Is Anyone Thirsty?
"Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near." (Isaiah 55:6)

Scripture Focus: Isaiah 55
Isaiah 55 is a passage full of invitation and encouragement to come, listen and seek. The human body knows hunger and thirst; we all need food and drink to survive. However, this is an invitation to eat and drink for free and in so doing find sustenance that is good - forever - for the soul. The New Living Translation starkly warns, "Listen, for the life of your soul is at stake" (vs. 3). If we heed the warning and respond to the invitation, then the LORD establishes His everlasting covenant with us: we will receive mercy, pardon and His unfailing love.
In verse 6 we are urged to seek the LORD while we can find Him and to call on Him while He is near. Don't miss the opportunity to seek and find restoration for your soul through Jesus. Perhaps your greatest need comes because you have never asked for the forgiveness of your sins. Do that today, while there is still time. Or maybe your soul is just tired and weary from the journey. Then turn to Him, the Good Shepherd, the Restorer of your soul.

Insight: Restoration For The Soul Is Available To The Thirsty, Weak, Broken, Needy, Crushed, Battered And Bruised. Seek The Lord, And Call On Him Now.

Are You a Foot Washer?

"I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you." (John 13:15)
Scripture Focus: John 13:1-17

One of the most humbling acts of ministry I have ever been a part of took place in a small house church in South Korea. Where I spent many an evening with a group of fellow christians. Mom and Pop as they were called ministered to Service men and women stationed in Korea lived in Seoul Korea

At one point Pop said, "Brother, can we wash your feet?" We accepted, and as they washed our feet we prayed for each other. Water poured down along with tears, first from one and then to another until all had been washed.

I often remind myself that, as we sing, our worship is first an offering to God. However, we also have the privilege through worship of "washing the feet" of the weary souls who gather there. I pray that you will be able to minister to a hurting friend today.

Insight: Is There An Act Of Humble Service That God Is Calling You To, Firstly For Him And Then For The Benefit Of Some Weary Soul?

Topic: +DEV+ Temple Rebuilt
Temple Rebuilt
"In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord." (Ephesians 2:21)
Scripture Focus: 1 Corinthians 12

As well as our individual role as the temple of the Holy Spirit, Paul reminds the believers in Ephesus (Ephesians 2:21), Corinth (1 Corinthians 3:16, 17) and us that together we also have a corporate role as a dwelling place for His Spirit. It is therefore vital that we not neglect our commitment to the fellowship of believers God has placed us in. This is more than just regular attendance or some form of religious observance; it's what the book of Acts describes as devotion. "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer" (Acts 2:42).

In 1 Corinthians 12 we read that each of us has received a spiritual gift (or gifts) as a means of helping the entire church. Paul then describes the different gifts given to the many parts that make up the body. He speaks of the need for each person to use his or her spiritual gifts for the benefit of the whole body. If we are negligent in exercising the talents God has given, then the whole body suffers. When we are faithful stewards of His gifts, we bring glory to Him.

Insight: Ask God To Reveal To You The Spiritual Gift(S) He Would Have You Use To Encourage Others.

Temple Ruins

"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?" (1 Corinthians 6:19)
Scripture Focus: 1 Peter 2:4-11

While Stationed in Germany I visited Greece. In a guide book to Athens, of the top 10 tourist attractions listed, five are ancient temples, four are museums and one is a cemetery. Of course, the temples visited by millions of tourists in Athens are now no more than ruins, breathtaking as they are.

Paul reminds the early church in Corinth that their bodies, temples of the Holy Spirit, are to honor God. The tragedy for the church today is that many of the Temples of the Holy Spirit have become ruins in great need of restoration. They suffer neglect, apathy, loss of faith, false teaching... However, all is not lost. In 1 Corinthians 6 Paul reminds the believers that they are not their own but have been bought at a great price. We don't have to fret about how we will be put back together again; the Lord has already made a way! Submit the ruins of your life to Jesus, the temple builder and cornerstone Himself. Watch and see how He will restore you into a vibrant worshipping servant once again, a servant with the Spirit of God dwelling inside rather than a spirit of fear or depression.

Insight: God Never Intended The Church To Become A Tourist Attraction But Rather A Living Example Of His Power To Restore And Renew.

Failure Isn't Final
"Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, 'Do you love me?' He said, 'Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.' Jesus said, 'Feed my sheep.'" (John 21:17)

Scripture Focus: John 21:1-19

Within days of receiving the Holy Spirit and his commission from Jesus (John 20:21), Peter is at a loss for what to do. Uncertain, he heads back to fishing with a few other disciples. From what we know, there were at least three skilled fishermen in the boat, yet they toiled all night and caught nothing.

Then Jesus gives a fishing lesson, and they bring in a miraculous haul of fish. At this point Peter recognizes the LORD, and - typically impulsive - abandons ship to swim ashore where Jesus already has a barbecue breakfast prepared. Some scholars have noted that Peter denied Jesus three times after Jesus' arrest, but now Jesus restores him three times with His repeated question of "Do you love me?" The Lord used even Peter's denial as a tool in causing Peter to lean harder on the Rock, Jesus. After Peter's third reply, Jesus confirms, albeit in a veiled manner, that Peter's earlier claim of being ready to die for the LORD would one day come to pass. Both Peter's calling and future were restored.

Insight: Jesus Will Give Us The Chance To Live Up To Our Bold Statements Of Faith. Our Failure Need Never Be Final.

Restored by God's Presence

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." (Psalm 46:1, NASB)

Scripture Focus: Psalm 46

My Jr. High School English teacher disliked redundancy. For example, if a student wrote "very unique" in an essay, she would mark the paper, pointing out that it is either unique or it is not; therefore the word "very" is redundant. I wonder what she would say to the translators of Psalm 46 about God being a "very present help." Surely God is either present or He is not!

But in this Scripture passage we have great comfort through these words. Our heavenly Father is more than just "present." He is with us in the very heart of our lives, an integral part of our life's troubles. He is not a mere bystander. God's being "very present" with us is as different from just "present" as the friend who says, "I'm coming over to help right now," compared to the friend who says, "I'm here if you need me." God didn't just let us know He was there if we ever needed Him. He said, "I'm coming over to help right now." He did that by sending His Son, our Savior, Jesus, right into this world and into our very lives.

Insight: God Promises Never To Leave Us Or Forsake Us. Keep Watch, Lest You Fail To Acknowledge His Very Presence In Your Life.

Winter of My Life

You know. . . Time has a way of moving quickly
And catching you unaware of the passing years.
It seems just yesterday that I was young,
Just married and embarking on my new life with my mate.
And yet in a way, it seems like eons ago,
And I wonder where all the years went.
I know that I lived them all...
And I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams...
But, here it is... The winter of my life and it catches me by surprise...
+Dev+ Michael D. Inman - Page 9 Download?mid=2%5f0%5f0%5f1%5f42551%5fAPJVimIAAIb9UHEYow8IUU%2bgXJ4&pid=2
How did I get here so fast?
Where did the years go and where did my youth go?
I remember well...
Seeing older people through the years and thinking that those
Older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off
That I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like...
But, here it is...
My friends are retired and getting grey...
They move slower and I see an older person now.
Some are in better and some worse shape than me...
But, I see the great change...
Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant...
But, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those
Older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd be.
+Dev+ Michael D. Inman - Page 9 Download?mid=2%5f0%5f0%5f1%5f42551%5fAPJVimIAAIb9UHEYow8IUU%2bgXJ4&pid=2
Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day!
And taking a nap is not a treat anymore... it's mandatory!
'Cause if I don't on my own free will... I just fall asleep where I sit!
And so, now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared
For all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability
To go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!!
But, at least I know, that though the winter has come,
And I'm not sure how long it will last...
This I know, that when it's over... Its over...
+Dev+ Michael D. Inman - Page 9 Download?mid=2%5f0%5f0%5f1%5f42551%5fAPJVimIAAIb9UHEYow8IUU%2bgXJ4&pid=2
Yes, I have regrets.
There are things I wish I hadn't done...
Things I should have done, but indeed,
There are many things I'm happy to have done.
It's all in a lifetime...
So, if you're not in your winter yet...
Let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think.
Whatever you would like to accomplish in your life, please do it quickly!
Don't put things off too long!!
Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today,
As you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not!
You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life...
So, live for today and say all the things you want your loved ones to remember...
And hope they appreciate and love you for all the things
You have done for them in all the years past!!
Life is a gift to you.

The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after.
Make it a fantastic one.
~ And, Remember ~

Restored by God's Mercy
"Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. " (Psalm 51:1)
Scripture Focus: Psalm 51

To understand the background to Psalm 51, read 1 Samuel 11-12. Here you will find the account of King David's adulterous affair with Bathsheba, the murder that followed, his encounter with the prophet Nathan, and finally the confession of his sins. Psalm 51 records David's cry to God for mercy, compassion, cleansing, purification, renewal, forgiveness, and restoration from this incident.

The most fundamental restoration of our soul comes when we acknowledge our sinfulness before God and ask for His forgiveness and cleansing. In 1 John 1:8-9 we read, "If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. "

Only the Creator God can create in us a new heart and renew a right spirit within us. Only the merciful and compassionate God can remove the guilt and shame of our sins and restore our relationship with Him. He is faithful, and He will do it.

Insight: Confession Doesn't End At Salvation. Continue To Take Time To Confess Your Sins And Then Accept The Forgiveness That God Has Promised.

"I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten - the great locust and the young locust, the other locusts and the locust swarm - my great army that I sent among you." (Joel 2:25)
Scripture Focus: Joel 2

When I returned to music ministry after a gap of three years, I was often reminded of the Lord's promise to His chosen people that He would repay them for the years the locusts had eaten. I wondered if He might do the same for me. In time I did come back to my music, to leading songs in church, and even to having a solo concert, realizing a new depth in my ministry. Now a powerful message of challenge, hope and comfort borne out of the reality of the darkest struggles was evident.

Re-read the last five words of Joel 2:25: "that I sent among you." Are you as struck by that phrase as I am? All along the locusts had been sent by God! Could it really be that my depression was sent by God as a tool in His reformation, re-shaping and restoration of my soul? Is there a trial - a valley of the shadow of death - that you are experiencing now? Consider God's providence for you. Be comforted and awed to know that it will be used not only for your good, but also for His glory.

A Daily Exercise Plan

"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day." (2 Corinthians 4:16)
Scripture Focus: 2 Corinthians 4

A simple yet profound line from one of the songs I learned as a child in Sunday School is "Read your Bible, pray every day, and you'll grow." Our souls need nourishment: God's Word is our food and drink. Prayer is the air we breathe.

Paul reminds the Corinthians and us that the treasure of the gospel is held in perishable containers: weak bodies. Any spiritual growth observed in our lives is all for God's glory. Paul doesn't hold back in detailing the challenges ahead for the church. He himself was pressed on every side by troubles, perplexed, hunted down, knocked down, suffering and living under constant danger of death. The outlook for his readers was similar.

If these descriptions sound alien to us in our comfortable Western existence, perhaps we need a spiritual health check. Have we stopped growing? Christians in the persecuted church daily experience the life described by Paul and yet can say, "Our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all."

Hosanna! Hosanna!
"The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, 'Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!'" (Matthew 21:9)

Scripture Focus: Matthew 21:1-11
The psalmist, Asaph, in Psalm 80 uses a repeated refrain: "Restore us, O God; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved." Salvation and restoration go together.

Many in the crowd who shouted "Hosanna!" (meaning "save us") thought that Jesus was a political Messiah coming to restore the kingdom to Israel. Even the apostles echoed these thoughts prior to the Ascension (Acts 1:6).

However, the salvation promised through Christ is a spiritual matter concerning the life or death of the soul. When the birth of Jesus was explained to Joseph by the angel, he was told, "you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21).

And finally, in Revelation 7 we read of a heavenly consummation of Jesus' earthly Triumphal Entry. "They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: 'Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.'" May we join that celebration, too!

There is a church mission statement I love from a Los Angeles church called Mosaic: "We are a community of followers of Jesus Christ, committed to live by faith, to be known by love, and to be a voice of hope. The name of our community comes from the diversity of our members and from the symbolism of a broken and fragmented humanity which can become a work of beauty under the artful hands of God. We welcome people from all walks of life, regardless of where they are in their spiritual journey. Come to Mosaic, and discover how all the pieces can fit together!"

What a fitting metaphor for the Christian who has known brokenness and sorrow. The next time you see a mosaic, see yourself in one of the broken pieces. Maybe you feel discarded and trampled on, or perhaps you think you have little, if anything, to offer. My prayer is that it be God's will to put the pieces back together again. May we acknowledge that He is restoring and renewing us, ultimately presenting us without fault as the bride of Christ.

Insight: Take Time To Thank God For The Diversity Of People In Your Church And Ask Him To Give You A Glimpse Of The Bigger Picture.

Anyone who has visited ancient sites in the Middle East, Central Asia or the former Greek and Roman Empires will have seen wonderful examples of the mosaic art form. What inspired the first mosaic artists to assemble together broken stones, shells and pieces of clay that others would have discarded or trampled on? Perhaps they could see what others had missed: though something is broken doesn't mean it is useless. Even if it cannot be restored to its former state, the hands of a true craftsman combine it with other broken things to make something of beauty and even great value.

God, the Ultimate Craftsman, takes great delight in restoring us from the brokenness brought about by sin. However, the damage caused by the ravages of everyday life leads to further need for His restorative care. He has called us to be part of the church, the body of Christ, where we find ourselves side by side with other broken people. Together we make a work of art of great value... so valuable that God gave all He had to purchase us.

Insight: Remember That "The Lord Is Close To The Brokenhearted And Saves Those Who Are Crushed In Spirit" (Psalm 34:18).

"If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free." (John 8:31B-32)
Scripture Focus: John 14:15-31

Does what we know about Bible have real value in our lives? I know in my head that God is perfect, His Word is true and His promises are faithful. But sometimes knowing is not enough. I know that "God heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds" (Psalm 147:3) and "The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18). I know Jesus said, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). Peter encourages us to "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7), yet sometimes knowing these things is not enough.

There comes a point when the believer in Jesus Christ needs to put all of the head knowledge to work in the heart. A preacher once said that Growth=Knowledge+ Application. However, knowing the formula is not enough either. It is of utmost value to know the truths of the Bible; but it is the Truth of Jesus Christ reigning in your life - changing you from the inside out - that sets you free.

Insight: Stop Wrestling With All The Knowledge You Have Of Jesus Christ, And Put On The Love And Character Of Jesus Instead.

"Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up." (Psalm 71:20)
Scripture Focus: Psalm 71

For many Christians, depression is a taboo subject, one we just don't like to talk about. But the troubled, fearful, grieving soul is nothing unusual in the Psalms and throughout the Bible. Similarly, depression and despair are never far from our lives today. In 2004 my friend was diagnosed with depression. he said he was grateful to both a family doctor and a counsellor who didn't judge him, but did all they could to help him put one foot in front of the other and find a way forward.

The righteous man Job in the Old Testament sunk deep into depression and misery as he saw his family, home, possessions and health fall from him. "It is a land as dark as midnight, a land of utter gloom where confusion reigns and the light is dark as midnight" (Job 10:22, NLT). I know that personally to be a good description of depression.

Thank God I also know that Jesus is the light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. We may not understand His timing, but He promises to shine His light upon us and yet again bring us up if we continue to look to Him.

Insight: Just As Sure As Night Follows Day, We Are All Likely To Know Times Of Darkness. However, Don't Despair - The Dawn Will Come Again!

"For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." (Ephesians 2:10)

Recently in the UK there have been several TV programs about building restoration. Some are relatively small-scale projects where a derelict barn, workshop, or warehouse is converted into a family home. However, there has been an annual series in which the public votes on which ancient building is restored to its former glory. Apart from funding, the greatest challenge is finding suitably qualified craftsmen to accurately and sensitively carry out the work: there aren't too many medieval stonemasons and such around these days!

God is the architect, designer, master craftsman and creator of each and every one of us. He holds the patent and the copyright. "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:13-14). Unless we return to the original builder, then we are entrusting our souls to unqualified, unskilled and ultimately incompetent hands. May our creation in Christ Jesus spur our broken spirits on to a life rich in praise for Him.

Insight: If You Are Feeling Broken And In Need Of Repair, Put Yourself In The Hands Of The Craftsman Who Made You, The Creator And Lord.

"And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:19)
Scripture Focus: John 10:1-18

The LORD, David's own shepherd, restores his soul, we read in his 23rd Psalm. David knew from experience that a shepherd must protect the flock from predators, lead them through dangerous terrain and tend to their needs. The lessons he'd learned as a boy would be applied to his battles as a man.

David acknowledges that the LORD, his shepherd, has provided for all his needs. He has been brought to a peaceful, green valley with a gentle stream running through it. He has been made to lie down and rest. However, it is more than a renewal of his physical strength that is given; it is restoration for his soul that he receives.

Not only does our Great Shepherd provide for our daily physical needs, He is passionately concerned about the state of our souls. It is only in looking to Him for protection from the enemy, allowing Him to lead us through hard times, that we will find our souls repaired and renewed once more. The glorious riches of Jesus will fill up even the most destitute and impoverished soul.

Insight: Since Our Good Shepherd Has Given Everything To Save Us, Even Laying Down His Life, Let's Rest And Be Restored By That Good News.

"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake." (Psalm 23:1-3)

Scripture Focus: Psalm 23:1-3

Psalm 23 is a much loved, oft read piece of poetry from Scripture. Its comfort has been real to the joyful as well as the troubled.

The psalmist was the shepherd who became king. However, the true author and inspiration is the King who is The Great Shepherd. Our focus this month will be on one phrase from this beautiful psalm: "He restores my soul."

We will examine the richness, complexity and power contained within these words as we ask God to bring them to life in us. Just breaking down that sentence grammatically shows us the focus of the act of restoring our souls. "He" is the subject; "restores" is the action; "my" tells "whose"; and "soul" is the object. Looking closely at these will reveal the very heart of what Jesus Christ has done for us: living for, dying for, and redeeming our souls. It's no surprise to God that our souls are in need of restoration. The challenge for us as individuals is to acknowledge our need and accept Christ's restorative healing for us.

Scripture Focus: Rev 22:13-21

Let your mind see Jesus and the Holy Spirit and Jesus' glorified bride, the church, standing beside a flowing river. With one voice they say to all who are weary and hopeless, "Come. Come to the river for cleansing and renewal. Come to the trees that produce fruit to nourish in every season. Come to the trees whose leaves are marvelous for the healing of the nations. There is no disease of the spirit that some leaf of grace cannot heal." Can you imagine that glorious sight? All is prepared. And - how marvelous the thought - all is free and mercifully available day in and day out. This is what we have to look forward to! Is it any wonder John says, "Amen. Come, Lord Jesus"?

Jesus offers the appeal, the Holy Spirit urges belief and the host of believers who make up the Bride offer clear and convincing testimony to the fact that nothing has been left undone. Believer, put your trust in Jesus. Fall before the Lamb, as John did, and allow the fullness of Jesus to flow into your life, moment by moment.

As Revelation opened, John obviously had many questions, all good ones. I assume he was concerned about what would happen in the future in light of the trials of the moment. As the Lamb broke the seven seals, John's questions as to when went largely unanswered. The revelation focused not on a time, but on Jesus Christ Himself, the Lamb of God. We have now come to the end of the revelation and, once again, our attention is drawn, not to a timetable, but to the Lamb.

From the throne and the Lamb a virtual river gushed out. Our mind goes back to when the soldiers pierced Jesus side, producing a rush of His life blood and water. That river of salvation ran down the center of main street, offering cleansing, refreshment and renewal.

Its properties were marvelous. No matter how many sins it cleansed or how many sinners bathed in it, it flowed on as clear as crystal. Furthermore, it continues to gush forth with power and determination without interruption, ever fresh, ever new for you and me today.

"It is done... To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life." (Revelation 21:6)

Scripture Focus: Isaiah 55

Isaiah portrays Jesus as a water seller. I've become so used to water coming to my home through pipes that it's hard to imagine someone (especially Jesus!) carrying water, crying, "Come, buy!" Yet it would have been common in the past when the wells ran dry.

Jesus knows we need spiritual water to survive, so He went to great lengths to obtain it for us. We can never calculate its cost, for He bought it with His own blood. Think of what heaven went through to make the Living Water available. But for God, no cost was too high.

Jesus offers us the water of life. What will it cost us to get it? Actually, we cannot afford one single cup of it. All our accumulated merit could not buy a drop, let alone a daily supply. Hear the voice of Jesus as He approaches your house: "Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy...without money and without cost" (Isaiah 55:1). It's grace unlimited for thirsty sinners like us. The Living Water is free.

Apocalyptic literature certainly does stir the imagination. I try to apply some meaning to every "horn," "beast," etc. that make up the kaleidoscope of symbols in Revelation. Rarely does John interpret a symbol for us. The text creates an amazing flow of images, something very "other worldly" yet close to home at the same time.

After all Revelation's battles, scourges and complicated intrigues, after the numbers have been set out, the story reaches its climax: Jesus Christ is King of all kings and Lord of all lords. His reign knows no end. Remember, the Lamb was not declared King because He overcame all other powers; He overcame all other powers because He was and always will be King of kings!

It may have looked to John as though Caesar was more powerful than the Lamb. But when all the "Caesars" on the earth are forgotten, when the new heavens and earth appear, we will see Jesus as He is, unchanging forever. Let's grasp that truth with John and live in its glorious hope, even in this world of sin.

"His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance." (Revelation 1:16B)
Scripture Focus: Matthew 17:1-8

Before going up to Jerusalem for the last time, Jesus took John (and Peter and James) to a mountain where the glory of God lit His face as the sun in its brilliance. Moses and Elijah appeared. Then a dazzling cloud enshrouded all, and God's voice was heard. "This is my son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." John and his friends fell facedown to the ground when Jesus came to them with a touch and "Do not be afraid." Just think of it: the glorified Son of Man put a hand on John with a touch that revived his spirit.

Next came the devastation of Jesus dying on a Roman cross. John saw Jesus transfigured again, not by brilliant light but by His own blood and the darkness that covered everything for three dreadful hours.

John on Patmos was passing through yet another time of disturbing darkness. And once again he saw Jesus, exactly as He was on that mountain years ago, now shining brighter than all the suns in the universe. Jesus still shines in brilliance today for us through our darkest times.

Again John heard the voice of Jesus, the one he'd listened to intently for over three years as a young man was still powerful, continual, fresh and, above all, dependable. Sometimes when we are going through the dark night of trials, the Word seems dull, if not dead. The promises that we cling to sting us in our despair. The cry of a revived believer calls out desperately to hear a word of assurance from the Lord.

As we repent of our unbelief, we see Jesus again and wonder how we could have possibly doubted every word or promise that Jesus spoke. This is the Jesus who loved us so much that He died for us. Did He promise something that He cannot fulfill? Perish the thought! We melt in repentant faith: "I doubted for a moment, but I now believe - every word."

The words of Jesus are as powerful today as on the Mount of the Beatitudes or in the Upper Room before the crucifixion. And His words after the resurrection pound in our ears: "Go and make disciples of all nations."

I have walked through many a "blazing furnace" in my time. Passing through fires of affliction is no fun. Three young Hebrews found that out in Babylon where they were literally thrown into a furnace, one so hot that it killed any who came near it. But for these three, their feet were not even seared because "Someone" entered the fire with them. They were saved from certain death. Look at this amazing "Someone," His feet "like bronze glowing in a furnace"!

Jesus passed through the fires of suffering when He atoned for our sins on the Cross. He suffered anguish in spirit, soul and body in His sacrifice of self. His feet were in the fire. Now, with those same burnished feet, He walks beside us through a world of sin and destruction. "When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze" (Isaiah 43:2).

Your own suffering has eternal meaning because Christ suffers with us. Walking with Jesus in revival is a fellowship of suffering as well as unspeakable joy.

What he saw cried out for explanation. "Doesn't God see the distress? Doesn't He care that His sheep are being slaughtered? Has God fallen asleep while we suffer?"

Along with John we must look into the face of the risen Jesus. Consider those eyes full of blazing light. Jesus never sleeps. He never blinks. He sees everything, a thousand times more clearly than we do. Look again at those eyes. They burn with wrath as He sees the evil in this world. They are seared by pain as He sees the blood of every martyr and the sorrow of every widow. Look carefully, and you will glimpse the flow of tears from those eyes. He sees and feels more deeply than you or I can imagine. Jesus is your all-seeing Lord and Savior. He knows the state you are in, and He loves you more than words can tell. These truths would comfort John and us as well.

Jesus is Almighty

"and among the lampstands was someone dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest." (Revelation 1:13)

Scripture Focus: Psalm 24

When I see a golden breastplate, I envision a Roman Emperor. This breastplate was not for protection, but was a dazzling sign of the authority and power of the Emperor and the Empire. Yet John wasn't seeing the Roman Emperor in his vision; he saw "Someone" who served God and the saints day and night. Was the "Someone" reminding John of Jesus' words heard some 60 years earlier? Before He was taken up in the clouds, Jesus declared, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me" (Matthew 28:18).

Thinking of the wrath of the Emperor falling with fury upon the defenseless Christ followers, John must have questioned who held all authority, Caesar or Jesus? Life with Jesus is a walk of faith, not of sight. When all evidence cries out that what Jesus said is not true, a humble child of faith sees Jesus as the Almighty One despite argument to the contrary. The "Someone" with the golden sash of authority is Jesus Christ, the One to whom all authority has been given. We can bank on that!

Jesus is on Duty
“And among the lampstands was someone dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet" (Revelation 1:13)
Scripture Focus: Hebrews 9:23-28

John saw "Someone" moving about in the heavenly tabernacle, tending lamps, putting living bread on the table, interceding for people, offering sacrifices to atone for sin. At first John saw the priest as only a "someone." Then it became clear He was Jesus!

I, too, often take Him for granted or ignore Him as other things crowd in. Theoretically, I do not doubt that He is there, but too often He is only a concept or a memory. As my eyes focus on my hurts, my disappointments, my sins, my religious rituals, my friends, etc., Jesus becomes a "someone," and I have no idea of what He is doing in my life.

I can get on without seeing Jesus, but then there is no spontaneous, infectious, surprising joy in me. God must get my attention, somehow - maybe by suffering - to show me that the "Someone" is my life is my all in all. He is Jesus Christ, and He has one thing in mind for me: fellowship with the Father, without sin, guilt, shame or remorse. He died for that and lives forever to revive my spirit.

Jesus, Tending the Lamps

"I saw seven golden lampstands and among the lampstands someone" (Revelation 1:12B-13A)

Scripture Focus: John 14:1-19

For years my wife and I have been praying for a particular need, yet we see no change. When we are tempted to give up, I think of John on Patmos. His seven churches were undergoing a heart wrenching test. Roman swords dripped with the blood of the followers of Jesus, and John must have wondered why does He do nothing to stop this?

John was in for a surprise. In his vision, he saw seven lamps burning, the only lights flickering in the darkness. It dawned on John that those seven lamps were his seven churches for whom he prayed constantly. Each was alight!

Then he saw someone tending the lamps. Knowing that lamps need oil, the Someone had a pitcher full of olive oil. With a knife He carefully trimmed anything that might hinder the full flame of each lamp. The hands that held the pitcher and the knife bore fresh wounds of eternal love.

Why do I doubt that my Jesus cares what's on my heart? When the curtain is pulled back, I see Him busy working on me, keeping me alight for Him.

Jesus, Alive and Well

"I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me and when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and someone 'like a son of man'..." (Revelation 1:12-13)
Scripture Focus: John 20:1-18

Our dear elder, John, was troubled. Blocking out the world, he entered into the Spirit on the Lord's Day. This is the heart of revival. When all the books are read and closed, all the sermons heard and digested, all the good advice listened to and followed, and still there's no peace have you forgotten the God of mercy whose greatest delight is showing Jesus?

A voice behind John broke the silence. He knew the voice was the help he needed, so he turned to face it. A glance is not enough; a full turn is required. When I meet God, it must be face to face with me turning from everything else and giving my whole self to Him. In the words "turn around" is a hint of another key word John uses: "repent."

John found himself in the Holy Place where the lampstands dispelled the darkness, and he saw only light. He may have thought, "Can my darkness be broken?" Yes, John! Moving among the lampstands was a person, the one whose voice he'd heard. John would discover that the "Someone" was none other than Jesus Christ.

Insight: When Your Spirit Is Perplexed, Stop Examining The Problems. Look Up And Away. You'll See Jesus Come Into Focus Again.
