Matthew 16
The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees
5When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread.
6Jesus said to them, "Watch and(J) beware of(K) the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
7And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, "We brought no bread."
8But(L) Jesus, aware of this, said, (M) "O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread?
9(N) Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember(O) the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered?
10 Or(P) the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered?
11How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread?(Q) Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
12(R) Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of(S) the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Matthew 16
The Pharisees and Sadducees Demand Signs
1(A) And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and(B) to test him(C) they asked him to show them(D) a sign from heaven.
2He answered them,[a] (E) "When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.'
3And in the morning, 'It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.'(F) You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret(G) the signs of the times.
4(H) An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah." So(I) he left them and departed.

Matthew 15
Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand
32(AU) Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, (AV) "I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way."
33And the disciples said to him, "Where are we to get enough bread in such a desolate place to feed so great a crowd?"
34And Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" They said,(AW) "Seven, and a few small fish."
35And directing the crowd to sit down on the ground,
36he took the seven loaves and the fish, and(AX) having given thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.
37And(AY) they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces left over.
38Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.
39And after sending away the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of(AZ) Magadan.

Matthew 15
The Faith of a Canaanite Woman
21(AB) And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon.
22And behold,(AC) a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying,(AD) "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon."
23But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying,(AE) "Send her away, for she is crying out after us."
24He answered, (AF) "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."
25But she came and(AG) knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me."
26And he answered, "It is not right to take the children’s bread and(AH) throw it to the dogs."
27She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat(AI) the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table."
28Then Jesus answered her, "O woman,(AJ) great is your faith!(AK) Be it done for you as you desire."(AL) And her daughter was healed instantly.[e]

Matthew 15
What Defiles a Person
10And he called the people to him and said to them, (L) "Hear and understand:
11(M) it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person."
12Then the disciples came and said to him, "Do you know that the Pharisees were(N) offended when they heard this saying?"
13He answered, (O) "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted(P) will be rooted up.
14Let them alone;(Q) they are blind guides.[c] And(R) if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit."
15But Peter said to him,(S) "Explain the parable to us."
16And he said, (T) "Are you also still without understanding?
17Do you not see that(U) whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled?[d]
18But(V) what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.
19For out of the heart come(W) evil thoughts,(X) murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness,(Y) slander.
20(Z) These are what defile a person. But(AA) to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone."

Matthew 15
Traditions and Commandments
1(A) Then Pharisees and(B) scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,
2(C) "Why do your disciples break(D) the tradition of the elders?(E) For they do not wash their hands when they eat."
3He answered them, "And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?
4For God commanded,(F) 'Honor your father and your mother,' and,(G) 'Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.'
5But you say, 'If anyone tells his father or his mother, "What you would have gained from me is given to God,"[a]
6he need not honor his father.' So for the sake of your tradition you have(H) made void the word[b] of God.
7(I) You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:
8(J) "'This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me;
9in vain do they worship me,
teaching as(K) doctrines the commandments of men.'"

Matthew 14
Jesus Walks on the Water
22(Q) Immediately he(R) made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.
23And after he had dismissed the crowds,(S) he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When(T) evening came, he was there alone,
24but the boat by this time was a long way[b] from the land,[c] beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them.
25And(U) in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea.
26But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea,(V) they were terrified, and said, "It is a ghost!" and they cried out in fear.
27But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, (W) "Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid."
28And Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water."
29He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and(X) walked on the water and came to Jesus.
30But when he saw the wind,[d] he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out,(Y) "Lord, save me."
31Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, (Z) "O you of little faith, why did you(AA) doubt?"
32And when they got into the boat,(AB) the wind ceased.
33And(AC) those in the boat(AD) worshiped him, saying,(AE) "Truly you are(AF) the Son of God."

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
13Now when Jesus heard this,(K) he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns.
14When he went ashore he(L) saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
15Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a desolate place, and the day is now over;(M) send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves."
16But Jesus said, "They need not go away;(N) you give them something to eat." 17They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish."
18And he said, "Bring them here to me."
19Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish,(O) he looked up to heaven and(P) said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.
20And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over.
21And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

54(CC) and coming to(CD) his hometown(CE) he taught them in their synagogue, so that(CF) they were astonished, and said, "Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works?
55(CG) Is not this(CH) the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not(CI) his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?
56And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?"
57And(CJ) they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, (CK) "A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household." 58And he did not do many mighty works there,(CL) because of their unbelief.

The Parable of the Weeds Explained
36Then he left the crowds and went into(AW) the house. And his disciples came to him, saying,(AX) "Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field."
37He answered, "The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man.
38The field is the world, and the good seed is(AY) the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are(AZ) the sons of the evil one,
39and the enemy who sowed them is the devil.(BA) The harvest is(BB) the close of the age, and the reapers are angels.

The Parable of the Weeds
24He put another parable before them, saying, (AK) "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field,
25but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds[c] among the wheat and went away.
26So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also.
27And the servants[d] of the master of the house came and said to him, 'Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?'
28He said to them, 'An enemy has done this.' So the servants said to him, 'Then do you want us to go and gather them?'
29But he said,(AL) 'No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them.
30Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers,(AM) Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.'"

The Parable of the Sower Explained
18(X) "Hear then the parable of the sower:
19When anyone hears the word of(Y) the kingdom and(Z) does not understand it,(AA) the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path.
20As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately(AB) receives it with joy,
21yet he has no root in himself, but(AC) endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately(AD) he falls away.[b]
22As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but(AE) the cares of(AF) the world and(AG) the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.
23As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and(AH) understands it. He indeed(AI) bears fruit and yields, in one case(AJ) a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty."

Matthew 13
The Purpose of the Parables
10Then the disciples came and said to him, "Why do you speak to them in parables?"
11And he answered them, (J) "To you it has been given to know(K) the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.
12(L) For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not,(M) even what he has will be taken away.
13This is why I speak to them in parables, because(N) seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear,(O) nor do they understand.
14Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says:
(P) "'You will indeed hear but never understand,
and you will indeed see but never perceive.
15For this people’s heart has grown dull,
and with their ears(Q) they can barely hear,
and(R) their eyes they have closed,
lest they should see with their eyes
and hear with their ears
and(S) understand with their heart
and(T) turn, and I would heal them.'
16But(U) blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.
17(V) For truly, I say to you,(W) many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.

The Parable of the Sower
1That same day Jesus went out of the house(A) and sat beside the sea.
2And great crowds gathered about him,(B) so that he got into a boat and sat down. And the whole crowd stood on the beach.
3And(C) he told them many things in parables, saying: (D) "A sower went out to sow.
4And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them.
5Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil,
6but(E) when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root,(F) they withered away.
7Other seeds fell among(G) thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them.
8Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some(H) a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

Matthew 12
Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit
22(AA) Then a demon-oppressed man who was blind and mute was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the man spoke and saw.
23(AB) And all the people were amazed, and said, "Can this be the Son of David?"
24But when the Pharisees heard it, they said,(AC) "It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons."
25(AD) Knowing their thoughts,(AE) he said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand.
26And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand?
27And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul,(AF) by whom do(AG) your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.
28But if it is(AH) by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then(AI) the kingdom of God has come upon you.
29Or(AJ) how can someone enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? Then indeed(AK) he may plunder his house.
30(AL) Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
31(AM) Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but(AN) the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.
32And whoever speaks a word(AO) against the Son of Man(AP) will be forgiven, but(AQ) whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in(AR) this age or in the age to come.

A Man with a Withered Hand
9He went on from there and(L) entered their synagogue.
10And a man was there with a withered hand. And they asked him,(M) "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?"—(N) so that they might accuse him.
11He said to them, "Which one of you who has a sheep,(O) if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not take hold of it and lift it out?
12(P) Of how much more value is a man than a sheep! So(Q) it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath."
13Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." And(R) the man stretched it out, and it was restored, healthy like the other.
14But the Pharisees went out and conspired against him, how to destroy him.
