Robert Trump, the president’s younger brother, dead at 71
The president visited his brother at a New York City hospital on Friday after White House officials said he had become seriously ill. Officials did not immediately release a cause of death.

“It is with heavy heart I share that my wonderful brother, Robert, peacefully passed away tonight,” Donald Trump said in a statement. “He was not just my brother, he was my best friend. He will be greatly missed, but we will meet again. His memory will live on in my heart forever. Robert, I love you. Rest in peace.”

President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that his brother Robert Trump had died following a serious illness.

“He was not just my brother, he was my best friend,” Trump wrote in a statement. “He will be greatly missed, but we will meet again.”

President Trump visited his brother Robert at the hospital on Friday afternoon in New York City before returning to his club at Bedminster, New Jersey.

“He’s having a hard time,” Trump told reporters at a press conference earlier that day. “I have a wonderful brother. We’ve had a great relationship for a long time, from day one.”

Details of his illness were not publicized.

President Trump has four other siblings; Maryanne Trump Barry is a senior judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and Elizabeth Trump Grau is a retired Chase Manhattan Bank executive. His brother Fred was 43 when he died because of complications related to alcoholism.

Robert Trump was the youngest child in the family and was 72. He was very supportive of his brother running for president.

“I support Donald one thousand percent,” he told the New York Post‘s Page Six. “I think he’s doing a great job. I think he’s got a great message.”

Trump paid tribute to his brother in his statement.

“His memory will live on in my heart forever,” Trump said. “Robert, I love you. Rest in peace.”

The president is expected to attend his brother’s funeral in the coming days, according to reports.

President Donald Trump’s younger brother Robert was recently admitted to a hospital in New York City, where he is being treated for an undisclosed medical issue.

While the details of Robert’s condition are unknown, sources close to the situation described the president’s brother as “very ill,” according to ABC News.

Trump, who has a “very good relationship” with his brother, is scheduled to stop in New York City this afternoon to visit Robert.

“I have a wonderful brother,” the president told reporters. “We’ve had a great relationship for a long time, from day one. And he’s in the hospital right now, and hopefully he’ll be alright, but he is pretty — he’s having a bad time.”

As for Trump’s visit to New York, a police source told New York Daily News the NYPD would coordinate with the U.S. Secret Service to provide an escort to the hospital for the president.

Robert was also reportedly also hospitalized in June. He was treated for more than a week in the neurosciences intensive care unit of Mount Sinai hospital. On its website, the hospital described its NSICU as offering “state of the art, compassionate care of patients who suffer from subarachnoid hemorrhage, acute ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, subdural hematomas, coma, tumors of the brain and spine, severe or prolonged seizures, neuro-infections, [and] spinal cord injury among others.”
