The Israeli Commandos Who Crossed the World to Rescue a Comrade

Or Asraf, a soldier in the elite IDF commando unit, Egoz, went missing in Nepal during the earthquake. Though, like him, his comrades-in-arms had finished their military service and begun civilian life, they came together and organized a mission to rescue him. Tragically, he was found dead.
One of his commanders, Gai Haris, joins VOI’s Ari Abramowitz and Jeremy Gimpel to recount the story that touched the heart of every Israeli — because the IDF never leaves a man behind, even if he’s on the other side of the world.

A Welcome Verdict

Temple Mount activist Yehuda Glick, who survived an assassination attempt last October, was given permission by a Jerusalem court to return to the holy site. This was following false claims by an Arab woman that he disturbed the sanctity of the place.
Glick, a recipient of this year’s prestigious Moskowitz Prize for Zionism, tells VOI’s Josh Hasten that it is not a complete victory, since the judge imposed restrictions on his visits. But, he says, he is pleased with the verdict.

After a video of an Israeli police officer beating an Ethiopian Israeli soldier went viral, the Ethiopian community reacted to what some say has been years of racist treatment. Is the Ethiopian community discriminated against? Do the police target Ethiopians? Has the Ethiopian community been successfully integrated into Israeli society?
With no public transportation running in Jerusalem on the Sabbath, a private company has begun offering service to prepaid members in the city. Is this a positive development? The US administration is pulling out all the stops, it appears, to get Israelis to believe the nuclear accord with Iran is in their best interest. This is a touching music video that commemorates Yom Hazikaron (Israeli Memorial Day) by recognizing from the source of Israel’s salvation.
Surrounded by danger in all directions, anticipating attacks at all times, the State of Israel is a true miracle. Although this video was published in 2012, set to a Psalm written by King David, it is just as relevant now.
We have lost so much and so many. On Yom Hazikaron, we remember those who have fallen and pray for a better tomorrow.
