The Biden administration just announced additional sanctions on more Jewish farmers in Judea & Samaria. Not on the terror-supporting Islamic state of Iran. Not on the terror-supporting state of Qatar. Not on the bank accounts of Hamas or Palestinian Authority accounts or of their terrorists. No. Biden has placed sanctions on Jewish farmers in Judea & Samaria. Now hear the whole story on why they are modern Jewish heroes.

The IDF operation in Al-Shifa hospital continues. Around 50 terrorists have been killed and 180 detained.

Warrant Officer Sebastian Haion, 51, a commander in the 401st Armored Brigade chief’s forward command team, from Rosh Haayin, was killed in the operation in Al-Shifa hospital.

For a complete list of the soldiers killed in the ground offensive, click here.

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan confirmed that Marwan Issa, third in command in Hamas, was killed in an Israeli attack in Gaza last week. Sullivan said, "Israel has made significant progress against Hamas. They have broken a significant number of the Hamas battalions, killed thousands of Hamas fighters, including senior commanders, Hamas's number three Marwan Issa was killed in an Israeli operation last week, the rest of the top leaders are in hiding, likely deep in the Hamas tunnel network and justice will come for them too and we are helping to ensure that." He also said that PM Netanyahu requested that a team from Israel travel to D.C. to lay out plans for an assault on Rafah and discuss the humanitarian aid situation. This comes after Netanyahu spoke with Biden in a 45 minute phone conversation on Monday.

According to a Syrian report, Israel struck ammunition depots in the area of al-Katifa and Kafr Yabrod, north of Damascus, today. The weapons were transferred by the Syrian army to Hezbollah.

The IDF's central command has established a special team to locate tunnels in the West Bank.

According to a German source, the 27 heads of state of the European Union are expected to call for an immediate humanitarian pause in the fighting in Gaza, leading to a permanent ceasefire. In my latest article in Times of Israel, I explain how calling for a ceasefire destroys the prospect for arriving at a two-state solution, which is what all of these countries, along with the Biden administration, are advocating for. Raza Zarei, an Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps advisor, was killed in an Israeli attack in Syria this morning. Zarei was reportedly involved in transferring Iranian weaponry to and from Syria, Lebanon, Russia on behalf of Iran's Quds Force. Two other Hezbollah terrorists were also killed in the strike.

The air force continues to strike Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, as Hezbollah continues to fire rockets into northern Israel. At least 5 senior Hezbollah members, including brigade commanders with years of control over certain areas near the Israel border, were eliminated this week. At least 250 Hezbollah terrorists have been killed since Oct. 7.

Two terrorists opened fire on people at a gas station near the settlement of Eli in Samaria, killing Yitzhak Zeiger, 57, a resident of Shavei Shomron, and Uria Hartum, 16, Dolev. One of the owners of the Hummus Eliyahu restaurant at the station, who recently returned from reserve service in Khan Younis, shot and killed the terrorist. The terrorist has been identified as Muhammad Manassara, a resident of the Qalandiya refugee camp who was a Palestinian Authority police officer with the rank equivalent to major. The other terrorists was killed by security forces as he tried to flee. For more, click here.

The IDF spokesman confirmed that IDF soldiers did NOT fire at Palestinian civilians who stormed humanitarian aid trucks, coordinated by Israel, in northern Gaza yesterday. The trucks ran over the looters, killing dozens. Other civilians died in the stampede. The Palestinians are claiming that Israeli forces shot at the crowd, killing 100 civilians, and the media, along with some world leaders (including French President Macron) are perpetuating this blatant lie. [Meanwhile, over 130 Israeli hostages are still being held captive and tortured and raped, in Gaza. All Hamas needs to do is to release them and and the suffering of their own people. Unfortunately, Hamas only cares about its own terrorists, who are safely hidden, and well fed, in their underground sanctuaries beneath the hell of Gaza.]

Rocket fire from Lebanon and IDF strikes against Hezbollah terror targets continue. Rockets were intercepted above Haifa. Israel struck a terror targets in Damascus last night and today. [This situation cannot continue for much longer.]

Hundreds of civilians swarmed around humanitarian aid trucks that entered into northern Gaza this morning, attempting to loot them. Hamas terrorists fired at the crowds. Dozens were killed in the stampede. Part of the crowd threateningly approached soldiers near the crowd. The soldiers fired warning shots in the air. Palestinians are falsely claiming that soldiers shot at the crowd, killing 70 and wounding 280. [The media will most likely run with the Palestinian fake news, causing major backlash and protests against Israel.]

The war in Gaza has had a positive impact on the fourth quarter results of El Al Israel Airlines Ltd. With almost all foreign airlines halting flights to and from Israel in the fourth quarter of 2023, El Al had a monopoly on many of the routes to and from Tel Aviv. Consequently, El Al had an 80% market share in the fourth quarter of 2023, compared with 22% in the previous quarter.

In 2023, El Al reported net profit of $117 million, up from $109 million in 2022. In the fourth quarter of 2023, net profit was $39.7 million, up 370% from the corresponding quarter of 2022. Revenue in the fourth quarter of 2023 was $677.8 million, up 21% from the corresponding quarter and operating profit was $161 million, up 58% from the corresponding quarter.

The IDF assassinated a Hezbollah commander responsible for multiple attacks against Israel.

Dozens of rockets were fired at the Golan. No damage of casualties were reported. Another rocket barrage was fired at the IDF air control base on Mt. Meron in northern Israel. No damage or casualties were reported. IDF struck the sources of the launches, as well as Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon.

President Biden told reporters yesterday that his national security advisor informed him that a deal to release some of the hostages in exchange for a 6 week cease fire and the release of senior terrorists was very close and would probably be signed by the end of the weekend. He said, “Ramadan’s coming up and there has been an agreement by the Israelis that they would not engage in activities during Ramadan as well, in order to give us time to get all the hostages out.” Unfortunately, Israeli officials don't seem to be aware of this upcoming breakthrough in the ongoing negotiations. A senior official from Egypt has said the draft cease-fire deal includes the release of up to 40 women and older hostages in return for up to 300 Palestinian prisoners, mostly women, minors and older people. The Qatari Foreign Ministry's spokesman stated yesterday that "there is no breakthrough in the negotiations for a hostage deal talks and a ceasefire in Gaza." [The Michigan primary being held today might have something to do with Biden's optimistic statement. The state has the largest Arab population in the country.]

US intelligence services are reportedly helping Israel map Hamas tunnels in order to locate Hamas leader Sinwar. US and Israeli intelligence sources believe that he is hiding in tunnels beneath Khan Yunis, but that killing or capturing him would endanger the lives of the hostages he is using as human shields.

Security forces killed an Palestinian Islamic Jihad commander and 2 other terrorists in northern Samaria this morning. Several others were injured. One Israeli soldier was lightly injured in the raid. In addition, 14 terror suspects were arrested in overnight raids throughout the territories.

Municipal elections are being held across Israel today.

A joint operation between the Shin Bet, Border Police and IDF early Sunday morning resulted in the rescue of 2 hostages who were held in an apartment in Rafah. The hostages, Fernando Simon Marman (60) and Louis Har (70), were kidnapped by Hamas on October 7th from Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak. The operation was led by the Shin Bet's Special Operations Command and executed by the elite YAMAM (police SWAT) unit, alongside the Shin Bet's operational teams.

The special forces stealthily entered the building complex at 1:49am on Sunday morning, fought off terrorists who attacked them from adjacent buildings and then broke into the apartment, killed the 3 terrorists guarding the hostages, and rescued the hostages. They then exited the building complex under heavy fire. The air force provided massive cover fire to allow the troops to successfully get the hostages out safely. Armored forces also assisted in the extrication of the troops and hostages. One soldier was lightly wounded from a fall. A large number of terrorists were killed in the fighting. Several structures were also destroyed. The operation lasted an hour. The hostages were evacuated by helicopter. For more on the operation, click here.

Fernando Simon Marman and Louis Har were abducted on Oct. 7 along with 3 female family members, who were released as part of the hostage deal in November. The men were in captivity for 129 days. They were very thin, but appeared to be in good health. They were being held in an apartment where a family was living.

[Meanwhile, President Biden wants Israel to stop their advance on Rafah. Has he heard of the hostage rescue in Rafah? Does he understand that the rest of the 134 hostages are probably being held in Rafah too? And that Hamas still has thousands of armed terrorists in Rafah? He's clearly either very confused or has traded his moral compass for the votes of the Arabs of Michigan (or both). This successful rescue operation proves that Israeli must press forward with full force to destroy Hamas in Rafah and save the hostages, or at least force Hamas into releasing them. If Biden wants an end to the war, then force Hamas to release the hostages and surrender. The only other alternative is the total destruction of Hamas -- and that means getting the job done in Rafah.]

Sergeant First Class Adi Eldor, 21, from Haifa and Sergeant First Class (res.) Alon Kleinman, 21, from Tel Aviv were killed by an anti-tank missile strike in West Khan Younis on Monday.

For a complete list of the soldiers killed in the ground offensive, click here.

A terrorist attempted to stab police officers in Jerusalem's Old City yesterday. The terrorist was shot and killed by police. Also yesterday, a terrorist tried to stab soldiers patrolling a highway near the village of Husan near Beitar Illit. The terrorist was shot and neutralized. Security forces arrested 17 terror suspects in overnight raids.

Israel reportedly struck a military airport in Damascus this morning.

Over 30 rockets were fired into northern Israel last night, towards an air force base near Mt. Hermon. All landed in open areas. The attack followed a drone attack in Nabatieh, southern Lebanon, which wounded a regional Hezbollah commander. Other rockets and projectiles were fired towards Israel throughout yesterday. No casualties or damage was reported.

The Shin Bet released video from an interrogation of a Hamas commander in the Nukhba unit who surrendered deep inside a tunnel in Khan Yunis, along with 2 other terrorists. The terrorists were heavily armed, but they chose not to fight in order to save their lives. He says on the video, "I recommend to everyone to surrender, because your destiny is to die."

Yahya Sinwar, Hamas leader in Gaza, has been out of contact with the Hamas leadership abroad for more than 10 days now. He is hiding deep underground and moving fro place from place. It is unlikely that he is involved in the current round of negotiations for the release of hostages.

The WSJ published an article based on extensive interviews with Tamar Metzger, a 78 year old female hostage who was released in one of the exchanges. The article reflects the experience of Metzger and other elderly hostages and paints a picture of hardship and suffering -- but it also humanizes their Hamas captors and the treatment they received from them. Unfortunately, the younger female hostages being held in other places are facing a much different reality that includes constant sexual assault, rape and torture. The men are facing that same reality. So let's not be lulled into complacency by the experiences of some of the elderly female former hostages. We, and the world, must demand that all of the hostages be released, immediately and unconditionally. There is no valid defense for permitting rape. The hundreds of thousands of pro Hamas protesters throughout the world, including the budding scholars populating our universities (and manning the counters at your local Starbucks) don't agree -- at least when the rape is against Jewish women. The rape must stop. The hostages must be released. Period.

Combat operations continue in Gaza.

IDF troops operating in Gaza found a detailed Hamas manual for the production of explosives and rocket propellant material using Hydrogen Peroxide supplied to hospitals. The IDF has captured over a half million Hamas documents including operational plans and combat strategies.

IDF troops captured the primary base for the Khan Younis Brigade, which was used to train terrorists for the October 7 massacre. The base contained advanced weapons production facilities and warehouses filled with rockets and mortar shells. According to an IDF assessment, over 100 miles of tunnels have been mapped beneath Khan Yunis. The army has facilitated the evacuation of over 120,000 civilians from Khan Yunis in the last 2 weeks.

Sgt. First Class (res.) Shimon Yehoshua Asulin, 24, of the Combat Engineering Corps' 924th Battalion, from Beit Shemesh, was killed in southern Gaza.

Hamas has reportedly ordered members of its police force to resume working in the northern part of Gaza, where the IDF presence has been significantly reduced and where civilian daily life is beginning to resume. The police has been instructed to arrest Gazans involved in looting houses and shops. In footage released from the northern Gaza Strip on Saturday, Hamas police officers, masked and armed, are seen leading partially naked detainees who allegedly looted homes in a "walk of shame.” Leaders of the Hamas military wing reportedly have appointed new battalion commanders, deputies and field personnel to replace those eliminated by the IDF.

US envoy Amos Hochstein outlined the key elements of a diplomatic plan to deescalate tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. The plan consists of two phases. In phase 1, Hezbollah would cease hostilities along the border and withdraw 8 to 10 kilometers north from the border. A large deployment of the Lebanese army and UNIFIL peacekeeping forces would maintain quiet in the border area. In phase 2, Israel and Lebanon would begin negotiations to demarcate the land border, including discussions on 13 points on disputes along their shared boundaries. Simultaneously, the U.S. and the international community would explore offering "economic incentives" to Lebanon. The proposal was approved by the Lebanese government. Israel has stated that it is open to a diplomatic solution, but its first priority is to the safety and returning them to their homes in the north.

Over the weekend, dozens of rockets were fired at Israeli communities from Lebanon. The IDF responded with strikes against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon.

The IDF's 36th Division, which includes the Golani Infantry Brigade, the 188th Armored Brigade, and the 282nd Artillery Brigade, has been deployed to the Lebanon border following their withdrawal from Gaza.

A terrorist attempted to stab Border Police in the town of al-Eizariya, outside of Jerusalem. The officers shot and neutralized him. No Israelis were hurt. Security forces arrested 33 terror suspects in overnight raids throughout the West Bank.

Pramila Patten, the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Special Envoy for Sexual Violence in Conflicts who is in Israel investigating the sexual crimes against Israeli women on Oct. 7, said that she has been unable to sleep for a week since viewing the 47-minute video compiled by the IDF of the atrocities committed on October 7. President Biden issued an executive order imposing sanctions against 4 Israeli residents of Judea and Samaria (settlers) involved in violence against Palestinians. Their assets in American financial institutions will be frozen and blocked. The Prime Minister’s Office called the move “unusual and has no place” and said, “The large majority of settlers in the West Bank abide by the law, and many of them are fighting to defend Israel in recent days. Israel is acting against criminals in all places, therefore there’s no need for steps in the matter.”

According to IDF assessments, residents of the northern settlements evacuated due to the ongoing conflict will not be able to return home until the end of the current school year (June/July).

Combat operations continue in Gaza.

Several rockets were fired from Syria into the Golan last night. The IDF struck targets in Syria in response. This morning rockets were fired from Lebanon at communities in the north. The IDF is responding with artillery fire. The IDF is reducing the number of soldiers deployed in communities along the Lebanese border.

As the fighting continues in Gaza, the IDF revealed that they are using newly developed technology to flood Hamas tunnels, without harming the surrounding ecosystem or fresh water supply. But there are between 350 and 450 miles of tunnels, many of which are porous and absorb water -- so the job to flood them is extremely challenging, to say the least. Perhaps the pressure the IDF is putting on the terrorists, particularly the leadership, in (and under) Khan Yunis is compelling them to negotiate for a hostage release and cease fire. A Hamas delegation is expected to arrive in Cairo today for talks.

IDF soldiers killed in Gaza:

Maj. (res.) Netzer Simchi, 30, of the 14th Armored Brigade's 87th Battalion, from Masad.

Cpt. (res.) Gavriel Shani, 28, a team commander in the 646th Brigade's 6646th Patrol Battalion, from Eli.

Warrant Officer (res.) Yuval Nir, 43, of the 646th Brigade's 6646th Patrol Battalion, from Kfar Etzion.

For a complete list of the soldiers killed in the ground offensive, click here.

Security forces arrested 14 terror suspects and confiscated caches of weapons overnight in raids throughout the West Bank.

Protesters, many of whom are relatives of the hostages, continue to attempt to block humanitarian aid from entering into Gaza, and into the hands of Hamas. Eighteen protesters were arrested at the Kerem Shalom crossing.

Rockets were fired at the Metulla area and an anti-tank missile at an IDF post on Mount Hermon. The IDF responded by striking numerous Hezbollah targets in Lebanon.

The hostage deal currently being negotiated would include a 6 week pause in the fighting, including stopping drone flights, during which Hamas would gather the hostages. The hostages would be released in 3 phases, in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and humanitarian aid. The first phase would include the elderly, sick and children. The second would include female soldiers. The third would include male soldiers and dead bodies -- but some hostages would remain in captivity, as human shields. Nothing has yet been agreed to. National Security Minister Ben Gvir has said he would bring down the government over the deal. But Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid has indicated that he would be open to joining the government if Ben Gvir left.

[There is an impossible dilemma regarding the hostages. On the one hand it is the governments responsibility to protect its soldiers and citizens and to do everything possible to return them home. At the same time, the government must protect all of its citizens and provide them with safety -- which it cannot fully accomplish as long has Hamas continues to function with military capabilities to carry out attacks against Israelis. Destroying Hamas and returning the hostages cannot both be fully accomplished. The government is trying to find a way to accomplish both objectives. Is that possible?]

IDF soldiers killed in Gaza:

Maj. (res.) Yitzhar Hofman, 36, a commander in the Israeli Air Force's elite Shaldag unit, from Eshhar. He was wounded in the fighting late last year but returned to Gaza to continue fighting. He also fought the terrorists at Kibbutz Be'eri on Oct. 7.

Ismail Haniyeh, head of the Hamas political bureau based in Qatar, said that Hamas leaders would study a ceasefire proposal created after talks in Paris on Sunday and that he would visit Cairo for discussions on the plan. The deal reportedly includes the release of hostages in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners, cease-fires and the continued transfer of humanitarian aid to Gaza. Hamas has demanded a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. While US officials had expressed optimism in the success of the deal, the Prime Minister’s Office said that an agreement was not within sight and that the Hamas demands were unacceptable. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir threatened to bring down the government if the deal is accepted. Meanwhile, Israel handed over dozens of bodies of Palestinians killed in the fighting in Gaza, which had been held in Israel. They will be buried in mass graves in the city of Rafah.

IDF air and ground operations continue throughout Gaza, with the major offensive focusing on Khan Yunis. Dozens of Hamas terrorists have been killed in the last day. [Unfortunately, thousands more still remain.]

The IDF continues to clear a 1 km wide buffer zone in Gaza along the entire length of the Israeli border. The US has expressed opposition to the move. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, “We’ve been very clear about our opposition to the forced displacement of people. We’ve been very clear about maintaining in effect the territorial integrity of Gaza.”

Qatar informed Israel yesterday that Hamas has temporarily suspended its efforts to reach an outline for a hostage deal. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich accused Qatar of cooperating with Hamas. Meanwhile, a new restaurant has opened, on the Jordanian side of the Dead Sea, called October 7.

The Ministry of Energy is reportedly considering refusing to extend Israel's water agreement with Jordan, due to several Jordanian officials, including the Queen, denouncing Israel. According to the current agreement, Israel provides Jordan with 100 million cubic meters of water, twice as much as the amount provided for in the treaty between the countries. The water is provided in exchange for electricity.

Yesterday, Kfir Bibas turned 1 years old in captivity in Gaza. We can only hope and pray that he is still alive and that he will be returned home with all of the Israeli hostages still being held by Hamas.

Several women recently released from captivity recounted the horrors they experienced to business leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos and also to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. For more, click here.

The IDF conducting a search and rescue operation in a cemetery in Gaza and reportedly brought 21 bodies back to Israel. Some of them might be the bodies of Israeli hostages. Nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

IDF air, ground and naval forces continue to conduct operations throughout Gaza. An airstrike eliminated a high ranking Islamic Jihad commander responsible for psychological warfare. Troops also destroyed the main Hamas weapons production facility, which was spread among numerous tunnels and above ground structures.

IDF Soldiers killed in Gaza:

Staff Sgt. Ori Gerby, 20, of the Givati Brigade's reconnaissance unit, from Herzliya.

IDF jets struck Hezbollah targets in Lebanon yesterday and today, in response to rockets fired.

There are still a quarter of a million Israel displaced from their homes in the north and south who cannot return as long as Hezbollah and Hamas threaten Israel's security. This situation cannot continue for much longer. The only definitive solution is to degrade Hezbollah's and Hamas' military capabilities to the point that it will be impossible for them to attack. The IDF is in the process of doing that in Gaza. Hezbollah is next.

Israel has launched a new website with information, photos and videos of the Hamas Oct. 7 massacre. The images on the site are very graphic and emotionally difficult to see, but it is important for the world to see the inhuman crimes that Hamas and their civilian supporters perpetrated that day. Several rockets were fired at northern Israel from Lebanon yesterday, to which the IDF responded with targeted airstrikes against the sources of the launches.

Hezbollah has rejected a US proposal that it withdraw its fighters 4 miles from the Israeli border. Hezbollah said that it would not stop firing rockets until there was a ceasefire in Gaza. Hezbollah has, however, signaled that once the Gaza war is over it could be open to Lebanon negotiating a mediated deal over disputed areas at the border.

Security forces eliminated Amed Abdullah Abu-Shalal, the Head of Terrorist Infrastructure of the Balata camp in Nablus, who planned to carry out an imminent, large-scale terrorist attack. was responsible for carrying out a number of terrorist attacks over the last year, including the shooting attack in the Shimon HaTzadik neighborhood in Jerusalem last April during which two Jerusalem residents were injured, and the bombing attack against IDF soldiers last October during which a soldier was injured. Two other terrorists were also killed along with Abu-Shalal.

IDF forces struck terror targets in southern Lebanon using aircraft, tanks and artillery after an anti-tank missiles and rockets were fired yesterday and today.

IDF Soldiers killed in Gaza:

Master Sgt. (res.) Zechariah Pesach Haber, 32, of the 14th Armored Brigade's 87th Battalion, from Jerusalem.

Sgt. Maj. (res.) Yair Katz, 34, of the 14th Armored Brigade's 87th Battalion, from Holon.

The IDF is in the process of withdrawing its 36th Division, which includes the Golani Brigade, the Sixth, Seventh, 188th, and Engineering Corps.

Israel confirmed the murders of hostages Itay Sabirsky and Yossi Sharabi by Hamas terrorists. Agam Goldstein Almog, 17, a former hostage has begun speaking about her experience in captivity. To read more, click here.

Israel has launched a new website with information, photos and videos of the Hamas Oct. 7 massacre. The website has already garnered over 43 million views. To view the website, click here.

[Last night, NBC Nightly News had a segment on the suffering of children in Gaza. It is heartbreaking to see children suffering anywhere, for any reason. But the only thing I could think of is why don't the Palestinians lay down their arms and stop fighting Israel? Instead of chanting, "From the River to the Sea" they should be chanting, "We're very sorry -- please forgive us."

Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan finally surrendered, albeit after millions of their people were killed and their countries destroyed. But at that point they realized that their war was over, and they said sorry and begged for forgiveness. The Palestinians need to do the same. They need to come to us on their knees and beg us to forgive them for murdering our children and grandparents, raping our wives and daughters, mutilating, beheading, burning our brothers and sisters in their homes and peaceful gatherings. They need to return the hostages they took, whom they have brutalized and tortured for over 100 days - and beg us, and them, for forgiveness.

If they truly say sorry, the children of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob will forgive them. Because all we really want is to live in peace, with our neighbors. But instead of begging for forgiveness they continue to fire rockets at us. And they continue to torture and rape our brothers and sisters in captivity. And they continue to pledge to destroy us, and teach their children to do the same.

Iran is willing to fight to the last Palestinian. Unless the Palestinians wake up to their reality, admit their mistakes, ask for forgiveness and pledge to live in peace, Israel simply has no choice but to continue its war against Hamas until it is eliminated. And children in Gaza will continue to suffer.

It's time for the Palestinians to say sorry. Without that, there can never be peace. ]

The French Embassy in Israel announced that Qatar and France have begun a joint operation to transfer medication to 45 hostages. The medications are limited to treatments for chronic diseases.

IDF troops engaged in a gunfight with 20 drug smugglers attempting to cross the Egyptian border from Sinai. One smuggler was killed and several others hit, all on the Egyptian side of the border. One IDF soldier was lightly injured.

According to the Association of Contractors and Builders in Israel, almost 50% of the building sites in the country are shut down because of a severe shortage of labor. Around 100,000 Palestinians worked in the industry, but they have been barred from entering Israel since Oct. 7. Also, several thousands of foreign workers, mainly from Moldova and China, have left the country since Oct. 7. We end the week with two quick examples of Israeli humorous spoofs that appeared in an otherwise very sober few days
JAN 12
This was not an easy week for Israel. There was the tragic explosion of Israeli explosives, caused by our own munitions, that killed six combat engineers; tragically, additional soldiers died in other locations during the day. And yesterday, far from the battlefield, Israel was fighting again, this time in the Hague, defending itself against charges brought by South Africa that Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza. The case has Israeli officials worried—a negative ruling by the court could have problematic repercussions of numerous sorts. A potential hostage deal got some attention, but as of this writing, there is no concrete progress—and the hostages, in conditions that one shudders to imagine, approach their 100th day in captivity.

As sobering as all this is, the war in Israel is beginning to feel less like an acute crisis and the beginning of a “new normal.” How long that “normal” will last, no one can say. And the tragic losses continue to rip the hearts out of Israelis of all persuasions.

Yet, perhaps because the acute sense of crisis has abated, Israelis are beginning to allow themselves sorts of humor that one probably would not have seen a few weeks ago. Today, to close out our week on Israel from the Inside, we share two spoofs that have gone a bit viral on Israeli social media.

I first saw the humorous video below covered in Yisrael Hayom. As the story was told there, Hanan Isaacson (32), from Beit Shemesh, was called to military service, like many thousands of others, on October 7. He has been stationed largely in Judea and Samaria (the West Bank), at times not far from Ramallah. And throughout, he has been taking videos to share what he and his fellow troops are experiencing.
The video below, filmed in the Ramallah area, understandably went viral. Isaacson and his friends found an old sofa in the area, and decided to perform a new opening for the now classic American TV series “Friends,” with the iconic sofa and the same melody.
Isaacson said that they came across the sofa during a foot patrol, and upon seeing it, the idea came to them. It took, he said, just a few minutes to film and a few more minutes to edit. Then he uploaded it and the rest is history.

For those who don’t recall the original opening from Friends, we’re providing that below. Then comes Isaacson’s spoof, brought to you from the IDF on the outskirts of Ramallah.
WATCH

Filming and editing by Hanan Isaacson. Video via Israeli social media.
Israelis are facing an unfolding crisis, but also an important opportunity to rebuild. If you would like to share our conversation about what they are feeling and what is happening that the English press can’t cover, please subscribe today.

State Comptroller Matanyahu Englman has begun an investigation into the failings of the IDF leading up to the October 7 Hamas massacre. The investigation will also include the government's conduct in the 2 years leading up to the war. For more, click here.

A Saudi newspaper reported that the Hamas leaders in Gaza are making decisions regarding the fighting and hostages without consulting with the Hamas political leaders living abroad. The report describes Yahya Sinwar's brother Mohammed and the commander of the Hamas military wing, Mohammed Deif, as the most important Hamas leaders in Gaza. The paper also reported that Hamas leaders have begun evacuating their families to Egypt, either clandestinely or openly.

Prime Minister Netanyahu posted a video yesterday where he said, "I want to make a few points absolutely clear. Israel has no intention of permanently occupying Gaza or displacing its civilian population. Israel is fighting Hamas terrorists, not the Palestinian population, and we are doing so in full compliance with international law. Our goal is to rid Gaza of Hamas terrorists and free our hostages. Once this is achieved, Gaza can be demilitarized and de-radicalized, thereby creating a possibility for a better future for Israel and Palestinians alike."

Diplomatic Endeavors: Blinken’s Crucial Visit Amidst Israel’s Defense Efforts
January 9, 2024
As the tension in the Gaza Strip and along Israel’s northern border with Lebanon intensifies Israel braces for a series of high-profile meetings with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Blinken’s visit, his fifth since the outbreak of hostilities with Hamas on October 7, underscores the growing US concern over the potential escalation of the conflict.
Blinken’s agenda in Tel Aviv is packed with meetings with key Israeli leaders including President Isaac Herzog, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. These discussions are expected to delve into the complexities of the ongoing conflict, the humanitarian situation in Gaza, and strategies to prevent further escalation. The US’s diplomatic engagements aim to mitigate the heightened tensions between Israel and Hezbollah
The US’s diplomatic engagements aim to mitigate the heightened tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. This comes as cross-border attacks from Lebanon continue unabated since the onset of the war between Israel and Hamas, which led to the tragic loss of life and the abduction of civilians.

The Biden administration’s involvement in seeking a diplomatic resolution highlights the urgency to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and to bring an end to the fighting. With the US presidential election on the horizon, President Biden faces the challenge of balancing strong support for Israel’s right to defend itself while addressing the humanitarian concerns and the progressive voices within his party.

Blinken’s visit also focuses on Israel’s transition to a less intensive phase in the war against Hamas, as outlined by IDF Spokesperson Daniel Hagari. This shift aims to reduce the intensity of fighting and facilitate the return of Gazans to their homes in the northern part of the Strip.

As part of the US’s diplomatic efforts, special envoy Amos Hochstein has also been dispatched to the region to engage in talks aimed at lowering tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. These efforts reflect the US’s commitment to finding peaceful solutions and preventing the conflict from escalating into a full-scale war.

Blinken’s meetings in Israel are expected to yield concrete results, with an emphasis on improving the humanitarian situation in Gaza and facilitating the delivery of aid to civilians. Discussions will also touch upon the future governance and security of Gaza post-conflict, with Israel and its neighbors expected to play key roles in the reconstruction and stabilization of the area.

In conclusion, Secretary Blinken’s visit to Israel is a crucial step in the US’s diplomatic efforts to support a resolution to the current conflict. It highlights the importance of maintaining strong ties with Israel while addressing the humanitarian needs of the region. As Israel continues to uphold its values of democracy, security, and the pursuit of peace, these diplomatic endeavors are pivotal in shaping the future of the region and reinforcing Israel’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens and contributing to regional stability.

A civilian was seriously wounded by an anti-tank missile strike, from Lebanon, on a Greek Orthodox church in the Christian village of Iqrit in Western Galilee today. When IDF forces and first responders arrived at the scene, another anti-tank missile was fired, leading to an intense firefight. Another anti-tank missile hit several chicken coops in the border community of Dovev, causing extensive property damage but no casualties. Earlier today, IDF forces struck multiple Hezbollah targets in Lebanon after rockets were launched at Israeli targets.

The IDF presented a plan to the Cabinet for phase 3 of the ground war in Gaza. The plan includes the repositioning of forces in northern Gaza to defensive positions, continuing the offensive in Khan Younis, raids and air strikes against Hamas targets throughout Gaza, the construction of a one-kilometer-deep security zone along the Gaza-Israel border, and the limited return of civilians to northern Gaza. Phase 3 is expected to last between 9 months and 2 years, and will culminate in the destruction of Hamas military capabilities but not its total elimination.

IDF soldiers killed in Gaza:

Staff Sgt. (res.) Elisha Yehonatan Lober, 24, 179th Reserve Armored Brigade’s 8104th Battalion, from Yitzhar.

Sgt. First Class (res.) Joseph Yosef Gitarts, 25, 179th Reserve Armored Brigade’s 7029th Battalion, from Tel Aviv.

Staff Sergeant Daniel Nachmani, 21, 188th Armored Brigade, from Kfar Saba, killed near the Lebanese border.

US officials have reportedly been attempting to identify Palestinians who would be able to take up leadership roles in Gaza and are preparing to train the Palestinian Authority's security forces for deployment in Gaza. The International Atomic Energy Agency said that Iran has increased the rate at which it is enriching uranium to up to 60% purity, close to weapons grade, since November.

US forces conducted airstrikes against 3 Iranian backed militias, including Iraq-based Kataib Hezbollah, after militias attacked Erbil Air Base and other targets, wounding 3 US servicemen. For more, click here. https://www.ynetnews.com/article/sysoqqdw6?utm_source=email

Rockets were fired at southern and central Israel from Gaza today. A residential building was hit in Ashkelon, injuring 2 elderly women. Several rockets fell in open areas in Beersheba, a rocket fell on a Tel Aviv beach and on a street in Holon.

Several rockets were fired into Israel from Lebanon. The IDF responded with strikes against Hezbollah targets.

IDF troops are operating in the area of Jabalya in northern Gaza, attacking and destroying Hamas command centers, tunnels, rockets, weapons depots and eliminating terrorists. Much of the Hamas terror infrastructure has been found embedded within or beneath schools and residential buildings.

The Shin Bet, 551st Brigade reserve forces and Shayetet 13 commandos raided the Hamas General Security headquarters in Jabaliya, where surveillance and control equipment, weapons and maps were found.

IDF forces are also surrounding the city of Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, where the Hamas leadership is thought to be hiding.

The IDF is taking extreme measures to avoid civilian casualties in Gaza. At least a third of the people killed in Gaza were terrorists. Civilians also have been killed by Hamas rocket misfires and as a result of being used as human shields by the terrorists.

The names of 5 IDF soldiers killed in Gaza have been released:

Sergeant Yakir Yedidya Schenkolewski, 21 years old from Migdal Oz, 188th Armored Brigade.
Captain Eitan Fisch, 23 years old, from the yishuv of Paduel, 188th Armored Brigade.
Sgt. Tuval Yaakov Tsanani, 20 years old from Kiryat Gat, 188th Armored Brigade.
Captain Yahel Gazit, 24, a 188th Armored Brigade officer, from Rakefet, 188th Armored Brigade.
Sergeant First Class (res.) Gil Daniels, 34, from Ashdod, 261st Infantry Reserve Brigade.
Saudi media reported that explosions were heard in Yemen's capital last night, assumed to be the result of an Israeli strike.

US officials are saying that Hamas is not releasing the rest of the female hostages because they do not want them to talk about what was, and is being, done to them in captivity and they have witnessed. Testimony from people who witness the atrocities committed by Hamas on Oct. 7 continues to be released and publicized. The eye witness accounts of the brutal gang rapes, mutilations and executions of Israeli women are too painful to read or listen too, but they must be heard and shared.

The civilized world must know about these barbaric crimes to understand that Israel has no choice but to completely eliminate the Hamas terrorists from Gaza. There can be no cease-fire until the terrorists are either out of Gaza or in Hell (the latter being preferred). Hamas has made it very clear that they will perpetrate the same barbaric crimes of Oct. 7 again and again. And their next targets will be the women of Western Europe and the US, if Israel does not stop them now.

Israel is fighting not only for its own safety, but for the safety of the entire world. It is truly a battle of good against evil. Good will prevail. It must.

1. Reserve Master Sergeant Neriya Shaer, aged 36, from Yavne, a fighter in Battalion 6655, 55th Brigade ('Spearhead Brigade').

2. Reserve Sergeant Ben Zussman, aged 22, from Jerusalem, a fighter in the reconnaissance unit of Battalion 601, 401st Brigade ('Iron Trails Brigade'), Combat Engineering Corps.

3. Sergeant Binyamin Yehoshua Needham, aged 19, from Zichron Yaakov, a fighter in Battalion 601, 401st Brigade ('Iron Trails Brigade'), Combat Engineering Corps.

Thousands of people today attended the funeral of Col. Asaf Hamami, commander of Gaza Division’s southern brigade, who fell in battle on October 7 and whose body is being held in Gaza.

Sgt. Aviad Frija, the soldier who shot Yuval Dror Castelman during last Thursday's terror attack in Jerusalem, has been arrested, based on the investigation into the tragic event. Castelman was a civilian who shot at the terrorists to neutralize them. He was caught on video on his knees with his hands raised in the air before being shot.

The Houthis attacked 3 commercial ships, which they associated in some way with Israel in the southern Red Sea on Sunday. The US blamed Iran for enabling the attacks. US warships in the area came to the assistance of the ships and shot down several attack drones.
