If we could let go of the idea of bringing correction to everyone else, if we could resist the urge to point out every deficiency we think we see in others, if we could stop trying to be the Holy Spirit to everyone and just learn to be a good brother or sister, letting our Father decide the appropriate discipline, we will find that God is well able to direct our brothers and sisters without us getting in His way. And, we may discover that the problem isn’t really that other brother or sister at all...

Dear Friends,

I've gotten a mixed response to my article on "Should You Fear God?"

Well, if you aren't where you need to be, then yes you should be afraid of God.

But...

It seems a lot of people think being afraid of God is a normal part of the Christian experience.

Well, it may be normal for THEM but that does not make it normal.

I believe that fear is the fruit of Religion, not Relationship.

"For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, Abba, Father" (Rom. 8:15).

Fear-based religion is for people who don't know God very well. Religion and fear bring us into bondage and make God inaccessible and scary.

Why would anyone want to go back to that?

"Perfect love casts out fear... he that fears is not perfected in love" (1 John 4:8).

Your view of God also affects your view of Revelation.

Some see it as a depressing and scary book; I see it God saving the earth and rescuing mankind from the deception of the devil.

But the thing about fear is you can't argue it out of people - they either see it or they don't.

This week's lesson is a good example.

Are you afraid of God's wrath - or looking forward to it as a refining fire to purge the residue of Self?

Is judgment an instrument of torture and punishment, or a tool of repentance and deliverance?

Are you trying to escape tribulation, or do you embrace it as a necessary means to achieve spiritual maturity?

Hey Elaine,

Last week we saw how the devil uses the Beast and the False Prophet to wage war against the saints.

We even saw that for a brief period of time, the Beast will overcome the saints and effectively "shut down" the Testimony of Jesus.

But, just as Jesus Himself was "shut down" on the cross, He arose on the third day and cannot die again.

This foreshadows the resurrection of the Remnant, which we see depicted in this week's study.

This week also takes us to the final harvest, one of the three harvests of Israel.

The first harvest was the barley harvest or "firstfruits," in the spring just after Passover.

The second harvest was the wheat harvest, which occurred at Pentecost.

The final harvest was the grape harvest, which occurred just before the Feast of Tabernacles.

In other words...

The Book of Revelation follows this prophetic calendar, indicating that the past, present and future dealings of God with mankind will occur along this general timeline.

What does that mean?

Should You 'Fear' God?

The first mention of fear in the Bible is in the context of man being afraid of God.

You really need to see that a religious person trying to please God is just as ignorant as a “sinner” trying to hide from God. Neither one of them have a right understanding of God. Everything they do is based on fear. One refuses to go to church because he’s afraid of God. The other goes to church because he’s afraid of God. Isn’t it interesting how fear can drive people to do the exact opposite things!

What is driving you? What’s motivating you? What’s controlling you? Fear, or Love?

Here's something to think about...

Jesus is Lord of All (Acts 10:36), and He is Savior of All (1 Tim. 4:10).

Be we do not yet SEE all things put under Him (Heb. 2:8).

One way of approaching the Book of Revelation is to view it in terms of God showing us how all things will be put under Christ so that we finally SEE Him as Lord and Savior of All.

Why can't we see it now?

Because there is a spiritual force that opposes the preeminence Christ and deceives the whole world (including the "Christian" world).

Last week we saw that the Cross of Christ meant the casting out of the Dragon to earth, where he is angry because he knows his time is short.

See, the victory is won but the battle isn't over.

Because now the Dragon now makes war with the Remnant of the Seed, the Overcomers.

So Revelation 13 helps us better understand how the devil deceives the nations on a mass scale - and even the Elect - by blinding us from the Testimony of Jesus and putting us in a church-centered prison.

In other words: a Religion "about" Jesus is the devil's masterpiece.

That Religion ABOUT Jesus has become a counterfeit system that competes with the freedom and joy of a Relationship WITH Jesus.

It's always a false prophet claiming to speak for God that screws people up.

Looks like a Lamb, but speaks like a Dragon.

Get it?

5 Reasons Why
Fellowship Eludes Us

If everyone is looking for fellowship, why is fellowship so hard to find? And once we have found it, why is it so hard to maintain it?

When God begins to bring you out of church and into a deeper relationship with Himself, there is a lot of unlearning that has to take place – particularly in the area of fellowship.

It has been said that every lost person has a Christ-shaped void in their heart that only Christ can fill. A similar thing can be said of believers who come out of the religious system. When God calls us to be with Him “outside the camp,” there is a church-shaped void in our heart where church used to be. This void makes us feel restless and insecure and empty. We remember the fellowship we used to enjoy, and we begin to long for it. Pretty soon, we begin to look for things to fill the church-shaped void in our heart.

Here’s a radical thought: what if the church-shaped void in our heart isn’t meant to be filled with anything? What if God intends for us to get rid of that church-shaped void and stop trying to fill it? Isn’t the church-shaped void in our heart really just an idol? And that idol not only hinders our spiritual growth and maturity in a Christ-centered faith, it also hinders our relationships with one another and prevents us from entering into real Spirit-and-Truth fellowship with one another.

Hey Elaine,

If Jesus is Lord, how do we explain the existence of evil in the world?

If satan is defeated, why does wickedness seem to prosper?

Did you know that there is something in this universe that is opposed to the preeminence of Christ?

Did you know that there is something actively fighting against the idea of Jesus being Lord of All?

People say, "It's the liberal media," or "it's all those sinners," or "it's the church system."

But all the things people point to as "the problem" are merely tools - pawns in an elaborate cosmic chessboard being orchestrated by an evil intelligence.

Not for a minute do I believe that the devil is anywhere close to being equal to God.

The devil uses deception precisely because that is the last remaining power available to it.

2,000 years ago, Paul remarked that "we are not ignorant of [the devil's] devices."

Yet, today, I fear that not only are we grossly ignorant when it comes to spiritual wickedness in high places, we actually perpetuate it without realizing it.

For example, while many people (including God's people) are busy fighting flesh and blood, getting embroiled in religious disputes and political arguments, the real battle is being waged in the spiritual realm; everything else is a distraction, designed to keep us weak and foolish and earth-bound.

The Book of Revelation exposes the deception and sets us free.

Scripture takes us behind the scenes of world events and shows us the origin and the nature of this spiritual conflict, centered around "The Overcomers" who bear the Testimony of Jesus, and the Dragon who makes war with the saints and deceives the nations.

Yes, "the truth will make you free" - but first, it will make you mad.

Perhaps the truth will stir up some righteous anger, or maybe a holy motivation to get into the Word of God and fight the good fight.

I consider this week's lesson to be "Spiritual Warfare 101" for those who are interested in WHY there is a battle at all, and WHO is waging it.

It also contains unique and important spiritual history that helps us to interpret the present.

So far we have been focused on outward signs and plagues affecting the earth.

But behind all this is a spiritual war with the souls of billions in the balance.

Hi Elaine,

Is the Book of Revelation supposed to be interpreted literally, or is it symbolic?

Well, do you really believe that Jesus is a lamb with horns and a sword coming out of His mouth?

Seems hard to take that literally, so it must be symbolic.

Is the devil really a snake, a dragon, and a beast - or a shape-shifting monster that becomes all these things?

You see the problem with interpreting the Bible "just the way it is" without applying some spiritual wisdom and common sense.

Our weekly study is useful for sharpening your discernment and helping you consider other ways of looking at Scripture.

Last week we were just getting into the discussion on the temple and the two witnesses of Revelation 11.

In a dozen different ways, Scripture tells us that WE are the temple.

But people still expect a literal temple to be built in Jerusalem.

*Sigh*

And they'll probably build one and claim they are fulfilling Scripture.

Anyway, if the temple is literal, than the two witnesses must be literal, right?

So off we go into the land of speculation...

Enoch and Elijah?

Peter and James?

Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins?

But what if the "two witnesses" (like the Lamb and the Dragon and the temple) aren't literal, but symbolic?

A Warning to the Lukewarm

Our heart’s desire is to see God’s people delivered from anything that keeps them in bondage, anything that hinders them from spiritual maturity, and anything that distracts them from the simplicity of Christ.

I’ve said this before, and I’ll be very clear in saying it again: that in my opinion, Organized Religion is the greatest hindrance to a real relationship with Jesus that I know of.

Now, since I believe that “Church” is the greatest hindrance to spiritual growth and maturity, naturally I’m going to encourage God’s people to think seriously about where they go, and what they support, and why; and I’m going to challenge this religious system that we have created. If I didn’t speak out against it, and challenge it, and question it (while all the while I believed it was hurting more people than it helped) then I wouldn’t be honest.

The reason we speak these things is because of our love and concern for God’s people. And it’s that love and concern that motivates us to speak out against abusive leadership, and abusive groups, and abusive pastors and prophets, and the entire religious system that keeps God’s people in a kind of spiritual ghetto – keeping them down, holding them back, or worse, lulling them into a false sense of security and fellowship that is based on something other than the Lord Jesus Christ...

There is a simple, three-step process I recommend for studying Scripture:

1. What does it say? (Translation)

2. What does it mean? (Interpretation)

3. How does it apply? (Application)


These questions become especially useful this week in our study of the Book of Revelation.

We have learned many different ways of interpreting Revelation, and my personal view is that it could be interpreted in more than one way.

So we come to chapter 11 and it seems really confusing!

The Two-Fold Word of the Cross

For many years I was only taught one aspect of the Cross – that is, the cross on which Jesus died for me. That is all I knew, and so that is all I taught.

There is another side to this Cross, another dimension of the same truth, which is not as well-known, and is hardly preached at all. As a result, many believers are content to embrace the “Sinner’s Cross”; that is, they have confessed Jesus as Savior, and they understand and accept Him as their Substitute. It is certainly true that Jesus is our Substitute, and that He died on the Cross for us. But as we have said, there is a two-fold work of the Cross...

Hey Elaine,

Another end-of-the-world prophecy has come and gone, and here we are.

I think this illustrates why I am studying the Book of Revelation from a Christ-centered perspective.

What a lot of people put out as "truth" is really only their speculation.

But with a Christ-centered perspective, setting dates and connecting the dots between Bible prophecy and current events is unnecessary.

Instead, I show you many different layers of interpretation, overlapping in some places, but all pointing to the fulfillment of God's eternal purpose in Christ: "That in all things He should have the preeminence."

Some things (such as times and seasons, "when will these things be," etc.) are not meant to be known.

Inquiring into "when" something will happen, without fully appreciating exactly what will happen and why, is a good example of getting focused on the wrong thing.

Many prophetic themes are hidden in plain sight but are only made known to those who have ears to hear, or to those who search the Scripture diligently.

We will see this week's study - a good example of God reserving some things for Himself, while revealing other aspects of His purpose.

Hi Elaine,

Hi Elaine,

Daniel 7:10 talks about 10,000 X 10,000 standing before the throne of God to be judged.

That's 100 million.

A big number, right?

But you CAN number it - it's not beyond calculation.

Revelation 9 talks about a destructive army of 200 million.

That's a big army - yet you can still number it.

But there is another group of people in the Bible so big that no man can number them.

And you find them in a most unexpected place.

Here they are in Revelation 7 - "a great multitude" of people surrounding the throne, worshiping and praising God.

So many that "no man" can number them!

Compared to the "millions" that can be numbered, I would guess the ones you can't number are in the billions.

Wait - if only "a few" will be saved, how do we find this great, innumerable number of people praising God in white robes?

Hmmm... maybe Scripture is showing us something that we have failed to properly appreciate.

Entering His Rest

Hey Elaine,

False prophecies always sounds more compelling than the truth.

According to some folks, the "end of the world" is happening on September 23.

If it is, I say, "Great! I hope so. The sooner, the better."

Except people have been saying this every September 23 for a few years now.

I doubt it will happen, because I don't think God will reward all those Internet hacks.

The rest of us will continue to plod along very slowly through the Book of Revelation, prayerfully considering the many layers of interpretation and meaning - not setting dates or creating hysterical predictions, but seeing the plan and purpose of God unfolding.

His purpose is to seek and to save the lost, not destroy them.

And if you've been following this teaching series then you know why the 7 Jewish feasts are "interesting" for their spiritual symbolism and prophetic significance - but that does not necessarily mean we can set our watch or mark our calendar by them.

Regardless, I'm going to keep doing what I've been doing until the Lord returns or calls me home.

Religion, or Spirit and Truth?

Both were brothers. Both gave an offering to the Lord. Outwardly speaking everything seemed fine. But the Bible says that “the Lord accepted Abel and his offering, but the Lord did not accept Cain and rejected his offering” (Genesis 4:4b,5a).

At first glance the Lord’s decision to accept Abel and reject Cain seems rather arbitrary. Both worshiped the Lord, and both brought the Lord a sacrifice. What makes one acceptable and the other unacceptable?
