EGYPT: Christian Woman Brutally Attacked and Killed

Mary Sameh George, a 25-year-old Christian who lived with her parents and sister in Cairo, was brutally attacked and killed on March 28th by pro-Muslim Brotherhood demonstrators.
Mary was on her way to deliver groceries and other necessities to a poor family in the Ein Shams area, as she did every Friday, when she was stopped by a group of protesters. When they spotted Mary's gold cross necklace, they dragged her out of the car and repeatedly stabbed her before finally choking her to death.
The family of this young Christian woman was understandably devastated when they learned of the murder. In fact, her fiancé's mother was so grief-stricken that she died shortly after learning of Mary's death.
Bring Mary's family, fiancé and other loved ones to our Lord in prayer, asking Him to grant them His peace which surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Pray also that they will find hope in Christ's resurrection and sure promise that they will be reunited in heaven. Until then, may they look to Jesus for the strength and grace to forgive those who ended Mary's life so tragically. Intercede on behalf of those guilty of this crime, as well as all those in Egypt who oppose the Gospel...that they may come to experience the saving power of Jesus Christ.

SYRIA: Elderly Church Leader Murdered in Homs

Father Frans van der Lugt, a 75-year-old Dutch priest who had lived and worked in Syria for more than 40 years, was murdered in the city of Homs on April 7th. Father Frans was reportedly removed forcibly from his house and pulled into the garden, where he was shot twice in the head.
As the Syrian civil war approached Homs, the priest resolved to stay with the dwindling Christian community that remained. Once home to an estimated 60,000 Christians, fewer than 30 believers now live in the Old City sector of Homs.
Islamist militant groups have increasingly targeted Syria's religious and ethnic minorities. Concern continues for several kidnapped church leaders who remain missing since 2013, including two priests who were kidnapped in February, two bishops abducted months later in April, and another priest who hasn't been seen since July.
In the midst of much instability and great personal risk, pray for the remaining Christians in Homs. May they continue to look to the Lord for daily sustenance and strength, and may their faith in Him inspire others to enter into relationship with our resurrected Saviour. Pray also for those mourning the loss of Father Frans, both in Syria and in his homeland. May they rest in the assurance that he is now experiencing life to the fullest with Christ.

PAKISTAN: Christian Couple Sentenced to Death for 'Blasphemous' Texts

A Pakistani court has sentenced a Christian couple to death for insulting Mohammed and the Quran. Shafqat Emmanuel, 44, and his wife, Shaguftah, 41, who live in Gojra, Punjab, were convicted on April 4th of sending "blasphemous" text messages.
The complainant, Muhammad Hussain, alleged he was praying on July 18th of last year when he received blasphemous text messages on his cell phone. Muhammad's call data reportedly revealed the messages were sent from Shaguftah's cell phone number. The police, however, were unable to recover the SIM card from her phone, and Shaguftah argued that she lost her cell phone a month prior to the incident.
Nevertheless, the Gojra police detained the couple, along with their four children (ages five through 13), pressuring them to name someone who could have sent the messages. At last report, the couple was planning to appeal the verdict.
Pray that mercy will be extended to this Christian couple by those of the judicial system, granting them a swift release. Please also bring this couple's children to our Lord in prayer, as Shafqat and Shaguftah have been unable to visit with them since their arrest last summer. May God strengthen the faith of each family member, encouraging them to trust Him wholeheartedly throughout this ordeal. Finally, please intercede on behalf of two other believers, Sawan Masih and Asia Bibi, who have also been sentenced to death for blasphemy in Pakistan.

This Good Friday, April 18th, Christians in Turkey will be holding a special remembrance service for the seventh anniversary of three Christians -- Necati Aydin, Ugur Yuksel and Tilmann Geske -- who were brutally killed in Malatya at a Bible publishing house in April of 2007. These three martyrs lived their lives faithfully for Jesus, and were willing to follow Him regardless of the cost. While we can certainly rejoice that through Christ's death and resurrection they are now fully alive in eternity with Him, please do pray for their grieving friends and family during this time of remembrance. "Understanding Victory"


"When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost." John 19:30


We are getting ready to celebrate the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. It is said that hindsight is 20/20. On this side of the cross we have a clear understanding that what was done was the greatest act of love and complete victory. But to those who were there it looked like defeat. As they watched the events of that evening unfold, as they saw their Jesus being arrested, tried, convicted and crucified all they could see were their hopes and dreams being destroyed.


When we are going through times of great testing, we tend to be more like those disciples. We don't view the situation as something good. We can't see how anything good can come out of what we are going through. It looks hopeless. It often looks like defeat. But may I remind you that even in the darkest time, even when all hope seems lost, even when you don't understand why, God hasn't left, He is watching over the situation, and He is still in control.


The situations that look like darkness, He can bring light from. What looks like death, He can bring forth life. What looks like defeat, He can bring forth victory from--- the cross and the empty tomb are a testimony to that.


Don't look at your situation as "defeat", trust that God somehow, someway, is working all things together for your good. Even if you don't see any good in it, and even if you don't understand it now, perhaps you may never understand it all this side of heaven, but like the old song says, "We'll understand it better by and by".


Have a great day. Even though we may not understand what looks like defeat, God is still working to bring victory.

RECENT PRISONER UPDATES
CHINA: Detained Christian Leads Fellow Prisoners to Christ

During a recent visit with his family, imprisoned believer Wenxi Li excitedly shared that several more prisoners have become Christians after hearing the Gospel message! Previous to this, while awaiting his trial last year, Wenxi had led three other prisoners to Christ.
Wenxi, who has been imprisoned since his arrest in December of 2012, was permitted to visit with his wife and family this past January. His wife, Cai Hong Li, reports that he is doing well.
In June of 2013, Wenxi was sentenced to two years in prison for his role with Enyu Bookstore in the city of Taiyuan. Officials also seized hundreds of books from Wenxi. (For more information on his arrest, go to www.persecution.net/cn-2013-07-25.htm.)
While we will certainly continue to pray for Wenxi's release, let us also rejoice in the ways in which he is sharing the "Good News" while imprisoned! Pray that the seeds planted in these other prisoners' lives will now grow and mature, and in time produce a great harvest. Thank the Lord for allowing Wenxi and his family to have some meaningful time to visit together and encourage one another. Pray that they will soon be permanently reunited!.

IRAN: Prison Sentences Upheld for Six Believers

Six Christians from Shiraz, who were sentenced to various prison terms last year, had their sentences upheld on March 29th following an appeal.
In July of 2013, following a raid on their prayer meeting, the six were charged with "action against the national security" and "propaganda against the order of the system." (For more information on the raid, visit our website at www.persecution.net/eight-christians-sentenced-to-long-prison-sentences.htm.) Another two Christians who were also arrested at the time, Roxana Forghi and Shahin Lahouti, have since been released.
The six remaining in detention are Mohammad Roghangir (six-year sentence), Massoud Rezai (five-year sentence), Mehdi Ameruni and Bijan Farokhpour Haghighi (three-year sentences), Suroush Saraie (two-and-a-half-year sentence), and Eskandar Rezai (one-year sentence).
As these believers and their loved ones now try to cope with this latest disappointment, pray that they will look to Jesus and not lose heart (Hebrews 12:3). May they use their time in prison to be "salt" and "light" to those around them, prompting many to learn more about the Saviour for whose cause they are presently suffering. Please also lift up the country of Iran to our Lord, asking Him to encourage the growth of His church and equip His people to do the good works He has prepared in advance for them (Ephesians 2:10).

TURKMENISTAN: Follower of Jesus Endures Detention for His Faith

Umid Gojayev, a 30-year-old husband and father of three young children, is continuing to be held in detention because of his faith.
In early 2012, Umid had an argument with four neighbours over access to a well where they live in Dashoguz. In the scuffle, Umid was forced to defend himself and hit one of the men on the head with a brick, causing injury. The man filed a complaint against Umid with local police. Several days later, Umid and his family reconciled with the man he injured and paid for his hospital expenses. Although the victim refused to press charges, when police learned that Umid was a Christian, they insisted on bringing the case to court.
Umid was sentenced to four years in prison on charges of "hooliganism," even though none of the other men involved in the melee were prosecuted. One of the investigators reportedly told Umid's relative that because their family member is a believer, the court will not forgive him.
After nearly two years in prison, there have been four general amnesties in which prisoners charged under the same law as Umid have been released, yet he remains in prison. "Umid was told in the labour camp, he is not being included in the amnesties because he reads the Bible," explains a Christian who knows the imprisoned believer.
As a result of his imprisonment, Umid's wife, Malahat, was forced to leave her job and care for their children. The family is struggling to make ends meet without their primary breadwinner.
Intercede on behalf of Umid, Malahat and their children, asking the Lord to provide a way for Umid to be released from prison. Pray that, in the meantime, they will continue to glorify Him in all things and in all situations. Ask God to meet every need Malahat now faces as she raises the children on her own, encouraging fellow believers to rally around this family in prayer and tangible support. Finally, pray for the authorities involved in this case...that they will seek justice and truth on behalf of Umid and his struggling family.

God's Invisible Hands


God's loving hands are holding me
Through many trials His hand I see.
No, we cannot touch His scarred hand,
But how He holds us again and again.

His lovely hands were scarred for me
I'll praise Him throughout eternity.

He holds me gently day and night.


It does not matter what the trial
He always understands the pain,

God's gentle hands are oh so warm they reach out to you and me. We feel so safe in God's invisible hands. No we cannot touch them but how we feel them at times so close.
I do believe when God looks upon His hands He does see us His creation. When we see God's hands we are reminded of the pain He bore at Calvary...
He bore it all in love and He says I would do it again. Oh, what a Mighty God we serve. God will never forsake His own...
His eyes are forever watching from His throne. He has made known to us the path of life and in His presence there is fullness of joy.
We are not just His creation we are engraved upon His palms for all eternity. He is the first and last and for evermore!!

KENYA: Six Fatalities After Church Attacked by Gunmen

On the morning of March 23rd, as a congregation gathered for worship at their church in Likoni, a hooded gunman burst through the church's back door and began firing indiscriminately. Those who tried to flee through the church's main door were met with gunfire from several more assailants waiting outside.
"They forced their way through the rear door, shot the watchman who staggered into the church before falling down. One attacker shouted 'Allah Akbar!' and started shooting in every direction," a devastated survivor shared.
As suddenly as they had come, the attackers abruptly and calmly walked away, disappearing into the surrounding slums. Police later found a box containing 36 rounds of ammunition that had been left at the scene.
Six Christians died from the assault, while over 20 were hospitalized. Many of the injured had gunshot wounds while others suffered soft tissue injuries due to their panicked attempts to escape the church.
Although, at last report, no group had claimed responsibility for the attack, it is widely suspected to be the work of the Somali Islamic terrorist group, Al Shabaab, or its sympathizers.
As many now grieve the loss of loved ones due to this unwarranted attack, pray that they will look to the Lord for comfort and daily strength. May He surround those suffering from resulting physical and emotional wounds with His love, and may their recovery be prompt and complete. Please also intercede for the gunmen, that they will repent of this destructive violence and develop a personal and life-transforming relationship with Jesus Christ.

INDIA: Believers Targeted for their Faith Throughout Country

Around midnight on March 5th, approximately 30 Hindu militants forcefully entered the home of Pastor Ramsai Netam in Bhanupratappur, Chhattisgarh, accusing him of forcefully converting people and practising witchcraft. Dragging him to a cultural hall, the mob then beat the pastor, as well as his two sons who tried to protect him. The next morning, the police arrived at the scene and brought Pastor Ramsai to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for a serious head injury. However, the police recorded the cause of the wound as an "injury sustained from falling from a tree."
In Kandhamal, Odisha, militants threatened to physically assault a group of Christians on March 11th after the believers had gathered stones for the construction of a church building. Since the unprecedented violence that took place after the assassination of a Hindu leader in Odisha (formerly called Orissa) in August of 2008, life has become difficult for Christians. Believers are boycotted, discriminated against and threatened by Hindu militants on a regular basis because of their faith in Christ. Elsewhere in the country, three Christians were arrested on March 16th in Betul city, Madhya Pradesh, after Hindu militants, accompanied by police and media, stopped a Sunday worship meeting and accused the believers of forceful conversion. When police asked the congregation how much money they had received to convert, the "church members responded that they came to the church by their own accord to pray, that they did not receive any money, and that there was no case of forceful conversion," one of the Christians explained. Under pressure from the militants, the police then brought the pastor and two other believers to the police station where they were beaten and a case was registered against them. Thankfully, they were released on bail on March 27th after the intervention of area church leaders.
Amid this climate of hostility, Christians in the country are growing anxious as general elections begin this month. A Hindu nationalist party is predicted to win, raising concerns of even more violence being perpetrated against the church.
As Christians across India face attacks and false accusations because of their faith, pray that the church throughout the country will be a unified and bold example of God's love. Ask Him to completely heal and restore those who were injured or arrested in recent weeks. May their resolve to follow Christ only be refined and strengthened by these attempts to stop their witness. Ask our Lord to encourage believers during this election period in India, trusting that His will be done.

URGENT PRISONER UPDATES
PAKISTAN: Christians Sentenced to Death for Blasphemy

Sawan Masih, a Christian road sweeper and father of three from Lahore, was sentenced to death for blasphemy on March 27th. Sawan was also fined 200,000 rupees (approximately $2,250 CAD). The trial was conducted in the Lahore Camp Jail, where Sawan has been unable to leave due to the threats on his life.
Sawan's sentence is based on a conversation that occurred between him and his Muslim friend in March of 2013. Two days after the conversation, more than 3,000 Muslims pillaged Sawan's community in Joseph Colony, looting and torching Christian homes, shops and churches, and displacing hundreds of families. Sawan and his family are reportedly shocked by the verdict. An appeal is being filed with the Lahore High Court, which must sign off on death penalty cases.
Meanwhile, the latest hearing in the appeal of Asia Bibi against her own death sentence for blasphemy took place on March 26th at Lahore High Court. It lasted just 10 minutes due to the failure of the prosecution lawyer to attend. The next hearing has been scheduled for April 14th. Ask God to grant wisdom and favour to both Sawan's and Asia's legal teams as they face the judicial authorities in Pakistan. While lifting these dear persecuted believers to our Lord, pray that they and their loved ones will be strong and courageous, resting in God's promise that He will neither leave nor forsake them (Deuteronomy 31:6). May their appeals be successful, so that they may soon be released from prison and reunited with their concerned families. Finally, pray that Sawan and Asia will serve as bold testimonies of God's goodness, leading many to faith in Jesus.

Today's scripture text offers sound advise regarding offering praises to God constantly because He is worthy of all honor, worship and praises. The scripture also encourages us to offer praises to God regardless of the situation. If we are experiencing troubles, praise God. When sickness occur, praise God, heartache and pain, praise God; just simply praise Him. Whatever the situation is it could be much worse; therefore, take comfort in knowing that God of the universe is in control and as promised will never leave nor forsake His own. He asks that we cast all our cares upon Him (1 Peter 5:7) and leave worry and concerns behind.
Offering sacrifices of praises to God regardless of what we may be experiencing is recognizing that He is the God of our salvation, our refuge, our high tower and is worthy to be praised (Psalm 46:1). This mean God is our all in all. This in of itself is praise worthy. It is just good to give thanks to God as this is a form of worship.
When we can praise God in the midst of trouble is evidence of one's spiritual growth as well as one's relationship with God. As praises go up to God blessings come down from Him.
Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him.

NIGERIA: More than 100 Killed in Brutal Attacks

More than 150 people were killed recently in separate attacks on predominantly Christian villages. Late at night on March 14th, suspected Fulani militants armed with guns and machetes raided three villages -- Ugwar Sankwai, Ungwan Gata andChenshyi -- in Kaduna state, killing at least 114 people. Many of the victims were burned alive. The casualties included a pastor's wife and her three children.
Two days later, militants suspected to be part of the group Boko Haram killed two people in Pela Birni village of Borno state. Two churches and many homes were also set on fire. "The gunmen invaded our village at about 10 o'clock in the evening on Sunday. They started shouting 'God is Great.' In some houses, they did not shoot at the residents but ordered them to vacate their houses and set them ablaze."
Pray that God will comfort and heal all those who are injured, traumatized or grieving as a result of this senseless violence. Ask Him to bring an end to these murderous attacks in Nigeria, and pray that those in authority will do more to stand against this injustice. Lift up both the Fulani and Boko Haram militants to our Lord, asking Him to work powerfully in their hearts that they may repent and follow Him.

TANZANIA: Bombings Launched Against Three Churches

Christians are said to be "shaken and afraid" after suspected Islamic militants launched attacks on churches in three different locations on the semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar last month. While Tanzania's population is 54 percent Christian, Zanzibar is more than 97 percent Muslim.
On February 15th, a homemade bomb was thrown at the door of a church building in the Tomondo area near Stone Town. Another bomb was launched at the building the next day. Thankfully, nobody was injured in these attacks.
Later that month, on February 23rd, a bomb exploded near the entrance to a church building in Kijito Upele-Fuoni, outside Zanzibar city, just before the end of a Sunday service. Several people suffered minor injuries. The following day, a device was detonated outside another church in Stone Town. A restaurant located in the tourist area was also targeted.
Attacks on believers have been rising in the area since 2010. Most of the assaults have been attributed to the Islamic political group UAMSHO (Association of Islamic Awareness and Public Discourse), which has been calling for the separation of Zanzibar from mainland Tanzania.
Ask God to fill the Christians in Zanzibar with His peace, praying that they will stand firm in their faith. Thank Him that no one was killed in the bomb blasts. Pray that the officials responding to this recent violence will be granted wisdom. May they commit to protecting all citizens, regardless of their faith. Pray that our Lord will continue His mighty work in Zanzibar, enabling His church to grow in both faithfulness and number.

UZBEKISTAN: Christian's Home Raided; New Decree Increases Repression

On January 20th, Natalya Gaiyer had her home raided and several hundred Christian books confiscated by secret police working for the National Security Service (NSS) and Anti-Terrorism Department. Natalya, who lives in Tashkent and is a member of an officially registered Baptist church, was also ordered to pay a fine equal to about $130, at least three months' salary in Uzbekistan, for possessing the books.
Close surveillance of all religious communities by the NSS secret police is a standard part of the country's mechanism of repression. A week after the raid, on January 27th, a new censorship decree was established, stating that books and other materials encouraging individuals to change or "distort" their beliefs are now banned. As well, the decree imposes controls on the production, distribution and import of religious materials. With this new decree, authorities now have a "legal" basis for their strict restrictions.
Let us pray for this dear faithful Christian, asking God to provide for her material and spiritual needs at this time. May fellow believers from Natalya's church stand with her and bring much needed encouragement. Despite the increased restrictions, pray that the Christians of Uzbekistan will be resolute in their desire to share the "Good News" with their neighbours. Ask God to work in the lives of the country's authorities, so that they may respect religious freedom for all.

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble!" Psalm 46:1

God intended Himself to be the great fountain of supply to His creatures. All are to be dependent on Him — and to look for their suppliesfrom Him. Just so, the believer is to apply to God for all. Ample provision is made — but it is only in Jesus. Promises are given — but they are to be fulfilled by Jesus. He possesses all fullness, and as such He presents Himself to us as His needy dependent creatures — and says, "Look unto Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other!" Isaiah 45:22
This is the business of faith and prayer — to look to Jesus, and apply to Jesus for all that we need. Let us consider these words as spoken unto us every day — as calling us away from dependence on the creature, and as directing us how to act under all circumstances. It is Jesuswho speaks. Jesus, as God. Jesus, as the Savior. Jesus, full of sympathy and power. Let us therefore listen to — and act upon His Word.
"Look unto Me — and be supplied. Whatever you need, either for body or soul — come to Me for it. I have the very blessing which you require. I am prepared to supply you with it, except it would be to your injury for Me to do so. You must leave Me to judge whether it will be for your good — and whether this is the best time for you to have it; but if it is — I will surely give it to you. Bring all your needs to Me, express all your desires before Me, exercise faith in Me — and your supplies are certain!"
Let us then leave off complaining, repining, and fretting; and let us look to Jesus for whatever we need, for all we need, and whenever we need. He is able to do more for us, than we are able to ask or think; and He loves to be applied to, for He rejoices to supply our needs.
"Look unto Me — and be strengthened." We are very weak and feeble — and we need much strength. We have . . . .
  crosses to carry, 
  burdens to bear, and
  innumerable difficulties to overcome.
Our journey is long, 
the way is rough, 
and our faith is feeble.
But Jesus is the Strong One, who has all strength in Himself — and that strength He imparts to the weak, the weary, and the wavering, who put their trust in Him. By looking to Him, or exercising faith in Him — we find strength flow into our soul; and we become strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might. Absent from Jesus, or neglecting to exercise faith in Jesus — we are weak and faint, and are sure to be overcome. If therefore we would be strong to labor, or to fight the Lord's battles, or to travel our pilgrim way — we must keep the eye of faith fixed on Jesus, and seek our strength from Him.
"Look unto Me — and be comforted." We are poor comfortless things in ourselves — and we meet with much to cast us down and make us unhappy. We daily need daily comfort — as much as we need daily food. Jesus is the Comforter of those who are cast down. He comforts us with loving words, with holy communion with Himself, with sweet meditations, with holy foretastes of heaven. His presence is the joy of His people; and His presence will make them happy everywhere. Let us then, when our souls are cast down, when the springs of joy are low, when everything around and within us is depressing — look to Jesus, and He will comfort us with His love!
"Look unto Me — and be counseled." We often need advice, for we know not what to do, or which way to go. Friends cannot help us; our way appears to be hedged up, nor can we find our paths. We feel at times, that we would give anything if we only knew what to do — or which way to go. We are in deep perplexity, in profound distress. Now is the time to apply to, and prove the kindness of, the "Wonderful Counselor."
Jesus says, "Look unto Me — I will teach you and instruct you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you, and My eye shall be upon you." Precious Savior! He loves to be consulted, nor will He allow any sincere and simple believer, to consult Him in vain. He knows our path— He will point out our way. He understands our difficulty — and will show us how to escape it!
"Look unto me — and be saved." Saved from every danger. Saved from every foe. Saved from sin — and all its penal consequences. Saved fully. Saved freely. Saved eternally. Jesus loves to save. He saves all who look to Him. Let us therefore look unto Him — in all times of danger, when assaulted by our foes, and when our own hearts mislead us. Let us look to Him all through our life.
And when called to face death and eternity — let us especially look unto Him. He will be with us in the dark valley — and whisper peace. He will go with us across the Jordan — and cheer our sinking hearts. He will guide us to the golden gates — and lead us up the glorious streets, and present us unto His Father!
O my soul, look to Jesus . . . 
  whenever Satan assaults you,
  whenever foes beset you,
  whenever needs oppress you, and
  when death stares you in the face!
Look to Jesus for grace — and He will bestow it!
Look to Jesus for strength — and He will impart it!
Look to Jesus for comfort — and He will confer it!
Look to Jesus for counsel — and He will give it!
Look to Jesus for salvation — and He will confer it.
Look for all that He has promised, for all that you feel you need — and He will not deny you what is best for you.

SRI LANKA: Pastor's Family Attacked for Christian Activities

On the evening of February 16th, a mob of approximately 250 villagers led by 11 Buddhist monks stormed a pastor's property in Asgiriya, Kandy district, demanding that worship services at the site cease immediately. The monks belong to the hardline nationalist organization, "Bodu Bala Sena" (BBS), which means "Buddhist Strength Force."
The pastor, in response, explained to the mob that he has the right to religious freedom. However, the mob dragged the pastor and his wife from their home and physically assaulted them. The couple's 18-year-old daughter was also verbally abused.
Afterwards, the General Secretary of the BBS gathered the villagers outside the pastor's house and warned them against such "traitors." He threatened the same treatment for any villager supporting Christian worship.
Thank God for protecting this pastor and his family from serious harm. As they continue to serve their Saviour, pray that He will grant them courage in the face of very real risks. Ask that wisdom and strength be given to this pastor and other church leaders throughout Sri Lanka, as they often are targeted in acts of persecution. Please also remember the villagers and monks who launched this attack. May they hear the Good News and also come to faith in Jesus.

TURKEY: Suspects in Murder Case Temporarily Released

Five murder suspects on trial for torturing and killing three Christians in Malatya were released on March 7th. The five are accused of the murders of Necati Aydin, Ugur Yuksel and Tilmann Geske at a Bible publishing house in April of 2007. Under a new judicial package passed by the country's parliament in February, the detention limit for suspects on trial who have not yet been convicted was reduced from ten to five years, resulting in the release of the suspects. To track the five men, the Justice Minister has announced that four of the suspects will be electronically tagged, and the fifth monitored using different technology, as the tagging system will not work in the area where his family lives.
Susanne Geske, widow of the German victim Tilmann Geske, admitted that "the thought of meeting one of these men downtown, or at the mall" was something she and her children still living in Malatya would "have to get used to." "We're fine, and my kids are doing well," she continued. "Some in our church here are really upset. But God can do miracles.... And we will keep on loving our enemies."
In the midst of this unsettling news, pray that the families and friends of the murdered Christians will know the peace and very near presence of Jesus. Pray that, like Susanne, they will continue to love their enemies and pray for their persecutors (Matthew 5:44). Lift up the judges, lawyers and other judicial authorities before our Lord, asking Him to grant them wisdom and favour. May the guilty be brought to justice, and may they also come to a saving faith through Jesus Christ.

PAKISTAN: Asia Bibi's Appeal Hearing Postponed

The appeal hearing for Asia Bibi, a Christian woman imprisoned for blasphemy, has been postponed "to a later date." Asia was arrested in 2009 on charges of insulting Mohammed and later sentenced to death. Since then, she has been waiting for her appeal to be heard while being held in isolation at the women's prison in Sheikhupura (Punjab). Initially scheduled for March 17th, Asia's first hearing was cancelled due to the absence of one of the two presiding judges. Under Pakistani law, two judges have to be present in death penalty cases for the entire trial.
The high-profile case remains hugely controversial in Pakistan. The former Governor of Punjab, Salmaan Taseer, was killed by his bodyguard in January of 2011 after showing support for Asia. Then, two months later, Minorities Minister Shahbaz Bhatti, a Christian, was assassinated after voicing support for Asia and demanding reform of the country's blasphemy laws. Late last year, Pakistan's Federal Sharia Court demanded that blasphemy should carry a mandatory death sentence.
After this disappointing setback, pray that the Lord will continue to sustain Asia and her loved ones as they await the appeal hearing. May the judges and other authorities pursue justice, and may they also be protected from those who wish them harm as a result. Ask God to use this case for His good purposes, transforming the hearts and lives of those who do not yet know Him and encouraging believers to be courageous in their faith.

MISHKAN COVERING  (Part 1 of 2)
"As for the lower cover of the Tabernacle, make it of ten strips of cloth; make these of fine twisted linen, of blue, purple, and crimson yarns, with a design of cherubim worked into them." [Exodus (Shemot) 26. 1 Tanakh, Torah]
This covering is first of four made especially for the Tabernacle in the Wilderness — the LORD GOD wishes to dwell with HISpeople.  The Hebrew word for tabernacle is "mishkan" — and the word "sheka" means "to dwell."  Combined, one gets the word SHEKINAH meaning the place where GOD dwells.   The DIVINE ONE gives instructions concerning this curtain before any specifications for the other coverings of the building.  GOD'S dwelling is first "…in the beginning, GOD". . . HE begins from HIMSELF.
OMNISCIENT ALMIGHTY GOD begins HIS instructions for its building with the ceiling.  From the highest, GOD OMNIPOTENT comes down from Heaven, to earth.  Each covering represents the LORD MESSIAH YESHUA, the ONLY-BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD.
The Mishkan (Tabernacle) was to be of fine-twisted linen.  Twined refers to the work of bleaching the linen, then twisting it to force the water out.   Fine denotes spotlessness, innocence, and faultlessness as is seen in MESSIAH, the ANOINTED ONE.[Matthew 27. 3 - 4; 1 Peter 1. 19; 2. 22; 2 Corinthians 5. 21]   YESHUA ha’MASHIACH was righteous, loved righteousness, and did right in all things. [Hebrews 1. 9]   HE is the "RIGHTEOUS BRANCH." [Isaiah/Yeshayah 53. 11; Jeremiah/Yirmeyah 23. 5; Luke 23. 47; 1 John 2. 1]
This was the ceiling and completed the building.  Without this covering that Holy Structure would be open and unfinished.  So, when we step into the LORD YESHUA, HE makes us righteous. [1 Corinthians 1. 30]  The ANOINTED ONE completes us, for we are covered over by HIM and called "the very righteousness of GOD in HIM." [2 Corinthians 5. 21]
The colors of this curtain are significant.  First, the curtains themselves are of White Linen.  This tells of MESSIAH'S righteousness.  Blue is typical of Heaven, a serene color closely linked with gold, which represents DIVINITY. [Exodus/Shemot28. 6, 15; 39. 2, 5, 8]  JESUS came from Heaven.  This is the first color, GOD is first.  Scarlet is last; it is the color significant of earth.  "Adam" is literally translated as "red earth." JESUS, the SUN OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, is the "LAST ADAM."  HE not only came from Heaven (blue), but HE came from earth (red).
Purple is the blending in-between color, blending the red and blue harmoniously.   Purple is the royal color and is the emblem of heavenly and earthly glory.  The LORD MESSIAH is as the purple, for HE is the GOD-MAN (blue-red).  HE is the ROYAL ONE(purple), the KING of the Jews (red), and the KING of kings (blue).  The EXALTED ONE said, "…with cherubim of CUNNING WORK shall you make them." Cunning work is a weaving which penetrates both sides.  This represents workmanship of a more skillful and costly kind than needlework.  The SKILLFUL WEAVER is the HOLY SPIRIT.  The glory of GOD is hidden to all who stand outside the LORD JESUS. 
These elaborate curtains were to hide the sacred furniture and services of the sanctuary from those on the outside.  Only those who enter the Tabernacle saw the glory, beauty exhibited by the colors and design of the inner curtains, the beautiful gold-covered boards and furniture, etc.   GOD THE FATHER is only known in MESSIAH YESHUA.   Here on the inside, the skillful weaving is predominate in the PERSON, LIFE and MINISTRY of the LORD JESUS.   The cunning weave of the colors perfectly blended together with the design of the cherubim all tell us of the perfect work of the HOLY SPIRIT.
The "Curious Work" of GOD in this first curtain also speaks of the ministry of the HOLY SPIRIT in the believer. [Ephesians 2.10; 4. 24; Colossians 3. 10]   We are HIS workmanship and are identified with MESSIAH in the cunning work.  By the HOLY SPIRIT, we are born of HIM, caught up in the curtain, inter-twined with CHRIST THE REDEEMER, woven in HIM and partakers of the divine nature!   The Mishkan curtain covered the boards of the building.  The GREAT ENABLER, the HOLY SPIRIT covers, envelopes, submerges the church, and baptizes the believer with HIMSELF.  This is the great desire and promise of the HEAVENLY FATHER.

The cherubim (according to Ezekiel's vision) had four faces. [Ezekiel/Yehezke-El 1. 10; 10. 21]  These Four Creatures are among the highest in the world— The Lion among wild beasts; the Ox among tame cattle, the Eagle among birds; and Man among all creatures; but, GOD is supreme over all.  The OX, LION, MAN and EAGLE tell us of the Four-Fold Ministry of the UNIVERSAL MESSIAH: 
THE OX  (MESSIAH is symbolized as the SERVANT in Mark's Gospel) is the patient, enduring SERVANT of man.  The LORD MESSIAH YESHUA came as a "SERVANT" — HE is the BELOVED SAVIOR/REDEEMER.   YESHUA serves mankind with HISwonderful salvation.  HE came, not to be ministered to, but to minister and give HIS life a ransom for many. [Matthew 20. 28]
THE LION  (The LORD JESUS is shown as the KING in Matthew's Gospel) is the king of beasts.  YESHUA ha'MASHIACH  has power and dominion on the earth.  Our WONDERFUL LORD is called "The LION of the tribe of Judah."  HE has all dominion and did exercise this power while on earth as KING OF THE JEWS.  HE came to destroy the works of Satan. [1 John 3. 8] CHRIST JESUS is the GREAT PHYSICIAN.
THE EAGLE  (John's text shows CHRIST JESUS to be the SON OF THE LIVING GOD) is the king of the birds, soaring high into the heavens and most feared by the snake.  JESUS is the KING of kings.  HE is the MIGHTY BAPTIZER with the HOLY SPIRIT[Matthew 3. 11] causing HIS people to rise on wings into the Heavens with HIM.
THE MAN  (Luke pictures YESHUA, the SON OF MAN) Daniel saw YESHUA coming in the Clouds of Glory calling HIM the"SON OF MAN."  When the LORD JESUS came the first time, HE was rejected of man; but when HE returns, HE will be THEMAN over men, the PRAISEWORTHY RULER over mankind.   All the governments of the world shall be upon HIS shoulder.[Isaiah/Yeshayah 9. 6]   Our SOVEREIGN LORD will reign forever and ever!
According to Jewish teachings:  "The encampment of Israel around the Tabernacle was marked by banners or standards picturing the four-faces of the cherubim. The banner of the first three tribes bore the outline of a Lion, the second picturedMan, the third was an image of an Ox, and the fourth was the emblem of an Eagle — thus representing the same idea as the cherubim in the Holiest, the Veil, and the Tabernacle Coverings."
This PROMISED MESSIAH is the fulfillment of all these emblems and designs. HE is the STANDARD or BANNER heading all HIS redeemed.  JESUS' SOVEREIGN NAME is YEHOWAH-NISSI, "The LORD, my BANNER." [Exodus/Shemot 17. 15]

SYRIA: Christians Forced to Comply or 'Face the Sword'

Christian leaders in the city of Raqqa have reportedly signed an agreement to pay a protection tax and consent to the demands of the militant Muslim group now controlling their city.
The Muslim group, The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), stated that they had met Christian representatives and offered them three choices: convert to Islam, submit to Islam as dhimmis (subjugated, second-class citizens) or "face the sword." The Christian leaders allegedly then signed an agreement committing the Christian community to submission.
The conditions imposed on the believers prohibit repairing any church building, publicly displaying crosses or other symbols of Christianity, and conducting services outside a church building. Even when inside their church buildings, Christians are not allowed to sing or read the Scriptures loud enough for a Muslim standing outside to hear.
Please lift up in prayer the Christians in Raqqa and throughout Syria, asking our Father to strengthen their faith and lovingly protect and watch over them. May He grant them wisdom and discernment, as well as opportunities to effectively proclaim the Gospel. Pray also that many Muslims, including the members of ISIS, will come to know Jesus Christ in a personal way.

NORTH KOREA: 33 SENTENCED TO DEATH


33 SENTENCED TO DEATH

North Korea has ordered the death of as many as 33 people because of their alleged contact with a missionary, South Korea's largest news organisation has reported.
The 33 North Koreans are charged with attempting to overthrow the regime by setting up 500 underground churches. Chosun Ibo, a South Korean newspaper, said they are accused of working with Kim Jung-wook, a South Korean arrested by North Korean authorities in October on suspicion of trying to establish underground churches.
The executions will be carried out in a secret location administered by the State Security Department, Chosun Ilbo reported.
Kim, a Baptist missionary, appeared on North Korean television on 27 February and said he was working at the direction of the South Korean National Intelligence Service, and that his goal was the collapse of the Pyongyang regime. It's unknown whether Kim's TV appearance will earn his release - nor how many of the 33 arrested people are Christian.
BLOODSTAINED BARRACKS

Christians, estimated to number in the tens of thousands, are held in North Korea's prisons and labour camps. Last week, one survivor described to World Watch Monitor the conditions of the camp where she was imprisoned.
"The walls of our barracks were bloodstained, because we killed as many fleas and lice as we could," she said. "We received only a few spoons of rotten corn meal each. The soup we ate was usually just dirty water. If we were thirsty and wanted extra water, we needed to steal it from the nearby stream, which was polluted by the garbage of the guards."
The death rate was so high that bodies stacked up outside the crematorium, she said.
"Sometimes, they rotted for days in sheds before they were disposed or burnt. The ashes whirled over the road we walked every day. Each time my feet crunched, I thought: 'One day the other prisoners will walk over me.' "
If there were other Christians in the camp, they didn't reveal themselves.
"Nobody spoke about their faith in the camp," the woman said. "Besides, I was lucky enough to be sent to a re-education camp, and I was eventually released. Most Christians are put in so-called total-control zones. Political labuor camps. Nobody is ever released from there."

NIGERIA: CHURCHES WILL NOT STAY SILENT DURING VIOLENCE


Nigeria's largest church network is calling on the country's president for more protection from Boko Haram attacks.
"We will not keep silence amidst persecution Christians are facing," Rev. Ayo Oritsejafor, president of the Christian Association of Nigeria, told World Watch Monitor on 7 March.
"The killings in Northern Nigeria are condemnable and act of wickedness to humanity," Oritsejafor said. "It is unfortunate that worshippers are being killed in their homes and places of worship. We are not happy with this trend and will continue to pray to God to bring an end to this excruciating situation we are going through in Northern Nigeria."
Oritsejafor appealed to government and security agencies to be proactive towards protecting lives and properties, and to prosecute the perpetrators.
Across Plateau state, at least 163 people have been killed in attacks by suspected Fulanis since the beginning of the year. Each wave of violence brings renewed criticism, from the Christian Association of Nigeria and other quarters, that Nigerian security forces are not doing enough to stop the killings.
On 9 March, President Goodluck Jonathan called for more prayer to defeat the insurgency.

RECENT PRISONER UPDATE
IRAN: Imprisoned Believers Need Continued Prayer

Behnam Irani, an imprisoned pastor who has suffered complications as a result of stomach ulcers and intestinal problems, underwent surgery on February 22nd at Shahid Madani Hospital in Karaj. According to our sources, the surgery was successful and the pastor is doing well. (For more information on Behnam, visit our website at www.persecution.net/ir-2013-10-17.htm.)
On March 2nd, a Christian man by the name of Sevada Aghasar, who spent over six months behind bars, was released from Evin Prison. Sevada was arrested in August of 2013. Although he wasn't officially charged, evidence suggests that his arrest was related to his online contact with a number of Farsi-speaking Christians. Also released was Masoud Mirzaei, a Christian convert who had been arrested at the same time.
Finally, an American pastor, Saeed Abedini, was recently transferred from a prison in Tehran to one in Karaj. Most of the prisoners at the Karaj jail are reportedly incarcerated for murder or other serious criminal offences. Pastor Saeed, who is in poor health, is presently serving an eight-year term for his ministry work in Iran among the underground house church movement. With thanksgiving to God, let us praise Him for providing a way for Pastor Behnam to undergo much-needed surgery. As this pastor now recovers, pray that his health will continue to improve. Pray, too, that his release will soon follow. Similarly, let us thank God for the release of Sevada and Masoud. May they go forward from here with an even greater resolve to share the "Good News" of Jesus. Also remember Pastor Saeed in your prayers...that the Lord will hide and shield him in the shadow of His wings (Psalm 17:8).

"A Call To Arms"

"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour." 1 Peter 5:8

I woke up during the middle of the night and before I went back to sleep, just out of nowhere I heard very clearly in my spirit four words- "a call to arms". I didn't even know what it meant so I had to look it up. The dictionary defines the phrase as: a command to report for active military duty.

In doing a little further study, I looked up some of the other words that were related to the phrase. Among them were such words as: enlist (sign up for responsibility); mobilize (ready for action); rally (reorganize, unite); recruit (gather resources); engage (involve, commit).

The phrase "a call to arms" that I heard was not a physical call to a natural army, but a spiritual one. When we came to Christ and became saved/believers, we enlisted in the Army of the Lord. "Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ." (2 Timothy 2:3) We enlisted, it was a free choice that we made. And in doing so, we signed up for responsibility in the Kingdom of God, not just for fire-insurance from hell, or to receive blessings.

Whether we realize it or not, we are in a spiritual warfare; there is a battle going on."Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." (Ephesians 6:11,12)

The Bible says that the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. (Matthew 11:12) "A call to arms", is the Lord's trumpet sounding to awaken and rally His troops to engage in battle. It is time we recognize that we are in a war (a spiritual one) and that we have a very real enemy (the devil) who has an intense hatred for God, and us because we love and serve Him, and is out to steal, kill and destroy us. (John 10:10)

The Lord is calling us off of our soft couches, to lay down our bless me mentality, to stop worshipping the gods of entertainment, quit compromising, stop being lazy, remove our lack of concern, our disobedience, self-centered, half-hearted Sunday kind of Christianity, undisciplined and uncrucified lives.

He is calling us to self-denial, zeal for His kingdom, to endure hardship as a soldier, to take us our cross and follow Him, to surrender our wills to His will, to love Him with all our hearts, souls, strength and minds, and to love not our lives unto death.

He is calling us to mobilize- get ready for action (we can't as long as we are lazy in our Christian disciplines).
He is calling us to rally- reorganize, unite (we can't if we don't love one another, live with prejudice, or have ought in our hearts).
He is calling us to recruit- gather resources (pick up our spiritual weapons, clean then up, give the gospel to the lost, make disciples- others joining the army of God is the best resource).
He is calling us to engage-- involve, commit (we can't if we are lazy and won't surrender ourselves to the Lord whole-heartedly).

Will you hear His call this morning? Will you engage in this spiritual war? You can't sit by and think you will avoid it-- you are already in it and just don't realize it.

Have a great day. The Lord is calling His church to arms-- to get to "active" duty, and stop being "inactive".

Paul was not merely satisfied to know Christ, as the property of someone else; he wanted Christ as his own! He was not only willing to receive Christ as a free gift — but he would win Christ as a prize!

Was Christ to be run for — then he would run.
Was Christ to be wrestled for — then he would wrestle.
Were there any means by which Christ could be obtained, however painful, however costly, however difficult — then Paul would use them!

Did he believe? It was that he might win Christ.
Did he pray? It was that he might win Christ.
Did he preach? It was that he might win Christ.
Did he crucify the old man, mortify the flesh, beat his body and make it his slave? It was that he might win Christ.
Did he suffer the loss of all things, and count them but dung and dross? It was that he might win Christ.
Did he subject himself to stripes, imprisonment, hunger, cold, nakedness, and a martyr's death? It was that he might win Christ.

To possess Christ was his one object, his ruling desire!

Reader, is it your main object and desire?

Are you prepared to part with all to win Christ?

Would you take Christ — in exchange for ease, reputation, wealth, labors, sufferings, yes, even death itself? Paul was; and if you are not, his estimates of Christ and yours cannot be the same.

My soul, I charge you — let this be your object, let this be your aim, always and everywhere: to "win Christ!"

LIBYA: Egyptian Christians Targeted in Execution-Style Murders

Seven Egyptian Christians were brutally murdered on February 24th on a beach near the Libyan city of Benghazi. The victims -- who ranged in age from 17 to 25, and worked in the area -- were apprehended by a group of armed men who searched their apartment building door-to-door for Christians. Although several other believers managed to escape the assailants, the seven young men were forced to the beach where they were shot in the head execution-style.
According to reports, a militia group has offered rewards to Benghazi residents who are willing to help them round up other Christians. The killings have sparked great fear among expatriate believers working in the area, and many are now seeking a safe way to leave the country.
Pray that the families of the murdered young men will know the peace, presence and comfort of our Saviour, Jesus. PAKISTAN: Brother of Murdered Christian MP Facing Death Threats

Almost three years have passed since the murder of Shahbaz Bhatti, a Pakistani MP who lobbied against the country's controversial blasphemy laws. Now, his elder brother's life is under threat.
Paul Bhatti recently received a letter from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, warning him that he would suffer the same fate as his brother if he did not stop pursuing justice. Other lawyers and eyewitnesses involved in Shahbaz's case have also received death threats. Paul Bhatti was living in Italy when his brother was murdered on March 2nd, 2011, but soon returned to his home country to take over the chairmanship of the All-Pakistan Minorities' Alliance, which his brother founded. He says his desire is to speak on behalf of the country's marginalized and oppressed, and to fight for improved education and opportunities for the poor and those facing discrimination. In Pakistan, this often means Christians, who comprise around two-and-a-half percent of the population. "In this situation of instability in Pakistan the minorities suffer more, especially the Christian minority, which belongs to the poorest sector of Pakistan," Paul explains.
During this time of uncertainty, ask the Lord to protect and preserve Paul, his family members, and all those who support him in his work to raise a voice for minorities in Pakistan. Also pray that God's reassuring presence will be evident to the lawyers and eyewitnesses who are facing threats, reminding them to seek Him for their daily strength. Ask that wisdom, direction and favour be granted to the leaders and authorities involved in this case. Pray, too, that the perpetrators of Shahbaz's murder will be brought to justice and, through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, they will come to accept Jesus Christ as their Saviour.

LAOS: Despite Opposition, Believers Standing Firm

In the midst of opposition from family members and authorities, believers throughout Laos are remaining resolute in their faith.
Three Christians from a remote Hmong village were arrested in October of 2013 and taken to the district governor, who told them to recant their faith in Jesus Christ. But the believers refused to comply, telling the governor that they would not leave their faith because their lives have been changed by God. After their arrest, a VOM contact explained that Christians are, by law, allowed to practise their faith. Another contact was then sent to discuss the matter with the district governor, and the three Christians were released without further problems.
Qhua Xiong, a 20-year-old new believer, faced immediate persecution from his relatives when they learned of his conversion. The young Hmong man had dedicated his life to Christ while attending a Christmas service in Hua Sell in December of 2013. Upon returning to his home village, he was beaten by family members and tied up for a day and a half. They later forced him to leave the village.
In another remote village, Pastor "Tai Loc" and other Christians of his community have refused to renounce their faith despite pressure from local authorities. After learning their village had been awarded the "best role model village" in their district, the officials became concerned that they might be disqualified because Christians lived there. Pastor Loc explained to them that the Christians in the village are role models because of their hard work and example to others. When the pastor refused to renounce his faith, the opposing officials tried to persuade him to sign papers indicating that he would stop evangelizing in the village. Seeing that the Christians remained steadfast in their beliefs, the authorities eventually stopped pressuring them.
As the believers of this nation face opposition from family members and authorities alike, pray that they will cling to their faith in God and place their trust in Him who promises to uphold them (Psalm 63:8). Pray that those facing rejection from their families will experience true and lasting relationships with their spiritual brothers and sisters. May the Lord also work mightily in the lives of the leaders and authorities who are opposing the Christian faith, that they would see the error of their ways and come to believe in the saving message of Christ who was crucified on behalf of their sins as well.

IRAQ: Christians Facing 'More than Desperate' Crisis

Canon Andrew White, known as the "Vicar of Baghdad," has requested urgent prayer for the church in Iraq during this time of intense violence in the country. With frequent bombings and shootings in cities such as Baghdad and Mosul, monthly death tolls have soared recently. January's toll of more than 1,000 killed was the highest in almost six years.
Canon Andrew, a partner of The Voice of the Martyrs, recently shared that some of the young people at the church he leads have been among those tragically killed. His Christian friends are leaving and begging him to leave too.
"Hundreds of our people have left the church because they have left the country," he explains. "The hundreds left are those who cannot afford to leave, so the poverty and needs seem greater than ever. I honestly cannot tell you how terrible things are. We are in more than a desperate crisis. We need your prayers."
Yet Canon Andrew remains resolute. "I will not leave my people here, however bad it is," he says. "I am not leaving, and neither is God."
Trusting that God is indeed present and at work in Iraq, let us bring this country to Him in prayer. Pray that He will use Canon Andrew and other leaders like him to faithfully shepherd the dwindling Christian population. Through their example, may believers be encouraged to remain steadfast in their faith, despite the instability and the constant risks. May the church there be a vessel of God's peace, extending love to all their neighbours. Pray, too, for an end to the fighting and bloodshed in Iraq which have been mainly caused by tensions between Sunni militants and the Shia-dominated government.

KENYA: Pastor Murdered While Guarding Church

Assistant Pastor Lawrence Kazungu Kadenge was murdered in the early morning hours of February 2nd while guarding the Glory of God Ministries Church in Mombasa. Although police are still investigating the murder, it is believed that radical Muslims may have killed the 59-year-old pastor for alerting police about security threats and for preaching the Gospel near a mosque. Pastor Lawrence leaves behind his wife, Lydia, and their 13 children.
"It is very hard for me because we worked very closely together," said the church's senior pastor. "His family has been hit very hard. All of us, the family and congregants, need prayer as we grieve his loss. We need God's comfort. Please pray for us."
Several days before Pastor Lawrence's murder, a controversial mosque in Mombasa was raided by police on the suspicion that the mosque was being used to recruit Muslim youth to engage in terrorist acts against Kenyan civilians. Police arrested 125 young people during the raid. One person was killed, and two police officers were seriously injured.
Pastor Lawrence's death has increased fears among other pastors in the area. Several other church leaders have been murdered, and radical Muslims, who are attempting to create an independent state along the coastal area, have attacked churches.
As Lydia and her children, along with members of their Christian community, mourn the loss of Pastor Lawrence, pray that through Christ they will be able to share abundantly in His comfort (2 Corinthians 1:5). Pray for guidance and strength for the church's senior pastor, as well as the leaders of other area churches. May God grant them boldness to be 'salt' and 'light' to others of their community, especially to those who oppose them. Finally, intercede on behalf of the mosque leaders and the Muslim youths, asking God to open their hearts to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

KAZAKHSTAN: Pastor Receives Suspended Prison Term

On February 17th, a retired pastor accused of harming the health of a church member was handed a four-year suspended prison sentence. Bakhytzhan Kashkumbayev was also ordered to pay his alleged victim "moral damages" of two million tenge (approximately $12,000 CAD).
The case against Pastor Bakhytzhan dragged on for months after his arrest in May of 2013, when he was charged with the psychological manipulation of Lyazzat Almenova, 34, through the use of a "red-coloured hallucinogenic drink." In reality, the drink was a harmless, non-alcoholic beverage used as part of the church's Holy Communion to represent red wine. Although she insists her pastor is "totally innocent," Pastor Bakhytzhan was arrested after Lyazzat's mother claimed that her daughter's mental health had been damaged due to attending the church. "In my experience as a lawyer, this is one of the strangest cases I have seen in terms of legality," said the pastor's lawyer after the verdict was handed down. "It was not just strange but, from the standpoint of the law, all types of violations occurred when the case was opened, when it was being investigated, and during the trial." Pastor Bakhytzhan will reportedly appeal the verdict.
As Pastor Bakhytzhan and his lawyers work towards appealing this latest verdict, pray that God will grant them wisdom and endurance. May the charges against him soon be dropped! Ask God to strengthen this pastor's faith, encouraging him to stand strong as he weathers this storm. Pray, too, for Lyazzat and her family. May her understanding and acceptance of the Gospel increase each day, and may her family members come to a saving faith in our Saviour. Finally, bring the country of Kazakhstan to God in prayer, asking that He will enable His church to grow in faithfulness and in number.

NIGERIA: Over 100 Fatalities in Weekend Killing Spree

In the dark of the night on February 15th, Boko Haram militants chanting "Allahu Akbar" ("God is great") attacked the predominantly Christian village of Izghe in the Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State. After ordering the villagers to gather together, the assailants then opened fire, chasing down anyone who attempted to escape. At least 100 were murdered. The gunmen, who were wearing military fatigues, also set fire to houses, looted food supplies and stole several vehicles.
Boko Haram launched similar attacks on other villages in both Borno and Adamawa State the same day. The militant group, which has ties with al-Qaeda, seeks to impose Sharia, or Islamic law, throughout the country. Last year, hundreds of Christians were brutally murdered by the group.
After yet another massive attack on our victimized Christian family in Nigeria, let us turn to Scripture, joining the plea of the psalmist David in Psalm 13 while praying on their behalf: "How long, Lord? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me? Look on me and answer, Lord my God. Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death, and my enemy will say, 'I have overcome him,' and my foes will rejoice when I fall. But I trust in Your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in Your salvation. I will sing the Lord's praise, for He has been good to me."

CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC: Peace Needed Amid Rampant Devastation

On January 28th, a pastor and his son were shot and killed within their church compound in the capital city of Bangui by members of a rebel group. The rebels, former members of the disbanded "Seleka" group, shouted "Allahu Akbar" before shooting Rev. Pierre-Severin Kongbo, 52, and his eldest son, Dieubeni. Two weeks before the men were killed, the rebels had come to their home, asking for the pastor. His wife informed them that he was not at home and then gave in to the rebels' demand for all the money in the house. Rev. Pierre-Severin is survived by his wife and their five other children.
This father and son are among the latest casualties in a country that has been beset by violence since December of 2012. The devastation began when a coalition of rebel groups, led by Michel Djotodia under the Seleka banner, moved through the country to eventually drive out the president in March of 2013. Djotodia took control of a transitional government, but resigned from his post last month. The National Assembly then elected Catherine Samba-Panza as president.
Since Djotodia's resignation and exile to Benin, hundreds of ex-Seleka members, many of whom are Muslim, have left the capital, leaving desolation in their wake. "People are fleeing," announced a source. "It appears that the Seleka, on their way back to Chad, are burning villages as they go. They have stolen vehicles belonging to local priests."
As the Seleka rebels retreat, local Muslims who are perceived to be accomplices of the group have faced attacks by Anti-Balaka ("Anti-Machete"), self-defense militias that are often comprised of Christians. However, while the Seleka have been largely termed a Muslim group, and the Anti-Balaka considered to be Christian, church leaders in the country have clarified that not all Anti-Balaka are Christians, and not all Christians are Anti-Balaka. The same principle applies to ex-Seleka members and Muslims. In all, over one million citizens have been displaced, and nearly two million require urgent humanitarian assistance.
As the family of these Christian men mourn their loss, pray that God will surround them with His peace and comfort. Ask Him to also meet their every material need at this time. Similarly, bring to the Lord the millions of people in this nation who are displaced or lacking basic essentials. May the 'Prince of Peace' reign in this country and in the hearts of all its citizens. In particular, pray that the church will be a beacon of hope and love to all, even to their persecutors. May Christians not resort to violence or seek revenge, but may the atrocities they have endured purify and refine their faith in our Living God. Let us also pray for wisdom for the country's new president and its other leaders and authorities. Also remember those who have perpetrated horrific crimes. May they repent, realizing that Christ's blood covers even the most grievous of sins.

MOROCCO: Evangelism Charges Dropped Against Convert

The charges against Mohamed El Baladi, a convert to Christianity who was arrested for "shaking the faith of a Muslim," were recently overturned. While the judge ruled that Mohamed had engaged in general conversation about his faith, there was no evidence that he had coerced or offered financial incentives to others for converting.
Mohamed, who is in his early 30s, had been initially sentenced to two-and-a-half years' imprisonment after his house was raided in August of 2013. (For more information on his arrest, please visit www.persecution.net/ma-2013-10-03.htm.) According to sources, police apprehended Mohamed after he met for a second time with two teenagers who were hired by his uncle to feign interest in Christianity.
Praise God that Mohamed's charges have been dropped! As this released prisoner moves forward, pray that the Lord will guide and direct his every step. Intercede on behalf of Mohamed's uncle and other family members who clearly oppose the Christian faith. May they one day join this young man in worshipping Jesus, the only way to the Father. Also bring other Moroccan believers before our God in prayer, beseeching Him to grant them boldness to share their faith, despite the risk of offending others or facing charges themselves.

Humility may be defined as consisting in:
1. a profound self-abasement before God, arising from a deep sense of our sinfulness;
2. and in a low estimation of ourselves, as we stand related to our fellow creatures, whatever is the extent of our attainments, or the importance of the station we occupy.

Upon this subject, too much stress cannot be laid — for without humility, true religion cannot possibly exist. A proud Christian is a contradiction in terms. We might as well speak of a wise fool, of a wicked saint, of a sober drunkard, or of a chaste harlot — as of a proud Christian! We may as soon expect delicate flowers to flourish in the frozen and barren regions of Siberia — as that true piety should grow in the heart that is proud and haughty. A vine might as well thrive when a worm is gnawing at its root — as that the soul should prosper and be in health, when its arrogance and pride are not subdued. 

One of the Fathers of the Church, when asked which was the first principle in religion, replied, Humility. When asked which was the second, he said,Humility. And when asked which was the third, he again answered, Humility. So important was this grace in his estimation, that he regarded it as the beginning, the middle, and the end of true godliness. And we may truly say that where humility is absent, everything else in religion, is in vain. COLOMBIA: Murdered Father and Son Together in Eternity

On January 10th, "Manuel," 35, and his 11-year-old son, "Daniel," were brutally tortured and murdered by members of the FARC guerrilla group in the village of Guacamayas (Guaviare). In this region of Colombia, Christians face strong persecution from the guerrilla groups who threaten, pressure and forbid them from preaching the Gospel in rural areas. Manuel, a recent convert to Christianity, leaves behind his pregnant wife and their three daughters, who range in age from three to 17. The family has since been moved to another city.
The pastor who leads the church that Manuel and his family attended received a letter recently from the FARC, stating, "You must leave the region or you'll die." Included in the letter was a picture of a coffin.
Approaching the Lord's throne of grace with confidence, let us come alongside this mourning widow and her daughters in prayer, asking Him to grant them mercy and grace in their time of need (Hebrews 4:16). Pray that they will be safe in their new location, and supported and loved by fellow Christians there. May the threatened pastor entrust his very life to Jesus and seek Godly wisdom as he continues to lead his congregation during these troubled times. Also intercede on behalf of the FARC guerrillas who perpetrated this horrible crime...that they, like Manuel, will come to faith in our Risen Lord.

MALAYSIA: Perpetrators Stir Strife Between Religious Groups

A church in Penang was attacked on January 26th when two men on a motorcycle threw Molotov cocktails at the building. Thankfully, the building sustained minimal damage as only one of the explosives detonated.
The attack came less than 24 hours after five separate churches discovered banners hung on their property with the phrase, "Allah is great, Jesus is the son of Allah" -- a slogan that is extremely offensive to Muslims who do not want non-Muslims using the word "Allah." The banners appear to have been put up by a group wishing to stir up trouble between Christians and Muslims. Each of the churches has filed a report with police about the acts of vandalism.
In October of 2013, the use of the word "Allah" was banned for non-Muslims in the country, sparking heated debates over the legal right of Christians (and others) to use the Arabic term for God in the Bible, other printed materials and worship services. On January 2nd, over 20 officers raided the Bible Society of Malaysia in Selangor State. Four of the officers were from the Islamic Religious Department, the highest Islamic authority in Malaysia. Despite the lack of search warrants, more than 330 copies of the Bible in the Malay and Iban languages were confiscated.
Give thanks to the Lord for protecting the church in Penang from significant harm. Pray that the truth regarding the banners hung on the other church properties will soon be made known. May Christians do all they can to live at peace with their Muslim neighbours, demonstrating Christ's love in all they do (Romans 12:17-18). During this time of unrest in Malaysia, please also bring the country's church leaders before our God in prayer, asking Him to grant them a generous measure of wisdom (James 1:5).

CHINA: Crackdown Preceded Chinese New Year Celebrations

Before the commencement of the nation's Chinese New Year celebrations, which began on January 31st, Christians were targeted several times in what is believed to be a crackdown on church activity.
In Beijing, members of a church group were arrested on January 24th when they tried to visit Zhang Wenhe, a fellow member. The 19 Christians had initially gone to Zhang's home for a Bible study, only to discover that he was being held under house arrest at another location. Upon learning of Zhang’s new location, and the fact that he was experiencing serious health concerns due to a heart problem, the believers tried to deliver food and medicine to him. Authorities then detained 15 of the believers, including Zhang, a 14-year-old male and another believer with heart trouble.
Meanwhile, churches in central Henan province and southern Guangdong province have also reported intense persecution. In Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong, police have disrupted the gatherings of a house church twice a week since the start of January. In Neihuang County, Henan, many Christians are fearful to attend their church meetings because of the opposition they have endured from several local government departments.
As our brothers and sisters in China endure this latest crackdown, pray that they will keep their eyes on Jesus, persevere in their faith, and not grow weary or lose heart (Hebrews 10:32-39; Hebrews 12:1-3). Pray that the detained Christians will be released very soon, and that their faith will only be strengthened by this trial. Also bring China's authorities to our Lord in prayer, asking that their eyes may be opened to the truth of the Gospel.

"His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies." Psalm 112:8


How do we live a life at rest and peace inwardly? How do we resist caving into fear when it comes? The answer is in having an established heart. What is an established heart? It is one that is unmovable and firm. It is firm in its conviction. It is firm in its belief. It is firm in its confidence. When something is "firm", it is unmovable, unshakeable, un wavering- it is solid. So how do we get an established heart?


"Praise ye the Lord. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly in his commandments." (verse 1) This established heart is the characteristic of a person who fears the Lord and delights in His commandments. It is not something he obtains on his own- through his education, through a strong resolve, through seer determination. No matter how determined you are, no matter how resolved you are, when fearful situations arise your own human strength will fail. It is not strong enough to withstand it on its own. But when we fear the Lord and are established in Him, His strength is made perfect in our weakness. When we fear the Lord, His peace that passes understanding is imparted to us. When we fear the Lord let the enemy come, but we are not afraid because our confidence is in the Lord that He is with us fighting the battle on our behalf.


This established confidence of heart only comes to those who fear the Lord. Those that fear Him are those that have surrendered their lives to Him. They are the ones who follow and serve Him. They are the ones who love Him with all their heart, soul, strength and mind. They are those who don't just profess to know Him but truly know Him.


This established heart stays established through God's word (that delighteth greatly in his commandments). When our delight is in the commandments- God's word- and we read it, hide it in our hearts and meditate upon it, we are strengthen in our faith. Our faith becomes unwavering because it is rooted and grounded in God's word and promises which cannot fail. His word gives us a firm foundation upon which we build not only our hope but our lives. His word is like a solid rock- a firm foundation. When we are built upon it, we don't have to fear because our lives will stand firm. "And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock." (Matthew 7:25)


The Lord is our Rock and His word is our Rock. When our lives are built upon Him, our hearts are established. When they are established, we don't have to fear when the rain comes, when the floods come, when the winds blow, when the enemy rises, when the fire threatens, when the lions roar, or when evil approaches.


Have a great day. When we fear God and love His word, our hearts will be firm in faith and we don't have to fear whatever comes our way,

SYRIA: Mother and Daughter Persecuted for Christian Faith

A Syrian mother and her daughter are under fire for their new Christian faith. Three years ago, "Karima" learned about the love of Jesus and became a devoted follower. As the married mother of three, she hoped her husband "Ismaeil," a Muslim, might also believe. Instead, he became even more devoted to his Muslim faith and trained as an imam (an Islamic spiritual leader).
Ismaeil forbade Karima and their daughter, who had also converted to Christianity, from reading the Bible or sharing their faith with others. About two months ago, he also began beating Karima. Fortunately, recent health challenges have prevented him from abusing her further.
Elsewhere in the country, other Christians are facing opposition from Islamic radical groups. Much of the north, for example, has come under the control of militant groups attempting to impose a strict Islamic ideology on the area.
Pray that God will shield and protect Karima and her daughter, surrounding them with His favour (Psalm 5:12). Also lift up her son who has recently started attending church. May his faith grow and be deeply rooted. Pray that Ismaeil will repent of his abuse toward his wife and recognize his need for a Saviour, joining his family in worshipping the one true God. Please also intercede on behalf of all believers throughout Syria, that they will continue to follow Jesus at any cost.

CHINA: Pastor Charged with 'Fraud' and 'Disrupting Public Order'

Zhang Shaojie, 49, a pastor detained in November of 2013 along with over 20 other Christians, has been charged with committing fraud and gathering a mob to disrupt public order. His criminal hearing has been scheduled for February 12th.
Pastor Zhang and his state-approved church began facing opposition from authorities after the county government reneged on an agreement to allocate a piece of land for the church to construct a new building. The incarceration of the believers came as a surprise to many observers, as the communist government typically targets unregistered congregations. Thankfully, by mid-January, several of the imprisoned Christians had been freed. On January 24th, three additional believers -- Ms. Zhao Xiping, Ms. Yang Miling and Ms.Sheyin Duanmu -- were also released. The conditions of their release were not yet known at last report.
Thank the Lord for the release of these dear sisters in Christ! Ask God to be near Pastor Zhang and his legal counsel as they prepare for his criminal hearing. May the legal authorities act justly, recognizing Pastor Zhang's innocence and releasing him to his family. Pray that the other believers who remain imprisoned will also soon be freed. Bring the country of China to God in prayer, asking Him to powerfully use His church to bring glory to His name.

KAZAKHSTAN: Criminal Trial Begins for Retired Pastor

Eight months after his arrest, retired pastor Bakhytzhan Kashkumbayev arrived in court on January 22nd for the first hearing in his criminal trial. He faces charges of harming health, inciting hatred, propagating extremism and leading an organization that harms others. The charges carry a maximum penalty of about six to ten years' imprisonment each. He denies all wrongdoing. (For more details on his arrest, go towww.persecution.net/kz-2013-10-17.htm.)
The 67-year-old pastor has gone deaf in one ear and has suffered heart problems during the long months he has spent in prison and a psychiatric hospital. His trial will resume after January 31st.
Elsewhere in the country, two Christians were imprisoned for 48 hours, beginning on January 9th, for refusing to pay fines that were given as punishment for exercising their freedom of religion "without state permission." Numerous fines continue to be levied for this "offence."
Pray the Lord's favour will be upon Pastor Bakhytzhan and his legal team, and that the truth of his case will be brought to light. May he soon be acquitted of all charges and released. Pray, too, that God will completely heal and restore him. As others face fines or even imprisonment for exercising their religious freedom, ask God to use them and their suffering to strengthen fellow believers and encourage the growth of His church in Kazakhstan.

SUDAN & SOUTH SUDAN: Helping Christians in the Midst of Violence

In the midst of ethnic and political tensions, our Christian family in Sudan and South Sudan is facing great risk and opposition. This area of the world is also coping with such issues as ongoing internal conflict, poverty, hunger and natural disasters.
Since South Sudan's secession from Sudan in 2011, believers in both countries have faced increased harassment, arrests and persecution. No longer considered "citizens" of Sudan, many South Sudanese are still stranded in the north due to job loss, poverty, transportation limitations and conflict in South Sudan. Some officials have reportedly threatened to kill South Sudanese Christians who do not leave or those not willing to co-operate in the effort to locate other believers.
In Sudan, followers of Christ are under pressure from a regime that wants to extend a strict form of Sharia or Islamic law. Property has also been seized from churches on the pretext that it belongs to South Sudanese who are no longer citizens of the country, while other churches have been bulldozed. Many Sudanese have been displaced, and now live as refugees with inadequate access to food, water and shelter.
With your support, VOMC strives to address the spiritual and practical needs of our persecuted family. We have provided Bibles to our ministering partners in Sudan for distribution among believers and those seeking to know Christ, as well as medicines and other medical supplies to those in need. Additionally, a motorcycle was just recently purchased for our partners working among the South Sudanese.
Trusting that God is working for the good of His children in Sudan and South Sudan, let us rejoice over the many ways in which He is using the church to spread His light amid violence and uncertainty. Pray that the church in South Sudan will be able to take a lead in shaping their country, the world's youngest nation. Ask that the Lord will make a way for those Christians in Sudan who are still trying to get to South Sudan, granting peace along the border between these two countries. In addition to raising up VOMC ministry partners who are willing to work diligently in this area of the world, may God provide for their every need and sustain them as they follow Him at great risk. Please remember to continue interceding for the suffering members of the church...that they will stand strong, serving as powerful examples of God's grace and forgiveness.

INDIA: Christians Targeted in Violent Attacks

Militant Hindus attacked believers in several incidents during recent weeks. On Christmas Day, approximately 20 assailants raided the home where a group of Christians had gathered for prayer, grabbing Bibles and ripping them apart while shouting and cursing at the group for "destroying the Hindu culture." The Hindus also called local police, accusing the believers of "forced conversions to Christianity." Police arrested Pastor Arjun, 24, and five other Christians, seizing 20 Bibles from the home as evidence. The six Christians were released on bail the following day but still face prosecution.
In Andhra Pradesh, a pastor was left in critical condition after he and his wife were attacked on December 30th by a group of radicals wielding swords, knives and sticks. Pastor Namha Mosses, his wife Suvartha, and their seven-year-old daughter were asleep in their home when they heard a knock on the door at 1 a.m. When Pastor Namha answered the door, he was repeatedly stabbed in the stomach and back, causing damage to his liver, kidneys and other internal organs. When Suvartha rushed to help her husband, the assailants turned on her, injuring her head and hands. Neighbours called an ambulance for the wounded couple, who were immediately taken to a nearby hospital. Because Pastor Namha's injuries were more severe, he was transferred to a hospital in Hyderabad. The pastoring couple had been warned to stop their Christian activities, but they continued to minister through prayer and the services of their church which includes 100 members and six house churches in the area.
Also in Andhra Pradesh, another church leader who had been stabbed succumbed to his injuries and died on January 13th. Brother Sanjeev was attacked several days prior to his death after the assailants came to his home which was located on his church's premises. Although the pastor was rushed to a local hospital, and later transferred to a larger medical facility, he died while undergoing treatment. Brother Sanjeev's wife was also attacked and suffered serious wounds to her arm. The pastor leaves behind his grieving wife and three children. At last report, three members of a militant Hindu group had been arrested for the murder.
Bring the country of India before the Lord in prayer, asking Him to use His church in a powerful way to shed the light of the Good News to the many lost souls in need of rescue from the realm of darkness. Ask Him to be especially near the six accused Christians who are facing prosecution. May their charges be dropped and their witness for Christ go unhindered so they can continue serving Him despite the risks. Pray for healing for Pastor Namha and Suvartha, and encouragement for their church during this difficult time. Finally, please remember to uphold Brother Sanjeev's grieving family. While he is now able to behold our Risen Saviour face-to-face, his family, friends and congregation are understandably mourning his loss. May they experience the Lord's reassuring comfort and the ability to extend mercy and forgiveness to the attackers through His grace.

IRAN: Remembering Those in Bonds

Davoud Alijani, an Iranian believer imprisoned along with four other Christians in December of 2011, was released on January 13th after spending more than 250 days in jail. Davoud had been charged with converting from Islam to Christianity. (For more information about his arrest, please visitwww.persecution.net/ir-2013-12-19.htm.)
Pastor Farhad Sabokrouh and Naser Zamen-Dezfuli, who were imprisoned along with Davoud, were earlier released from custody in December 2013. At last report, the fourth Christian, Pastor Farhad's wife Shahnaz Jayzan, remained imprisoned. However, unconfirmed reports indicate that she will be released in the next several days.
Meanwhile, January 16th marked the third anniversary of the trial of Behnam Irani, 43, a house church leader imprisoned for "offences against national security." Contacts report that Pastor Behnam is being held in appalling conditions at Ghezal Hesar prison and that he is seriously ill. His medical conditions, for which he has received inadequate treatment, include a bleeding ulcer and a herniated disc. He has also been beaten and tortured by prison officials. In a letter Behnam wrote in prison, he shared: "In jail I have attained new experiences about love. Here, I live with cellmates of whom it is hard to see anything positive in their lives and personalities. They don't think about anything but negative values, abhorrent acts, learning new experiences in crimes and nasty literature. I look at them and whisper to myself, 'Do they really deserve prayers and intercessions?' Immediately, I remember that Jesus Christ was sacrificed for their sins too. 'He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world’ (1 John 2:2)."
While imprisoned, Pastor Behnam's family is facing scrutiny by authorities. On December 15th, 2013, security forces raided the home of his wife Kristina, as well as the homes of three other Christians. Authorities confiscated Bibles and other Christian materials, as well as Kristina's laptop.
Thank the Lord for answered prayer in the release of Davoud, Farhad and Naser. May Shahnaz's release soon follow! Ask the Lord to help them recover from the emotional and physical ordeals they have suffered. May God comfort them through the outpouring of love they receive from fellow Christians, as well as through the promises of His Holy Word (Psalm 119:49-56). Let us also bring the officials and authorities involved with Behnam's case to the Lord, asking Him to work mightily in their hearts so they may extend His justice and compassion.

Wounding Jesus!

"I was wounded in the house of My friends!" Zechariah 13:6

Whoever loved like Jesus--and whoever was wounded like Him? Literally in the days of His flesh--and figuratively or spiritually since He has gone to glory. Hence the language of the prophet is most appropriate to Him, whether originally intended for Him or not. 

THE PARTIES COMPLAINED OF. "My friends." All who call themselves Christians, and profess to be the friends of Jesus. 

THE PARTY COMPLAINING. This is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, the only party who never ought to have reason to complain, and who never would complain without a reason. Yet no one has such cause--for hourly He is wounded in the house of His friends. 

Yet, He is the personification of love. Love in all its fullness, tenderness, and glory, dwells in Him. He is emphatically love, and He never had one feeling in His heart towards His friends, nor dropped one word from His lips to us, nor did anything in His dealings with us--but what flowed from love. Love . . .
  reigns in His heart, 
  looks through His eyes, 
  speaks with His tongue, 
  and works with His hands. 

Let us listen to HIS COMPLAINT. "I was wounded in the house of my friends!" Precious Lord Jesus--is it true that You are wounded still? Can it be that Your people, Your professed friends, wound you? Alas! it is too true. 

WHO wounds Him? Every inconsistent believer. O Christian, will you, can you, wound that Savior, on whom alone your dependence is placed, for . . .
  help in life, 
  hope in death, and
  glory beyond the grave! Yet . . . 
by the irregularity of your walk, 
by your lukewarmness, 
by your half-heartedness,
by your mixing up with the world, and 
by your lack of thoroughness in His cause
--you wound Him! 

WHAT wounds Him? Our pride, selfishness and worldliness. 
We think so much of ourselves--and so little of Him. 
We pay so much attention to ourselves--and so little to Him. 
We give so much of our time, our talents, our energies to the world--and so little to Him. 

How could we insult Him more, than by preferring ourselves, our ease, our pleasure, our wealth, our reputation to Him; except it is by preferring the world, which is His enemy, to Him?

O beloved, how deeply have our pride of heart, and worldliness of spirit, wounded Jesus!

Oh! if there were no Christ Jesus, there could be no "supply." Howling in hell would our miserable souls be, unless there were a Mediator at the right hand of the Father; a blessed Jesus, full of love, pity, and power, co-equal and co-eternal in his divine nature with the Father and the Holy Spirit, and yet the God-Man, in whom "it has pleased the Father that all fullness should dwell."
If there were not such a blessed Mediator at the right hand of God, not one drop of spiritual comfort, not one particle of hope, not one grace or fruit of the Spirit to distinguish us from the damned in hell, would ever be our lot or portion. Oh! we should never forget the channel through which these mercies come; we should never, for one moment, think that they could come through any other Person or in any other way, than through God's only begotten Son, now in our nature, at his right hand, as our Advocate, Mediator, and Intercessor with the Father.
And this supply is "according to the riches of his glory;" which is, I believe, a Hebrew idiom, signifying his glorious riches--riches so great, so unlimited, so unfathomable, raising up the soul to such a height of glory, that they may well be called "glorious." And these "in Christ Jesus;" stored up in him, locked up in him, and supplied freely out of him, just according to the needs and exercises of God's people.

SRI LANKA: Christians Targeted in Several Attacks

Our Christian brothers and sisters in Sri Lanka were targeted in several attacks in recent weeks. Around the midnight hour on December 21st, two petrol bombs were thrown into a pastor's premises in Ahangama, Galle District. Thankfully, the pastor and his family were not injured.
On Christmas Eve, three congregations in the south of the country were attacked. The pastor of one church in Angunukolapalassa, Hambanthota District, was surrounded by over 300 villagers and Buddhist monks who demanded that he stop all worship services planned for Christmas Day. The same night, unidentified assailants threw firecrackers into a church compound and the adjoining pastor's residence in Hikkaduwa, Galle District. Another church was targeted in the same village by attackers who hurled stones at the building, shattering several windows.
Several days later, on December 27th, approximately 200 protesters demanded that construction halt on a church building in Buttala, Monaragala District. Although the police and some authorities intervened, the situation remained tense and, at last report, the construction had been temporarily suspended.
On January 12th, two churches were attacked in Hikkaduwa (the same location as two of the three Christmas Eve attacks). A mob of approximately 300 people stormed the two churches, throwing stones at the buildings. Christian literature, musical instruments and other goods were also set on fire or destroyed. Among the protestors were Buddhist monks who claimed that the Christian presence in the area was illegal. The same day, in Pitipana, Colombo District, a home where believers gathered for prayer was set ablaze during the early hours of the morning, and a threatening note was hung on the church's gate. The fire was fortunately doused before serious damage took place.
As attacks increase in Sri Lanka, pray that God's peace, which surpasses all understanding, will guard the hearts and minds of our brothers and sisters in Christ (Philippians 4:7). May Christians in this nation not resort to violence, but rather exemplify Christ's love and forgiveness to their attackers. Thank God for shielding His children from serious harm, asking for His continued protection from the advances of the enemy. Pray, too, that He will grant wisdom to the police and other authorities in this country so that they may work for justice and peace for all citizens.

EGYPT: Shot Christian Refused Medical Treatment

A Coptic Christian young man died on New Year's Eve from a gunshot wound to the head after three hospitals in Cairo turned him away.
Ihab Ghattas, 23, was shot outside Mar Girgis (St. George's) Church in the Ain Shams area of Cairo. Ihab, along with some other young people, had reportedly joined police in defending their church from members of the Muslim Brotherhood, a militant Islamist group, who were protesting outside the building at the time. Ihab was then reportedly shot by one of the protestors.
In a statement released on New Year's Day, the Maspero Youth Union (MYU), a Coptic activist group, claimed that Ihab died because of "negligence" on the part of the several hospitals that refused to treat him. Ihab was reportedly denied access to one hospital because it was deemed not to be an emergency and another due to a lack of beds. The third hospital refused to treat him due to the absence of an intensive care unit. A fourth hospital, St. Peter's in Heliopolis, admitted him, but Ihab died soon afterwards. According to the MYU, Ihab had, by this stage, been "bleeding for three hours." The group has called for an investigation.
Pray that God will comfort the family and friends of Ihab, and that they may rely even more on Him during their time of grief. Ask the Lord to grant wisdom and benevolence to Egyptian authorities so that they may do all they can to protect persecuted minorities. During this time of unrest in Egypt, may He also strengthen and grow His church.

NIGERIA: More than 30 Killed in Attack on Christian Village

More than 30 believers were killed on January 6th when hundreds of Fulani Muslim herdsmen, armed with guns and machetes, stormed Shonong village in Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State. According to local Christians, the soldiers stationed at the village to protect the believers joined the herdsmen in the assault.
"I was shot by soldiers I ran to for protection. We were all trapped in the village as there was no way of escape for us. We ran to the premises of the church, and some soldiers followed us there. They were shooting and the herdsmen were shooting too. It was chaos and confusion everywhere," one survivor shared.
Dozens of homes were set on fire, and the cattle belonging to the villagers were killed or stolen. Approximately 15 believers were critically injured and, at last report, were receiving care at a Christian hospital. Of those killed, many were women and children.
As our Christian family in Nigeria face relentless attacks and trials, may they rest in the knowledge that the Good Shepherd is walking closely with them through this difficult time (Psalm 23). Intercede on behalf of those who are mourning. May they cling to the promise that their loved ones are now experiencing life to the fullest in heaven. Pray that God will work mightily in the lives of those who perpetrated this attack, drawing them into relationship with His Son Jesus.

Does what you do today really matter? In all reality, you can get away with just about anything - particularly if you try to conceal it.  Yet, what you do is very important whether it is detected understood by others or not.

Life at its core is relational.  And what you do will always affect your relationships.  The first relationship that is affected by your actions is your relationship with God.  God is present and involved in your life whether you perceive it or not.  He created you and is with you no matter what.  Psalm 139 makes it clear that we cannot go anywhere to hide from God.  David writes, "Where can I go from Your Spirit?  Where can I flee from Your presence?" (Verse 7)  Neither life nor death, heaven nor hell, the bedroom nor the kitchen, times of darkness nor light, solitude nor crowds - none of these places can isolate us from God's presence.  And what we do reflects the nature of our relationship with Him.  He created us and lives with us; our activities express our level of interaction with Him and desire to walk with Him

The second relationship that is affected by what you do is your relationship with yourself.  The apostle Paul said, "Everything is permissible for me - but not everything is beneficial.  Everything is permissible for me - but I will not be mastered by anything." (1 Corinthians 6:12)  Paul is highlighting the fact that what we do impacts how we relate to ourselves.  Some things affirm our sense of self and our personal mastery and self-control; and other things can undermine the development of these perceptions and abilities.  Some activities can actually lead to personal slavery and bondage, naturally opening the door to guilt, fear, insensitivity and a lack of personal worth.  However, no matter how bound we may become in any area, an appropriate application of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus has the power to set us free.  "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free." (Galatians 5:1)

Lastly, what we do dramatically affects our relationships with others.  Unhealthy and/or sinful activity assaults and undermines relationships.  These activities lead us to hide from, ignore or aggress others.  We see the earliest examples of these patterns in the lives of Adam and Eve and Cain and Abel. (Genesis 3-4)  On the other hand, healthy, pure and loving activity and service draws us closer to people and builds relationships.  "Love builds others up." (1 Corinthians 8:1)  Though it may seem that our isolated acts have little to do with our relationships, it's not true.  We are connected to others - our families, friends, work-mates and fellow believers.  Our activities demonstrate our awareness of and commitment to these relationships.  If we live as if these relationships and ties do not exist, such living has negative relational impact.

So, be clear minded and self-controlled, so you can prayerfully relate to God, yourself and others.  And, love each other deeply, realizing that love covers a multitude of sin. (1 Peter 4:7-8)   Committed to relationship with you, Pastor Tom

INDONESIA: Christians Barred from Churches at Christmas

Several congregations in West Java, Indonesia, were prevented from celebrating Christmas in their church buildings this past December. Elsewhere in the country, hundreds of police and other security personnel guarded church buildings to ensure safety for worshippers.
The congregation of GKI Yasmin in Bogor, West Java, joined together to celebrate Christ's birth under a makeshift shelter. At the time of the service, their church building was sealed off and guarded by hundreds of officials, despite two Supreme Court rulings in the church's favour. While the congregation obtained a permit to open their church in 2006, the municipality promptly revoked permission after protests from some of the local residents, as well as hardline groups. Yet there is a glimmer of hope for the congregation as the new mayor of Bogor, due to take office in April, has pledged to "review the situation."
Also in West Java, the Isa Almasih Church in Cimahi was sealed by the municipal government on December 13th, despite having been used for worship for decades. A sign was posted on the building's gate after its closure, stating, "This building is for a residence and may not be used for worship services or similar activities." Church officials had long ago applied for a permit, but the application was delayed in bureaucracy without explanation -- a common occurrence with Christian permits in the country. In the weeks leading up to its closure, large mobs had twice gathered to protest against the use of a private residence as a church. At last report, the congregation was continuing to meet together in smaller cell groups.
Pray for a breakthrough for these churches, and that God will make a way for His people to meet together for worship in this predominantly Muslim country. Thank God for the strong faith of Christians in this area who continue to meet and praise Him despite opposition and persecution. Ask God to grant wisdom to church leaders as they lead their congregations so that they may be a light to their flock and to those who oppose them and their Lord.

IRAN: Believers Celebrate Christmas in Prison

On Christmas Eve, a group of believers gathered at the home of Mr. Hosseini were arrested when Iranian security authorities raided their Christmas service. The plain-clothes officials searched the believers and the residence, seizing all Christian books, CDs and laptops. They also confiscated the satellite TV receiver. Mr. Hosseini's neighbours, who witnessed the raid, were warned by officials not to speak with anyone about what they had seen. Their home was also searched, and the father of the family was insulted and beaten. At last report, the whereabouts and condition of the arrested Christians were not yet known.
In recent years, Christians have faced increased pressure and threats during the Christmas season and a greater number of churches have been monitored. Many have even celebrated Christ's birth while in jail, separated from their families and loved ones. One such believer, Farshid Fathi, has been incarcerated since 2010. (You can read more about his case at www.persecution.net/ir-2012-07-12.htm.) In a recent note to fellow believers, he wrote:
"Dear brothers and sisters,
We are celebrating Christmas in prison with honour and unexplainable joy in Christ. 2013 is going to end and we are very thankful to the Lord for everything we were given this year. I had called 2013 'the year of revelation.' Now I am very excited because I am calling 2014 'the year of God's presence.' God calls us to walk before Him and be blameless, as He said to Abraham. So far, walking before Him is very sweet and so exciting. It is filled with great endurance, afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, sleepless nights, hunger, purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love, truthful speech and the power of God. So my dear brothers and sisters, if you read this, be ready for a very exciting journey in 2014. Thank you so much for remembering me in your prayers after 1,100 days.
With blessings in Christ, your brother, Farshid."
While the Christmas season has come to a close for another year, please do remember our brothers and sisters who continue to languish in prison for their faith in the Christ Child. May they trust their unknown future to our God, who intimately knows each detail of their lives. Intercede on behalf of the recently arrested believers that they may soon be freed from prison. Also ask the Lord to bless Farshid. May the year ahead indeed be one in which this imprisoned believer, and other incarcerated Iranian Christians, sense the Lord's presence in a very real and tangible way.

CHINA: Update on Alimujiang Yimiti

This month marks Alimujiang Yimiti's sixth year in prison. Alimujiang was first charged in 2009 for "providing state secrets to overseas organizations." However, many believe the real reason for his incarceration is his zealous commitment to share the Gospel and for leading a church in the Uyghur area of China's northwest.
Alimujiang has been imprisoned since January of 2008. The following year he was sentenced to 15 years in detention. In April of 2010, his wife, Gulnur, was finally permitted to visit him for the first time since his imprisonment. Tragically, their son, who was only four years old at the time, could barely even recognize his father. At last report, Gulner is only able to visit her husband once per month at the most. The past six years have been incredibly difficult for this family, but God has faithfully sustained them. Gulnur recently shared that she had found a new job, and that her mother has become a believer! She also expressed how encouraged she is by the many prayers of brothers and sisters from around the world, as well as by the support of local Christians.
As this family marks another year with Alimujiang behind bars, please keep them close to your heart. Pray that Alimujiang will be released from prison soon so he can be reunited with his wife and children. May this family be encouraged by the prayers of their Christian family in Canada and throughout the world, deeply sensing that they are not alone in their struggle. Praise the Lord that Gulnur's mother has become a believer. Pray now that her faith will grow, eventually producing a great harvest. May God also bless Gulner in her new job. Ask for a special blessing on the couple's children who are missing the presence of their earthly father in their daily lives...that they would look to their Heavenly Father to sustain them.

DELAYED AND DENIED PRAYERS

“Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts” (James 4:3).
God will answer no prayer that adds to our honor or assists our temptations. In the first place, God does not answer the prayer of a person who harbors lust in his heart. All answers are dependent upon the plucking out of our hearts the evil, the lust, and the besetting sins.
"If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me" (Psalm 66:18).
The test of knowing whether or not our request is based on lust is very simple. How we handle delays and denials is the clue. Prayers founded on lust demand hasty answers. If the lusting heart does not get the desired thing quickly, it whimpers and cries, swoons and faints—or it breaks out in a spell of murmuring and complaining, finally accusing God of deafness.
“Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not" (Isaiah 58:3).
The lustful heart cannot see God's glory in His denials and delays. Yet did God not get more glory by denying Christ's prayer to save His life, if possible, from death? I shudder to think of where we would be today had God not denied that request.
God, in His justice, is obligated to delay or deny our prayers until they are purged of all selfishness and lust.
Could there be one simple reason why most of our prayers are hindered? Could it be a result of our ongoing flirtation with a lust or besetting sin? Have we forgotten that only those with clean hands and pure hearts can set their feet on His holy hill? Only a total forsaking of a pet sin will throw open the gates of heaven and unclog the blessings.
Instead of yielding, we run from counselor to counselor, trying to find help to cope with despair, emptiness, and restlessness. Yet, it is all in vain because sin and lust have not yet been plucked out. Sin is the root of all our problems. Peace comes only when we surrender and forsake all secret sin.

COLOMBIA: Displaced Christians Build a New Community

In 2007, approximately 50 Christian families were forced to leave their homes and move to a refugee village in Colombia's Andes Mountains. A member of VOMC's leadership team recently visited with these displaced brothers and sisters in Christ. He was touched by their stories of overwhelming pain and loss, as well as their testimonies of God's continued faithfulness and provision.
The Colombian Christians first began to face opposition for their faith when they stood against the tribal leaders of their home village. The tribal leaders, who have ties to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (also known as FARC), tried to force the Christians to steal, get drunk, take part in land raids, and participate in rituals relating to spiritism. When a natural disaster struck the area, forcing the whole community to flee their homes, the tribal leaders refused to share the government-provided aid with the believers.
As a result, the Christian families were forced to travel a long distance to another location where they set up the temporary refugee village. Another three dozen Christian families, who were expelled from their own villages because of their faith, were providentially united with fellow believers at the refugee site. Several of these Christians were also severely beaten and tortured by villagers before they were forced to flee with their families.
With help from VOM Finland and other Christians around the world, land was purchased nearby the refugee site so that these Colombian believers would be able to build a community of their own. With help from VOMC, this community will also operate its own radio station, a means of boldly broadcasting God's Word and reaching many others in need of salvation -- including those who are in opposition to the Gospel. One of the believers shared, "I'm so thankful for this help which gives us strength to keep on going. Thank you so much. Please remember to pray for us."
Please remember these brothers and sisters in your prayers! Thank the Lord for providing them with land so they can build a community of their own, and for the means to proclaim the 'Good News of the Gospel' through radio broadcasting. Pray that their village will be a bright light to their neighbours, and that many others will come to Christ because of their faithful witness. Intercede for the former tribal leaders and villagers who are walking in darkness so that they, too, may know the saving power of Christ's death and resurrection.

KENYA: Tensions High after Pastors Murdered

Two Kenyan women, Clarice and Sarah, remain in shock after their husbands were murdered in separate incidents on October 20th. Both murders are believed to be related to the unrest that has been taking place between Christians and Muslims in the Mombasa region. However, at last report, no one had claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Clarice's husband, a pastor at Mombasa's Vikwatani Redeemed Gospel Church, was found slumped in a chair with a Bible still in his lap as church leaders came in to prepare for the Sunday morning worship services. Pastor Charles Matole, 41, had been shot in the head. Clarice told a VOM worker that she believes he was murdered to scare Christians away from the area. In the months prior to his death, there were occasions when people threw rocks at the church building during prayer services. Police also neglected to follow up on death threats made against the pastor's life.
Like Clarice, Sarah is also in mourning for her husband, whose body was found in a brush pile that same morning in Kilifi, about 35 miles north of Mombasa. Pastor Ebrahim Kidata, who started 36 churches in the region and was recently named the new overseer of the church in Malindi County, had been out the day before to check on his cattle and some lumber that was to be used to build new tables for his church. Sarah grew concerned when she could not reach him on his cell phone, and her worst fears were realized when he was found strangled to death. In addition to his grieving widow, Pastor Ebrahim leaves behind seven children. Although two of the children are married, the five younger ones are of school age and still live in the family home. Sarah was shocked by her husband's murder as no threats had been received, and there appears to be little motive for his death.
Pray that the 'Father of the fatherless' and 'Protector of widows' will bring comfort, security and provision for Clarice, Sarah and their families during this difficult time. Ask God to intervene in these two communities of the Mombasa region so that tensions and strife may cease and the peace of Christ may reign. In the midst of both heartbreaking situations, may God have mercy on those who oppose Him and His people. Pray that many more in the Mombasa region will come to faith in Jesus.

IRAQ: Car Bombs Target Believers on Christmas Day

Two Christian areas of Baghdad, Iraq, were targeted in Christmas Day car bombings. In the first attack, two bombs were detonated in the busy market of a predominately Christian area, killing at least 10 people and injuring twice as many.
Shortly afterwards, a car bomb exploded as Christians departed from a Christmas service. At least 25 people were killed in the bombing, and many others were injured. At last report, there has been no claim of responsibility for the attacks. However, al-Qaeda and other insurgents have often targeted Iraq's dwindling Christian community.
Please join us in lifting up our Iraqi brothers and sisters in prayer to our Father, the God of all mercy. Pray that those mourning the loss of loved ones will be comforted, and that those who were injured will look to Jesus for physical and emotional healing. May the perpetrators behind these terrible attacks repent of their sins and seek to embrace Christ as Lord. Ask Him to shield and guard His precious children in this volatile part of the world from their enemies.

Nothing gives the believer so much joy—as fellowship with Christ. He has enjoyment as others have, in the common mercies of life; he can be glad both in God's gifts and God's works. But in all these separately, yes, and in all of them added together—he does not find such substantial delight—as in the matchless person of his Lord Jesus! He has wine which no vineyard on earth ever yielded; he has bread which all the richest grain-fields could never bring forth.
Where can such sweetness be found—as we have tasted in communion with our Beloved? In our esteem, the joys of earth are little better than husks for swine—when compared with Jesus, the heavenly manna. We would rather have one mouthful of Christ's love, and a sip of his fellowship—than a whole world full of carnal delights! What is the chaff—compared to the wheat? What is the sparkling plastic—compared to the true diamond? What is a dream—compared to the glorious reality? What is time's mirth, in its best form—compared to our Lord Jesus in His most despised estate?
If you know anything of spiritual life, you will confess that your highest, purest, and most enduring joys—must be the fruit of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God. No spring yields such sweet water—as that well of God which was dug with the soldier's spear! All earthly bliss is of the earth, earthy—but the comforts of Christ's presence are like Himself, heavenly. We can review our communion with Jesus, and find no dregs in this wine, no dead flies in this ointment. The joy of the Lord is solid and enduring. Vanity has not looked upon it—but discretion and prudence testify that it abides the test of years, and is in time and in eternity—worthy to be called the only true delight! For nourishment, consolation, exhilaration, and refreshment, no wine can rival the love of Jesus. Let us drink to the full!

Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, to God our Savior, who alone is wise, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. Amen.
 
What do you recall as being the most joyful moment of your life? I heard the old story of a man who proudly boasted that he had been married 35 happy years to his lovely wife, and then added that out of 46 that wasn’t too bad. How sad! My dear Joyce and I have been married since 1952, and one of my greatest joys is to have her by my side.
 
Frequently I mention the sad faces we see all around us. It is almost impossible to observe people who express joy. In some church services there appears to be great joy. Sadly it too frequently is a copycat joy, where people mimic those around them without really having true joy within.
 
If you want a reason for joy, please read these three verses from the small book of Jude. By the way, he was a half-brother of Jesus, and brother of James. Here he expresses joy about Jesus in that only Jesus can keep us from stumbling and present us faultless before His presence. That is because Jesus paid a price we could never pay when He died for our sins.
 
That, my dear heart, is worthy of joy unspeakable and full of glory! If you have lost the pure joy of your salvation, stop and take the time to realize the wonderful eternity we have waiting for us because of our new life in Christ.
 
Blessings dear hearts. Draw near to God today, trust Him completely and be a blessing!

EGYPT: High-Profile Convert Jailed for 'Inciting Strife'

Mohammed Hegazy, a well-known Christian campaigner for religious liberty, has been detained in Egypt for allegedly inciting "sectarian strife." Sources are concerned that the 31-year-old believer may be enduring torture in prison.
Mohammed (now widely known by his Christian name, Bishoy Armia Boulous), was arrested on the morning of December 4th at a café in Minya, Upper Egypt. Security forces claim he had been working for a Christian satellite TV channel and contributing to a "false image" that there is violence being perpetrated against Christians in Minya.
Those familiar with the case argue that Mohammed's arrest had nothing to do with any reporting work but was rather the result of ongoing retaliation for his conversion to Christianity. After embracing the Christian faith in 1998, he was arrested many times. On one occasion, the imprisoned believer was severely tortured for three days.
In August 2007, Mohammed was the first Egyptian to ever file a legal suit to change his religious identity on his ID card. The court later ruled against him on the grounds that Sharia (Islamic law) forbids conversions from Islam. In April 2010, an appeals court suspended the case indefinitely. As a result of his conversion and attempts to change his ID card, Mohammed has received multiple death threats, forcing him, his wife and their two children into hiding. His family is reportedly now living in an undisclosed country in Europe.
As our brother-in-Christ faces yet another grueling trial because of his faith, pray that God will grant him needed strength and grace for each moment. May he echo the Apostle Peter's determination to obey the Lord regardless of what mere man says (Acts 5:29). Ask the Lord to also be especially near to his wife and children so that peace may reign in their hearts during this difficult time.

ALGERIA: Church Attacked for Third Time

On the night of November 12th, a group of assailants attempted to set a church ablaze in southern Algeria. The group dispersed after police arrived, but no suspects were apprehended.
The church has faced other attacks in recent years. In 2010, assailants broke through the church's gates and entered the building in an attempt to steal the crucifix from the roof. In November of 2012, a group threatened to burn down the church and kill the pastor. "There are people who try to intimidate us...to push us out of here," the pastor explains. "I think it is the growth of our community that disturbs them."
Persecution is intensifying in the country as Islamist groups become increasingly intolerant of other expressions of faith and push for the institution of Sharia law. Less than .5 percent of the population is Christian.
Please bring this pastor and his congregation before the Lord in prayer. Ask Him to guard their hearts against fear and anxiety. Despite the opposition they are presently facing, may they continue faithfully meeting together for worship (Hebrews 10:23-25). Pray that God will also work powerfully in the lives of the assailants, drawing them into relationship with Himself and His people.

AFGHANISTAN: Convert in Danger of Deportation from the Netherlands

Mostafa Najafi, an Afghan convert to Christianity who fled his home country to seek asylum in the Netherlands, is facing the risk of deportation. After his immigration case was rejected, he was imprisoned for four months. Now, during his detainment in the immigration camp, he faces the possibility of deportation at any time. He also has received threats from hardline Muslims within the camp.
Mostafa, formerly a Muslim, became a Christian about nine months ago. "The first time I got a chance to read the Bible, I realized that I had found answers to many of the unanswered questions I had all my life," he shared.
His acceptance of Christ comes at great risk, as conversion from Islam is considered a crime punishable by death in his home country. When asked what happens to Christians who return to Afghanistan, Mostafa gave this troubling response: "Everyone is aware of the religious extremism in Afghanistan. Even my own father, when he found out that I had become a Christian, told me that 'killing you is my duty, it is my mandatory jihad.'"
Please join us in praying that Mostafa's case will be reviewed with great heartfelt concern and that, as a result, he will be permitted to stay in the Netherlands. Also raise in prayer the immigration officials, asking the Lord to help them recognize the very real dangers facing converts from Islam so they will serve as humanitarian rescuers by offering security to Mostafa and other believers like him. May God shield Mostafa from harm while in the immigration camp. Pray that his devotion to Jesus will lead others to the Christian faith.

Many are they that are taken up with Christmas but aren't taken up with Me.  Christmas is as a God to many who have no time to learn of the one for whom you celebrate this season of love.  Many are they who have such a hatred for Me that they don't want a day to celebrate the birth of the Christ of Christmas.  Without Me there would be no Christmas, and without Me there would be no love among mankind.  God the Father would have you to be as excited all the time
About the one He sent to be your Lord and Savior as you are on the day called Christmas by those who want to honor Me.  Many honor Christmas who know Me not.  Many do not want Me to have part in their Christmas celebration.
I call My people to draw near and worship Me each and every day for I say unto you I AM always as pure and holy each and every day as I AM at this special time when you celebrate My birth.
I say unto one and all, take time to keep Me close to your heart during this time of Christmas celebration and keep Me as one dearest to your heart.  I would have each and every one know that I AM the Christ child that you are to commemorate and I live to be your Lord and Savior.  Come unto Me for I steadily await your coming.

CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC: Country Descends into Chaos

As rebel groups and soldiers ravage the country of Central African Republic (CAR), the international community fears the possibility of religious genocide. The rebels, known as "Seleka" (meaning "Alliance"), have been pillaging villages, raping women, conscripting children as soldiers, and brutally murdering innocent victims in recent months. Sources estimate that approximately 10 percent of the population has been displaced.
The rebel group's former leader, Michel Djotodia, ousted the country's president earlier this year. He later disbanded the Seleka rebels, but the violence has continued unabated. The majority of the rebels are Muslims, some of whom have come from neighbouring countries such as Chad and Sudan.
Approximately half of the population of CAR is Christian, a quarter is Muslim, and the remaining has indigenous beliefs. While Muslims and Christians have largely lived at peace together, the ongoing attacks from the Seleka rebels threaten to unravel the country's unity. Armed Christian groups have formed to defend themselves; however, some have launched counterattacks on Muslim communities. As the violence continues, both Christians and Muslims are becoming increasingly hostile towards one another and the fighting is taking on a more religious tone.
A concerned church leader stated, "The Christians feel betrayed by the Muslims and are starting to feel vengeance in their hearts.... This is a very big challenge for the church."
As members of Christ's body of believers, let us lift up the church in the Central African Republic as they face this difficult trial. Pray that the Seleka rebels' acts of terror will cease, and that peace will come to this beleaguered nation. May these Christians not resort to violence, but rather serve as instruments of God's grace. Let's also intercede on behalf of those who are targeting Christ's followers so that they, too, will know of His love, forgiveness and blessing (Romans 12:14,21).

BANGLADESH: Believers Ordered to Stop Christian Activities

Just months after the construction of a church building had been ordered to cease, a "committee" was formed to stop all Christian activity in Bilbathuagani village, Tangail. The committee is made up of political leaders, Muslim elders, and an elected local government official.
The church construction initially began in early September by approximately 25 believers who had been meeting secretly for three years. Five days after the construction had commenced, the local council chairman and approximately 200 Muslims went to the site and ordered the building project to stop. The following day, after announcements were made in the area mosques, more than 1,000 Muslims gathered outside the chairman's office to protest the church. A committee was then formed to stop the believers from "misguiding" Muslims.
"Never will the local Muslims accept those people's conversion to Christianity," the council chairman announced. "It is impossible for them to live as Christians in this Muslim area. It would be like stirring up a hornet's nest. This is the second time Christians are trying to ruffle a few feathers in our Islamic society. Ten years ago, some Christians tried similarly to convert some Muslims here, but we beat those Christians and they left this place forever."
Since the church construction was halted, several of the Christians in the community have returned to Islam.
Ask God to give the believers in this village strength to persevere in the midst of ongoing pressure. Pray that many more Muslims in this community will learn the truth about Jesus Christ and accept Him as their Saviour and Lord. Pray that religious freedom will be respected in Bangladesh for all citizens, including those of the very small Christian population..

NIGERIA: Christian Villages Attacked; Believers Pressured to Recant

Approximately 40 people were tragically murdered in the early hours of November 26th when assailants launched attacks on four Christian-majority villages in Plateau State. Those murdered included pregnant women and young children. The attackers are believed to be members of the Fulani tribe, which is predominately Muslim. Some Christian leaders believe Islamic militants are inciting the Fulani people to attack believers in order to acquire their land.
These latest attacks follow several earlier incidents of persecution against the church in recent weeks. On November 3rd, eight Christians were killed in Borno State, and several church buildings destroyed. The following week, from November 11th to the 13th, Boko Haram militants attacked Christian villages and murdered over 20 people. On November 15th, government officials offered money to approximately 19 Christians who converted to Islam during a service held at the National Mosque in the country's capital. According to sources, officials handed out the equivalent of more than $85,000 CAD to the group of converts.
The Rev. Dr. Soja Bewarang, president of the Church of Christ in Nations, reports, "Even as we are looking at these issues, we need not forget that God has the final say on man and his security concerns.... Therefore, we must always surrender our security concerns to the Lord, because the watchman watches in vain if the Lord does not watch alongside with him" (see Psalm 127).
Pray that the believers in Nigeria will trust in the Lord to watch over them and guard their lives, whether in life or in death. Ask that His peace will reign between the Muslim and Christian populations in Nigeria, and that Boko Haram's attempts to create chaos will be thwarted. Also please remember the many believers in Nigeria who are grieving the loss of loved ones.
