[size=16.363636016845703]Yes, President Barack Hussein Obama should mind his own business, of which there is plenty. He should take care of America’s home front and keep his nose out of Israel’s business. It is ludicrous for a leader with such a shameful record to insist that Israel give up her land for “peace” which, in spite of the rhetoric and empty promises, will not benefit Israel but rather will serve only to create greater opportunities for terrorists to terrorize and the innocent to be victimized.[/size]
[size=16.363636016845703]Instead of pressuring Israel to handover land to the Palestinians under the guise of “peace,” President Obama should be concerned about his own scandals and lies on the issues affecting the American people and the US economy, and by extension, Israel and the Middle East.
A quick Internet search on President Obama’s policies brings up unflattering adjectives and phrases to describe the American president and his administration. The policies I’m talking about are on Benghazi, US Middle East policy, border security, ObamaCare, abortion, hidden taxes, the IRS, jobs, erosion of “free exercise of religion” as per the US Constitution, and now — Obama’s governing style.
Obama’s newest issue is his vow to bypass Congress and rule-by-decree, or fiat. He emphatically stated on January 14th at State of the Union that he would no longer wait for Congress or legislation to impose his will to “fundamentally transform America.” Instead, he intends to expand his rule-by-fiat scheme through an increasing number of anti-constitutional executive orders and actions. One outcome of this lawlessness could involve a possible showdown of historic proportions with lawmakers and an increasingly outraged American public. On Obama’s governance, journalists are saying he is sounding more like a third-world dictator than a US president and are using phrases such as “lawless tyranny.” We give Obama an “F” on governance.
Obama captured the IRS as his weapon of mass destruction to restrict First Amendment free speech of conservatives by stopping opposition messaging and political entities in their tracks and to punish them. The IRS has been targeting and auditing conservative individuals and organizational tax returns, and those of families, friends and associates. The IRS has been systematically harassing Tea Party groups, delaying their tax-exempt status for years. The IRS as intimidator sends various regulatory agencies, such as the EPA and OSHA to conservative businesses. Is there smoking gun proof? Yes. A progressive organization, supported by world financier and world stage meddler George Soros was just identified as having an IRS contract to target smaller groups. On taxation, the IRS is the backbone of money collection to fund ObamaCare and does so with one of the largest tax increases in American history, bringing a whopping $500 billion in over ten years. “Not a smidgen of corruption?” There’s plenty. We give Obama an “F” on the IRS and hidden taxation.
ObamaCare is a whopper. It is killing jobs and business productivity. It captures 6% of the US economy ballooning to possibly 20% considering extended related businesses. Not only are citizens having enrollment difficulties due to a mangled and incompetent rollout website, but Obama has made 27 governing-by-fiat changes to established law. This is flatly unconstitutional. Doctors, patients, insurance companies and hospitals are becoming increasingly anxious, enraged and fearful of their healthcare futures. Through insurance cancellations and elimination of certain drugs, a type of rationing has already kicked in. Obama has broken promises and lost all credibility say the journalists. Liberal constitutional professor/attorney Jonathan Turley reports “shift of gravity” between the three branches of government is occurring “in a very dangerous way that makes the government unstable.” We give Obama an “F” on ObamaCare.
One journalist labels Obama as “the most pro-abortion advocate to ever hold America’s top executive office.” Obama is expanding abortions through ObamaCare and is appointing a bevy of pro-abortion judges and officials. He is moving to strip medical professionals and Catholic institutions of conscience rights. He is forcing taxpayers to fund groups who provide abortions in other countries. U.S. Senator Ted Cruz says Obama “should not be trying to force gay marriage on all 50 states. Imposing a re-definition of marriage from Washington undermines states’ rights as provided under the Tenth Amendment. We give Obama three “Fs” for his stance on Abortion, the “Free Exercise of Religion” and protecting the institution of marriage.
One recent news headline read, “Obama’s Workforce: Discouraged, Disincentivized, Downsized.” The article reports that Americans actually working (workforce participation) is at a 35-year low. Yet, employers can’t fill job openings even with millions out of work. The CBO reports, “Future Shock–Economy Will Struggle.” With businesses closing, shorter working hours, citizens working two or more jobs to make ends meet, we give Obama a big “F” for failing to create a regulatory environment conducive to helping businesses and their ability to create new jobs.
John Kerry putting pressure on Israel and using threats of sanctions and boycotts against Israel is a sure formula for bringing God’s wrath upon America. An eureka moment occurred in the Middle East concerning Israel and other US allies in the region when Obama cancelled his red line over Syria’s use of chemical weapons. He then backed off from a missile attack at Bashar Assad. Obama’s refusal to challenge a mass murderer gave him the label: “backbone filled with jelly.” Russia’s Putin was presented with a gift of leadership. Iran has been given new hope for a nuclear weapon sooner rather than later. And, in Benghazi, overwhelming evidence indicates the attack was a coordinated terrorist operation and that it was known as such at the highest levels of the Obama administration within minutes. The Obama explanation lacks even a smidgen of credibility. Interesting journalistic phrases: Obama’s rhetoric is largely meaningless and his diplomacy is without muscle. Another said that Obama policies display the most pronounced form of weakness. We give Obama an “F” on Benghazi and the Middle East.
Obama’s “Report Card” displays “straight Fs” on Governance, the IRS & Hidden Taxation, ObamaCare, Right to Life, Free Exercise of Religion, the Institution of Marriage, the jobs climate and Israel and his Middle East policy.

It also highlights the ostensible primary cargo carried by the ship, cement and other supplies, some of which is clearly labeled in English “Made in I. R. Iran.” The “Klos-C” had sailed from Iran and was headed to Port Sudan, where the Syrian-made rockets were to be transferred overland to Gaza and Islamic terror group Hamas, Israeli officials said Wednesday. The video also portrays the “Klos-C” being towed to Eilat, escorted by multiple Israeli Navy boats. The ship is to arrive Saturday in Israel for a thorough inspection.[/size]

Behind the Scenes: IDF Mission to Stop Iranian Terror

Israel Navy Commander reports to Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz from the Klos-C, an Iranian vessel that had attempted to transfer a weapons shipment to terrorist organizations in Gaza.
Another video released on Thursday shows behind-the-scenes footage at IDF Central Command as the initial operation to take the ship was underway. The two-minute video briefly reveals the seized ship, and then shifts to IDF headquarters, where an officer from the IDF commando team on-board informs IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon — via video link — that it found weapons from Iran and identified the M-302 rockets. The video shows an unidentified IDF officer relaying information from the field to Central Command. The officer notes that the ship passed through Bandar Abbas, a major Iranian port, and continued to Um Qasr, a port city in Iraq, before being seized by the IDF. “Shayetet-13 commandos uncovered weapons from Iran, a significant amount of weapons. We have positively identified M-302 rockets. We are continuing to search for more weapons,” the officer says. Gantz congratulates the team on their successful operation, and orders them to “start moving to the north” to bring the ship into Israeli waters. The end of the video shows Gantz explaining the operation in greater detail. He notes that the “impressive and professional” operation is not yet over, as the IDF team and the seized vessel have not yet returned to Israel.[/size]

Ukrainian Jews Training to Protect Community

KIEV, Ukraine – The current political crisis in Ukraine has propelled its Jewish community to request emergency training from Israeli emergency response organizations, United Hatzalah and ZAKA.
As the Ukrainian crisis developed during the past three months of anti-government protests, Ukrainian rabbis appealed for help in emergency response training. Rabbi Moshe Reuven Azman, the Ukrainian Chief Rabbi, and Rabbi Hillel Cohen of the Ukrainian Hatzalah made the request to ZAKA Chairman Yehuda Meshi Zahav and United Hatzalah President Eli Beer. The men mobilized their organizations to work together to train the local team in only a matter of days.
United Hatzalah and ZAKA, in cooperation with the Isralife Foundation have worked together to train Jewish volunteers of the local Kiev Hatzalah. The Ukrainian participants received training in the latest emergency, rescue and search techniques in order to respond and provide aid to mass casualty emergencies should the crisis in the country escalate.
The Ukrainian participants have also been trained to provide first aid in mass casualty emergency situations, and include protocols for CPR, treating suffocation, injuries and diseases.

“We were pleased to come to the assistance of the Ukrainian community during their time of need and provide the emergency training their volunteers need to handle local emergencies in an efficient and timely manner,” said Beer. “Both ZAKA and United Hatzalah each offered unique services and perspectives on emergency response and we were happy we could work together to help our fellow Jews.”
“We are grateful to both organizations for responding so quickly and generously to help our community in this time of need. The events surrounding us require our community to be prepared with the latest training and techniques so we can respond to emergencies and help our people quickly in these dangerous times,” said Rabbis Azman and Cohen in a joint statement.
In the Ukraine, much of the Jewish population is located in the country’s capital, Kiev while other sizable communities reside in Lvov, Dnepropetrovsk and Odessa. Since the early 1990s, 340,000 Ukrainian Jews have immigrated to Israel.

Michael Freund, founder and chairman of Israel Returns (Shavei Israel), who has worked with a sector of the Ukrainian Jewish community for years, warns of dire circumstances the Ukrainian Jewish community is now facing.
“A telling sign of the mounting danger facing the Ukrainian Jewish community is the fact that they have begun to undergo training to prepare for emergencies,” Freund said. “With the crisis in the Ukraine likely to intensify in the coming weeks and months, it is essential that we do everything possible to bring Ukrainian Jewry on Aliya to Israel as soon as possible.”
Freund’s organization is working hand in hand with Subbotnik Jews in the Ukraine who seek to move to Israel and better their lives.
“At Shavei Israel, we are working with a few communities of Subbotnik Jews in the Ukraine, and I hope that we will be able to get them to Israel in the near future, before it is too late. I urge Jews and Christians around the world to pray for the safety of Ukrainian Jewry and for their expedited exodus back home to Zion,” Freund stated.
In related news, a Ukrainian man was treated in Israel yesterday, Wednesday, March 5, after suffering severed damage to his left forearm from shrapnel in Kiev’s Independence Square during riots. Referred to as Alexander S., he was the first Ukrainian to arrive to Israel for treatment, following approval by Dr. Valeria Bivitzchik from Rehovot’s Kaplan Medical Center, who recently volunteered with the Ukrainian Red Cross and arranged for injured citizens to be flown to Israel for medical treatment. Alexander was brought to Kaplan Medical Center in Rehovot where he will undergo surgery to reconstruct the bones and repair the soft issue in his arm under the care of hospital’s surgical and orthopedic departments in the coming days.

Earlier this week, firefighters in Jerusalem discovered that gas lines leading into three residential buildings had been severed. At one of the locations, a burning candle was left inside the container that housed the gas line.
After intense investigation, Police now believe the incident was an attempted terror attack. Security services believe the gas lines were cut in attempted sabotage to cause extreme damage and mass casualties.
Israeli Fire and Rescue were able to successfully halt the flow of gas into the buildings located in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Armon Hanatziv. Residents were evacuated from their homes for several hours while gas levels were monitored and the lines were replaced. In total, the lives of over 50 people were saved by the vigilance of Israeli rescue services.[/size]
[size=16.363636016845703]A statement by the Jerusalem District Fire and Rescue Services applauded the efforts of the firefighters.
“Jerusalem firefighters’ rapid response, which placed them at great personal risk, prevented a potentially devastating result,” the statement read.
Mordechai Naor, an evacuated resident of one of the residents, told Arutz Sheva, “I heard noise and went to the window, and saw a crowd of police officers and firefighters. I opened the window and they told me to come outside quickly, that something had happened with the gas.”
“I opened the door. The smell was terrible,” Naor recalled. “I went out, and they told me we needed to evacuate.”
Looking back on the miracle behind the incident, Naor said, “I’ve been living here for twenty years. There are a lot of Arabs who work here, and some who live here. I don’t plan to leave, but I’m praying that things stay quiet.”

According to the IDF Spokesperson’s office, the men approached the border fence in the middle of the night and tried to blow up the border fence. IDF soldiers opened fire on the terrorists, using light weapons and later, firing artillery shells. Direct hits were confirmed.
The IDF identified the Hezbollah militants as belonging to a Lebanese Shi’ite terrorist organization that is closely affiliated with Hezbollah.[/size]

Overnight, Israel arrested a top Hamas operative in Hebron. Wanted for the last 16 years by the IDF, Ayyub al-Qawasmi, 50, is responsible for masterminding numerous terror attacks since the Second Intifada, which began in 2000.
Al-Qawasmi was arrested in a joint operation between the Israel Security Agency and the IDF. A member of Hamas’s Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, al-Qawasmi was arrested by Palestinian security forces three years ago but was released from Palestinian custody two weeks ago. According to the IDF, al-Qawasmi immediately began to plan and coordinate terror activities on behalf of Hamas.[/size]

Four unidentified Arab assailants savagely attacked a Jewish man on a Paris train Sunday. The train was traveling from Nogent Sur Marne to Gare de Lyon, according to reports from the National Bureau for Vigilance Against Anti-Semitism, or BNVCA.
The victim, A. Levy, is a member of the Orthodox Chabad sect. Two of his attackers held him down while a third beat and strangled him. BNVCA reported that he suffered unspecified injuries.
The attackers called him “Jew” in Arabic and one told him, “Jew, we are going to lay into you, you have no country.” The beating ended only when another passenger announced loudly that the police were on their way. The four assailants got off the train at Chatelet-les Halles, while the victim continued to the end of the line, where he filed a police complaint for aggravated assault.[/size]

Alice Herz-Sommer, believed to be the oldest-known Holocaust survivor, died Sunday morning in London at the age of 110, a family member said.[/size]
[size=16.363636016845703]Herz-Sommer recently appeared in an Oscar-nominated documentary, Haaretz.com reported. The film, “The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life,” is nominated for best short documentary at the Academy Awards.[/size]

Jews and Arabs United in Mourning Over Acre Tragedy
Jews and Arabs united in mourning and anger at a packed funeral Monday for victims of a gas explosion at a residential complex in Acre.
Five people – two couples and an eight-year-old-boy – died and 12 others were injured, including three children, in the northern Israeli city of Acre (Akko) early Monday morning following the explosion of a propane tank at the entrance to a residential building. on Monday. Emergency rescue crews continue to search under the debris for missing persons, and police acknowledge the possibility of foul play.
The explosion caused a side of the building to collapse, and an as-yet-unconfirmed number of people have been trapped under the rubble.
The funeral procession, attended by more than 5,000 Jews and Arabs, took place outside the Al-Jazzar mosque in the Old City neighborhood.

“All of the residents of Acre, Jews and Arabs, have united today in mourning over this terrible tragedy,” former Member of Knesset Abbas Zakour stated, according to an Israel National News report. He credited local residents as well as professional medical teams that immediately joined rescue efforts following the explosion.
“Emergency rescue crews, Home Front Command employees and members of the Israel Defense Forces’ elite canine unit worked overnight at the scene and continued to search for survivors,” the daily Ha’aretz reports, adding that a family of four and an unharmed baby had been pulled out.
The cause of the explosion is under investigation, Acre Mayor Shimon Lankri confirmed. Initially, it was assumed to be an accident, but police are now considering the possibility of foul play.

The mayor told Channel 2 TV that the city’s welfare department was trying to find temporary housing for the building’s residents.
Israel National News quoted a police official who confirmed that they “know there was a cellphone antenna on the building, and this had caused a bitter dispute in the neighborhood. It’s possible that this explosion was caused on purpose, with someone setting the gas canister to explode.”
Local police commander Haggai Dotan said that the investigation will be “all-encompassing, including a criminal aspect,” Ynet news site reports, quoting Dotan as saying that there were cellular antennae on the roof and investigators are looking into the connection.
“All the buildings in the Old City of Acre, where the blast occurred, received a request to take down their cellular antennas, but the building that collapsed was the only one that did not do so,” Ynet continues.
Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch said police “would explore every possible lead,” Israel Hayom reports.

Dr. Masaad Barhom, director-general of the Western Galilee Hospital in nearby Nahariya, told reporters that “all of the patients presented wounds consistent with the collapse of a building, and not [from[ a direct exposure to explosives or gas," says Israel Hayom.
"Several nearby buildings sustained severe damage as well," Israel Hayom adds. "As a precaution, the street's residents were evacuated, but most were allowed to return to their homes after several hours."
The victims were identified as Raik and Najah Sarhan and their son 8-year-old son Nasser, and Mohammed and Hanan Badar. Nasser’s 10-year-old sister was lightly injured.
In January, a gas cylinder exploded in a Jerusalem residential building, killing a family of three and injuring 15. A technician had reported fixing a leak shortly before the incident occurred.

Addressing the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed outrage over European companies like Deutsche Bank trying to boycott the Jewish State. “That is something we are re-encountering. In the past, anti-Semites boycotted Jewish businesses and today, they call for the boycott of the Jewish state. I think it’s important that the boycotters must be exposed for what they are — they’re classical anti-Semites in modern garb. And I think we have to fight them.”
Deutsche Bank, the largest bank in Germany, has excluded Bank Hapoalim, one of the top banks in Israel, as part of its “moral investment plan.” Global investors wishing to put their money in funds that only promote growth for companies deemed “ethical” by German standards will not be able to own shares in the Israeli company. Analysts believe it is due to Bank Hapoalim’s involvement in building beyond the Green Line. Construction in Judea and Samaria has been one of the primary sources of employment for Palestinian Arabs, and a source of tax revenue for the Palestinian Authority.
COMPANIES LIKE DEUTSCHE BANK WON’T SUCCEED
According to the Israeli leader, Europe is wasting its time. Technology changes by the hour. Where anybody can get funding from companies other than Deutsche Bank, the innovations of the Israeli high tech industry enable a company to enjoy competitive advantages not available anywhere else. Quoting top international business leaders, the Premiere reasserted an unbreakable demand for “the same three things: Israeli technology, Israeli technology and Israeli technology.”

Motorola, Intel, Microsoft, and Cisco have research facilities in Israel. French company Technicolor and Chinese firm Haier have also announced plans to open research offices in the Jewish State.
NO BOYCOTT FROM THE UNITED STATES
The initiatives of companies like Deutsche Bank are sensitive issues in peace negotiations. American Secretary of State John Kerry is due to present his Middle East peace plan to Jerusalem for consideration. He has hinted that if his plan isn’t accepted, Israel can expect more boycotts from Europe.
American Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro acted to allay those fears by reiterating the American position that, “We have opposed, do oppose and will continue to oppose efforts to delegitimize, boycott Israel.” His statements were made a day after the third largest company in America, Google, purchased Israeli security start up SlickLogin. American companies IBM, EMC, and Lockheed Martin have announced their own intentions to purchase Israeli companies, making Israeli products a part of their business.

PURIM: Turning Sadness into Joy!
P U R I M
The festive holiday of Purim commemorates Israel’s salvation from extermination by the mighty Persian Empire, some 2500 years ago. Jews in Israel and all over the world celebrate Purim on the 14th day of Adar (this year Feb 24th) as a time of “Light, Gladness, Joy and Honor for the Jewish people” (Esther 8:16).
Purim is a classic story of deep-rooted anti-semitism, pitting a powerful ruler (King Ahasuerus) and his vicious, arrogant advisor (Haman) against the Nation of Israel. Plans were drawn up for the “final solution” – wiping the Jews off the face of the earth. The word ”Purim” means lottery – referring to the method used to determine the fateful day set aside for the annihilation of the Jews.
A Complete Turnaround
turnaroundThrough a series of seemingly “random”, coincidental events, a prominent Jewish leader named Mordecai and his young cousin Esther (who was chosen to be the queen), orchestrated a complete turnaround of events resulting in the destruction of Haman and the survival and prosperity of the Jewish nation.
As recorded in the Book of Esther (9:1) “And it was turned around, the Jews prevailed over their enemies”. This day was set aside as a special day of feasting and celebration for the Jewish people.
Why is God’s name hidden?
The Book of Esther is unique in that the name of God does not appear anywhere in the scripture. This was intentional, to teach us a very powerful lesson: All of those “random events” were actually hidden miracles – no less miraculous than the Ten Plagues and the Splitting of the Sea! Although sometimes God appears to be “hidden”, we recognize that He controls world events. Nothing is random.
In fact, Esther’s name in Hebrew means “hidden”, as in “And I will surely hide (“as-thir”) My face on that day… “ (Deuteronomy 31:18). And that is why Jewish children (and adults too!) “hide” their faces by wearing masks and dressing up in all sorts of costumes. The message is clear: God may be hidden but we know that He is there!
How do we celebrate today?
Purim Party
To publicize the miracle, Jews read the “Megillah” (the Book of Esther) all over the world. And since the Jews were saved from physical destruction, the celebration is replete with “physical” activity – eating, drinking, singing and dancing. As expressions of friendship and unity, we “send delicacies to one another and gifts to the poor.” (Esther 9:22).
In every generation there is another Haman – out to destroy the Jewish nation. Whether it’s Hitler or Ahmadinejad – and the list goes on – those who curse Israel are doomed to destruction. And those who bless Israel will forever be blessed… (Genesis 12:3). As God’s exalted nation, Israel will survive and prosper – this is the true celebration of Purim!
Modern Day ‘Hamans’
Today, Israel finds itself surrounded by tens of thousands of modern day “Hamans”, otherwise known as the “freedom fighters” of Hezbollah and Hamas. These groups, along with the evil Iranian regime, open call for the destruction of Israel.
Since its independence in 1948, Israel has suffered from acts of terror in the form of suicide bombings, drive-by shootings, rocket attacks and much more. While thousands of Israelis have been killed, many more victims of terror suffer daily from deep physical and emotional scars. Young children, teenagers and adults who have lost loved ones often suffer in silence.

Explosion in Golan Heights Shows ‘True Face of Iran’

Two mortar shells exploded in the Golan Heights at the Israeli-Syrian border on Tuesday shortly after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had visited the area with Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon and IDF Chief Lieutenant-General Benny Gantz.
No injuries were reported.
The Israeli dignitaries were visiting a field hospital where IDF medics and soldiers risk their lives to treat wounded Syrians caught in the brutal fighting between the Syrian army and the rebels.
“I visited today the base where people who have been wounded in the fighting in Syria are being treated,” Netanyahu said. “On the day when talks between the major powers and Iran are being opened in Vienna, it is important that the world sees the pictures from this place, which divides the good that is in the world from the bad.

“The good part is that Israel is saving the lives of those who have been wounded in the daily slaughter that is being perpetrated in Syria,” he continued. “This is the true face of Israel. The bad part is that Iran is arming those who are carrying out the slaughter. This is the true face of Iran.”
“All of the children who have been injured, to say nothing of those who have been killed, were injured as a result of Iran’s arming, financing and training the Assad regime in the massacres that it is perpetrating,” the Israeli leader stated.

Kerry Demands Partial Israeli Settlement Freeze

Israel’s Army Radio reported that U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is insisting that the Israeli government impose a construction freeze in settlements that fall outside of communities Israeli would keep in any final-status deal with the Palestinians.
Aides to Kerry are arguing that construction freezes would allow negotiations to continue after the April deadline. The Obama administration is requesting the unofficial settlement freeze from Israel as a sign of good faith to the Palestinians.
Israeli officials have yet to respond to the request and the U.S. has held off on pushing Israel for an answer.
According to Army Radio, an unofficial freeze would not require a government edict. However, bureaucratic red tape would be implemented to impede current construction and approval of future projects. Unofficially freezing construction would also allow the government to deny any approval of halting all construction in Israeli settlements.

“The Israeli side is well aware that the framework will not be enough to convince Abu Mazen (Abbas) to remain at the negotiating table without Israel giving him something else,” Army Radio reported.
John Kerry has been hard at work pursuing peace between Israel and the Palestinians. However, peace between the two sides does not appear to be in the near future. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has made it clear that the PA would never recognize Israel as a Jewish state. PA Chief Negotiator Saeb Erekat has admitted proudly that peace negotiations are at a complete standstill.
Army Radio notes that the U.S. State Department has refused to confirm or deny Kerry’s push for a construction freeze. A spokesperson for the department said last week, “At this point, we are focusing on reaching an agreement within the structure of the framework agreement. That is our goal.”
In Paris on Wednesday, Kerry met with Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to discuss reaching an agreement on a framework for peace.
State Department Spokeswoman Jen Psaki said: “We are at an important point in the negotiations where we are engaged with narrowing the gaps between the parties on a framework for negotiations and it was an appropriate time to spend a few hours meeting with President Abbas to talk about the core issues.”

Toppled Islamist Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi was charged with espionage and conducting “terror attacks” in Egypt as a third trial against Morsi is set to begin.
Morsi, who was ousted on July 3, 2013 by the Egyptian military, is facing trial with 35 other people, including former aides, advisors, and leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood. Should they be found guilty, Morsi and all others could face the death penalty.
Among the charges Morsi and his fellow inmates face is that they are accused “of spying for the international organization of the Muslim Brotherhood, its military wing and the Hamas movement.”
In regards to the acts of terror Morsi and his government committed, they are charged with “carrying out terror attacks inside the country against state property, institutions and their employees to spread chaos.”
Morsi, who was president of Egypt for around one year, is in the process of being tried for killing opposition protestors in December 2012. This latest trial is an example of Egypt’s extreme crackdown against the Muslim Brotherhood, which was officially declared a terrorist organization in Egypt. Since Morsi’s ousting, according to Amnesty International, the Egyptian government has killed more than 1,400 radical supporters and arrested thousands more.
Prosecutors are arguing that Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood were planning on sending radical “elements” to the Gaza Strip. There, these individuals were to receive intense military training by Hezbollah and the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. Upon returning to Egypt, these radicals were to join extremist groups operating in the Sinai Peninsula, close to the border of Israel.
The ultimate goal of the Muslim Brotherhood and Morsi was to establish an “Islamic emirate” in Egypt. During his presidency, Morsi dramatically strengthened ties between Egypt and Hamas leaders in the Gaza Strip. Hamas has denied any connection to Morsi’s pan, calling the charges “fabrication and lies.”

During the first week of March, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to visit the United States. On his list of appointments is delivering a keynote address to the annual AIPAC Policy Conference and a meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama. The last time Obama and Netanyahu met was in September 2013, when the prime minister flew to New York to address the UN General Assembly.
The meeting between the two world leaders comes at a precarious time between Israel and the United States. Over the past several years, the relationship between Obama and Netanyahu has been shaky at best. Obama and Netanyahu will most likely discuss the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians as well as the two countries different stances regarding a nuclear Iran.
Netanyahu has consistently objected to the use of diplomacy the Obama administration has favored regarding Iran. The Iranian government purports to use its nuclear program for peaceful purposes. However, Netanyahu and majority of Israeli officials have refused to believe what it perceives as Iranian lies, especially since Iranian leaders have consistently threatened to wipe Israel off the map.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who has made numerous trips to the Mid-East region to broker peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, is perceived by many Israeli officials as running a marathon to nowhere. Several Israeli lawmakers view Kerry’s efforts as “messianic” and “obsessive” and have called Kerry a “mouthpiece” to incitement against Israel. The meeting between the president and prime minister will seek to further enhance peace prospects.
Besides for visiting Washington, DC, the prime minister is expected to visit the West Coast. He will attend a screening of “The Royal Tour,” an international tourism series, in Los Angeles. Netanyahu will also visit Silicon Valley.

Third Intifada Already Underway?

In a recent column, influential New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman declared that a third Intifada against Israel had begun.
Intifada is an Arabic word which means “shaking off” and is used to refer to a popular uprising. The First Intifada took place in Israel between December 1987 and September 1993. The Second Intifada lasted from September 2000 to February 2005. The two uprisings cost over 1,100 Israelis their lives, in addition to thousands more injured. 64 foreigners were killed in Israel during the Second Intifada. Palestinian casualties number roughly 5,000 over both rebellions. Both Intifadas were instigated by what Palestinians considered oppressive “occupation” policies. The first began when an Israeli army vehicle crashed into several Palestinian cars at a land crossing and Palestinians responded violently. The second occurred when a walk on the Temple Mount by Ariel Sharon triggered Arab riots.
In his column, Friedman muses that he was surprised the Palestinians had not responded to the current peace talks with another uprising. “You get many explanations from Palestinians: they’re too poor, too divided, too tired or that they realize these uprisings, in the end, did them more harm than good, especially the second,” he says.
He then observes, however, that perhaps the Third Intifada is actually already underway. “It’s the one that Israel always feared most — not an intifada with stones or suicide bombers, but one propelled by nonviolent resistance and economic boycott.”
He accuses the EU of leading the current intifada. “Israel’s economy depends on technology and agricultural exports to Europe and on European investments in its high-tech industries,” he observes. Current BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) trends in Europe are providing Palestinians with leverage this time around. US Secretary of State John Kerry is not wrong in saying failed peace talks would lead to further boycotts, he points out.

The big difference, Friedman says, between the two intifadas and the current situation, is that “the Third Intifada is based on a strategy of making Israelis feel strategically secure but morally insecure.
“The first two intifadas failed in the end because they never included a map of a two-state solution and security arrangements. They were more raw outbursts of rage against the occupation. You cannot move the Israeli silent majority when you make them feel strategically insecure and morally secure, which is what Hamas did with its lunatic shelling of Israel after it withdrew from Gaza; few Israelis were bothered by pummeling them back. President Anwar Sadat of Egypt, though, got all he wanted by making Israelis feel strategically secure but morally insecure about holding any of his land.”
Friedman acknowledges that some boycotters are fuelled by underlying anti-Semitism, but “that doesn’t mean that implanting 350,000 settlers in the West Bank and turning a blind eye to dozens of wildcat settlements — that even Israel deems “illegal” — is in Israel’s interest or smart.”
He ends by warning, “this incessant trashing of Kerry by Israeli ministers, and their demand that Palestinians halt all “incitement” — but that Israel be free to keep building settlements in their face — is not winning Israel friends in Europe or America. It is only energizing the boycotters.”

An Israeli Christian leader was threatened by Arab Israeli Knesset members in a heated exchange during a Knesset committee meeting Wednesday.
The hearing was part of an effort to legally differentiate Christians as a separate minority group from Arabs, similar to the Druze and Bedouins. That effort has been led by Likud MK Yariv Levin and Israeli Christian leaders.
But the initiative has been controversial within the Israeli Arab community.
“Levin wants to wickedly divide the Arab public, which is oppressed anyway,” Arab MK Jamal Zahalke said during the meeting, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Israeli Christian leader Shadi Halul of the Christian IDF Officers Forum, a group that promotes Christian recruitment and integration into the Israeli military, said he is proud to be Christian and deserves to be recognized as such. Halul accused the Arab MKs of racism.
“Don’t listen to these racists,” he added, pointing at the Arab MKs.
Committee chairman MK Haim Katz eventually had Arab MK Haneen Zoabi ejected from the meeting for suggesting that Halul deserves to be attacked.
“You are a coward! Go to the streets of Nazareth and Kfar Kana, say what you just said, and they’ll give you the response you deserve,” Zoabi said, the Jerusalem Post reported.
Zoabi, who is one of 12 Arabs in the Israeli Knesset, has had a controversial political career. She has been an outspoken opponent of Israel and participated in the 2010 Gaza flotilla. She also ran for mayor of Nazareth in late 2013, losing to the long-time Christian incumbent Ramiz Jaraisi.

U.S. Condemns Planned Construction in East Jerusalem

At a time when Palestinian violence against Israel has been increasing and Hamas is preparing to attack, Israel is once again drawing criticism for building homes. On Wednesday, the Jerusalem municipality authorized building permits for 558 new units in three East Jerusalem neighborhoods. 386 units are planned for Har Homa, 136 for Neve Yaakov, and 36 in Pisgat Zeev. Critics say the timing of the permits is inflammatory, as peace negotiations with the Palestinians are at a critical stage and the latter claim the land in question as their own.
Palestinian leaders were quick to voice their disapproval. Senior Palestinian official Hanan Ashrawi called the decision a “deliberate provocation of the Palestinians to drive them to leave the negotiations.
“Israel is not only capable of sabotaging the talks, but it is flagrantly destroying the chances of peace and stability throughout the region,” she said. ”Israel is engaging in the deliberate provocation of the Palestinians to drive them to leave the negotiations in protest of Israeli violations, and therefore should be blamed for the destruction of the peace process.”
“The international community must hold Israel accountable for this policy,” said Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat. ”This proves that Israel prefers settlement over peace.”
Even within the municipal government itself, the decision was disputed, with Deputy Mayor Pepe Alalu (Meretz) declaring the approval of building permits a cynical attempt to undermine the final status arrangements.
Throughout the current peace negotiations, settlement construction plans have been announced and permits approved, repeatedly drawing the ire and condemnation of Palestinian and international leaders. However, despite threats, the announcements have not halted the negotiation process.
The U.S. State Department was quick to condemn the newly planned construction. “Our position on Jerusalem is clear,” said State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters at a daily briefing. “We oppose any unilateral actions by either party that attempt to prejudge final status issues, including the status of Jerusalem.
The construction is needed to support the natural growth of the communities in question. Back in 2009, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu explained his position: “I have no intention of building new settlements in the West Bank… But like all the governments there have been until now, I will have to meet the needs of natural growth in the population. I will not be able to choke the settlements.”
Now, the permits in question are being authorized as one of the final stages for construction plans that were initiated years ago by private contractors. The plans themselves were approved much earlier. The permits issued this week are the last authorization required to begin the actual building.
The municipality was quick to point out in a statement responding to Alalu that the building permits were not only for Jewish homes. Permits were also issued for construction in Arab neighborhoods, as “the municipality has no legal right to deny proprietary rights of land owners.” Permits were awarded equally, without consideration of race, religion or gender of applicants.

Hamas Terror Tunnels: The IDF’s Underground War (Video)

One of Israel’s greatest wars is not happening above ground, but rather underground. Hamas, the leading terrorist organization in the Gaza Strip, has for many years been secretly operating a network of underground tunnels. Under the supervision of engineers, Hamas continually digs dozens of underground tunnels which are used to attack and kidnap Israelis and smuggle weapons in and out of the Gaza Strip.
With the help of civilian sympathizers in Gaza, the tunnels in Gaza are as much of a threat as weaponry. A senior officer in the IDF Intelligence Corps said that “Our estimate is that there are tens of tunnels from Gaza into Israel, only half of which we know about.” He pointed out that Hamas uses only the best to build and sustain these tunnels: “Hamas pays professionals to train special military units that have one simple purpose: to dig and tunnel underground.”
Hamas’ military wing is in charge of engineering and building the secret tunnels. The IDF approximates that twenty percent of Hamas’ budget is directed into building tunnels inside Gaza, many of which ultimately into Israel. “Tunneling has existed [in Gaza] since the mid 1990s, but it has really grown into an industry,” the officer said. “More funds are invested in it – we’re talking about millions of dollars every year – and the need for engineers are growing.”
In October 2013, the IDF discovered a tunnel that was approximately 1.7 kilometers long and 18 meters deep. It was built by terrorists in the Gazan city of Khan Yunis and stretched deep into the Israeli city of Ein Hashlosha.

One of the most famous and successful uses of these tunnels by Hamas was in 2006. Armed terrorists crossed into Israel illegally via the tunnels and killed two soldiers. The third soldier they took hostage. His name is Gilad Shalit. For five and a half years, Shalit was held captive in Gaza, his location unknown. He was finally released on October 18, 2011 when Israel agreed to free 447 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Shalit.
Along with the increase in terror tunnels, Hamas has also been rebuilding its weapons arsenal. One of the more frightening pieces of information is that Hamas has been successfully manufacturing its own rockets inside Gaza. The M-75 has the capacity to reach as far as Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Regularly paraded on the streets of Gaza, Hamas is attempting to intimidate Israel while inspire youngsters in Gaza to join Hamas.
IDF Intelligence estimates Hamas’ current arsenal are more than 10,000 rockets, mortar shells, and ammunition. “They focus on rockets of higher quality,” explains the officer. “During operation Pillar of Defense, only five M-75 rockets were fired, but we expect more in a future conflict.”

Israeli Defense Minister Attends Iranian Presentation
Moshe Ya’alon, Israel’s defense minister, astonished observers by attending a presentation given by the Iranian delegate at the Munich Security Conference last weekend.
By remaining in his seat during Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s address at the Munich Security Conference on Sunday, Israeli Foreign Minister Moshe Ya’alon has made a statement.

As Time Magazine points out, many in Israel interpreted Ya’alon’s action as a diplomatic opening between the Jewish state and the Islamic Republic.
“In September, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Ron Prosor, stood up and marched out of the General Assembly as Iran’s celebrated new president, Hassan Rouhani, arrived to make his address. On Sunday, Prosor stayed in his seat along with the Defense Minister, the proudly hawkish Moshe “Bugie” Ya’alon,” Time reports.
No matter what the reasoning, what is clear is that Ya’alon’s move – or, rather, his lack of a move – was done purposely. Only four months ago, Times of Israel reports, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “ordered Israel’s delegation to the United Nations to walk out during the speech by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to the General Assembly. ‘When Iran’s leaders stop denying the Holocaust of the Jewish people, stop calling for the destruction of the Jewish state and recognize Israel’s right to exist, the Israeli delegation will attend their addresses at the General Assembly,’ Netanyahu said at the time.”

Ya’alon was sitting in the front row for the Iranian presentation. As noted by media outlets, he had wanted to hear Zarif’s speech firsthand.
In Munich, Zarif continued to pledge good intentions regarding Iran’s nuclear program following the deal signed in November with the Six Global Powers.
“This is the Iranian regime. We shouldn’t delude ourselves … we should watch very carefully how this regime is going to manipulate, to deceive,” Ya’alon told the press.
Meir Javendafar, a Tehran-born expert on Iranian politics, comments on his blog, The Iran-Israel Observer:
“In my opinion, there is almost zero chance that Defense Minister Ya’alon would have stayed for the Zarif panel if he had been told otherwise by his boss, Benjamin Netanyahu.”

“Does this signal a complete shift in Netanyahu’s Iran policy? Unlikely,” Javendafar continues. “However, I believe that it does signal a small positive step forward in order to test the waters. To see how the Iranian side reacts in the future. Israel wins no matter what. If Iran reacts positively, then it would show that moderation and goodwill work. If Iran [does] not react or continues with its rhetoric against Israel, then Israel could say that it is the other side that does not want to change, no matter what. This would strengthen Israel’s case against Iran’s nuclear program.”
“Iran came to the table because of economic pressure,” Ya’alon stated. “One way or another, Iran’s military nuclear program must be stopped.”
