Media mogul Oprah Winfrey is matching funds with a high-powered Hollywood couple and has agreed to chip in $500,000 for students protesting gun violence and calling for extreme firearm regulations.

Added to the $500,000 donated by George and Amal Clooney, that puts a cool million into the hands of a group of adolescents. What could possibly go wrong?

Clooneys get the ball rolling
In response to the mass shooting at a Parkland, Fla. high school last Wednesday that took 17 lives, the Clooneys said they would be marching in support of the survivors.

“Our family will be there on March 24 to stand side by side with this incredible generation of young people from all over the country,” they said in a statement released by George Clooney’s representative, Stan Rosenfield, according to CNBC.

But the Clooneys didn’t stop there. The statement continued:

In the name of our children Ella and Alexander, we’re donating 500,000 dollars to help pay for this groundbreaking event. Our children’s lives depend on it.

Oprah hops aboard the bandwagon
Not to be outdone, Winfrey jumped aboard the gun control train. Before the ink was even dry on the Clooney statement, she added her own two cents — er, half a million to the “March for our Lives” event. She tweeted:

George and Amal, I couldn’t agree with you more. I am joining forces with you and will match your $500,000 donation to ‘March For Our Lives.’ These inspiring young people remind me of the Freedom Riders of the 60s who also said we’ve had ENOUGH and our voices will be heard.

Lawmakers face increasing pressure
Last week’s shooting spree has sparked a flurry of criticism of America’s gun laws by politicians and media.
Before the bodies had even been removed from the halls of Marjory Douglas Stoneman High School, Sen. Bill Nelson, a Florida Democrat, called for immediate Congressional action.
“To those who say it’s not the time to talk about gun violence because it’s too soon, we don’t want to politicize right after a tragedy … then I would ask, when is the right time?” Nelson said. “How many more times do we want to do this? How many more folks have to die?”
Sen. Marco Rubio, Nelson’s Florida Republican counterpart, urged caution and stated the obvious — gun control laws generally don’t work.

“If we do something, it should be something that works. And the struggle up to this point has been that most of the proposals that have been offered would not have prevented, not just yesterday’s tragedy, but any of those in recent history,” Rubio said.

Speaking with CBS News Miami, Rubio echoed the beliefs of Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi in calling for the death penalty.

“I have concerns in the broader sense about how not everyone gets equal representation in death panels,” he told the station. “But in this particular case, it’d be hard to argue against the death penalty.”
