Report: Hungary launching ‘Stop Soros’ legislation to fight Soros’ influence in government
Central European University / CCL
George Soros recently vowed to destroy the nationalism surging in Europe — and it looks like the nationalists aren’t going down without a fight.
In the latest development of its war on open borders, Hungary laid out “Stop Soros” legislation on Wednesday to clamp down on mass illegal immigration.
The Hungarian government reportedly plans to tax non-government organizations that facilitate illegal immigration.
The legislation could also prevent supporters of illegal immigration from entering the country, including Soros himself.
“Stop Soros” legislation
“Illegal mass immigration is a problem that affects Europe as a whole, posing serious security risks,” a government position paper on the legislation said.
The legislation is the latest measure in a government effort to limit illegal immigration to the country. Hungary’s leader, Viktor Orban, has largely blamed the mass immigration on Soros.
The legislation would require some non-government organizations who “support illegal immigration” to register with the state. Government spokesperson Zoltan Kovacs, who named the legislation, said that foreign donations to those organizations would be taxed at 25 percent.
The bills could also bar foreign citizens who support illegal immigration from passing through Hungary’s borders. Third-country nationals in Hungary could also face restraining orders, Kovacs added.
“If Soros is found to have engaged in such activity, meaning he organizes illegal immigration, then the rules will apply to him,” Kovacs said.
The legislation is scheduled to be released for public discussion on Thursday.
Orban-Soros fight
Government billboards attacking the progressive financier started popping up in Hungary in 2017, warning Hungarians about Soros’s alleged plans to resettle millions of refugees into Europe. Soros, a Hungarian Jew, has accused Orban of anti-Semitism and described the campaign as “distortion and lies” meant to scapegoat the billionaire.
Soros, who runs the Open Society Foundations (OSF), supports open borders and the resettlement of refugees in Europe. His name has become a byword for globalism in European nations where right-wing populism is thriving, like Hungary.
Hungarian media reported that Orban plans to bar Soros from entering the country. The billionaire philanthropist has U.S. and Hungarian citizenship.
For his part, Orban has repeatedly clashed with the European Union over his nativist, eurosceptic stances. His government was challenged by the European Commission last year over a law requiring non-government organizations that receive funding from abroad to register with the state.
He is expected to win a third term in a general election on April 8.
