Central African Republic
Church leaders call on world leaders to intervene in crisis
Amid further fighting in the Central African Republic [CAR] this week, in which 30 people are reported to have died, church leaders have issued a joint appeal for urgent action to prevent a 'genocidal interfaith civil war' in the country. They were attending a three-day conference in the capital, Bangui, organised by Open Doors.
The Bangui Declaration also calls on the international community and Christians around the world to ensure that security is restored and that those affected by the crisis receive emergency humanitarian aid.
Since the government of President Bozize was deposed by the Seleka coalition of Michel Djotodia in March this year, the country has descended into lawlessness. Mr Djotodia disbanded the rebels in September after he was sworn in as President, but dissidents have continued to terrorise civilians across the country with looting, the destruction of public and private property, kidnapping, torture and summary executions being common.
The crisis has deepening religious overtones. "In this situation, Christians are specifically most affected," the Bangui Declaration stated. We have frequent reports of incidents of rebels carrying out rapes against civilians, desecrating churches and perpetrating violence against priests and pastors. Some church leaders have been assassinated.
An immense humanitarian crisis is in the making. The UN has warned that the entire population of 4.6 million people is being affected by the violence. It is estimated that 1.6 million have been displaced and thousands have little to eat.
More than 100 cross-denominational church leaders attended the meeting and they have expressed deep appreciation for the role played by Open Doors.
Source: Open Doors, BBC
Please Pray:

 1. That the church's appeal to world leaders for assistance will be heard and will lead to a quick and effective response. Praise God that the UN passed a resolution yesterday to address the security situation, and pray for further discussions
 2. Give thanks that church leaders from across denominations have joined together. Pray that, together, they will present a unified voice and clear testimony for Christ amid the crisis
 3. For Open Doors teams in the country as they work with local church leaders to serve those in need and plan how best to raise awareness of the crisis to those in power.
With many thanks for your prayers.

TANZANIA: Church Leader Severely Burned in Acid Attack
Source: Voice of the Martyrs USA, The Washington Post, Charisma News
There is mounting fear of religious persecution taking place in Tanzania as a result of attacks being made against Christian clergy, churches and some Muslim leaders. In a recent incident on September 13th, a priest in Zanzibar suffered severe burns after having acid poured on him by one or more militant Muslims just outside an Internet café. Rev. Anselm Mwang'amba, 61, received burns on his face, chest and arms. VOM sources report that although he cried out for help, the owners of the Internet café delayed in bringing needed water for the dilution of the burning acid.
Although the afflicted reverend was taken to the Mnazi Mmoja Hospital in Zanzibar, his colleagues are considering the possibility of transferring him to a hospital in Dar es Salaam so he will be farther away from his persecutors. Church leaders believe the attack is linked to a militant Islamist group known as "Awakening," which is campaigning for Zanzibar's independence as an Islamic state. In reference to the attack, diocesan chancellor Rev. Cosmas Shayo states, "We are urging Christians not to retaliate." Other reports of persecution against followers of Jesus in Tanzania can be found at www.persecution.net/News-Articles-Tanzania.
May the Lord completely heal both the physical and emotional wounds Rev. Mwang'amba has experienced as a result of the attack (Psalm 30:2). Pray that the church in Tanzania will not be fearful due to this incident and other similar attacks, but rather would choose to lean even more on our Almighty God who has promised His people strength in times of trouble. Ask Him to thwart any plans the enemy may have to inflict further harm on these believers through the militant group.

IRAN: More Christians Imprisoned for their Faith
Sources: Voice of the Martyrs USA and Mohabat News
Iranian Christians are requesting prayer for their country following a series of arrests that took place about the time the government released some prisoners in an effort to appear more liberal. At least 20 Christians, mainly from Muslim backgrounds, were detained in Tehran, Karaj, Isfahan and Tabriz. As a sign of being politically progressive, the government of newly appointed President Hassan Rouhani pardoned and then released 11 prisoners of conscience on September 20th.
The next day, the family of imprisoned Pastor Behnam Irani went to meet with a judge in Karaj, Iran, asking for pardon to be granted and thus his release from prison, as was done for the other prisoners of conscience. Unfortunately, the judge denied this request, stating that Pastor Behnam had to complete his six-year term. The family members were then told that the only way the imprisoned pastor would be pardoned and released prior to this term was if he repented and returned to Islam. To learn more about his situation, please review www.persecution.net/ir-2012-07-19.htm.
Thank the Lord for the recent release of the 11 prisoners. May He protect and sustain those who remain in jail, especially Pastor Behnam who is suffering from poor health. Praise God for the growth of the church in Iran despite the many challenges. Ask that He will use these incidents of persecution to further spread the Gospel and strengthen the faith of His children. Also, in accordance to Scripture, pray for the Lord to work through President Hassan Rouhani and all those in authority so there will be peace in the land.

PRISONER UPDATE
KAZAKHSTAN: Pastor Now Under House Arrest Pending Trial
Source: Forum 18 News
Pastor Bakhytzhan Kashkumbayev, who has been imprisoned for about five months in Astana, has been placed under house arrest for the remainder of his pre-trial detention, according to a court decision. The 66-year-old pastor has not seen his wife Alfiya or any other family members since his May 17th arrest. (For a previous report providing more details on his arrest, please go to www.persecution.net/kz-2013-08-01.htm.)
While under house arrest, Pastor Bakhytzhan is "banned from associating with anyone apart from close relatives living with him, receiving and sending letters, holding conversations with the use of any communication devices, and is only able to leave his home for medical appointments."
The pastor was initially arrested on charges of "causing considerable harm to the psychological health" of a church member and accused of using "stupefying substances" on other members of the church, a reference made to the red tea that was used as a non-alcoholic Communion wine. However, one member insists that Pastor Bakhytzhan "is totally innocent and has not harmed my health at all." The pre-trial detention is scheduled to last until November 17th.
Thank the Lord for the opportunity Pastor Bakhytzhan has been given to return home for the duration of his pre-trial detention. In the interim, please pray for God's favour and intervention in this case to ensure a favourable outcome. May He also strengthen the faith of Pastor Bakhytzhan, his family and the congregation members of the church...while using these circumstances to accomplish His greater plans.
We encourage you to share your prayers on behalf of these suffering brothers and sisters in Christ by posting on our prayer wall:www.persecution.net/prayer-wall.htm.

In Every Generation God Needs Godly Leaders
Zac Poonen

1 Kings begins with David, the man after God’s own heart, and ends with Ahab, the worst king ever to rule over Israel. Israel begins as a powerful nation and ends as a divided nation and with many evil kings ruling over both kingdoms – especially over Israel.
The condition of God’s people depends greatly on the spirituality or the lack of it in their leaders. Whenever Israel had a godly leader, they moved forward in godly ways. When they had a carnal leader, they moved away from God into carnality.
The great need among God’s people has always been for godly leaders. Jesus looked out at the multitudes in His day and saw them as sheep without a shepherd. He told His disciples to pray that God would thrust forth shepherds into the midst of His people (Matt.9:36-38).
When God looks at the churches across the world today, He sees the same need for godly leaders. The challenge that comes to us then is to satisfy the heart of God in our generation by being the type of men and women He is looking for.
In every generation God needs godly leaders. We cannot depend on the wisdom of the leaders of previous generations. David could not rule over Israel forever. He would die, and someone else would have to take over. What would become of Israel depended on the type of person that the next king would be.
God raises up a godly man to start a work in one generation. He becomes old and dies. Will the leaders in the next generation have only the founder’s knowledge and his doctrines but not his godliness and his knowledge of God? Then the people will certainly go astray.

--

He [the enemy] will tell you at the beginning of your lives, it is too soon to serve God---he will tell you at the end, it is too late. Oh, be not deceived!

"I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears." Psalm 34:4
India
Christians in Chhattisgarh state under pressure to renounce their faith
Fear is gripping Christians in Chhattisgarh state in central India, as Hindu mobs are stepping up their campaign of violence and intimidation against believers.
In April, a church in the town of Taragaon was demolished. Since then, members of Bajrang Dal, a militant Hindu group, have been carrying Hindu idols to the houses of Christian believers and asking them to bow down to them.
In a recent case of persecution, a group of Bajrang Dal members took a Hindu idol to Taragaon and announced through loud-speakers that Christian believers should come out of their homes and worship. A local Christian told an Open Doors worker, "In this atmosphere of fear and pressure, we do not know who to turn to for help. The police are biased and do nothing to protect the Christians."
In another incident, Mitko Kashyap, a 60-year-old woman, was beaten by her nephew because she refused to deny her faith. Previously, Mitko had been a member of the church in Taragaon that was demolished, and was now meeting with fellow believers in a private house to worship. Although the attack on Mitko was registered with the local police, no action has been taken - despite her attacker boasting openly about what he had done.
On the same day, in the village of Kongud, two brothers, Maan Kumar Nag and Mankuram Nag, were pressurised by local militants to give up their faith and stop going to church. When the brothers refused they were forced to leave their home and take all their belongings with them.
Source: Open Doors
Please Pray:
For the safety of the Christian community in this area as they do not have a voice and the police do little to protect them
That God would banish the fear that many Christians feel. Pray that they would be strengthened, especially when pressurised to renounce their faith
For Open Doors staff working to encourage persecuted Christians, through biblical training, community development projects, advocacy support and prayer.
With many thanks for your prayers.

Persecuted Church by Voice of the Martrys

"This war is like a knife in the heart of the church. Nohuman can stand that suffering. But there is God's presence.I can see Christ in the midst of darkness.'"
-VOM Contact (regarding the present situation in Syria)

SYRIA: A New Road to Damascus
Source: VOM USA and VOMC Partners
The war in Syria is one of the greatest crises experienced in the Middle East within the past 20 years. It has claimed the lives of more than 100,000 people, both Muslim and Christian. Thus far, more than two million Syrians have fled for refuge to neighbouring countries. Yet, in the midst of the crisis, members of our persecuted family in this part of the world are boldly reaching out with the love of Jesus. And the reactions of Muslims have been astonishing. Christians, once widely considered "infidels" in Syria, are now often affectionately referred to as "the Bible People."
"When you hear about one Muslim coming to Christ, it's a great thing, and everybody rejoices," explains a VOM Syrian contact. "Today, in Syria, I'm not talking about one person. We're talking about hundreds and even thousands of Muslims coming to know Christ!" Although there are great risks when ministering in the midst of this war zone, another Christian worker affirms that they are not allowing fear to prevent the Lord's work: "God is doing miracles inside the country. But even if He allows us to die, it will be an honour for us...to glorify His name."
Teams of believers are working sacrificially in the refugee camps, extending compassion while sharing both material and spiritual aid. The opportunities for ministry today exceed what we thought possible. Working with the Syrian church and local workers, VOM is actively distributing vitally needed necessities such as food, blankets, Bibles and Christian literature; providing support for in-country pastors and evangelistic teams; and proclaiming the Gospel through radio broadcasts. To participate in this project through our Relief and Development Fund, go towww.persecution.net/donate/donate2.html. More information on the situation in Syria can be found at www.persecution.net/sy-2013-07-18.htm.
While we can thank the Lord for bringing many Syrians out of darkness and into His marvellous light, we are mindful of our need to pray for these fellow believers who are still facing not only the horrific effects of war but also continued persecution. Please intercede for those who are bravely using this opportunity to advance the Kingdom of God. May He greatly bless our combined efforts to convey His love in action, peace in the midst of the storm, and the hope of eternal salvation.

NIGERIA: Innocent Civilians Killed in Recent Extremist Raids
Sources: Release International, AFP, BBC, Stefanos Foundation
Two pastors have been killed and three churches destroyed, as militants attack yet more civilian targets in northeast Nigeria. In Borno state, a pastor was killed on September 26th when militants raided and set fire to the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria (EYN) which is located in Barawa village. Another EYN church was burned down in nearby Chikide village.
On the same day, in Yobe state, suspected Boko Haram Islamist militants opened fire inside a church in Dorawa town, killing another pastor and his two children. They then set fire to the church and two other buildings before fleeing. The Dorawa church is just 28 kilometres from the site of a brutal attack that took place in July of 2013 on a school where dozens of students were killed. A similar attack took place recently on September 29th at the College of Agriculture in Gujba district, Yobe, where gunmen killed an estimated 50 students as they slept. Previous reports of persecution in Nigeria, including video podcasts, can be located at www.persecution.net/nigeria.htm.
May God greatly comfort and sustain all who have been bereaved due to these recent militant attacks. Pray that He will raise up new spiritual leaders for the two churches that have tragically lost their pastors due to the violence perpetrated against Christians and other innocent members of their communities. Thank the Lord for the strong overcoming faith of His people in Nigeria, encouraging many more to turn to Him during this time of crisis. May the country's governing authorities be granted wisdom, resolve and courage as they work to stamp out the devastating attacks of the Boko Haram extremists.

PRISONER UPDATE
IRAN: Female Prisoner Hospitalized for Serious Heart Condition
Source: Mohabat News
Iranian Christian convert, Maryam Naghash-Zargaran (also known as Nasim), is presently serving a four-year term in the women's ward of Evin Prison for "propagating against the Islamic regime, and colluding to undermine national security." The court verdict states that Nasim had started a house church and was evangelizing Muslim women and youth. Since her incarceration, the 35-year-old believer has experienced some serious health concerns.
On Sunday, September 29th, Nasim was transferred from Evin prison to Modares hospital to be treated after an apparent heart attack. Although she had previously undergone heart surgery, the stressful conditions of imprisonment have acerbated her heart disease. The mental anguish and resulting depression Nasim also recently suffered have compounded matters, indicating that her imprisonment is posing serious risks to her health.
Reportedly, there are three other known female Christian converts and activists being detained in Evin prison. Like Nasim, Somayeh Bakhtiari, Ronak Samavat, and Nasim Zanjani have also been sentenced for holding prayer meetings and worship services in house churches. To learn more about Iran's political stance on Christianity, go to www.persecution.net/iran.htm.
It's very difficult for us to truly understand the tremendous pressures Muslim converts face in a society that harshly opposes the Christian faith. This typically includes persecution at the hands of their family members who may disown them, cause physical harm and possibly death. Please pray for God's protection, strength and peace upon Nasim and others who are imprisoned in Iran for their faith...those who've bravely spread the Gospel message of Jesus Christ despite the great dangers posed to them. May mercy be extended to these believers by the legal system, so they will be released. Let's also pray that Nasim will be completely healed and restored to full health and wellness, serving as a testimony of God's faithfulness and power in her life.
We encourage you to share your prayers on behalf of these suffering brothers and sisters in Christ by posting on our prayer wall:www.persecution.net/prayer-wall.htm.

Window washers
“For the Lord will be your confidence…” Proverbs 3:26.

Have you ever looked up and noticed window washers at work on a skyscraper?
Why do you suppose they can work so confidently suspended so high above the ground?

They are secure because they know that their safety harnesses are fastened to the building itself.
And their harnesses will hold even if the platform should fall.

Your life can be lived on the edge, with confidence like that.

When we give our lives to Jesus Christ-
He becomes our safety and our security.

Because of Him-
- we can risk living life to the fullest and be all that we were created to be.

He keeps us secure-
- even though life is often insecure,
- even though we get disappointed,
- even though the bottom falls out.

How about you?
Do you have security for today, no matter what challenges and dangers you face?

How about tomorrow?
Why not try living life with Christ one day at a time for a life that’s secure and yet full of excitement?

--
Now I hate my sins!

(John Newton)
"They will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they willweep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn." Zechariah 12:10

"...For (God) Himself has said, 'I will never leave you nor forsake you.'

IRAQ: Trusting God Amidst Escalating Violence
Source: VOMC Contact

The following is an urgent update received recently from Canon Andrew White:
"I returned to Baghdad following a trip to the U.S. and Canada. Whilst the trip was very good...when I arrived, I found things the most desperate they have ever been. The violence and murders have ascended to such levels that scores of people are being killed each day.... Things are so awful, the Lord is our only hope.

"Violence is all around us. Today alone, there have been 15 suicide bombs. Yesterday, there were even car bombs in the safety of the Kurdish city of Erbil. In the past day alone, one bomb at a funeral killed 123 people. Most of what really happened has not even been on the news. Yesterday, I preached on the hope of the Second Coming. That is all we have to hold on to, for 'soon and very soon we are going to see the Lord.'
"It is so painful to have person after person come to me and say they have got to leave, including my son who has been with me since he was ten. With him leaving...I confess I thought, 'How on earth will I cope?' Then I remembered that (God) who has called me to this place will never fail me. As He remained with Daniel, so He will remain with me. You cannot leave those you love, and you cannot make those you love stay, when in reality you know how dangerous it is for them.... Thank you for standing with me in the midst of such pain. May God bless you much." To view a video clip featuring Canon White and other members of the church in Iraq, go to www.persecution.tv/iraq.
What a consolation it is to know that God will never leave us nor forsake us, no matter what circumstances we may be facing. And how much more meaningful are His promises in times of great uncertainty and chaos. May Canon White and the remnant of believers there in Iraq be reminded that they are surrounded by God's mighty army of angels and, more importantly, His powerful presence. In addition to receiving the Lord's strength and encouragement, pray that they will also be given opportunities to minister His hope, provision and healing to the unsaved, needy, bereaved, hurting, fearful and despondent with the Good News of the Gospel.
KAZAKHSTAN: Deportation Due to "Illegal Missionary Activity"
Source: Forum 18 News Service

After authorities ordered that Baptist pastor Viktor Lim be deported from Kazakhstan, he was given no alternative but to forcibly leave in mid-August. Pastor Lim, a stateless person who lived in the country for 20 years prior to this ruling, was convicted for leading a registered religious community. (Incidentally, his wife and children are Kazakh citizens.) Authorities classify such action as "illegal missionary activity," which is punishable by fine and, in the case of a non-citizen, deportation.
Attempts to appeal the court order proved futile. "The appeal hearing lasted just ten minutes -- it was a pure formality," relates the disappointed pastor. Zhumagul Alimbekov, head of the Religious Affairs Department of Almaty Region, which lodged the suit against Pastor Lim, refused to discuss his deportation and the possibility of deporting yet another church leader, Russian Orthodox priest Father Sofrony. Learn more about the challenges facing servants of the Lord in Kazakhstan by going to www.persecution.net/kazakhstan.htm.
Even though mere mortals may try to eradicate God from their lives and society, they will never successfully succeed at changing the fact that He alone is the Master Creator...the Almighty 'King of kings' and 'Lord of lords.' When He gloriously returns, all people -- of every tribe and nation -- will humbly bow down before Him. In the meantime, may His Holy Spirit continue to work mightily in lives, including those in Kazakhstan who are denying His existence by erroneously trying to evict Him from their country. Pray that their spiritual eyes and understanding will be opened to the reality of His existence and utmost supremacy.

Mohamed El Baladi was released from the Moroccan prison where he had been confined since his arrest in late August. However, the release has only been granted until his official appeal hearing, which is scheduled for October 10th. Mohamed was initially sentenced to two-and-a-half years' imprisonment for the crimes of evangelism and "shaking the faith of a Muslim." To review a previous report on this case, please go towww.persecution.net/ma-2013-09-12.htm.
Without forewarning, Mohamed was summoned to a surprise hearing on September 26th. His family became aware of it when his sister went to visit him in prison and deliver groceries, only to be told that he was not available due to his presence in court. Later that afternoon, they received news of Mohamed's release and the scheduling of his upcoming appeal hearing.
As he spoke with family and friends, Mohamed confirmed that he faced severe abuse and pressure to recant his Christian faith and return to Islam. The police also attempted to force Mohamed to provide them the names of other believers, both Moroccan and foreigners, with whom he was connected. They also spread false rumours to incite other prisoners to further abuse him.
Based on reports from friends who have spoken with Mohamed, it is believed that his family was upset at his conversion to Christianity and had pressed for a harsher sentence to prompt him to renounce his faith.
Let us first give thanks to the Lord for answering our prayers on behalf of Mohamed. May this young believer be granted continual favour, resulting in a successful appeal. Pray that his legal representatives will be given wisdom and insight as they represent him. May the outcome of this case encourage the faith of the church throughout Morocco, resulting in increased boldness among fellow believers (Acts5:29). Please also intercede for those in need of God's salvation, including Mohamed's own family, so that many more will be able to enter His eternal Kingdom.
We invite you to pray with us on behalf of our suffering family of believers around the world by posting on our prayer wall:www.persecution.net/prayer-wall.htm.

OPEN DOORS UPDATE
'An insightful event', says MEP.And also 'an honour to co-host' – just two tweets from British MEP, Catherine Stihler, after Open Doors'Save Syria meeting at the European Parliament on Tuesday.
Thanks to Open Doors supporters, every MEP in the UK and Ireland heard about the meeting!

1,803 people in the UK and Ireland sent a massive 10,926 emails to MEPs in just 6 days, joining others across Europe... and the room was packed – 85 people in a room built for 60!

Ms Stihler's co-host, Dutch MEP Ria Oomen-Ruijten, tweeted: 'good to see so many colleagues and participants here'.
Christians 'deserve to be treated as fully part of the future of Syria'.
Open Doors EU Advocacy Officer, Esther Kattenberg, explained that the church in Syria is caught 'between a rock and a hard place', facing increased pressure in their desire to remain neutral and side neither with the widely condemned current al-Assad government nor with the disparate opposition.
Archdeacon Emanuel Youkhana of the Assyrian Church in the East emphasised that the Christian minority were 'the very fabric of the country, whose existence there dates back to the first century', adding that they 'deserve to be treated as fully part of the future of Syria and whatever political solution is found'. He called on the EU to use its influence to ensure minorities have input into the proposed international meeting in Geneva to discuss Syria – a point we’ll be following up with the UK government.

The EP’s responseRia Oomen-Ruijten MEP said the 'European Parliament had been concerned about the plight of Syria's Christians since October 2011 and that a political, democratic solution remained Syria’s best chance of future recovery'. A representative for EU foreign affairs, Maciej Golubiewski from the European External Action Service, said he agreed that this should be the EU's course of action, although he refused to make any promises.
Read World Watch Monitor’s report of the meeting.
The voice of the church heard
Fr. Youkhana said the voice of the church was being heard. That's partly thanks to the signatures of a staggering 169,348 people from around the world! But we still need many more people to speak out.

If you've already signed the petition – our huge thanks for being part of this! Please take a moment to encourage your friends to sign too!
If you've yet to do so, sign today and urge politicians to keep the plight of the church at the front of their thinking.
What's next? We'll continue to engage with the EU and the UK government– your voice will count at every meeting we have. On the same day as the EP meeting, Open Doors UK&I also addressed a Conservative Christian Fellowship prayer breakfast at the Conservative Party Conference – with some very positive comments from MPs present.
Open Doors Sweden is presenting a seminar on Syria at the Swedish Parliament later this month—a first for them. UK Advocacy Director, Stephen Rand, will speak at that meeting: your signatures will underline all he says.

The petition will be presented to the UN at the end of the year. We want to make the biggest possible impact so please pray that God’s hand will be on that presentation and many more people will sign the petition by 30 November.

A Word In Due Season

REST FOR AWHILE

Scripture:  Mark 6:31 (Amplified)  "Come away by yourselves to a deserted place, and rest for awhile."

The disciples were so busy that they had no time to rest.  In fact, they couldn't even sit and eat a meal in leisure without being interrupted by the people who continually followed them.  The masses drew upon their time and energies and left them totally spent.  Finally, Jesus called them away to a solitary place just to rest.

Our own lifestyles have become similar to this scenario.  We have become exhausted physically, mentally, and emotionally because our schedules allow very little time for us to rest and regenerate.  Often, if we are not careful and determined, we even fail to make time to pray and study God's Word.  Yet, our strength to maintain life's demands and cope with stress depends upon getting physical rest and having fellowship and communion with the Lord.  Isaiah 40:29-31 tells us that as we wait upon the Lord and linger in His presence, God will increase our strength, causing it to multiply and making it abound.  As we rest in His presence and renew ourselves spiritually, God renews our physical strength and causes us to be able to walk and run without getting weary or faint.  Isaiah said even the young men would fall with exhaustion, but those who wait upon the Lord would be like eagles, full of strength, soaring above every situation.

Jesus also told us what to do if we become weary, over burdened, and stressed out.  He said, "Come to Me, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28-30).  Supernatural strength is imparted when we come into the presence of the Lord.  He said, "Take My yoke upon you."  In other words, "Surrender everything you are to Me.  If you will allow Me to pull the load, you will find relief from pressures and be refreshed in your spirit.  Get to know Me, for I am very gentle of spirit.  If I give you a burden to bear, it will be easy and light, for I will never put more on you than you can bear.  Cast all your cares on Me, for I care for you.  Come away with Me to a solitary place for a while and rest in My presence.  As you become still, you will come to know that I am God (Psalms 46:10) and peace will enter your soul.  As My presence surrounds you, you will find refreshing and blessed quietness for I will cause you to rest." +++

Persecuted Church News ( Open Doors)
Save Syria urgent action: speak up for Syrian Christians in the European Parliament.
Over 150,000 people have now signed our Save Syria petition... and next Tuesday, 1 October, their voices will be heard at a special Open Doors meeting in the European Parliament.

Love it or hate it, the European Union is enormously influential in all the discussions about the Syrian conflict.
It’s vital, then, that we urge European politicians to take into account the plight of the church in Syria, to ensure the Syrian Christian community will be part of an inclusive future Syrian society and that Christians and other minorities in Syria are represented in a political solution to the crisis.
The Open Doors meeting will raise these issues at the heart of Europe. Please invite your MEPs to it!
We are working with our Open Doors colleagues across Europe to alert MEPs to this meeting. We want to make as big an impact as possible—and you can help! We want every British and Irish MEP to know that their constituents care about what is happening in Syria and the threat to the church in Syria.
Christians in Syria are caught between a rock and a hard place. But their voice will be heard in Brussels next Tuesday.
Invite your MEPs to the 1 October meeting!
Thank you for your faithful campaigning and prayers,
Zoe
Advocacy Team
Open Doors UK & Ireland

P.S. if you live outside the UK and Ireland you can now sign the Save Syria petition.
Sudan

A plea to the President

The atmosphere in Sudan is becoming increasingly tense as President Hassan Omar al-Bashir and his government have made it clear that the country is now a Muslim state and there is no room for Christians.
Last week, Rev. Andudu Adam Elnail, a Sudanese bishop, wrote to President Obama, calling on him to take action to save the lives of those still alive in the country's Nuba Mountains, Blue Nile and Darfur regions. He called for tough actions and reminded world leaders to pay more attention to the war raging inside the country.
He wrote, "Our people feel as though the world has forgotten them. We wonder why you have not acted to end our people's suffering or that of the people of Darfur, who are still suffering and whose plight is getting worse.
"We continue to be bombed from the air daily. Bombs land on farms and schools, churches and mosques, clinics and markets. Innocent civilians, women and children, are killed carrying on their daily lives. Those who survive live in constant fear."
In another strong call for action, a collection of 20 international human rights organisations wrote to the UN Human Rights Council outlining serious human rights violations in Sudan during the past year, urging them to address these during its current session. The letter noted that human rights abuses also included religious freedom violations targeting Christian minorities.
Their letter sought to address cases like that of Moses, who was brought up in a Muslim family but was severely persecuted by them when he chose to become a Christian. Because of Moses' faith, his wife left him, his house was burned to the ground and he was forced out of the community. Eventually, Moses found acceptance as a member of an indigenous church in a new location. He remains adamant that he will remain strong in his faith, despite the cost.
Source: Open Doors
Please Pray:
for the UN Human Rights Council meeting this week, that they will commit to address the human rights issues in Sudan
that God will strengthen the Christians in Sudan as they face increasing state sanctioned pressure, intimidation and persecution
that God will uphold Moses, and other Sudanese Muslim background believers, helping them to be strong in their faith.
With many thanks for your prayers.

PAKISTAN: Suicide Bombers Target Believers
Sources: CNN, Release International, BBC
A double-suicide bombing took place on September 22nd within the compound of the All Saints Church in Peshawar (about 120 kilometres from the country's capital of Islamabad). According to a hospital official, the death toll has risen to 81. Among those killed were choir members and children attending Sunday school. The incident is described as one of the deadliest attacks ever on the Christian community in this country. Two militant groups with links to the Taliban are claiming responsibility for the attack. (For previously posted video clips and reports of persecution in Pakistan, please go to www.persecution.net/pakistan.htm.)
Dr. Arshad Javed, chief executive of Peshawar's Lady Reading Hospital, explained that the attack has also left 120 people wounded, with 10 of them in critical condition. In addition to being traumatized and grief-stricken over the loss of loved ones, many of the surviving victims are experiencing extreme physical pain due to the severity of their burns. The hot, uncomfortable conditions and inadequate number of medical specialists available to them are adding to their suffering.
May the "Prince of Peace" bring comfort and peace to the troubled hearts of these victimized believers whose lives have been shattered by the sudden destruction and tragic loss resulting from this violent attack. Thankfully, God is able to mend the broken pieces, and turn what was meant for evil into something good (Genesis 50:20). Pray that healing and restoration will take place in these believers' lives and church fellowship, and that through this tragedy many others in Pakistan will experience His salvation...including those opposing the Christian faith.

NIGERIA: Twenty-Five Christian Buildings Marked for Demolition
Sources: VOM Contacts, All Africa
Government authorities in northern Nigeria's Borno state plan to demolish 25 churches and schools, ostensibly to make room for new housing. However, no plans for the housing development have been produced. Christian leaders believe this is yet another attempt by local governments in northern Nigeria to persecute the Christian minority. (Other informative reports can be accessed at www.persecution.net/nigeria.htm.)
The proposed demolitions would compound the security challenges that these believers are already facing from the militant group, Boko Haram. "We have seen the eviction notice from the Borno state government," says Dr. Asake, general secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria. "We are Nigerians, and there are other places where the state government can develop. The areas earmarked for demolition are already developed with churches and schools. Christians have already suffered enough in Borno state."
Thank the Lord for the faithfulness of the Christians in Nigeria, asking Him to strengthen their faith further so they will overcome this most recent challenge of governmental opposition. Pray that He will intervene to preserve their places of worship, fellowship and teaching. Through it all, may these Nigerian believers continue to reach out to their Muslim neighbours with the love of Jesus.
IRAN: Recent Release of Two Imprisoned Believers
Source: Christian Solidarity Worldwide
Iranian Christians Maryam Jalili and Mitra Rahmati were released from Evin Prison on September 18th, six weeks before their two-and-half-year sentences were due to be completed. The women were among eleven prisoners of conscience selected for release.
Maryam and Mitra, both converts from Islam, were arrested on Christmas Eve in 2009, along with 13 other believers, after a raid by government officials on a house church in Pakdasht (southeast of Tehran). While most of the other church members were released shortly after being arrested, the two women were detained until March 17th, 2010. After their initial release, they were re-arrested in April of 2011 and imprisoned a second time for being members of an "illegal group." More stories highlighting the heroic faith of Iranian Christians can be found atwww.persecution.net/iran.htm.
During Iran's 2013 presidential campaign, newly elected President Rouhani, viewed as a moderate and pragmatist, promised to uphold the rights of women and religious minorities and permit the release of political prisoners. He also pledged to set up a "civil rights charter" which would ensure equality without discrimination based on race, religion or gender.
While we rejoice with Maryam and Mitra, this update serves as a reminder for us to continue interceding on behalf of fellow Christians in Iran who are still facing tremendous challenges. Pray that the new president will follow through on his promises, bringing about greatly needed change in the way the Iranian government treats those who have been unjustly detained. Please lift up the following incarcerated believers who are among those still awaiting release: Farshid Fathi, Benham Irani, Saeed Abedini and Shahin Lahooti. May the Lord minister ongoing protection, strength and encouragement to them and their families, bringing about ultimate freedom from imprisonment and joyful reconciliation with loved ones.
We encourage you to share your prayers for those who are suffering with other believers around the world by posting on our prayer wall:www.persecution.net/prayer-wall.htm.

THE VALUE OF BIBLE STUDY
by C. R. Stam

"From a child thou hast known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation, through faith which is in Christ Jesus" (II Tim. 3:15).

Timothy was a fortunate young man. His father was not a believer in Christ, but his godly mother made up for this lack as, day after day, from his earliest childhood, she taught him the Word of God. As a result he came to know Christ at an early age and later became St. Paul’s faithful co-worker and close associate in making known the wonderful "good news of the grace of God."

In his very last letter the great Apostle Paul recalls Timothy’s "unfeigned faith... which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice" (II Tim. 1:5).

If only we had more such mothers and grandmothers today, with husbands to help them! If only our American children were not set adrift on a restless sea of human speculation, but were taught the eternal truths of God’s Word, the Bible!

We all need to "know the Holy Scriptures," not only because they teach reverence for God and build moral character, but most of all because they "are able to make [us] wise unto salvation through faith... in Christ Jesus."

The theme of the Bible, the Old Testament as well as New, is the Lord Jesus Christ, the riches of whose saving grace are unfolded to us in the Epistles of Paul, the chief of sinners saved by grace. It was to Paul that God committed the preaching of the cross of Christ. He it is who tells us about the riches that flow from Calvary. He it is who tells us, by divine inspiration that:

"...WE HAVE REDEMPTION THROUGH [CHRIST’S] BLOOD, THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS ACCORDING TO THE RICHES OF HIS GRACE" (Eph. 1:7).

"THAT IN THE AGES TO COME HE MIGHT SHOW THE EXCEEDING RICHES OF HIS GRACE IN HIS KINDNESS TOWARD US THROUGH CHRIST JESUS" (Eph. 2:7).

EGYPT: Two Christians Murdered Over Muslim Poll Tax
Sources: Assyrian International News Agency, Assist News, VOM Contacts, CBN

Two government employees were killed for refusing to pay Jizya, a Muslim poll tax inflicted on Christians by the members of the Muslim Brotherhood. On September 12th, at around 10 a.m., a gang of militant Muslims fired bullets at the house of Emad Damian, 50, who was present in his home at the time of the shooting, along with his cousin Medhat Damian, 37. Both of the deceased men were from the village of Sahel Selim in Assuit Province.
Two days prior to the shooting, Emad received a phone call from Ashraf Ahmed Mohammed Khalajah, a Muslim gang leader and registered criminal. Ashraf demanded 10,000 Egyptian pounds (about $1,450) for weapons, threatening to kill Emad if he did not pay. Although Emad had reported the threat to the police and requested protection, no action was taken. Both of the victims leave behind grieving wives and children.
Numerous Christian activists have spoken out against the Jizya tax which, according to Islamic law, is to be applied to "conquered non-Muslims." Since the ousting of President Mohammed Morsi, Muslim Brotherhood gangs in Egypt have been forcing Christians to pay this tax, allegedly to safeguard them from any violence and vandalism being directed toward their homes and businesses. This is also a major problem in the village of Delga (Minya province) where the "protection" tax charges can range anywhere from 200 to 500 Egyptian pounds daily, exorbitant amounts for many of these villagers. Learn more about the country's political and spiritual climate by reviewing www.persecution.net/egypt.htm.
Pray for the wives and children of Emad and Medhat...that God will greatly comfort them, provide His protection, meet their needs, and take away their deepest fears. Also lift up other suffering believers there in Egypt who are struggling to survive in such a volatile environment. May they remain faithful, trusting for the Lord's protection and provision upon their lives as well. Ask for the Holy Spirit's conviction to take place in the hearts of those who are imposing such harsh demands on His persecuted people, inflicting even more unnecessary hardship on them. This includes Ashraf and his gang who clearly need a divine encounter with the Living God and supernatural deliverance from evil.
Egypt Update: According to recent reports by "The Washington Times" and "The Associated Press," police have arrested the Muslim Brotherhood's main English-speaking spokesman, Gehad el-Haddad, along with other senior members of the group, for inciting violence. Gehad is the son of Essam el-Haddad, a senior foreign policy aide to Mohammed Morsi. The father has reportedly been held in an undisclosed military facility with Mr. Morsi since the coup. Thank you for praying.

LAOS: Laotian Christian Families Facing Expulsion and Abuse
Sources: Asia News, International Christian Concern

Eleven Laotian families, about fifty people in all, face expulsion from Nongdaeng village (Borikan District, central province of Bolikhamsai) because of their conversion to Christianity. On August 30th, village authorities issued an order to family representatives, stating that they must abjure their faith and return to the local traditional religion of animism within three days to avoid expulsion. Despite the impending threat, the Laotian believers plan to continue conducting worship services, insisting that the Laos constitution protects their religious rights.
Problems with the Nongdaeng government began to escalate between April and May of 2013 when three Christian families began hosting worship services in their homes. Eight additional families residing nearby decided to embrace Christianity, increasing the total number of Christian families to eleven. Since the Communists came to power in 1975, and the resulting expulsion of foreign missionaries, the Christian minority in Laos has been subjected to strict governmental controls. Even tighter restrictions have been imposed since 2011, following a violent crackdown against protests led by some groups within the country's Hmong ethnic minority. For previous reports of persecution against Christians in Laos, go towww.persecution.net/laos.htm.
While we can thank the Lord that these Christians are refusing to renounce their faith while facing such intense pressure, ask that He bless and honour them for their relentless courage and devotion to Him. Pray that He will always remain at the centre of their fellowship, filling them with His strength, unfailing love, mercy and the ability to forgive others. In fact, through their strong Christian witness, may those persecuting them recognize the power of God at work in and through their lives. In addition, pray that these Laotian believers be encouraged to continue interceding for their government, so they can live peaceful and quiet lives in godliness and holiness (1 Timothy 2:1-2).

NIGERIA: Fatal Attack Perpetrated by Militant Herdsmen and Soldiers
Sources: Morning Star News, VOM Contacts

During a night raid by militant Muslims in Plateau state, a Christian man and his two teenage sons were tragically killed, and his wife critically wounded. At about 10 p.m. on September 3rd, ethnic Fulani herdsmen and soldiers raided Gura Dabwam village (near Jos in Gyel District), killing the 42-year-old father, Dauda Dalyop, and his two sons: Bitrus, 17, and Daniel, 15. The attack has also left Dauda's wife, Kangyang, 35, in critical condition at the Plateau State Specialist Hospital. Surprisingly, their 5-year-old son Dantong survived the attack unharmed.
Pastor Davou Pam, representing the Church of Christ in Nations, explained that his family had just finished their nightly devotional time when they heard gunshots in the village that night. He recounts the aftermath of the attack and subsequent shock over the tragic loss: "I heard wailings from some houses, and then I went there to find that my church member, Dauda Dalyop, and his two sons were killed, while his wife was injured." Pastor Davou is now seeking ways to care for the wounded widow and her only surviving son. For information on how you can help victims of persecution through the Family of Martyrs Fund, please check www.persecution.net/special-funds.htm. To review past reports, go towww.persecution.net/nigeria.htm.
Pray that God will greatly comfort Kangyang and her young son, Dantong, assuring them of His ability to minister to their every need. May He not only provide protection to them and other Christians residing in Plateau state, but also replace their anxiety with the "peace that surpasses all understanding." Also ask for His wisdom and guidance in the situation so that governing authorities will be able to effectively deal with the attackers. Most important of all, may the Lord use the situation to draw His people into a closer relationship with Him and those in need of salvation to the cross of Calvary.
We invite you to pray with us on behalf of our suffering family of believers around the world by posting on our prayer wall:www.persecution.net/prayer-wall.htm.

Kazakhstan
Imprisoned pastor awaits judge's decision
On 9 September, after a court hearing in Astana, Kazakhstan, the detention of a Kazakh church leader was extended until 17 October, pending the results of a psychiatric examination.
Pastor Bahytzhan Kashkumbayev of the Grace Church, Astana, was arrested in May, accused of harming the mental health of one of his church members. After attending a church meeting, Lyazzat Almenova (34), was taken to a psychiatric hospital and diagnosed with a high risk of paranoid schizophrenia.
Hallucinogenic drink
Police opened a criminal case against Pastor Kashkumbayev in October 2012 on the grounds that, during communion, he was giving his congregation an hallucinogenic drink, causing 'grievous physical harm to members of the congregation'. The drink in question was a red tea which was being used as a non-alcoholic alternative to wine.
Pastor Kashkumbayev has been held in detention since his arrest in May, despite Lyazzat Almenova's written statement to police which said that her health had not been harmed. It is believed that Lyazzat Almenova had had mental and psychological problems over a long period of time, prior to attending Grace Church.
Like many Christians in Kazakhstan, Pastor Bahytzhan is from a Muslim background. One of his church members said recently, "In Kazkhstan, if you are Kazakh, it means that you are a Muslim. And if you're Kazakh and a Christian, then something is wrong with you."
Source: Open Doors
Please Pray:

 • for Pastor Kashkumbayev's physical strength; in August it was reported that he was protesting his innocence through a hunger strike
 • for the judge's decision on 17 October, that the entire process would be fair and impartial, and that any charges would be removed
 • for freedom for Kazakhs to believe in Jesus.

Devotional
Reader, are you a Christian?

(James Smith, "Good seed for the Lord's field!" 1856)
Are you a Christian?
This is a very important inquiry, because many profess to be so — who are not so in reality. And yet no one can be saved — unless he is a Christian.
If anyone is in Christ — he is a new creature:
he is convinced of sin — and mourns over it;
he hates sin — and departs from it;
he reads the Word of God — and loves it;
he hears the gospel of Christ — and believes it.
He becomes a disciple of Christ, . . .
  learning His doctrines,
  trusting His promises,
  and doing His will.
He receives the Spirit of Christ, which is a spirit of meekness, love, and holiness.
He would rather suffer for Christ — than sin against Christ! He . . .
  loves the person of Christ,
imitates the example of Christ, and
  observes the ordinances of Christ.
He commits his soul into the hands of Jesus . . .
to be pardoned through His blood,
to be justified by His righteousness,
to be sanctified by His Spirit,
to be preserved by His power,
to be used for His glory, and
to be presented faultless by Him to the Father at last.
He looks for the second coming of Christ with joy — because then he will be like Him, for he will see Him as He is!
Such is a Christian, according to the New Testament.
Reader, are you a Christian?
Can you live without prayer?
Can you be happy without Christ?
Can you neglect or despise the Word of God?
If so — then you are not a Christian!
Every Christian finds . . .
prayer to be the breath of his soul,
Christ to be the food of his soul,
the Bible to be the comfort of his soul, and
the Lord's people to be the beloved companions of his soul.
Examine yourself, for thousands bear the Christian name — who know nothing of Christian experience. Multitudes live and die under a delusion — and will say to Jesus at last, "Lord, Lord, we were Christians!" Then He will say unto them, "I never knew you! Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels!" This will be dreadful — most dreadful!

EGYPT: Worst Violent Onslaught Against Christians in Centuries
Sources: CBN, Morningstar News, Christian Post

After weeks of rampages by the supporters of the ousted Islamist president, Mohamed Morsi, many Christian properties in Egypt were left in extreme disrepair. The attacks began on August 14th, shortly after Cairo police dispersed two pro-Morsi protest camps. Blaming Christians for requesting the police presence, the protesters fled to neighbouring communities where they spray-painted Christian buildings with black "X" marks. Before emergency crews arrived, most of the marked buildings had been torched.
Some scholars believe this outrageous onslaught of violence represents the greatest attack on Egyptian Christians in 700 years. More than 30 Christian houses were set on fire. At least two Christian schools were attacked. When the Christ Soldiers orphanage was destroyed, about 200 children were left homeless. The assailants also burnt three branches of the Bible Society bookstore. In fact, all businesses having any affiliation with Christians were in jeopardy.
The greatest level of damage, in both severity and scope, was inflicted on churches. More than 60 have been attacked, with varying degrees of damage. One of the most heavily damaged churches, the Amir Tadros church in Minya, was completely gutted. Engineers plan to demolish the building and, if adequate funding is available, hope to rebuild it. The congregation continues to meet at a nearby alcove at 6:30 a.m. when violence is less likely to occur. This is a valid concern considering that at least 500 civilians (along with 43 police officers) have lost their lives and thousands more have been injured. A brief four-minute video clip on this current situation is available at www.persecution.tv/egypt-attacks. For a previous written report, you may go to www.persecution.net/eg-2013-07-18.htm.
In the midst of all the destruction and chaos, may God's peace reign supreme in the hearts of His people. For those who have tragically lost dear loved ones as a result of the vicious attacks, may His comforting presence be a reminder of the eternal promise that lies ahead. May these Egyptian believers continue to trust in God's sovereignty, remain obedient to His teachings, and be granted the grace to respond in a manner of love. Through the unwavering witness of Egypt's Christian community, and the workings of His Holy Spirit, may God work mightily in the country -- also touching the hearts of those committing the violent acts.
We invite you to join others in prayer for our fellow believers in Egypt by posting your prayers on our prayer wall at www.persecution.net/prayerwall.

NIGERIA: Minor Provocation Incites Muslim Mob to Attack Church
Sources: Release International, Morningstar News

Several attendants of a church in Lafia, Nasarawa, were severely injured by a mob of Muslim militants in an attack that was prompted by an altercation over a miniscule amount of money. During the early evening of August 17th, while the choir was rehearsing, Rev. Isaac Onwusongaonye held a Bible study meeting with the elders of St. James Anglican Cathedral. At the time of the meeting, he was informed about a confrontation that took place at the church's water borehole. The confrontation led to a violent assault against the church building and those in it. Reportedly, a Muslim woman in the community had incited neighbouring militants to attack the church after engaging in a minor dispute with a young Christian man who runs the borehole...over the payment of 20 naira, which is equivalent to about one cent (CAD) in change.
Despite the church's attempts to defuse the row by waiving the fee, the woman's son and associates responded with violence. Using knives, clubs, motorcycle chains, iron poles and wooden rods, the angry mob of 30 attacked the church's security guards, causing most of them to be hospitalized. In addition, three pastors, four elders, and an indeterminate number of choir members sustained injuries. Church property was also destroyed. Thankfully, the arrival of police averted plans to burn down the church building. While the ringleader's mother was initially arrested, she was later discharged in exchange for her son. The case is still under investigation. (For more information on persecution in this country, please check www.persecution.net/nigeria.htm.)
Thank the Lord for the courage of the security guards who risked their lives while trying to protect the church. Pray that these guards and others who were wounded during the attack will not succumb to fear, but rather would set their eyes on our Almighty God as their Protector and Deliverer. Ask Him to minister to the traumatized victims, granting them needed comfort and healing. May the Lord encourage and reward the church’s leaders and congregation members, bringing justice in this situation and blessing their outreach in the community.

CHINA: House Church Pastor Attacked by Government Agents
Sources: ChinaAid, Christian Solidarity Worldwide

Li Shuangping, pastor of Linfen house church, was abducted, beaten and threatened by government agents on the night of August 13th. While Li was driving to his home in Shanxi province, a man who appeared to be drunk staggered in front of his vehicle, at which point Li stopped. A black sedan pulled up alongside Li, and three men hurried out. The men forcibly seized Li from his vehicle, with help from the man who pretended to be drunk, and dragged him into the sedan. As one man drove, the other three restrained and harassed him in the backseat. After blindfolding him and tying him with a rope, they beat him for the duration of the journey, inflicting noticeable wounds on his head, neck and torso. The driver strayed from the main roads until reaching a cornfield, where the other men pushed Li out of the sedan.
Throughout the journey, one man repeatedly threatened to kill Li for his involvement in the house church. The threats ranged from being tossed in the river to being forced to drink sulfuric acid. The man also threatened to track down and kidnap Li's family. The abducted pastor believes that the assailants work for the local government which has previously targeted him for his involvement with Linfen church.
In 2009, several hundred police officers raided the church, which regularly holds about 50,000 attendants. Bibles and areas of the building were damaged during the raid, and scores of parishioners were violently attacked. Some of the church leaders travelled to Beijing to file a formal complaint, but they were arrested and detained on the way. Li was released in July of 2011, along with several others. More detainees from Linfen church were released later, but some are still in custody, including Yang Rongli, who is serving a seven-year sentence. Learn more about the challenges facing Christians in China at www.persecution.net/china.htm.
Pray that Pastor Li and all those affected by the church raid will draw closer to the Lord and develop greater fervency in prayer. Ask Him to provide protection for these believers and their families, keeping them at peace and free from the spirit of fear. Also pray that the members of the Linfen house church will continue to gather together in fellowship to the glory of God, reaching multitudes more in China with the Gospel... including Li's abductors.

SOMALIA: Islamic Militants Abduct Christian Mother of Two
Source: Morning Star News, International Christian Concern, Christian Response, Christian Today

Islamic militants suspected to be from Al Shabaab have kidnapped a Christian mother and threatened to attack her husband because of their faith. Three masked men abducted Shamsa Enow Hussein, 28, outside her home in Bulo Marer, Lower Shebelle Region, on August 5th. Her husband, 31-year-old Mohamed Isse Osman, received a text from her that night urging him to evacuate. "Please leave immediately because of what we believe," she said in the text. "They have abused me sexually, saying I am an infidel."
Mohamed has also received anonymous threatening text messages from the kidnappers, including one that read, "Your wife has told us all about your Christian involvement and soon we shall come for you too." Mohamed and his two daughters, aged 3 and 5, have moved to an undisclosed location. A religious leader in the region claims that Osman has had no contact with his wife since her text on August 5th.
Like most Somali Christians, Shamsa and her husband are secretive about their faith. According to one resident of Bulo Marer, locals are aware of Shamsa's abduction but have no idea why it occurred. "What little we knew about (the) family was that they were not very committed to attending the mosque during Ramadan time," he said. Somalis consider themselves Muslim by birth, and regard Islam as a significant part of their cultural identity. Officials estimate that Somalia is close to 100 percent Muslim. Apostasy, or the leaving of Islam, is punishable by death. For more on persecution in Somalia, go to www.persecution.net/somalia.htm.
Pray that God will preserve Shamsa's life, bringing her safely back to her family. May they sense His comforting presence throughout the turmoil. Also remember in your prayers other Somali believers who are fearing for their own safety and that of their loved ones. Ask that the Lord will not only provide His protection but also bless them with boldness as they speak the truth in love.
Pray together with other believers around the world by posting your prayers for Shamsa and her family on our prayer wall atwww.persecution.net/prayerwall.

INDIA: Hindu Militants Attack Woman and Threaten Her Ministering Family
Sources: Asia News, Morning Star News, Christian Post

The mother of a Pentecostal pastor in Rajapark, Jaipur, was brutally attacked by Hindu militants who sought to kill her son and his wife. On August 13th, at 2:30 p.m., 51-year-old Reena Behl answered the door of her son's house to find four men who she says were disguised with helmets, demanding to see her son, Rev. Vishaal Behl, and his wife. When they were told that she was unaware of the couple's whereabouts, they pushed her aside and entered the house, breaking items and threatening to kill the couple. As Reena cried for help, the men pinned her to the floor and beat her. "If you do not convert to Hinduism, we will kill you and cut you to pieces," they told her. The only other person home was her elderly mother-in-law. Neighbours hurried to Reena's defense, at which point the militants fled. Reena was soon hospitalized with a head wound and a fractured hand.
Since the attack against Reena, the Behl family has relocated. As the leader of a prominent Christian ministry, Vishaal has previously been targeted by detractors. "Hindu extremists have threatened to kill Vishaal a number of times in the past because of his faith in Christ," Reena explains. Reverend Behl is the Director of Fire of God Ministries, which includes two churches in Jaipur and one in Amritsar, Punjab state. Fire of God Ministries also oversees evangelistic conferences, a prison ministry and a school program.
A few years before entering the ministry, Vishaal and his wife converted from Hinduism to Christianity. Earlier in their Christian walk, they were persecuted by the rest of the family. Over time, the family's hostility to Christianity diminished. Today Reena applauds the changes she has noticed in her son, and she is impressed by his faithfulness in ministry. Other stories about persecution in India, as well as video links, are available atwww.persecution.net/india.htm.
Pray that God will deliver the Behl family from any further life-threatening attacks to their lives, and that He will mightily strengthen and sustain them. As they continue to put Him first and follow His direction, may the Lord abundantly bless Fire of God Ministries, using it in far greater ways. Ask for complete physical healing for Reena, and for the attackers to experience His transforming love and salvation.

VIETNAM: Praying Christians Brutally Assaulted by Police
Source: Christian Solidarity Worldwide

On July 31st, a group of Christians in Ho Chi Minh City were assaulted by police while gathered in front of the Notre Dame Cathedral for prayer. They were praying for the resolution of land disputes because the government has been trying to confiscate their properties. Police and security personnel forcibly ended the meeting, dragging the Christians onto buses. Those who resisted were brutally beaten. As a result, several had to undergo medical treatment in hospital.
In recent years, prayer vigils and peaceful protests have been held by Christians in response to the unlawful confiscation of land by the government. In June of 2012, authorities in Nghe An Province attempted to confiscate land owned by a church in Quy Chau District. In this situation, the parishioners were violently attacked by a large group which left many with serious cuts and bruises.
The Communist Party of Vietnam enforces strict control of all policy and activity. In particular, the confiscation of land is becoming a serious issue. The government is also using the confiscation to restrict unsanctioned religious activities. (Only government-controlled religious organizations are permitted.)
Unregistered churches in Vietnam face harassment and discrimination (see www.persecution.net/vietnam.htm). Recently, severe famine in the land moved the government to start providing emergency aid to villages. Christian communities in desperate need were discriminated against by the government and left without the necessary provisions, unlike the response that was given to those of non-believers.
Please pray that our fellow believers in Vietnam will experience ongoing spiritual strength and growth as they face these challenging circumstances because of their faith. Also ask that the land disputes threatening their churches and communities will be fairly resolved. May those afflicting and harassing them sense God's powerful touch...resulting in changed hearts and lives.

GUINEA: Wave of Violence Causes Devastating Loss
Source: World Watch Monitor

Judicial authorities in Guinea are investigating a series of violent outbursts that left 95 people dead and 130 wounded. Since the murder of a suspected thief on July 14th in Koulé, a town located 40 kilometres from Nzérékoré (the second largest city of Guinea), angry clashes have ensued between members of Guerzé and Konianké ethnic groups. In the city of Nzérékoré, about five churches, four pastors' homes, and an undetermined number of shops and properties were burned or looted.
The violence has been particularly intense in Beyla city, 150 kilometres northeast of Nzérékoré. Describing the scene, a local priest identified as Father Joseph says, "Almost all the houses and shops belonging to Christians, or people affiliated with Christians, have not escaped the fury of attackers." In Beyla alone, two churches were burned and several buildings were ransacked. Within a Catholic compound, assailants looted and burned the nuns' quarters, the presbytery, and most of the offices.
Similar acts of violence were reported in the neighbouring city of Moribadou, home to workers for the mining giant Rio Tinto, and also in the city of Sinko. About 10 churches were destroyed in that outbreak of violence, which lasted nearly three days. Throughout the region, a number of people are still missing. Churches and local NGOs are trying to reunite families. Some Christian families have found refuge in military camps and surrounding villages.
World Watch Monitor warns that Islamic fundamentalism is increasing in southeastern Guinea. The organization claims that the violence perpetrated in this part of the country has strong religious dimensions. In the nation of 10 million people, 85 percent of the population is Muslim. Christians represent only 4 percent of the overall population.
Pray that God will bring great peace and comfort to the troubled hearts of His children in Guinea, at the same time, drawing them closer to Himself and reassuring them of His unfailing presence. May the displaced members clearly sense His leading as He carefully guides them into safe areas of refuge and reunites them with their missing loved ones. In addition to providing for all of their physical needs, may He bring total restoration and healing to shattered lives, families and communities. This, of course, includes His work of salvation in the hearts of those instigating the violence.

UZBEKISTAN: Authorities Attempt to Stifle Ministry of Children's Camps
Sources: Forum 18 News Service, Assist News

The government officials of Uzbekistan, a country once part of the former Soviet Union before its independence in 1991, is attempting to deprive the registered Baptist Union of the land it owns and uses to run summer camps for children and families. State officials are claiming -- without any apparent legal foundation -- that the land was "illegally" purchased in 2000.
In a separate incident, an unrelated children's camp organized by local Protestants in the Samarkand Region was raided. It is reported that the raid made against 31 participating adults and children included the deployment of 30 regular police officers, 20 members of the riot police squad, and 30 additional officials from the regional tax authorities, fire department, Sanitary-Epidemiological Department, as well as members of the regional administration.
Reportedly, the police officers began brandishing their rubber batons during the raid. They "collected statements from everyone -- even from small children separated from their parents." After over six hours of questioning, and additional raids made on the alleged organizers' homes, it is expected that charges will be brought against six Protestants.
Representatives of the Baptist Union have filed a complaint to the Prosecutor-General, stating that "the future of Uzbekistan cannot be built on the plundering of religious organizations." Other stories of persecution can be found at www.persecution.net/uzbekistan.htm.
Despite the frustrations of having to contend with opposing government officials, may God grant the leaders of these Christian camps much wisdom, patience, and an extra measure of His grace. In fact, may their response to the opposition serve as a strong and vibrant Christian witness to all involved. Our Lord promises in Matthew 16:18 that the gates of Hades will not prevail against the church, and that includes the church in Uzbekistan. As a result of His intervention in both situations, pray that these ministries will be able to move forward boldly... reaching even more people with the Gospel.

EGYPT: Christian Girl Shot After Attending Bible Class
Sources: Morning Star News, Assist News, Fox News

While walking home from a Bible class at her church, a Coptic (Egyptian) Christian girl was recently shot and killed in Cairo by an unidentified gunman. Ten-year-old Jessica Boulous of the Ain Shams section of Cairo was killed during the early evening of August 6th while walking with herSunday school teacher from the church to her home. According to a Middle East correspondent, the teacher turned to buy an item at a market stall only to look back and find Jessica lying motionless in a puddle of blood. A Muslim shopkeeper, who saw the child fall to the ground, quickly ran to her side. He took off his shirt, wrapped it around her motionless body and rushed her to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Jessica's uncle, Nasr Allah Zakaria, said the killing has devastated the family. "I just can't believe she is gone," he says in a state of shock. "She was such a sweet little girl...like a daughter to me." Nasr, who pastors an evangelical church in Egypt, continues by saying that violence against Christians "seems to be normal" in Egypt now.
"Violence or intimidation against Christians has become almost a daily occurrence in most parts of Egypt," adds the previously mentioned correspondent. "In the aftermath of the protests that led to the removal of Mohamed Morsi as president, militant supporters of Morsi have...called for revenge against Christians."
The new wave of attacks has included drive-by shootings, kidnappings, destruction of church buildings and Christian-owned property, and now lethal shootings. Unidentified vandals have painted graffiti on church buildings and Christian-owned homes and businesses declaring, "Egypt is Muslim, not Christian." To view an informative nine-minute video clip addressing the tremendous challenges believers in Egypt are facing, go towww.persecution.tv/egypt1.
Pray that the 'God of all comfort' (2 Corinthians 3:5-7) will minister in a special way to all who hold this precious child dear to their hearts. May He somehow assure them of the fact that she is now completely safe with Him, bringing to their remembrance the promise that they will one day be joyfully reunited with her again. In the meantime, may they sense our prayers and, most of all, God's strength upholding them during this difficult time. Please also pray for other fellow believers in Egypt who need His strength, comfort, safety and encouragement in the midst of the country's political and spiritual battle.
Join us in praying for the loved ones of this young girl by posting your prayers on our prayer wall at www.persecution.net/prayerwall.

PHILIPPINES (Mindanao): Christian Villages Attacked

Two Christian villages in Midsayap, Cotabato, were attacked by the Muslim Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) on 29 July and 31 July. More than 70 armed men attacked the villages, using four boats to reach the villages and to carry away their spoils.

They ransacked the villagers’ homes, taking belongings such as rice, clothing and utensils. The attackers also took all the animals from the village, including goats, pigs and more than 300 ducks.

Reynaldo Aloro, a village leader who ran for help when he saw the armed Muslims, was caught by the attackers and killed.

The villagers now walk to their farms by day and stay at an evacuation centre at night for fear of more attacks. The BIFF continually harass and threaten Christians as part of their campaign for a pure Islamic state.

Source: Voice of the Martyrs USA

Pray the Lord will comfort those who are mourning the loss of life and the loss of property (Matthew 5:4). Pray the Lord’s protection and provision may be granted to them.
Pray for members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, that the Lord would bring many to repentance through the work of His Holy Spirit and the witness of the Christian believers they are persecuting.

IRAN: Believer Sentenced to 10 Years Imprisonment

Christian convert from Islam Mohammad-Hadi Bordbar, known as Mostafa, was sentenced to ten years in prison for being a part of an “anti-security organisation” and “gathering with intent to commit crimes against Iranian national security” on 31 July.

He was arrested on 27 December 2012 in Tehran along with 50 other Iranian Christian converts who were celebrating Christmas in Tehran. He was offered release on bail, however, the title deeds offered were rejected because they were for property in Rasht, where he lives, rather than Tehran where he was arrested. Consequently, he remained in detention.

Mostafa Bordbar was first arrested in 2009 in his hometown of Rasht for converting to Christianity and attending a house church. He was found guilty of apostasy (abandoning Islam), but he was released after posting bail. The apostasy conviction remains on his record.

Mostafa’s lawyer is preparing an appeal.

Sources: Voice of the Martyrs USA, Middle East Concern

Pray the Lord will fill Mostafa’s heart with peace beyond comprehension (Philippians 4:4-7).
Pray the Lord will use him as a witness for the Gospel while in prison.
Pray for Mostafa’s lawyers preparing an appeal; ask God to supply them with wisdom and with words when appearing before authorities (Matthew 10:19).

INDONESIA: Evangelists Jailed for Three Years

The two Christians, known as Kashfi Rasyid and Jalaludin, were convicted despite their lawyer's insistence in court that the trial violated their human rights. Much of the debate in court revolved around whether or not the pair were in fact still Muslims because of their religious background. The men insisted they were Christians.

Five other families associated with the ministry which the men lead were forced to flee for their lives. VOM partner Release International has provided practical support to help them to resettle elsewhere.

Lawyers for the two men say they plan to appeal to a higher court.

Source: Release International

Pray that Kashfi Rasyid and Jalaludin's appeal will be heard quickly and will be successful.
Ask God to sustain them and strengthen their faith during their detention.
Ask God to protect the other members of their ministry.
Pray that God will use them and their witness to draw many others to Him.

SYRIA: Missing Clergymen Reveal Dangers Facing Christians
Source: Morning Star News, Assist News Service

The disappearance of an Italian Jesuit priest on July 29th, following the kidnapping of two other clergymen in April, reflects the dangers Christians are facing in this war-torn country. Rev. Paolo Dall'Oglio, who spent three decades in Syria before the government deported him last year for helping victims of President Bashar al-Assad's military crackdown, re-entered the country in late July. The reverend's disappearance comes three months after the kidnapping of the Greek Orthodox and Syriac Orthodox archbishops of Aleppo.
Paul Yazigi of the Greek Orthodox Church, and Yohanna Ibrahim of the Syriac Orthodox Church, were kidnapped near the village of Kafr Dael onApril 22nd while returning from the Turkish border on a humanitarian relief trip. The abduction happened on the road to Aleppo from the rebel-held Bab al Hawa Province, where gunmen intercepted their vehicle and killed the driver. The fate of both clergymen is still unknown.
According to the United Nations, Syrian Christians have been vulnerable since the beginning of the civil war in 2011 which has left more than 100,000 people dead. Reportedly hundreds of believers have been kidnapped since hostilities began in 2011, and thousands more have fled the country. Many have crossed over into Lebanon or Turkey where they await legal or illegal means to reach Europe and obtain political asylum. To review a previous report on the crisis, go to www.persecution.net/sy-2012-12-06.htm.
Pray that the Lord would be a shield to the multitudes of innocent people who are caught in the cross fire between the forces of good and evil. Ask for His divine protection and strength to be upon all of His faithful servants (including those mentioned above) who are boldly taking a stand for righteousness; mediating on behalf of those being persecuted; serving as His hands, feet and voice by carrying out various humanitarian efforts; and bringing His hope, comfort, encouragement and healing to those who are suffering greatly in this troubled land.

IRAN: Christian Activist Sentenced to Ten Years in Prison
Source: Mohabat News

Mohammad-Hadi (Mostafa) Bordbar, a Christian convert, was recently sentenced to five years in prison for membership in a so-called "anti-security organization" and an additional five years for gathering with intent to commit crimes against Iranian national security. The ruling was delivered to Mostafa's lawyer on July 31st, 2013.
The incident surrounding his arrest took place in December of 2012 during the Christmas holidays. Mostafa and about 50 other Farsi-speaking Christian converts had gathered in a home located in northern Tehran to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and worship together when 15 plain-clothes security officers raided the home and interrogated all those in attendance. The incident also led to the arrest of the Iranian-Armenian pastor, Vruir Avanessian. (For more information, see www.persecution.net/ir-2013-01-17.htm.)
This is the second incident concerning Mostafa. Back in 2009, he was arrested for converting to Christianity and attending a house church. Although he was released after posting bail, the apostasy conviction remained in his criminal record. His lawyer, Shima Ghousheh, a member of the Iranian Human Rights Commission, stated that she is now working on an appeal to submit to the court.
While the Iranian Constitution recognizes the rights of religious minorities, including Christians, the Islamic regime of Iran prosecutes those who convert to Christianity from Islam. Persecution of Iranian Christian converts has been considerably on the rise since 2012. Many pastors and Christian activists have been arrested in recent years and given lengthy prison sentences as the number of Christian converts continues to increase and the network of underground house churches spreads at a rapid rate. To learn more about this, go to www.persecution.net/iran.htm.
While we can be so very thankful for the fact that the underground church in Iran is growing and thriving, the consequences of converting to Christianity are harsh and extreme. Let us pray that the government's new leadership will realize that the intent of Christians is not to undermine the country's national unity but rather to enhance it through the practise of Godly principles and the teachings of Jesus. May imprisoned believers like Mustafa, and spiritual leaders such as Pastor Vruir, be granted favour and ultimately freedom as a result.
We invite you to join fellow believers in praying for those imprisoned for their faith in Iran by posting on our prayer wall atwww.persecution.net/prayerwall.

NIGERIA: Multiple Bomb Explosions Target Nigeria's Christian Population
Source: The Christian Post, Reuters

Multiple explosions hit a highly populated area within the Christian district of Sabon Gari in Kano city at around 9:30 p.m. on July 29th. The military confirmed that 12 people have died at the scene of the blasts and a couple of others were wounded. However, a spokesperson for the local Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital has claimed that more than 20 fatalities took place as a result of the blast.
This same area was previously attacked by the militant Islamic group, Boko Haram, with the intent of totally wiping out Christianity from the region. In May, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in some northeastern areas of the country. The government has since announced its dedication in cracking down on militant Islamists. It was announced by Nigerian authorities on July 30th that 42 suspected members of Boko Haram have been arrested so far. For an overview on the tremendous challenges Christians have been facing in Nigeria, please see this report: www.persecution.net/ng-2013-03-14.htm.
The Lord is clearly hearing our prayers on behalf of our dear fellow believers in Nigeria through the government's willingness to provide greater protection and diligently track down the militants who are causing much loss, upheaval and pain in the lives of so many innocent people. May He continue to give President Goodluck Jonathan and his political team wisdom as they handle the perpetrators and bring assistance to the wounded and bereaved. Also ask for God's peace, comfort and healing to be upon the surviving victims and their loved ones.

Prayer Focus with Keith - Page 2 Empty Re: Prayer Focus with Keith

Welcome to Notes from Nanjing

Thanks for joining us once again as we share with you about our lives in Nanjing.

Today we want to share about where we live.

Please take time to read and listen to the links situated at the bottom of this message.

God bless

Keith and Helen

OUR HOME

We live in the city of Nanjing, which is situated in Jiangsu province in China. It is a city of over 3 million people and is surrounded by hills.. the most famous being Purple mountain.

It was for many centuries the old imperial capital of China and it has a unique and varied history.

We live in the suburbs of this large city, the centre of Nanjing, takes us about 40 minutes by bus.

Our area is called Yao Hua Men and it is almost like a little town, we have everything that you coud ever want here.. supermarkets, banks, fast food outlets (KFC.. yuk!!!!!!), restaurants and parks.

We live just off a very straight road in a complex of  16 blocks of  flats which are between 6-9 storeys high.

Entrance to the complex is through a lift up gate, which is operated by one of the many security guards who patrols the grounds. When I came last year, the gate hit me on the shoulder as I was passing through it, the guard was too quick or I was too slow.. can't decide which.. no damage was done.. either to the gate or to me.

Most of the block of flats have lifts.. ours doesn't.. sighs.. especially when you have to carry something heavy.. but it keeps us fit!!!!. We live on the sixth floor.. the top one of our block and last year as we sat eating dinner, the chairs began to rattle and the building shook, it was an earthquake.. the epi- centre being 200 miles away, but we felt the shocks.. it is was a shock believe me!!!!!

The grounds are very pretty and have lots of trees and plants and also three pagoda type rest areas surrounded by water with live fish in them. The path which leads down to the bottom of the complex has two little bridges and there is a lovely waterfall there, it is ever so beautiful, a real place of peace and solitude.

In our sister complex across the road, there is a small lake, and there are certain ways to get across, you can walk round it or use the two stepping stones causeways that there are.. I have used one and nearly fallen in, whilst trying.

I hope this has given you a flavour of what our home is like.. if you would like a few pictures.. please let me know.

God bless you

Keith Helen Ming

AFRICA: Modern-Day Victims of Forcible Slavery Tortured
Sources: CBN News, Assist News

From the west coast of Africa to the deserts of Sinai, Bedouin tribes are conducting a human trafficking trade on a massive scale. According to CBN News, the trade reaps millions of dollars and deals with human misery. It could be stopped, but so far no one has dared.
"Philip," one Eritrean torture victim, explains how he lost the sensation of his hands: "It was a result of the accumulated torture but mainly because (both) of my wrists were tied up so tightly. (As I was hung) from the ceiling for three days, the blood was cut off from my hands...."
A 35-year-old Eritrean woman named Segen, who is five months pregnant, speaks of her own horrific experience. The news reporter interviewing her said that you could hear the strain in Segen's voice as she recounts what took place: "They are asking for money every minute and they hit us.... They hang us the way (Jesus) was hanged.... "
These are just two examples of this widespread modern-day slavery, kidnapping and torture trade in the Sinai desert. Shahar Shoham, director of Physicians for Human Rights, has documented more than 1,300 cases of torture. And the vile treatment of these victimized refugees is considered diabolical. Thankfully, there are survivors who have eventually made it to Israel. (To learn more about the hardships facing fellow believers in Eritrea, go to www.persecution.net/eritrea.htm.)
In addition, what the Bedouin tribesmen demand from the Eritrean victims' poor families is an unattainable amount. "The ransom fees can go up to $40,000 for an individual and even $50,000," the news report states. "And until the ransom fees (are) paid, the people will not be released." Shahar surmises that "the financial burden on the families is devastating." Many of the captured Etritrean refugees, like Segen and Philip, are Christians. Sadly, many don't survive.
May God mightily intervene on behalf of these Eritrean believers who are going through much tribulation while fleeing persecution in their own troubled country. Ask the Lord to place a hedge of protection around them and their families, keeping them safe from the evil one who roams about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Pray that their perpetrators will experience an encounter with the Living God so they will have the opportunity to turn from their wicked ways...and instead discover the joy of serving Him and His people as instruments of blessing.

PAKISTAN: Christian Women Publically Beaten and Humiliated
Source: Times of India

During the first week of June, a Muslim landlord allegedly forced three Christian women to parade naked in the public streets of Pakistan's Punjab province. It was reported that the women were brutally beaten and then publically humiliated by armed men affiliated with Muhammad Munir, a local landlord of Kasur district (about 50 kilometres from Lahore).
The matter came to light a few days after the Asian Human Rights Commission issued a news release to the media. According to the head of the victimized family, Sadiq Masih, the male members of his family had gone out to their jobs when the attackers entered his house. Muhammad Munir and his armed men disrobed the son's wives and then forcibly paraded them in the streets. As the women screamed for help, some elderly people of the village came to their rescue. The attackers finally let the women go but warned the villagers and the victimized family against reporting the incident to the police.
On July 12th, the Lahore high court ordered the district and sessions judge to probe further into the matter and submit a report. For an overview on Pakistan's political, judicial and spiritual climate, please check www.persecution.net/pakistan.htm.
God's heart is so terribly grieved over the mistreatment of His people, especially those who are most vulnerable. Thank you for sharing His heart of compassion and for being a vital part of His ministry around the world through your prayers. May He console these women who have been exploited and shamed in such an indecent manner, while also bringing necessary correction to those who caused them harm. Pray that the judge and the people of the community will stand on the side of true justice, providing needed support to these Christian women and their families.
We invite you to join us in prayer for these women by posting on our prayer wall at www.persecution.net/prayerwall.

CHINA: Christian Bookstore Raid Leads to Arrests and Imprisonment
Sources: VOM USA, South China Morning Post

A Christian bookstore employee, Wenxi Li, and another man associated with the bookstore, Lacheng Ren, were arrested and sentenced to prison terms for their role in assisting with the opening of a new bookstore. On June 17th, 2013, Wenxi was sentenced to two years in prison by the court of Xiaodian district of Taiyuan in central China.
In 2012, Wenxi travelled from Beijing to Shanxi province to help local Christians there open a new bookstore in the capital city of Taiyuan. While he was working at the Enyu Bookstore, police raided the new business and confiscated hundreds of books that he had brought with him. According to the "South China Morning Post," one security worker allegedly shouted at Wenxi and his colleagues, "Don't you dare bring Christian culture here. This is our turf."
On December 19th, 2012, Wenxi was asked to come to a police station to retrieve the $6,000 worth of books that had been seized. But when he arrived at the police station, he was immediately arrested and sent to prison. Police were quoted as saying Wenxi was denied bail because of the seriousness of his "crime." (Other alerts of persecution in China can be found at www.persecution.net/china.htm.)
Since Wenxi's arrest, his wife Cai Hong and their two children have received harassment from anonymous sources. She has expressed concern for the children's safety. But despite the harassment, the family is proceeding to appeal his case. The good news is that Wenxi has already led three people to Christ while in prison awaiting trial.
It is encouraging to know that God is greater in us than "he that is in the world" (1 John 4:4). The Lord is clearly working in and through the lives of His servants...even in the most challenging of circumstances. We rejoice with the angels in heaven over the salvation of these three newly converted prisoners! May the Lord continue the good work that He has begun in each of their lives. We also want to lift up Wenxi and his precious family, as well as his colleague Lacheng. Pray that these believers will be granted divine protection, favour and even greater opportunities to testify of their faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

IRAN: Imprisoned Pastor Now Receiving Medical Care
Sources: American Center for Law and Justice, Assist News Service

July 23rd marked the 300th day of Pastor Saeed Abedini's imprisonment in Iran. According to Jordan Sekulow of the American Center for Law and Justice, it was nearly a year ago that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard raided the home of Pastor Saeed's parents in Tehran and imprisoned him. During his incarceration, he has been subjected to beatings which have caused internal injuries necessitating medical treatment.
On July 20th, 2013, he was taken to a private hospital in Tehran for treatment. For the first time, he was examined by a physician and prescribed medication for injuries sustained from the beatings he endured at the hands of prison guards. (On two past occasions, the 33-year-old believer had been taken to the local hospital only to be sent home without an examination or treatment for his injuries.)
Pastor Saeed's wife responded favourably to this positive update: "Thank you to all of the individuals who have prayed, written letters, signed petitions, called government officials, run benefit races, tweeted, and shared Saeed's story. Thank you to all the government officials from around the world who have stood for my husband. Iran has listened to your pleas."
While we can rejoice with Saeed's family over this positive turn of events, they still very much need our prayers. Ask that God's presence will continue to minister peace and comfort to Pastor Saeed and his concerned loved ones. May the Lord work out His good plans in each of their lives, using this time of trial to refine, purify, strengthen and ultimately bless them. Of equal importance is His work of salvation in the hearts of the prison guards, fellow prisoners and governmental authorities.

THE GREATEST DANGER
I want to share with you the biggest danger to the church in China and yes the final three letter's are ISM.. but it is not communism.. it is Materialism.

The tactics the devil uses are not new.. he has no new ideas.. it is the same ideas.. with different wrapping on it.

China's church is growing at such a high rate and the devil knows that He cant stop the progress of the church.. but he is seeking to dilute the faith of the believers and especially the young believers.. by using the glitter and glamour of this world.

The church was strongest in the countryside and now many believers have been lured to the cities in search of better jobs.. believe it or not they swap large comfortable houses for small one bedroom houses. Now many of the country side churches which were the engine of church growth are full of old people as most of the young people have left to go to the cities.. in search of a better life.

In the centre of Nanjing, there are shops you only expect to find in the major cities such as New York, Paris and London.. such as Cartier, Louis Vutton and they sell Rolls Royce cars here at 10 million RMB... 1 million pounds.

Many but not all of the young believers have all the gadgets.. I-phones, I-pad's etc etc.. now I am not saying having these things is wrong.. but it can be a weapon that the devil can use against the believer to blunt their effectiveness, when these things can be used for the blessing of people and for the extension.

Materialism is blunting the church in China.. the search for money and things is still the biggest danger to the church, especially to the young and vibrant church in China.

The church in China has been purified through many years through intense persecution, which is still going on. A story I once read about an outgoing Chinese Premier, he was asked what one law would he bring in, he answered that He would make Christianity the Religion of China?

You may say.. oh that's wonderful, but is it? Maybe it would make being a christian easier. The church may lose it's edge, it's vibrancy, it's closeness to God.. amen.

The women in the church outnumber the men in the church by 6 to 1, the men are out seeking money and better jobs, more things.。 Please pray that more men, would be called of God and committed to the local church.

Please pray for this situation, the church in the west, has lost it's vibrancy because it has been choked by the cares of the world. Pray that the church in China, does not lose it's cutting edge.

Please pray that the church in China would not be enticed by Material things. Many times we are told that we have not to focus on getting things, but on serving God.

Please pray that the church would stand strong in spite of persecution.

Please pray that the church would be like Daniel and do great exploits.. that the whole of China.. would be changed by the power of the gospel

Although there are 100 million believers in China, there are 160 million Buddhists and 500 million Non Religious. Please pray the church, would have the necessary vision to reach out to every area of China and beyond. The need is so great.. for us to reach out with the gospel.. amen

EGYPT: Morsi's Supporters Retaliate By Targeting Christians
Sources: Release International, Morning Star News, Reuters

Reports of attacks on Christians began to surface just hours after the Egyptian army announced that it had removed President Morsi from office on July 3rd, along with his Muslim Brotherhood cabinet. Angry over his removal from power, hard-line Muslims have attacked churches and Christian property. Al Eslah Church and St. George's Church in Delgia village of Minya province were attacked, as well as properties owned by Christians in the area. One minister narrowly escaped with his life when rioters set fire to his church. Thankfully, concerned Muslim neighbours hid him from the hostile mob.
Worst hit was Naga Hassan village, west of Luxor. Rioting on July 5th has resulted in the deaths of four believers and the destruction of dozens of homes. Police have reportedly asked Christians in the village to leave their homes until peace is restored. Church leaders in the Cairo area were also told to be on the lookout for cars with certain licence plates, due to the threat of car bombs.
Other Christian targets were attacked in Qena and Marsa Matrouh. The murder of a church leader in northern Sinai on July 6th is also being linked to reprisal attacks by Morsi's supporters. Mina Aboud Sharween was shot dead as he walked in the Masaeed area of El Arish. Since this report, there have been several other incidents of destruction, including the loss of innocent lives. To better understand what fellow believers are facing in Egypt, here is a brief video report on a recent church attack: www.tinyurl.com/eg-13-07-18. (To assist persecuted Christians in this war-ravaged country, you may do so by designating to VOMC's Underground Church Fund at www.persecution.net/special-funds.htm.)
Pray that God will protect and sustain His people in Egypt amid the mounting unrest. May they be reassured by the reality of His presence while weathering this raging political and spiritual storm. Ask that through His mighty intervention, there will be an end to the violence that has engulfed the country and many of its innocent citizens. May a wise solution be granted to help steer the nation to a place of unity and peace.

SYRIA: Offering Hope in the Midst of Civil War
Sourc: VOM Sources

Fortunately, there are Christians in Syria who can remain hopeful despite the increasingly difficult circumstances, a VOM contact reports. Syrians are still facing continual threats from snipers and mortars. During the month of June, dozens of mortars fell around the building where our ministry representative lives. He further explains that many destitute people are left begging, searching in the rubbish and seeking for a place to stay. Compounding this dire situation, the value of the Syrian pound continues to drop. (For past country reports, check www.persecution.net/syria.htm.)
Yet, in the midst of these difficulties, our dedicated worker also has some good news to share.... Fellow Christians in Syria are being offered needed help and hope. His church is still holding Bible studies, youth meetings, prayer meetings, medical clinics and Sunday church services. In addition, this VOM-supported ministry work is distributing packages of food staples, as well as basic hygiene products.
While we can be thankful for the compassionate response of caring believers in this part of the world, and the faithfulness of those serving on the front lines there in Syria, as members of God's global family, we all need to unite our hearts together in fervent prayer. This includes interceding for the country's political leaders and citizens. Please pray that many more Syrians will come to Christ, and that the previously mentioned church will continue to be a catalyst of God's transforming work in lives while serving as a centre for peace in the midst of chaos. The Bible reminds us that "...everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved" (Acts 2:21).

RECENT PRISONER UPDATE
PAKISTAN: Young Christian Teen Provided Safe Refuge in Canada
Sources: Assist News, World Magazine

Rimsha Masih, the young Christian girl who fled Pakistan with her family after a Muslim cleric falsely accused her of burning pages from the Quran, has been provided refuge here in Canada. Although Rimsha was acquitted, those accused of blasphemy in Pakistan are often subject to vigilante justice. "World Magazine" reporter Rachel Aldrich explains that "mobs have been known to attack and kill people accused of blasphemy, and two prominent politicians who had discussed changes to the blasphemy laws have been killed." (More about the challenges facing believers in Pakistan can be found at www.persecution.net/pakistan.htm.)
A Muslim cleric who lobbied for her release, Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi, said Rimsha had been facing threats and was moving constantly. "I am sad that this innocent girl had to leave Pakistan," he explains. "She had been acquitted by the court, and despite that it was not possible for her to live freely."
This case has received widespread attention in part because of Rimsha's young age and questions about her mental capabilities. Although an official medical report at the time put her age at 14, some of her supporters say she was as young as 11. Canada's immigration officials were instructed to process her family's applications for permanent residency under humanitarian and compassionate grounds. For more on Rimsha's case, check www.persecution.net/pk-2012-08-23.htm.
Please pray for God's continued protection upon Rimsha, and also for the safety of all who have provided her necessary assistance. It has been stated by Christian leaders that Canada is a place of 'healing for the nations.' May this be especially true for Rimsha and her family as they take up residency here. And contrary to the teen's past experience of unjust imprisonment, may her future be bright and full of hope (Jeremiah 29:11).
We invite you to join us in prayer for Rimsha by posting on our prayer wall, which can be found at www.persecution.net/prayerwall.

BELARUS: Praying in Homeless Shelter a Crime
Source: Forum18

A young Catholic layman, who turned his home into a shelter for homeless people with a prayer room, is being accused of leading an unregistered religious organization. Aleksei Shchedrov, who says he has helped about 100 local people since December 2011, is being investigated on criminal charges under Article 193-1. As a result, he now faces a maximum possible sentence of two years' imprisonment. (To learn of other cases of persecution, go to this country report: www.persecution.net/belarus.htm.)
The criminal investigation against 28-year-old Aleksei followed police raids on the shelter in February and April of this year. "I am a Christian and I started to help those who are in need," he explains while being interviewed in the village of Aleksandrovka, Grodno Region. "I give them food, a bed, a bath and clothes, and I pray together with them. But this is no religious organization, just charity." A priest used to visit the shelter, but stopped after the authorities pressured the Bishop of Grodno into ordering the visits to stop.
May the Lord bless Aleksei for extending heartfelt compassion toward Belarus' homeless people, and may the wonderful work of this ministry continue to meet their practical and spiritual needs. God's Word strongly warns that He will contend with those who contend with His people (Isaiah 40:25). Pray that the reverential fear of the Lord, which is the beginning of wisdom, will come upon those who are standing in opposition by obstructing His work. As a result, instead of hindering this important charitable outreach, may they become its greatest supporters. (You can share your prayers through our prayer wall at www.persecution.net/prayerwall.)

LAOS: Couple Evicted From Home and Forced Out of Community
Source: VOM Sources

Two Christian converts have been evicted from their home after requesting prayer for healing, a VOM worker reports. On January 10th, 2013, Mr. Sakien and his wife, Dong, went to a church in Intee village, Attapeu province, seeking physical healing after their son and daughter-in-law told them that they had experienced God's healing as a result of prayer.
Shortly after visiting the church where they received prayer, the couple embraced the Christian faith. Then, on January 23rd, the village chief issued an eviction order, stating that the couple would be denied residency in the village because of their conversion to Christianity. Sakien and Dong were told to "find a different place where Christians can live." Sakien is very ill, and the couple are currently taking shelter in an unfinished church building in Intee village. (For previous reports on the challenges facing Christians in Laos, check www.persecution.net/laos.htm.)
Pray that this older couple will be encouraged in God's ability to provide for their every need, including that of appropriate accommodation. In fact, may He wonderfully bless them with His goodness by leading them to a safe haven in which to live and a loving community that will welcome them with open arms (Philippians 4:19). Also ask the Lord to bring needed strength and healing to Sakien, and encouragement and support to his dear wife Dong and their family.

HONDURAS: Violence Threatens Pastors' Lives
Sources: Fuerza Latina Cristiana, VOM Sources

Eight pastors have been murdered in Honduras in 2013 alone. In the most recent attack, which took place on June 19th, Pastor Eduardo Mejia was stabbed to death. Pastor Mejia led a church called "God Is Love." The other seven pastors killed over the first half of this year have all died from gunshot wounds.
An estimated 600,000 illegal weapons circulate in Honduras, and most are owned by criminals. According to data released by human rights organizations, Honduras has one of the highest murder rates in the world...about 85 per every 100,000 people. To date, none of the cases involving the murdered pastors has been solved.
While we know these servants of the Living God will be the recipients of His promised eternal reward for their faithfulness in ministry service, let us pray that this truth and the reassuring presence of Jesus will greatly comfort the hearts of their grieving loved ones and congregation members. According to Psalm 34:18, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted...." We are also mindful of our need to pray for the salvation of the perpetrators who are serving the enemy as 'workers of iniquity' by taking these pastors' lives. May they one day be able to personally experience God's mercy, forgiveness of sin, and His greatest gift of grace which is salvation.

RECENT PRISONER UPDATE

IRAN: Pastor of Tehran Church Released
Sources: Mohabat News, Assist News

One of the leaders of the forcibly closed Central Assemblies of God Church in Tehran has been recently released from prison after spending 43 days in custody. According to Mohabat News, Pastor Robert Asserian, who was arrested by security authorities in the middle of a worship service on May 21st, was released on July 2nd. (To review the report about his arrest, please go to www.persecution.net/ir-2013-05-30.htm.)
The country's newly elected president, Hassan Rouhani, has promised in his second statement that he will preserve the rights of religious and ethnic minorities and respond to their legitimate demands. According to a Mohabat News representative, his statement leads to some very important questions: "Does (Rouhani) count Muslims who have converted to Christianity as religious minorities and thus include them in his promises? What is his view on the recently closed Farsi-speaking churches, and what will he do to re-open them?" Time will tell, as events unfold, exactly what the new president's policy is concerning these issues of great concern. Thank you for your continued prayers on behalf of fellow believers in Iran.

Prayer Focus with Keith - Page 2 Empty Re: Prayer Focus with Keith

Post  Admin Thu 11 Jul 2013, 9:59 pm

Welcome to News from China

Today I am going to share about our engagement, it is one year since Helen and I became engaged.. 11th July 2012.

I hope you enjoy the story

If you no longwer want to receive the devotions or updates.. please send an e-mail with the words unsubscribe me in the title.. we  will be sorry to lose you but fully understand whatever reasons you may have for leaving

God bless you

Keith and Helen

OUR ENGAGEMENT

I have told you about my flight to China, to meet up with my then girlfriend Helen. I flew to China to ask her to marry me and this had three stages.

The first one was to meet Helen's family.. her Mother and Father are so lovely.. her father speaks pretty good English.. but I asked him in Chinese and after some consultation with Mama.. they graciously agreed. This happened at a restaurant opposite Lovers Park.

The second stage was to go and buy the ring, so we went downtown and found a very beautiful one.. Helen loved it straight away and so I was happy as well.

So on Wednesday 11th July at about 11am, I asked Helen to come down to the far end of our complex, where there is a covered platform with seating, surrounded by plants and there I got down on one knee and asked Helen to marry me.. and I did it in Chinese!!!!, but also did it later in English. Helen's answer was .. well have you guessed it yet?

Our day hadn't finished as later that evening, we went out for a meal, it was unusual as nearly all the restaurant workers gathered round our table, seeing a foreigner was something many of them hadn't seen before.. I must of looked like an alien.. to them!

11th July will always be special to me, a wonderful day. Even now one year later, my beautiful Helen is still so precious to me, I love her with my whole heart.

God bless you

Keith

EGYPT: Political Protests of Disgruntled Citizens
Sources: BBC, International Christian Concern, Assist News

Millions of Egyptians have been protesting on the streets of Tahrir Square in Egypt, demanding that Islamist President Mohammed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood government step down. They are angered over his increasingly clear Islamist agenda and economic mismanagement. Morsi had warned that he would use the military against the crowds to restore order if he was threatened. However, the military turned against Morsi on July 3rd, suspending the constitution and removing Morsi from power. The military leadership is promising new elections soon.
A major problem under the Muslim Brotherhood government of Morsi had been the imposition of Sharia law, resulting in an increasingly hostile environment for Christians over the past year. For more about this situation, go to www.persecution.net/eg-2013-03-14.htm.
Please take a moment to pray fervently for Egypt. Ask the Lord to bring about democracy so that the Christians, secularists and moderate Muslims can live in safety and peace within their communities. May there be an end to the bloodshed and suffering of innocent people, including the abduction of Christian girls for the purpose of forceful marriage and conversion. "The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles" (Psalm 34:17).

MALAYSIA: Officials Seek to Legalize Forced Conversion
Source: Religious Liberty Prayer Bulletin

In April of 2013, an estranged husband, who converted from Hinduism to Islam in prison, secretly took his two children (aged 5 and 8) to an Islamic Centre where they were officially converted to Islam and given Islamic names. When their Hindu mother sought redress, she was told that because her children were now Muslims, she would have to go through the Sharia courts. Believing that to be futile and possibly even dangerous, she opted instead to lodge a complaint with the police in early June. This case triggered an outcry when it was exposed in the media.
On Wednesday, June 26th, a bill permitting the unilateral conversion of minors to Islam went to the Parliament without first going to the Cabinet as is the customary procedure. If passed, this bill will further Islamize Malaysian law. (For an historical overview of this country, checkwww.persecution.net/malaysia.htm.) It will also legalize the forced conversion of non-Muslim children. Despite the fact that the bill has caused an outcry, particularly amongst Malaysia's non-Muslims, the government is standing firm. For the sake of vulnerable children, we must pray against this bill.
Please pray that the Spirit of the Lord will arouse passionate indignation in all Malaysians who treasure personal liberty and the fundamental human rights of children so this bill will not pass, thus providing necessary protection of the country's children. May the Malaysian Church look to the 'Lord of Hosts' for wisdom and strength as they face this fierce spiritual battle. Pray that our faithful Lord will establish justice for the children and their parents whose rights have been severely threatened. "Let the little children come to Me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the Kingdom of Heaven" (Matthew 19:14 ESV).

SRI LANKA: Violent Assault Perpetrated Against Church
Source: Release International

A Christian pastor and his congregation in Sri Lanka were violently assaulted by a Buddhist monk and his associates during a Sunday service on June 23rd. The sustained attack began shortly before 10 a.m. as the unsuspecting pastor went on an errand, a short distance from his New Life Church in Neluwaththuduwa, within the district of Colombo.
As the monk began to insult and attack the pastor with a tree branch, the pastor fled to his church -- only to be ambushed by 20 young men who beat him and accused him of attacking the monk. The mob then raided the church where a service was being held, and began attacking the congregation of about 70 members, including the pastor's two sons (aged 19 and three). Other members of the congregation managed to shield the pastor's wife from blows with a wooden club.
When police arrived to disperse the mob, five Christians, including the pastor, were taken to a local police station for interview, along with the monk and some of the other assailants. The pastor was able to register a case against his attackers. This attack took place just a week after a violent mob armed with clubs, knives and swords attacked a Methodist congregation in Valachchennai. For previous reports of persecution, go towww.persecution.net/srilanka.htm.
Pray that the governing authorities of Sri Lanka, including the police, will act swiftly and decisively to curb this anti-Christian violence. Ultimately, may God's peace, protection and blessings be upon the pastor, his family, the New Life Church congregation, and also the members of the Methodist congregation, as they continue to reach out to others in their communities (including their enemies) with His redeeming love.

IRAQ: Gunmen Open Fire on Assyrian Church
Sources: Assist News Service, Assyrian International News Agency

Gunmen opened fire on St. Mary Assyrian Church on the morning of June 25th, wounding two security guards. According to a source in the interior ministry, the gunmen were travelling in a civilian car when they fired a barrage of bullets at the church, which is located in the Ameen Thania neighbourhood of eastern Baghdad. The two wounded guards were taken to Al Kindi hospital where one of them is listed in serious condition.
According to the Assyrian International News Agency, a total of 73 churches have been attacked or bombed since June 2004. Of this total, 45 of the churches attacked were in Baghdad, 19 in Mosul, eight in Kirkuk and one in Ramadi. The initial bombing took place on June 26th, 2004, marking the beginning of what the news agency refers to as a low-grade genocide on the Assyrians of Iraq. Since then, the population of Assyrians in the country has dropped to less than half (from 1.4 million to 600,000), as masses have sought refuge in Syria, Jordan and Turkey. Learn more by going to www.persecution.net/iraq.htm.
Thankfully, our God of righteousness is on the side of those who are oppressed, treated unjustly, rejected and persecuted. He promises to be especially near to the brokenhearted, providing them much needed comfort, encouragement and help, also working through the compassionate response and prayers of those who share His heart. Please pray for the Lord's healing to be manifested in the lives of both wounded guards, and all others who have been affected by the series of church attacks. May He mightily intervene on behalf of His people, providing them protection, deliverance, justice and the reassurance of His abiding presence.

RECENT PRISONER UPDATES
Source: Release International
Kazakhstan - The imprisonment of Kazakh pastor, Bakhytzhan Kashkumbaev, took place in May of this year. It is believed that his arrest was part of the Kazakh government's efforts to effectively restrict the freedom of churches in Kazakhstan and, in particular, penalize any Muslims who convert to Christianity. Pray that God will sustain Pastor Kashkumbaev during his detention and that all charges against him will be dropped.
Pakistan - Recent reports confirm that Asia Bibi, who is awaiting her appeal against a death sentence for "blasphemy," has now been transferred to the Central Jail Multan. The prison administration has not given any reasons for the move, which has caused Asia's family concern for her safety and for her emotional and physical health. Asia’s husband said that she is upset and frightened. Please continue praying for the release of this imprisoned Christian wife and mother. (For more details on her case, check www.persecution.net/pk-2012-01-19.htm.)

INDIA: Christian Beheaded for Refusing to Renounce Faith
Sources: WEA Religious Liberty Commission, Evangelical Fellowship of India News
It is reported that a Christian man was beheaded in Teliamura town, West Tripura, India, on May 25th for refusing to renounce Christ. According to reports, Tapas Bin, 35, had been under heavy pressure from his father-in-law to abandon Christianity. According to police, Tapas married Jentuly, the daughter of 55-year-old Gobinda Jamatiya, three years ago. Prior to this, the Christian man had been a private tutor of Gobinda's daughter.
Since the marriage, Gobinda had been pressuring Tapas to abandon Christianity and join his tribal religion. When Tapas persistently refused, Gobinda decided to kill his son-in-law with the help of a shaman, Krishnapada Jamatiya (no relation). Police arrested the 42-year-old shaman but were unable to find Gobinda who works at the West Tripura Science and Technology Department and is thought to be on the run.
Jentuly, now the widowed mother of a one-year-old child, told police that her father did not recognize their marriage and had pressured Tapas to convert. What is more, "My father might kill me and my son too," she fearfully admits. Commenting on the incident, an area church leader states, "Christians in Teliamura are facing discrimination and problems because of their faith in Christ. We have ceased all kinds of Christian activities in the area." For past reports of persecution, go to
www.persecution.net/india.htm.
Pray for God's protection over Jentuly and her infant son, as well as all Christians living in the town of Teliamura. May Tapas' grieving family and friends experience the comforting presence of Jesus during this difficult time. Please also intercede for the perpetrators of this heinous crime...that they would sincerely repent, turn from their wicked ways, and come to know the saving grace of our Lord Jesus.

NORTH KOREA: Christian Humanitarian Sentenced for "Hostile Acts"
Sources: World Affairs Journal, Assist News Service
North Korea has found U.S. citizen Kenneth Bae guilty for "hostile acts" against the state, sentencing him to 15 years of hard labour. The verdict was handed down on April 30th. A press release from North Korea's "Korean Central News Agency" reported on May 15th that he has now begun serving his sentence within a "special prison."
Kenneth, described as a devout Christian, is the owner of a North Korea tour company. He was in the country with official permission when detained by North Korean authorities on November 3rd. Human rights activist Rev. Robert Park says one thing is certain. "Bae, a humanitarian who had compassion for North Korea's starving and abandoned orphans, is not indictable for any crime. Rather, he is a hostage being held to accommodate yet undetermined North Korean agenda."
The concerned activist further explains that this case is reminiscent of the still unresolved case of a Christian minister and humanitarian, Rev. Kim Dong-shik, who died in a North Korean prison. In 2000, North Korean agents crossed the border and hunted Kim down in China where he was operating several underground shelters for North Korean refugees. He was abducted and returned to North Korea where he was reportedly tortured and starved to death.
A 2011 report from the U.S. Committee for Human Rights in North Korea discovered that the country has abducted more than 180,000 people from 12 countries. Apart from North Korea's own citizens, Rev. Park said no nation and people have suffered more as a result of the savagery...than the Republic of Korea (South Korea). Apart from the abductions, murders and terrorist attacks, he believes North Korea continues to be the world's worst proliferator of nuclear weapons technology, also committing crimes against humanity and genocide against its own people. To learn how you can join us in reaching out to the citizens of North Korea with the Good News of the Gospel, please check
www.persecution.net/kp-2012-08-09.htm.
We can stand in the gap by interceding on behalf of Christians who, like Kenneth Bae and the late Rev. Kim Dong-shik, have been targeted by North Korea's regime of totalitarianism for doing what is noble and upright...for extending compassion toward abandoned orphans and refugees. Great is their reward in heaven! In the meantime, let's pray for the protection of Kenneth and numerous other believers who are suffering great injustice and mistreatment merely for being followers of Jesus. Also remember to lift up their loved ones and those who are advocating on their behalf. (We invite you to express your prayers for these suffering believers at our prayer wall
www.persecution.net/prayerwall.)

PAKISTAN: Christian Teenager Dies in Police Custody
Source: Release International
Thousands of Christians in Punjab had recently taken to the streets in protest at the alleged torture and murder of a teenager who was held in police custody. Eighteen-year-old Adnan Masih died at Sharaqpur Sharif city police station in the district of Sheikhupura on June 10th, after being detained for six days. More than 4,000 Christians staged road blocks on the day of his death, demanding justice and the immediate arrest of the police involved. Three police officers have since been arrested.
Adnan, a fridge and air-conditioning mechanic who worked in nearby Lahore, was arrested on June 4th over the alleged kidnapping of a young Muslim woman. His family say he did not even know the woman and was entirely innocent. They also state that Adnan was brutally tortured during the six days of his detainment and then killed. The police are reportedly claiming that Adnan committed suicide.
The Centre for Legal Aid Assistance and Settlement (CLAAS) was summoned by villagers to help them register a case with police against Adnan's alleged attackers. They believe that Adnan was targeted because of his faith as other non-Christian suspects were released within a day. Learn more about the challenges of believers in Pakistan by going to
www.persecution.net/pakistan.htm.
May God greatly comfort Adnan's family, giving them the strength they need to pursue justice on his behalf. Pray for divine protection over the representatives of CLAAS, and for Adnan's family, as they seek to obtain justice. Also ask that the Lord will provide wisdom for all concerned, and that the laws in Pakistan will serve to protect innocent citizens...including those of religious minorities.
RECENT PRISONER UPDATE
EGYPT: Teacher Convicted of Defaming Islam Receives Massive Fine
Sources: Middle East Concern, Release International, Morning Star News
On June 11th, an Egyptian court convicted Christian teacher "Demiana" of defaming Islam, handing her a massive fine of 100,000 Egyptian pounds (an equivalent of about $14,270 CAN).
The elementary school teacher was falsely charged of defaming Islam after three students and their parents complained to the school administration that she had made a blasphemous gesture while teaching. After two independent investigations were conducted, both found no basis for the complaint. Ten of the 13 interviewed pupils stated that the accusations were false. However, lawyers representing the parents of one student went to the prosecutor's office and filed a complaint. This has resulted in Demiana's detainment on May 9th (though on May 13th she was released on bail), three court hearings, in addition to the heavy fine. To review the previously posted report, please click on
www.persecution.net/eg-2013-06-06.htm.
Before losing her position in wake of the accusations brought against her, Demiana earned about $300 CAN a month. It is believed that the fine is far beyond her ability to pay. However, human rights activist Mohammed Noubi was surprised that the guilty verdict did not send her to prison, despite the clamour militant Muslims created in the courtroom that put intense pressure on the judge. "I personally was expecting a prison sentence, but thank God she was only given a fine," he concludes. While Demiana's lawyers plan to appeal, human rights activists believe the accusations against her reflect a growing trend in Egypt of disproportionate use of the nation's blasphemy statutes against members of the country's Christian minority. Learn more about the situation in Egypt by checking VOM's country report:
www.persecution.net/egypt.htm.
Pray that Demiana will not fear but trust explicitly in the LORD during this time of trouble, relying on the Holy Spirit to help her respond appropriately to the situation. Ask the Lord to bring vindication so she will be cleared of the accusations and able to recover from the financial and emotional duress experienced as a result. In addition, may she eventually be in a position where she can safely resume her calling to teach school children.

Welcome to News from China

We need prayer for a wide range of things and wish to thank you for praying for us and standing with us.

Please listen to sermon a the bottom and click on the link to the persecuted church.

God bless you

Keith Helen Ming

JUNE PRAYER REQUESTS

Personal

Pray for Ming, she is taking the TOFEL English course, at a tutor centre in Downtown Nanjing. Please pray as this course is very intensive. It started this Friday and lasts for six weeks.

The reason Ming is taking the course, is because we are looking to send her to a christian school/university in America. We have made contact with several, but the choice and information are overwhelmingly. Please pray for us as we need such incredible wisdom. This is a decision that is so crucial to both us and especially Ming. If you know of any then please let us know.

Pray that if we are able to send Ming to America, that all we need will be provided, it is expensive, but we have the One who is able to provide all our needs.. AMEN.

Please pray for Helen , She has a little soreness in her leg.. please pray for healing.

Please pray as people have prophesied that Helen would be pregnant, we are still believing God for the fulfillment.

Pray for our teaching.. for patience for Helen as she teaches English. I am no longer teaching the teenagers on Saturday morning.. but still have several teaching commitments with other kids. Please pray as we decide if we want to teach during the summer. Continue to pray that our teaching would go from strength to strength.. with me we are praying for 6 children three times per week.

Please pray for my static caravan to be sold, we are believing it will be sold. Please pray that it will be.

Spiritual

Please pray that we would both remain close to God, we wake up for prayer at 5.30am on Tuesday's, but sometimes we don't other mornings. Please pray for a closeness to God in prayer and complete obedience to God's word.

Please pray for Ming, that she would come to totally trust Christ for herself. She is awesome and although she made a commitment to Christ at age 5, she has backslid a little. Pray that her heart will be warmed by the Spirit of God.

Pray for both our families, who are unsaved. Pray that the Spirit of God would move and touch these precious people.

Please pray for opportunities to share the gospel Here in Nanjing.

Pray for Revival.. in our hearts and yours.. Revival starts with You and I.. not with someone else.

Church

For our beloved Pastors.. Pastors Ji/Pung at Family Church in Nanjing and to Richard/Esther Scholes in Morecambe. Please pray especially for Richard's back and as they move into a new building.

Welcome dear friends

Thanks for praying for us.. we certainly need it. God will hear and answer the prayers you are praying for us

God bless you

Keith Helen Ming

Prayer needs

Please pray for Helen, her job is very demanding. She has to cycle 2 miles there and back every day. Her working conditions are not brilliant.. but adequate. We both have a good witness to the pupils and teachers as we helped clear the snow with them last week. The headmaster and teachers came to the wedding and heard the gospel. Pray for Helen as she shines for Jesus in this place.. there is no other believer in the school. The school is one of three and is reserved for the poorest children..and only teaches 3 subjects. I was down there yesterday and these precious children took me to their hearts.. they are so cute.

Please pray for Helen, she has pain in her left arm. Pray for permanent healing. Helen has 26 lessons at her school, please pray that her more teachers will be sent to share her workload. At her last school, Helen taught Science, pray that this new school would allow her to teach science or bring new teachers to her school to assist her.

Please pray that our home life would be an example of God's beauty to everyone who enters it.. our lives at home must be better even than our lives at church

Please pray for Helen as she leads her Church, she has to wear many hats so to speak. Please pray for a fresh move of the Spirit. Both of us seek to get up at 5am to pray.. we don't always manage it, but we manage it more times than not. Pray for us as leaders that we would be an example to the believers especially in our marriage. Pray that new co-workers will be called to serve. We need more co-workers within the church to share the burden.

Please pray for Ming, our wonderful daughter, she is an absolute joy. She has he most important exams of her young life on the 16-17 th March, so we ask you all to pray earnestly for her on those days. She loves to paint and sketch, and wants to make a career of it. Please pray she gets the required grades to go to Art College. She loves to play the Piano.. suddenly she will just start singing and playing and it is such a joy. Although Ming said a prayer to trust Jesus at a young age, she needs to experience God in a real way, please pray that she would trust God fully for salvation and for her future.

Please pray as we are actively seeking to have a baby of our own.. it would be the icing on our cake so to speak. But we realise that this is in the gifting Of God. If God gives us a baby.. bless his Name.. if not .. Blessed by the Name of the Lord. Please pray for preacher Z and His wife C who are expecting a child.

Please pray for my Church back in the UK.. Home church and my beloved Pastor Richard (who has ruptured a disc in his back.. please pray for healing).. also my dear former Pastor Mark who is recovering from his knee operation.. get well soon brothers.

Please pray for Pastor Ji & Pung as they lead family church in Nanjing

Please pray for both our families who remained unsaved and without the Saviour.

One of our wishes is to go to Seminary/bible school in future years. Please pray that in time God would open up this opportunity. Teachers can retire at 50 in other areas of Nanjing. Please pray that Helen would be able to do like wise

Please pray God would bless our witness.. we have many opportunities.

I will be teaching English on every Saturday morning between 9-11am along with a Chinese friend called C, she has got us 8 students. Please pray for her and her husband S, who are having marriage problems.

Please pray for our dear friend's Samuel, Brother W, Brother Y, Sister L, Sister C , Preacher Z,Sister J, Sister C and Brother J

Please pray that my static caravan would sell in the UK or that we would be able to rent it.

Thank you for all your prayers

God bless you

Welcome to News From China

As you may or may not know, it is Chinese New year, and so China shuts down so to speak as people take a break to be with their families. Helen and I wish to share what we have been doing.

Please share these updates and if you wish to receive them direct.. e-mail me atfaithhopelovefellowship@ hotmail.com

Keith and Helen

Rise and shine at 5.30am

When we first got married, we woke at 6am for prayer and reading bible, but recently, we became very slack in this area, mainly due to me (Keith) liking the comfort of a warm bed. But what happened when we became slack, we got severe coughs and colds and spent the best part of January not that well.

So we decided to get up early, it was just myself, Helen and our friend Samuel at the start, we met outside, but due to bad weather, we have moved inside to the church. Helen is great as she stirs me to get up.. she says we must fight especially with prayer early in the morning. It sure isn't easy.

Over Chinese new year, we have continued to do this and yes it is difficult, but it is truly worth the effort. We are going to continue to pray early in the morning, as we both think it is so very important. Many of you are already praying early in the morning.. if you aren't we would encourage you to start.. it is the best time

Last week, we met a sister in the Lord, who with her husband prays all night for one night every month, she said ' that they see the glory of the Lord'.. enough said.. no wonder, you spend enough time with God like Moses, you will see HIS GLORY

As you may know last Sunday was Chinese new year and this meant fireworks and lots of them.. more next time about this.. but we had to get up at 5.30am last Sunday morning as people insisted on setting off the loudest fireworks you could imagine.

Well that's all from China for the moment

God bless you all

Keith and Helen

Prayer Focus with Keith - Page 2 Empty Re: Prayer Focus with Keith

Welcome to China Cry once again

This week I want to share about the man, both I and the Chinese church revere. Please take time to check out the links at the bottom

God bless

Keith and Helen

MY HUMAN HERO

Many of you know I am British and some of you know that I come from the biggest (and best) county in England.. Yorkshire. I want to talk about a fellow yorkshireman, JHT.. or James Hudson Taylor, who founded the China Inland Mission, who are now the Overseas Missionary fellowship.

One of his quotes

Christ is either Lord of all,
or He is not Lord at all.

We are showered with Christian books from celebrity christian authors and indeed celebrity pastors.. who tell their readers their formula for living the Christian life.. they talk of your best life now, but Hudson Taylor had the EXCHANGED LIFE.

Let me tell you of the connection I have with this man..just after I came to faith back in 1975, I read his biography, 500 pages long, sometimes with the light of a torch under my blankets, the story challenged me, entranced me and made me even more fascinated by China, than I already was.

Here is a man who lived as close to God as you possibly could live, who trusted God totally and who served God faithfully, but the principles he practised have been washed away in the rush of so called Christian books by authors who know nothing of true Christianity. These authors write from spacious heated studies with plush carpets and from beside heated swimming pools, and then tell their readers to trust God for everything. He wrote from the frontline, he wrote whilst in pain in his bed.. he had to lay aside the work to return home to recuperate

JHT learned that the secret of the Christian life, was to exchange his life for the Life that Christ gives, he knew the reality of Verses like Galatians 2:20, Proverbs 3:5-6 and Phil 3:7-14.

He did not launch appeals for funds, he went to the source of all his funds.. that is to His Father and he supplied all his needs. Even in his early years in Hull, he relied upon God, he didn't make mention of a single need, he just let God take care of it, he let God remind his employer to pay his salary. The story is that his Christian employer had forgotten to pay his salary and then one late Saturday night, one of his wealthiest clients had come to pay his doctor's bill.. at 10pm!!!. God had moved that unbeliever to pay the doctor and so JHT was paid.

He had no big budgets.. no gimmicks. He set out missions in the cities and the missionaries trained up the local people, they did not hold a two week crusade and disappear on their private plane back to their comfy house, like many evangelists do today.

I am so happy to talk about this man.. he is buried in Changsha and one of my aims is to visit his grave. He died in 1905.. significantly this was the last time a true revival happened in the UK.

Please read his story and go to your local Christian bookshop and read his biography.. put away these celebrity preachers who talk about your best life now. Read about this true man of God.. not about what some perma tanned preacher has to say.. most of whom are not fit to called Preachers.

Please read about this awesome man of God.. I am honoured to be following in his footsteps so to speak

Thank You

God Bless
