UK: Mosque’s weekly call to prayer broadcast approved, objections dismissed as ‘racist’

Has the entirety of Britain, and the Western world in general, been afflicted with terminal idiocy? There is no conceivable way that this issue has anything to do with race, unless the Muslims who attend Farooq E Azam Mosque and Islamic Centre are all of one race and Muslims of all other races are barred from the premises.

The adhan, prayed in Arabic, repeats “Allahu akbar,” that is, “Allah is greater,” i.e., greater than you god or anything else that may claim your allegiance, six times, “I testify that there is no god but Allah” three times, and “I testify that Muhammad is Allah’s prophet” twice.

Dr. Gavin Ashenden, former chaplain to the British queen, who resigned his position in protest against a Qur’an reading in a Scottish church, observed that “the Muslim call to prayer is a dramatic piece of Islamic triumphalism. It proclaims Islam’s superiority over all other religions, and in so doing casts Jesus in the role of a charlatan and a liar. The Muslim god, Allah, is unknowable and has no son. Jesus was, therefore, a fraud in claiming He and the Father are one.”

Is Stockton really wise to broadcast repeatedly a declaration of the superiority of Islam, a faith that directs its adherents to make war against Christians and other non-Muslims and subjugate them as inferiors under the hegemony of believers (cf. Qur’an 9:29)?

Is Stockton wise to broadcast the cry “Allahu akbar,” beloved of jihad terrorists the world over? Chief 9/11 hijacker Mohammed Atta wrote this in his letter to himself before carrying out his jihad mission: “When the confrontation begins, strike like champions who do not want to go back to this world. Shout, ‘Allahu Akbar,’ because this strikes fear in the hearts of the non-believers.” This is why the Fort Hood jihad killer, Nidal Malik Hasan, shouted it as he shot thirteen Americans in November 2009, and why so many other jihadis have used it essentially as an announcement that non-Muslims are about to die.

A mosque’s proposal to broadcast a call to prayer once a week has received overwhelming support from councillors.

The Farooq E Azam Mosque and Islamic Centre asked for planning permission to broadcast the azan call to prayer on Fridays between 12 and 2pm. The call from the mosque on Bowesfield Lane, Parkfield, Stockton would last no more than two minutes and would be no louder than a vacuum cleaner under planning conditions.

As Stockton Council considered the proposal, planning services manager Simon Grundy said officers balanced the right to religious practice with the right of nearby residents to enjoy their homes. He said some might find the amplified call “intrusive”.

But he said conditions to lessen the impact, including the prayer being read just once for no more than two minutes, location of loudspeakers, controls over the decibel level and a noise suppressor, would “strike an appropriate balance”. He said: “With those controls we do not consider there is impact and harm.”…

Councillor Louise Baldock, representing Parkfield and Oxbridge, supported the plan saying the call to prayer would last a much shorter time than churches are allowed to ring bells. “It’ll bring much pleasure to the Muslim community,” she told the committee….

“The majority of the objections seem to be from people who object to the Muslim faith. Some of the comments have been so racist in nature that I’m surprised frankly that we’ve allowed them to be published.

“An anonymous leaflet was circulated, mostly in Hartburn and Oxbridge, asking residents to object to these proposals, part of an orchestrated campaign to whip up tension in the local community. I’m delighted that despite this campaign, so few residents fell into the trap.

“Local people are not objecting in their droves. There are 37 objections, most of them live at least a mile away from the mosque. I’m proud that Stockton is not a racist town.”…

The defamation campaign against the British prime minister is yet another sign of the ongoing radicalization of Palestinians not only against Israel, but anyone who dares to say a good word about Israel. This radicalization is the result of the massive campaign by Palestinian officials and media outlets to delegitimize Israel and demonize Jews.

The campaign coincides with the Palestinian leaders' continued talk about their commitment to the so-called two-state solution.

If the Palestinian leaders are so committed to the "two-state solution," they should cease and desist from their lethal incitement against Israel.

It is this campaign of hate that is the real obstacle for peace between Israel and the Palestinians. For many years, the Western countries that fund the Palestinians have utterly ignored Palestinian incitement against Israel.

Now, as is evident from the attacks on the British prime minister, Western leaders are themselves becoming victims of the Palestinians' smear campaigns. This is what happens when Western governments lavish untold millions of dollars on the Palestinians without requiring accountability and without demanding an end to the venomous Palestinian rhetoric against Israel and Jews.

British Prime Minister Liz Truss is facing a smear campaign by the Palestinians because she dared to publicly state her support for Israel. Truss is also under attack because she talked about the possibility of moving the British Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The campaign against the British PM is reminiscent of the slander the Palestinians used to direct against some of US President Donald Trump's senior advisers and representatives, including Ambassador David Friedman, Jason Greenblatt and Jared Kushner. Like Truss, the Trump administration officials were targeted because of their support for Israel.

Palestinian leaders have demonstrated over the years that they do not hesitate to use slurs and derogatory remarks against any Western official who dares to voice support for Israel or does not share their hatred of Israel. For these leaders, anyone who articulates support for Israel is a "racist" and "extremist."

Dear Prime Minister

It has been reported that negotiators are close to securing a deal to prevent Iran obtaining nuclear weapons.

However, Iran has been demanding concessions, which include the USA and Europe declassifying the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terror organisation.

The history of these talks tells us that Iran will demand further concessions with one aim: to allow them to pursue their nuclear ambitions.

As glaringly obvious as that is, US and European negotiators, which includes the UK, are in danger of papering over significant cracks to secure Iran’s signature.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is being placed under immense political pressure to close live cases into Iranian violations of nuclear non-proliferation regulations without completing thorough investigations.

To that point, when the organisation’s director general was asked whether he’d received answers to their investigations, he said: “Absolutely not … Iran has not given us the technically credible explanations we need to explain the origin of many traces of uranium”.

Furthermore, the country has already acquired enough highly enriched uranium to sustain two nuclear bombs.

It has amassed irreversible knowledge on weapons development and significant parts of its nuclear programme remain undisclosed, such as their construction of a large underground site south of Natanz, where the regime intends to operate up to a thousand advanced centrifuges.

Iran has also developed long-range missiles with a reach that threatens the security of Europe, which incidentally is the same technology required to project nuclear warheads.

And if you need verification of this, look no further than the chief of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, Mohammad Eslami, who has said that they have the technical ability to build an atomic bomb.

What is especially disconcerting is that any deal with Iran would release $100 billion every year to a regime that is hell-bent on the destruction of the democratic values we hold dear in the UK.

The near fatal attack on British Citizen Sir Salman Rushdie should be a reminder that 33 years after a non-retractable fatwa was issued by Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini, the Iranian regime is perfectly willing to be patient to achieve their nefarious aims.

Iran would likely funnel a significant amount of that ‘nuclear dividend’ into the IRGC, which the UK has still not proscribed despite the fact that it passes the tests set in the 2000 Terrorism Act.

You will be extremely busy in your new role but as one of your first acts will you make it clear that the UK will not be a signatory to an Iranian nuclear deal that fails to prevent Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.

With war between Iran and Israel on the horizon, Iran has unveiled the Arash-2 suicide UAV. According to Brig. Gen. Kioumars Heydari, the head of the Iranian military’s ground forces, the Arash-2 suicide UAV is specifically designed to attack Israel’s coastal cities where a majority of the country’s populace lives.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other Iranian leaders have repeatedly threatened to raze Tel Aviv and other major Israeli cities.

Iranian drones are seen as heavily effective against targets. So much so, that even Russia has requested an array of suicide UAVs to use against Ukraine. Iran has been upping it UAV production in Syria in order to use them immediately against Israel. With Russia in more and more need of suicide UAVs, Israel’s constant bombing of these facilities will begin to create even more friction between Moscow and Jerusalem.

Thank you, Ma’am, for keeping that promise fully, wholeheartedly and with a deep sense of love.

Thank you, Ma’am, for putting aside your personal grief, when your father passed away, and focusing instead on the needs of your country.

Thank you, Ma’am, for taking on the full burden of leadership at the young age of 25. Your life was ahead of you – but you put it behind you and chose your nation instead.

6 Facts about Britain’s new king.
With the passing of Britain’s beloved Queen Elizabeth II at age 96, the longest serving monarch in the United Kingdom’s history, her eldest son Prince Charles has become Britain’s newest monarch.  Here are six facts about King Charles III, Jews, and Israel.

Circumcised by a Rabbi
King Charles III has something in common with thousands of British Jews, he was circumcised by Rabbi Jacob Snowman (1871-1959), a brilliant physician and one of London’s leading mohelim (Jewish ritual circumcisers).

The tradition dates back to the early 1700s, when Britain’s King George I – who was born in Germany – imported the custom of German noblemen to have mohelim circumcise their sons.  It’s unclear why this became a tradition, but some speculate that their extensive experience reassured anxious parents that their sons would be safe during the procedure.  Charles’ mother Queen Elizabeth wanted only the best for Charles, so she turned to Rabbi Snowman, who was well known in London’s Jewish community.

Visiting Israel

Unlike Queen Elizabeth II, who never visited Israel in all her long years on the throne, her son Charles has made trips to the Jewish state.  One emotional visit occurred in 2016, when he travelled to Jerusalem for the funeral of former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres.  While there, Charles visited the grave of his grandmother, Princess Alice of Greece, who saved Jews during the Holocaust and was named Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem.  She is buried in Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.

Born in 1885, Princess Alice was the great granddaughter of Britain’s Queen Victoria.  She married Prince Andrew of Greece and moved to Athens with her new husband. She was intensely unhappy. A religious Christian, Alice watched as her husband drifted into a life of dissolution. With the rise of Nazism in the 1930s, her three daughters all became ardent Fascists and married Nazi officials.  Only her son Philip, King Charles father, defied Nazism, moving to England and fighting with distinction in the British air force during World War II.

Princess Alice remained at home in Athens alone; her husband had long since left her and was completely devoted to a life of drinking and gambling. During the Holocaust, Princess Alice invited a Jewish family she was friends with, the Cohens, to move into her apartment with her. Her building was next to the Gestapo’s Athens headquarters, and Princess Alice was even brought in for questioning at one point, but she refused to divulge the fact that she was sheltering Jews.

After the Holocaust, she was named Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem.  Alice founded a religious order and died in 1969.  Her wish was to be buried in Israel.  At first her family ignored her request, but in 1988 the Royal Family arranged for her remains to be reinterred in Jerusalem.  On his 2016 visit to her grave, Charles brought purple flowers that had been grown in Scotland – her favorite – and placed them on her grave.

King Charles visited Israel again in 2020, when he attended the World Holocaust Forum in Jerusalem, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.  There, Charles lingered, speaking with Jewish Holocaust survivors at length, and hearing their stories. “He was very interested in how it was in Auschwitz and how we managed to survive,” explained survivor Marta Weiss, who met the newest monarch during his visit. “He was very sympathetic. He came across as genuinely interested, not just doing it for the sake of it.”

He Owns His Own Personalized Kippah
King Charles III owns his own personalized kippah: a blue velvet yarmalke adorned with the official royal crest of the Prince of Wales, his previous title, embroidered in gold and white thread.


One of the first sightings of the royal kippah was at the installation of Britain’s Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mervis in 2013. Charles was the first member of the royal family to attend an installation of a chief rabbi.

Friends with Leading Orthodox Rabbi
King Charles and Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, the former Chief Rabbi of Britain, of blessed memory, forged a close bond, brought together by their public roles as community leaders in Britain and by their shared commitment to making the world a better place. When Rabbi Sacks died in 2020, Charles delivered an emotional eulogy for his friend and teacher.

Rabbi Jonathan Sacks “and I were exact contemporaries, born in the year of the foundation of the State of Israel, and, over many years, I had come to value his counsel immensely.  He was a trusted guide, and inspired teacher and a true and steadfast friend.  I shall miss him more than words can say….  He taught us how to listen to others, and how to learn from them without compromising the convictions of either party; he taught us to value participation in the common life of the nation; and through it all, he taught us the need to respect the integrity and harmony of God’s Creation.”

Adding Portraits of Holocaust Survivors to the Royal Collection
Last year, King Charles commissioned seven major new paintings to add to the official Royal Collection of art, displayed in Buckingham Palace: seven paintings of Holocaust survivors.  The project was part of the prince’s long-standing aim of educating future generations and ensuring that the horrors of the Holocaust are never forgotten.

King Charles himself wrote an introduction to the exhibit’s catalog: “Behind every portrait is a unique story, of a life lived, of love, of loss.  However, these portraits represent something far greater than seven remarkable individuals.  They stand as a living memorial to the six million innocent men, women, and children whose stories will never be told, whose portraits will never be painted. They stand as a powerful testament to the quite extraordinary resilience and courage of those who survived and who, despite their advancing years, have continued to tell the world of the unimaginable atrocities they witnessed. They stand as a permanent reminder for our generation – and indeed, to future generations – of the depths of depravity and evil humankind can fall to when reason, compassion and truth are abandoned.”

Touched by Jewish Prayers for the Royal Family
Each week, Jews across Britain and the Commonwealth pray for the welfare of the monarch and their near relations in synagogue on Shabbat.  For decades, that meant praying for the welfare of Queen Elizabeth II – and her son, “Charles, Prince of Wales, and all the royal family….”

In 2019, at a royal Hanukah party at Buckingham Palace, King Charles praised Britain’s Jewish community and formally thanked them for their prayers. “I say this from a particular and personal perspective, because I Have grown up being deeply touched by the fact that British synagogues have, for centuries, remembered my family in your weekly prayers. And as you remember my family, so we too remember and celebrate you.”

King Charles III is consoling his nation from the depths of his very own grief. It is a testament to his commitment to a life of service and giving to others.

After Queen Elizabeth II's death, Britain's Chief Rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, noted that "Throughout her extraordinary reign, she conducted herself with grace, dignity and humility and was a global role model for distinguished leadership and selfless devotion to society… Every week in synagogue we have prayed for her welfare, well-being and wisdom, and she never let us down."

We wish those very same qualities for her son, Britain's new king, and extend our deepest sympathies and our wishes for a long a successful reign.

Where Liz Truss stands on Israel
The UK gets a new Prime Minister today, Liz Truss. As she previously served as Foreign Secretary and Trade Secretary her positive stance on relations with Israel is already a known quantity and it is reassuring for supporters of Israel that Boris Johnson is being replaced by someone equally pro-Israel.
 
In her first conference speech as Foreign Secretary, the new PM said Israel was part of a “network of liberty” to resist dictatorships and “malign actors”. She has also said that the UK has “no closer friend and ally” than Israel and called for an “advanced free trade agreement that supports jobs and drives growth” between the two countries.
 
On UN anti-Israel bias she has said: “UN representatives with a history of antisemitic remarks should have no role in reviewing the activities of Israel.”
 
She says “We have to stop Iran getting nuclear weapons. That is very, very clear.”
 
She has pledged to crack down on anti-Israel boycotts, saying “Public bodies should not be engaging in such discriminatory policies which go against the stance of this government and sow needless division”.

Sarah Muscroft served as the head of the United Nations' Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
 
She was forced to apologise for a tweet she issued on 8 August 2022 that – rightly - condemned the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terror organisation for its "indiscriminate rocket fire" into Israel.
 
Following pushback from pro-Palestinian activists who accused her of being overly deferential to Israel, Muscroft called her original missive "ill informed" and then deleted her Twitter account altogether.
 
A UN official confirmed that Muscroft was removed from her post as a result of the tweets and will be reassigned elsewhere in the agency.
 
Nothing Ms Muscroft said was inaccurate.
 
PIJ is a terror organisation and it was responsible for indiscriminate rocket fire into Israel.
 
The United Nations Secretary General appears on television and pontificates about paths to peace, yet he presides over organisation that punishes its own staff for speaking the truth about terrorist attacks on Israel.
 
As the UK is a significant contributor to the United Nations and sits on the UN security council, we want activists to email the Foreign Secretary (copying in the UN) and ask what action she will take to press the UN to rectify this egregious decision.

Since CUFI started in the UK, we’ve believed it is imperative for the UK to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move the British embassy from Tel Aviv. Thousands of CUFI supporters have written to previous Foreign Secretaries and a separate CUFI petition that calls for Britain's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital has achieved over 50,000 signatures. We received strong opposition to our calls, whilst other voices dismissed our efforts as a waste of time. Despite this, we’ve continued to stand firm on the basis that Jerusalem is the eternal, undivided capital of Israel and we believe it is the right thing for Britain to recognise this historic fact.

The reasons for not moving the embassy have been based on weak foreign policy, discrimination and hypocrisy, with Britain locating embassies in other countries' capitals, except Israel’s, whilst having a consulate in Jerusalem only for Palestinians and not Israelis. Whilst we understand the hurdles to overcome, we’ve attempted to persuade previous governments to take confidence that a move is viable and that it is right and just.
 
We now have an opportunity like never before to present our case and encourage Liz Truss to demonstrate her true friendship towards Israel and make history by doing something no predecessor has done before – move the embassy to Jerusalem!

As we approach uncertain times in this nation, let us stand firm and pray that the UK will have boldness, assured that Britain will enter renewed blessing by honouring Israel with the recognition of its capital.

The UK gets a new Prime Minister today, Liz Truss. As she previously served as Foreign Secretary and Trade Secretary her positive stance on relations with Israel is already a known quantity and it is reassuring for supporters of Israel that Boris Johnson is being replaced by someone equally pro-Israel.
 
In her first conference speech as Foreign Secretary, the new PM said Israel was part of a “network of liberty” to resist dictatorships and “malign actors”. She has also said that the UK has “no closer friend and ally” than Israel and called for an “advanced free trade agreement that supports jobs and drives growth” between the two countries.
 
On UN anti-Israel bias she has said: “UN representatives with a history of antisemitic remarks should have no role in reviewing the activities of Israel.”
 
She says “We have to stop Iran getting nuclear weapons. That is very, very clear.”
 
She has pledged to crack down on anti-Israel boycotts, saying “Public bodies should not be engaging in such discriminatory policies which go against the stance of this government and sow needless division”.

Following pushback from pro-Palestinian activists who accused her of being overly deferential to Israel, Muscroft called her original missive "ill informed" and then deleted her Twitter account altogether.
 
A UN official confirmed that Muscroft was removed from her post as a result of the tweets and will be reassigned elsewhere in the agency.
 
Nothing Ms Muscroft said was inaccurate.
 
PIJ is a terror organisation and it was responsible for indiscriminate rocket fire into Israel.
 
The United Nations Secretary General appears on television and pontificates about paths to peace, yet he presides over organisation that punishes its own staff for speaking the truth about terrorist attacks on Israel.
 
As the UK is a significant contributor to the United Nations and sits on the UN security council, we want activists to email the Foreign Secretary (copying in the UN) and ask what action she will take to press the UN to rectify this egregious decision.

In 2004, the remains of at least 17 people including 11 children were discovered at the bottom of a medieval well during the construction of a shopping mall in Norwich England. The identity of the bodies and the story behind them remained a mystery until this week when the results of DNA analysis confirmed that they were Ashkenazi Jews, the victims of an antisemitic riot that took place on February 6,  in 1190 CE. Of the 17 people, six had well-preserved enough DNA to test and sequence. The analysis used radiocarbon dating of the bones as well as analysis of the pottery fragments found at the site. The results suggested that they had been alive between 1161 and 1216. The findings indicated that three of them were sisters, and the others were likely also related.

The scientists involved extracted DNA from the remains and compared it to samples taken from modern Ashkenazi Jews.

“I’m delighted and relieved that 12 years after we first started analyzing the remains of these individuals, technology has caught up and helped us to understand this historical cold case of who these people were and why we think they were murdered,” said Dr. Selina Brace, a specialist at the Natural History Museum in London and the lead author on the study.

Their DNA included variants associated with genetic diseases more commonly found in Ashkenazi Jewish populations today.

The mass murder was recorded by the chronicler Ralph de Diceto in his Imagines Historiarum II where he wrote: “Accordingly on 6th February [in 1190 AD] all the Jews who were found in their own houses at Norwich were butchered; some had taken refuge in the castle.” The medieval cleric described how in February 1190 “many of those who were hastening to Jerusalem” to partake in the recently launched Third Crusade were “determined first to rise against the Jews,”

The mass murder of the Jews of York came in the wake of the first accusation in history that Jews murdered Christian children in order to use their blood for baking Matza. This accusation, called a blood libel, became a common source of antisemitism that persisted until the 19th century. The murder accusation in York was initiated by a Benedictine Monk investigating the murder. Historians believe the true motive behind the libel was the debts that many of  theChristians owed to Jewish money lenders. These debts had increased due to the Third Crusades. It is believed that in one incident, some 150 Jews from 140 families were trapped in a tower on Shabbat Hagadol, the sabbath preceding Passover. The mob offered to release any Jews who converted to Christianity. A few chose this option but were murdered as they left the tower. The rest were burned to death in the tower. Hostility against Jews continued until, in 1290, Jews were expelled from England. Jews were not officially allowed to resettle in England until after 1655.

Researchers noted that the victims were thrown in headfirst, with the bodies of the adults cushioning the children’s fall. Because the skeletons showed no signs of trauma associated with trying to break a fall, the victims were likely already dead when deposited into the well. In 2013, Norwich’s Jewish community buried the remains at the Jewish Cemetery in Earlham Cemetery.

Idolatry went mainstream at the Commonwealth Games at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham., England, last week in an opening ceremony that even its supporters described as “quirky.”


The sporting event became a political platform four years ago when diving gold medallist Tom Daley  used his platform to strongly condemn his platform to condemn anti-gay laws in 37 Commonwealth countries strongly. Daley was chosen again to open the games by carrying the Queen’s Baton into the stadium surrounded by rainbow pride flags and joined by runners from Commonwealth nations where homosexuality is banned. 

Promotion for the event featured a comical Perry the Bull, the Birmingham mascot. The cartoon character has a dark back story as the town has hosted bull baitings since the 12th century. The bull would be attached to the ring, and dogs would be set on it; this was thought to improve the quality of the meat and make it ‘softer in digestion,  as well as provide ‘sport’ for the spectators in the market.

But the centerpiece of the opening ceremony was a 10-meter tall mechanical bull. Fifty people spent more than five months building the monstrosity dubbed “Raging Bull.” This stood in stark contrast to the games themselves, which were heavily promoted as “The Friendly Games.”

 The dramatic display, directed by Steven Knight, had the bull led into the Stadium by dancers in a dramatic production with a politicized presentation of history, as described by Wales Online:

The bull is led into the Stadium by underpaid, overworked female chain-makers of the Industrial Revolution, trapped by their own circumstances as they produce the bonds that hold others in the slave trade. The women break free via a minimum wage strike of 1910. The bull itself breaks free because of its huge stature. Stella, the hero of the Opening Ceremony, calms it down by offering it love and light. The emotive section ends with the bull eventually moving towards mutual tolerance after it is riled up once again and cries in pain. 

As an expression of this love, the female athletes gather around and embrace the bull. 

A creepy element was added at the last minute when the names of the 21 victims killed in the 1974 Mulberry Bush and Tavern in the Town bombings by the Irish Republican Army were inscribed on its headpiece. The organizers failed to inform the families of the victims who expressed annoyment in the media.

The bull is massive, requiring a 17-ton vehicle to move it around the stadium. Due to its size, the bull cannot be stored away, so the organizers plan to dismantle it. But the bull has a devoted following, and a petition has been set up to save it.

The popular attraction for the creation could be rooted in the bull being one of the oldest forms of idolatry. When Moses delayed in coming down from Sinai, the Children of Israel resorted to creating a golden calf, a form of idolatry they had witnessed in Egypt. In ancient Egyptian religion, Apis was a sacred bull worshiped in the Memphis region and was later adopted by Alexander the Great. The Canaanites worshipped a bull as the depiction of the fertility god Baal. Jereboam erected two golden bulls in the northern kingdom of Israel.

Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Conservative Party, has always been controversial but he raised the volume last week when he suggested that the best way to unite Europe was by recreating the Roman Empire. 

His vision of the Roman Empire in the 21st century is based on a partnership that included Turkey and the North African states. At the NATO summit in Madrid last month, he told replrters that this would be based on the Mare Nostrum, the Latin term for the Mediterranean Sea. 

It is interesting to note that 19th-century Italian nationalist fascists used the term to describe Italy as the successor state to the Roman Empire. The term was again taken up by Benito Mussolini for use in fascist propaganda, in a similar manner to Adolf Hitler’s lebensraum system of colonialism.

Johnson’s plan was in contrast to the ‘European Political Community’ presented by France’s President Emmanuel Macron to the European Parliament on May 9. This community would allow the EU to force closer ties with non-members, such as the UK and the nations of the western Balkans.

Though Britain left the European Union in 2020 in a move known as Brexit, some European leaders feel Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February has created a greater need for unity in the face of a common threat. A parallel organization would enable Britain to join without reentering the EU.

Johnson and Macron had an opportunity to discuss their divergent visions at the G7 Summit in Germany last week.

“Emmanuel has an idea, which I actually claim paternity of this idea,” Mr. Johnson said.

“I had this idea back when I first became foreign secretary. My view is that we should rebuild the whole concept of … so I think that Turkey should be there, I think that Maghreb should be there, and I think we should basically be recreating the Mare Nostrum of the Roman Empire.

“That’s basically what I think. Of course Ukraine, Turkey, Maghreb, there’s got to be a role for all of us in a wider conversation about issues that affect all of us.”

“There’s a role for… I think Turkey is crucial. I think the North African littoral is also a very important area for the wider European debate. Israel. Come on.”

Johnson has compared his country to the Roman Empire on several occasions. Last year, he blamed the fall of the Roman Empire on uncontrolled immigration, adding that the same problem was to blame for the current global warming, a problem which threatened to return the world to the “dark ages.”


“When the Roman empire fell, it was largely as a result of uncontrolled immigration,” Johnson said in an interview at the G-20 in Italy. “The empire could no longer control its borders, people came in from the east, all over the place, and we went into a dark ages, Europe went into a dark ages that lasted a very long time. The point of that is to say it can happen again. People should not be so conceited as to imagine that history is a one-way ratchet.”

“Unless you can make sure next week at Cop in Glasgow that we keep alive this prospect of restricting the growth in the temperature of the planet then we really face a real problem for humanity.”

This claim citing immigration as the cause of the fall of the Roman Empire was widely contested on social media.

In Jewish tradition, Rome is associated with Edom, the nation that descended from Esau, the son of Isaac and the brother of Jacob. Additionally, Edom has been associated with the Catholic Church which was centered in Rome. Rabbi Pinchas Winston, a prolific end o days writer, noted that England is associated with Edom and Rome, though not directly.

“Even though England was under Roman rule, its origins are in Germany,” Rabbi Winston said. Britain was a part of the Roman Empire for almost 400 years after the Britons were conquered by Julius Caesar in 54 BCE. A distinctive Romano-British culture emerged. The Roman goddess Britannia became the female personification of Britain. But the Britons were Germanic in origin.

“English is a Germanic language, not a romance language. But even Germany saw itself as the inheritor of the title of the Roman Empire. The Nazis referred to themselves as the Third Reich, as the presumed successor of the medieval and early modern Holy Roman Empire of 800 to 1806 (the First Reich) and the German Empire of 1871 to 1918 (the Second Reich).”

“Britain was imperialist because it saw itself as the successor to the Roman Empire,” Rabbi Winston said. Johnson’s empirical aspirations are not unfounded and can be understood to be a part of the British national identity as the British Empire once spanned a quarter of the globe.”

“Because they are Edom, England has a tendency to hate Jews and like Arabs,” Rabbi Winston said. He noted that all of Britain’s Jews were expelled in 1290 by an edict that was not rescinded until 1655. Blood Libels which falsely accuses Jews of murdering Christian boys in order to use their blood in the performance of religious rituals originated in 12th century England.

One of the worst anti-Semitic massacres of the Middle Ages took place in York in 1190. The city’s entire Jewish community was trapped by an angry mob inside the tower of York Castle. Many members of the community chose to commit suicide rather than be murdered or forcibly baptized by the attackers.

“Imperialism is anti-Bible,” Rabbi Winston said. “If you believe in the world to come, in God’s judgment, you wouldn’t endanger that by cruelly conquering others. But if you don’t believe in the world to come, then you would try to take a bigger part of this world.”

UK: New Plan to Tackle Illegal Immigration

The plan to outsource the processing of asylum applications overseas — if it survives legal challenges that are certain to come from human rights groups and the European Court of Human Rights — could become a model for other European countries seeking to crack down on illegal immigration.
 
The legal basis for the plan is enshrined in a new Nationality and Borders Act 2022 approved by Parliament on April 28. The new law, which integrates changes to British immigration law, includes offshoring asylum — processing claims at overseas facilities — and making it a criminal offense to knowingly arrive in the UK illegally.
 
"Access to the UK's asylum system should be based on need, not on the ability to pay people smugglers.... If you illegally enter the UK via a safe country in which you could have claimed asylum, you are not seeking refuge from imminent peril — as is the intended purpose of the asylum system — but are picking the UK as a preferred destination over others." — New Plan for Immigration, UK Home Office.

Nuclear missile convoy carrying up to six deadly warheads spotted on motorway going through Glasgow on their way to Royal Navy depot
A military convoy was spotted carrying up to six nuclear warheads headed along the motorway through Glasgow to an arms depot on Friday. The convoy was seen only a mile south of Glasgow city center, heading to Royal Naval Armaments Depot Coulport on Loch Long, according to NukeWatch, an organization that tracks and monitors the convoys that transport the UK’s Trident nuclear warheads.
The weapons of mass destruction were a ‘reminder of the UK’s contribution to nuclear terror,’ the group said, amid heightened tensions between NATO and Russia – which recently put its own nuclear weapons on high alert.

A ripped up road could cost millions to repair after mysterious underground movements left it so warped it looks like it had been hit by an earthquake.

A section of the B4069 near Lyneham in Wiltshire has been so badly damaged the tarmac has completely snapped or is at a 45 degree angle.

Local residents claim the subsidence has been getting worse over the last year and a landslip was inevitable.

Wiltshire Council say the road has been closed since February 17 – but some drivers are still trying to use it according to police.

The earthquake-like damage has been caused by unexplained underground movements which will now be investigated.

Local residents claim the subsidence has been getting worse over the last year and a landslip was inevitable.

Wiltshire Council said it is now waiting for a report from geotechnical specialists before taking further action.

Dr Mark McClelland, Wiltshire Council cabinet member for transport, told BBC Radio Wiltshire: ‘It could costs hundreds of thousands or up into the millions [to fix].

‘There is significant damage to the road. It could be up to 12 months in total. It’s not something that can be resolved in a matter of days or weeks.’

Dr McClelland added in some places the road had ‘buckled’ up to four feet, and descriptions of it looking like an earthquake were accurate.

He added: ‘The underlying ground has slipped and we need to understand why that has happened.

‘The police have been very clear that it’s very dangerous for motorists to ignore signage.’

The remarkable damage is also affecting local business, with local pubs like the Peterborough Arms suffering huge losses in bookings since the closure. [DM]

Ominous - Russian Naval Training Over Undersea Cables That Connect US & Europe

Last month, as tensions with Ukraine were heating up, the Russian navy geared up for an exercise just off the Irish coast near the town of Cork.
The exercise, which would have involved the launching of cannons and artillery, was to be held in a square section of water within Irish airspace and Ireland's Exclusive Economic Zone. But what is even more interesting?

This exercise was to take place directly over the majority of the undersea cables that connect Europe and the United States via the internet.

As expected, Ireland wasn't very happy about the ships.

Sinn Fein's spokesman on defense, John Brady, said, "There are vessels entering Ireland's exclusive economic zone which we don't have the ability to monitor. We have no idea what is happening below the surface. We don't know if devices are being fitted to these data cables or if they are being interfered with."

Allegedly, after a group of Irish fishermen met with the Russian ambassador to Ireland, the training exercise was called off.

 

Simon Coveney is Ireland's Minister for Foreign Affairs. He had this to say about the matter:

"What's interesting is that this exercise box is 170 nautical miles off the south coast of Ireland. Incidentally, so was a suspicious Russian trawler suspected of deploying submersibles back in July 2021, 170nm away. Could that previous event have been sub-surface reconnaissance? Others may recall that the Russians flew their ASW TU-142 Bears over that location in March 2020 too. Perhaps that was a subsurface signal mapping exercise? Testing reactions, or lack thereof?"

Have there been prior happenings over these undersea cables? It would appear so.

As Coveney pointed out, it was in 2021 that a Russian vessel known as a Yantar was spotted in the same region. Allegedly, this craft was outfitted with submersibles, both remote-operated and manned, that could have tampered with the undersea cables. It was hypothesized that "listening" devices could have been attached, monitoring internet traffic through the cables.

But this wasn't the first time such activities had taken place here.

In early 2020, Russian agents of the GRU - a military intelligence agency - were sent to the same region. Their task? To map the cable locations.

According to other sources, as far back as 2017, one of these cables was actually cut by a Russian spy ship.

So, what happens if these undersea cables are cut?

Being approximately the size of a garden hose, these cables most certainly aren't as difficult to cut as would be expected for something which crosses the world's oceans. Yes, there's the difficulty of accessing them underwater, but if that can be accomplished, the rest seems rather simple.

Approximately 97% of all intercontinental information travels by means of undersea cables scattered across the globe (through 428 of them, to be exact).

As expected, that's a lot of data flowing through these undersea cables. If they didn't work tomorrow, would that be a problem?

For starters, we need to consider that damage to these cables is relatively common. Every few days, one of these cables is harmed in some manner, usually by accident or by Mother Nature. On average, there are 200 of these events/year.

As Wired.com pointed out, should these cables from Ireland to the United States be cut, the traffic could be rerouted through other cables to reach each of these respective nations. Perhaps we could just reroute all of that traffic through the Pacific Ocean? It's a good thing Russia doesn't have a Pacific coast. Oh...wait...

Also, if you take the amount of data that was previously flowing through, let's say 15 cables, and then try to push it through three, could you expect to have the same internet speeds? Perhaps this isn't a fair analogy, but what happens when you have too many people attached to your home wifi?

Obviously, nobody needs to access undersea cables in order to cause problems with somebody's internet connection. Cyberattacks seem to work just fine. But, if you wanted to cause chaos with somebody's internet, and you had the means to reach their undersea cables, that would also prove to be an effective means, would it not?

In war, a soldier can use a shotgun or a carbine, but the end result is the same, is it not? Perhaps there are reasons (which I'm not aware of) one wouldn't use a cyberattack but would instead resort to manually attacking the cabling?

 

What happens if the internet goes down?

The point of all this is to bring up questions of preparedness. If the internet goes down because of some kind of tinkering with these cables, what are you likely to see? Communications problems, for starters. You wouldn't be able to withdraw your money from the ATM (if you're Canadian, you might be getting used to this). Banking may be impossible.

Your ability to pay for anything with a debit or credit card would likely be hampered. What would happen to the electric meter in your house if you had a smart meter? Would electricity still flow? Is the modern power supply dependent on the internet? We can get inklings of what this would look like here and here.

There are a lot of questions here, many of which are perhaps unknown. So, do what you can now to prepare. Make sure you have plenty of food and water. Have a communications plan with your loved ones so that you can stay in contact with them after a disaster. Be able to protect yourself and your family. Ireland can't seem to do that and ends up with foreign ships in its backyard as a result.

This is just another example of where a general level of preparedness can help you to cover a host of potential problems - many of which you would have never even realized were possibilities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned the UK and other nations that “war will be knocking on your door” if Russian aggression is left unchecked.
In a televised speech on Thursday (February 24) confirming Ukraine has broken diplomatic relations with Russia, Zelenskyy appealed for help. He says he has spoken with world leaders, first naming Great Britain, then the US, Sweden, Germany, Poland, and Austria.
“Dear European leaders, dear world leaders, leaders of the free world, if you won’t help us today, if you don’t show your strength, war will be knocking at your door,” he says, according to a translation provided by Al Jazeera.

The Most Famous Jewish Woman in Medieval England
Why Britain just dedicated a new statue to commemorate the trailblazing Licoricia of Winchester.

Britain’s newest statue was unveiled on February 10, 2022 with a group of prominent faith leaders in attendance to honor the Medieval Jewish woman being immortalized. Prince Charles had planned to attend but was forced to withdraw at the last moment when he tested positive for Covid. He sent a message saying he was “desperately disappointed” to miss the event.

In the 1200s, Licoricia of Winchester was one of the wealthiest and most prominent women in all of England during her lifetime. She rubbed shoulders with royalty and occupied a place of prestige and importance in King Henry III’s court. When she died, news of her passing reached far and wide, far beyond England’s shores.

Jews in Medieval England
Little is known of Licoricia’s early life. She was born in the early 1200s and married a man named Abraham, son of Isaac. Abraham seems to have originated in Kent, and moved to Winchester, where there was a small Jewish community. There, he and Licoricia had three sons, Isaac (whose English name was Cokerel), Baruch (Benedict) and Lumbard; and a daughter named Belia.

In the 1200s, Jews lived in England under the protection of the king and were considered the private “property” of the monarch. Jews were barred from most professions, forbidden from owning property, and largely forced into moneylending. When an English Jew died, their property and assets couldn’t be inherited by their children – all wealth was claimed by the crown. Beginning in 1194, King Richard I restricted Jews’ money-lending activity, restricting their business to a few official locations. Historian Richard Huscroft identified “six or seven” locales in all of England where Jews could legally conduct business. The towns of London, Norwich, Lincoln, and Winchester were among the first places designated; several more later joined the list.


Estimations of the number of Jews living in England vary widely, but it’s likely that the Jewish community in Winchester numbered no more than 80 people at the time Licoricia lived there. Most Jews lived clustered together in a central avenue called Jewry street. They were a close-knit group who supported and helped one another. Women as well as men worked in business, and some women formed business partnerships.

Life was incredibly hard for England’s Jews at the time. The first instance of a blood libel - where Jews were accused of killing a Christian child in order to use his blood in Jewish rituals - occurred in 1144 in the English town of Norwich. A second blood libel took place in 1255 - during Licoricia’s lifetime - when the body of a young child was found in a well in the town of Lincoln. The boy’s friends accused local Jews of kidnapping, torturing and murdering the child. Lincoln’s sheriff arrested over 90 Jews; 18 were executed. Both of the children at the centers of these blood libels were made into saints (St. William of Norwich and St. Hugh of Lincoln), stoking Christian hatred of local Jews still further.

In 1239, King Henry III ordered all of England’s Jews to turn over a third of their belongings and assets to the crown; Jews who couldn’t pay were imprisoned in the Tower of London while their property was seized. In 1253, all Jews in England were forced to wear a piece of cloth or parchment in the shape of two stone tablets on their clothes that represented the stone tablets that Moses brought down from Mount Sinai. Wealthy Jews could pay to avoid wearing this mark. (Historians speculate that Licoricia was among those Jews who avoided wearing the degrading garment.)


In 1265, during the unsuccessful rebellion of Simon de Montfrot against the king, fighting came to Winchester as King Henry III’s soldiers routed the rebellion. In the violence, many Christians in Winchester turned on their Jewish neighbors, attacking Winchester’s Jews and seizing their property. Licoricia, as well as some others of the town’s terrified Jews, managed to find refugee inside Winchester Castle. Those who couldn’t make it into the fortress in time were murdered. The survivors left the fortress after the siege and picked up the pieces of their lives, resuming business and communal life, but were left profoundly traumatized.

Building a Business Empire
It was against this turbulent and terrifying backdrop that Licoricia built her money-lending business, eventually becoming one of the wealthiest women in all of England.

The first historical documents that mention her date from early 1234, after the death of her husband Abraham. Licoricia remained in Winchester with her children after his death and continued in the family business of money-lending, going into business with another Jewish woman living in Winchester named Belia.

At some point Licoricia became acquainted with David of Oxford, another Jewish money-lender. He was one of the wealthiest Jews living in England. A communal leader, King Henry III used David to help him enforce his onerous taxes and regulations on England’s Jews. In the early 1240s. David was married to a woman named Muriel, who helped him in his business. But when he met Licoricia, David decided to divorce Muriel and seek Licoricia’s hand in marriage.

Muriel refused to accept the divorce. Two hundred years before, Rabbi Gershom of Mainz had ruled that a Jewish divorce could only be valid when both parties agreed. Muriel insisted that a Beit Din, a rabbinical court, hear her side and adjudicate in her marriage. As was the custom among English Jews at the time, Muriel and her family convened a Beit Din in France, where there was a larger and more scholarly Jewish community. The Beit Din ruled in Muriel’s favor, and a second Beit Din in Oxford threw out the divorce.

However, David was determined to obtain his divorce, and turned to King Henry III for help. King Henry III eagerly seized this chance to revoke the Jews’ autonomy in their civil and religious matters, and ordered his religious leaders to uphold the divorce, which they did. David set up a new house and allowance for Muriel, as Jewish law mandated he do after the divorce, and Licoricia and David soon married.

The Tower of London
Licoricia had another child with David, a son named Asher (known in English variously as Asser, Sweteman or Sweetman), but her marriage to David was short lived: David died in 1244, after only two years with Licoricia. Upon his death, all of his business records were taken to London to the Scaccarium Judaeorum, the special court in which Jewish business dealings were scrutinized and regulated. Licoricia was immediately looked at with suspicion. While the business was being assessed, in order to prevent Licoricia from interfering in any way, authorities arrested and imprisoned her in the Tower of London.

The Tower was a fearsome prison for English Jews. It is where 18 Jews accused of ritual murder were executed. Yet the Tower had also served as a refuge to local Jews during violent anti-Jewish pogroms. A number of Jews were murdered during King Richard I’s coronation in 1189, so before his coronation in 1216, King Henry III took steps to protect local Jews, allowing them to take shelter in the Tower of London.

There are records of Jewish prisoners in the Tower of London paying their jailors to obtain kosher food, and of Jewish prisoners paying bribes to be allowed to observe Yom Kippur in the prison. It’s possible that Licoricia engaged in similar bribery during her imprisonment there, while David’s business affairs were settled.

Starting Over as a Single Woman
When David’s business records were finally released, the authorities offered Licoricia the chance to buy back David’s outstanding loans at the exorbitant price of 5,000 marks. She somehow raised the money and went into business for herself. (In a particularly insulting gesture, most of her fee went to a special fund to build a new shrine to Edward the Confessor in Westminster Abbey.)

Licoricia took her children and returned to Winchester. There, she built up an even larger money-lending business. She lent funds directly to King Henry III, and visited his court whenever he visited Winchester. She also lent money to members of his royal court, to Queen Eleanor, and to local business people and farmers as well. She likely was outgoing and gregarious, with a winsome personality that drew people of all social classes to her and engendered trust. Legal records at the time record Licoricia’s business dealings across a wide swath of southern England over the next 30 years, usually in partnership with her sons. She lent to rich and poor alike, and also extended credit to her fellow Jews, helping support businesses. In time Licoricia became an intermediary between the Jewish community and the crown.

In 1258, Licoricia’s close business relations with King Henry III led to her being imprisoned in the Tower of London for a second time. Belia, the woman who’d worked with Licoricia as a business partner years before, wished to give a gold ring to King Henry III, perhaps as a bribe or to curry favor with the monarch. She entrusted it with her good friend Licoricia to deliver, but disaster struck. The ring disappeared and one of Licoricia’s neighbors, a woman named Ivetta, accused Licoricia of taking it. Once more, the authorities threw Licoricia into the Tower of London while the matter was investigated. Ivetta was eventually found to be the thief and, and King Henry III ordered Licoricia to be released. (The ring was never found.)

Licoricia’s Murder and the Decline of English Medieval Jewry
One day in 1277, Licoricia’s daughter Belia went to visit her mother and was confronted by a horrific sight: Licoricia and her Christian maid, a woman known as Alice of Bicton, lay dead in the house, both stabbed to death. A large amount of money was gone, presumably stolen by the murderers. Local authorities identified three men as possible culprits and brought them to trial, but a jury acquitted all three. (Conveniently, they named a man who’d left the city and who couldn’t be traced as the prime suspect.) Licoricia’s sons Cokerel and Sweteman later tried to bring civil case against the three men who likely murdered their mother, but with the legal system stacked against Jews, they were unsuccessful.

The 13 years following Licoricia’s death were crushing for England’s Jewish community.

When King Henry III died in 1272, King Edward I ascended the throne and faced increasing pressure from indebted aristocrats to end Jewish money-lending. In 1287, he ordered England’s Jews to pay an enormous tax of 20,000 marks to the crown. In Winchester, the entire Jewish community was imprisoned in Winchester Castle until the onerous tax was raised. Licoricia’s youngest son Asher was amongst them. While imprisoned, he carved a message in Hebrew into his prison cell’s wall: “On Friday Eve of the Sabbath in which the parsha Emor is read, all Jews of the land of the isle were imprisoned. I, Asher, inscribed this….”

Licoricia’s son Benedict became the only Jewish guildsman in all of Medieval England. He amassed great wealth and was the only English Jew accorded the same rights as an English subject given to Christians. But even this couldn’t save Licoricia’s family from the terrible fate of all English Jews. Another son was executed for the crime of coin-clipping, an accusation that was frequently leveled at English Jews, often baselessly. (Coin clipping was shaving off small amounts of coins and melting down the resulting stolen metal scraps.)
In 1290, all of England’s approximately 3,000 Jews were expelled from the country and banned from ever returning. (Jews were only allowed to live in England once more in 1656.) Licoricia’s descendants, like most of the English Jews, likely moved to France.

Licoricia’s Statue
Licoricia’s new statue depicts her standing erect and looking bold, holding the hand of one of her young sons. The base is inscribed in Hebrew and English with the words from Torah: “Love thy neighbor as thyself” (Leviticus 19:18). It’s a beautiful statue and fitting tribute to a woman who helped support her Jewish community, and who deserves to be remembered today.

The queen became the first British monarch to celebrate a platinum jubilee. Britain has been celebrating all year, but has been holding a special series of events over the course of four days. US President Joe Biden has affirmed that he will appoint a black woman to the top US court for the first time in history.

The eventual nominee will take up a seat to be vacated by liberal Justice Stephen Breyer, who will retire in June.

Appearing with Mr Breyer on Thursday, Mr Biden promised a replacement with the "experience and integrity" needed for the role.

He said he'll announce his pick by the end of February. Three judges are considered top contenders.

Ketanji Brown Jackson, 51, is widely believed to be the top contender to replace Justice Breyer.

Born in Washington DC and raised in Miami, Ms Jackson currently serves on the influential US Court of Appeals for the DC circuit. Three current justices previously served on the court.

"Presidents are not kings," she wrote in a 2019 ruling compelling a former aide to President Trump to testify in the Russia meddling probe.

"They do not have subjects, bound by loyalty or blood, whose destiny they are entitled to control."

The jurist has two degrees from Harvard University, which she attended as an undergraduate and as a law student, once serving as editor of the Harvard Law Review.

Meet the Supremes - the judges on the top US court
During her time at Harvard, she led protests against a student who draped a Confederate flag from his dorm window.

Her parents are both graduates of historically black colleges who began their careers are teachers.

Ms Jackson has also clerked for three federal judges in the past, most notably Justice Breyer himself from 1999-2000.

In January 2021, she was among President Biden's very first judicial picks, to fill the court seat vacated by his current Attorney General Merrick Garland.

At that confirmation hearing, former House Speaker and ex-Republican vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan introduced her; Mr Ryan is a relative by marriage.

"Our politics may differ, but my praise for Ketanji's intellect, for her character, for her integrity, it is unequivocal," he said.

Ms Jackson's husband is a surgeon and she has two children.

Leondra Kruger, 45, is in her eighth year on the California Supreme Court.

Born to a Jamaican immigrant mother and a Jewish father, the Pasadena native is a graduate of Harvard University and Yale Law School, where she was the first black woman to serve as editor of the Yale Law Journal.

In 2016, she became the first California Supreme Court judge to give birth while serving on the bench.

Ms Kruger previously worked at the Obama Department of Justice, from 2007-13.

During her tenure, she argued 12 cases before the US Supreme Court as deputy to the Solicitor General, the official who represents the government before the high court.

She reportedly twice turned down offers to serve as the Solicitor General.

The jurist also once clerked for late Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens.

Her husband is a lawyer and she has two young children.

Julianna Michelle Childs, 55, has served on the federal bench in South Carolina since 2010.

She also previously served as a circuit court judge in the state.

Unlike Ms Jackson and Ms Kruger, Ms Childs did not attend an Ivy League school, instead going to the University of South Carolina Law School.

In private practice, she was the first black female partner at a major law firm in the state.

Congressman Jim Clyburn, an influential black politician in the state whose endorsement of Mr Biden is widely credited with saving his 2020 campaign, has advocated for Ms Childs to be nominated because of her unorthodox resume.

Most recently, Mr Biden nominated Ms Childs to the DC Circuit Court of Appeals.

Why it matters
Black women make up only about three percent of the federal judiciary, according to data from the Federal Judicial Center, the court system's research arm.

Dr Taneisha Means, a political science professor at Vassar College, who researches race and judicial politics, says that a history of racism, sexism and elitism in the legal profession contributes to the scarcity.

Black law students are often left on the outside looking in because they did not go to an Ivy League university, or because they never clerked for a federal judge, said Dr Means, meaning few ever become eligible for the high court.

Ms Means added that a gruelling confirmation process in the US Senate likely makes federal judgeships even less palatable. Recent analysis indicates non-white nominees often face much longer waits than their white counterparts to be confirmed by the mostly white chamber.

Strengthening the diversity of the judicial branch has been a key priority for the Biden administration.

The Senate confirmed 40 new district and appellate judges last year, the most for a president in his first year since Ronald Reagan in 1981. Among them are the first Muslim-American judge and five black women.
