Mike Freer: Poster daubed with ‘300,000 dead’ may be about UK Jewish population
Tory hopeful for Finchley and Golders Green alerted Jewish News to the shocking vandalism on Friday with a week to go until election day
By JEWISH NEWS REPORTER

Mike Freer has been the local MP since 2010.
A Conservative politician in one of Britain’s most Jewish constituencies whose election poster was defaced with the words “300,000 dead” has said it may be a reference to Jews.

Mike Freer, who has been the Conservative MP for Finchley and Golders Green since 2010, and who is defending his seat, alerted Jewish News to the shocking vandalism on Friday.

“One of my boards previously defaced was done again last night,” he said. “This time ‘300,000 dead’ was written on it. I’m not sure what it is referring to but my heart sank when I thought the person might be referring to the Jewish population in the UK.”

Freer added that he had escalated it to the local police commander “who is, as ever, treating it very seriously”.

Antisemitic graffiti daubed over Freer’s election campaign board in Golders Green on Monday, with what resembles a swastika and the words: “Boris out! Hail Boris”.

Freer said: “I was upset to see it… It just shows that the poison of antisemitism is never far from the surface and it makes me more committed than ever to stand alongside my constituents and face down the bigots.”

Jewish politician Luciana Berger is challenging Freer in the constituency. She is standing for the Liberal Democrats, having resigned from the Labour Party earlier this year, citing concerns over antisemitism.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan: “One of Our Strengths Is Our Diversity”
DEC 8, 2019 10:00 AM BY HUGH FITZGERALD53 COMMENTS
Sadiq Khan, the Muslim mayor of London, and a tireless apologist for Islam, had his usual reaction to the latest murders by Muslim terrorists in “the greatest city in the world.” For Sadiq Khan, the defense and promotion of “diversity” has become an obsession. Last summer Sadiq Khan earned the outrage of many Londoners for his expensive focus on this “diversity”; they discovered he now spends annually close to $2 million on”diversity” bosses for London Transport, far more than he does on employees devoted to keeping fares down, or on improving safety in the system.

Here’s Khan’s latest praise of “diversity”:

London mayor Sadiq Khan told reporters that diversity is one of the British capital’s strengths in the wake of the London Bridge attack, and that all great cities are targets for terrorists.

“Look, I’m mayor of the greatest city in the world, and one of our strengths is our diversity,” he told reporters shortly the attack by Usman Khan, a convicted radical Islamic terrorist who had been freed from prison on a tag after serving less than half of a 16-year term, which left two dead and three injured.

This insistence that “diversity is our strength” is the byword not just of Sadiq Khan, but of many European politicians, and above all, of Chancellor Merkel. It is stated as a given; no evidence need be offered. But why should we accept this assertion? Is all “diversity” a “source of strength”? What kind of “strength”? Start asking these questions, and you will not get a coherent answer, but merely self-satisfied repetition of the mantra that brooks of no disagreement. In Seoul, in Beijing, in Tokyo, in Warsaw, in Budapest, there is precious little diversity, and no one in those cities appears to be longing for it to arrive, so that those capitals can be more like the London of Sadiq Khan. London’s “diversity” finds its expression not just in the terrorist attacks that fill Londoners with anxiety, but in the crime wave of stabbings by Muslim criminals, in the “greatest city in the world.” The “diversity” that the 3.5 million Muslims have brought to Great Britain includes, as well, the grooming gangs in a dozen of its cities that have led to the ruined lives of tens of thousands of English girls, the victims of “diversity” whom Sadiq Khan appears not to have noticed.

“But we do know there are people out there who hate our diversity, hate what we stand for, and are trying to seek to divide us”, he added — although his grounds for appearing to suggest that terrorists despise Britain for being diverse were unclear.

Who are the people who are taught to “hate our diversity”? Surely it is the Muslims themselves, who read Qur’anic verses that describe them as “the best of peoples” while non-Muslims are “the most vile of creatures”? Why should Muslims wish to have anything to do with such people? The Qur’an further instructs them not to take Christians or Jews as friends, for “they are friends only with each other.” The doctrine of Al-wala’ wa-l-bara’ (Arabic: الولاء والبراء‎) is a concept in Islam, literally “loyalty and disavowal,” which signifies loving and hating for the sake of Allah. This type of love requires Muslims to love those who are obedient to Allah and to defend and assist them, and to hate those who are disobedient, which means all non-Muslims.

Muslims are thus taught not to integrate into a non-Muslim society, but instead are instructed in more than a hundred Qur’anic verses to fight, to kill, to smite at the necks of, to strike terror in the hearts of, non-Muslims. Is such a population a source of “strength” for British society, or is it, rather, a source of physical danger and societal disarray? We know the answer to this: look at the London that Sadiq Khan has helped create, and what his cherished “diversity” has meant to the social fabric, and to the physical safety, of Londoners.

Mayor Khan then flirted with controversy with a statement echoing an earlier, infamous former claim of his with respect to terror attacks — i.e. that “part and parcel of living in a great global city is you’ve got to be prepared for these things” — by telling reporters: “Look, I know, speaking to colleagues around the world, mayors of other great cities, that we’re all targets for terrorists.”

So according to Mayor Khan, terrorism is something you’ve just got to accept, it’s the price we all pay for the privilege of living in a great city, we just have to prepare ourselves, there’s nothing much else to be done.

Some critics of the Mayor of London have suggested that such attacks only appear to be a feature of life in cities such as London, while in a relatively homogenous place like the Japanese capital of Tokyo they are exceedingly rare — although not entirely unknown….

Quite right: there are many homogeneous cities whose inhabitants are not impressed with those in the West celebrating “diversity”; they do not want it for themselves, and have made great efforts to prevent such “diversity” from being imposed on them. “Non-diversity” – homogeneity of the populace – is seen as a source of societal strength and safety in Seoul, Beijing, Tokyo, Budapest, Warsaw. What would Mayor Khan urge the Mayor of Tokyo to do – let in a million Muslims so Tokyo’s residents can enjoy the same benefits of “diversity” that Londoners do? Not a chance.

“[T]he message I want to send… is we are resolute, we stand united in the face of terrorism, and we will not allow anybody to divide us,” he insisted.

Who are “we” who “stand united”? Surely not those who are taught in their holy book to despise, hate, fight, and strike terror in the hearts of those who do not belong to the same faith? Sadiq Khan says “we stand united in the face of terrorism.” Has he taken a poll of Muslims? How does he know that they are “united in the face of terrorism” when they are told in several Qur’anic verses to “strike terror in the hearts of the Unbelievers”? And what are Muslims to think about terrorism  when Muhammad himself, the Perfect Man and Model of Conduct, boasts in a hadith that “I have been made victorious through terror”? And how does Sadiq Khan know that “we [the British] are resolute…united in the face of terrorism, “and we will not allow anybody to divide us”? Haven’t the bombs and knives of murderous Muslim terrorists done quite enough already to “divide us”?

Here’s what we have in Sadiq Khan: a mayor who has presided over the greatest crime wave in London’s modern history; there are now more murders – mostly by stabbing – in London than in New York. The rate of criminality among Muslims in Great Britain far exceeds that of native British or that of other, non-Muslim immigrants. Don’t bother Mayor Khan with talk of Muslim terrorists and grooming gangs and stabbings on London streets. Sadiq Khan doesn’t need to present evidence; he’s the mayor of the greatest city in the world and he knows that “one of our strengths is our diversity.” But with each new atrocity committed by Muslims who have been prompted by the Qur’an, ever fewer British – despite the pollyannish views about “diversity” that they are constantly fed by the media and many politicians aside from Mayor Khan — are prepared to believe him. That growing disbelief is a welcome sign of mental health.

Two British women are in hospital after the New Zealand volcano disaster, the UK's top envoy to the country has revealed.

The two women were among 47 people on White Island, a volcanic island also known as Whakaari, when it erupted with a large plume of ash and steam at 2.11pm on Monday.

Of the 47 people, 34 were rescued from the island and 31 of them remain in hospital, some of them critically wounded. Five are dead, leaving eight unaccounted for.

UK high commissioner Laura Clarke did not give details of the two British women's injuries, but many people have suffered severe burns.

Tourists from Australia, the US, China and Malaysia are also missing or wounded along with New Zealanders, prime minister Jacinda Ardern revealed.

Footage taken from helicopters showed 'no signs of life', according to New Zealand police, who said they do not expect to find any more survivors.

The disaster immediately raised questions about why tourists were allowed to visit the island, after the volcanic alert level had been raised just weeks earlier.

Ms Ardern said it was a 'very unpredictable volcano' and said questions about tourism would be 'answered by the appropriate authorities', but said 'for now we're focused on those who are caught up in this horrific event'.

An aide to Matt Hancock was alleged punched by a Labour activist as the Health Secretary visited a hospital at the centre of a storm about a sick child who was forced to lie on the floor while he waited for treatment.
Mr Hancock was sent to Leeds General Infirmary in a bid to defuse a row after a photograph of the four-year-old boy was widely publicised.
But Mr Hancock was apparently met at the hospital by Labour activists and his arrival descended into an ugly scene with reports that one of his advisers was assaulted.

It comes after Boris Johnson bizarrely took a reporter's phone and put it in his pocket after he was confronted over the picture.
The PM took evasive action despite apologising to the family of Jack Williment-Barr, who was taken to Leeds General Infirmary by ambulance last week with suspected pneumonia.
As there were no beds and the department was experiencing its busiest week since 2016, he was left lying on a pile of coats in a clinical treatment room, attached to an oxygen mask. The child was later diagnosed with flu and tonsillitis.
Speaking on the election trail in the north of England today, the Prime Minister said sorry and pointed to the huge investment being pledged by the Tories.
But when ITV reporter Jo Pike tried to show him the picture of the boy on his phone, Mr Johnson declined to look at it. He eventually took the device and put it in his pocket,
When Pike described what the premier had done, Mr Johnson retrieved the mobile and did inspect the picture.
'It's a terrible, terrible photo. And I apologise obviously to the families and all those who have terrible experiences in the NHS,' he said.
'But what we are doing is supporting the NHS, and on the whole I think patients in the NHS have a much, much better experience than this poor kid has had.
'That's why we're making huge investments into the NHS, and we can only do it if we get Parliament going, if we unblock the current deadlock, and we move forward.'
At the end of the interview, Mr Johnson said: 'I'm sorry to have taken your phone. There you go.'
The odd exchange was seized on by Jeremy Corbyn, who insisted it showed that Mr Johnson did not care about patients.

Mr Johnson was also grilled on the interview as he answered questions from journalists at the event in Sunderland.

He replied: 'We are not only investing in children's services in Leeds but we're also rebuilding the whole Leeds Infirmary from top to bottom.

'And we can do that because we're now putting the biggest ever investment into the NHS.

'What I don't want to see is a fantastic programme that is going to unite and level up our country being blocked again.'

'I am very proud of what we are doing to rebuild Leeds General Infirmary. It will be a fantastic project,' he said.

In Grimsby earlier, Mr Johnson was asked if he had an apology for the family.

He said:  'Yeah, I do, and this is exactly why we need to move on.

'We're putting £34billion into the NHS now, this is the biggest investment we've seen in modern times but we need to drive it forward.'

Mr Johnson said there is 'so much more that needs to be done', adding: 'That is why we just need to unblock the politics of this country and move forward.'

Speaking to LBC the Prime Minister said he wanted to apologise to 'everyone who has a bad experience'.

The Prime Minister added: 'By and large I think the NHS do an amazing job, and I think they deserve all praise for the service they provide.

'But they do need investment and that's why we're doing it now.

'But they need investment from a One Nation government that really cares and understands - that's us that cares and understands - and you need long-term funding.'

Mother Sarah Williment, a primary school assistant from Leeds, described the situation as a 'crisis'.

She said: '[Jack] spent eight-and-a-half hours in A&E... Jack wasn't provided with a bed on a ward until 13-and-a-half hours later.'

Jack was eventually diagnosed with influenza A and tonsillitis.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock thanked 'tireless' hospital staff, adding: 'Leeds has been allocated £600million of funding as part of our commitment to build 40 new hospitals.'

One-fifth of patients in A&E must wait more than 12 hours for a bed, experts claim

More than 1 in 20 patients who went to A&E last week waited at least 12 hours for a bed, experts have claimed.

All patients are supposed to be seen within a target of four hours, but thousands are being 'stranded on a trolley in a corridor' as the NHS faces its worst winter crisis in history.

The Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) analysed data from 50 A&E departments which provide around one third of the UK's acute hospital beds.

ts report shows in the first week of December, some 5,171 of the 103,099 patients who attended these hospitals were stuck in A&E for more than 12 hours.

Only 68 per cent of patients were seen within the target of four hours – the worst performance on record and 10 per cent lower than the same point last year.

In recent days there has been chaos at A&E departments, with dozens of ambulances queuing outside hospitals because hospital beds were unavailable.

The crisis was made worse by a norovirus outbreak that closed more than 1,100 beds last week.

The RCEM's Dr Katherine Henderson said: 'Many patients are now getting often life-changing news while stranded on a trolley in a corridor.

'This cannot be right, and we must strive to put an end to 'corridor care'. We are clearly in the worst state we've ever been in as we enter the true winter season.'

Monthly NHS figures showing the scale of the crisis will be released on Friday.

But the RCEM warns NHS reports do not reflect the true scale because A&E waiting times are measured from when a decision is made to admit a patient, rather than when they arrived.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: 'Our hospitals are treating a record number of people, and with increasing demand we are putting a record £33.9billion extra funding into our NHS.'

Boris Johnson warned that Jeremy Corbyn will 'take the country back decades' and fail to end the Brexit 'chaos' tonight as they crossed swords in the final election TV showdown.

In front of a primetime Friday night audience on BBC One, the PM urged the public to back his EU deal to 'unlock the potential' of the UK.

He said he had yet to hear what Mr Corbyn thought on Brexit - and the veteran left-winger was quickly forced to admit he would stay neutral in a second referendum he wants to hold.

Mr Corbyn insisted he was putting forward an 'ambitious' programme, as he desperately to turn the tide as polls continue to show the Tories ahead.

The clash - chaired by Nick Robinson - immediately promised to be a brutal affair, with Mr Johnson swiping that his opponent is 'ignorant of the realities' on trade.

Ipsos MORI research earlier found Labour has been making up some ground over the past three weeks, with its support increasing four points. But the Conservatives still have a 12-point lead, which would be enough for a comfortable majority.

Mr Corbyn launched another frantic effort to bridge the gap earlier, staging another 'reveal' of a leaked document, which he claimed showed Mr Johnson's Brexit deal would put up barriers between the mainland and Northern Ireland.

However, Mr Johnson flatly dismissed the claim, saying the UK would leave the EU 'whole and entire'.

And he went on the attack by ridiculing the Labour leader's extraordinary policy of calling a second referendum but refusing to say whether he wanted to leave the bloc.

The leaders were seen as having battled effectively to a standstill in their previous ITV showdown, although the PM managed to hammer home his key message on Brexit.

The 100-strong audience in Maidstone tonight has been selected to include equal numbers of Conservative and Labour supporters, as well as a smattering of backers of other parties and undecideds.

There will be slightly more Leave voters than Remain in the audience, reflecting the result of the 2016 referendum. Some of the audience was too young to have voted three years ago.

They will ask questions and Robinson will also pose some that have been submitted online.

Meanwhile, Mr Johnson has been facing criticism for ducking an interview with veteran BBC interrogator Andrew Neil.

In a scathing video that has received millions of views online, Neil pointed out that all the other main party leaders had agreed to be quizzed, with Jeremy Corbyn suffering a disastrous mauling over Labour anti-Semitism and his manifesto spending splurge.

Staring straight down the camera, he said: 'The Prime Minister of our nation will at times have to stand up to President Trump, President Putin, President Xi of China.

'So we're surely not expecting too much that he spend half an hour standing up to me.'

But a senior Tory source gave the strongest hint yet that Mr Johnson will snub the challenge, saying voters were fed up with programmes that were 'all about the interviewer' and involved 'endless interruptions'.

Mr Johnson himself insisted he 'couldn't accommodate everybody' - joking that he was also having to turn down a debate with 'Lord Buckethead'.

'As I say, I think most people would say, I think I'm the only Prime Minister to have done not one, but by tonight two head-to-head debates,' he said on a visit to Kent.

There will be slightly more Leave voters than Remain in the audience, reflecting the result of the 2016 referendum. Some of the audience was too young to have voted three years ago.

They will ask questions and Robinson will also pose some that have been submitted online.

'I've done 118 sitdown interviews with journalists, I've fielded innumerable questions ... we cannot accommodate everybody.

'There's a guy called Lord Buckethead who wants to have a head-to-head debate with me. Unfortunately I'm not able to fit him in. You know, we can't do absolutely everything.'

As the campaign turned increasingly nasty, Channel 4 is embroiled in a bias row after wrongly captioning a video of Boris Johnson with subtitles referring to the race of immigrants.

Mr Johnson made a speech yesterday in which he said new immigration controls would ensure 'people of talent' still come to Britain.

But in the broadcaster's subtitles of the speech, the phrase was changed to become 'people of colour', with the video then being shared widely online by people insisting the wrongly-reported comments were racist.

The channel today apologised for the mistake, saying: 'Boris Johnson says 'people of talent' not 'people of colour'. Our earlier tweet was a mistake. We misheard and we apologise.'

But senior Conservatives accused the channel of trying to smear the Prime Minister. Party chairman James Cleverly tweeted: 'Boris has used the phrase 'people of talent' many times during this election campaign in relation to our points based immigration policy.'

There was a boost for the Tories today as a YouGov poll for the Times put the party up eight points in Scotland since August, at 28 per cent.

Labour is stuck on 15 per cent - but they are all way behind the SNP on 44 per cent..

The Liberal Democrats were on 12 per cent.

According to projections by polling expert Sir John Curtice, this would see the number of SNP MPs increase from 35 to 46.

Writing in the Times, he said: 'Most of the seats being defended by the Conservatives are highly marginal.

'Consequently, even if the party retains all the support it won in 2017, it could still lose a significant number of seats if, as our poll suggests, support for the SNP increases.'

The analysis suggests the Conservatives would secure eight seats in Scotland, the Liberal Democrats four and Labour one.

Poll shows the election battle is narrowing but latest show the Conservatives are still 12 point ahead of Labour
By JAMES TAPSFIELD, POLITICAL EDITOR FOR MAILONLINE and DAVID WILCOCK, WHITEHALL CORRESPONDENT FOR MAILONLINE
PUBLISHED: 20:30, 6 December 2019 | UPDATED: 21:45, 6 December 2019
Boris Johnson was tonight declared the winner of the final election TV showdown after roasting Jeremy Corbyn over Brexit, supporting the IRA, stealth taxes and 'overthrowing capitalism'.

A snap YouGov poll found the PM performed better in the primetime BBC One clash by 52 per cent to 48 per cent - a result that will delight Tory strategists.

During a bruising hour-long session, chaired by Nick Robinson, Mr Johnson urged the public to back him on Brexit so the country can move on.

He ridiculed Labour's muddled position of renegotiating with Brussels and holding another referendum, but with Mr Corbyn staying neutral. 'You cannot negotiate a deal if you are neutral on it… it's a failure of leadership on the biggest issue facing this country at the moment,' he said.

The veteran left-winger was also pressed over Labour's plans to introduce a four-day week in the NHS, and failed to deny that he wants to 'overthrow capitalism'.

But he insisted he was putting forward an 'ambitious' programme that could end child poverty, as he desperately to turn the tide as polls continue to show the Tories ahead.

The clash quickly turned nasty, with Mr Johnson getting a round of applause as he accused Mr Corbyn of 'supporting the IRA for four decades'. He also repeatedly swiped that his opponent was 'ignorant' on the benefits of free trade.
Ipsos MORI research earlier found Labour has been making up some ground over the past three weeks, with its support increasing four points. But the Conservatives still have a 12-point lead, which would be enough for a comfortable majority.
The PM and the Labour leader are facing off in the final head-to-head of the campaign, in front of a primetime Friday night audience on BBC One
Mr Corbyn +8
Mr Johnson +8
Mr Corbyn said he wanted to 'help the many not the few' while Mr Johnson said the country needed to 'move on' and get Brexit done
As the pair traded blows on Brexit, Mr Johnson said: 'Who is going to negotiate it? Because as far as I can see everyone on the Labour frontbench … is campaigning for Remain apart from Mr Corbyn who is neutral on the matter,' Mr Johnson said. 'How can you get a new deal from Brussels if you don't really believe in it?'
Mr Johnson wants a trade deal with the US which would take 'seven years' to negotiate.

Mr Corbyn said: 'He knows he can't get a deal quickly with the USA because of the way in which the US political system works. 'And so what he will do is walk out of a relationship with the EU into a relationship with nobody.'
The PM warned that Labour governments always went out of power with a crisis - but he said Mr Corbyn and shadow chancellor John McDonnell would trigger one immediately.

Mr Corbyn said he wanted 'Socialism carried out in a democratic way in this country' to raise living standards.
But Mr Johnson shot back: 'I would say it is one-nation Conservatism, which understands the vital importance of a dynamic market economy as the only way in which you can pay for fantastic public services and for looking after the poorest and neediest in our society...
To attack capitalism as Mr Corbyn and Mr McDonnell do is absolutely senseless.'

Asked if he thought Mr Corbyn 'wanted to destroy capitalism', the PM said: 'John McDonnell, who is the shadow chancellor, and some would say the intellectual driving force this type of plio-socialism, is committed, he says, to fermenting the overthrow of capitalism. I think that is a mistake. 'I don't think that is the right way forward for our country.'

Mr Corbyn replied: 'My kind of socialism is one where you don't leave people behind, you don't ignore the fact that four million of our children are living in poverty, you don't ignore the fact that you have thousands of people sleeping on the streets of this country - the fifth richest country in the world. The inequality has got worse.'

In one exchange Mr Corbyn seemed to contradict Mr McDonnell, who has said he wants to introduce a four-day working week in the NHS as well as the rest of the economy. he wants to see the working week come down, but added: 'There is no plan to bring in a four day week in the NHS.'

Earlier, Mr Corbyn launched another frantic effort to bridge the gap, staging another 'reveal' of a leaked document, which he claimed showed Mr Johnson's Brexit deal would put up barriers between the mainland and Northern Ireland.

There are slightly more Leave voters than Remain in the audience, reflecting the result of the 2016 referendum. Some of the audience was too young to have voted three years ago.
Robinson also posed some that have been submitted online.

'I've done 118 sitdown interviews with journalists, I've fielded innumerable questions ... we cannot accommodate everybody.

Prince Charles hails ‘immense blessings’ British Jews brought to country

Prince Charles has spoken of the “immense blessings” British Jews have brought to the country – and insisted his support for communal causes “is the least I can do to try to repay” them.

The heir to the throne also revealed how his father Prince Philip helped a Jewish boy facing antisemitic bullying in 1930s Germany, as he addressed a varied guest-list of 400 at the first Buckingham Palace celebrating the community’s contribution.

Describing the ties between Anglo-Jewry and the Crown as “special and precious”, he added: “I say this from a particular and personal perspective because I have grown up being deeply touched by the fact that British synagogues have, for centuries, remembered my family in your weekly prayers. And as you remember my family, so we too remember and celebrate you.”

Guests at the historic reception – organised over several months with the support of the Board of Deputies – included high-profile figures like the Chief Rabbi, Howard Jacobson, Robert Peston and Nigella Lawson. But he said he wanted to offer “particular gratitude” to the less known volunteers and charity workers who made up the bulk of the guest list.

The Prince said the festive season was a fitting moment to celebrate the “contribution of our Jewish community to the health, wealth and happiness of the nation. In every walk of life, in every field of endeavour, our nation could have had no more generous citizens, and no more faithful friends”. The UK, he insisted, is “enriched by the diversity of its constituent parts. Its whole is so much greater than its parts”.

Addressing the gathering – which included rabbis from all denominations but no candidates amid sensitivity in the lead up to next week’s election – His Royal Highness said he was “immensely proud” of his grandmother Prince Alice who is recognised as Righteous Among the National for hiding a Jewish family during the War.

And he went on to tell a lesser-known another story of courage in his own family that too place in 1933 when Prince Philip was spending a year in school in Germany. “He helped an older schoolboy who had been identified as a Jew and badly mistreated by other boys,” Charles recalled. ״His act of compassion is a source of great pride and inspiration to me.”

Recalling how Britain welcomed Jews fleeing pogroms or the Nazis on the Kindertransport, he said: “In turn, many thousands of Jewish people played a vital role in the war effort. My own great uncle, Lord Mountbatten, was enormously proud of the airman, RAF Flight Sergeant Jack Nissenthall, whose missions behind enemy lines would have been a certain death sentence had he ever been captured. This is a legacy in which all share.”

He spoke of his own work in supporting Jewish causes including attending Kindertransport reunions organised by the Association of Jewish Refugees, as well as being patron of World Jewish Relief and the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.

“I see this as the least I can do to try to repay, in some small way, the immense blessings the Jewish people have brought to this land and, indeed, to humanity,” he said. “In the Hebrew Scriptures, which provide so much of the ethical underpinning of our society, we read in The Book of Deuteronomy, the inspiring exhortation: ‘Choose life!’

The Jewish community of the United Kingdom have fulfilled that divine command in countless ways, and our society has been immeasurably enriched as a result.”

Guests were serenaded on arrival at the Palace by the sounds of a JLGB band. In an extra historic twist, a group of around 20 guests took part in an impromptu evening prayer service by the throne – led by Jewish Leadership Council CEO Simon Johnson.

Channel 4 has been slammed for wrongly captioning a video of Boris Johnson with subtitles referring to the race of immigrants.

Mr Johnson made a speech yesterday in which he said new immigration controls would ensure 'people of talent' still come to Britain.

But in Channel 4's subtitles of the speech, the phrase was changed to become 'people of colour', with the video then being shared widely online by people insisting the wrongly-reported comments were racist.

The channel today apologised for the mistake, saying: 'Boris Johnson says 'people of talent' not 'people of colour'. Our earlier tweet was a mistake. We misheard and we apologise.'

Boris Johnson urges voters to 'get Britain out of neutral' - as poll finds election battle has narrowed
Boris Johnson appealed for voters to 'get Britain out of neutral' today as a dramatic poll showed the election battle has narrowed with just six days to go.

Ipsos MORI research found Labour has been making up some ground on the Tories over the past fortnight - with support increasing four points.

But the Conservatives still have a significant advantage on 44 per cent to 32 per cent for Jeremy Corbyn's party.

A senior Tory source said: 'This shows why it has been impossible to co-operate with Channel 4 News, they are campaigners in this election - inventing the most damaging things possible to further their campaign against Brexit.

'This sort of thing is why so many media organisations have collapsing audiences. We sadly do not expect the senior management at Channel 4 to take this terrible mistake seriously and we expect more of the same.'

Mr Johnson's actual words at an election campaign event in Derbyshire were: 'We'll be able to do all sorts of things differently and better including controlling our immigration system for the first time in decades and that would be a good thing.

'I'm in favour of having people of talent come to this country but I think we should have it democratically controlled.'

The wrongly reported comments were seized upon by his opponents, who claimed what he said was racist.

It comes after another row over Channel 4's decision to replace Mr Johnson with an ice sculpture on its TV climate change debate earlier in the campaign after the Prime Minister declined to take part.

Former environment secretary Michael Gove offered to appear on the programme instead of Mr Johnson, and even turned up at the studio, but Channel 4 refused, saying it was only for leaders.

The Tories have complained to media regulator Ofcom about the 'partisan stunt' by the channel.

Conservative sources later threatened that Channel 4's public service broadcasting obligations would be reviewed if they win the election.

In lots of ways this is a complicated election.

Derbyshire is not the same as Dundee, Birmingham is not the same as Bangor.

Westminster sure isn't the same as Widnes - and London, maybe above all else, isn't the same as Linlithgow, Leeds or Ludlow.

There are a multitude of contenders as well - not just the traditional parties, but the SNP and Plaid Cymru, the Brexit Party, what remains of the Independent Group for Change, moveable tribes of party defectors and a clutch of independents as well.

But as we enter the last seven days of this election, in our first-past-the-post system, whether you believe it is the best or the worst of all worlds, the choice irrevocably, and inevitably perhaps, moves towards the two big teams - the reds and the blues, and the two big, flawed, characters of Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn.

At the start of this campaign we talked here about how, in a strange way, they are an odd couple who share some traits.

And on the trail that has been shown, again and again, to be the case.

Kid gloves
Boris Johnson fascinates some people, who are desperate to shake his hand, eager as children when there are free sweets on offer.

But for others he is simply not someone they can trust, who they may even back, but will fill in their ballots wearing kid gloves.

As one voter in Cardiff told me last week, she had backed Labour all her life, but then had voted Leave, so will now back Boris Johnson, having flirted with the idea of voting for the Brexit Party.

She had this parting shot: "I hope he's not lying."

Boris Johnson delivers a speech to factory workers in the Midlands
None of our campaign journeys have provided scientific evidence of the Conservatives cruising to an enthusiastic majority.

Seeing Jeremy Corbyn on the trail, there is no doubting how much the party members who turn up to Labour's organised election events believe in him.

Core messages
They talk of "the movement", of big change coming. He is greeted by smaller crowds, perhaps, than in 2017, but by big Labour audiences nonetheless, delighted to see him and sing along to the now-familiar, "Oh Jeremy Corbyn" chorus.

But Labour candidates talk privately, again and again, of how his perceived unpopularity among many traditional voters is the block to a Labour majority.

But the enthusiasm for Boris Johnson, where it exists, is more jaded than during the referendum of 2016.

Likewise, the delight at Jeremy Corbyn is dimmed compared with the crowds that we saw greet him in 2017.

Image copyrightPA MEDIA
Image caption
Jeremy Corbyn at a Labour rally in Birmingham
One man today told me, with tears gathering in the corner of his eyes, that he was so cross about this election because he believed that it had to happen because politicians have made such a mess of the last few years, and obviously upset that the choices were limited in his view, to a decision between two men, neither of whom he trusts.

As we enter the final week of this campaign though, we will see from the two main protagonists a repetition of their core messages, rather than a grand invitation to inspire.

Public spending squeeze
For the Tories that will be - yes, you guessed it - to resolve Brexit, to remove the biggest question mark that's been hanging over British politics for three years now.

Not, of course, what the world will look like after the trade deal that could be done with Brussels (or not) - but whether we actually leave or not.

And for Labour, it will be punching at the bruises that nearly a decade of a squeeze on public spending has created.

There are of course many other issues that might and will raise their heads in the time that's left.

It's of course extremely hard to read how the national polls and sentiment on the ground will translate into the final numbers.

But - unless something very strange happens in the next seven days - those pretty stable party positions are likely to result in the Conservatives being the biggest party, but not necessarily clearing the hurdle that will see them returning to government with a majority.

And unlike the deeply dramatic election and referendum campaigns we have seen in the past few years, perhaps - just whisper it - in the run-up to this particular polling day, nothing has changed.

The first victim died in Clarence Mews, Hackney, on Thursday afternoon
Three men have been stabbed to death in London in little over 12 hours.

A man in his 20s was attacked in Hackney, east London, on Thursday afternoon. A 14-year-old boy and a 26-year-old man have been arrested.

Overnight, a man was found fatally wounded in Knightsbridge, central London, while another victim was killed in Deptford, south-east London.

The deaths mean 136 murder investigations have been launched in the capital this year.

It is the same amount as during the whole of 2018.

The victim who was killed in Knightsbridge was found unconscious just after midnight after police had been called over reports of a stabbing.

He was treated by paramedics but pronounced dead at the scene at 00:39 GMT.

Another man was found injured and taken to hospital "in a serious condition", police said.

Emergency services were also called to Bronze Street, Deptford, at 03:00 GMT after a man was fatally stabbed.

No arrests have been made over either of the killings overnight and the Met have appealed for witnesses.

Detectives believe the victim killed in Clarence Mews, Hackney, on Thursday died following "an altercation involving a group of people".

The two people arrested on suspicion of murder remain in custody but the Met said "at least two other suspects remain outstanding" and inquiries to locate them are "ongoing"

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/dec/01/khan-attack-will-put-sentencing-and-release-of-terrorists-under-scrutiny

“Usman Khan was freed. Then he went on a killing spree. How did this happen?,” by Jamie Doward, The Observer, December 1, 2019:

That Usman Khan killed two people having been released from prison under licence for terrorist offences has raised a flurry of urgent questions concerning public safety and prisoner supervision.

The most pressing is why Khan, who was jailed in 2012 for his part in an al-Qaida-inspired plot to bomb high-profile locations and build a terrorist training camp in Pakistan, was freed in the first place…..

The Observer understands that although Khan was not considered high risk, he was seen by probation twice a week. There was nothing in his pattern of behaviour prior to the attacks that suggested his risk profile had changed. As is mandatory for convicted terrorists, he was on the government’s Desistance and Disengagement deradicalisation programme and was attending a conference on prisoner rehabilitation, organised by the University of Cambridge, when he is alleged to have stabbed two people to death.

The conference, held at London’s Fishmongers’ Hall, was to celebrate five years of the Learning Together initiative, and was an invitation-only event.

Founded by two academics, Drs Amy Ludlow and Ruth Armstrong, the initiative has been widely praised by penal reformers.

“They wanted to get academics out of ivory towers,” said one justice campaigner who asked not to be named. “They wanted prisoners and criminologists to sit together in the classroom and learn together.” An American idea, it has now spread across the UK, with many prisons teaming up with universities.

“It would be a tragedy if what has happened has an impact on the initiative,” the campaigner said. “Maybe 98% of those who attend benefit from it. Remember, some of those who chased him down were ex-offenders who’d been at the same conference.”

Why Khan appears to have been beyond rehabilitation will now be the subject of intense scrutiny.

His radicalism dates back to at least 2006 when he would engage in street activism, preaching against homosexuality. In 2008 his Staffordshire home was raided by police who suspected him of trying to brainwash vulnerable members of his community. His views, it seems, were deep and stubborn.

Nigel Farage voiced fury today as he faced a Brexit Party mutiny today with four MEPs set to quit and urge voters to back Boris Johnson at the election.

The dramatic resignations are set to be announced with just a week to go before polling day - and just before Mr Farage records a high-profile interview with the BBC's Andrew Neil.

Party sources told MailOnline they expected John Longworth, the former British Chambers of Commerce chief, to deliver the blow alongside Annunziata Rees-Mogg.

Lance Forman and Lucy Harris are also set to resign, although all four will continue to sit as independent MEPs. Mr Longworth had the whip removed yesterday for allegedly voting in favour of Mr Johnson's divorce package in the European Parliament.

Mr Farage said he was 'disappointed' and dismissed the idea that the Brexit Party was risking a Jeremy Corbyn government. A spokesman also pointed to close ties between the rebels and senior Tories - including Ms Rees-Mogg's brother Jacob.

The news will fuel fears of a complete meltdown, with deep splits over whether to go all-out against the Tories on December 12 or endorse the PM's deal with the EU.

Mr Farage said: 'We are disappointed that four of our MEPs don't seem to understand that we both saved the Conservative party from large scale losses to the Liberal Democrats in the South and South West of England but we are also hammering the Labour Leave vote in its traditional heartlands making it much easier for the Conservatives to win many of those seats.

'The only vote on the Leave side that is currently being split is in areas such as Barnsley, the South Wales Valleys, Doncaster and Hartlepool where there is a risk that the Tories will split our vote.'

A Brexit Party spokesman added: 'We also note that one of the MEPs is the sister of a Cabinet Minister, another has a partner who works in the office of the same Cabinet Minister and yet another is a personal friend of both Boris Johnson and Michael Gove.

But he has refused to say which way he cast his ballot on the issue.

Mr Farage dramatically pulled candidates from more than 300 seats that were won by the Conservatives in 2017, saying he did not want to split the Eurosceptic vote and hand victory to Labour.

But he insisted the party will still fight Labour constituencies, arguing they are best placed to win in Leave-leaning Northern heartlands.

Jeremy Corbyn has been caught out claiming he watches the Queen's speech on Christmas Day in the morning - when in fact the annual address is always broadcast in the afternoon.

The Labour leader has a cringe-worthy exchange with ITV's Julie Etchingham in an interview set to air tomorrow night, when the presenter asks if he sits down with his family to watch the annual 3pm address.

He firstly claims: 'It's on the morning, usually we have it on some of the time.'

But Etchingham challenges him, pointing out the speech first airs in the afternoon, causing him to incorrectly suggest that the 3pm airing is a repeat.

Etchingham asks 'So you don't sit down as a family to watch the Queen's speech?' forcing the Labour leader to protests that his family 'doesn't watch television very much on the day'.

He then claims that he likes 'to do a bit of exercise on Christmas morning', leading to Etchingham to once again point out that the speech first airs in the afternoon.

The interviewer finally asks 'You don't watch it do you, Mr Corbyn?' causing him to suggest there is 'lots to do' on the day, including a visit to a local homeless centre.

During the wide-ranging interview, Mr Corbyn also claims that if elected he would give up Chequers, the country house of the Prime Minister in Buckinghamshire.

He points to the fact that the UK is home to 150 billionaires, adding: 'We've still got people sleeping on the streets.'

Mr Corbyn's position echoing the sentiments of shadow chancellor John McDonnell, who said he would let a homeless family move into No11 Downing Street.

During the interview, he also apologises to those who have suffered as a result of his party's delays in dealing with allegations of anti-Semitism.

Julie Etchingham: 'Do you sit down to watch the Queen's speech? Mr Corbyn.'

Jeremy Corbyn: 'It's on the morning, usually we have it on some of the time.'

Julie Etchingham: 'It's not on in the morning. It's at three o'clock in the afternoon.

Jeremy Corbyn: It's when its repeated... in the afternoon.'

Julie Etchingham: 'So you don't sit down as a family to watch the Queen's speech.'

Jeremy Corbyn: 'We don't watch television very much on Christmas Day. Maybe a film in the evening. Erm I'd like to do a bit of exercise on Christmas morning.'

Julie Etchingham: 'You do some exercise on Christmas morning. I don't think the Queen's speech is in the morning.

'It's three o'clock in the afternoon. That's when everybody watches it.'

Jeremy Corbyn: 'Well. Our Christmas is sometimes...'

Julie Etchingham: 'You don't watch it do you, Mr Corbyn.'

Jeremy Corbyn: 'There is lots .. lots to do .. I enjoy the presence of my family and friends around Christmas. Obviously, like everybody else does.

'And, I also visit the homeless shelter, either on Christmas Day, or the day before, to talk to, and listen to people's lives, about how they could be made better with a government that cared for them.'

Justin Trudeau, Emmanuel Macron and Boris Johnson were caught on a hot mic at the Buckingham Palace NATO reception yesterday evening, appearing to gossip about Donald Trump and the length of his impromptu press conferences.

In a clip, the three world leaders seem to be discussing why the French President was late during the London summit, held to mark the alliance's 70th anniversary. Princess Anne also appears to be involved in the discussion but it is unclear if or how she responds.

None of the men mention Trump by name but Trudeau seems to be referring to the US president's talks with the media throughout Tuesday.

Trump spoke at length to reporters in the afternoon after an awkward press conference with Emmanuel Macron, following on from an earlier and equally lengthy chat after a sit-down with NATO president Jens Stoltenberg in the morning.

In the clip, British Prime Minister Johnson asks: 'Is that why you were late?' as he stoops down and chuckles in disbelief, before Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau, swigging from his drink, shoots back: 'He was late because he takes a 40 minute press conference off the top.'

The video then cuts to a later clip, which is without context, and sees Macron pointing furiously before Trudeau adds: 'You just watched his team's jaws drop to the floor.'  He then motions as if his jaw is dropping. However, it is not known if Trump is the focus of that comment as the video has been edited.

The clip was first shared by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Pictures from the event show the Princess Royal talking to Johnson and Trudeau.
The world leaders were all in London Tuesday for a summit to mark the alliance's 70th anniversary.

POTUS had earlier needled Macron about accepting captured ISIS fighters – offering to 'give them to you' - during the  heated and lengthy joint news conference.

Afterwards, he went to Clarence House along with First Lady Melania for tea with Prince Charles and Camilla. The president and his wife arrived 40 minutes late to the meeting - the delay which Trudeau appears to be referencing.

Following a reception with the Queen at Buckingham Palace, Trump and Melania made their way to Downing Street where they were kept waiting for 10 minutes by Boris.

The Prime Minister eventually welcomed the pair inside, but stood over the threshold rather than posing for pictures on the steps as is usually the case - keen to minimise his perceived closeness to Trump during an election where Labour has repeatedly attacked him for it.

The pair then held a sit-down meeting of their own, but again, no cameras were present.

Trump's Macron meeting was one of three bilateral sit-downs where he spoke and fielded questions from reporters for a total of two hours, flooding the media landscape on a week when House Democrats are proceeding with impeachment at home.

The president earlier took a dig at Macron for France and other European nations being reluctant to accept nationals from their own countries who joined the fight alongside ISIS terrorists.

Trump turned to his counterpart and asked: 'Would you like some nice ISIS fighters? I could give them to you.'

The moment came hours after Trump had blasted Macron for previous comments that NATO was suffering 'brain death'.

Macron in an interview had said NATO was suffering 'brain death,' highlighted a split over Turkey, and said the treaty alliance must remained unified.

'You just can't go around making statements like that against NATO. It's very disrespectful,' Trump groused at the start of two days of meeting with world leaders, including Macron.

Trump called it a 'very, very nasty statement to essentially 28, including them, 28 countries' that are part of NATO. He spoke at his first bilateral meeting, with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

'I heard that President Macron said that NATO was brain dead,' Trump said, in a long back-and-forth with reporters. 'I think that is very insulting towards a lot of different forces,' he added.

Trump rapped Macron for his words and ripped the French economy while also brandishing U.S. economic power in a growing trade spat with Paris.

'It's a tough statement though when you make a statement like that,' Trump complained.

'Nobody needs NATO more than France. You just look back over the long period of time,' Trump said. 'Frankly the one that benefits really the least is the United States.'

Donald Trump has said he has 'no thoughts' on the UK General Election on the first day of his NATO visit to London amid rising tensions over US involvement in the NHS and a political row over the London Bridge terror attack.

The US President was probed at a press conference with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg but refused to give anything away and said he 'didn't want to complicate it'.

Trump is in the UK for a NATO summit, but Prime Minister Boris Johnson is keeping his distance, amid nervousness in Tory HQ that he will say something controversial and hurt the PM's campaign.

The US leader said he is 'staying out' of the December 12 election and that he 'thinks Boris will do a good job'.

He denied rumours that the NHS could be on the table in post-Brexit trade talks and said he has 'nothing to do with it' and has 'never even thought about it'.

Asked if he could work with Jeremy Corbyn and Labour government he said he could 'work with anyone', before declaring is a 'fan of Brexit' and that he 'called it the day before'.

Later today, Trump and First Lady Melania will attend a fundraiser in Park Lane and meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

This afternoon he will have tea with Prince Charles and Camilla before a reception for NATO leaders with the Queen at Buckingham Palace and another at Downing Street.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn went all out to 'weaponise' the President's arrival and yesterday by releasing a video blaming Britain's close relationship with the US for the London Bridge terror attacks.

Grilled on if he could work with Corbyn in No10, Trump replied: 'I can work with anybody, I'm a very easy person to work with.'

On the NHS he added: 'We wouldn't want to if you handed it to us on a silver-platter, we want nothing to do with it.'

Ahead of this morning's meeting, PM Mr Johnson appealed for unity among the leaders of the 29 member states - also including Germany's Angela Merkel, Frances Emmanuel Macron and Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdoğan - amid differences over Syria.

The Queen, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall will formally greet NATO leaders at this evening's reception, which marks 70 years of the alliance.

Charles and the Monarch will then join the politicians for a group photograph.

Prince Andrew, who stepped down from public duties after his disastrous Newsnight interview about his association with convicted padeophile Jeffrey Epstein, is also not attending.

The President's arrival yesterday came at the end of a day that saw complaints both main UK political parties have exploited the deadly London Bridge attack.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has been desperately trying to 'weaponise' the Prime Minister's ties to the US president as he tries to overhaul the Tory advantage in the polls.

In an extraordinary campaign video yesterday, he effectively blamed the Special Relationship for the London Bridge terror attack.

The footage showed images including flowers next to the road sign in the capital, with a soundtrack of Mr Corbyn condemning Western aggression for fuelling terrorism and emotional music.

Mr Corbyn tweeted the video along with a message that Mr Johnson should 'stop clinging on to Donald Trump's coat-tails'.

The Labour leader has a long record of opposing US influence throughout 30 years as a relatively obscure Labour backbencher.

He has previously insisted the NATO military alliance should have been scrapped decades ago, dismissed Britain's 'global role', and said nuclear weapons should be unilaterally given up.

Last week MailOnline highlighted a 2014 article by Mr Corbyn's closest aide, Seamus Milne, branding NATO a 'colonial expeditionary force' and calling for US bases in the UK to be closed and personnel sent home.

Last night the Labour leader wrote to Mr Trump demanding that he guarantees the US will not try to push NHS medicine prices up through a post-Brexit trade deal.

But Mr Corbyn is facing questions over leaked trade documents which experts said had hallmarks of a Russian fake news campaign.

He published the 451 pages of unredacted, classified files last week to back up his claims of a Tory plot to sell off the NHS. The documents were dismissed as not showing what he said they did.

And experts yesterday claimed the leak resembled a disinformation campaign uncovered this year which originated in Russia.

Researchers at Oxford and Cardiff universities, the Atlantic Council think-tank and social media analytics firm Graphika said the manner in which the files were first leaked online mirrored a campaign called Secondary Infektion.

Secondary Infektion, uncovered by the Atlantic Council in June, used fabricated or altered documents to spread fake news across at least 30 online platforms. It stemmed from a network of social media accounts which Facebook said 'originated in Russia'.

Experts warned the similarities with the campaign and the manner in which the NHS documents were published could signal foreign interference in Britain's election.

Ben Nimmo, head of investigations at Graphika, said: 'It's on the same set of websites [as Secondary Infektion], it's using the same types of accounts and making the same language errors. It's either the Russian operation or someone trying hard to look like it.'

A Labour spokesman said: 'Neither the UK nor the US government have denied their authenticity. Given what they reveal, it's not surprising that there are attempts to muddy the waters to cover up what has been exposed.'

Writing to Trump, Mr Corbyn said: 'As you will know, the potential impact of any future UK-US trade agreement on our National Health Service and other vital public services is of profound concern to the British public.

'A critical issue in this context is the cost of drugs to our NHS. The cost of patented drugs in the US is approximately 2.5 times higher than in the UK, and the price of the top 20 medicines is 4.8 times higher than in the UK.

'Any increase in the NHS drugs bill would be an unacceptable outcome of US-UK trade negotiations.

Corbyn says terrorists should serve 'significant proportion' of sentences
Jeremy Corbyn is under pressure over his suggestion that convicted terrorists should 'not necessarily' serve their whole prison sentences.

Pressed during a campaign event at London's Finsbury Park station over whether released terror convicts should be reassessed and serve their full sentences, the Labour leader said it is 'quite right to look at every case'.

He said: 'I think terrorists should be sentenced, as they are, and they should be released as and when they have completed a significant proportion of their sentence and they've undergone rehabilitation and they are considered safe to the public as a whole.

'I do think that continuing with the process allows people to be released ahead of final complete of their sentence if they've been rehabilitated and they have been suitably assessed and they are very strictly monitored when they come out - I think that must be the correct way of doing things.

'There are enormous questions to be learned from this terrible event that happened last week and that is, what happened in the prison with this particular individual, what assessment was made of his psychological condition before he was released and also what supervision and monitoring he was under after coming out?'

'Yet you have given a number of clear and worrying indications that this is exactly what you hope to achieve.'

He told Trump it would 'go a long way to reassuring the British public' if he rowed back from the NHS-related negotiation aims seen in the leaked civil service paper on the UK-US talks.

Mr Corbyn sent a letter with similar demands to the Prime Minister on Monday, the eve of the NATO summit.

Trump has previously claimed it would be 'so bad' for Britain if Mr Corbyn was to become Prime Minister.

The US leader told Nigel Farage's LBC radio programme in October: 'Corbyn would be so bad for your country, he'd be so bad, he'd take you on such a bad way. He'd take you into such bad places.'

Meanwhile yesterday Boris Johnson defended launching a crackdown on the treatment of convicted terrorists after the rampage by 28-year-old Usman Khan, who was out of prison on licence.

Former University of Cambridge students Saskia Jones, 23, and Jack Merritt, 25, were fatally stabbed during a prisoner rehabilitation event on Friday.

Khan was on licence and wearing an electronic monitoring tag when he launched the attack, which injured three others, after he was invited to the prisoner rehabilitation conference on Friday afternoon.

The event was organised held by Learning Together, a programme associated with Cambridge University's Institute of Criminology.

Speaking to reporters in Southampton yesterday, the PM rejected the idea that his action was a knee-jerk response.

'Look at my 2012 manifesto on crime ... I've campaigned for a long time for longer sentences for serious and violent offenders,' he said.

Mr Johnson said it was 'probably clear from the outset' that Khan was 'too tough to crack' when it came to rehabilitation.

'What I'm saying is our job is to keep the public safe and that's what we want to do,' he added.

Meanwhile demonstrations are planned at Buckingham Palace today to coincide with the reception for Mr Trump and other world leaders in the grand State Rooms.

Among the protesters will be NHS nurses, doctors and workers campaigning over potential risks to the NHS from a future US-UK trade deal.

President's itinerary for three-day UK visit
Today : Mr Trump will attend a reception at Buckingham Palace with the Queen to welcome Nato leaders

Tomorrow : Nato summit takes place at the Grove Hotel, near Watford

Nick Dearden, from Global Justice Now, said: 'Tuesday's demonstration will be led by nurses and doctors - to symbolise the millions of people who will stand up for our health service against a US president who simply represents the biggest, greediest corporate interests in the world.'

Stand Up To Trump, Stop the War Coalition and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) will be among the groups taking part.

Lindsey German, from Stop the War Coalition, said: 'We need an alternative to war, militarism and racism - an anti-war government and a mass demonstration against Trump and Nato.'

CND general secretary Kate Hudson described Nato as 'a hugely dangerous and destructive nuclear-armed alliance with the capacity to destroy all forms of life many times over'.

She added: 'This is no time to celebrate and welcome it to London.'

The huge bang that sounded like an explosion and shook homes across London was a sonic boom caused by RAF planes, police have confirmed.
Thousands of people across the capital and the Home Counties were woken by what sounded like a 'large 'explosion' in early hours of Sunday morning.
The bang was heard at about 4.20am local time, rocking homes, setting off car alarms and sparking panic.
The Metropolitan Police reassured people when it revealed the bang was caused by RAF planes which were scrambled to intercept an aeroplane flying over the city that lost communications with air traffic control.
'The loud bang heard throughout north London and surrounding areas was the result of a sonic boom from RAF planes,' it tweeted. 'There is no cause for concern.'

It is believed two Eurofighter Typhoons taking off from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire were the source of the sonic boom. The boom could be heard as far south as Brighton
According to technologist Alp Toker, a Boeing 767-300 from Tel Aviv lost contact with air traffic control at 3.50am, and 10 minutes later at 4am, RAF Coningsby scrambled Typhoons to meet it.

France shuts down 15 mosques linked to jihad-terror in 15 neighborhoods
By Pamela Geller - on November 18, 2019
FRANCE
The problem, of course, is that Islamic texts and teachings, the Quran promotes jihad terror, Jew-hatred, honor violence, wife beating, gender apartheid, creed apartheid, slavery, etc.

FRANCE SHUTS DOWN MOSQUES AND SCHOOLS LINKED TO ISLAMISM IN 15 NEIGHBOURHOODS
Chris Tomlinson, Breitbart, 17 Nov 2019:

THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT HAS SHUT DOWN MOSQUES, SCHOOLS, AND ASSOCIATIONS LINKED TO THE SPREAD OF ISLAMIST IDEOLOGY IN FIFTEEN NEIGHBOURHOODS ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
French Secretary of State for the Interior Laurent Nuñez announced the closure of 130 drinking establishments, 12 places of worship, three schools, and nine associations linked to radical Islamism on Friday, Le Parisien reports.

“We fight against political Islamism that suggests that the law of God is superior to that of the Republic,” he told French media. He added that in his view political Islamism should not be conflated with the religion of Islam more generally.

While Nuñez noted that the closures occurred in fifteen different neighbourhoods, he did not identify which specific neighbourhoods were affected by the closures. The closures come as part of the National Plan for the Prevention of Radicalization (PNPR).

Earlier this yea# rin April, French president Emmanuel Macron promised to tackle the issue of political Islam in the second part of his five-year term, saying, “Secularism is the possibility of believing in God or not believing in Him… of never imposing on society a religion or detracting from rules of the Republic to do this.”

“When we talk about secularism, we do not really speak of secularism, we talk about the communitarianism that has settled in some quarters, of a political Islam that wants to secede from our Republic,” he added.

Radical Islamic ideologies, such as Salafism, are rampant in Islamic intellectual circles in France, according to French-Tunisian Islam expert Hakim el Karoui of the Montaigne Institute, who produced a report for the French president last year.

Mr el Karoui also highlighted the growth of foreign influence from countries like Turkey and Saudi Arabia, who he claimed fund mosques and imams who promote more fundamentalist and radical strains of the religion.

Joseph McDonagh, 31, was jailed for 16 years at Manchester Crown Court after being found guilty of raping a young teenage girl

A 'violent and manipulative' bully has been jailed for 16 years for raping a young teenage girl describing his vile act as 'sex education'.

Joseph McDonagh, 31, of Manchester, was given an extended sentence after being declared dangerous by a judge.

Sentencing, Judge Hilary Manley also hit out at police, saying it was 'little short of a further abuse' of the girl that she was spoken to about her ordeal by a male officer.

The judge said it was 'incomprehensible' the girl was 'expected to recount, in intimate detail and over a period of close to two-and-a-half hours, the details, to a male police officer'.

'It was little short of a further abuse of her, and she made it clear at trial in her evidence that she had found the experience unbearably uncomfortable,' the judge added.

The judge also said the fact that the girl had to wait more than two years for justice to be served represented a 'sad decline in the ability of the criminal justice system to protect and serve victims'.

Manchester Crown Court heard that McDonagh, from Cheetham Hill, subjected his victim to the horrendous ordeal for more than two hours.

Fuelled by cocaine and alcohol, McDonagh assaulted her, called her a 'slag' and threatened her with further violence unless she complied with his demands.

'You told her that what you were doing to was 'sex education',' Judge Manley said.

The girl suffered scratches and a cut lip during the attack.

The judge added: 'The emotional scars will take much longer to heal. She described that she felt as though you treated her like a 'thing', an object.'

Her ordeal has had a 'profound' impact.

The court heard she had been left 'feeling sad most of the time', and that she feels 'guilty if she ever feels happy'.

She took an overdose following the attack, the court was told. McDonagh 'lied and lied again' after raping the girl, the judge said, and he continues to deny any wrongdoing.

Judge Manley described him as a 'violent and manipulative bully'.

'Having observed you throughout the trial, I have reached the firm conclusion that you are a manipulative man, filled with anger.'

A highly decorated Metropolitan Police officer tipped to be the force's first black commissioner has today been found guilty of possessing an indecent video of a child.

Acting Chief Superintendent Novlett Robyn Williams, 54, made a 'serious error of judgment' after she was sent the 'disgusting and disturbing' clip by her sister, social worker Jennifer Hodge.

Williams was one of 17 people to be sent the video on WhatsApp - which lasted less than a minute - by Hodge, 56, who had received it from her partner, bus driver Dido Massivi, 61, in February last year.

Prosecutors claimed Williams, of south London, knew from the thumbnail of the clip what had been sent to her and she had a duty to delete it and report her sister.

Williams said the video, involving a five-year-old girl, escaped her attention because she was at a dance class when it was sent.

The officer swayed in the dock today as she was convicted by a jury at the Old Bailey of possession of an indecent photograph by a majority of 10 to one.

One jury member had left the panel during the trial for personal reasons.

Williams was cleared of corrupt or improper exercise of police powers and privileges by a constable.

Social worker Hodge, 56, of Brent in north-west London, was found guilty of distributing an indecent image of a child.

Her boyfriend Massivi was convicted of two counts of distributing an indecent photograph of a child, and one count of possessing an extreme pornographic image portraying a person having sex with a horse.

The Common Serjeant of London, Richard Marks QC will sentence them all next week.

Williams, 54, from south London, denied ever seeing the video, which was sent to her via WhatsApp by her sister, co-defendant Jennifer Hodge (right outside the Old Bailey today), in February 2018. Hodge's long-term boyfriend, bus driver Dido Massivi (left outside the Old Bailey today), was also convicted +4

Williams, who had been tipped as Scotland Yard's first black commissioner, will now also face a disciplinary hearing which could see her thrown out of the force.

She won the Queen's Police Medal along with dozens of awards for her service following tragedies including the Grenfell Tower fire.

She also won a Diamond Jubilee Award and Queen's Police Medal for tackling gang violence in Nottingham.

Former Home Secretary Jack Straw praised the officer for raising the profile of black officers in the force in 1997.

She was honoured by the Queen for her senior role during the 2011 London riots and again for helping Grenfell victims after the towerblock inferno which claimed 72 lives in 2017.

Richard Wright prosecuting said it was a 'sad case' of poor decision making rather than malice.'

Massivi had forwarded the video to his partner who in turn had sent it on Whatsapp to Williams and 16 others.

Mr Wright added: 'This was a video that all right-minded people would find disturbing and disgusting.

'The person who should have reported it and taken immediate steps to do so was Miss Williams the sister of Jennifer Hodge.

'We say the defendant Ms Williams failed to act because she knew that to do so would place her sister and her sister's partner at risk of arrest and a criminal investigation.

'These are not bad people. Regrettably however, they have all made very bad judgements and in so doing we say they have broken the law.

'As you would rightly expect the law applies to all of us in exactly the same way, regardless of who we are, what job we do, or how out of character our lapses of judgement might be.

'Novlett Robyn Williams is a serving police officer who holds the permanent rank of Superintendent and was acting up as a Chief Superintendent at the time we are concerned with in 2018.

'She received her video from her sister Jennifer Hodge and did not report it or otherwise take steps to deal with it.

'As an experienced officer of high standing we say she knew full well what was expected of her and moreover that there was an urgent child welfare need to report the video as soon as she saw it.

'It would have been clear, by which I mean not blurred, and we say it would have been immediately obvious what it was; an indecent video of a child.'

Hodge forwarded the video to 17 other people and tried to claim during the trial she was only attempting to report the video to the police.

One of her colleagues was 'appalled' by what she saw and immediately reported it to the police who soon arrested Hodge and Massivi.

When she was being arrested Hodge said: 'My sister is a Chief Inspector so I will call her because first of all you've pushed the door in.'

Giving evidence Williams said she would 'absolutely never' let a family relationship stop her from reporting a crime.

She cited two incidents when she was off-duty and acted to protect a child from harm while arguing she would never have ignored the video.

Asked whether she would have reported the video had she seen it, Williams said: 'If I'd have seen anything remotely like that I simply, simply would have picked up my phone, rung my inspector and asked how the best way was to get this evidence into the chain of action so we could absolutely safeguard and protect this child if the act is what you've described.'

Giving evidence Hodge accepted she should have deleted the video and reported it to police rather than forwarding to people who would have found it upsetting.

She defended her 'upstanding' sister and said she simply wouldn't have seen the film.

Hodge added: 'She doesn't do WhatsApp'.

In a fiery exchange with the prosecutor during her evidence Hodge wept and shouted: 'Why would I send a video to so many people if it was a criminal offence?'

'I've never been in trouble in my life.

'Why would I do that? Why would I send that video?'

Massivi claimed he received the video on February 2 last year and sent it to his wife because he wanted her to report it.

He told jurors he tried to show it to her but she said she was busy doing coursework and asked to be sent it electronically.

Massivi said: 'I said to her Jennifer I have received a video of someone abusing a child. She said: 'Okay, I am busy, send it on my mobile'.

'She said: "Send it to me and I am going to look at it". I deleted it when I sent it to her.'

Massivi said he was driving a bus on Saturday, February 3 when Hodge looked at the sickening clip.

He told jurors: 'She said, "I saw the video and it is very bad and I am going to speak to Robyn".

'She wanted justice. She wanted to report it. I know that the video was somebody abusing a child. The first person I wanted to show was my partner.

'I lived with Jennifer that is why I sent it to her.'

Supt Williams, of south London, denied but was convicted of one count of possession of an indecent photograph of a child.

She denied and was cleared of one charge of corrupt or improper exercise of police powers and privileges by a constable.

Hodge, of Willesden, northwest London, denied but was convicted of one count of distributing an indecent photograph of a child.

Massivi denied but was convicted of two counts of distributing an indecent photograph of a child and possession of extreme porn.

Williams, Hodge and Massivi were bailed ahead of sentence on November 26.

ISIS SUPPORTERS CALL FOR POISONING OF FOOD IN GROCERY STORES ACROSS U.S. AND EUROPE

The Islamic State militant group (ISIS) and its followers have traditionally used shock and awe tactics in their attacks on the West, taking knives, assault rifles and trucks on as weapons in shocking assaults. But the group's followers are now calling for a hidden weapon: poison. The target? Western grocery stores.

"In the third part of an English-language series promoting lone-wolf jihad in Western countries, potential attackers are advised to inject food for sale in markets with cyanide poison," U.S.-based jihadi monitoring group SITE Intelligence reported.

A graphic posted by the ISIS supporters in the Furat Wilayah channel on the encrypted messaging app Telegram, a platform popular with jihadists because of its secrecy and lack of takedowns compared to other platforms such as Twitter, read: "First method: poison."

The potential use of poison is one that has been publicized by the group's supporters for several years, but never used. Jihadists published a guide that directed "six ways to kill the Jews" in October 2015, the methods given were to "stab him, burn him, poison him." They have also distributed a guide on how to poison food eaten by "crusaders." Pro-ISIS groups have also published handbooks on how to make homemade poison.

Even though it has yet to be used, one U.S. case points to a jihadist attempting to follow the orders of the group and its followers. Police charged Amer Sinan Alhaggagi, a 22-year-old man from San Francisco, who spent time in Yemen. He is alleged to have tried to support ISIS, but also to "redefine terror" in the Bay Area.

In his December 2016 court hearing, details emerged that he had discussed lacing drugs with rat poison and distributing them in nightclubs across the Bay Area. He had sought information from an undercover agent about mixing highly-toxic pesticide strychnine and cocaine, according to ABC.

It was also reported in July that a Lebanese suspect detained over a plot to bring down an airliner from Australia to the United Arab Emirates, directed by ISIS, had planned to release a poison gas to incapacitate the passengers and crew of the aircraft.

The suspect abandoned the plot before boarding the plane because his bag weighed several kilograms more than the weight limit for hand luggage to board the flight. The alleged poison gas plot represented a new threat to aviation security.

The jihadist group has killed dozens of Westerners in attacks across the U.S. and Europe, the deadliest being the Paris attacks in November 2015, that left 130 people dead, the truck attack in the southern French city of Nice, that killed 86 people, and the shooting attack at a LGBT nightclub in Orlando that killed 49 people.
But in Iraq, the group has gone further, testing poisons on prisoners in experiments likened to those carried out during the Nazi era. Iraqi special forces reportedly discovered papers at Mosul University that documented the group's use of "human guinea pigs" to test chemical agents. British and U.S. forces verified the documents, according to The Times.
