Matthew 16

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees
5When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread.

6Jesus said to them, "Watch and(J) beware of(K) the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

7And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, "We brought no bread."

8But(L) Jesus, aware of this, said, (M) "O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread?

9(N) Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember(O) the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered?

10 Or(P) the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered?

11How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread?(Q) Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

12(R) Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of(S) the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand
32(AU) Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, (AV) "I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way."

33And the disciples said to him, "Where are we to get enough bread in such a desolate place to feed so great a crowd?"

34And Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" They said,(AW) "Seven, and a few small fish."

35And directing the crowd to sit down on the ground,

36he took the seven loaves and the fish, and(AX) having given thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.

38Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman

22And behold,(AC) a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying,(AD) "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon."

23But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying,(AE) "Send her away, for she is crying out after us."

24He answered, (AF) "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."

25But she came and(AG) knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me."

What Defiles a Person
10And he called the people to him and said to them, (L) "Hear and understand:

11(M) it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person."

12Then the disciples came and said to him, "Do you know that the Pharisees were(N) offended when they heard this saying?"

13He answered, (O) "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted(P) will be rooted up.

14Let them alone;(Q) they are blind guides.[c] And(R) if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit."

15But Peter said to him,(S) "Explain the parable to us."

16And he said, (T) "Are you also still without understanding?

17Do you not see that(U) whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled?[d]

18But(V) what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.

19For out of the heart come(W) evil thoughts,(X) murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness,(Y) slander.

Traditions and Commandments

3He answered them, "And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?

4For God commanded,(F) 'Honor your father and your mother,' and,(G) 'Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.'

5But you say, 'If anyone tells his father or his mother, "What you would have gained from me is given to God,"[a]

6he need not honor his father.' So for the sake of your tradition you have(H) made void the word[b] of God.

7(I) You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:

8(J) "'This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me;

Jesus Walks on the Water

15Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a desolate place, and the day is now over;(M) send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves."

16But Jesus said, "They need not go away;(N) you give them something to eat." 17They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish."

18And he said, "Bring them here to me."

19Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish,(O) he looked up to heaven and(P) said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

56And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?"

The Parable of the Sower Explained
18(X) "Hear then the parable of the sower:

19When anyone hears the word of(Y) the kingdom and(Z) does not understand it,(AA) the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path.

20As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately(AB) receives it with joy,

21yet he has no root in himself, but(AC) endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately(AD) he falls away.[b]

22As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but(AE) the cares of(AF) the world and(AG) the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.

14Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says:
