Donald Trump offers full endorsement for Roy Moore

After weeks of wavering messages, President Donald Trump tweeted his clearest endorsement yet of Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore.

Trump’s unequivocal message of support came after weeks of sending mixed signals on whether he would throw his weight behind the embattled Alabama Republican. Trump had previously criticized Democrat Doug Jones without offering an explicit endorsement of Moore.

Trump endorses Moore
Since allegations surfaced that Moore made unwanted advances on multiple women, one as young as 14, in his 30s, prominent Republicans have called on the Alabama Republican to drop out.

With the December 12 special election just over a week away, Trump sent out a surprise blast:

Trump criticized Jones for his connections to top-ranking Democrats, calling him a “Pelosi/Schumer puppet.”

“Putting Pelosi/Schumer Liberal Puppet Jones into office in Alabama would hurt our great Republican Agenda of low on taxes, tough on crime, strong on military and borders,” he added.

The beleaguered Senate race candidate was thankful for the president’s support.

“Thankful for President Trump’s support. The America First agenda will #MAGA. Can’t wait to help him #DrainTheSwamp,” he tweeted.

Trump to campaign near Alabama
Trump will hold a campaign rally in Pensacola, Fla., on December 9, just days before the election. The White House has said that Trump would not travel to Alabama to campaign for Moore.

“The president is not planning any trip to Alabama at this time, and frankly his schedule doesn’t permit him to do anything between now and election day,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.

The rally will take place just 20 miles from the Alabama-Florida border. While it is unclear if Trump will rally to Moore’s defense, his Monday endorsement makes that seem likely.

Trump’s trickling endorsement
Trump’s Monday tweet was the president’s first direct endorsement of Moore. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders initially said that Trump expected Moore to “do the right thing” by dropping out if the allegations were true.

Trump then said on November 21 that Alabamans must elect Moore to keep “liberal” Jones from winning.

“I can tell you one thing for sure: We don’t need a liberal person in there, a Democrat, Jones,” Trump said.

Stopping short of a full endorsement, Trump came to Moore’s defense, noting that Moore had denied the accusations. Moore has repeatedly denied the accusations.

“And I do have to say 40 years is a long time,” Trump said. “He’s run eight races and this has never come up, so 40 years is a long time.”

Before Monday’s endorsement, Trump continued to criticize Jones, tying him to Schumer and Pelosi. A CBS News Poll released Sunday show Moore leading Jones by six points.

“Donald Trump called Roy Moore this morning,” revealed Moore’s campaign consultant Drew Messer on Twitter. “Great conversation. His parting words were ‘Go get them Roy.’ Thank you, POTUS, for supporting the Judge.”

Messer told Breitbart News that the president confirmed his strong support for Moore and called him a “fighter.”
Moore’s wife Kayla also revealed that Trump had called Moore on Monday.
“Judge Moore just got off the phone with President Trump – we have his full support!” she wrote. “Thank you Mr. President! Let’s MAGA!”
