New York Times Gets Hysterical Over Netanyahu

NOVEMBER 12, 2013 14:25
BY SIMON PLOSKER
NYT-magGlass-01It must be easy for the editorial board of the New York Times viewing the world from the New York Times Building in Manhattan. The view from Jerusalem is quite different, especially when considering the prospect of an Iranian nuclear bomb.

In a staff editorial on Iran, the NY Times gives the paper’s official view,  hauling anyone over the coals who might stand in the way of a deal with the Iranians as if reaching a deal is more important than the contents of that deal. And the NY Times reserves special opprobrium for Israel’s prime minister:

Unfortunately, the inconclusive negotiations have given an opening to the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, who excoriated the proposed agreement as the “deal of the century” for Iran before it is made public, to generate more hysterical opposition.

Netanyahu has pointedly not opposed negotiations with Iran. But he is entitled to express his legitimate concern and to oppose any deal that may leave the threat of a nuclear Iran hanging over Israel like a proverbial sword of Damocles.

But why does the NY Times believe that Netanyahu is responsible for generating “hysterical opposition?” The term would imply some sort of irrational behavior and perhaps is indicative of the NY Times’ general disdain for the Israeli prime minister.

Even Time Magazine, also not known for its favorable treatment of Netanyahu, acknowledges “even if Netanyahu has worn out his welcome, some of the West’s leading experts on nuclear proliferation are making much the same case,” before quoting Olli Heinonen, a former deputy director of the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency, now at Harvard, and David Albright, an American former IAEA inspector, who runs the Institute for Science and International Security, the Washington think tank that does the most-quoted independent research on Iran’s nuclear program.

Does the NY Times also believe that two former IAEA inspectors are also “hysterical?” Or is the only hysteria on show the NY Times’ apparent desperation see an Iranian deal signed at almost any cost?

This latest shot at Netanyahu is part of an identifiable trend on the part of the NY Times, which, as Israeli commentator Avi Issacharoff wrote“seems to be directing a campaign against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,” whileDror Eydar points out that “The Times has a long history of supporting even the faintest of hopes when it comes to reconciliation with ruthless dictators.”

Israeli Organization To Send Aid Team To Typhoon-Devastated Philippines
Posted by: Staff Writer  November 10, 2013 , 11:04 am

"Withhold not good from him to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thy hand to do it. (Proverbs 3:27)

The Israeli charity organization IsraAID plans to send a team to the Philippines later this week to help treat the thousands of victims affected by destructive Typhoon Haiyan, according to The Times of Israel. The IsraAID organizations is supported by the American Jewish Committee and North American Jewish Communities.
The team will be comprised of medical, trauma and relief professionals. The team will work primarily in Tacloban City in Leyte, according to a statement released by IsraAID Saturday.
Rescuers have thus far estimated a death toll north of 1,000 people. With communications and roads still cut off, Capt. John Andrews, deputy director general of the Civil Aviation Authority, said he had received “reliable information” by radio from his staff that more than 100 bodies were lying in the streets of the city of Tacloban on hardest-hit Leyte Island. It was one of six islands that Typhoon Haiyan slammed into Friday.
Aid from the Jewish State for disaster relief is far from rare. Teams have been dispatched everywhere in the world including America following Hurricane Sandy, Kenya in the recent mall hostage stand-off and even neighboring enemy state Syria, treating victims of their bloody civil war.

"This is thy lot, the portion measured unto thee from Me, saith the LORD; because thou hast forgotten Me, and trusted in falsehood. (Jeremiah 13:25)

Israeli MK Orit Struck (left) is the latest politician to slam John Kerry over his threatening of Israel with a third intifada if it does not give in to the PA’s requests. (Photo: Yonatan Sindel/Flash90)
Israeli Knesset Member Orit Struck of Bayit Hayehudi (Jewish Home) hammered US Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday for not being a fair negotiator, according to the Jerusalem Post. Struck is the latest in a growing number of Israeli lawmakers from the new right-wing party to compose letters of discontent to Kerry.
Struck’s letter came after Channel 2 News interviewed Kerry Thursday, and the lawmaker summarized his comments as “threatening Israel with a third Intifada if it refuses to capitulate to [his] demands and those of the Palestinians and remove its soldiers from the areas of Judea and Samaria.”
What Kerry told Channel 2′s Udi Segal is: “The alternative to getting back to the talks is the potential of chaos. Does Israel want a third intifada?”

The Bayit Yehudi MK thanked Kerry in her letter, saying his words “finally and most strikingly revealed the extent to which you cannot serve as an honest broker.”
“Whose side are you on, Mr. Secretary? On the side of terrorists who are waging an Intifada against women and children? Or on the side of the soldiers who are saving human lives?” she asked.
According to Struck, “the Intifada is already here.” She recounted her bus ride from Jerusalem to her home in Hebron on Monday, during which the bus was ambushed by Palestinian terrorists throwing Molotov cocktails.
“This serious incident is not an isolated one, but rather one in a series of many similar events that have been occurring in recent weeks on a daily basis throughout Judea and Samaria, especially in wake of the release of terrorists carried out as part of the agreement you brokered,” Struck wrote.
Struck also explained that it would be irresponsible to remove the IDF from the West Bank, because the Second Intifada was only curbed by Operation Defensive Shield, in which soldiers were returned to the area.

In addition, Struck pointed out that the area Kerry refers to as a future Palestinian state is “Israel’s historic homeland,” which includes Hebron, her residence and “the city of Abraham and King David and the Cave of the Patriarchs [that] was purchased by the father of our nation for his descendants after him. Beit El, Shiloh and Efrat are all noted in the Bible as Jewish towns, and when we returned to them after 2,000 years of exile, we were returning home.”
She added that Jews lived in these places centuries before the advent of Christianity and over a millennium before the birth of Islam.
Finally, Struck wrote, “we are not frightened by your threats…Your threats will not have the outcome that you intend, but they have already proved very effective in revealing exactly how unsuited you are to serve as an honest broker.”
Earlier this year, Bayit Yehudi faction chairwoman Ayelet Shaked wrote a letter to Kerry calling his pressure on Israel to release Palestinian prisoners hypocritical.
The party’s MKs continued criticizing the US Secretary of State since then, with Shaked writing on Friday that Kerry’s “equation that a lack of a treaty with the Palestinians equals a third Intifada and international isolation of Israel” is baseless.
MK Motti Yogev (Bayit Yehudi) said “Kerry’s threats to the people and State of Israel crossed every line and expressed almost the exact stance of the Palestinian Authority as his own.”
“John Kerry, go home,” Yogev concluded.

There is a "bad deal" on the table that would ease sanctions on Iran without requiring the dismantling of Iran's nuclear weapons program.

Now is the time to prevent a nuclear 9/11. Watch Israeli Minister Bennett explain why the next few days are so critical. Not only for the future of Israel, but for the future of the entire western world.

Kerry Says US Sees Judea and Samaria Settlements as ‘Illegitimate’
Posted by: Doni Kandel  November 7, 2013 , 2:21 pm

"Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which the LORD swore unto your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.’ (Deuteronomy 1:8)

After meeting with Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday, John Kerry told the pressthat the United States sees Israeli settlements as “illegitimate”. (Photo: Issam Rimawi/Flash90)
Following a meeting with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, US Secretary of State John Kerry told the media that the United States views Israeli settlements as ‘illegitimate’ on Wednesday, according to the Jerusalem Post.Kerry called on Israel to limit construction so that the peace negotiations can continue.
“Let me emphasize at this point the position of the United States of America on the settlements is that we consider them… to be illegitimate,” Kerry said after discussions with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The PA has said they are contemplating pulling out of the negotiations after Israel announced it had approved roughly 3,5000 new homes in east Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria in conjunction with the release of 26 Palestinian murderers.
Kerry made the comments in responding to Palestinian frustration over Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank and stressed that “at no time” did the Palestinians agree to accept the settlements as a part of a negotiated peace accord.

Kerry, faced with grim Israeli and Palestinian assessments of progress inpeace talks, said on Wednesday that Washington was not giving up on a deal.
“As in any negotiation there will be moments of up and moments of down, and it goes back and forth,” Kerry said in Bethlehem, in the West Bank, where he met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
“But I can tell you that President Obama and I are determined, and neither of us will stop in our efforts to pursue the possibility (of peace),” he said.
Abbas, in a speech broadcast on Monday, said that after all the rounds of negotiations “there is nothing on the ground”.

Kerry Attempts To Pressure Israel With Intifada Threat
Posted by: Doni Kandel  November 8, 2013 , 10:52 am

"Be strong and of good courage, fear not, nor be affrighted at them; for the LORD thy God, He it is that doth go with thee; He will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.’ (Deuteronomy 31:6)

John Kerry
US Secretary of State John Kerry warned Israel on Thursday that failing to reach a deal with the PA could result in a third intifada. (Photo: Yonatan Sindel/Flash90)
In a rare joint interview with both Israeli and Palestinian television on Thursday,US Secretary of State John Kerry continued to beat the drums of fear for Israel warning that failure to reach a peace negotiation would result in a third intifada and international isolation, according to the Jerusalem Post.
“The alternative to getting back to the talks is the potential of chaos,” Kerry said. “Does Israel want a third intifada?”

Kerry’s word may have been nothing more but bluster however, following a poll released on Tuesday conducted by the Arab World For Research & Development showed that only 29% of Judea, Samaria and Gaza Palestinians said they would support a third intifada, though 60% believe one is possible.

Kerry was only scheduled to be in Israel until Wednesday but extended his trip an extra day after finding the peace talks in disrepair.
“I believe that if we do not resolve the issues between Palestinians and Israelis, if we do not find a way to find peace, there will be an increasing isolation of Israel, three will be an increasing campaign of the delegitimization of Israel that has been taking place on an international basis,” he said in the interview.

“If we do not resolve the question of settlements, and who lives where and what rights they have; if we don’t end the presence of Israeli soldiers perpetually in the West Bank, then there will be an increasing feeling that if you cannot get peace with a leadership that is committed to non-violence, we may wind up with a leadership that is committed to violence,” he added.

In a press conference alongside Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh in Amman on Thursday, Kerry reiterated this theme. “What is the alternative to peace?” he asked. ” Prolonged continued conflict. The absence of peace really means you have a sort of low-grade conflict, war.”
He said that “as long as the aspirations of people are held down one way or another” and as long as the conflict continued without a solution, the “possibilities of violence” increase.

Israel Daily News Stream 11/06/2013
NOVEMBER 6, 2013 15:45
BY PESACH BENSON
Everything you need to know about today’s coverage of Israel and the Mideast. Join the Israel Daily News Stream on Facebook.

Today’s Top Stories
1. The you-know-what is hitting the fan as the Jerusalem municipality issued demolition orders for some Palestinian apartments in Ras Hamis. I already blogged this week that there’s much more to the story than meets the eye, but the Palestinian narrative is so much easier to crank out when you’re on deadline for The Independent.

2. Former foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman was acquitted of all charges of fraud and breach of trust. The verdict clears the way for the Yisrael Beiteinu party chief to return to the foreign ministry, but Ben Caspit cautions that won’t be so simple. Haaretz assesses what this means for the foreign ministry and Israeli diplomacy. See also the Times of Israel.

3. European scientists examining the cause of Yasser Arafat’s death gave their findings to the Palestinian Authority. AP reports that the PA will study the report before releasing it to the public, so don’t hold your breath waiting for confirmation of Israeli innocence or iniquity. If there was a smoking gun, you can be sure the PA would’ve been shouting already.

Rest O’ the Roundup
• According to AFP,  Israeli and Palestinian negotiators had a stormy meeting, with the Palestinians refusing to talk while Israel moves ahead with eastern Jerusalem construction. See also the Daily Telegraph on the Israeli-Palestinian gaps and the BBC on the importance of the Jordan Valley.

• The Palestinians fear a US-imposed solution to the Mideast conflict, which is why the PA is trying internationalize the conflict by discrediting the US and drawing the UN, EU and Russia into the talks, writes Khaled Abu Toameh.

• An Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander killed in Syria was buried with full honors. Aw shucks, Brig Gen Mohammad Jamali-Paqaleh was only doing his duty protecting a Shiite shrine propping up Bashar Assad.

• Riccardo Dugulin argues that long-term Iranian nuclear negotiations will give the West an excuse to avoid action.

• Foreign Ministry officials decided not to send an envoy to Ankara unless Turkey takes reciprocal steps. The Jerusalem Post says this was in response to a Turkish media report that Israel had already decided to appoint Rafi Schutz as its next ambassador. Today’s Zaman lays out the political chess match of normalizing ties from Turkey’s perspective:

Analysts believe that Israel is trying to corner Turkey by announcing a name to be appointed to Ankara — a move that aims to present Turkey as the party which has no will to normalize relations.

• Worth reading: Open Letter to Hamas Spokeswoman

spooks• Why don’t Israelis think the NSA scandal is a big deal — even though the US spied on them too? Shmuel Rosner nails it:

According to a Pew Research Center survey from 2011, “just one-half of one percent of American adults” served on active duty at any given time over the previous decade, even though it was a period of sustained war for the United States. By contrast, a vast majority of Israelis serve in the military at some point. As many as one in five personally witnessed a terrorist attack. And according to the Israel Defense Forces, in 2012 more than one million Israelis were living under the threat of rocket attacks from Gaza.

Israelis cannot afford to not worry about their safety, and so they look at the indignation of Americans and, say, Germans over Washington’s spying on Chancellor Angela Merkel as hypocrisy or naiveté. They’re thinking: Keep on spying, America, because as long as you do we know you’re still helping police the world.

Latest Round of Peace Talks Ends In Shouting Match
Posted by: Doni Kandel  November 6, 2013 , 3:41 pm

"They compassed me about also with words of hatred, and fought against me without a cause.(Psalms 109:3)

Ahead of John Kerry’s vist to the region, the latest round of peace talks between Israel and the PA ended in a shouting match and finger pointing. (Photo: Miriam Alster/Flash90)
The sixteenth round of peace talks between the Palestinian Authority and Israel ended in a screaming match between the two sides, according to The Times of Israel.
The Palestinian Authority will not continue with peace talks as long as Israel continues building in the settlements, an unidentified Palestinian official said Wednesday. “The Israeli side is determined to continue its settlement and we cannot continue negotiations under these unprecedented settlement attacks,” the official told French news agency AFP after a contentious meeting between the two sides.
Palestinian Authority negotiators were reportedly furious over what they called Israeli “lies” to the public about an agreement with the Palestinians to continue building in the settlements in exchange for the release of 104 Palestinian prisoners jailed since before the Oslo accords, an official told Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth. The Israeli side took offense and the meeting broke down.
Israel had announced last week that they approved the building of thousands of units in East Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria. Israel had said they had cleared this action with Washington and the PA beforehand.

This latest stall in the talks comes as US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Israel Tuesday night. He was set to meet both sides Wednesday.
On Monday, PA President Mamoud Abbas said that despite all the meetings, “there hasn’t been any advancement in the talks with the Israelis.”
“The Israelis justify the expansion of settlements by releasing prisoners,” Abbas said. “They link the two issues, [and it] is likely to bring about the termination of the talks, without results.”

Israeli Invention May Prevent Doctor’s Visits
Posted by: Ahuva Balofsky  November 6, 2013 , 3:25 pm
“Behold, I will bring it healing and cure, and I will cure them; and I will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth.” (Jeremiah 33:6)
The Israeli-born Tyto application will allow users to administer home check-ups and then send the results to a physician. (Photo: YouTube/Screen Shot)

A new Israeli invention may help users avoid visits to the doctor by helping them perform home check-ups and sending the data to the doctor remotely. Tyto is being marketed as “an innovative handheld device enabling anyone, anywhere to perform an accurate physical examination for remote diagnosis.”
The device is named after a genus of owl which is small and mobile, with excellent sight and hearing.  The handheld device is designed with the same features.  By pointing the Tyto at various parts of the body, it can measure temperature, check heart rates, inspect skin and other organs, and evaluate the physical changes and abnormalities which could indicate illness.  The information gathered can then be sent via the internet to a physician.  Although nothing is as accurate as a complete physical examination, product developers believe the information provided by the Tyto can serve to reduce such exams by half.

CEO Dedi Gilad told Ynet how this device differs from its predecessors — smartphone apps designed to do similar tasks.  ”[Tyto] knows how the eardrum looks, how the heart and lungs sound and in what pressure it should be placed against the body, so it helps the user do the examination in an optimal way.”  The quality of the samples recorded, as well, is unsurpassed.

According to the company website, Tyto benefits patients, doctors and health organizations alike by reducing wait times, overhead costs for clinics and unnecessary visits.  The exam can be guided remotely by the physician or conducted entirely by the patient, following the instructions provided by Tyto itself.  The information is transmitted securely and can be stored for future reference.

Tyto is expected to hit the markets next year, at approximately $200.  So far, it has been tested in a children’s hospital in Spain and is due for another round of testing at another children’s hospital, this time in Boston.  In Spain it was deemed highly precise — nearly as good as a traditional physical exam.

Israeli-American Lobby Refuses to Support Pause In Iranian Sanctions Requests
Posted by: Staff Writer  November 4, 2013 , 11:33 am
"If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small indeed. (Proverbs 24:10)

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee has stated that they will not support the Obama Administration’s request to put lobbying for Iranian sanctions on hold. (Photo: Amos Ben Gershom/GPO/Flash90)
The American Israel Public Affairs Committee said there would be “no pause, delay or moratorium in our efforts” to seek new sanctions on Iran, according to the Jerusalem Post.
AIPAC made the statement days after reports had come out claiming a number of pro-Israel groups had agreed to a meeting with a White House official to discuss adopting an 80 day moratorium on lobbying for Iranian sanctions.
“AIPAC continues to support congressional action to adopt legislation to further strengthen sanctions and there will absolutely be no pause, delay or moratorium in our efforts,” said the statement by AIPAC President Michael Kassen.
Obama administration officials have said that passing intensified sanctions would be counterproductive while renewed negotiations are underway with Iran aimed at making its nuclear program more transparent and ensuring that Iran is not working to make a bomb.
Congressional proponents of the sanctions, as well as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have said that sanctions forced Iran to the negotiating table and should be upheld to extract meaningful concessions.
That outlook was echoed in the statement by AIPAC’s Kassen.
“AIPAC supports diplomatic efforts to achieve an end to Iran’s nuclear program,” Kassen said.
“Diplomatic talks have been made possible because of the strong sanctions passed by Congress and implemented by the administration,” he said. “Until Iran suspends its enrichment program, additional sanctions are vital for diplomacy to succeed.

Israel Furious With White House for Syria Strike Leak
Posted by: Doni Kandel  November 4, 2013 , 11:42 am
He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets; but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth a matter. (Proverbs 11:13)
Syria Leak

Israeli officials are enraged with the White House for confirming a report that the Israeli Air Force had been responsible for a strike on a military base in Syria on Wednesday, according to The Times of Israel.
While Israel had remained silent following accusations that they had carried out the attack which hit weaponry headed for Hezbollah, an Obama administration official told CNN on Thursday that Israeli warplanes had indeed attacked the Syrian base, and that the target was “missiles and related equipment” set for delivery to Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Israel’s Channel 10 TV on Friday night quoted Israeli officials branding the American leak as “scandalous.” For Israel’s ally to be acting in this way was “unthinkable,” the officials were quoted as saying.
LIBI-Defenders-600WIDE
A second TV report, on Israel’s Channel 2, said the leak “came directly from the White House,” and noted that “this is not the first time” that the administration has compromised Israel by leaking information on such Israeli Air Force raids on Syrian targets.
It said some previous leaks were believed to have come from the Pentagon, and that consideration had been given at one point to establishing a panel to investigate the sources.
Channel 2′s military analyst, Roni Daniel, said the Obama administration’s behavior in leaking the information was unfathomable.
Daniel noted that by keeping silent on whether it carried out such attacks, Israel was maintaining plausible deniability, so that Syria’s President Bashar Assaddid not feel pressured to respond to the attacks.
But the US leaks “are pushing Assad closer to the point where he can’t swallow these attacks, and will respond.” This in turn would inevitably draw further Israeli action, Daniel posited, and added bitterly: “Then perhaps the US will clap its hands because it will have started a very major flare-up.”

Israel Working On Deal To Discover Fate Of Long Lost IAF Pilot
Posted by: Doni Kandel  October 31, 2013 , 12:00 pm

"And Joseph said unto his brethren: ‘I am Joseph; doth my father yet live?’ And his brethren could not answer him; for they were affrighted at his presence. (Genesis 45:3)

Israel is reportedly working on a deal that would provide them on information on the fate of IAF soldier Ron Arad, who was taken prisoner 26 years ago. (Photo: Channel 10 via Flash 90)
According to the Jerusalem Post, a Kuwaiti newspaper on Wednesday reported that Israel is currently working on a deal in which they would receive new information on the fate of Israeli Air Force soldier and prisoner of war Ron Arad in exchange for Iran receiving information on four Iranian diplomats who went missing near Beirut during Lebanon’s civil war in 1982. Arad was captured on an IAF mission on October 16, 1986 when he and his pilot were forced to evacuate their plane due to technical failure on a mission over Lebanon. The pilot, Yishai Aviram, was found and rescued by the IAF while Arad was taken prisoner.
During his imprisonment, three letters and one picture were sent to Israel. However, no contact has been made since 1987, when the Red Cross was last given access to Arad.
According to the report in Al-Siyasa, which quotes Western intelligence sources, the respective sides will be informed in the coming weeks whether Arad and the four Iranians are still alive, or conversely, where they are buried. The recent talks between Iran and the US has opened the way to a possible deal, according to the sources. The report has not been confirmed by other sources.
Al-Siyasa reported that the deal became possible due to new information on Arad given to Western intelligence officials by Hussein Musawi, the brother of one of the four missing Iranian diplomats.
A former Iranian Foreign Ministry official, Musawi is believed to be one of the few people who know the fate of Arad.
In an intriguing twist, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said in a speech on Monday that the group had to deal with the missing persons, including the four Iranian diplomats.
“There are 17,000 missing persons due to the Israeli occupation, including the four Iranian diplomats along with other people during the Lebanese war,” he said..

Skirmishes Break Out After Palestinians Attack Israel Soldiers In Jenine
Posted by: Staff Writer  October 31, 2013 , 11:51 am
"nd that bringeth me forth from mine enemies; yea, Thou liftest me up above them that rise up against me; Thou deliverest me from the violent man. (2 Samuel 22:49)

An IDF team that had entered the city of Jenine was met with a mob of stone-throwing Palestinians on Thursday, resulting in the death of one rioter, according to The Times of Israel. Four Hamas members were apprehended in the IDF raid.
An IDF spokesperson said a clash broke out in the village after some 50 Palestinians threw stones at IDF troops, who responded with anti-riot measures. She added that troops fired into the air after feeling their life was in danger and said the army said it was checking into the report that a person was killed. There were no injuries on the Israel side, the army said.
A report in the Ma’an news agency said Ahmed Tazata, 20, was killed during a confrontation with Israel Defense Forces troops at the entrance to the village of Qabatiya, south of Jenin in the northern Judea and Samaria.
Palestinian medics said the man was shot in the chest and died of his wounds, according to Ynet news.
On Tuesday, clashes between Palestinians and troops were reported in two other villages near Jenin after Israeli forces entered.
Separately, the Islamic militant group Hamas says Israel arrested four of its senior members in Ramallah.
Several Palestinians have been killed in fighting with Israeli soldiers seeking to arrest militants in the West Bank in recent months.

French President Banned From Knesset After Speech Snub
Posted by: Staff Writer  October 30, 2013 , 2:19 pm
"Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay. (Ecclesiastes 5:4)
Knesset speaker Yuli Edelstein has banned French President Fancois Hollande from Knesset after he cancled a scheduled speech in front of the Israeli parliament. (Photo: Avi Ohayon/GPO/Flash90)
After canceling a scheduled speech at the Knesset, French president Francois Hollande has been banned from the Israeli parliament by Knesset speaker Yuli Edelstein, according to The Times of Israel.
Edelstein told French authorities that he would not meet with Francois Hollande in the Knesset, as planned, and that in the future visiting French ministers would not be invited to official Knesset events or meetings with MKs, the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported Wednesday.
Hollande, who is scheduled to arrive in Israel in three weeks, was given a special honor of being invited to address the Knesset plenum and speak with Edelstein however, French authorities notified Edelstein that Hollande had decided to forgo the Knesset speech in favor of a public address to be made at a university, either in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem.
Edelstein said Wednesday that it was the French who had initially requested the opportunity to address the Knesset in the first place, a fact that made their about-face even more egregious.
“The Israeli MKs deserve to hear what the French president has to say,” Edelstein told Army Radio.
He clarified in the Army Radio interview that individual MKs and lobbies could always invite French officials of their own accord. The leader of a foreign nation of the caliber of France, making an official visit to the Knesset, is usually given the red carpet treatment.
This is not the first time the Israeli parliament has been forgone. When US President Barack Obama visited the Holy Land in March he too chose not to address the Knesset.

Palestinian President Celebrates Released Terrorists’ Returns in Ramallah

Let not them that are wrongfully mine enemies rejoice over me; neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause. (Psalms 35:19)
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas waves with released Palestinian prisoners coming from Israeli jails during celebrations at Abbas’ headquarter in the West Bank town of Ramallah on Tuesday. (Photo: Issam Rimawi/Flash90)
Among the thousands gathered in Ramallah to welcome the 26 murders Israel released as a good-faith measure late Tuesday night, was Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, according to The Times of Israel. All 26 were convicted murderers, most of them jailed for crimes committed before the 1993 Oslo Accords.
A raucous crowd welcomed the released men home while wielding Fatah and Palestinian flags and AK-47 rifles. The prisoners were greeted in front of Yasser Arafat’s mausoleum next to the Palestinian Authority headquarters in Ramallah by assorted Palestinian dignitaries, led by President Mahmoud Abbas, who kissed and embraced each of the men in succession.
Addressing the assembled Palestinians, Abbas said there would be no peace treaty so long as there are Palestinian prisoners behind lock and key in Israel. He promised to continue in his efforts to free all the prisoners from Israeli incarceration.
“Today is a day of joy for the family and for all of Palestine,” said Tayser Shubair, whose brother Hazem was jailed in 1994. “My brother is a freedom fighter and we are proud of him and we thank the president [Abbas] for his effort to get him out.”

Firing Up the Nations – What Christians Can Teach Jews About Israel
Posted by: Tuly Weisz  October 25, 2013 , 8:18 am
4,000 Years ago, Abraham established Jewish ownership in Israel; Today, twice as many Evangelicals than American Jews believe God gave Israel to the Jewish people.

This weekend, tens of thousands of Jews will arrive in Hebron to spend the Sabbath in the place where the Patriarchs and Matriarchs are buried.  Guest houses will be filled, mattresses will be spread out on classroom floors, and tents will be built in the streets to accommodate the influx of visitors for this awesome weekend.  What makes this Shabbat in particular so special in Hebron?  This week’s Torah portion describes Abraham’s purchase of “the cave of Machpela facing Mamre, which is in Hebron, in the Land of Canaan” as a final resting place for his beloved wife Sarah.

Genesis 23 contains the very first account of property being purchased in Israel and is one of three sites the Bible identifies as having been purchased by Israelites from its foreign owners. Sadly, in today’s environment, Jewish sovereignty over Judaism’s holiest sites has been rejected by many people around the world. Some deny that the Jews’ connection to Israel has anything to do with God. Others agree that it might have once been the case, but God has subsequently broke his covenant with the Jewish people.

Last month, the Washington Post described Hebron as one of the “Jewish settlements in the West Bank that are considered by Palestinians and much of the world to be illegal under international law.”  And this rejection is not limited to Hebron.  The Church of Scotland issued a report earlier this year, concluding, “…Christians should not be supporting any claims by any people to an exclusive or even privileged divine right to possess particular territory. We believe that is a misuse of the Hebrew Bible (the Christian Old Testament) and the New Testament to use it as a topographic guide to settle contemporary conflicts over land. In the Bible, God’s promises extend in hope to all land and people.”

What is even more tragic than the Washington Post denying the Jewish claim to Hebron or the Church of Scotland rejecting God’s covenant with Israel, is that a majority of American Jews don’t recognize the divine connection to our ancestral homeland. In a recent Pew study, only 40% of American Jews “believe God gave Israel to the Jewish people.” When asked the same question, however, an overwhelming 82% of white Evangelical Christians agreed!  Unlike the Church of Scotland, so many American Evangelicals reject the ridiculousness of ‘Replacement Theology’ and accept God’s word as true and eternal.
On the one hand, it is entirely discouraging that a majority of American Jews deny what Christians can see, but perhaps this sad statistic has room for a more hopeful interpretation and can be understood in light of a prophetic Biblical text.

The beautiful Psalm 126 describes how future events will unfold: “When God returned the captives of Zion we were like dreamers. Our mouths were filled with laughter and song.”  The Psalm then describes those who will recognize God’s hand in these events: first, “then the nations will say, ‘The Lord hath done great things with them’” and only then will the Jews themselves acknowledge, “The Lord hath done great things with us; we were overjoyed.”
According to many Biblical commentators, the “nations” mentioned in Psalm 126 refers to King Cyrus, who allowed the Jews to return to Jerusalem and rebuild their Temple. The Gentile king issued a declaration thanking God for allowing him to succeed, and asking the Jews to pray on his behalf.  Only then could the Jews express their own joy and wonder at God’s mysterious ways.  But I’d like to share a more modern interpretation of this passage.

Just the other day, I got together with Derek from Florida, one of our Israel365 readers, in Jerusalem.  We discussed this very Psalm at a cafe near the Machane Yehuda market.  Derek pointed out that by first the gentile, then the Jew, recognizing God’s hand in the rebirth of Israel describes the miracle taking place in our generation, where those who throughout history rejected the Jewish connection to Israel are now bearing witness to God’s acts there on behalf of the Jews. The fact that Evangelical Christians today are more than twice as likely than Jews to acknowledge God’s role in giving Israel to the Jewish people has newfound meaning.
As an Orthodox Jew, I am enthusiastic about the possibilities in working with pro Israel Christians who have a unique role today.  Christian Zionists can — and should —  encourage their Jewish friends to study the life and lessons of Abraham, to embrace their Jewish destiny and to uncover their connection to Biblical Israel. Hebron is a city of unity where Ishmael and Yitzchak put aside their differences and came together to bury their father Abraham. May the Biblical city be a reminder for all Jewish and Christian Zionists to put aside our differences to learn from and inspire each other as brothers honoring our Father in Heaven.

Hobby Lobby Head Donates Collection To Judeo-Christian Bible Museum
Posted by: Staff Writer  October 24, 2013 , 9:44 am
…for they have observed Thy word, and keep Thy covenant. (Deuteronomy 33:9)

Despite numerous assertions that he is an Anti-Semite, polarizing Hobby Lobby president Steve Green has donated his collection of ancient Codex Climaci Rescriptus, a 6th to 8th century CE palimpsest whose Greek and Palestinian Aramaic Gospels were overwritten with Syriac, to the Jerusalem Bible Land Museum, which opened on Wednesday.
According to The Times of Israel, the museum is a new traveling exhibition of rare Biblical texts and artifacts spanning two millennia, from lands as disparate and distant as Germany and Iraq, and written in at least a half a dozen languages. The exhibit, entitled “The Book of Books,” compiles over 200 texts with the ambitious aim of presenting the history of the Judeo-Christian document over the course of Western history through its textual heritage. Among the documents on display are fragments of the earliest Greek translation of the Bible — the Septuagint — early New Testament scriptures, vibrant illuminated manuscripts, rare fragments from the Cairo Geniza and pages from the Gutenberg Bible, the first set to print.Curators said instead of sticking to illegible, dusty, leather-bound tomes, they combined curious artifacts and exotic documents — such as prayer amulets engraved on silver rolls, 1,500-year-old Iraqi incantation bowls and elaborately illustrated prayer books — to animate the exhibit.
Green’s collection is thought to be the highlight of the exhibit.
The project was “unlike anything we’ve done before,” said Bible Lands Museum Director Amanda Weiss at the gala kickoff of the exhibition. “It’s a marriage of two cultures, two faiths” which incorporates cutting edge technology to present ancient manuscripts with “a courageous design concept.”

Green said that although the 40,000 biblical antiquities are based far from Jerusalem in Oklahoma, “we hope this exhibit will bring us together and unite us under a book we all love, the scriptures.”
“It is exciting to be right here in Jerusalem where many of these items come from,” he said.
Green, an evangelical Christian, recently revealed he would house what he calls “the world’s oldest Jewish prayer book,” said to date from 840, which he purchased a year ago, in a museum being built to house the collection in Washington D.C.
The 400,000 square foot museum, situated two blocks from the US Capitol building in Washington DC, will also house the exhibit on display in Jerusalem. It is set to open to the public in 2017.
“We’ll be able to tell three different stories,” Green said, “the history of the Bible, the impact of the Bible, and the Bible’s story — what does the Bible say.”
Green and his family had come under fire last month after reports from numerous customers that one of his Hobby Lobby branches was refusing to carry Hanukkah-related items because they do not “cater to you people”. Following immense media pressure the store eventually agreed to sell a few of the Jewish holiday’s products.
For Green, the Book of Books exhibit is only the tip of the iceberg. He said his foundation’s long term ambition is not only the advancement of biblical education through the museum, but “developing a curriculum that we are looking at going into public schools in the US as well as places all across the world.”
The exhibition at the Bible Lands Museum runs through May 2014, at which point it travels to the Vatican and then Seoul, South Korea.

For thus saith the LORD: sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout at the head of the nations; announce ye, praise ye, and say: ‘O LORD, save Thy people, The remnant of Israel.’ (Jeremiah 31:6)

Pop superstar Rihanna had already angered Israeli fans by taking the stage over an hour later and only plays a one hour set at her concert at Tel Aviv’s HaYarkon Park on Tuesday. Now more controversy continues to mount after reports that the diva changed the words to one of her songs in order tosupport “Palestine”.

Palestinian Terrorist Shoots 9-Year Old Girl In West Bank
Posted by: Doni Kandel October 6, 2013 , 11:33 am

"The angel who hath redeemed me from all evil, bless the young; and let my name be named in them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.’ (Genesis 48:16)

A 9-year old Jewish girl who was shot by a Palestinian sniper in the Jewish settlement of Psagot, seen brought to Shaare Tzedek hospital in Jerusalem on October 5, 2013, The girl is in serious but stable condition, she was shot in the balcony of her home in Psagot. Security forces are scanning the location. (Photo: Flash90)

A Palestinian gunman who shot a 9-year old girl in the Israeli West Bank town of Pisgaot is still at large and has likely fled the area the IDF reported early Sunday, according to The Times of Israel. The search was set to continue throughout the day, and Psagot residents were told they could return to their normal routine, after overnight fears that the attacker was still hiding out in the settlement.
The child, Noam Glick, was reportedly shot by a Palestinian at close range while playing in her front yard. “I went outside, and Noam told us there was an Arab there,” the victim’s father, Yisrael Glick, told Army Radio on Sunday morning. “I understood this was a security situation, dangerous to our lives, the most frightening thing that can happen to a family — that a terrorist came into the house.”
He said that he heard gunshots and was able to pull his daughter into the house. By the time he emerged from the house again with his weapon, he said, the attacker had fled.
Glick said that the attacker was “startled” by the girl playing in the yard, “so instead of entering the house he shot her.”
Doctors at Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek medical center said the girl, who did not lose consciousness during the incident, had sustained light injuries and was in good condition. It was “not clear” whether she had been shot or stabbed, according to hospital physician Dr. Danny Fink.
“The girl’s survival is a miracle,” Fink told Maariv Sunday. The victim, who underwent surgery overnight, had a deep gash along the base of her neck and her upper chest area and was wounded in one ear, he said.
Officials have said that they do believe this was a terror attack. Authorities said a breach in the Psagot fence was discovered overnight, with signs of forced entry and footprints nearby. An “improvised weapon,” believed by officials to be the one used in the attack, was found outside the settlement.
Shortly after the incident, Israeli forces numbering in the hundreds entered the neighboring Palestinian town of al-Bireh, where the shooter was thought to have come from. Security forces, said to include troops from elite IDF units, began the search on the outskirts of the town, near a soccer stadium, and Palestinian security forces had been called in to clear the area.
The Palestinian Ma’an news agency reported two Palestinians were lightly injured by rubber bullets in an altercation with troops that erupted during the incursion.
Shortly after the Psagot attack, shots were reportedly fired at a motorcyclist on the road between Psagot and the nearby settlement of Kochav Ya’akov. No injuries were reported. A police official also said rocks were thrown at vehicles on the road leading into Psagot after the child was shot.
Psagot residents were told to stay in their homes past midnight Saturday; those with firearms were instructed to keep them by their side. Soldiers conducted a house-to-house search of the settlement. Residents were informed via text message to anticipate a knock on the door, to answer in Hebrew, and to await identification.
Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon on Saturday urged Israeli peace negotiators to rethink current talks with their Palestinian counterparts, following the shooting of an Israeli child in the West Bank, according to the Jerusalem Post.
He insisted that the Saturday shooting of a nine-year-old girl in the settlement of Psagot proves “those who support terrorism” can not be trusted partners in peace.
He then vowed to catch the alleged Palestinian shooter, saying “If a person shoots a nine-year-old girl, their blood is on their own head.”
“We must put an end to hypocrisy of the Palestinian leadership,” Danon added.
Meanwhile, Deputy Transportation Minister Tzipi Hotovely said “The rise in terrorist attacks requires Israel to stop negotiations”.
“This is a result of the Palestinian Authority’s system of incitement and two-faced policy. On the one hand, they say they want peace, and on the other hand they incite against Israel.”
According to Hotovely, “nothing has changed since Arafat; there was no partner and there is no partner for peace.”

Jews From All Over the World Buying Homes Throughout Israel
Posted by: Jonathan Benedek October 6, 2013 , 3:30 pm
http://www.breakingisraelnews.com/jews-around-world-buying-homes-throughout-israel/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=jews-around-world-buying-homes-throughout-israel

"And it shall be that after I uproot them I will pity them again, and I will return each man to his heritage and each man to his Land. JEREMIAH (12:15)

While much of the world feels the pinch of a housing crunch, all signs point to a continued increase in demand for real estate in Israel, according to Tzvi Shapiro and Chaim Friedman, co-founders of the First Israel Mortgage company. In a recent interview with Breaking Israel News affiliate Yishai Fleisher, Shapiro and Friedman explained where the recent growth in the Israeli housing market was coming from.
Friedman and Shapiro are both immigrants to Israel from the United States. They opened the First Israel Mortgage Company in order help other immigrants navigate the system of Israeli bureaucracy and enable more Jewish families to purchase homes in Israel. What they encountered once opening their company surprised the two founders. According to Shapiro, it is not just Jewish families from New York or Los Angeles who are buying property in Israel for purposes of visiting during the summer or over the Jewish holidays. There are also many Jews from places such as Mexico City, Panama, and Europe, who are buying property in Israel just in case they need it as an “insurance policy.” Anti-semitism in these countries has led to an increased interest in immigration to Israel from Jews in these countries.
Jews are not the only buyers of homes in Israel. There are a good number of non-Jews who are buying property in Israel as well, said Shapiro. In recent years, a number of Chinese Christians have purchased homes in Israel for reasons over than as an investment opportunity. Many have bought property and donated the homes to provide housing for Israeli soldiers whose families are overseas. “Lone Soldiers” often have to rent rooms or find other less than ideal housing accommodations, and as a result of the demand from Jewish and non Jewish sources from all over the world, Israel has escaped the global housing bubble.
While there are certainly universal aspects to the Israeli mortgage industry, there is one particular reason to be optimistic about the housing market in Israel. First Israel’s Friedman stated that “if you look at what’s going on now, and how much it’s Israel’s been built up and how much it’s blossomed, it would be very hard for me to believe that God did all this just for it to all go away.”

Netanyahu Blasts PA For Refusing To Recognize Jewish State
Posted by: Doni Kandel  October 7, 2013 , 5:13 am

"For thou art a holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be His own treasure, out of all peoples that are upon the face of the earth. (Deuteronomy 7:6)

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivers a speech at Bar-Ilan University in Ramat Gan, near Tel Aviv, on October 6, 2014. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the 2020 Vision for Israel Conference in Bar Ilan University that “the Palestinians must recognize Israel as the state of the Jewish people.” ({hoto: Reuven Kastro/Pool/Flash90)

Four years ago newly elected Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a speech at Bar Ilan University fully endorsing the two-state solution. Four years later, Netanyahu took the podium at the central Israel university with a changed tone.

Speaking at the 20th anniversary of the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies, the Israeli primer blamed the stagnation of the peace process on the Palestinian Authority’s refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish State and expressed serious doubts about the two-state solution, according to The Times of Israel.

“The Palestinians must abandon their refusal to recognize the right of the Jewish people to have their national state,” he said.

Netanyahu dismissed claims that Israel’s presence in the Judea and Samaria stood at the heart of the conflict, stating instead that as long as the Palestinians don’t internalize the Jewish state’s right to exist, there will not be peace.

“In order for the process in which we find ourselves to be significant… in order for it to have a real chance of success,” he said, referring to the current rounds of negotiations begun this summer, “it’s necessary to hear the Palestinian leadership finally say that it recognizes the right of the Jewish people to a state of its own, which is the state of Israel.”

“I hope that it shall be so, so that we can advance a real solution to the conflict,” continued Netanyahu.

The prime minister also called for Palestinians to give up on their demand for Palestinian refugees and their descendants to return to areas now inside Israel. “The Palestinians must abandon their [demand for a] right of return,” he said.

And he said any agreement would need to address Israel’s security needs. “After generations of incitement, we have no confidence that recognition [of Israel] will trickle down to the Palestinian people. Therefore, we need very strong security arrangements, we need very strong security arrangements,
In 2009, also speaking at Bar-Ilan University, Netanyahu said that “if we get a guarantee of demilitarization, and if the Palestinians recognize Israel as the Jewish state, we are ready to agree to a real peace agreement, a demilitarized Palestinian state side by side with the Jewish state.”

At the time the speech made headlines as being the first time an Israeli PM had openly endorsed the two-state solution.

Netanyahu also addressed the Iranian nuclear issue, reiterating his distrust of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s peace overtures to the West at the United Nations and saying Iran aspires “to rule the entire Middle East” and destroy the state of Israel.

He repeated his insistence that Iran abandon its uranium enrichment capacity and dismantle its plutonium core, saying those apparatuses are “not necessary at all for [civilian] nuclear energy,” and that only a state seeking a bomb would refuse to give them up.

Israeli Christians Declare Affinity for Jewish State
Posted by: Ahuva Balofsky  October 8, 2013 , 10:33 am
“For the LORD will have compassion on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land; and the stranger shall join himself with them, and they shall cleave to the house of Jacob.”  (Isaiah 14:1)

At a meeting of the top Christian Arab officials in Israel, Father Gabriel Naddaf said, “The Christian public wants to integrate into Israeli society.” (Photo: Moshe Milner/GPO/Flash90)
At a recent conference in Jerusalem, leading Israeli Christians gathered to set themselves apart from their Muslim counterparts and declare their affinity for the Jewish state in which they reside.  At the conference, entitled “Israeli Christians: Breaking Free? The advent of an independent Christian voice in Israel,” representatives of the community reiterated one by one, “We are not Arabs, we are Christians who speak Arabic.”

Father Gabriel Naddaf of Nazareth, spiritual leader of the Israeli Christian Recruitment Forum, spoke first.  ”I am here to open the public’s eyes,” he said. “If we want to refrain from lying to our own souls and to the general public, we must say clearly and unwaveringly: enough!

“The Christian public wants to integrate into Israeli society, against the wishes of its old leadership. There are those who keep pushing us to the margins, keeping us the victims [of a] nationalism that is not our own, and of a conflict that has nothing to do with us,” Israel Hayom reported.

Naddaf also quoted the founder of the  Israeli Christian Recruitment Forum, Maj. Ihab Shlayan, as saying: “The Christians will not be made into hostages, or allow themselves to be controlled by those who wish to impose their nationality, religion and way of life upon us. We will not agree to hide behind the groups that control the streets. We want to live in Israel — brothers in arms and brothers in peace. We want to stand guard and serve as the first line of defense in this Holy Land, the Land of Israel.”

The Christian community in Israel is the only growing Christian community in the Middle East.  It sees its roots in the Jewish people, and blames the Arab invasions of the 7th century for destroying its unique culture.
“It is unthinkable that our children will be raised on the history of the Nakba and on the hatred of Jews, and not be taught their history,” Naddaf said.

Capt. Bishara Shlayan, founder of the Christian Israeli Party, echoed his sentiments.  ”We were raised on Arab political parties,” he said, “the communists, and then the National Democratic Assembly. In time, I realized where these Arab parties were taking us — only against Israel.

“We need to create a different culture,” he continued. “We need to hand out Israeli flags to every child. Education begins here. You enter a school in Nazareth, and you will not see a single Israeli flag. They don’t recognize it. You will only see Palestinian flags.”

Lt. (ret.) Shaadi Khalloul, the spokesman of the Israeli Christian Recruitment Forum and an officer in the Israel Defense Forces Paratroopers Brigade, also spoke.  ”The typical Christian student thinks that he belongs to the Arab people and the Islamic nation, instead of speaking to the people with whom he truly shares his roots — the Jewish people, whose origins are in the Land of Israel.”  Over the past three years, Khalloul has fought to have his community recognized by the Interior Ministry as Aramaic Christians, a name that would strengthen their ties to the Jewish community.  Prior to the Arab invasion, Aramaic was the common language spoken in Israel, by Jews and Christians alike.  He calls his group “Bnei Keyama”, meaning allies in Aramaic.  He says he has nothing against Arabs, but does not share their identity.  He claims it is problematic that he is associated with the Arab community, because it pulls him into a conflict that is not his own.

“The typical Christian student thinks that he belongs to the Arab people and the Islamic nation, instead of speaking to the people with whom he truly shares his roots — the Jewish people, whose origins are in the Land of Israel,” Khalloul said.
The conference was a joint effort of the Liaison Committee of B’nai B’rith World Center in Jerusalem and the Ecumenical Theological Research Fraternity in Israel.

Over 800,000 Pack Jerusalem For Largest Funeral In Israeli History
Posted by: Doni Kandel October 8, 2013 , 10:53 am

In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon. (Zechariah 12:11)

Over 800,000 people flocked to the Jerusalem area on Monday to mourn the passing of former Sephardic Chief Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, according to The Times of Israel. The outspoken spiritual leader passed away earlier that day at the age of 93

“We’ve been left orphans,” Aryeh Deri, the political leader of the Shas, the Israeli political party of the Sephardic haredi community that was founded by Rabbi Yosef, steered by Yosef, wailed at a funeral ceremony. “We have no father. We have no leader.”

In addition to his political accolades, Rabbi Yosef was remembered as a giant of Torah learning who had a penchant for bringing thousands closer to Jewish halakhah through lenient rulings.
“His greatness wasn’t measured but rather it was felt as a spiritual wind in every corner, lighting up the darkness in unexpected places. When I met him I sensed he was a great man with an unbelievable memory and the wisdom to share his knowledge with others. His contribution was his love for Israel and he solved problems no-one else could solve using his wisdom and spirituality,” President Shimon Peres said in a eulogy after Yosef’s death.
The city of Jerusalem came to an utter standstill following the rabbi’s passing as nearly 850,000 people, officials said, came to pay their last respects, making it the largest funeral in Israel’s history. 300 attendees required medical attention, including 17 who were evacuated to hospitals and one woman who gave birth.

“The world of yesterday will not exist tomorrow. There was no one like him, and there will not be in the future,” lamented Yosef’s son, Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef.

“Father, father,” another son, Rabbi David Yosef, cried out, “you raised us in the Torah, we were fortunate to be your sons. Every time we had a hard question, you brought us in to the world of halacha…Father, who will be ask now? Father, with whom will we speak?”
Batia Siebzehner, an expert on Shas at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, said Yosef’s crossover appeal would make it difficult to replace him. She said Shas supporters were divided between ultra-Orthodox followers and working-class Sephardic Jews attracted to his message of ethnic empowerment.
“Shas is a social movement, a political party and a new interpretation of religion,” she said. “Nobody has the capacity to act as a glue between the different groups.”

Collapse reported on Temple Mount
Tuesday, August 27, 2013 |  Israel Today Staff
http://www.israeltoday.co.il/NewsItem/tabid/178/nid/24078/Default.aspx#.Uh5YrFWQVyE.facebook

Eyewitnesses told Turkish media this week that a portion of the Temple Mount platform near the Al Aqsa Mosque has collapsed, creating a serious safety hazard and a possible threat to the stability of the Islamic structure.

If the report is accurate, it would be the second serious collapse on the Temple Mount in the past five years.

Palestinian officials claim that the collapses are caused by deliberate Israeli action to bring down the Al Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock so that the Jewish Temple can be rebuilt.

But archaeologists and engineers have been warning for years that the heavy construction projects being carried out by the Muslims atop the Temple Mount are destabilizing the huge number of ancient structures and water cisterns that riddle the sacred plateau.

Many believe it is only a matter of time before most of the platform collapses. And there are fears such a collapse could occur during Ramadan, when upwards of 100,000 Muslims gather atop the Temple Mount for weekly prayers.

17 Yemenite Jews brought to Israel in covert operation
YemenVisiting US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey met with top Israeli military brass on Wednesday to discuss regional cooperation and the strengthening of military ties between Israel and the US.
Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon stressed the central role that Iran was playing in current events and the need for Israel to remain vigilant.

“The instability in the Middle East is due, in part, to the Iranian regime, which is involved in every conflict in the area,” he said. “We also need to be prepared for a prolonged conflict and instability in Syria. We must not let the Tehran-Damascus-Beirut axis of evil to win this conflict.”

The Jewish Agency on Wednesday night helped a group of 17 Jews to move to Israel from Yemen, in a covert maneuver reminiscent of 1949-50’s Operation Magic Carpet, the first mass aliya after the foundation of the state.

Citing heightened security concerns and increasing tensions in Yemen, two sets of parents were brought directly to Israel, along with 10 of their children who had been living in Argentina.

The immigrants landed at Ben-Gurion Airport and were taken to an absorption center in the South. Read more at the Jerusalem Post.

Jewish Agency chairman Natan Sharansky said: “Tonight we are privileged to engage in a mission that combined the saving of lives, the reunification of a family and immigration to Israel.

Behind the scenes of this operation lies the dedication and expertise of the Jewish Agency and our partner organizations who all contributed to the mission’s success.

“The Jewish Agency stands at the ready to bring any Yemeni Jew who expresses interest in making aliya to Israel, and to help the local community in any way possible,” Sharansky said.

The members of the group had attempted to enter the United Kingdom with the hope of obtaining refugee status. However, after leaving Yemen, they learned that they were denied entry to the UK and would be brought to Argentina instead.

Ten of these children (with Yahia Karni the father of six and and Haim Karni the father of four) were on Wednesday’s flight to Israel.

Recently, Yemenite Jews have been targets of threats by Islamists, including those who identify with al-Qaida.

Anti-Semitic threats and attacks in Yemen have been on the rise since 2008, when schoolteacher Moshe Nahari was killed. His wife and nine children immigrated to Israel.

Anti-Semitic incidents spiked in 2010 when community leader Aaron Zindani was stabbed to death in a market. Subsequently, his wife and five children immigrated to Israel, and took his body with them for burial in the Jewish state, with assistance from the Jewish Agency and the Foreign Ministry.

Things worsened again in 2012 after the ouster of Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh.

As a consequence, the number of Yemenite Jews immigrating to Israel in the past few years has reached recent highs.

An estimated 100 Jews live in Yemen. Half reside in the capital Sanaa in a protected area, while the rest are in Omran province’s city of Rida.

Amnesty International has previously written to the Yemeni government, urging the country to protect its Jewish citizens.

The organization stated that it is “deeply concerned for the safety of members of the Jewish community in northwestern Yemen following the killing of one member of the community and anonymous serious threats to others to leave Yemen or face death.”
