The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude 2.6 earthquake happened at the Florida-Alabama border just before midnight Wednesday, just east of Century, Florida. That’s in the extreme northwest corner of the state.

A magnitude 2.6 quake should not cause any damage, according to USGS. However, earthquakes are extremely rare for Florida. The last earthquake in Florida was in 2006, off the Gulf of Mexico. It was a magnitude of 5.9. In fact, the last 5 earthquakes all took place in the Gulf of Mexico between 1992 and 2006.

As the constant flow of molten metals in the outer core changes over time, it alters the external magnetic field. (Express) – A Massive 7.1 magnitude earthquake has hit Peru, triggering mass evacuations amid tsunami fears. The Pacific Ring of Fire has been seen a mass of activity this morning, as some 46 earthquakes have shaken countries around the World. The most dangerous earthquake in Peru has sparked evacuation, as the United States Geological Survey (USGS) was initially concerned there may be a tsunami.

(Express) – Alaska has again been hit by earthquakes after a magnitude 4.4 aftershock hit the southcentral area of Alaska on Monday morning. The magnitude 4.4 aftershock is one of the largest to hit Alaska in recent weeks. The USGS first classified the temblor as a magnitude 3.8. The last time it was struck by the Big One was in San Francisco in 1906. The earthquake killed around 3,000 people after ripping through 296 miles (477 km) of the San Andreas fault line. But John Vidale, director of the Southern California Earthquake Centre, warned there is no way of predicting when the Big One will hit.

(Express) – The Dukono volcano in Indonesia has erupted over the past few days, ejecting columns of ash high into the air, just months after violent activity from Mount Agung shook the nation. Indonesia’s Mount Dukono – based on Halmahera island to the east of the country – has been ejecting ash over the last day, with a continuous fog exploding from the main crater, according to Indonesia’s volcanic survey. Indonesia’s 127 active volcanoes all pose significant risks to some five million people living nearby.

Mount Agung alone killed more than 1,000 people in March last year. While Mount Dukono is not quite as dangerous yet, it is one of the country’s most active volcanoes. The PVMBG (Volcanic Survey of Indonesia) has put Dukono on a level two ‘alert’ as the volcano ejects 7000ft of ash. The service has warned people should not travel near the volcano, and an aviation notice has been issued for any nearby aircraft, advising pilots not to fly.

(WP) – A group of top hurricane experts, including several federal researchers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, published striking new research Thursday suggesting that hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean have grown considerably worse, and climate change is part of the reason why. The study focused on rapid intensification, in which hurricanes may grow from a weak tropical storm or Category 1 status to Category 4 or 5 in a brief period. They found that the trend has been seen repeatedly in the Atlantic in recent years.

It happened before Hurricane Harvey struck Texas and before Hurricane Michael pummeled the Gulf Coast with little warning last fall. Hurricane Michael, for example, transformed from a Category 1 into a raging Category 4 in the span of 24 hours. The study, published in Nature Communications, describes its conclusion in blunt language, finding that the Atlantic already has seen “highly unusual” changes in rapid hurricane intensification, compared to what models would predict from natural swings in the climate. That led researchers to conclude that climate change played a significant role.

OPINION (The Sun) – A global heatwave in the next five years is set to see rising temperatures bringing more extreme weather disasters, experts have warned. The last four years have been among the hottest on record – with 2018 experiencing hurricanes, floods, droughts and extreme heat. Average global surface temperatures for 2019 to 2023 are forecast to be between 1.03C and 1.57C above the levels seen before the Industrial Revolution, the experts said. If temperatures over the next five years are in line with the predictions, it

will make the decade between 2014 and 2023 the hottest run of years in records reaching back to 1850. Professor Adam Scaife, head of the long-range prediction at the Met Office, said: “2015 was the first year that global annual average surface temperatures reached 1C above pre-industrial levels, and the following three years have all remained close to this level. “The global average temperature between now and 2023 is predicted to remain high, potentially making the decade from 2014 the warmest in more than 150 years of records.”

(JPL) – Last September’s major earthquake near Palu City on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi was a rare supershear event, a new study has found. Fewer than 15 of these superfast-moving, extra-powerful earthquakes have ever been identified. In these events the rupture, or propagating crack, moves along a fault extremely rapidly, causing the up-and-down or side-to-side waves that shake the ground – called seismic shear waves – to pile up and intensify. The result is much stronger shaking than in a slower quake. Researchers at UCLA; NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California; and other

institutions analyzed high-spatial-resolution observations of the seismic waves caused by the devastating temblor, along with satellite radar and optical images,to characterize the speed, timing and extent of the magnitude 7.5 Palu earthquake that occurred on Sept. 28, 2018. They calculated that the quake ruptured at a steady speed of 9,171 mph (14,760 kph), with the main shock continuing for almost a minute. Earthquakes typically rupture at about 5,600 to 6,700 mph (9,000 to 10,800 kph). Processing the satellite images, the researchers found that the two sides of the 93-mile-long (150-kilometer-long) fault slipped by about 16 feet (5 meters) – a surprisingly large amount.

Ten earthquakes strike the coast of Northern California in less than 24 hours
(SF Gate) -Ten earthquakes of preliminary magnitudes between 3.0 and 4.5 struck off the coast of Northern California between Saturday and Sunday, the United States Geological Survey reports. The series of earthquakes rumbled beneath the Pacific Ocean, between 3 miles and 27 miles west of Petrolia in Humboldt County. The first earthquake struck early Saturday morning at a magnitude of 4.3, while a second earthquake, of 3.2 magnitude, rumbled about 30 minutes later.

Three additional earthquakes hit between 4:30 p.m. and 5:38 p.m. Saturday in the same area, registering magnitudes between 2.9 and 3.6, USGS reported. A 3.0-magnitude earthquake struck that night, at 11:37 p.m. The geological activity continued into Sunday. USGS reported four earthquakes near Petrolia between 2:18 p.m. and 4:05 p.m. The earthquakes ranged in magnitude from 3.4 to 4.5.

(NBC News) – A strong earthquake struck Friday near the coast of southern Mexico, causing tall buildings to sway hundreds of miles away in the capital. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the quake had a
magnitude of 6.6 and was centered about 10 miles from Tapachula in the southern state of Chiapas. It struck at a depth of 40 miles. The quake was also felt in nearby Guatemala and farther away in El Salvador.

(South China Morning Post) – Japan’s social media has gone into nervous overdrive following the discovery of a number of deep-sea fish traditionally thought to be harbingers of natural disaster. On Monday, an oarfish measuring nearly four meters from snout to tail was found tangled in a fishing net off the port of Imizu, in the north-coast prefecture of Toyama. The fish was already dead but was later taken to the nearby Uozu Aquarium to be studied. Two more of the slender, snake-like fish were discovered in Toyama Bay nine

days earlier. A record four oarfish was found in Toyama Bay in 2015 but that could be surpassed this year. The species – characterized by long silver bodies and red fins – usually inhabit deep waters and the fish are rarely seen from the surface, although legend has it that when oarfish rise to shallow waters, disaster is near. Even the species’ traditional Japanese name, ryugu no tukai – which translates as “messenger from the palace of the dragon king” –
