A squatter who ruined a Remembrance Sunday event by setting off fireworks into a crowd of veterans has today been jailed for 16 weeks.
Stuart Potts let off two fireworks as the Last Post ended and hundreds of people stood observing the two minutes' silence for the war dead at the cenotaph in Eccles, Salford, on Sunday.
Potts, squatting in a disused pub across the road from the cenotaph, fired the fireworks while sat on a ledge of a first-floor window.

Wearing military-style camouflage fatigues, the 38-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of throwing a firework in a public place and a public order offence at Manchester Magistrates' Court today.

A former Royal Marine told the court the fireworks 'affected his post-traumatic stress disorder' and said Potts' actions were 'the most disrespectful thing he had witnessed at such an event.'

A crowd of angry veterans soon gathered outside shouting, 'Get him out!' and trying to break the door of the pub down, with others attempting to climb up to the window

eth Pilling, prosecuting, told the court Potts fired two fireworks, the first resulting in loud bangs, and the second a rocket which flew 15ft above the heads of the 300-strong crowd at the event.

A crowd of angry veterans gathered outside the pub window shouting, 'Get him out!' and trying to break the door of the pub down, with others attempting to climb up to the window.

A lone police officer stood blocking the door shouting into his police radio as he struggled to hold the crowd back from getting inside.

When Potts, from Salford, appeared at the window to remonstrate with the crowd, a number of traffic cones were launched at him before he retreated back inside.

Police reinforcements soon arrived and Potts was bundled into a police car which quickly sped away.

udge Mark Hadfield told Potts: 'I question how genuine your remorse is. This appalling behaviour arose out of you being in possession of fireworks.

'Even if you were handed the fireworks, which I doubt, no one in their right mind would think letting them off would be a mark of respect.

'It showed a staggering lack of respect to those being remembered and those attending the event.

'So concerned was the witness at the initial firework, he thought it was gunfire. It had a detrimental affect upon him.'

Potts has 21 previous convictions for 39 offences.

The court heard a statement from an ex-Royal Marine, at the event to place a cross on the cenotaph for a fallen comrade, who said the loud bangs had reminded him of combat and it had affected his post-traumatic stress disorder.

He also said it was the most disrespectful thing he had witnessed at such an event.

Potts has hit the headlines on several occasions in recent times.

He runs the Saving People Shelter Project and previously moved squatters into another Eccles pub in July.

Potts urged Salford council to let the squatters remain in the derelict pub, despite an evacuation order.

In October, footage showed the moment security staff forced the group of squatters out of the pub.
Potts remonstrated with the officials, but was unable to stop the eviction.
The father-of-four revealed in 2017 that he was evicted from his flat after having a breakdown and losing his family.
Together with his then-girlfriend Georgia Twemlow, he set up camp beside a canal in Eccles, Manchester.
The makeshift home boasted a sofa and two chairs and a bed thrown out by a furniture dealer, as well as a tent to shelter from the rain.

Dressed in army-style fatigues, the suspect then appeared at the window to exchange insults with the furious veterans and mourners who had gathered below.

He was then rushed out of the pub to a waiting police car which quickly sped away, protecting him from the wrath of the crowd.
The angry gathering remained at the scene afterwards with more people, who appeared to be squatting at the pub, left inside, as a squad of police officers guarded the entrance.

The Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry joined Prince William and Kate Middleton for the first time tonight since Harry suggested he had drifted apart from his brother and the pair spoke of their struggles with public life in a revealing documentary.

Harry and Meghan were seated in the second row of Royals behind Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his girlfriend Carrie while William and Kate were seated beside the Queen at the Royal Albert Hall in West London for the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance.

In the ITV documentary Harry told Tom Bradby that he and his brother were on 'different paths', and afterwards The Duke of Cambridge was said to be 'worried' about Harry and hopes he and Meghan 'are all right'. That sparked rumours of a rift between the pair.
But The Queen appeared to have gathered the couples together to remember the nation's war dead

Palace officials insisted that there is nothing unusual about the couple being sat so far apart and pointed out they sat in the same place at last year's event.

Courtiers also said that Harry and Meghan arrived separately from William and Kate and were not photographed together because it is customary given that royals arrive in order of precedence to events such as this.

Meghan donned an elegant black fit and flare dress paired with a pair of £621 Deneuve Bow Pointy Toe Pumps at the service - also attended by the Duke of York, Boris Johnson and hundreds of servicemen and veterans.

REMEMBRANCE LEST WE FORGET THE_GREAT_WAR_1914-1918
We remember Armistice Day by wearing the poppy, that has become the iconic symbol of the First World War because it was the only flower to grow in the killing fields of Belgium after four years of trench warfare.
A little known but remarkable story of the First World War was that of the Angels of Mons who helped to protect the British Expeditionary Force. They were outnumbered by the advancing German forces facing almost certain defeat protecting the Belgium town of Mons. This was a case of divine intervention in a dire situation facing the British forces. This story brings to life for us one hundred years on the very real and frightening situation our armed forces faced during the Great War and how the poppy is our reminder today of their lives.
We wear the poppy as a reminder to pray for our armed forces who are risking their lives to protect our liberty that our great-grandparents, grandparents and parents bravely fought to protect. When we observe a two-minute silence on Armistice day we will stop and reflect upon the story of the Angels of Mons. We will remember that we serve a powerful God who is sovereign and who in times of national crisis does intervene in human history by sending his angelic forces to protect us.

REMEMBRANCE LEST WE FORGET SOMME_100
BATTLE OF THE SOMME
The Battle of the Somme, also known as the Somme Offensive, was a battle of the First World War fought by the armies of the British Empire and France against the German Empire. It took place between 1 July and 18 November 1916 on both sides of the upper reaches of the River Somme in France.
Britain's Memory of the Battle of the Somme
The Battle of the Somme saw the first major action of Britain's New Army – the volunteers who had responded to Lord Kitchener's 1914 call for recruits. It was also the first Western Front offensive in which the British Army would take the leading role, rather than acting in support of its French ally. FIRST WORLD WAR  5 Things You Need To Know About The Battle Of The Somme
The Battle of the Somme was one of the most bitterly contested and costly battles of the First World War, lasting nearly five months. Despite this, it is often the first day of the battle that is most remembered. What Was the Battle of the Somme?

The Battle of the Somme (1 July - 18 November 1916) was a joint operation between British and French forces intended to achieve a decisive victory over the Germans on the Western Front. For many in Britain, the resulting battle remains the most painful and infamous episode of the First World War.
