"...so that there will not be among you a man or a woman or family or tribe
whose heart turns away today from the Lord our God..." - Deuteronomy
29:18.

There are many enemies within the home-
- seeking to destroy the family.

Let me share a few:

Materialism
People are over-committed, mostly through workaholism, just to make more money.
This is true for all ages with our over-organized children's activities.

Morals
Approximately 34% of all births in the U.S. are to single moms.
Even in some families that have a dad, he's often absent or practically non-existent.

Media
Kids spend more time with the TV and internet than they do with their parents.
And its influence can be overwhelmingly negative.

It's a substitute for family communication.
Internet pornography is devastating marriages and perverting how some men view women.

Parents!

A vibrant relationship with God through Jesus Christ-
- is the best way to battle the many enemies within the home!

"I urge you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ...to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me."
Romans 15:30.

To be a missionary in today's world-
One has to separate himself from the I-want-it-now culture we live in.

Results on the mission field can be slow going!
So it's not uncommon for missionaries to retire having seen but a handful of conversions during their entire career.

This fact is enough to discourage many people-
- from ever becoming full-time missionaries.

But for those who have heard their Divine calling to missions-
- nothing—not even the lack of apparent progress
- or the constant persecution—can keep them from fulfilling their task.

One reason they are able to push on is that-
- they have Christian brothers and sisters faithfully supporting them through prayer.

Fellow believers!
We should never underestimate the power of our words offered up to God-
- on behalf of the brave souls on the mission field.

God hears those words and grants His workers the ability-
- to remain encouraged and faithful to the cause.

Prayer for our missionaries is tantamount to the work itself!

American missionary Samuel Zwemer once said:
"The history of missions is the history of answered prayer."

Remember us in your prayers-
- that we grow not weary in well doing!

"Anyone who is among the living has hope - even a live dog is better off than a dead lion!" Ecclesiastes 9:4.

We spend a lot of time reaching out to students, parents, and to adults in general.

I was thinking today - what about you teachers?
What a job you have!

And everywhere you turn, you are constantly bombarded with more and more rules you must follow.
Such an important role you play in all of our lives, yet you have one of the most thankless jobs anywhere.

Do you ever feel that there is no hope for you or possibly no hope for one of your students?

Hopefully, this scripture will remind you that where there is life, there is hope.

As you teach longer, you may think your productive classroom years are behind you.
Maybe your accomplishments seem so small and you're wishing you had done more.

The students you did not reach, and the students who never cared probably haunt your memories.
Even your victories may seem insignificant.

Well, let me tell you something.
You are WRONG!

God has purpose for your existence.
He designed you to teach.

Your place of employment and/or job assignment may change through the years, but you will always have purpose.

You need to discover God’s purpose in each day and pursue it with all your might.

Too often we all seek the "big picture" before we start the puzzle.
But,
often God asks us to place each piece of our puzzle before Him daily
and He will bring the big picture into focus in His time.

Frustrating, I know, but it's the truth.

Set God's work and His love as your goal and press toward it with all your might.
Only in eternity will you know how valuable yesterday's class was in His Kingdom and what today's plans will accomplish.

Live today to its fullest.

The secret to success is purpose and perseverance.
God will lead you if you will follow.

Thank you for teaching and loving our kids.
God bless Teachers!

"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the
body, whether good or bad". 2 Corinthians 5:10.

Do you know where the expression "facing the music" comes from?

The story begins in medieval Japan with a man who wanted the
prestige that came from being a performer in the Imperial orchestra.

But there was a minor glitch:
He couldn't play an instrument.
Yet he knew what he wanted and pulled every possible string to accomplish his purposes.

Against his better judgment, the orchestra's conductor consented to let the man into the ensemble.
He gave him a flute, sat him in the most inconspicuous seat, and instructed him to try and fit in.

With each musical number, our man dutifully raised his instrument, puckered his lips, moved his fingers, and pretended to blow.
He went through the motions, but not a tweet ever escaped his flute.

This deception might have continued indefinitely, undetected, had it not been for the appointment of a new conductor.

This man's first act was to tell his musicians that each of them would have to audition.
One by one the players auditioned and were restored to their positions.

Eventually all finished, except for the fake flutist.

Frantic with worry, he claimed to be sick.
The doctor pronounced him "fit as a fiddle."

Finally the time came for the audition.
The flutist, unable to face the music, lost his position, his salary, his home, his future.

Now, there are a number of ways people prepare to face Judgment Day's music.

Some gamble there is no God.
They believe somehow, in some way, everything created itself.
Without God, they hold to the theory that the universe is the product of accidents.

Others think, "God is so good that He will never condemn sin.
And, if He does, "I'm okay, because I lead a pretty good life."

The Bible is consistent in saying-
- the Lord is coming and all of us will have to appear before Jesus the Judge.

Will you be ready to face the music?

You can be ready.

Through God-given faith in Jesus' cleansing blood-
- sinful souls can become prepared to face the music!

You've been walking by faith.
You've been believing God to meet your need.

But-
- what do you do when the results seem slow in coming.
And you are tempted to give up?
Be patient!
There is not much said about patience these days.
But, when it comes to receiving from God, it is just as important as faith.
It will make the difference between success and failure for you.
Patience undergirds and sustains faith until the result is manifested.
After you have meditated on the promises of God and have them in your spirit, patience will encourage you to hold steady.

Patience is power!

It has the courage to refuse the lie of Satan that says the Word is not working for you.
It knows that God's Word has never failed.

Patience will not draw back in fear!
But will press forward in faith until you have the answer.

When the results of your faith seem slow in coming-
Don't give up!

Continue to put the Word first, with patience! And you will surely receive the promise of God!!

My Manna
It was 1903!

Two young men stood perched on a sand dune overlooking the Atlantic.
The place Kitty Hawk, NC on the outer banks.

The boys we remember as Wilbur and Orville Wright.

They were launching a 40 foot long frame that weighed barely 750 pounds.

In a brief 12 second flight of less than a 120 feet the Wright Brothers became the fathers of modern aviation.

Imagine a gleaming metal object sat on our parking lot.

This metallic tube is 185.7726 feet long,
65.2833 feet high,
wings spreading 194.544 feet wide,
and weighing 317520 kg.

That object is called today a Boeing 747-400.
In 1903 there would have been no wildest imagination that such an object weighing (fully loaded) 317520 kg could ever fly.

Strapped to the earth by sheer weight and the law of gravity-
- it would be impossible to ever think it could soar through thin air.

But hundreds of times each day all over the world objects just like it do!

Do you ever feel like you are one of the Wright Brothers
sitting at Kitty Hawk with an 317520 kg hunk of metal on the sand trying to get it in the air?

Trying to walk in the Spirit-
- but glued to the ground?

The way to live an unbelievable, incredible life is found in God's Word.

In fact-
-the secret that sums up Peter's life, Paul's life and John's life.

This same secret summarizes how the galaxy of 1st through 21st century saints have stood alone triumphantly for Christ.

The secret they knew and followed was:
Fullness of the Spirit!

Walking in the Spirit is-
- living in the conscious presence of the Lord Jesus Christ,
- letting His mind, through the Word, dominate everything that is thought and done.

Being  filled with the Spirit is-
- the same as walking like Jesus did on earth!

My Manna

"Set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God...not on earthly things." Colossians 3:1.

Once upon a time a loaf of bread fell from a bakery truck and as it hit the ground a crumb broke loose.

Three sparrows all eyed the crumb and swooped down to grab it, but began fighting over it.

Eventually one of the sparrows succeeded in scooping up the crumb
in its beak and flew away with it—hotly pursued by the other two
sparrows.

A frenzied aerial fracas took place until the crumb was completely consumed.

The only thing these sparrows saw was the crumb.
None noticed the loaf still on the ground.

How often we consume our energies squabbling over trivialities-
- while the true riches of life go unnoticed and escape us.

And how often we concentrate our energies on non-essential issues-
- while the needs of the hurting are neglected and the lost go to hell!

May God give you the wisdom to see and the good sense to-
- major on the majors and
- not get carried away majoring on the minors!

"A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.
Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them." Matthew 7:18-20.

There are people today who say, "I am a Christian,"-
- but they are out getting drunk.

They say, "I am a Christian,"-
 - but they are having premarital sex or

- being unfaithful to their husband or wife.

They say, "I am a Christian,"-
- but in their business, they lie to people every single day.

They distort things.

They take money that is not really theirs.

There are a lot of people today who think they are Christians-
- but are not, because they have not really changed.

They are not living according to what the Bible teaches.

I am not saying that a Christian cannot sin.

I am not saying that a Christian won't slip up.

But I am saying that there is a big difference between-
- a person who slips up, sins, is sorry for it and wants to change
- and a person who lives in continual, willful, habitual sin.

The Bible says that if you live that way, you don't know God.

Maybe the reason that some people have never really known the joy of the Lord is that they have never met the basic requirements of salvation.

They think being a Christian is just having Jesus along for a ride.

They don't realize that He wants to be their Lord and wants to lead and guide them.

They don't realize that He has a distinct and unique plan and purpose for their lives.

Jesus Christ wants to be the Lord of every aspect of your life.

He wants to be the Lord of-
- your business,

- your free time,

- your relationships,

- your body, mind and soul...

If He is not the Lord of all-
- then He is not a Lord at all.

"After the fire there was a voice, a soft whisper." 1 Kings 19:12.

Sometimes we look for God in the wrong places.

We assume there has to be a hundred-voice choir singing before we can hear from God.
We look for God in thunder and lightning, trumpets and billowing smoke.

But that's not always God's way.
Yes, he can speak through fire or earthquakes or any way he chooses.

But when we hear him whisper, he knows we're really listening.

The hardest thing to do sometimes is to be quiet and listen.
We don't like silence.

We mistakenly assume that God isn't pleased with us-
- unless we're active, so we're always looking for things we can do for God.

We confuse stillness (spending quiet time with God) with idleness (doing nothing).
We'd rather be doing something--anything--than sitting still, so we immerse ourselves in noise and activity.

Then we wonder why we don't hear from God.

But God shouldn't have to shout in order to be heard.
He is God!
He shouldn't have to compete with the other noises in our lives.

If we want to hear from God-
- we need to stop making so much noise.

We need to get comfortable being quiet before the Lord-
- doing nothing but reading his Word,
- getting familiar with his Spirit,
- enjoying just being with him.

We must stop our activity long enough to listen for his whisper.
If we're quiet, we'll hear it.

What things make the most noise in your life?

"Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither;and whatever he does shall prosper."
Psalms 1:2-3.

One of my favorite passages in the Scriptures is Psalm 1.

Clearly this psalm holds an important key for our lives as believers to be fruitful and prosperous.

That key is meditation.

The psalmist describes the one who prospers as one who meditates "day and night"; a continual meditation developing the Godly habit of disciplining one’s mind in divine truth.

I love what Charles Spurgeon said about meditation:
"He is not the best student who reads the most books, but he who meditates the most upon them; he shall not learn most of divinity who hears the greatest number of sermons, but he who meditates the most devoutly upon what he does hear; nor shall he be so profound a scholar who takes down ponderous volumes one after the other, as he who, reading little by little, precept upon precept, and line upon line, digests what he learns, and assimilates each sentiment to his heart by meditation."

Meditation on the word of God brings its truth and light-
- to bear powerfully upon your mind and soul.

Since you are made in the image of God-
- you are not a shallow creature, but a very profound one.

You have the opportunity-
- to be deeply affected and
- beautifully transformed by the living words of God.

Don't miss out on it.

As you contemplate and reflect on His Word, allowing it to expose, redefine, and transform every area of your life, you will flourish like a tree planted by a river, and whatever you do will prosper!

Only remember:
It begins with meditation!

"Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me." Isaiah 6:8.

Warren Wiersbe's, Wycliffe Handbook of Preaching & Preachers, quotes:

"Millions
of surveys which we have helped to take around the world indicate that
approximately 98 percent of the Christians do not regularly introduce
others to the Saviour."

In a survey given to those attending
training sessions for a Billy Graham crusade in Detroit, attendees were
asked to answer this question by checking one of the following answers.

"What is your greatest hindrance in witnessing?"

0% said they don't care.

9% said they were too busy to remember to do it.

12% said their own lives were not speaking as they should.

28% felt the lack of real information to share.

51% feared the reactions of those with whom they might share.

If we truly believe that Jesus is the only way to eternal life-
- why aren't we spreading the word?

Maybe we don't really believe that.
I guess no one thought to include that reason on Billy's survey.

Do we truly believe in heaven?
Do we believe without a shadow of a doubt that Jesus is the only way to get there?

If we do, how can we keep our mouths closed to a world of people who are headed for the agony of eternal burning?

"Here am I."

This should be our cry to the Lord today.

"Send me, Lord!
Help me to open my mouth for you!
Work through me Lord, for your sake Lord, and for the sake of those who don't know you!"

Let's be about doing His business-
- and commit ourselves to sharing the good news with the lost around us!

"All those who want to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted." 2 Timothy 3:12.

Timothy's timid, sickly nature was a liability in a day-
- when people were thrown to the lions for their faith in Christ.

So Paul tried to prepare him for the dangers ahead-
- by warning him that anyone who practiced Christianity would be persecuted.

The only way to avoid persecution was to deny Christ.

Some Christians take suffering as a sign that they're out of God's will.

They
spend their entire lives avoiding anything that causes them discomfort,
even when it could be that God wants them to endure some discomfort for
his sake.

Look at it this way:

If God were only concerned that we be happy one hundred percent of the time, Jesus would never have gone to the cross.
John the Baptist would never have been beheaded.
Paul would never have been imprisoned.

God is more concerned with our obedience than with our comfort.

Now, you will probably never be thrown to the lions for your faith-
- but you may be mocked at school or at work.

You may be excluded from certain programmes.

You may not be as popular as you might have been.

If you seek to live a godly life-
- be assured that persecution will come.

Nevertheless, when you overcome it-
- you will share in the same glorious reward as John the Baptist, Jesus, and Paul.

The Bible assures us that no suffering in this life can match-
- the wonder of being loved by God for eternity

My Manna

"He cuts off every branch in me that bears no
fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will
be even more fruitful." John 15:2.

There was a man who would stop by the garden market each spring and buy a plant or bush.

He loved working in his garden caring for the plants.

One year, he bought a flowering patio tree with small purple flowers that bloomed all spring, summer, and fall.

In late fall, he would carry it to the barn, put it in an empty stall, and water it once or twice a month.

It was dormant and showed no signs of life in the winter.

In the spring, when he brought it back to the patio, he set it next to a window.
Each day, he watched it... hoping it would show some life again soon.

He took the pruning shears and shaped it, cared for it, and hoped for the best.
After a few weeks, he noticed a few green leaves sprouting out of the dead branches.
And a month later, almost all of the branches were covered with leaves.

If the man hadn't taken care of the tree and cut the dead branches-
- it wouldn't have looked so beautiful for the spring, summer, and fall.

In the same way-
Jesus sees the dead, unfruitful branches in us and cuts them away.

The dead branches can be-
- relationships that control our lives,
- material things,
- attitudes, or
- pride in work or ministry.

Only the Lord knows each person well enough to know-
- the exact branches that need to be cut away.

But, He is caring for you and watching over you all the time.

Thank God for knowing you so well-
- that He knows exactly which branches to trim,
- so you can be more fruitful.

"And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if
we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all
men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith." Galatians
6:9-10.

As we've been watching the news recently-
- it seems the word of the hour is crisis!

It seems everywhere we turn we hear it!

It's a "financial crisis",
- a "political crisis,"
- international, environmental, spiritual crisis!

I came across an interesting fact recently.

The Chinese word for crisis is composed of two symbols.

They represent two words:
Danger and opportunity.

When we're in the midst of all these crises-
- it's tempting to focus on the danger.

While it's important to be aware of the danger-
- we must be even more keenly aware of the opportunities it brings!

God is allowing this world to be shaken a little today.

Let's prepare ourselves-
- to be a means of peace and light and strength to those who are afraid.

Let's not grow weary in well doing.
There's so much work to be done!

"Repent now everyone of his evil way and his evil doings,
and dwell in the land that the Lord has given to you and your fathers
forever and ever." Jeremiah 25:5.

Recently, I’ve been studying the Jewish roots of many of Jesus' parables.

And I came across an interesting saying from a Jewish Rabbi that I believe has something to teach us.

Rabbi Eliezer said, "Repent one day before your death."

His disciples asked him, "Does then one know what day he will die?"

"Then all the more reason to repent today", he replied, "lest he die tomorrow, and thus his whole life is spent in repentance."

When I first became a believer-
I thought by simply dealing with my outward sins that I could live a state of sinlessness.

But it wasn't long before the Lord began revealing and dealing with my inward sins and attitudes.

Now, and the longer I walk with Him-
I understand more and more the meaning of daily repentance!

If we truly want to be free and walk in His liberty-
- we cannot avoid this crucial requirement for freedom.

Because we cannot receive His forgiveness without it-
- repentance must be a way of life for us. 1 John 1:9.

Staying close to the Lord is His heart's desire for us.
But one of the main conditions for it is walking in regular repentance.

When we walk in humility and truthfulness about our sin-
- we are walking in the light,
- and the blood of Jesus keeps cleansing us from sin.

In that condition we are so much more able to love the Lord and those around us -- with Him, touching one life at a time.

So, let's lay down our pride and turn to Him every day-
- with genuine repentance!

"Indeed, I myself thought I must do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth."
Acts 26:9.

The place where we can see life as a whole is in the presence of God.
There we are reminded of things we have forgotten or ignored.

See how the Good News Bible translates Acts 26:9:
"I myself thought that I should do everything I could against the cause of Jesus of Nazareth."

Here you see the root of Paul' s problem:
"I myself thought."

And is not that the underlying cause of many of our problems too?

We say, "I myself thought . . ." instead of asking:
"What does God think?"

Sometimes sailors will attempt to establish the position of their ships-
- by estimating the distance and direction they have travelled,
- rather than by astronomical observation.

This is called "dead reckoning."

It is sometimes necessary in foul weather-
- but it is fraught with peril!

One mariner has said:
"Undue
trust in the dead reckoning has produced more disastrous shipwrecks of
seaworthy ships than all other causes put together."

There are people who attempt the voyage of life by dead reckoning, but there is no need.

God has charted the map for us with loving care in the Scriptures.

And our plain duty is to study the chart so that-
- we might become better acquainted with His purposes and His ways.

For the better we know the Scriptures-
- the better we will know God.

We
cannot ignore the facts of history or science - they help - but if our
perspective is not drawn from the Scriptures it will lead us astray.

We must not rely on-
- dead reckoning,
- but on divine reckoning!

"Now the glory of the Lord rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the
seventh day He called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. " Exodus 24:15-18.

Patience is one of those things-
… so hard to learn it
…so hard to practice it faithfully in our daily walk.

But God requires it of us!

As I was reading through this passage again in Exodus-
- it dawned on me that Moses sat on the mountain for six entire days before the Lord spoke to him.

He had to patiently wait for the Lord for six days!

So
often we think we can just do as we please with our lives and then come
running to God for a few minutes of prayer and get an answer right away
but I don’t believe it is always that simple.

Even Moses needed to be prepared for six full days-
- in order to be able experience the awesome presence of the Lord!

If Moses had to wait six days-
-
then it should not surprise us if we need to wait 60 days, 60 months or
even 60 years for the Lord to prepare us to receive His blessing!

Perhaps the Lord is saying to us today:
"Be patient my child, if you wait on me I will give you a treat!"

Be encouraged!

The Lord is preparing us for great things.
Spend more time seeking Him and worshipping Him.

Keep waiting at His feet.
He will meet you!

"Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth." John 17:17.

There's a story about an old man who lived in the mountains with his young grandson.

Each morning, the grandfather would sit at the kitchen table and read from his worn-out Bible.

Wanting to be just like his grandfather, the young boy would imitate him by reading his own Bible.

One
day the grandson asked, "Grandfather, I try to read the Bible just like
you, but I don't understand it. When I do understand it, I forget as
soon as I close the book. What good does reading the Bible do?"

The grandfather simply replied, "Son, take this old wicker coal basket down to the river and bring back a basket of water."

The boy did as he was told, but the water leaked out of the basket before he could get back to the house.

The grandfather sent him back three more times and told him to move faster each time.

Every time, the frustrated boy returned with an empty basket.

Finally, out of breath, the young boy said to his grandfather, "See...it's useless!"

The old man said:
"Look at the basket.
Instead of a dirty old wicker coal basket, it's now clean.
Son, that's what happens when you read the Bible.
You might not understand it or remember everything you read, but when you do, it will change you from the inside out."

As believers in Christ in a fallen world-
- you and I must saturate our hearts and minds with the Word of God every day.

Just like the young boy above, it may seem that we can't retain or comprehend everything we read.

But remember that!
God uses His Word to change us from the inside out!

Make a commitment to the Lord to study His Word faithfully each day.

And pray that He will use the Scripture to cleanse you and make you more like Jesus.

"Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to serve alone? So tell her to give me a hand." Luke 10:40.

We often conclude from this story that Martha was the grump-
- while Mary was the one with the pure, simple motives.

But is sitting around always a better choice than working?

What
would happen if Christians spent all their time reading the Bible and
going to church, but never cleaned their rooms or mowed the grass?

So maybe we're being too hard on Martha... and not completely understanding what Jesus was saying.

Martha was showing her love for Jesus by being a good hostess to him.

No doubt-
- she wanted to spend time with her Lord as much as Mary did,
- but someone had to do the work.

Perhaps she thought if her sister would help out-
- they'd both have time to sit at Jesus' feet and learn from his teaching.

Maybe that's what aggravated Martha the most-
- hearing the muffled sounds of Jesus' voice in the other room,
- longing to hear what he was saying,
- but mad that she was stuck in the kitchen by herself.

So the more she worked-
- the more agitated she grew.

Finally, she couldn't stand it any more-
- and she took her frustrations out on Mary.

Jesus knew that both Mary and Martha loved him.

But what Martha didn't know was that-
- she didn't have to prove it to him by constantly working.

Sure, there are times to be busy-
- but there are also times to stop doing and start listening.

How can your efforts at serving Jesus-
- keep you from spending time with him?

Archeologists sometimes uncover less than they hope when digging-
- because someone else got there first, namely, grave robbers.

Artifacts that can help us understand past civilizations may be disturbed or the burial site looted.

Both groups seek the items made with precious metals or gemstones, but for different reasons.

In Psalm 16 we read about a type of grave robber.
This one robs the grave of death itself.

David believed that even death could not rob him of life because eternal life is found in God.

The ultimate fulfillment of Psalm 16:10 was in Christ.

Note the carefulness of the wording.
"You will not abandon me to the grave."

It does not say, "death."
Jesus did die, but He was not abandoned to the grave.
"Nor will you let your Holy One see decay."

Consider this carefully!

With death comes decay-
- unless the grave is emptied by God.

God emptied the grave of Jesus not with crowbars, shovels and picks-
- but by His awesome resurrection power.

Jesus truly died, but He did not remain dead.
Jesus truly lives!

The promise of Psalm 16 was fulfilled in every aspect when Jesus arose.

Your body will be in a grave.
And one day that grave will be robbed of death.
"The dead in Christ will rise first," Paul said. 1 Thess. 4:16.

Jesus has conquered death and sin.

If you have accepted Him as Saviour-
- be rest assured that life on this earth is temporary
- and that God will give you permanent life with Him.

Thank God now for the wonderful gift of eternal life

"Tomorrow is a Sabbath rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord." Exodus 16:23.

In 24 hours the average adult accomplishes much:
- his heart beats 103,689 times,
- his blood travels 168 million miles,
- he breathes 23,040 times,
- he inhales 438 cubic feet of air,
- he eats 3 1/2 pounds of food,
- he drinks 2.9 quarts of liquid,
- he speaks 4,800 words,
- he moves 750 muscles,
- his nails grow .000046 inch,
- and he exercises 7 million brain cells.

It's no wonder we need rest!

When God established the laws governing the lives of the Israelite people- He built into their schedule a time for rest.

Physically it enabled their bodies to recuperate.
Spiritually it reminded them that their salvation was not complete.

They needed a spiritual "rest"-
- that would come only when the Messiah would take away their sins.

The writer of Hebrews makes it clear that even though the Jewish
people practiced Sabbath-keeping, the real "rest" was a future event.

He
declared, "For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not
afterward have spoken of another day. There remains therefore a rest for
the people of God." Heb. 4:8-9.

In the New Testament the command to "remember the Sabbath day to
keep it holy" is the only one of the Ten Commandments not repeated, and
for a good reason.

The spiritual rest that the Old Testament saints looked forward to and which the Sabbath represented is now a reality.

Jesus said, "Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Matt. 11:28.

Taking a day to rest is still an important part of maintaining a healthy body.

But it's a physical necessity, not a spiritual law.
Now we can rejoice in the true rest that comes in Christ.

Real rest is-
- in the Lord,
- not in the law.

"Casting
down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against
the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the
obedience of Christ..."2 Corinthians 10:4-5.

Picture this!

You come home from a long day of work.
You walk into your living room.

Plop down on your couch in exhaustion.
And there in the corner of the room-
- your eyes are drawn to something moving.

It's a rattlesnake!

Do you say to yourself, "Oh, I'm too tired to worry about that now, I'll deal with it later?"

Of course not!

You'd jump up right away-
- find a bat or something of the like,
- alert your family,
- call the neighbours,
- call the fire department and who knows what else!

It's a life-threatening situation!

In the same way-
- we need to consider it an emergency when a negative thought enters our minds!

We immediately need to jump up-
- put our armour on,
- alert others,
- ask for help if needed,
- take cover in the promises of God!

When those unrighteous thoughts enter our minds-
- we must deal with them immediately,
- lest they linger and fester and before we know it,
- poison our entirety.

Sadly this is a battle that continuously rages on.

We must renew our minds daily-
- and even hourly in order to remain in a place of peace.

Let's not wait 'till the enemy has us in his grip!
Let's put him in his place at the first sign of attack!

"The mind-set of the flesh is death, but the mind-set of the Spirit is life and peace." Romans 8:6.

Setting your mind on something means-
- opening your mind to regular input from that source.

That's great if the source is a good one-
- like the Bible or uplifting music or the math facts you're supposed to know by tomorrow.

But what if you're repeatedly subjecting your mind to something evil?

The truth is, you will internalize whatever your mind is taking in.
You'll form values and attitudes based on the input you allow yourself to dwell on.

Our
world thinks there's no connection between the sinful practices we
observe through literature, television, and movies and the resulting
escalation in sinful lifestyles and crimes of violence.

That's not only nonsense, it's unbiblical!

The apostle Paul understood that there's a connection between what we allow into our minds and the way we live.
He realized that it's critical for Christians to focus on the right things.

Some things, he said, belong to the sinful nature, and others belong to the Spirit.
The category that dominates your thoughts will dominate your life.

Don't be cavalier enough to assume that-
- it's safe to dabble in sin without being affected.

Pornography, movies, and songs that elevate sexual deviance, crime, and violence...these do much more than entertain you.

They entice you into evil!

Be smart and take control of what's going into your brain.
Set your mind on those things God's Spirit desires.

How have you noticed your behaviour being affected by what you hear and see?

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of
those who love him, who have been called according to his
purpose."Romans 8:28.

Many years ago in London-
- a talented young man began preparing for the ministry.

He surrendered his life to Christ and wanted so badly to be used by the Lord.
He was a brilliant student and completed his studies seminary with honours.
Prior to his ordination-
- he was required to preach a sermon before a select group of clergymen.

The intensity of the situation made him nervous-
- especially when he saw his lovely fiance sitting in the audience.

In his anxiety, he lost his train of thought and the board failed to approve him for the ministry.
The rejection was a bitter disappointment.
And his grief increased when his fiance broke off their engagement because he had performed so poorly.

After these two events, he fought depression for quiet some time.
Several weeks later-
He poured out his complaint before God, and was reminded of God's promise in Romans 8:28.

It was then that he experienced an incredible peace in his soul.
When
the chance came around again, the young man delivered a powerful sermon
to the examining board and he was ordained to the ministry.

The dynamic preaching of G. Campbell Morgan has impacted thousands of people.
This infamous expositor authored several Bible commentaries and 60 books on theology.
Morgan
left a legacy that still stirs hearts today-and the crisis he went
through and overcame with God's help played a huge part.

Failure often causes us to think we've reached the end of our calling.
But many times we don't see the big picture.
God is working behind the scenes of your life.

If you are a believer and have experienced failure, don't give up!
God is using that failure to produce success and blessing in your life according to the promises in His Word.
Ask God to turn your failures into triumphs.
And thank Him for the promises of His Word.

"Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it." Proverbs 22:6.

Many years ago, a small Jewish boy asked his father-
"Why must we surrender our Jewish faith and start to attend Lutheran services here in Germany?"

The boy's father replied-
"Son, we must abandon our faith so that people will accept us and support our business adventures!"

That young boy held on to his disappointment and bitterness for the rest of his life-
- because his family abandoned their faith.

His faith in both his father and religion were crushed.

When this boy left Germany-
- he went to England to study where he formed unique philosophies for his own life.

From those theories, he wrote a book that changed the world:

The Communist Manifesto.

That boy was Karl Marx!

For 70 years, billions of people fell under the spell of his Marxist ideology.

The hypocritical influence of that little boy's father produced tragic consequences.

If the young people of our world do not receive godly faith and training from older believers-
- then they will develop distorted perspectives as well.

As a believer, you and I have the responsibility of spiritually parenting others to-
- follow Christ,

- serve Him faithfully, and

- do great things for His Kingdom.

Paul referred to Titus as "my true son in our common faith"-
- and Timothy as "my true son in the faith." Titus 1:4;1 Timothy 1:2.

Though they were not flesh and blood-- they bonded together as family and Paul raised them up to follow the Lord.

If
you know a young person who needs a faith-filled believer in his or her
life, then pray with and for them, and seek to teach them a love for
Scripture, a commitment to Jesus Christ, and to fellowship and worship
with the church.

Ask the Lord to bring a young person into your life whom you can spiritually parent!
