Refusing Palestinian Citizenship? Israeli Arabs Want to Remain in Israel
Posted by: Ahuva Balofsky  January 8, 2014 , 12:31 pm

“One law shall be to him that is homeborn, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among you” (Exodus 12:49)
Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman (Likud Beiteinu) has for some time now been floating the idea of land swaps as part of a final peace agreement with the Palestinians.  According to his proposal, areas with high Arab populations that were within Israel prior to 1967 and are contiguous with Arab regions in Judea and Samaria will become part of a new Palestinian state.  In exchange, Jewish settlement blocs within Judea and Samaria, currently claimed by the Palestinians, will be formally annexed to Israel.
The Arab-Israelis living within the so-called “Arab triangle” in Israel’s central and Galilee region, however, disapprove of the proposal.  As Israeli citizens, they want to remain a part of Israel.  Some have even expressed a willingness to move to make that happen.

According to Lieberman, “They define themselves as Palestinians, so why wouldn’t they join their Palestinian brothers?”
However, the population in question sees things differently.

“From an historical perspective, I’m living on Palestinian land that was passed down from father to son way before the State of Israel was established, and on the other hand I have an Israeli identification card,” Revia Mahajna, an attorney from the village Musmus in the Wadi Ara region told Ynetnews. “I’m a Palestinian living in the State of Israel just like there are Palestinians living in Canada or Germany.”
Another Musmus resident, Adal Mahajna, an insurance agent, said, “Our life is in Israel, and a transfer like this will cut us off from our family and our friends, Arabs and Jews.”
Alaa Atmanah from Kafr Kara, and Jabar Jabrin from Umm al-Fahm, both lawyers, warned about the dangers of Lieberman’s plan.  ”It’s a racist proposal,” Atmanah said. “Most of the population won’t agree to give up their Israeli citizenship.
“I don’t know what’s behind the proposal, or what Israel’s interests are in the plan, but it won’t bring any benefit – only internal and external harm,” he said.  He added that most local residents would feel forced to move to cities such as Hadera, Afula or Pardes Hanna to remain in Israel should the proposal be accepted.
Jabrin said, “It will cause a third nakba, and we’ll be forced to fight the proposal in every way that we can.  My brother lives in Nazareth, and we’ll end up being separated.”
Jabrin, who served as a traffic cop while he was a student, and whose father was a chief superintendent of police, supports a national service program for Arab Israelis.
“I expect to receive the right to be equal in all that is related to privileges and responsibilities.”

In addition to family ties, it seems economic considerations play heavily into making Israel attractive to its Arab citizens.  Several polls and interviews conducted in recent years suggest that given the choice, most Palestinian Arab Israelis would prefer to remain in Israel, with some willing to move house if their homes became part of a new Palestinian state. A 2011 poll of over 1,000 East Jerusalem Arabs revealed that 54% would prefer to stay in Israel and only 25% would actively move to a new Palestinian state.  Even if their neighborhoods were rezoned to such a state, 40% said they would try to move back to Israel.  When asked why, they identified access to better jobs, smaller classes for their children, and better healthcare as motivating factors.
Said Abu Shakra, curator of the Umm al-Fahm Art Gallery, told themedialine.org in 2012 that while Arab Israelis would like to see an independent Palestinian state established, most would not want to actually move there.  Life is good for them in Israel.  Abu Shakra says he sees himself as a bridge between Israel and the Palestinian people and wants both to see him as an asset and not an enemy.

Shakeup in the Peace Process: Jerusalem, Refugees off the Negotiating Table?
Posted by: Ahuva Balofsky  January 8, 2014 , 12:40 pm
“And the land shall not be sold in perpetuity; for the land is Mine; for ye are strangers and settlers with Me.” (Leviticus 25:23)
Miri Regev (Likud Beiteinu) plans to introduce another piece of legislation to the Knesset on Sunday, according to Yediot Ahronot, which would limit the ability of the Prime Minister to carry out peace negotiations with the Palestinians.  The proposed legislation would require prior consent of an absolute majority of Knesset members (61) in order to make concessions regarding Jerusalem or the status of Palestinian refugee claimants.

The bill reads, “Negotiations on these issues, which are launched without approval from the Knesset, are non-binding. In such an event, government bodies will not be committed to the outcome (of these negotiations), nor will the talks or their outcome be valid for the State of Israel, the government of Israel or other authorities in the State of Israel.”
Regev claims the proposal is based on an earlier draft from Communications Minister Gilad Erdan (Likud Beiteinu), which was never presented in the previous Knesset.

“The aim is to reach a situation in which there cannot be negotiations on drastic concessions that adversely impact on the Jewish identity of the state and exacerbate the rift that exists in Israeli society, without the approval of a majority in Israel’s parliament,” Regev says. “Such actions are forbidden, anti-democratic, and, according to this proposed bill, illegal. Thus, any negotiations held without Knesset approval would be invalid.”

Israel’s First Gas Customers: Palestinians
Posted by: Ahuva Balofsky  January 9, 2014 , 11:21 am
“But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God, for it is He that giveth thee power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore unto thy fathers, as it is this day.” (Deuteronomy 8:18)

Israeli gas company Leviathan will sell $1.2 billion of natural gas to the Palestine Power Generation Company. (Photo: Avishai Teicher/ Wiki Commons)
Partners in Israel’s Leviathan offshore gas field have signed their first export contract, to the tune of $1.2 billion, with an unlikely client: the Palestine Power Generation Company.  According to the deal, the power company will be supplied with 4.75 billion cubic meters of gas to run a power plant that will be built near Jenin, a Palestinian city south of Afula.  The gas field is located off the Haifa coast.

The field is owned in part by Israeli companies Delek Drilling, Avner Oil and Gas and Ratio Oil Exploration, and will be operated by Houston-based Noble Energy.  The deal was signed Sunday at the American Colony Hotel in Jerusalem.  In attendance were Palestinian Energy Minister Dr. Omar Kittaneh and executives from the reservoir’s stakeholders: the Delek Group, Noble Energy and Ratio Oil Exploration.

“This is a dual historic event: the first contract to supply gas from the Leviathan reservoir, which is Israel’s largest natural gas reservoir, and the first contract to export gas for the sale of natural gas to a company in the Palestinian Authority,” said Gideon Tadmor, chairman of Delek Drilling and CEO of Avner Oil Exploration. “The Leviathan project is expected to have a significant positive impact on the Israeli economy and on its geopolitical positioning.”
“We hope that following the signing of the contract today, more export contracts will be signed with neighboring countries.”

More than a business deal, this agreement could have political implications, given the tense nature of the current relationship between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.  Some pundits have pointed out the timing of the deal coincides with US Secretary of State’s less productive peace negotiations.
TourIsrael-Resolution-600WIDE

“I believe that a strong and stable economy between the parties will lead to peace and stability in the entire region – and everyone will benefit from economic prosperity and growth,” said Yitzhak Tshuva, controlling shareholder of the Delek Group, at the signing ceremony. “Peace is a joint venture, economic cooperation, mutual trust and respect. Economic cooperation such as the agreement that was signed today will help to bring the nations closer and will contribute to laying the foundations for peace.”
The Jenin plant is expected to take 30 months and $300 million dollars to build.  Currently, the PA consumes roughly 8% of Israel’s energy demand.  The power plant will help spur both the local economy in Jenin and the economic growth of the Palestinian-controlled Area A.
The export of Israel’s natural gas has itself been subject to disagreement.  After much deliberation, the Israeli cabinet decided to reduce its target energy exports from the previously set 53% to just 40%, keeping the rest at home for domestic use.  However, some Knesset members were not satisfied, maintaining that the more gas retained by Israel, the lower local energy costs will be.

Another challenge is determining how to transport exported gas.  Some possibilities include piping natural gas to a proposed liquefied natural gas facility in Cyprus or Turkey, or a floating liquefied natural gas facility.  Each of these options comes with its own costs, risks and challenges, both physical and political.
Still, Noble Energy CEO Lawson Freeman said his company welcomed the historic agreement, Leviathan’s first.
“We hope to reach a state where we can sign more gas contracts with local customers,” he said. “We’re looking forward to seeing the development of Leviathan in the near future.”

Rockets Launched from Gaza, IDF Strikes Back
Posted by: Lea Speyer  January 9, 2014 , 2:54 pm

“Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.” (Exodus 21: 24-25)
Violence escalates along the Gaza Strip. (Photo: Ahmad Khateib/Flash90 )
Early Thursday morning, an IDF patrol was attacked by three mortars launched from the Gaza Strip in the southern Eshkol region. The three shells exploded near the fence between Israel and Gaza. No casualties or damage were reported by the IDF.
In retaliation for the attacks, the IAF targeted and struck a Gazan terror cell. The cell was in final preparations to launch a high trajectory missile into Israeli territory. Before the strike, IDF forces warned nearby Israeli farmers to not work near the border fence today due to the fear of sniper reprisal. Any land as close as 1 km to the Gaza Strip was to be evacuated.

An army spokesman commented on the successful strikes, saying the IDF had “intercepted terrorists during their final preparations to launch rockets towards Israel.” Hamas took responsibility for the early morning strike.
On Wednesday, Palestinians claimed that Israeli forces killed a high ranking member of Islamic Jihad. Mohammed al-Ejlla, in Gaza. The IDF vehemently denies this claim, saying it did not strike in Gaza on the day al-Ejlla was killed. The rocket attacks this morning by terrorists in Gaza are revenge for the death of al-Ejlla.

The attack this morning does not bode well for peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerryrecently visited Israel, acting as a broker of peace between the two sides. While those in Gaza are governed by Hamas and do not fall under the rule of the Palestinian Authority, the mornings attack is a major setback in peace talks.
Ever since Israel gave up the Gaza Strip to Palestinian control in 2005 under Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Gaza has become a hotbed of terrorist activity. Last Thursday, Israel targeted three sites in the northern area of the Gaza Strip that concealed rocket launchers and observation posts after rockets were launched from Gaza Strip in the early morning hours. Israel has made it clear it would not tolerate acts of violence against its citizens and would retaliate in kind.

Violence and Hatred: Palestinian Incitement Against Israel on the Rise According to New Report (Video)
Posted by: Lea Speyer January 6, 2014 , 12:07 pm
“The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but the perverse tongue will be cut off. The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked, what is perverse.” (Proverbs 10: 31-32)
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (center) and Intelligence Affairs Minister Dr. Yuval Steinitz (left) discuss Palestinian incitement at the weekly cabinet meeting. (Photo: Miriam Alster/FLASH90)
The Israeli Cabinet, at its weekly meeting, discussed the ongoing incitement and culture of hatred espoused by the Palestinian Authority (PA). The annual “Palestinian Incitement Index” was presented by Intelligence Affairs Minister Dr. Yuval Steinitz and the Director General of his ministry, Brig.-Gen. (ret.) Yossi Kuperwasser. The annual index has been presented to the Israeli cabinet since 2009.
The index presented findings regarding Palestinian incitement over the last year. The new findings also included examples of blatant incitement by the PA over the last couple of months when diplomatic negotiations began. Findings prove that not only during periods of negotiation does incitement increase, but the use of famous Nazi elements, such as images of Hitler, increases as well.
PA incitement takes place officially and unofficially. Official media outlets and inter alia organizations, such as educational and religious networks, work closely with the PA Chairman. The index was able to pinpoint four main messages of PA incitement:
Israel has no right to exist, especially as a Jewish state. Therefore, Jews have no claim or link to the holy land.
Expect soon the unavoidable disappearance of Israel.
Jews are sub-human and should be dealt with accordingly.
Terrorism and all forms of struggle, no matter how violent, are legitimate tools to reach the final goal.
The PA, in their constant usage of these four main messages, is educating its people to hate and to openly attack and kill Jews and Israelis. In response to these findings, Minister Steinitz said, “We must not ignore the fact that the Palestinian educational system and media, under the patronage of Abu Mazen and during the negotiations, are educating and inciting – on a daily basis – for the destruction of the State of Israel.”

John Kerry and Shimon Peres “Optimistic” About Peace Talks
Posted by: Lea Speyer  January 5, 2014 , 12:51 pm
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has been shuttling between meetings with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, attempting to broker a viable peace agreement between the two sides. For the last three days, Kerry has met with advisers in both Jerusalem and Ramallah in efforts to reach a mutual peace agreement that satisfies both the demands of Israel and the Palestinians. This is Kerry’s tenth visit to the region in the past year.
Kerry is set to travel to Saudia Arabia and Jordan today to discuss his efforts as well as other regional issues in which the United States has an interest. He is slated to return Sunday evening to Jerusalem and may say several more days before returning back to Washington.
The current peace talks got off to a rocky start when Netanyahu publicly stated his concerns regarding the PA not being a viable partner for peace. When asked about reaching an agreement, Kerry explained that “These issues are not easy…These are complicated issues that involve…the survival of peoples. The conflict has gone on too long, so positions have hardened. Mistrust obviously exists at a very high level. So we have to work through that and around that and over that.”

Shin Bet: Second Terrorist Attack was “Days Away”
Posted by: Lea Speyer  January 5, 2014 , 12:45 pm
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalms 46:1)
The terrorist cell behind the December 22, 2013 bus bombing in Bat Yam was days away from conducting a second similar attack in Tel Aviv. The Shin Bet, Israel’s domestic security service, confirmed the thwarted plan after arresting and questioning members of the cell. Four terrorists and 10 suspects were arrested last week in Bethlehem, along with explosives that were to be used in the upcoming attack.
The cell, part of the group known as Islamic Jihad, is a Palestinian faction with ties to Iran. Questions are now arising as to whether the cell was funded by Iran. In speaking to The Jerusalem Post, Shin Bet sources said that “the cell appears to have been locally formed, but that the next stage of the investigation will seek to determine whether an Iranian influence played a part in orchestrating the bombing.”
Alert passengers on the bus that exploded on December 22nd were responsible for saving the lives of all those aboard the bus. After noticing a medium sized bag left unaccompanied at the back of the bus, passengers alerted the driver who immediately evacuated the bus. Before police were able to diffuse the bomb, it exploded, lightly injuring one policeman.

Pastor Saeed Abedini: America’s Own Jonathan Pollard
“He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart.” (Psalms 107:14)
Iranian-American Pastor Saeed Abedini, 33, was been imprisoned by the Islamic Republic of Iran since the summer of 2012. Sentenced under suspicions of undermining national security, Abedini was sentenced to eight years in prison in January 2013. A grassroots movement in the United States has been advocating for his release. The Facebook page “Pray for Pastor Saeed Abedini” has gathered over 22,000 likes. The issue of Abedini’s unlawful imprisonment has become a hot button issue among American Evangelical’s.

Revolutionary Bill: No More Pardons for Terrorists
“Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, but those who plan peace have joy.” (Proverbs 12:20)
Palestinian relatives and friends of Rami Barbakh, a released Palestinian prisoner, celebrate upon his arriving at his home in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip on December 31, 2013. (Photo: Abed Rahim Khatib / Flash90)
The release of terrorists from Israeli prison as part of peace agreements with the Palestinians has been a contentious issue in Israeli society for years. This week, in the wake of the release of 26 terrorists, a revolutionary bill was proposed on the floor of the Knesset that would redefine the legal system of Israel.
MK Ayelet Shaked of the Jewish Home party and MK David Tzur of the Hatnuah party have brought forth a bill that would no longer allow pardons for convicted murderers. The bill has received support from many parties and has already been signed by members of Jewish Home, Hatnuah, Likud, Israel Beyteinu, and the Kadima parties.
Israel does not have a constitution but rather a system known as the Basic Laws of Israel. These basic laws form the basis of the legal system in Israel. One such law, The Basic Law of the President of the State, allows the President of Israel to pardon criminals. Should the new bill presented by Shaked and Tzur be passed in the Knesset, a new amendment would prevent any convicted terrorist from being pardoned no matter the condition. The amendment would allow, at the time of sentencing, the possibility for a judge to rule that future amnesty is no longer an option.
When speaking of the reasoning behind the proposed bill, Shaked explained to Arutz7, “Releasing terrorists has never been a ‘red line’ of any government. Therefore it is important for us legislators to stop the contemptible and despicable pardoning of terrorists and murderers. Right now, in the shadow of the terrorist releases, it is more important than ever to determine the ‘red lines’ of our governing system.”

Israel’s Marathon to Nowhere
Posted by: Lea Speyer  January 2, 2014 , 9:51 am

“Too long have I had my dwelling among those who hate peace.” (Psalms 120:6)
If I could assign an image of the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians it would have to be a hamster in a hamster wheel. Just picture a poor little hamster, spending all this time and copious amounts of energy running. But to where? The answer is nowhere. Israel is the hamster, running around in circles, trying to make gains in a seemingly impossible situation. It tries to meet the demands of the international community, running around trying to appease its biggest supporters. However, where is all this running leading Israel?

Secretary of State John Kerry is arriving in Israel today to resume peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians. I say John Kerry is wasting his time. This week, Israel released 26 Palestinian terrorists as a sign of good will towards the Palestinians to further positive relations between the two sides. Many in Israel were outraged over the release of these murderers who are considered heroes in their hometowns. Why should Israel set free men who killed in cold blood in the name of extremist religious beliefs and a deep hatred of Jews and Zionists ? Especially in the wake of the recent wave of terrorist events, such as the stabbing of an Israeli policeman, what have the Palestinians brought to the table other than violence?
I never understood how it is possible to negotiate peace with a partner that openly calls for the destruction of the State of Israel and the total annihilation of the Jewish people. This is not fiction. These points are written in the charters of various Palestinian organizations. There is no arguing with fact. While I applaud the United States for their good intentions, there is a complete double standard that the United States imposes on Israel. The United States commands Israel to make peace with the Palestinians. I don’t see the U.S. trying to make peace with Al Qaeda. If anything, quite the opposite. Guns blazing, the U.S. has been at war with terrorism for the last 12 years and has yet to sit down at the negotiating table with those individuals who are trying to bring down the U.S.
Israel needs to grow up. It needs to stop running around in circles and cowing under the first sign of intimidation from others. The one sided concessions Israel always seem to be giving only weakens Israel’s position at the bargaining table. The more Israel gives the Palestinians, the more the Palestinians will demand. Israel has stated that it cannot agree to peace until it is recognized as a legitimate state by the Palestinians.
Let’s be honest – this will never happen unless there is some kind of miraculous Godly intervention. Last year, Israeli Finance Minister Yair Lapid said: “I don’t feel we need a declaration from the Palestinians that they recognize Israel as a Jewish state. My father [former Justice Minister Yosef Lapid] didn’t come to Haifa from the Budapest ghetto to get recognition from Mahmoud Abbas. The whole concept of the State of Israel is that we recognize ourselves. After 2,000 years of being dependent on other people, we are independent and make our own rules now.”
Netanyahu needs to take a major clue from Lapid and stop giving away the integrity and credibility of the State of Israel by negotiating with terrorists. The impossible is still impossible. Instead of running around in a complete circle with absolutely no direction, Israel needs to look ahead and walk towards the horizon of its future – a future where Israel can hold its head up high and stand firm in the conviction that peace with terrorist murderers will lead to nowhere.

I’m Glad My Son’s Murderers Have Not Been Found
Posted by: Sherri Mandell  January 2, 2014 , 11:51 am
Please, Israeli government, I beg you: Don’t go looking for my son’s killers. The ones who cruelly beat Koby and Yosef to death with rocks, the barbarians who attacked two eighth grade boys —  my son and his friend — who were on a hike near our home in Israel. Please don’t find them. Don’t apprehend them and put them in jail and make my family and me sit through a long trial and sentencing, where my heart will quake and my stomach will constrict and I will feel that I am about to faint.

Don’t find them guilty and put them in jail. Because I don’t want the torture of knowing that these killers will find their way to freedom one day, will be greeted by their mothers with hugs, while my son and Yosef lie in the ground. I could not bear to go through what 26 Israeli families are going through today: betrayal by the government that is supposed to protect them.
Unfortunately, the Israeli victims, the ones who were killed, have sadly disappeared from our consciousness as a society. Their parents are now old and frail, the weakest in our society. Their children were murdered by Palestinian terrorists in the early eighties or nineties, 20 or 30 years ago. They cannot stand up for themselves or for their children, because they are elderly, fragile, vulnerable. Many have died from the pain.
As a bereaved mother, it is difficult to speak out. It hurts. Yet a group of bereaved mothers created an organization called Forever Mothers. We visited the Knesset last week to lobby against the prison release. Tali Ben Yishai is a member of our group. Her daughter Ruthie and her son-in-law and three grandchildren, including a three-month-old baby, were murdered when a terrorist broke into their house close to midnight and stabbed them all to death in their beds. It is conceivable that one day their murderer could be released. After all, today the Israeli government is releasing the murderers of Rachel Weiss who along with her three children was killed in a bus bombing. As the bus burned, she tried to get her children off. A soldier who was on the bus, on his way home, David Delerosa, tried to help her but the bus exploded before they could exit. They were burned to death.
Shira Avraham, a member of Forever Mothers, knows what happens when terrorists are released. Her nine-month-old baby Shaked was murdered in her home by a terrorist who had been released in a former deal. He broke into Shira’s home the night of the festive meal of Rosh Hashanah, and murdered her baby and the friend who was holding her.
At our meeting, one of the few Knesset members who attended said, “It’s a disgrace that you bereaved mothers have to come fight for your children. It is the government that should be protecting you.”
He is right. It should not be bereaved families leading this fight. The government should be protecting the most vulnerable families. In addition, every Israeli citizen should be protesting.

And in some cases, it is not just the Israeli government that should be protecting us: It should be the American government as well. For example, Frederick Rosenfeld, whose killers are being released, was an American citizen. Originally from New York, he was killed when he was 48 years old, stabbed to death. Yet the American government, led by Secretary of State John Kerry, works to expedite his killer’s release.
Chavi Levi’s son Avichai was 16 when he was killed by terrorists, on his way home with an anniversary cake for his parents. The killers were apprehended and Chavy and her husband sat at his trial for a year. The killers were sentenced. Less than three years later, these murderers were released in the Shalit deal.
Imagine that you had a child who was murdered by Palestinian terrorists. Now imagine that the Israeli government, goaded on by America, released them home to a hero’s welcome.
Better that my son’s killers have not been found.

Rocky Start to Israel-PA Peace Talks
Posted by: Ahuva Balofsky  January 2, 2014 , 10:53 am
“And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him: ‘Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art, northward and southward and eastward and westward;for all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.” (Genesis 13:14-15)

This is a week that saw 26 Palestinian prisoners released from Israeli jails as a precondition for ongoing peace talks, yet the fragile negotiations are continuing under constant threat.  While speculation regarding settlement expansion in Judea and Samaria drew criticism from PA Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas, both Israel’s right and left wing put forth conflicting bill proposals in an effort to influence the outcome of any future peace agreement.
On Tuesday night, Abbas compared Israeli settlements in Judea and Samaria, as well as building in East Jerusalem, a “cancer.”

“We will not remain patient as the settlement cancer spreads, especially in Jerusalem, and we will use our right as a UN observer state by taking political, diplomatic and legal action to stop it,” Abbas said during a speech in honor of the forty-ninth anniversary of the founding of the Fatah party, according to AFP.
Last week, when reports of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s alleged plan to announce new building in the area began to spread, Abbas met with US envoy Martin Indyk and “asked for US intervention to stop the Israeli government from issuing new settlement decisions in order to save the peace process and the American efforts,” chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said.
The PA will “no longer remain committed to not joining international organizations,” including the International Criminal Court (ICC), “if Israel goes ahead with any building announcements”, Erekat said last week, according to the Palestinian Wafa news agency.  No such announcements have been made as yet.

Iran Designing New Centrifuges in Surprise Move
Posted by: Lea Speyer  December 29, 2013 , 12:18 pm

Gas centrifuges are a key component in uranium enrichment. (Photo: US Department of Energy)
Last week, 100 Iranian legislatures drafted a proposal calling for further uranium enrichment. In a surprise move, Iran has also announced this week that it is designing a new type of centrifuge to help further its enrichment efforts. The Tasnim news agency quotes Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization head Ali Akbar Salehi as saying “A new generation of centrifuges is being built, but they should undergo all tests before mass production.”

The deal reached in November between Iran and the P5+1 (United States, Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia) stipulates that Iran is forbidden from operating centrifuges for a period of six months. However, the agreement failed to state that Iran is not allowed to develop new centrifuges. Salehi numbered Iran’s current working centrifuges at 19,000. According to the deal, Iran must hold back from installing any new centrifuges and is limited to enrich uranium to levels up to 20 percent.
The centrifuge is a key component in uranium enrichment. After uranium is turned into a gaseous form, a centrifuge takes the gas and spins it with a force thousands of times stronger than gravity. This forces U-235 atoms, the atoms necessary for eventually creating a nuclear bomb, to separate and leaves you with a highly concentrated, highly enriched form of the U-235 atom. In uranium enrichment plants, thousands of centrifuges are linked together, helping to enrich uranium to the desired level of 90 percent.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) told Fox News that the “Iranians are showing their true intentions.” The Israeli Embassy in Washington responded to Iran’s plans by calling once again on Iran to stop their enrichment process. The statement said “Installing additional advanced centrifuges would be further indication that Iran intends to develop a nuclear bomb – and to speed up the process of achieving it.”
The Obama administration is pursuing avenues of diplomacy when it comes to Iran and its nuclear ambitions. As the P5+1 and Iran get set to launch into further discussion and iron out the details of the nuclear agreement, the world waits to see if peaceful avenues of negotiation can stop Iran from attaining a nuclear bomb.

Rockets Slam into Northern Israel
“Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. And I will turn you about and drive you forward, and bring you up from the uttermost parts of the north, and lead you against the mountains of Israel. Then I will strike your bow from your left hand, and will make your arrows drop out of your right hand. You shall fall on the mountains of Israel, you and all your hordes and the peoples who are with you. I will give you to birds of prey of every sort and to the beasts of the field to be devoured. You shall fall in the open field, for I have spoken, declares the Lord God.” (Ezekiel 39:1-5)

Early Sunday morning two Katyusha rockets originating from Lebanon landed just west of Kiryat Shmona in the Northern Galilee region. This is the first time in four months rockets originating from Lebanon have been launched towards Israel. The IDF confirmed the launch site of the rockets and responded with heavy artillery fire. Thankfully, no injuries or damage was reported as a result of the rockets. UNIFIL, a UN peacekeeping force stationed in Southern Lebanon, called for restraint from both the IDF and the Lebanese army in the aftermath of the attack. In total, five rockets were launched towards Israel. Media in Lebanon claim that more rocket launches were attempted but failed to reach Israeli territory. The IDF is canvassing the area, looking for the fallen rockets. Nissim Malka, mayor of Kiryat Shmona, told Israel’s Channel 2 news “We woke up to the sounds of rockets this morning. At the moment residents are going to work as normal. We will notify them of changes if necessary.” No sirens were sounded upon the incoming of the rockets. Only after explosions were heard did the IDF investigate and confirm the successful hit of the two rockets.
SEE PAGE FOR VIDEO AND PHOTO .
At the start of this weeks cabinet meeting, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated: “Today, the IDF responded quickly and forcefully to the rocket fire from Lebanon.  This is our policy regarding Lebanon just as it is with the Gaza Strip. We will not allow a drizzle and we will respond strongly, and if need be, will carry out preventive action.” Netanyahu went on to say that he holds the Lebanese government responsible for the rocket attacks, saying “What is happening in Lebanon is that Hezbollah is stationing thousands of missiles and rockets in apartments, in the heart of the civilian population, and is thus perpetrating two war crimes simultaneously. It is organizing the firing at civilians, just as it did today, and it is hiding behind civilians as human shields. This is a double war crime that that is being perpetrated under the aegis of the Lebanese government and army, which are not lifting a finger to prevent this arming and these crimes. We hold the Lebanese government responsible for this development.”

Lebanon is legally governed Hezbollah, a hybrid terrorist organization that openly calls for the destruction of Israel. In early December, senior Hezbollah operative Hassan al-Laqqis was assassinated in Beirut. Hezbollah and Iran blame Israel for the assassination. Israel denies these claims. Hassan Nasrallah, secretary general of Hezbollah, has vowed revenge against Israel for the death of al-Laqqis. In a ceremony honoring the death of al-Laqqis, Nasrallah stated “If the Israelis think…that Hezbollah is busy and that Israel will not pay the price, I say to them today, ‘You are wrong’.”

Since the Second Lebanon War in 2006, the border between Israel and Lebanon has been very quiet. However, tensions have begun to rise. Several weeks ago, in an isolated incident, a rouge Lebanese soldier killed an Israeli soldier via sniper fire across the border. Since then, Israel has been on high alert. Today’s attack may signal a new wave of violence from Israel’s northern neighbors.

26 Murderers Walk Free: Third Round of Terrorists to be Released Monday
Posted by: Ahuva Balofsky  December 29, 2013 , 3:02 pm

“Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not; for I will not justify the wicked.” (Exodus 23:7)
Israel is set to release the next batch of prisoners this week despite a number of incidents that seemed to put the peace process in jeopardy. (Photo: Abed Rahim Khatib/Flash90)
The Israeli Knesset announced it ratified its decision Saturday night to release the next group of 26 Palestinian prisoners in accordance with preconditions agreed upon before peace talks began in August.  This decision came despite a recent wave of terror attacks and protests held outside the Prime Minister’s Jerusalem residence.
Back in July, the government agreed to a US-brokered deal in which Israel would release in four stages 104 Palestinian prisoners, most held for crimes committed before the 1993 Oslo Accords. In exchange, the Palestinian Authority agreed to return to the negotiating table.  The first two releases took place in August and October.  The third release is set to take place early this week.
The Israeli Prison Service released a list of prisoners to be set free.  These are the men on the list, along with the crimes for which they were convicted, as published by The Times of Israel:
1. Muhammad Yusuf Adnan Elafandi, arrested May 13, 1992, for stabbing two youths in Jerusalem. After the attack, his life was saved by an Israeli woman who defended him from a lynch mob. He was convicted of attempted murder. The woman who saved his life, Bella Freund, was the subject of a song by the hip hop band Hadag Nahash, in collaboration with rocker Barry Sakharof.
2. Farid Ahmed Shahade, arrested February 16, 1985, for the murder of Yosef Farhan, a suspected collaborator with Israel, in Jaffa.
3-5. Yakoub Muhammad Ouda Ramadan, Afana Mustafa Ahmad Muhammad, and Da’agna Nufal Mahmad Mahmoud, arrested April 1, 1993. The three were convicted of stabbing Sara Sharon, 37, to death in Holon on January 20, 1993.
6-7. Abu al Rub Mustafa Mahmoud Faisal and Kamil Awad Ali Ahmad, convicted of murder in the killing of 20-year-old IDF soldier Yoram Cohen in a shootout in the West Bank town of Jenin. Ali Ahmad was also convicted of kidnapping, torturing and murdering 15 Palestinians suspected of collaborating with Israel. Faisal was convicted of manslaughter in four of those cases.
8. Damara Ibrahim Mustafa Bilal, arrested June 16, 1989, and convicted of murdering Steven Friedrich Rosenfeld, 48, a US-born immigrant to Israel. Damra and several others accosted Rosenfeld outside the West Bank settlement of Ariel, grabbed the knife he was carrying, and stabbed him to death with it. His body was found on the following day by a Palestinian shepherd.
9. Abu Mohsin Khaled Ibrahim Jamal, arrested April 10, 1991, and convicted of murder. Abu-Muhsan ambushed Shlomo Yahya, a 76-year-old gardener, in a public park in Moshav Kadima and stabbed him to death.
10. Tamimi Rushdi Muhammad Sa’id, convicted of kidnapping and murdering Hayim Mizrahi at a Palestinian-owned farm outside the settlement of Beit El, where Mizrahi lived, in 1993. Mizrahi had come to the farm to shop for eggs.
11. Silawi Khaled Kamel Osama, one of three Palestinians convicted in the murder of Motti Biton. Similar to Mizrahi, Biton was shot while he was shopping for groceries in a Palestinian-owned store. Afterwards his wife, who was in the car outside, fired at his attackers, who detonated a pipe bomb and fled. Biton was gravely wounded in the attack and died in an Israeli hospital three days later. Osama was also convicted of murder and manslaughter in the deaths of four Palestinians suspected of collaborating with the authorities.
12. Sawafta Sudqi Abdel Razeq Mouhlas, who stabbed Yosef Malka (Malkin) to death on December 29, 1990, during an attempt to rob his home in Haifa.
13. Barham Fawzi Mustafa Nasser, arrested December 20, 1993, for the murder of Morris (Moshe) Edri. Nasser, a former employee of Edri, 65, ambushed Edri and stabbed him in the back. After he was apprehended, he said he had carried out the murder to prove that he was worthy of joining Hamas.
14-16. Yusuf Ahmed Nu’aman Al-Shalvi, Mahmad Anis Aiman Jaradat, and Ahmad Yusuf Bilal Abu-Hassin, convicted of murdering multiple Palestinians suspected of collaborating with Israel.
17. Mahmad Naim Shawmra Yunis, convicted of murder in the death of Yossef Hayun, a police sapper who was killed while attempting to disarm a bomb in Moshav Shekef in June 1993.
18. Mahmud Muhammad Salman, arrested May 6, 1994, and convicted in the murder of Shai Shoker. Salman strangled Shoker with a shoelace outside Tira on February 2, 1994.
19. Ahmed Ibrahim Jamal Abu-Jamal, convicted of attempted murder. Abu-Jamal was slated for release in 2016.
20. Mahmoud Ibrahim Abu-Ali Faiz, convicted of murdering Ronny Levy.
21. Zaki Rami Barbakh Jawdat, convicted of murdering Yosef Zandani.
22. Mustafa Ahmed Khaled Jumaa, convicted of aggravated assault, up for release in 2014.
23. Abu Hadir Muhammad Yassin Yassin, convicted of murder. Yassin shot Yigal Shahaf, 24, in the head while Shahaf and his wife were walking through Jerusalem’s Old City toward the Western Wall. Shahaf died in hospital on the following day. The murder weapon had been bought from a Jewish Israeli. Yassin was slated for release in 2016.
24-25. Muammar Ata Mahmoud Mahmoud and Salah Khalil Ahmad Ibrahim, convicted of murdering Menahem Stern, a history professor at Hebrew University. Stern, 64, a winner of the prestigious Israel Prize, was stabbed to death while walking to work at the university’s Givat Ram campus on June 22, 1989. A monument in his memory figures in a scene from the prize-winning Israeli film “Footnote.” Ibrahim was also convicted in the murder of Eli Amsalem. In addition, the two murdered a Palestinian suspected of collaborating with Israel, Hassin Zaid.
26. Taqtuq Lutfi Halma Ibrahim, arrested March 3, 1989, and convicted of murder in the shooting of IDF soldier Binyamin Meisner, on February 24, 1989, in Nablus.

Dozens of Israelis, including family members of victims of the prisoners in question, protested outside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence on Saturday.  The group appears to have joined the personal protest of one victim’s family, members of which have been there for five days already.
LIBI-ColdWeather-600WIDEOrtal Tamam, niece of victim Moshe Tamam, began the protest last week. “I’m sick of feeling like a stranger in my own country. Public servants who are supposed to represent me are not doing it,” she told ynetnews.com.

“We’ve come all the way to the entryway of the prime minister’s residence… it seems we will not be able to do more than that, seeing as recurring requests pleading ministers and the prime minister to meet with us have amounted to nothing. We want to send a clear message – the State is changing. We are crying out and will continue to be here, and the fact that people are here to support us is heartwarming.”

Meira Stern Glick, daughter of victim Professor Menachem Stern, said, “The release is causing great distress. I think it’s immoral. Murder is murder, and these people are murderers. There is a sense of great injustice – someone who killed in cold blood should be given a life sentence.”

She added, “I was in support of the Shalit deal. Then they had no other choice, because it was either to release prisoners or give up on the captive soldier. I’ll never forget how happy I was the day (Gilad Shalit) came home. But this time, it’s immoral, because there were other choices. The government chose that option out of political considerations. I just hope this release won’t be in vain.”

The remaining 22 terrorists, Arab-Israelis and residents of east Jerusalem in the deal are expected to be released in 2014.

IDF: Christian Arab Recruitment On the Rise
Posted by: Ahuva Balofsky  December 26, 2013 , 12:51 pm

IDF: Rise in Christian Arab Recruitment

The IDF has released some numbers on the Christian community: it has reported a significant rise in the number of Christian Arab recruits in the past year.  Since June, 84 Christians have volunteered for army service. Normally, the average is 50 per year.
“The last recruitment cycle is the largest observed in recent years,” an army source told The Jerusalem Post. “The contribution of minorities who voluntarily enlist is very important to the IDF’s capabilities,” he added.
In the wake of the Arab Spring, Christian Arabs residing in Israel are now attempting to further distance their identity from Israel’s larger Arab society which is 90% Muslim. A new political party called B’nei Brit Hahadasha, which translates as “Sons of the New Testament,” has become one of the more vocal platforms representing Christian Arab interests in Israel. According to the Facebook page for the party, the main goals of B’nei Brit Hahadasha are to “encourage full integration of Christian Arabs into Israel society, the two-state solution, and enlistment of Arab Christians in the Israel Defense Forces.”

Netanyahu to Announce Construction Plans Coinciding with Prisoner Release
Posted by: Ahuva Balofsky  December 26, 2013 , 3:41 pm

“Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD: Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a costly corner-stone of sure foundation; he that believeth shall not make haste.” (Isaiah 28:16)
Bibi speeking
News sources in Israel are reporting that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to announce new construction in Judea and Samaria to coincide with the release of 26 Palestinian prisoners next week.  This move has been strongly discouraged by several bodies, including the US, the UN and the Palestinians themselves, however, peace talks are still scheduled to continue.
According to an unnamed Israeli official, “The Israeli government will announce tenders for new construction in the West Bank and in East Jerusalem which will coincide with the release of a third group of Palestinian prisoners.”
The upcoming prisoner release is part of a US-brokered arrangement in which Israel would release 104 Palestinian prisoners, most held for terrorist activities prior to the 1993 Oslo Accords, in four stages.  In exchange, the Palestinian Authority agreed to return to the bargaining table to negotiate a peace agreement with Israel.  US Secretary of State John Kerry is responsible for the deal and is overseeing the negotiations.
Following the first two prisoner releases, in August and October, similar construction announcements were made, also prompting condemnation.  However, building did not scuttle the peace talks.
Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon hinted at the expected announcement, saying, “I think it is our right to build, certainly according to our understandings and agreements with the Americans. And in accordance with that, we shall continue to build.”
Meanwhile, PA Minister for Prisoners’ Affairs Issa Karake told Maariv on Thursday, “Unlike the release of prisoners, which advances peace talks and creates hope that a [peace] agreement can be reached, the building of settlements scuttles the possibility of moving forward [with negotiations].”  He added, “It’s clear to everyone now that the Israeli government is killing the peace process.”
Israel’s Channel 10 News put the expected number of new housing units at 1,000-2,000.
All of this comes at a time when Palestinian terror against Israeli targets is on the rise.  With a foiled bus bombing Sunday, rocket fire early Monday, and a sniper attack Tuesday, many have called for the Israeli government to cancel next week’s scheduled prisoner release.
The PA has yet to issue a condemnation of Tuesday’s attack, which killed a civilian worker, 22-year-old Salah Shukri Abu Latif.  This prompted criticism from an official spokesperson for PM Netanyahu.  “We are disappointed that so far Abu Mazen [Mahmoud Abbas] has not condemned these acts as we would expect from someone who is supposed to be a partner in peace talks,” wrote spokesman Ofir Gendelman on Twitter.
According to Ya’alon, the decision to release the prisoners anyway “stems from broader considerations.”
Perhaps surprisingly, Naftali Bennett’s Habayit Hayehudi (Jewish Home) party was not pushing for the construction announcement.  According to Israel’s Channel 2 News, the party feels the linkage of prisoner releases to West Bank settlement construction is damaging to the settlement enterprise.  The party therefore chose to stay out of the discussion, so if the construction goes ahead, it would be at the personal choice of Netanyahu.

Iranian Lawmakers Call for Further Uranium Enrichment
Posted by: Lea Speyer  December 27, 2013 , 9:42 am

“Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are more and mightier than we.” (Exodus 1:9)
Ayatollah Khamenei

News of out Iran is not promising. 100 Iranian legislators presented a draft that called for the state to enrich its uranium to 60%. This would cause activity to resume at the Arak heavy water reactor and would be in direct violation of the recent interim agreements between Iran and the P5+1. The agreement hopes to halt Iran’s enrichment program at Arak, limit uranium enrichment to five percent, and reduce Iran’s already existing uranium stockpile to 20% enriched uranium.
Iranian lawmaker Seyyed Mehdi Mousavinejad stated “If the bill is approved, the government will be obliged to complete nuclear infrastructure at Fordo and Natanz facilities. If sanctions against Iran are ratcheted up, new sanctions are imposed, the country’s nuclear rights are violated and the Islamic Republic of Iran’s peaceful nuclear rights are ignored by members of 5+1group.”
The claimed purpose of enriching uranium up to levels of 60% is to help fuel submarine engines should talks fail and more sanctions are imposed on Iran. The recent draft by the Iranian Parliament comes as a reaction to a US Congressional bill proposed by lawmakers to strengthen sanctions against Iran, including boycotting Iranian oil exports, engineering, construction, and mining industries.

Israel should Ignore Obama’s Lame-Duck Quacking
Posted by: Michael Freund  December 27, 2013 , 9:38 am
If the various rumors and reports are true, January may prove to be one tough month for US-Israeli relations.
According to several accounts, the Obama administration is said to be gearing up to push Israel into a corner by offering its own proposals regarding how to shape a deal with the Palestinians.
With the clock ticking on the nine months allotted for an agreement to be reached, US Secretary of State John Kerry likely will be twisting Israel’s arm, and applying pressure to other anatomical parts, to coerce the Jewish state into capitulation.
Under normal circumstances, it would be difficult for an Israeli premier to rebuff a concerted, full-court press from Washington, particularly when it involves an issue about which both the president and America’s top diplomat seem overly obsessed.
But these are not normal circumstances, and it behooves Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to stand firm and spurn any pressure that may be applied.
For although Barack Obama still has another three years in office, he is already starting to look a heck of a lot like a lame duck, one whose quacking can and should be ignored.
Consider the following: according to a Washington Post/ ABC poll released last week, Obama is closing out his fifth year in office with the lowest approval rating at this point in a presidency since Richard “Tricky Dick” Nixon. That is not the kind of company that an occupant of the White House likes to keep.
The survey found that just 43 percent of Americans approve of the job that Obama is doing, which is less than the 47% that George W. Bush managed to garner at the end of his fifth year in office.
In other words, Obama is now less liked at this point in his presidency than even Bush was.
A Fox News national poll conducted jointly by Democratic and Republican polling firms produced similar results, with Obama earning an approval rating of 41% versus a 53% disapproval rating.
Even worse, the survey showed that more Americans now view him as dishonest rather than honest, with 45% saying Obama is trustworthy and 49% saying he is not.
By contrast, in 2009, a whopping 73% gave him a thumbs-up for honesty.
Even the normally pliant and reliably liberal American media has begun to wonder aloud about whether Obama is morphing into a Democratic version of Bush the younger, much of whose second term was spent in irrelevancy.
You might be wondering: does any of this really matter? Obama is still the president.
Actually, it does matter, both politically and diplomatically.
As Commentary editor John Podhoretz noted in a recent New York Post column, “the president has gone from being someone in charge of events to someone who is being buffeted about by them – and once a leader loses his hold on the levers of power it’s very difficult to get them back.”
Obama’s loss of standing and sliding popularity serve to feed into the perception that he too is entering an early lame-duck phase, when a president no longer enjoys the ability to ram through policies and steer the ship of state as he sees fit.
And Democrats are already looking ahead nervously to the 2014 midterm Congressional elections, when Republicans are expected to make big gains in both the House and Senate. Many Democrats worried about keeping their seats are unlikely to cuddle up to a weakened president who is increasingly viewed as incompetent and untrustworthy, nor will they be rushing to get behind any new initiatives he may try to pursue.
On top of it all, Obama has plenty of headaches at home, from the ongoing NSA surveillance scandal to the disastrous roll-out of Obamacare, which is causing chaos and confusion among millions of Americans.
Simply put, there is no reason for Israel to kowtow to a fading president desperate for a foreign policy “win,” whether the issue is Iran or the Palestinians.
Where our security is at stake or our existence is threatened, we must not be afraid of standing up to an American president, particularly one as anemic and ineffectual as Obama.
As the great comedian Bob Hope once noted, “The only thing chicken about Israel is their soup.” Let’s keep it that way.

Sniper Fire, Police Stabbing: New Terror Attacks Threaten Israel
Posted by: Ahuva Balofsky  December 24, 2013 , 3:21 pm

“Be strong and of good courage, fear not, nor be affrighted at them; for the LORD thy God, He it is that doth go with thee; He will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.’” (Deuteronomy 31:6)
Sniper Fire, Police Stabbing: New Terror Attacks Threaten Israel

In what is being referred to as the third terror attack in as many days, sniper fire from Gaza severely injured a civilian Israeli defense worker who was repairing parts of the border fence Tuesday afternoon. The man, aged 22, was shot by a single bullet that entered his upper torso. He was rushed by helicopter to Soroka Hospital in Beer Sheva where he later died. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to the recent attack by stating “This is a very severe incident and we will not let it go unanswered. Our policy until now has been to act beforehand and to respond in force and this is how we will act regarding this incident as well.”
A second terror attack took place late Monday when an Israeli policeman was stabbed at Kikar Adam just north of Jerusalem.  The victim, a 41-year-old man, suffered moderate to serious wounds when he was stabbed in the back with a 6-inch knife.  The knife was left behind when the suspect fled under fire.

6 Things to Do in Bethlehem Around Christmas Time
Posted by: Lea Speyer  December 25, 2013 , 2:49 pm

“Boaz arrived from Bethlehem. He said to the harvesters ‘God be with you!’ and they answered him ‘May God bless you!’” (Ruth 2:4)
1. Visit the Holy Sites
Tour the Nativity Grotto and Basilica of the Nativity – Originally built in 327 AD by Constantine and his mother, the Church of the Nativity sits over the cave that is believed to be the birthplace of Jesus of Nazareth. The Church holds significant religious meaning to both Christians and Muslims and is a World Heritage Site.  Walk along Star Street (begins at Star Square), which is the path Mary and Joseph took when coming to the Nativity Grotto. All Christmas parades walk through Star Street towards the Basilica in commemoration.

Shepherd’s Field – Leading from the East of Bethlehem to Beit Sahour, Shepherd’s Field is the location where the shepherd’s saw the Star of the Nativity. This is also thought to be the area where Ruth and Naomi collected wheat behind harvesters on their way to Bethlehem from Moab (Ruth 2:1-6).

The Old City of Bethlehem is located in the center of the city and is made up of seven quarters (6 Christian and 1 Muslim), laid out around Manger Square in a mosaic style.

2. Participate in a Candle Procession

Later in the evening, take part in the annual Shepherd’s Nights Festival’s candle procession from Shepherd’s Fields to Souk el-Shab, located in the center of Bethlehem.

Christmas is celebrated three times a year in Bethlehem! Christians of various denominations reside in the ancient city and follow different calendars. Catholics and Lutherans celebrate Christmas day on the 25th of December, Orthodox and Oriental Christians on the 7th of January, and Armenian Christians on the 19th of January. On each Christmas Eve, solemn parades throughout the city mark the approaching holiday. Mass at the Church of the Nativity take place each Christmas Eve.

Christian Arabs Most Likely to Graduate High-School in Israel

A recent study published by the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) reported that 161,000 Christians reside in Israel which makes up 2% of the total population. The majority of Christians in Israel, 79.8%, are Christian Arabs while the remaining Christian population is made up of immigrants from the Former Soviet Union who came to live in Israel under the Law of Return.

Most Christian Arabs live in the northern section of Israel, with the highest concentration residing in Nazareth (22,400) and Haifa (14,600). In the center of Israel, Jerusalem has a population of approximately 11,900 Christian Arabs. Christian communities that are not of Arab descent are concentrated mostly in Haifa (3,400), Tel Aviv (3,100), and Jerusalem.
When it comes to marriage, the Christian population in Israel is in no hurry to rush to the altar. The median age of Christian brides is 24.4, which is three years older than Muslim brides, two years older than Druze brides, and a year and a half younger than Jewish brides. CBS also reported that Christian women in Israel will bear 2.2 children during their lifetime which is the lowest number amongst the numerous religious groups in Israel.
Christian Arabs have fewer children when compared to the rest of the Israeli population. The average number of children in Christian Arab families is 1.9, compared to the Jewish population (2.3) and Muslim population (2.9). The Christian Arab community as a whole is also shown to have the lowest number of children under the age of 19, with the average rate of people over the age of 65.
The study also showed that within the Arabic education system, Christian Arab students top Israel’s matriculation system and achieve a matriculation rate of 69%. Druze students matriculate at a rate of 64% and Muslim students at only 50%. Christian Arab students also are shown to have the highest rates of receiving national exam scores that are high enough to be accepted into universities. Approximately 61% of Christian Arabs are eligible for university studies, compared to 45% of Druze students and only 35% of Muslim students in the Arab community.

Israeli Aid Workers Trapped in South Sudan Coup Attempt
Posted by: Ahuva Balofsky  December 18, 2013 , 4:31 pm

“…and they shall fight every one against his brother, and everyone against his neighbour; city against city, and kingdom against kingdom.” (Isaiah 9:2)

Three Israeli aid workers from IsraAID, a non-profit NGO “committed to providing life-saving disaster relief and long term support,” have taken refuge along with thousands of others as rebels attempt to overthrow the government in South Sudan.

The Republic of South Sudan is the world’s youngest country, having been formed in July 2011.  It was carved out of Sudan after years of conflict between the predominantly Islamic north and the non-Muslim residents of the southern region.  South Sudan is populated primarily by Animists (those who hold tribal beliefs) and Christians.

According to the International Christian Concern, an advocacy group linking free Christians with those suffering persecution, since the secession of South Sudan from the North, the Sudanese government has engaged in unrestrained intimidation and discrimination of Christians living in the North.  Not only has this persecution generated a mass-exodus of many Northern Christians, but it has had greatly damaged the political structure of Sudanese opposition groups.

The ongoing turmoil and conflict, both between the two countries and within South Sudan itself, has created a sense of desperation among those who had hoped for a better life.  South Sudan promised to offer religious freedom to all, but reports of abuses by those in power abound.  As well, armed tribal conflicts continue unabated in the fledgeling state.

The current coup is said to have been spearheaded by former Vice President Riek Machar, who was fired in July along with the rest of the cabinet.  Machar accuses President Salva Kiir of acting to consolidate his power and remain at the top indefinitely.  He warned after he was fired that for South Sudan to survive, it cannot tolerate “one man’s rule or it cannot tolerate dictatorship.”

President Kiir claimed the government is now  “in full control of the military situation” in Juba, where the attempted coup took place.  He ordered a dawn-till-dusk curfew in the entire city.

IsraAID founding director Shachar Zahavi spoke to The Times of Israel about the three aid workers trapped in South Sudan.  “I hope they are not in danger as long as they stay away from the streets. They are in a closed compound.  I hope we will be able to evacuate them within a day or two.

“All foreigners are just waiting in closed compounds, and we are waiting to see how to evacuate the team,” he said.  The borders and airports were all closed following the uprising, but Israel is coordinating with the French and American embassies in Juba, as well as with the Israeli Foreign Ministry, to extricate the three.

Sporadic communication with those trapped has been primarily through email.  One of the IsraAID workers, Ophelie Namiech, wrote the following: ”In the early morning, residents of my compound, including local staff, were all maddened, not knowing what was going on. We realized we were stuck, as movement was impossible amidst gunfire. It sounded like we were in the middle of a warzone.

“Information remains limited. Communication networks are interrupted from time to time. Hundreds of civilians have been seeking refuge in the UN compounds, a large number being women and children,” she said.

Hilde Johnson, special representative of the United Nations secretary-general for South Sudan, said in a statement that the UN mission in Juba was “deeply concerned” over the fighting that broke out late Sunday and which continued Monday.

“As the Special Representative of the Secretary General I urge all parties in the fighting to cease hostilities immediately and exercise restraint,” the statement said. “I have been in touch regularly with the key leaders, including at the highest levels to call for calm.”

1 Druze, 1 Muslim, 1 Jew, 3 Zionists
While American academics have recently joined the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement as reported by BIN, the Zionist organization Im Tirtzu organized a conference held yesterday in Tel Aviv. The Zionist Conference for Human Rights featured speakers from Israel’s minority communities who defended Israel from their own personal and first hand experiences. According to Im Tirtzu’s Facebook page, “Human rights have always been an integral part of Zionism, but in recent years, those who seek to delegitimize the State of Israel have monopolized and utilized these ideas in order to spearhead their campaign against the State of Israel.” Here is a short summary of 3 speakers from yesterday’s Zionist Conference for Human Rights:
