KYIV, Ukraine—Since 2014, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s military aggression in Ukraine has rearranged the national defense chessboards of countries across Eastern Europe.
In turn, the NATO military alliance has deployed weapons and troops eastward, to “make clear that an attack on one Ally would be considered an attack on the whole Alliance,” said NATO’s website. And the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has approved delivery of American anti-tank weapons to Ukraine.
Yet, U.S. and NATO military leaders may have it wrong when it comes to anticipating Russia’s next military move in the region, a U.S. think tank says.
“The Russian military is well-positioned to launch a short-notice conventional war in Ukraine and a hybrid war in the Baltic states, the opposite of what Western leaders seem to expect in each theater,” Catherine Harris and Frederick Kagan wrote in a March report for the Institute for the Study of War.

Isaiah 66:8 records the famous question 'can a nation be born in a day?' 2,700 years later the question was answered. Despite insurmountable odds, Israel - armed with help from above and the heroic courage of its men and women - was born in a day on May 14, 1948. 
In this article we are going to look at three unique heroes of Israel's miraculous modern-day re-birth.  
olda Meir is famous for becoming Israel's first female Prime Minister in 1969. However, many are unaware of the pivotal role she played in 1948. 
Israel desperately needed modern weapons if it's rag-tag band of Jewish fighters were to stand a chance against the impending onslaught by five modern Arab armies. 
However, their main funding source - the US Jewish community - was already stretched to the limit with various local projects such as schools and other Jewish institutions. They were growing tired of the incessant appeals for help from the Jews of Palestine, and it was estimated that they would only be able to raise $5 million for Israel - just a fraction of the amount needed. 
Zionist leader Golda Meir immediately volunteered to go to America. Two days later she was on her way having had no time to bring any more baggage than her handbag! Armed with $10 in her pocket, the determined Golda set out in search for the missing millions. 
Coinciding with her arrival in Chicago was a meeting of the leaders of Jewish federations from across the US. However, many of these distinguished Jewish leaders were indifferent or even hostile to Golda's Zionist ideas. 
Warned not to address this particular group, Golda ignored the warning and delivered a rousing impromptu speech to the gathering about the dire challenges facing the fledgling state. Explaining that the survival of Palestine's 700,000 Jews as well as the whole dream of a Jewish nation was at stake, she stressed the absolute immediate need for funds to fight.

Hamas has adopted a new method of fighting Israel by using civilians in the same way it did during Operation Protective Edge in 2014 -- as human shields.
The "Return March" planned for Friday is a cynical exploitation of Palestinian refugees and a publicity stunt that has no political benefit.
The refugee problem can only be solved through diplomatic means by a body representing the Palestinians that recognizes Israel's right to exist -- not through a terrorist organization that wants to destroy it.
ven if Hamas makes a huge media impact with its march, within a few weeks it will disappear into a cloud of oblivion.
The military wing of Hamas began a "defense exercise" on March 25 in the Gaza Strip. Sources in Gaza say it is a show of strength in preparation for the large "Return March," which is supposed to take place between Land Day on March 30 and Nakba Day on May 15.
According to these sources, the exercise sends a double message. On the one hand, it is a message to residents of Gaza wanting to participate in the march that there is someone who will defend them from the Israel Defense Forces.

Palestinians Defy US Taylor Force Act With $355 Million For 'Pay-for-Slay'

The Palestinian Authority's budget for 2018 will include a $355 million financial reward for convicted terrorists and their families, in open defiance of recently-passed US legislation that conditions future American aid to the Palestinians on a verifiable end to a policy dubbed by critics as "pay-for-slay."
Nearly 8 percent of the PA's $5 billion budget will be spent on the payments. In 2017, these funds were distributed across 21,500 so-called "martyrs families" using a sliding scale that provides the greatest compensation for the most severe acts of terror. 
Many beneficiaries receive upwards of $2,000 per month in a territory where the average monthly salary is less than $600. According to World Bank calculations, the average Palestinian family in the West Bank faces monthly expenditures of $1,000.
An examination of the PA's 2018 budget conducted by Palestinian Media Watch -- an Israeli research and advocacy organization -- noted on Tuesday that almost half of the PA's anticipated foreign aid budget of $775 million is being spent on the terror payments.
"In open defiance of the US, other donor countries, and Israel, the PA's new budget shows it is continuing to reward terror," the report argued.
The report highlighted that "for the first time since 2014, the PA has stopped attempting to hide that it is the PA that pays salaries to all the terrorist prisoners."

Just when you thought Planned Parenthood could not possibly sink any lower -- it did.
On Tuesday morning, Planned Parenthood Keystone, a branch of the left-leaning group in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, tweeted out a deeply disturbing list of "needs."
After the jaw-dropping tweet received serious blowback even from liberal supporters, Planned Parenthood Keystone deleted it -- shocker. screencapped it before it was removed, though. And Prager U retweeted the atrocity as well, alerting followers and others to the organization's agenda.
There will be no hiding from this one. In the tweet, the organization said, "We need a Disney Princess who's had an abortion."
The tweet then went on to discuss the need for Disney princesses who are pro-choice, undocumented immigrants, union workers -- and trans.

"I Can Only Imagine" was the biggest Christian hit single of all time. It's now a movie. And you might just take an unsaved friend to see it.
Thousands of years ago, the Psalmist wrote, "The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them."
Today, we can laugh along with Him. In the nation's theaters, a low-budget film with a strong Christian theme is handily outperforming a heavily promoted, big-budget, Academy Award-winning film celebrating a homoerotic relationship between an underage teenager and an adult.

It did so even though the gay-themed film, "Love, Simon," is being shown in 50 percent more theaters.
This is good news on several fronts--most importantly, that when films like "I Can Only Imagine" are made, they reach people who never set foot in church.
"I Can Only Imagine" is the story of Bart Millard, lead vocalist of the Christian band, MercyMe. In 2001, Bart's "I Can Only Imagine," became the biggest contemporary Christian hit single ever, crossing over to achieve success in mainstream markets, as well.

Dale Archer writes, "It's difficult to believe that our founding fathers powdered their wigs gray in order to appear older and wiser. That's right--being old was in. No more! From hair dyes to Botox to Viagra to wrinkle creams to a plethora of surgical procedures, the race is on to remain forever young."
The bias against growing old is not just cosmetic. According to the Wall Street Journal, complaints of age discrimination filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission have increased in recent years. 
Paul Irving, chairman of the Milken Institute Center for the Future of Aging, says, "Workers over 50 are burdened by an outdated definition of 'old.' Despite evidence to the contrary, they are unfairly judged to be costly, less productive and agile, and unable to learn." He adds that "older workers are rarely represented in corporate diversity and inclusion initiatives."

The past few weeks have seen a spike in deadly, unorganized Palestinian terrorist attacks, and Israeli security forces are now preparing for a further rise in tensions in the coming weeks.
The attackers appear to be acting on their own, fitting into one of two broad categories of terrorism. The first category involves organized attempted bombing and shooting attacks on Israeli targets, which are planned out and activated by major armed terror entities, such as Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

John Bolton, who has a history of advocating muscular foreign policy, will guide the White House as the new national security adviser in facing threats from Russia, Iran, North Korea, and China, experts note.
President Donald Trump picked Bolton, who served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under President George W. Bush, to replace Army Gen. H.R. McMaster.
News of the appointment came Friday, three days before Trump expelled 60 Russian diplomats and intelligence officers from the United States and weeks before the president is tentatively set to meet North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.
The change also comes as the administration wrestles with fixing or nixing the Iran nuclear deal made by former President Barack Obama, and as China continues its economic and military expansion.

Recent developments in America’s courts and legislatures have brought home a reality that I discussed in this space last summer: Transgender activists seek to undermine parental rights.
Transgenderism is part of a movement that is hostile to traditional family life. The traditional family is based on the idea that the needs of children are supplied by parents with rights and responsibilities to meet those needs.
While the state can interfere in cases of abuse or neglect, generally protecting parents’ freedom is the best way to ensure that children are well provided for.
Wherever the state deals with children, such as in schools or in foster care, there are bound to be conflicts between parents and the state. This conflict in the sphere of education is why transgender activists spend much time trying to reform the way schools educate.
The state has greater power over foster parents than over birth parents because the state has assigned children to foster families, and it oversees the care they give. Transgender activists are sure to use those conflicts to spread the assumptions of the transgender movement.
Two developments—one in California and one in Delaware—in the past few weeks point toward greater developments in the spread of transgender ideology.
A bill has been proposed in California to extend state regulation of foster parents. Foster children are already provided access to medical and dental care, which helps defray the costs of foster parents. The proposed law would extend that state benefit to include “gender-affirming health care and gender-affirming behavioral health care” if the child, the foster parents, the state-appointed child advocate, or a lawyer asks for such treatment.

It is sad but possibly to be expected that many Palestinian Christians - who are constantly under threat but have not been killed or expelled - identify closely with the cause of their Muslim fellows as they engage in often violent "resistance" to Israel and the limited Israeli "occupation" of the West Bank (Judaea and Samaria). 
Christians may have a long history in Syria and Palestine, but the earliest Christians, including Christ, were, of course, Jews. According to Christianity Today:
The Acts of the Apostles states that the first Christians in Jerusalem were Jews, and historians believe that even after the fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70, Christianity in the Holy Land kept its Jewish flavor. 
But the Jewish revolt of Bar-Kokhba in 135 changed all this; Rome showed no mercy to the Jews and obliterated Jerusalem, renaming the city "Aelia Capitolina" and the country of Israel "Palestine." With this blow, the Christian Jewish community effectively disappeared.

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley slammed the UN Human Rights Council on Friday after it approved a slew of anti-Israel decisions within the framework of its infamous "Agenda Item 7."
"Today, the UN Human Rights Council adopted five resolutions condemning Israel," Haley said in a statement. "At the same time, the council adopted only one resolution each against North Korea, Iran, and Syria. 
Every March, the council sets aside only two sessions to debate human rights violations and abuses in all countries and another entire session just to debate a single country, Israel."

Less than a month ago -- in advance of the summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul -- the Turkish daily Yeni Şafak, which is considered one of the mouthpieces of Erdogan and his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), published an article entitled "A Call for Urgent Action."
The same article was also published on the newspaper's website with the more explicit title: "What if an Army of Islam was Formed Against Israel?" The article openly called on the 57 member states of the OIC to form a joint "Army of Islam" to simultaneously attack Israel from the east, west, north and south.
According to Israel's Shin Bet, the source of the article appears to be the Turkish company SADAT, which among other sinister plots, is aiding Hamas with funds and military gear to create a "Palestinian" army to join in the fight against Israel.
The idea of creating an "Army of Islam" to destroy Israel was accompanied by an interactive map providing formation of military forces for a joint Muslim attack on Israel. It also provides details on military forces based in various locations.
Yeni Şafak further explained, "If the member states of the OIC unite militarily, they will form the world's largest and most comprehensive army. The number of active soldiers would be at least 5,206,100, while the defense budget would reach approximately $175 billion."
This article provided additional details of the scandalous plan, stating that, "It is expected that 250,000 soldiers will participate in the first of a possible operation. Land, air and naval bases of member states located in the most critical regions will be used. Joint bases will be constructed in a short period of time. ... It is possible for 500 tanks and armored vehicles, 100 planes and 500 attack helicopters and 50 ships to mobilize quickly."

The American way of war — using overpowering industrial might, crushing firepower, and owning the sea and skies — may have come to an end, a top Pentagon official says.
For the past two decades, “the Chinese and the Russians have been working to undermine that model” Elbridge Colby, deputy assistant secretary of defense for strategy and force development said Wednesday. By spending billions on modernizing their militaries and fielding new technologies like A.I. and hypersonic missiles at a faster clip than the Americans, the two countries have changed the way the United States must approach future conflict.  
“I want to really stress that everything should be circled back to what the problem statement is, what the problem definition is, which is defeating the Chinese or Russian potential theories of victory,” Colby told an audience at the annual directed Energy Summit, co-sponsored by Booz Allen Hamilton and the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments. The answer, as much as there is one, will be found in a combination of technology, training, and doctrine, “but we should be taking initiative. They’ve gone after our theory of victory? We should go after their theory of victory so we have a better deterrent.”
One of the architects of the Pentagon’s National Defense Strategy, which underscored the view that Washington has entered an era of “long-term strategic competition” with Moscow and Beijing, Colby used his remarks to lay down a a series of challenges for defense industry types in the audience.

Should pregnancy care centers be forced to advertise abortions? California says yes. And soon we'll see what the Supreme Court has to say.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in what might be the most important religious freedom case of this term. Now you're probably thinking, "Wait--didn't the Court already hear arguments in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case?"
Yes, it did. But I'm talking about the other most important religious freedom case of this term: National Institute of Family and Life Advocates v. Becerra.
The case involves the California law that requires facilities licensed to provide ultrasounds and pregnancy tests to "disseminate a notice to all clients . . . stating, among other things, that California has public programs that provide immediate free or low-cost access to comprehensive family planning services, prenatal care, and abortion, for eligible women." 
In addition, "unlicensed covered facilities" must declare that they do not provide medical services.

In Middle-Earth, trees are living, thinking beings shepherded by benevolent and slow-spoken "Ents," who themselves are very tree-like. The chief of these, a gnarled fellow by the name of Treebeard, is constantly reminding his Hobbit friends not to be "hasty." After all, it takes a long time to say anything in Old Entish.
I thought of Treebeard and Tolkien when reading an essay last week in Smithsonian Magazine about--no kidding--talking trees.
Richard Grant writes about a small but vocal group of scientists who are challenging the naturalistic wisdom on our earth's largest living things.
For example, Peter Wohlleben a German forester and author, thinks the old, Darwinian picture of forests as clusters of disconnected individuals battling for sunlight and soil to survive is all wrong. His research suggests instead that trees are connected, in ways we never imagined, sharing water, nutrients, even messages. That's right. Wohlleben thinks trees can--in a sense--talk to each other.

Israel has admitted it was behind an airstrike that destroyed a Syrian nuclear reactor, ending a decade of silence over the attack in September 2007. 
Military censors lifted a 10-year order of secrecy on the mission, Reuters reported, revealing that Israeli F-15 and F-16 warplanes targeted the al-Kubar facility near the city of Deir Ezzor in the east of the country.
It said the reactor was “an emerging existential threat to Israel and the entire region.”
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) also released newly declassified video footage of the attack—known as Operation Orchard—as well as photographs and intelligence documents detailing the bombing and the planning of the mission, which used almost 20 tons of munitions.
Israel claimed that the reactor was being built with the help of North Korea and was only months away from activation. It kept the strikes a secret to avoid Syrian retaliation and possible escalation into a regional war.

After the murders of much of the staff at the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris on January 7, 2015, the hostage-taking and slaughter at a kosher supermarket two days later confirmed what was already obvious: France was a target of Islamic terrorism. 
A huge demonstration, organized in Paris on January 11, brought together a million and a half people, with politicians from around the world in attendance.
For a brief moment, France seemed to be the country where the multitudes were ready to stand up for freedom of speech, and the government was ready to fight for Western values.
Unfortunately, that impression did not last long.

As time goes by, the Palestinian leadership in Ramallah is getting more frustrated. The date of the planned transfer of the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on May 14, 2018 is drawing closer. 
This will be the day before Nakba, or "disaster," day, the anniversary of the declaration of the State of Israel's independence, which the Palestinians mark as the anniversary of their national disaster.
Of course, there will be no soul-searching on the Palestinian side with regard to how they came to this situation. It is more convenient for them to blame the West for their situation.

What are we to make of this?
Before we evaluate these announcements, it's important that we understand that we are not discussing the question of people who are intersex, referring to those who have a biological or chromosomal abnormality in terms of their sex. By very definition, people who are intersex are born that way.

Three lawyers appeared before the justices. One is Michael Farris, president of Alliance Defending Freedom, who represented pro-life crisis pregnancy centers that object to these requirements.
Some of the centers represented by Farris are licensed medical providers that perform pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, and other prenatal care, and the state of California is trying to force them to post signs with information about free abortions.

British cities would be uninhabitable within days and the country is only a few meals from anarchy if the National Grid was taken down in a cyber attack or solar storm, disaster and security experts have warned.
Modern life is so reliant on electricity that a prolonged blackout would quickly lead to a loss of water, fuel, banking, transport and communications that would leave the country "in the Stone Age".
The warning comes weeks after the Defence Secretary, Gavin Williamson, said Russia had been spying on the UK's energy infrastructure and could cause "thousands and thousands and thousands" of deaths if it crippled the power supply.

A recent article in The Atlantic about "The Tragedy of Mahmoud Abbas" noted: "In him, the world saw a reformist, a leader who could get the Palestinians to the table and possibly clear the hurdle of the two-state solution."
This was the mythical Abbas who never really existed. But this myth allowed the Palestinian Authority president to become the world's favorite Palestinian.
Only now, according to the same article, has the world woken up to the realization that Abas has "morphed into a bureaucratic tyrant at home, hostile to America and downright incendiary towards Israel."

There is a feeling of calm before the storm here in Israel. Everyone thinks war is unavoidable, and most people understand, at least on an intellectual level, that this war is going to be one of the toughest in Israel's history.
I'll say at the outset that I'm convinced that we will survive this one too, and even achieve a measure of victory. But the cost will be very high in soldiers, civilians and property, and the price we will have to exact from our enemies will be even higher.

My University Stripped A Campus Ministry Of Recognition, Until It Fought Back

My school, Wayne State University, doesn’t typically get much media attention. It’s the third largest university in Michigan, with over 27,000 students, yet it often gets overshadowed by the bigger universities in Michigan.
So I was surprised last week to see Wayne State make national headlines for reinstating a Christian student group on campus. The news was not well publicized on campus, and neither was the initial de-recognition of the group.
That’s understandable, though. The university was practicing blatant discrimination. Why would the administration want that publicized?
InterVarsity Christian Fellowship is one of the nation’s largest college ministries, with 1,015 chapters on 687 campuses. Its purpose is to “establish and advance at colleges and universities witnessing communities of student and faculty who follow Jesus as savior and Lord.”
Last fall, InterVarsity began its 75th year on Wayne State’s campus. It was then that the Dean of Students Office decided to de-recognize the ministry. Why? Simply because InterVarsity requires its leaders to affirm the Christian faith.
Last week, InterVarsity filed a lawsuit against the university. It was represented by Becket Law. Just two days later, Wayne State announced it would reverse its decision and continue recognizing InterVarsity as an official student organization.
That was encouraging news, but the whole ordeal is still deeply troubling.:

Gallup Poll Finds Highest US Support For Israel Since 1990's

A Gallup poll released on Tuesday found a surge in American support for Israel that hasn't been seen since the early 1990s.
According to the poll, some 74 percent of Americans view Israel favorably: 83 percent of Republicans and 64 percent of Democrats.
"As the Trump administration prepares to move the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and is reportedly finalizing its broader Middle East peace plan, Americans' stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is as strongly pro-Israel as at any time in Gallup's three-decade trend," wrote senior Gallup editor Lydia Saad.
However, a favorable view of the Palestinian Authority was recorded among 27 percent of Democrats, with only 12 percent of Republicans expressing a favorable view and 21 percent of Independents.

Researchers at Israel's Ben-Gurion University have revealed that off-the-shelf smart devices like baby monitors, air conditioners, robot floor cleaners, cameras and doorbells can be corrupted by malware and used to spy on users.
In a paper appearing in Smart Card Research and Advanced Applications, Yossi Oren of Ben-Gurion University's software and information systems engineering department revealed that almost any nonstandard computing device that can connect to a wireless network can be used to transmit data.
The senior lecturer noted that many web-connected devices "lack even basic security protections such as secure password authentication," and that thousands of "Internet of Things" devices are infected with malware, with many more left vulnerable.

The PA minister of Education is worried, he says, about a "crime" that is about to be committed against Arab children in Jerusalem schools. The "crime," in his view, is that the children will be taught according to an Israeli, and not a Palestinian, curriculum.
Saidam sees the decision to apply the Israeli curriculum to Arab schools in Jerusalem as an "ugly crime of counterfeit." These are the exact words he used to denounce the decision to introduce the Israeli curriculum into Arab schools.

Although Europe is not part of the Muslim world, many European authorities nevertheless seem to feel obliged to submit to Islam in more or less subtle ways. 
This voluntary submission appears to be unprecedented: Dhimmi, historically speaking, is the Arabic term for the conquered non-Muslim, who agrees to live as a second-rate, "tolerated" citizen, under Islamic rule, submitting to a separate, demeaning set of laws and the demands of his Islamic masters.
In Europe, submitting to the demands of Islam, in the name of "diversity" and "human rights", has also been happening voluntarily. This submission to Islam is, of course, highly ironic, as the Western concepts of "diversity" and "human rights" do not exist within the foundational texts of Islam.

It was a bland, bureaucratic statement—but its implications could be profound. In late February, China’s Communist Party announced a proposal to abolish term limits for its highest office. The party hasn’t made a final decision, but the news seemed to confirm what many have long suspected: Xi Jinping, the country’s leader, wants to be president for life.
The announcement wasn’t surprising, but many didn’t expect it to come so soon. Aside from being president, Xi is also the general secretary of the Communist Party and commander in chief of the country’s armed forces. The term limits on his presidency effectively constrain his ability to hold the other two jobs. Since Xi took office in March 2013, he’s been consumed with his fight against corruption. This battle is basically a proxy for him and his allies to consolidate control over the highest levels of the party, as well as big state-owned companies. In Chinese politics, personal rivalries and differing agendas are rarely visible to the outside world. So many had assumed Xi’s fight was still ongoing, given how deeply entrenched corruption is in China.

It all happened around the same time, 200 kilometers apart. In one photo, Israeli schools were involved in a national drill in the event of a missile attack. In the other photo, a real missile attack in Syria caused 200 deaths, many of which were of children. 
On one side, you have Israel, a democracy forced to protect its children. On the other side, you have Syria, a brutal dictatorship where the civil war has caused more than 400,000 deaths.
Last month, an Israeli plane was shot down by Syrian anti-aircraft fire. If the Syrian regime, backed by Iran and Russia, is willing to kill 200 innocent Syrians, just think what they would do to other countries' citizens, if they had the means. Yet, going by media reports of the incident, one would think that Israel had been the aggressor.
How many resolutions has the United Nations dedicated against Syria the last year? Two. How many resolutions against Israel? 21. Both accurate reporting and international law have become distorted into serving as the enemies of humanity and civilization.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia is developing a new generation of advanced nuclear weapons including a hypersonic intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that can reach almost anywhere in the world and cannot be shot down by anti-missile systems.
Putin made the claim during his annual presidential address to the Federal Assembly in Moscow. He officially unveiled a new hypersonic nuclear-capable ICBM called the RS-28 Sarmat and said it would be able to strike anywhere in the U.S.—adding that testing of the weapon is now complete. NATO calls the nuke “Satan 2”.
A video was played during the speech showing off the weapon’s alleged capabilities, reported RT, Russian state media. Putin said other countries only listen to Russia when it creates new weapons systems, reported Sputnik, another of Russia’s state organs. “You will listen to us now,” he added.
There have been media reports about the RS-28’s development since 2014. But Putin’s speech claims testing of the weapon is finished—and he said it is already deployed in the south of Russia, Sputnik reported.
Claims made in the Russian media about the RS-28’s capability state that it carries a payload powerful enough to destroy an area the size of Texas and has a propulsion system so advanced that it can defy existing missile defense systems.
Putin’s nuclear grandstanding comes at a time when he is pushing to expand Russia’s sphere of influence, especially in the Middle East. After the U.S. and its allies including Britain decided not to fully enter the conflict in Syria back in 2013, after the Assad regime was accused of using chemical weapons on his own people, Russia stepped in to support the Syrian government militarily and financially as it attempted to regain control of the country.

After years of bloody warfare, Syria has become a "Shi'a colony of Iran," a Syrian professor who lives in Germany told an Israeli conference in recent days.
Addressing the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies at Bar-Ilan University, Bassam Tibi, professor emeritus of international relations at Georg-August University of Gottingen, said: "They have killed our clans. They have killed our family. The Alawites of the Assad regime have killed our Sunni identity of Damascus."
Tibi, a secular Sunni scholar born in Damascus, said the Syrian conflict has been transformed into a sectarian-religious war, adding that this core fact has been missed by many Western observers.
Since the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, Iran has been filling the vacuum "created by the removal of [former Iraqi leader] Saddam Hussein. Ever since, Iran has been expanding its power," explained Tibi.

After reading with horror the case of the California couple accused of torture and child endangerment, I knew it would only be a matter of time.
Attention would soon turn away from the atrocities David and Louise Turpin allegedly committed against their own children. It would turn toward blanket policies that restrict innocent people in an attempt to legislate away evil.
In this case, the focus is on homeschooling, because the Turpins were homeschooling six of their thirteen children, ages 2 to 29.
A California bill proposed on Feb. 16 by Assemblyman Jose Medina (D-Riverside) would require city and county fire departments to conduct annual inspections of all registered homeschools in their areas.
Hawaii State Senate Bill 2323, which would have run background checks on homeschooling parents, was withdrawn by Senator Kai Kahele after extreme opposition.
In New Hampshire, House Bill 1263 would require parents to report their homeschool child's annual evaluation to an education official. According to the Concord Monitor, the official would determine if the child has made adequate progress. If not, parents would have one year to "fix the problem" or risk having a hearing to end the homeschool program.

Chanced upon meters from the discovery of a seal identified with King Hezekiah, the minuscule clay piece bearing Isaiah's name is thought to have been made by the prophet himself
The hand of the Prophet Isaiah himself may have created an 8th-century BCE seal impression discovered in First Temple remains near Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, according to Hebrew University archaeologist Dr. Eilat Mazar.
“We appear to have discovered a seal impression, which may have belonged to the prophet Isaiah, in a scientific, archaeological excavation,” said Mazar this week in a press release announcing the breathtaking discovery.
Mazar’s team uncovered the minuscule bulla, or seal impression, during renewed excavations at the Ophel, located at the foot of the southern wall of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The discovery was published on Wednesday in an article, “ Is This the Prophet Isaiah’s Signature?” as part of a massive March-June issue of the Biblical Archaeology Review dedicated to its recently retired founding editor, Hershel Shanks.
The clay impression is inscribed with letters and what appears to be a grazing doe, “a motif of blessing and protection found in Judah, particularly in Jerusalem,” according to the BAR article.
The oval-shaped bulla, however, is not intact. On its legible portion, there is an inscription with First Temple Hebrew letters that seem to spell out the name l’Yesha’yah[u] (Belonging to Isaiah). On a line below, there is the partial word nvy, which presumably spells out “prophet.”

The Bishop anointed the transgender pastor with water from the baptismal fountain during the ceremony. A public statement on the church's website reads, "Today, we are creating a sacred space that allows our pastor to live more fully into who God is calling him [her] to be. We take a bold step in witnessing to the inclusiveness of God's love for those within our church and society. Bless Peter with grace as he [she] takes this new name!".

Are the Palestinians finally catching on to the rules of Western public relations? For decades, the face of their cause was Yasser Arafat, a blood-soaked terrorist who didn't even try to pretend to be an advocate for peace, even when signing the Oslo Accords back in the 1990s.

Parents who don't believe that their teenage children should undergo radical gender reassignment procedures are now at risk of having their children taken away and their parental rights stripped from them. If this sounds too outlandish to be true, it has already happened in Ohio. 
In February, Hamilton Country Job and Family Services took legal custody of a 17-year-old girl who suffers from gender dysphoria after her parents refused to allow her to transition to being a man. The names of the girl and her parents are currently sealed because she is a minor, but it was revealed that she is currently living with her maternal grandparents, who support transgenderism.

In Iran, my generation, the first after Islamism came to power, is called the Burnt Generation (Persian: Nasl-e Sukhteh). Our generation earned this name for having to endure the brutality of the Islamist and theocratic regime from the time we were born, to adulthood. 
This brutality included the regime's merciless efforts, such as mass executions, to establish its power, impose its barbaric and restrictive rules, and brainwash children and indoctrinate the younger generation with its extremist ideology through various methods including elementary schools, universities, state-controlled media outlets, imams and local mosques, and promoting chants such as "Death to America" and "Death to Israel".
Women and men were segregated. Teenagers were prevented from performing daily activities considered harmless by most of the world. Any kind of enjoyable social activities were barred, including listening to music, dancing, drinking, dating, women participating in a chess championship unless you were wearing a hijab or attending a football match or other sporting event if men were playing in it.

Senior Iranian and Turkish officials have explicitly threatened to overwhelm Europe with new waves of Middle Eastern refugees if their demands aren't met. To these Islamist republics, Muslim refugees are weapons of jihad, not victims.
Iranian officials are also implying that they will build nuclear weapons or at least approach nuclear "break-out" capability as quickly as possible if the nuclear deal ends.
As reported by Abdullah Bozkurt, president of the Stockholm Center for Freedom and author of Turkey Interrupted, the Turkish Interior Minister has threatened to escalate the refugee crisis to the point where German Chancellor Angela Merkel is forced out of power.

A series of recent news stories have highlighted the massive advances made in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Several of those focus on China's Yitu Technologies, a company at the forefront of AI development. Yitu created a technology called Dragonfly. 
Dragonfly can search and analyze billions of photographs and locate a single person in a matter of seconds. Connected to cameras in the Shanghai Metro, it identified over 500 criminals in a three month period. It's so powerful it can recognize people wearing disguises. And it can identify people using pictures that are more than 30 years old.
Think of the power this gives the Chinese government. As Dragonfly connects to every camera in the nation, criminals will have nowhere to hide. Unfortunately, no one else will either. Chinese dissidents, political activists, ethnic minorities, Christians, and other "enemies of the state" will also have nowhere to hide. And it's quite unlikely China will be the only state to take advantage of this technology.

In recent weeks, President Donald Trump has repeatedly indicated that he intends to pressure Israel to make yet more concessions to the Palestinian Authority. I wonder why pro-Israel voices have not been expressing concern about this development.
I admit that his rhetorical swipes at the P.A. have been a welcome change from the "see no evil" policy of his predecessor. U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley's speeches at the United Nations have also been terrific. 
And the administration's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital was gratifying, although it's still puzzling why it should to take two or more years to set up an American embassy in Jerusalem when the building already exists.

Catholic LGTB supporters and numerous left leaning protestant churches throughout the United States and Canada intend to show their support for inclusion of the LBTB community by wearing "glitter ash" on their foreheads to mark Ash Wednesday.  
Last year more than 200 churches and faith groups participated with more expected to join this year.
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, a period that extends until Easter Sunday where Catholics and some Protestants ceremoniously place plain gray ashes on their foreheads, often in the formation of a cross, to spread a message of repentance and change which often involve fasting, moderation and self-denial.

Last Saturday’s flare-up following the downing of an Iranian drone over Israeli territory brings Russia’s regional predicament into full view.
Moscow’s planes and air defenses did not take part in the fighting. Can Russian President Vladimir Putin remain neutral should another Iranian provocation lead to an additional, perhaps stronger Israeli response? Had Russia taken into consideration the long-range implications of its intervention in Syria?

Gaza is broke. As Monday's front-page New York Times feature explained at length, the conflict between the Gaza Strip's Hamas overlords and the Fatah party that runs the West Bank has resulted in a cash crunch that has left many of the compact area's 2 million people without money. 
Along with Gaza's inadequate infrastructure, the resulting poverty from this crisis contributes to a general picture of despair for many Palestinians.
Of course, the notion that everyone in Gaza is starving is an exaggeration. As journalist Tom Gross points out, Gaza's thriving malls continue to operate, as does its water park, restaurants and hotels, inconvenient facts that are missing from the Times story and most of the coverage of the current crisis.

Religious liberty faces a new threat, this time from anti-conversion laws. Simply talking to someone about your faith is seen to be worthy of lengthy prison terms in several countries both in Asia and South America.
Now awaiting approval by President Evo Morales, Bolivia's new penal code contains an article 88.1 that criminalizes, with the same stroke of the pen, both recruitment for armed conflicts and religious organizations. 
The text of the law reads, "Whoever recruits, transports, deprives of freedom or hosts people with the aim of recruiting them to take part in armed conflicts or religious or worship organizations will be penalized with 7 to 12 years of imprisonment."

Three economic examples come to mind:
1. Near-zero interest rates. If someone had announced to a room of economists and financial journalists in 2006 that interest rates would be near-zero for the foreseeable future, few would have considered it possible or healthy. The fight over same-sex "marriage" already seems like a distant memory. But the way it was fought is the mother of all worldview lessons.
According to recent surveys, Americans--especially younger generations--are more supportive of gay "marriage" than ever before. One Gallup poll revealed that a strong majority--64 percent--approve of the rights invented and bestowed on same-sex couples by the Supreme Court in the Obergefell decision.
And the Barna Group recently reported that teenagers today are at least twice as likely as American adults to identify as LGBT.
