Britain threatens Brexit cliff-edge to force EU trade deal by December 2020

(Worthy News) - Britain set a hard deadline of December 2020 on Tuesday to reach a new trade deal with the European Union, betting that the prospect of another Brexit cliff-edge would force Brussels to move more quickly than usual to seal an accord.

Johnson will use his control of parliament to outlaw any extension of the Brexit transition period beyond 2020 - his boldest move since winning a large majority in last Thursday’s election, and one that spooked financial markets.

In Brussels, officials said the timetable was “rigid” and likely to limit the scope of any deal. [ Source: Reuters (Read More...) ]https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-britain-eu/uk-uses-threat-of-brexit-cliff-edge-to-demand-eu-trade-deal-by-end-of-2020-idUSKBN1YK25G

Britain threatens Brexit cliff-edge to force EU trade deal by December 2020

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain set a hard deadline of December 2020 on Tuesday to reach a new trade deal with the European Union, betting that the prospect of another Brexit cliff-edge would force Brussels to move more quickly than usual to seal an accord.

“Our manifesto made clear that we will not extend the implementation (transition) period and the new Withdrawal Agreement Bill will legally prohibit government agreeing to any extension,” a senior government official said on Tuesday.

Asked if the government would legislate to rule out any extension of the transition beyond 2020, one of Johnson’s most senior ministers, Michael Gove, said: “Exactly, absolutely.”

After the United Kingdom formally leaves the European Union on Jan. 31, it enters a transition period in which it remains an EU member in all but name while both sides try to hammer out a deal on their post-Brexit relationship.

“With absolute clarity on the timetable we are working to, the UK and the EU will be able to get on with it,” Johnson’s spokesman said.

A comprehensive free trade deal would encompass everything from financial services and rules of origin to tariffs, state aid rules and fishing, though the scope and sequencing of any future deal is still up for discussion.

“CLIFF EDGE”
Early EU responses to the move were guarded.

“We haven’t even started those negotiations but this provides for a very rigid time frame, which reflects that certain things will be out of reach,” EU Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis said.

Sabine Weyand, director-general of the EU’s trade department, told a European Policy Centre think tank seminar that negotiations would have to focus on those issues vital to prevent “another cliff-edge situation”.

Weyand said the European Commission, which coordinates trade policy for EU countries, was ready to start negotiations very quickly after Britain formally left the EU on Jan. 31 and was very clear about its priorities.

Any duty-free, quota-free deal would need to be accompanied with guarantees of a level playing field in areas such as state aid and competition, environmental and labour law and taxation.

The pound fell 1.35% to $1.3154 GBP=D3 and to 84.59 pence against the euro EURGBP=D3, levels where it had traded before the scale of Johnson's victory became clear on Thursday evening and prompted strong gains. The pound is down more than 2% from a post-election high above $1.35 against the dollar.

By enshrining in law his campaign promise not to extend the transition period beyond next December, Johnson cuts the amount of time he has to negotiate a trade deal to 10-11 months - and possibly quite a lot less, given the time needed for UK and EU parliamentary approval of any deal.

“GREAT ENERGY”
One EU diplomat said Johnson’s proposed deadline would leave both sides worse off.

“Haste will come at the expense of services and security. This means we are pretty much guaranteed a WTO-style exit,” the diplomat said, referring to World Trade Organization rules that kick into force in the absence of a full-fledged trade deal.

Johnson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen agreed in a phone call on Tuesday to work with “great energy” to get a deal done by the deadline, the prime minister’s spokesman said.

The EU hopes to start the trade talks with Britain by March, while Britain said it wants to start as soon as possible.

Trade deals usually take many years. The fastest major trade pact the EU ever concluded was with South Korea, reached in 2009 after two-and-a-half years of negotiation. It came into force nearly two years after that.

While Johnson’s large majority gives him the flexibility to change the law if he needs to, he is sending a message to the EU - whose leaders have cautioned London that more time would be needed for a comprehensive trade deal.

TALKS WILL BE COMPLEX
If the United Kingdom and the EU fail to strike a deal on their future relationship and the transition period is not extended, trade between the two will be on WTO terms - more burdensome for businesses.

The EU insists it will not seal a trade deal with a large, economically powerful neighbour without solid provisions to guarantee fair competition.

Its demands will focus on environmental and labour standards, as well as state aid rules to ensure Britain cannot offer products on the EU’s single market at unfairly low prices.

The talks will be complex, with industry supply chains in the EU crossing borders multiple times for products such as cars and drugs, requiring agreement on exact rules to designate where products come from and thus what regulations and taxes apply.

At the same time, Britain will face U.S. pressure to loosen rules on its agricultural and food standards as it negotiates a bilateral trade deal with Washington, another Johnson priority.

But this would overstep a red line for the EU, which would then restrict access to its market to protect its own producers.

Johnson and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed in a phone call on Monday to pursue an “ambitious” UK-U.S. free trade agreement.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said on Tuesday such a trade deal was a priority for Washington and that negotiations would be launched as soon as the British “get their objectives agreed to”.

Boris: Election Has Given Tories a ‘Powerful Mandate to Get Brexit Done’

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said that if exit polls are correct and the Conservatives are returned to power with a strong majority, then the new government will have “the chance to respect the democratic will of the British people”.

Exit polls have predicted a Tory victory, gaining seats from Labour, with Sky News predicting as of 4 am on Friday that the Conservatives could have a House of Commons majority of as many as 76 to 88 seats. Johnson was re-elected to his Uxbridge and South Ruislip seat, holding it with 25,351 votes with Labour in second with 18,141.

Whilst still dealing with projections and not wanting to “tempt fate”, Prime Minister Johnson said with optimism: “This one-nation Conservative government has been given a powerful new mandate to get Brexit done.

“And not just to get Brexit done, but to unite this country and to take it forward and to focus on the priorities of the British people,” he said from the counting centre in Uxbridge.

It has almost become a tradition in British politics for fringe parties like the Monster Raving Loony Party to field candidates in handfuls of constituencies during elections, often wildly dressed and gaining votes in the dozens.

In the prime minister’s seat, there was no exception and with typical dry humour, Mr Johnson namechecked his rivals, saying: “I thank my fellow candidates in all their glory, Lord Buckethead, Elmo, and others.”

Prime Minister Johnson continued: “I want to thank the people of this country for turning out in a December election that we didn’t want to call but which I think has turned out to be a historic election that gives us now in this new government, the chance to respect the democratic will of the British people, to change this country for the better, and t0 unleash the potential of the entire people of this country and that is what we will now do.”

Jeremy Corbyn: I will not lead the party in any future general election campaign
Labour leader accepts defeat in General Election defending his 'extremely popular' policies but blames Brexit for the Tory win

Jeremy Corbyn defended his “extremely popular” policies and blamed Brexit for Labour’s devastating defeat as he announced he would stand down as leader after overseeing a “period of reflection”.

With the Tories expected to cruise to a comfortable majority, a deflated Mr Corbyn said it had been a “very disappointing night”, with support crumbling in former Labour heartlands.

Mr Corbyn acknowledged that he had to leave Labour’s helm after suffering a second General Election defeat as he criticised media “attacks” towards himself, his family and the party.

“I want to also make it clear that I will not lead the party in any future general election campaign,” he said as he accepted victory in his Islington North constituency.

“I will discuss with our party to ensure there is a process now of reflection on this result and on the policies that the party will take going forward.

“And I will lead the party during that period to ensure that discussion takes place and we move on into the future.”

The General Election exit poll forecast Labour to shed 52 seats to secure 191 – the party’s poorest result since 1935. And it put the Tories as securing 368 seats, giving the party a majority of 86.

Mr Corbyn defended putting forward a “manifesto of hope” that would help wrong the injustices and inequalities gripping the nation and tackle the climate crisis.

“All of those policies were extremely popular during the election campaign and remain policies that have huge popular support all across this country,” he said in the Sobell Leisure Centre in Holloway, north London.

“However Brexit has so polarised and divided debate in this country it has overridden so much of a normal political debate and I recognise that has contributed to the results that the Labour party has received this evening all across this country.”

Mr Corbyn ran as an outside candidate for the party leadership in 2015 and managed to outlast two Tory prime ministers.

The veteran campaigner, joined at the election count by wife Laura Alvarez and emotional colleagues, said he will remain as MP in the constituency he has represented since 1983.

Labour’s official line was to blame Brexit for dominating the discourse, but the leader was coming under mounting pressure to depart after being cited as being the greater problem on the doorstep.

A leadership battle that could once again expose deep divisions in the party is set to follow.

Jewish Brexit Party candidate, Yosef David, challenged Corbyn in his seat – and could be seen chatting with the Labour leader before the result was announced.

He told Jewish News Corbyn had been “very friendly and personable” and enquired about the campaign.

“I told him that I had suffered a huge amount of antisemitic abuse. I told him that it was about the Rothschilds and conspiracies about Jews running the world and that I had been called a Nazi and a fascist more times then I can remember,” he said.

“He said that this was disgusting and that it’s abhorrent. I told him that I don’t think he is able to empathise with the Jewish community but that I didn’t think he was an antisemite but rather had opened the door to it,” he added.

Jeremy Corbyn has been a central focus of the Jewish community’s concerns over antisemitism – with thousands twice taking to Parliament Square to protest inaction of Jew-hate in the party he leads.

Ruth Smeeth loses seat: ‘This is a disaster – Jeremy Corbyn must resign”
Former Labour politician - who spoke widely about the antisemitism she faced from activists - brands party's performance 'appalling'

Ruth Smeeth furious on Sky News after losing her seat
Labour’s Ruth Smeeth called for Jeremy Corbyn to resign as she faced losing her seat in Stoke-on-Trent North to the Conservatives.

The parliamentary chair of the Jewish Labour Movement branded her loss a “disaster” as she branded her party’s performance “appalling”.

She said: “I have lost, I am no longer MP – this is a disaster. Jeremy Corbyn should resign now before his own count is in.”

Get The Jewish News Daily Edition by email and never miss our top storiesFREE SIGN UP
Speaking on Sky News, she said it was “an appalling night for my constituents and an appalling night for the country.

“The Labour Party has huge huge questions to answer by first of all having this general election when they were so ill prepared for it, but then having this option available to the country, having this platform, having this leadership, and allowing this devastation to hit all of our communities.

“This is an appalling heartbreaking night for the Labour Party – but I’m now much more worried about what happens to my constituents.”

Asked where the finger should be pointed, she replied “Jeremy Corbyn.”

Jeremy Corbyn should announce that he is resigning as leader of the Labour Party from his count today.

He should have gone many many many months ago. I was parliamentary chair of the Jewish Labour Movement. We passed a motion of no confidence in him in April. There is absolutely no justification for why he’s still there. And his personal actions have delivered this result.”

Ms Smeeth has been critical of Mr Corbyn’s handling of antisemitism allegations in the Labour party. She is a Remain supporter in an area which voted to Leave the EU.

Smeeth tallied 14,688 votes, losing to Tory rival Jonathan Gullis with 20,974, a swing of 7 percent.
In the last 12 months, Smeeth gave an impassioned speech in parliament detailing the antisemitic abuse she received.

She was also at the centre of controversy in 2015 when Labour launched Baroness Shami Chakrabarti’s report into antisemitism. Expelled activist Mark Wadsworth, an ally of Jeremy Corbyn, heckled her accusing her of handing out briefing against the Labour leader, leading to her leaving the event in tears.

A statement from the Jewish Labour Movement – a group affiliated to Labour for close to a century – paid tribute to Ruth Smeeth on Friday morning, saying she “represented the best of Labour over these past few years – unafraid and determined to hold the party’s leadership accountable for their failure to tackle antisemitism despite the abuse she’s faced.”

Trump congratulates Boris Johnson, says nations can now 'strike a massive new trade deal'

President Trump on Friday congratulated U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson after the Conservative Party won a majority of seats in the country's Thursday elections, a large boost for Brexit supporters.

"Congratulations to Boris Johnson on his great WIN! Britain and the United States will now be free to strike a massive new Trade Deal after BREXIT. This deal has the potential to be far bigger and more lucrative than any deal that could be made with the E.U. Celebrate Boris!" Trump tweeted in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The Conservatives held onto 358 seats in Parliament, and the main opposition Labour Party kept 203 with 642 of 650 results declared on Friday, Reuters reported.

Johnson called the win, which is the biggest Conservative majority since the era of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, "a powerful new mandate to get Brexit done," according to Reuters.

This is not the first time Trump has promised a trade deal after the U.K. leaves the European Union, which its citizens voted for in a 2016 referendum. In August, Trump promised "a very big trade deal" with the country after a meeting between the leaders at a Group of Seven summit in Biarritz France.

"We're having very good trade talks between the U.K. and ourselves. We're going to do a very big trade deal - bigger than we've ever had with the U.K.," Trump told reporters.

"At some point, they won't have the obstacle of - they won't have the anchor around their ankle because that's what they had," Trump continued, referring to the EU. "So, we're going to have some very good trade talks and big numbers."

Johnson acknowledged that there would be "tough talks" to negotiate a deal, calling for "huge opportunities" for the U.K. to "penetrate the American market in a way that we currently don't."

Trump has often spoken positively about his relationship with the Conservative leader and criticized Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Earlier this month, Trump vowed that he would "stay out of the election," telling reporters that "I think Boris is very capable and I think he'll do a good job."

Labour was engulfed in a brutal civil war this morning as moderates warned of '20 years of Tory rule' unless Jeremy Corbyn's supporters were removed from positions of power.

The bitter recrimination between Mr Corbyn's hard-Left supporters and more moderate factions began as soon as the exit polls last night accurately predicted the party's brutal pummelling at the hands of voters.

As Mr Corbyn revealed he would not fight another general election as opposition leader his closest confidants were quick to blame Brexit, the weather and his opponents to deflect from his failings in his four years in charge.

Laura Parker, the head of grassroots group Momentum, even claimed it was 'unquestionable that Labour's policies are popular' despite an overwhelming Tory majority.

But MPs ploughed into Mr Corbyn and the hardline socialist faction around him, warning that they were setting the scene for decades of Tory Government.

Gareth Snell, who was one of a host of MPs in Leave areas to lose their seats, called for Mr Corbyn to quit immediately.

The former Stoke-on-Trent Central MP said: 'This is the start of 20 years of Tory rule.'

Bookmakers have installed Remainer moderate Sir Keir Starmer as the favourite to become the new party leader.

But the shadow Brexit secretary is sure to face a challenge from a far left figure, with shadow business secretary Rebecca Long-Bailey, protegee of shadow chancellor John McDonnell, second favourite.

ELECTION 2019 RESULTS
Ruth Smeeth, who lost in neighbouring Stoke-on-Trent North, added that Mr Corbyn should have resigned 'many, many, many months ago' because of his handling of Labour's anti-Semitism crisis.

Who could be the next Labour leader?
As Labour faces a potentially devastating defeat at the general election, here is a look at who could be in the race to replace Jeremy Corbyn as party leader.

- John McDonnell
The shadow chancellor played a prominent role throughout the campaign, but has appeared to have ruled himself out as a future leader.

On Thursday night, Mr McDonnell said he will not serve 'either as a temporary or a permanent' leader of the Labour Party if Mr Corbyn were to resign.

Back in October, Mr McDonnell said he 'can't see' how he or close ally Mr Corbyn could continue to lead the party if they failed to win power after the next general election.

- Emily Thornberry

The shadow foreign secretary has deputised for Mr Corbyn in PMQs and has represented the Labour Party on various overseas visits.
Ms Thornberry, who campaigned for Remain in the 2016 Brexit referendum, joined the party when she was 17 and was motivated by her experiences being raised by her mother, a single parent living on a council estate, according to her website.

She was first elected as MP for Islington South and Finsbury on May 5 2005.

- Sir Keir Starmer

The shadow Brexit secretary was a human rights lawyer before becoming an MP, and co-founded Doughty Street Chambers in 1990.

He worked as human rights adviser to the Policing Board in Northern Ireland, monitoring compliance of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) with the Human Rights Act, and in 2008 he was appointed Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and Head of the Crown Prosecution Service for England and Wales.

Sir Keir was elected as Labour MP for Holborn & St Pancras in May 2015.

- Angela Rayner
Mr McDonnell named shadow education secretary Ms Rayner as a possible successor to Mr Corbyn in an interview with former Labour spin doctor Alastair Campbell for GQ magazine in October, saying whoever comes after Mr Corbyn "has got to be a woman".

Ms Rayner was brought up on a council estate and left her local comprehensive at 16 with no qualifications and pregnant, after being told she would "never amount to anything", according to her website. It adds that in 2015 she became the first woman MP in the 180-year history of her Ashton-under-Lyne constituency.

Her web page also says she rose through the ranks of the trade union movement to become the most senior elected official of Unison in the North West.

- Rebecca Long-Bailey

The shadow business secretary grew up by Old Trafford football ground in Manchester and began her working life serving at the counter of a pawn shop, according to her website.

She has also worked in call centres, a furniture factory, and as a postwoman before eventually studying to become a solicitor, her online biography adds, while she describes herself as a "proud Socialist" in her Twitter profile.

In 2015 she was elected as MP for Salford and Eccles.

‘His personal actions have delivered this result,' she said, adding that Mr Corbyn's failure to tackle anti-Jewish racist abuse had 'made us the nasty party'.

Dagenham East candidate Dame Margaret Hodge, a vocal critic of Mr Corbyn, echoed a similar sentiment as she tweeted: 'If this bears out, this is the utter failure of Corbyn & Corbynism. There is no other way of looking at it.'

Mr Corbyn announced in the early hours of this morning he will quit as Labour leader after the party crashed to one of its worst ever sets of general election results.

Mr Corbyn said he 'will not lead the party in any future election campaign' and that he will step down once his successor has been appointed.

He has led Labour to a tally of just 203 MPs as the party suffered a series of crushing defeats to the Tories in previously safe seats.

The 203 figure is even worse than Labour's notorious recent low watermark under Michael Foot in 1983 when the party sank to just 209 MPs.

Labour has lost dozens of seats to the Conservatives with Boris Johnson on course for an 80 seat majority.

The Tories are expected to finish on 365 MPs while Labour will finish down 59 on its 2017 election result. Finishing on 203 MPs represents the party's worst results since 1935.

In a sign of the difficulty Labour was in, the Tories managed to win the former mining area of Blyth Valley for the first time ever in one of the early declarations.

They then struck another massive blow to Labour as they gained the key seat of Workington.

It had been held by Labour since 1979 but the Tories managed to secure a majority of more than 4,000 votes after Conservative HQ had identified it as a crunch battleground.

The Tories then went onto seize a plethora of other Labour-held heartland constituencies, including Darlington, Peterborough, Leigh, Redcar, Burnley and Vale of Clwyd.

The overall nationwide result represents an emphatic rejection of Mr Corbyn's hard-left socialist vision which he has peddled since he unexpectedly became leader.

Announcing his decision to quit as leader after he was re-elected as the MP for Islington North, Mr Corbyn said: 'I will discuss with our party to ensure there is a process now of reflection on this result and on the policies that the party will take going forward.

'I will lead the party during that period to ensure that discussion takes place and we move on into the future.'

However, Mr Corbyn refused to accept any of the blame for his party's disastrous performance as he accused the media of 'disgusting' attacks and claimed his hard-left policy platform was 'extremely popular'.
His decision to walk away from the job he has occupied since September 2015 will fire the starting pistol on what is likely to be a bruising contest to replace him as Labour moderates and Corbyn acolytes battle for the soul of the party.

Mr Corbyn faced immediate calls to quit from furious Labour MP candidates as soon as voting stopped at 10pm and a devastating exit poll pointed to massive losses.

His position at the top of the party was instantly untenable after it became clear he had failed to win power in back-to-back general elections.
His allies tried to deflect blame away from him as they said Brexit was the cause of the party's dismal showing.

Donald Trump has congratulated his friend and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on his huge election win, and promised a new trade deal with the UK after Brexit.

Trump tweeted out his congratulations late on Thursday night.

'Congratulations to Boris Johnson on his great WIN! Britain and the United States will now be free to strike a massive new Trade Deal after BREXIT. This deal has the potential to be far bigger and more lucrative than any deal that could be made with the E.U. Celebrate Boris!' Trump tweeted.

The president had earlier tweeted: 'Looking like a big win for Boris in the U.K.!'

Trump's tweet came after Johnson's Conservative Party secured victory in the election, with the Prime Minister hailing 'a powerful new mandate to get Brexit done'.

His Conservative Party won a solid majority of seats in Britain's Parliament - a decisive outcome to a Brexit-dominated election that should allow Johnson to fulfill his plan to take the U.K. out of the European Union next month.

The president (pictured last night with First lady Melania Trump at the Congressional Ball at the White House) had earlier tweeted: 'Looking like a big win for Boris in the U.K.!'

With 640 of the 650 results declared, the Conservatives had 358 seats and Labour just 202.

The victory will likely make Johnson the most electorally successful Conservative leader since Margaret Thatcher, another politician who was loved and loathed in almost equal measure.

It was a disaster for left-wing Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who faced calls for his resignation even as the results rolled in.

Results poured in early Friday showing a substantial shift in support to the Conservatives from Labour. In the last election in 2017, the Conservatives won 318 seats and Labour 262.

The result this time looked set to be the biggest Tory majority since Thatcher's 1980s' heyday, and Labour's lowest number of seats since 1935.

Prime Minister Johnson hailed the victory as 'a powerful new mandate to get Brexit done'
The Scottish National Party appeared set to take about 50 of Scotland's 59 seats — a big increase — with a lackluster dozen or so for the centrist, pro-EU Liberal Democrats. Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson lost her own Scottish seat.

The decisive Conservative showing vindicates Johnson's decision to press for Thursday's early election, which was held nearly two years ahead of schedule.

He said that if the Conservatives won a majority, he would get Parliament to ratify his Brexit divorce deal and take the U.K. out of the EU by the current Jan. 31 deadline.

Speaking at the election count in his Uxbridge constituency in suburban London, Johnson said the 'historic' election 'gives us now, in this new government, the chance to respect the democratic will of the British people to change this country for the better and to unleash the potential of the entire people of this country.'

That message appears to have had strong appeal for Brexit-supporting voters, who turned away from Labour in the party's traditional heartlands and embraced Johnson's promise that the Conservatives would 'get Brexit done'.

Defeat will likely spell the end for Corbyn, a veteran socialist who moved his party sharply to the left after taking the helm in 2015, but who now looks to have led his left-of-center party to two electoral defeats since 2017.
The 70-year-old left-winger was also accused of allowing anti-Semitism to spread within the party.

Corbyn called the result 'very disappointing' for his party and said he would not lead Labour into another election, though he resisted calls to quit immediately.

But critics slammed him over the poor result.

Former Labour Cabinet minister Alan Johnson said: 'We knew he was incapable of leading, we knew he was worse than useless at all the qualities you need to lead a political party.'

Disgraced Ken Livingstone appears to blame Jewish people for Jeremy Corbyn's defeat by saying 'the Jewish vote wasn't very helpful'
Former Labour London mayor has said the Jewish vote 'wasn't very helpful'

Disgraced former London mayor Ken Livingstone last night appeared to blame Jewish people for Labour's defeat, sparking a fresh anti-semitism row.

Mr Livingstone, who left Labour last year over anti-Semitism, said: ‘The Jewish vote wasn’t very helpful.’

He was forced to quit the party after saying Hitler 'was supporting Zionism before he went mad and ended up killing six million Jews'.

It came as Countdown host Rachel Riley was joined by other members of the Jewish community last night as they shared their relief at Jeremy Corbyn’s poll humiliation.

Earlier in the day Jewish voters described how they felt ‘anxious’ and ‘worried’ after a campaign dominated by the Labour leader’s failure to crack down on anti-Semitism in his party.

But last night they expressed their sheer relief that the electorate had dismissed Mr Corbyn’s brand of anti-Israel extremism. Miss Riley, who has faced a barrage of anti-Semitism from Labour supporters, simply tweeted: ‘Love you Britain.’

Last night Mr Livingstone said ‘it looks like the end’ for his friend Mr Corbyn.

He said: ‘The Jewish vote wasn’t very helpful. Jeremy should have tackled that issue far earlier than he did.

‘It looks like the end for Jeremy, which is disappointing for me since I’m a close ally. I’m sure he’ll have to resign tomorrow.’

While Mr Corbyn was criticised for Labour’s radical election platform, Mr Livingstone said he would have preferred the party to have been even bolder.

‘I thought that perhaps they weren’t radical enough,’ he said. ‘But at the end of the day, the public didn’t like it. I think the idea for a four-day working week wasn’t very popular at all.’

Stephen Pollard, editor of the Jewish Chronicle, said last night: ‘The relief among the Jewish community is palpable. And the gratitude. Now it seems like the British people have told the Corbynites where to go, I realise that the worst thing they did was make Jews so nervous that we even doubted our fellow Brits.

‘They don’t like extremists and never have. It was awful we should ever have felt need to doubt that.’

Former EastEnders actress Tracy-Ann Oberman tweeted: ‘Thank you Great Britain. I’m crying my eyes out.’

During the campaign the Chief Rabbi made an explosive intervention, saying Mr Corbyn had allowed the ‘poison’ of antiSemitism to infect Labour.

And in an excruciating TV interview, the Labour leader repeatedly refused to apologise to the Jewish community for his party’s failings.

At Mr Corbyn’s final rally on Wednesday, supporters chanted: ‘From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free’ – apparently a call for Israel to cease to exist.

And Jewish actress Maureen Lipman faced online abuse after she wrote in yesterday’s Mail that a Corbyn premiership would be a ‘stain’ on Britain.

Miss Lipman, the veteran actress who is now starring in Coronation Street, had written: ‘Five years of a Corbyn government... would be a stain on all of us. ‘If history shows us anything, it’s that we’ll survive this upstart Islington wuss. But if we are to do so, today is the time for everyone – Jewish or not – to stand up.’

Triumphant Boris Johnson ordered Remainers calling for a second referendum to 'put a sock in it' today as he hailed his staggering election landslide.

After laying waste to Labour's 'red wall' of Leave-backing strongholds, the PM said he had been given a 'powerful' vote of confidence by the British people and would work 'night and day' to repay their trust.

He said the election rout had finally settled the Brexit issue, saying pressing ahead was now the 'irresistible, unquestionable decision of the British people'.

And in a stark message to those who have been pushing for a rerun of the 2016 Brexit contest, he said: 'That's it. Put a sock in the megaphone.'

He joked: 'Let's get Brexit done. But first, let's get breakfast done.'

The bullish speech to activists in Westminster, which was followed by a victory stroll into Downing Street with girlfriend Carrie Symonds, came as the Conservatives racked up a stunning tally of 365 seats in the first December election for nearly a century.

Jeremy Corbyn announced this morning that he will quit as leader after Labour humiliatingly collapsed to 203 - down 59 on 2017.

But Mr Corbyn petulantly swiped at 'disgusting' media attacks on him, saying he still believed his hard-Left platform was 'popular', and blamed Brexit for preventing 'normal political debate'. He made clear he will stay on for a period of 'reflection' while a replacement is selected.

How good are the results for the Tories?
Margaret Thatcher pictured after her first election victory +54

Experts are now forecasting a majority of 80 for the Tories.

That would be the biggest since Margaret Thatcher's landslide of 1987 - which was also driven by blue-collar Tory voters.

By contrast Labour's 203 would be its worst since the 1930s - leaving his dream of a socialist Britain in ruins.

It would outdo even the showing by Mr Corbyn's left-wing hero Michael Foot, who was famously put to the sword by Margaret Thatcher with just 209 seat in 1983.

Michael Foot with his disastrous 1983 Labour manifesto - known as the 'longest suicide note in history' +54

But his furious backbenchers have already signalled they want a change in political direction that will spark a civil war, warning there could be '20 years of Tory rule'.

The bombshell numbers would give Mr Johnson a huge Commons majority of 80, the biggest since Margaret Thatcher's third victory in 1987, and more than enough to fulfill his vow to 'get Brexit done'.

The Tories' estimated vote share of 45 per cent in Britain is the highest achieved since Edward Heath in 1970.

In England the Conservatives polled 47.1 per cent to Labour's 34.3 per cent, and in Wales they were supported by an impressive 36.1 per cent.

By contrast Mr Corbyn looks to have stewarded his party to its worst performance since 1935 and plunged it into a seething civil war - despite his allies vainly claiming earlier that high turnout might have helped him pull off a surprise.

In another moment of high drama, Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson suffered the ultimate humiliation of losing her own East Dunbartonshire seat. And ironically the party's Brexit spokesman Tom Brake lost his Carshalton base to the Tories.

As a delighted Donald Trump tweeted that it was 'looking like a big win' and teed up a 'massive new trade deal' with the US, Mr Johnson told a victory rally in Westminster: "In winning this election we have won votes and the trust of people who have never voted Conservative before and people have always voted for other parties.

'Those people want change. We cannot, must not, must not, let them down.

"And in delivering change we must change too.

"We must recognise the incredible reality that we now speak as a one nation Conservative Party literally for everyone from Woking to Workington, from Kensington I'm proud to say to Clwyd South, from Surrey Heath to Sedgefield, from Wimbledon to Wolverhampton."

He added: "Parliament must change so that we in Parliament are working for you the British people."

Speaking at his count in Uxbridge and South Ruislip earlier, told rapturous supporters, including girlfriend Carrie and their dog Dilyn, that he had not wanted to call the December election but the outcome was 'historic'.

And in an address to staff at CCHQ afterwards, Mr Johnson said: 'We must understand now what an earthquake we have created.

'The way in which we have changed the political map in this country.

'We have to grapple with the consequences of that. We have to change our own party. We have to rise to the level of events. We have to rise to the challenge that the British people have given us.'

The Conservatives pulled off a massive coup by securing the symbolic swing constituency of Workington, overturning a 3,000 majority to triumph by 4,000 votes with a 10 per cent swing.

They also overturned an 8,000 majority to rip the former mining area of Blythe Valley in Northumberland from Labour's grip for the first time ever. The party's candidate won by 700 votes after securing an incredible 10.2 per cent swing in what was theoretically only 85th on the target list.

There were jaw-dropping gains in Bishop Auckland - which had never elected a Conservative MP in 134 years - and Tony Blair's old stronghold of Sedgefield.

Left-wing 'Beast of Bolsover' Dennis Skinner was ejected from the seat he has held since 1970, as Mr Johnson flipped huge swathes of the country from deep red to Tory blue.

Other fortresses to fall included Leigh, Darlington, Wakefield, Stockton South, Redcar - which saw a 15.5 per cent swing - Peterborough, Wrexham and the Vale of Clywd.

As the political map was redrawn in a few tumultuous hours, places like Jarrow, Houghton & Sunderland South, Sunderland Central, and Newcastle Upon-Tyne Central saw enormous movements from Labour to the Conservatives - although the party clung on.

A pattern was emerging of Brexit Party candidates draining votes from Labour in its northern heartlands, while Tory support held steady.

In a few crumbs of comfort for Remainers, Cabinet minister Zac Goldsmith lost to the Lib Dems in the heavily Remain seat of Richmond Park.

Putney was taken from the Conservatives by Labour thanks to tactical voting by Lib Dem supporters. And Labour's Rosie Duffield kept hold of Canterbury - one of its marquee captures from the 2017 poll.

However, a cross-party bid to eject Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab in Esher & Walton and Tory ex-leader Iain Duncan Smith in Chingford and Wood Green failed. And Kensington was painted blue again, having briefly been held by Labour's Emma Dent Coad.

There were scenes of jubilation in CCHQ as the exit poll was unveiled at 10pm, with staff singing and dancing following a month of brutal political struggle as Mr Corbyn tried desperately to sell his hard-Left agenda to the UK public.

Boris Johnson hailed the political 'earthquake' that has given him a 'mandate to get Brexit done' today as he marched his new blue-collar Tory army towards a staggering election landslide.

After laying waste to Labour's 'red wall' of Leave-backing strongholds, the PM said he had been given a 'powerful' vote of confidence by the British people and vowed to 'rise to the challenge'.

The promise came with experts forecasting the Conservatives are on track to rack up 365 seats in the first December election for nearly a century, with Labour collapsing to 203 - down 59 on 2017. The Tories formally crossed the winning line of 325 seats just after 5am.

Jeremy Corbyn announced this morning that he will quit as leader in the wake of the humiliation, petulantly swiping at 'disgusting' media attacks on him, saying he still believed his hard-Left platform was 'popular', and blaming Brexit for preventing 'normal political debate'. However, he made clear he would stay on for a period of 'reflection' while a replacement was selected.

How good would the results be for the Tories?

Experts are now forecasting a majority of 80 for the Tories.

That would be the biggest since Margaret Thatcher's landslide of 1987 - which was also driven by blue-collar Tory voters.

By contrast Labour's 203 would be its worst since the 1930s - leaving his dream of a socialist Britain in ruins.

It would outdo even the showing by Mr Corbyn's left-wing hero Michael Foot, who was famously put to the sword by Margaret Thatcher with just 209 seat in 1983.

As a delighted Donald Trump tweeted that it was 'looking like a big win' and teed up a 'massive new trade deal' with the US, Mr Johnson told rapturous supporters, including girlfriend Carrie and their dog Dilyn, that he had not wanted to call the December election but the outcome was 'historic'.

Speaking at his count in Uxbridge and South Ruislip, Mr Johnson said: 'Clearly lots of results are still coming in and we're still mainly dealing with projections but at this stage it does look as though this One Nation Conservative government has been given a powerful new mandate to get Brexit done.

'And not just to get Brexit done, but to untie this country and to take it forward and to focus on the priorities of the British people, and above all, on the NHS.'

In an address to staff at CCHQ afterwards, Mr Johnson said: 'We must understand now what an earthquake we have created.

VIDEO WE DID IT!

The initial exit poll suggested the Tories were going to do even better, with 368 seats and Labour collapsing to 191.

However, the numbers were scaled back a bit as more actual results came through.

The SNP are predicted to get 46 MPs - up from 35 two years ago - and the Lib Dems have gone into reverse on 11 after a dismal all-out Remain campaign.

Mr Corbyn's dream of a Socialist Britain is now in ruins, with his time in charge of the party doomed to end in failure.

Labour's expected tally of 203 would be worse than the showing by his hero Michael Foot, who was famously put to the sword by Thatcher with just 209 seat in 1983.

As the picture emerged, Mr Johnson tweeted a 'thank you' to 'everyone across our great country who voted, who volunteered, who stood as candidates'.

Nicola Sturgeon was caught on camera wildly celebrating Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson's defeat.

The SNP leader was being filmed as the result was declared in East Dunbartonshire.

Ms Swinson lost her seat by around 150 votes, capping a dismal night for the pro-Remain party.

Posting a picture of himself with workers carrying a 'we love Boris' sign, he said: 'We live in the greatest democracy in the world.'

In an amazing piece of understatement, an ashen-faced shadow chancellor John McDonnell said the exit poll was 'disappointing' and blamed it on Brexit. 'I thought it would be closer,' he said.

'The poll itself, I think it looks as though it's Brexit dominated, a lot of this I think was Brexit fatigue, people just wanted it over and done with and it put Labour in a very difficult position.'

Speaking to BBC News, Mr McDonnell said: 'We thought other issues could cut through and there would be a wider debate, from this evidence there clearly wasn't.'

On the future of Mr Corbyn's leadership, Mr McDonnell said: 'Let's see the results themselves, as I say, the appropriate decisions will be made and we'll always make the decisions in the best interests of our party.'

But Labour moderates were jubilant, with one source who had expected a narrow result telling MailOnline: 'Never been so pleased to be wrong.' Former Labour MPs said the 'Great Leader' should immediately resign along with his hard-Left clique.

Dame Margaret Hodge, who repeatedly condemned Mr Corbyn over the anti-Semitism that has been rampant in Labour since he took charge, said: 'This is the utter failure of Corbyn & Corbynism. There is no other way of looking at it.'

Amid reports of 'mega' turnout and unprecedented levels of tactical voting by Remainers, Tories had become nervous that victory could somehow slip from their grasp, despite a slew of polls during the campaign having given them a double-digit advantage.

But the fears proved unfounded, as the party's mantra of 'get Brexit done' swung previously rock-solid Labour supporters. And in the end turnout appears to have actually fallen by 1.49 per cent on the 2017 figure to jut over 67 per cent.

The pound immediately jumped 3 per cent against the US dollar on the news, as markets breathed a sigh of relief at the prospect of clarity on Brexit and no anti-business Labour government.

Ms Abbott, a close ally of Jeremy Corbyn, is defending a Labour majority of 35,000 in her Hackney North and Stoke Newington seat.

Ms Abbott has has a low key election campaign and has seldom featured at large events with Jeremy Corbyn.

He was greeted by a protester dressed as Elmo, a character from children's TV programme Sesame Street as he arrived to cast his vote in north London this morning.

The woman was restrained by security guards as she tried to approach Mr Corbyn as he entered the polling station.

As the woman in fancy dress argued with security and police, Mr Corbyn said: 'Hello guys, can we stop the arguments please.'
He later posed for photographs with a small number of supporters and well-wishers outside the polling station at Pakeman Primary School in Islington with his wife Laura Alvarez.

Fifty infamous moments that shame Jeremy Corbyn: The list of incidents that call into question the Labour leader's credentials to be prime minister
Jeremy Corbyn has been branded a threat to national security by everyone from his own shadow health secretary Jon Ashworth to former MI6 chief Sir Richard Dearlove.

During his long career in politics, he has held meetings with and appeared at rallies with enemies of Britain including IRA bombers and Islamist extremists.

The Labour leader claims he has always wanted to bring about peace and talk to all sides in conflicts.

But the list below, which originated online before being reviewed and separately confirmed by the Mail as to its accuracy, would appear — at the very least — to call into question Mr Corbyn's claim and his credentials to be prime minister.

Mr Corbyn's supporters say that he has always stood up for minority groups who are oppressed by larger, more powerful states, and has always sought dialogue and peace.

This means, however, that he sometimes shares platforms with people whose views he does not share, be they in the Middle East or in Northern Ireland.

He said in 2015: 'I am absolutely committed to a meaningful peace process between Israelis and Palestinians and that has to be one based on the 1967 borders. I am proud to have been one of the first politicians prepared to engage in dialogue with Irish republicans about a peace process in Northern Ireland in the 1980s.'

This is the list of what Mr Corbyn has done:

The Conservatives have taken the Workington seat from Labour in a huge swing.

Mark Jenkinson romped home with 49.3 per cent of the vote, knocking Labour's Sue Hayman into second.

The result represented a stunning 9.7 per cent swing for the Tories, in a seat that has been Labour since 1918, apart from a brief period in the 1970s.

The constituency voted 61 per cent in favour of Brexit during the 2016 Referendum.

Workington, in Cumbria, had been a key target for Boris Johnson's party, with attracting the Workington man seen as crucial to Tory hopes of a majority.

The Conservatives pulled off a massive coup by securing the symbolic seat, overturning a 3,000 majority to triumph by 4,000 votes.

Labour's 'red wall' of Brexit-backing strongholds imploded throughout the night, with the Conservatives earning huge swings in several seats.

Redcar saw a massive 15.5 per cent swing to the Conservatives, Bishop Auckland turned blue with a 9.5 per cent swing and Burnley went Tory with a 9.6 per cent swing.

Sedgefield, Tony Blair's former seat, saw a 12.8 per cent swing to the Conservatives.

The Tories took a succession of other Labour seats across the north of England and in Wales, including Blythe Valley, Scunthorpe, Wolverhampton North East, West Bromwich East, Stockton South, Darlington, Peterborough, Blackpool South, Wrexham and the Vale of Clwyd.

They also narrowly held Iain Duncan Smith's constituency of Chingford and Woodford Green with a majority of 1,062.

The term Workington Man is a reference to 'an older, white, non-graduate man from the north of England with an interest in rugby league and a tendency to vote Labour'.

This demographic, according to a Tory think-tank, was who the PM had to win over to gain a majority.

According to the group, this voter has lived in his home for more than ten years as either a council tenant or owner occupier.

He favours security over freedom, thinks the economy and national culture is moving away from his views, and voted Leave.

He works in a skilled manual trade or in a lower managerial role and is likely to live in a town or rural area rather than a city. He is more supportive than most people of a strong leader who does not have to bother with Parliament.

The Workington Man wants government to prioritise apprenticeships rather than cut the cost of student loans and thinks it should promote a shared sense of national identity over a diversity of identities.

He is more likely than the rest of the population to think crime is a major issue facing the country and twice as likely to think immigration is a major issue.

He is particularly sceptical about the benefits of globalisation and thinks we have a special responsibility to protect local institutions such as pubs and post offices from closure.

The use of voter stereotypes as a targeting tactic dates back to at least Margaret Thatcher's repeated electoral wins in the 1980s where the working-class 'Essex man' switched allegiance from Labour to the Tories.

Voter stereotypes used during previous elections include the 1996 'Mondeo man', the 1997 'Worcester woman', and the 2003 'Bacardi Breezer Generation' of 18 to 25-year-olds, among others.

And this time, the Tory targeting of the Workington Man was a success.

The result came after a dramatic exit poll showed the Tories are on track to rack up 368 seats in the first December election for nearly a century, with Labour collapsing to 191 - down 71 on 2017.

The bombshell numbers would give Mr Johnson a huge Commons majority of 86, the biggest since Margaret Thatcher's third victory in 1987, and more than enough to fulfill his vow to 'get Brexit done'.

By contrast Mr Corbyn looks to have stewarded his party to its worst performance since 1935 and plunged it into a seething civil war - despite his allies claiming earlier that high turnout might have helped him pull off a surprise.

Early results bore out the extraordinary exit poll findings, with the Tories overturning an 8,000 majority to rip the former mining area of Blythe Valley from Labour's grip for the first time ever. The party's candidate won by 700 votes after securing an incredible 10.2 per cent swing.

There were also jaw-dropping gains in Bishop Auckland - which had never elected a Conservative MP in 134 years - Leigh, and the Vale of Clywd.

Speaking from his count in Islington North tonight, where he was re-elected for the tenth time, Jeremy Corbyn said he would not lead the party in any future election campaign.

'This is obviously a very disappointing night for the party', he said.

'In the election campaign we put forward a manifesto of hope, a manifesto of unity, and a manifesto that would help to write the wrongs and the injustices and inequalities that live in this country.

'However, Brexit has so polarised and divided debate in this country it has overridden so much of a normal political debate. And I realise it has contributed to the result the Labour party has seen tonight across this country.

'I want to also make it clear that I will not lead the party in any future election campaign.'

Throughout a devastating night for the party, the crumbling wall continued to let out more Labour seats, with Bridgend, Gedling and Sedgefield all turning blue.

Labour lost an astounding 17 per cent of its vote in Sedgefield, as the party was pummelled into second place by the Conservatives who won a majority of more than 4,000.

Heading through the gaping hole in Labour's disintegrating defences was North West Durham, switching sides for the first time since the seat was re-formed in 1950, and Bury South in Greater Manchester, which has been Labour since 1997.

They were followed by Birmingham Northfield, Labour for 27 years, Ashfield, Labour for 40 years, and Wakefield, Labour for 87 years.

At 4.26am it appeared the wall had officially been breached with Stoke-on-Trent Central, Stoke-on-Trent North and Derby North all turning a deep shade of blue.

In Derby North former Labour MP Chris Williamson, who was ejected from the party following allegations of anti-semitism, lost his deposit when he achieved only 635 votes while standing as an independent.

And at 5.06am the famed Beast of Bolsover Dennis Skinner lost his seat after holding it for 49 years.
