New Al-Qaeda Magazine Calls on Terrorists to Derail Trains

In a 2014 statement famously underestimating the threat of ISIS, then-President Barack Obama referred to the group as Al-Qaeda’s “JV Team.” In high school and college sports, a JV player is a member of the team who doesn’t play in official competitions.

In light of the death toll the group would cause in following years, the “JV Team” comment is one that would better have described al-Qaeda.

While Obama was in office, 75 percent of proposed airstrikes against ISIS were shot down by the Obama Administration. Since Trump took office, drone strikes are up over 400%, and one-third of all ISIS territorial losses have occurred under the short months of the Trump presidency.

As their caliphate crumbles, so does the propaganda. And as their influence wanes, al-Qaeda is looking to boost their market share in the propaganda game. While ISIS hasn’t issued a copy of their magazine “Dabiq” in over a year, al-Qaeda is out with a new issue of their propaganda magazine “Inspire,” which calls on jihadists to derail American trains. Attacking American infrastructure is a common theme throughout the entire issue of the magazine, as you can see in the pictures below:

And that brings us to the issue’s main focus, an article on train derailment.

While Inspire is infamous for including instructions on bomb making in their magazines (the Boston Marathon bombers were among those educated by the magazine), this issue includes instructions on how to build homemade train derailment devices.

Hours after reports of the new Inspire magazine were published, the New York Police Department Counterterrorism Bureau tweeted a series of messages.

While ISIS has been the terror group dominating the headlines, we can’t forget the risk that other groups pose.

NYC’s Metropolitan Transit Authority revealed that an explosion and a breach in the many subway tunnels that run under Manhattan’s East River could shut down the tunnels for years, which former MTA security official Nick Casale said could result in the loss of thousands of lives.
“The water of the East River would start pouring in, and it would not stop,” Casale said. “And at some point, we would have a catastrophic collapse; the report estimated 19,000 casualties.”

A study was actually conducted by the US Army 32 years ago. The secret “vulnerability tests” in the New York subway system showed a chilling vulnerability that made the subway system the perfect location for a particular type of attack. Back then the possibility of a biological attack was not as great as it is now. We know that terrorists have experimented with biological and chemical agents as weapons.
