Christians released
(Source: VOM-USA)
Seven Iranian Christians who were arrested on December 26, along with 31 other believers, were recently released from prison on bail. On January 26, two men and a woman were released in Isfahan. Three days later, four women were released from Tehran's notoriously brutal Evin prison. The release of one of the women, Sara Akhaven, involved her family giving up their trade license in exchange for her bail. If authorities decide Sara has broken bail, however, the family's livelihood will be gone. Sadly, the trade license was not valuable enough to secure bail for Sara's sister, Leila, who remains in prison. Some of the original 31 Christians who were arrested have reportedly been released.
The recently released believers reported that they spent over a month in solitary confinement and endured hours of interrogation and torture. It is likely that those who remain detained continue to face the same brutal treatment. Among those who remain in prison is a couple with two children. Although their mother, Maryam, has been able to phone her children from prison, they have not heard from their father, Rasool, in over a month. All of the other prisoners have reportedly been able to call their families, so there is great concern for Rasool's condition.
Thank the Lord for the release of these believers. Pray that they will remain faithful in witnessing about Christ. Pray all imprisoned Christians in Iran will be released. Pray they will be emboldened and equipped by God's grace as they suffer. Pray for Iranian Christians who face extreme pressure and opposition under the government's new policy of "religious cleansing."

2. Pakistani Christian killed by Muslim employer
(Source: Agenzia Fides)
A young Christian man was recently killed by his Muslim employer in Gujranwala district, Punjab province, Pakistan. On February 5, Imran Masih, 24, stayed home from his job as a driver for two local Muslims because he was ill. When Imran returned to work the next day, his employer verbally confronted him, attacked him and killed him. Imran's body was brought to his father, Lal Masih, the next day, with the employer claiming that he committed suicide. Lal, who is also employed by the same estate, said that his son's body was covered in blood and bore clear signs of torture. Local people also reported that they had heard the employer insult and attack Imran the night of his death. Lal went to the police station to file a report about the unjust treatment of his son's death. However, the assistant sub-inspector refused to accept it, allegedly due to the influence of the Muslim employer in the area.
Only after activists from the All Pakistan Minorities Alliance made a public protest in Gujranwala did the police officially record formal murder charges and damages against the employer and his accomplices.
Pray for the family members and friends mourning the loss of Imran. Pray that, as sufferings overflow, their comfort in Christ will abound (2 Corinthians 1:5). Pray the truth in Imran's death will come to light. Ask God to change the hearts and minds of the Muslim responsible for this brutal murder, leading to repentance.

3. Update: Christian Convert from Islam facing execution in Afghanistan
(Source: World Evangelical Alliance - Religious Liberty Commission)
Said Musa, who was imprisoned for converting from Islam to Christianity, is reportedly facing execution. A 15-year employee of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Kabul, Afghanistan, Said, 45, was arrested on May 31, 2010, after a television station in Kabul broadcast images that allegedly showed Western Christians baptizing Afghans. Since his arrest, he has remained in Kabul Detention Center, where he has reportedly suffered sexual assault and torture and been denied access to a lawyer.
In the second week of February, an Afghan judge reportedly informed Said that he would be hanged within days if he did not renounce his faith in Christ and reconvert to Islam. Godfrey Yogarajah, the Executive Director of The Religious Liberty Commission of the World Evangelical Alliance, recently called attention to the illegal and unjust treatment of Said. "The arrest of Said in the first place and the subsequent demands for death for apostasy violate at least three provisions of the Constitution of Afghanistan," he said. Said's trial is reportedly the first for apostasy that has reached near execution since the Taliban's fall.
Pray for God's enduring comfort and peace for Said in prison. Pray that, even in chains, he will exalt and praise his Lord -- a God of compassion, justice and truth. Pray for his release. Pray also for Said's wife and six children, who fled to Pakistan after his arrest, that they, too, will continue to find strength in Christ.

4. Uzbek Christians facing prosecution after police raid
(Source: Forum 18 News)
Authorities who raided a Christian meeting in Syrdarya Region, central Uzbekistan, in January, are reportedly preparing to prosecute several of the Christians present. On January 6, 12 police officials broke into the home of Pastor Andrey Shevchenko, where approximately 25 members of an unregistered local Baptist church were gathered to celebrate the baptism of Christ. The officials confiscated DVDs, CDs and Christian books. They also forced some of the believers to write statements. Pastor Andrey showed the police documents proving that the material had been purchased from the officially registered Bible Society of Uzbekistan. However, police told him that the literature would be sent to the State Religious Affairs Committee in the capital Tashkent for "expert analysis." In early February, police reported that they are planning to prosecute Pastor Andrey and other local Christians under the code of Administrative Offences for "violation of the law on religious organisations" and "illegal storage, production, import or distribution of religious materials."
Pray for strength of faith for these Christians as they face opposition. Pray they will not face charges or fines. Pray they will bear witness to the love and grace of Christ, even to their persecutors. Pray Uzbek authorities will treat all of their citizens with true justice.

Re: Keith of Simply Scriptures ~Prayer Request
Dear friends
As you know I have been seeking work for an awful long time. Applied for 2 jobs today at University of Cumbria. I feel in my spirit that I am called to share the gospel by preaching. It is a feeling deep within my spirit. Please pray that I would know God's will on this matter. If the Lord has not and does not want me to preach then that's totally fine. I just want and need to be in the very centre of his will. I am blessed to have and thank God for the writing ministry that HE has graciously given me. The People who have asked me to preach live in such places as Kenya, Pakistan Uganda and India etc etc. The apostles started at Jerusalem and went the other way round, maybe it is because I am different and unique.. (you can say that again)!!!!!!!.. that the Lord wants me to start overseas
I am seeking the lord every day for my future, but maybe I have to surrender to the call of God on my life to minister overseas or at home
Please pray with me
Thanks
