UN Damns Israel, Barely Addresses ISIS, North Korea, or Syria
Israeli officials are outraged by the blatant bias of the UN Human Rights Committee, which has condemned Israel for more violations than the rest of the world combined.
A meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Monday wound up spending six hours discussing Israel, and only three hours on every other global human rights violation.
Since the Human Rights Council's establishment in 2006, it has condemned Israel for over 60 violations - more than every other country in the world combined. To provide a foil: Sudan, which is notorious for grievous violations of human rights resulting in hundreds of thousands of displacements and deaths, has only prompted "deep concern" from the UNHRC.
The council is currently debating five new resolutions against Israel for the month of March, in addition to one Iranian violation and one Syrian violation. According to the dictates of Agenda Item 7, issues over Israel are up for discussion at every single UNHRC meeting; this is the only mandate of its kind for any country.
Officials were extremely upset by the blatant show of bias, claiming the group has an "obsession with Israel." Former Minister of Finance Yair Lapid expressed his outrage at a rally in Geneva, which constituted the first protest to occur during an Item 7-sanctioned meeting.
"What they are doing here today, in the United Nations Human Rights Council is pure, old style, anti-Semitism," he stated. "Anti-Semites, in this era, never admit that they are anti-Semitic. They always give it a different name. They say it’s something else. So we learned, in the past two thousand years, that it doesn’t matter what they say. It only matters what they do."
Lapid provided a list of human rights transgressions happening in other nations, including the staggering death tolls resulting from conflicts in Syria, Iraq, Libya, and Afghanistan, and the violent rapes and overall treatment of women in African and Middle Eastern countries. "The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is only ranked 49th in the number of casualties in conflicts across the world. But there is only one country – only one – which the rules of Human Rights Council dictate has a special agenda item."
He further accused the council of flagrantly showing far less concern for Israeli and Jewish lives than the lives of terrorists. "In the past six months terrorists have stalked the streets of Israel, shooting at our children, stabbing women and the elderly, carrying out car ramming attacks," he said, while the UNHRC "no longer even pretend to be objective. Because they no longer even try to hide the fact that they are anti-Israel, anti-Jews and anti-justice."
The Yesh Atid party chairman voiced a call to the United States to halt their financial contributions to the UN, unless the Human Rights Council begins to treat Israel with the same fairness and equanimity they exhibit toward every other country.
"I call upon the members of the United States Congress – the US is the largest funder of the United Nations, why do you allow American money to be used by an organization which continually provides encouragement for fundamentalist Islamic terror?"
