More bad news in DHS guidelines

Dear Elaine,

“Don’t use training premised on theories with little or no evidence to support them. Examples (from the report “Manufacturing the Muslim Menace”) of unsubstantiated theories include:
a. Many mainstream Muslim organizations have terrorist ties.

b. Mainstream Muslim organizations are fronts for Islamic political organizations whose true desire is to establish Sharia law in America. Muslim Americans are using democratic processes, like litigation and free speech, to subvert democracy and install Sharia law.”

So states the Department of Homeland Security report titled “Manufacturing the Muslim Menace.” See the Clarion Project story by Ryan Mauro below, which states that the report “defends the Brotherhood, saying it is a moderate group that wouldn’t use front groups in America.”

Don’t worry everyone. All this stuff about the Muslim Brotherhood, its front organizations in America (which our government treats as “mainstream Muslim organizations”), unindicted co-conspirators in the Holy Land Foundation terrorism financing case, organizations with ties to Hamas established by our own Justice Department…

…it’s all a “manufactured menace.”

One of the primary goals of the Muslim Brotherhood is to deceive and then co-opt our nation’s political and law enforcement leadership.

You have to hand it to the Muslim Brotherhood-connected leaders in America. That they can refrain from breaking out into hilarious public laughter at the gullibility of our Department of Homeland “Security” leadership demonstrates extraordinary discipline.

Shame on those in leadership who have willfully and blindly fallen for this massive deception.

U.S. Gov't: Radical Muslims Approved, Moderates Shunned

Counterterrorism trainers are told that U.S. Brotherhood groups' are not tied to terrorism. Yet the federal gov't has proved they are.

Shockingly, the advisory committee that likely influenced these guidelines includes numerous individuals affiliated with the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood.

The document says it is a list of “tips for federal, state and local government and law enforcement officials organizing CVE [Countering Violent Extremism], cultural awareness, counter-radicalization, or counterterrorism training.” It was produced by the Department of Homeland Security Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties in cooperation with the National Counterterrorism Center.

The DHS suggestions in the document include:

The “Manufacturing the Muslim Menace” report cited depicts concerns about the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood as the fabrications of anti-Muslim bigots. Moreover, it defends the Brotherhood, saying it is a moderate group that wouldn’t use front groups in America.

The Federal Government Itself Provides Evidence to the Contrary

In reality, solid evidence exists to the contrary – evidence ironically from the federal government’s own determinations as well as documents from the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood itself including a 1991 U.S. Muslim Brotherhood explanatory memorandum that explicitly states: “[O]ur work in America is a kind of grand jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within.”

The Brotherhood memorandum lists “our organizations and the organizations of our friends.” The list includes “mainstream” Muslim-American groups—the very same groups which appear to have influenced these very same Department of Homeland Security guidelines (see below).

Specifically, the federal government designated the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) and the North American Islamic Trust (NAIT) as unindicted co-conspirators in the trial of the Holy Land Foundation for financing Hamas. Federal prosecutors labeled these three mainstream groups as U.S. Muslim Brotherhood entities in 2007. In 2009, the designations were upheld by District Court Judge Solis because of “ample” evidence linking them to Hamas.

The Clarion Project has broken numerous stories about other Islamist groups doing exactly what the DHS dismisses in the current training document as “unsubstantiated theories.”

For example, a Pennsylvania-based group, Sankore Institute of Islamic-African Studies International (SIIASI), tells Muslims to engage in "litigation jihad" to advance Sharia law in America.

A California-based group, the Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America (AMJA), which issues authoritative fatwas, or religious declarations, said in a 2007 Arabic paper presented at one of its conferences it recommends that Muslims become judges and use deception to implement sharia law to the best of their ability. To call their rulings unsettling would be a gross understatement.

These are important facts but the DHS guidelines would leave law enforcement personnel ignorant of them.

Judge muzzles speech!

Dear Elaine,

A federal judge in Michigan has ruled that law enforcement officers were justified in muzzling the free speech of a group of Christians.

The Christians were standing on sidewalks at an international Arab festival in Dearborn, Michigan. In response to their signs and public preaching, a mob of Muslim youth gathered and pelted them with various objects.



Law enforcement officers intervened, but instead of arresting anyone in the mob they warned the Christians to cease their activities or be arrested.

The judge ruled that the mob violence justified the intervention by the officersagainst the Christians. See the WorldNetDaily story below (highlights added).

In other words, because the Muslim mob reacted angrily with violence, the officers had a duty to muzzle the speech rather than stop the violence.

Stunning.

The message is loud and clear: If you are a Muslim, and you object to speech you don’t like, you can react with violence, because government authorities will reward your violence by muzzling the speech you don’t like.

JUDGE GOES OFF DEEP END TO SHUT UP CHRISTIANS

A federal judge has issued a startling ruling that suppressing Christian speech is allowed when Muslims threaten violence because they’re upset over the message.

The ruling from Judge Patrick J. Duggan in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan granted Wayne County’s motion for summary judgment of a lawsuit brought by a team of Christians who were badgered, bullied and targeted with garbage thrown by Muslims who disliked their message at last year’s Arab Fest in Dearborn, Mich.

Officials with American Freedom Law Center, who have been arguing the case on behalf of the Christians, also said the judge denied AFLC’s motion requesting that the court issue an order preventing the Wayne County Sheriff and his deputies from restricting the Christian evangelists from displaying their banners and signs on the public sidewalks outside of this year’s Arab Festival.

It is scheduled for June.

In his ruling, Duggan said, “The court finds that the actual demonstration of violence here provided the requisite justification for [the Wayne County sheriffs'] intervention, even if the officials acted as they did because of the effect the speech had on the crowd.”

The case had been filed by the AFLC after several Christian evangelists were violently assaulted by a hostile Muslim mob while preaching at the festival last year in Dearborn, which has the largest concentration of Muslims in the United States.

The lawsuit, which will be appealed to a higher court, alleged the county, sheriff and deputies refused to protect the Christians from the attack, and they threatened to arrest the Christians for disorderly conduct if they did not halt their speech activity and immediately leave the festival area.

Robert Muise, AFLC co-founder and senior counsel, said, “The First Amendment was dealt a severe blow today as a result of this ruling. Indeed, this ruling effectively empowers Muslims to silence Christian speech that they deem offensive by engaging in violence. And pursuant to this ruling, the Christian speakers are now subject to arrest for engaging in disorderly conduct on account of the Muslim hecklers’ violent response to their speech. In short, this ruling turns the First Amendment on its head.”

David Yerushalmi, AFLC co-founder and senior counsel, added: “This fight for our fundamental right to freedom of speech does not stop here. We have filed an immediate appeal of this ruling to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. While Judge Duggan may have been the first judge to rule on this issue, he won’t be the last. Indeed, we are prepared to take this case to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary because it is imperative that our free speech rights not be subject to mob rule. This is the United States, not Benghazi.”

The violence developed at the 2012 events when Christian evangelists walking on public sidewalks surrounding the event while carrying signs with biblical messages were assaulted with stones, bottles and debris by attendees of the festival.

The signs that brought on the attack included “Know the God of the Bible” and “Trust Jesus.”

Several of the Christian demonstrators walked away bruised and bloodied from the attack. Ruben Israel, the leader of the group, pleaded with law enforcement officials to intervene so that the demonstration could continue peacefully.

However, the officer refused and demanded the Christians leave the premises or face arrest for disorderly conduct.

Shortly after, Israel contacted AFLC, which filed a federal lawsuit against Wayne County and several officials from the Wayne County sheriff’s office. AFLC charged that the officers failed to uphold their constitutional duty to protect the Christians.

A video has been released of the 2012 confrontation that explains authorities not only failed to protect the Christians, they ordered them to leave the Arab festival under threat of arrest for “disorderly conduct.”

However, not one Muslim was arrested for the attack, which left several members of the Christian group injured, the video says.

The video, and a related complaint, showed the crowd – reminiscent of a rock-throwing “intifada” scene from the Middle East – hurling a dizzying barrage of objects at the Christians, who were standing passively with their signs.

WND later learned that the Christian crowd had been carrying a pole with a pig’s head attached to the top, further angering the Muslim crowd. At the beginning of the video, Christian street preachers shout, “God is good, and God is not Allah!”

A the 2:17 mark of the video, the mob can be heard screaming: “You want to jump ‘em? C’mon, let’s go!”

One boy yells, “Let’s beat the sh-t out of them!”

A girl shouts, “Go home! Do you understand English?!”

Despite the attacks the Christians endured, a man identified in the video as Deputy Chief Dennis Richardson of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office tells them, “You’re a danger to the safety right now.”

Officers claim they don’t have the manpower to protect the Christians at the festival.

“Your safety is in harm’s way. You need to protect everybody,” said Deputy Chief Mike Jaafar of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. “You do have the option to leave. I just want to make that clear.”

Israel replied, “You have the option to stand with us” as Jaafar walked away, leaving the Christians to the mob.

When police leave, the crowd continues harassing the Christians and screaming profanities.

Then police begin escorting the Christians away from the crowd.

Richardson tells Israel: “We have the responsibility of policing the entire festival, and obviously your conduct is such that it’s causing a disturbance and is a direct threat to the safety of everyone here. Someone could get hurt. You already have blood on your face. One of the festival people, one of my officers, anybody can get hurt. Now we’re going to escort you out.”

Israel explains that the mob throws things and becomes more aggressive when police leave the scene.

“Part of the reason that they throw things on someone is because you tell them stuff that enrages them,” Richardson argues.

AFLC said the Christians were wearing shirts with Scripture quotes and Christian messages.

Stunning new revelations at House Benghazi hearing

Brave men risk their careers to dispute the Obama administration narrative

Congressional hearings are frequently tedious affairs, often dominated by Members of Congress making speeches rather than posing questions of witnesses.

Not yesterday’s House Benghazi hearing. See The New York Post story below (highlights added).

Stunning new revelations included:

Gregory Hicks, the Libya Deputy Mission Chief, testified that he called an acting assistant secretary to dispute Susan Rice’s claim made on Sunday news shows, that the attack was prompted by a video. Hicks said he was told to drop that line of questioning. Hicks further testified that, during the following month, his performance was criticized by superiors, including receiving a “blistering critique” of his management style. Hicks made it clear he felt he was being punished for refusing to go along with the administration narrative, and in fact was demoted. Hicks also testified that Cheryl Mills, then Chief of Staff for Hillary Clinton, told him he could not speak to Rep. Jason Chaffetz, when Chaffetz traveled to Libya to investigate, without a State Department attorney present. Hicks called the attorney “the minder”—in other words, the person assigned to monitor what Hicks said. Mark Thompson, an official with the State Department counterterrorism unit, testified that the Foreign Emergency Support Team (FEST), was not allowed to respond to the attack. Thompson noted that FEST was specifically created to respond to just such attacks.

For those of you who didn’t see the hearing, it’s worth watching, especially questions posed by Rep. Chaffetz, Rep. Jim Jordan, and a testy exchange between Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton and the three witnesses.

Here’s perhaps the most important thing the American people need to keep in mind.

These three witnesses jeopardized their careers, and certainly made enemies, because of their courage to come forward and tell what they knew. “Whistleblowers” are not treated kindly in Washington. Much of what they said directly contradicts the administration narrative of what happened and how the administration responded. These three men had nothing to gain—politically or career-wise—by doing so. What motivation could they possibly have to lie?

WASHINGTON — The US diplomat who was second in command in Libya during the fatal attack on the Benghazi consulate fought back tears yesterday when he told lawmakers about his colleagues’ final moments — and said he was “stunned” by administration claims it was sparked by a spontaneous protest.

Gregory Hicks, the first person to testify to Congress who was on the ground in Libya during the fateful night of the Sept. 11, 2012 siege, told a House committee that he was incredulous just five days later when UN Ambassador Susan Rice said on Sunday talk shows that the assault was not a terrorist attack.

EMOTIONAL: Gregory Hicks, the second in command in Libya at the time of the Benghazi attack, addresses Congress yesterday.

“My jaw dropped,” Hicks said. “I was embarrassed.”

Hicks riveted the audience in a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing room as he recalled the night.

“Shortly after we arrived at the annex, the mortars came in,” Hicks said. “The first was long. It landed actually among the Libyans that escorted our people. They took casualties for us that night.”

“The next three landed on the roof, killing Glen [Doherty] and Tyrone [Woods],” Hicks said, referring to the security operators who died in the attack. “They didn’t know whether any more mortars were going to come in, the accuracy was terribly precise.”

A career State Department diplomat, Hicks also told the panel yesterday that he was warned by upper agency officials not to talk to a congressman investigating the consulate assault — fueling GOP charges that politics were behind the administration’s response.

The order came after he began questioning Obama administration claims that the incident was not a terrorist attack, he said. Hicks got a call from Beth Jones, an acting assistant secretary to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, to stop questioning Washington’s stance that the attack was spurred by a protest, he said.

“I asked her why the ambassador said there was a demonstration when the embassy reported there was an attack,” Hicks said. “The sense I got is that I needed to stop my line of questioning.”

Hicks received another call from Clinton’s counselor and chief of staff, Cheryl Mills, angry that he met with Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah). Mills asked for a full report.

“She was very upset with me,” said Hicks, who said he was eventually demoted after the controversy.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) called Hicks’ testimony evidence that Clinton was involved in trying to suppress information.

“This goes right to the person next to Secretary Clinton,” Jordan said.

Former State Department spokesman Philippe Reines yesterday called the allegation untrue.

“Nobody was told to keep Chaffetz from speaking with anyone,” Reines told NBC News. “That’s completely at odds with the cooperative approach the department has taken with Congress.”

Hicks was one of the last people Ambassador Christopher Stevens, who was killed, talked to in a call reporting the attack. Hicks somberly recalled learning about Stevens’ death.

“It was the saddest phone call I’ve ever received in my life,” Hicks said, pausing to hold back his emotions.

Hicks joined Mark Thompson, acting deputy assistant secretary of state for counterterrorism, in telling lawmakers that efforts to get military help to the consulate were rebuffed. Special forces in Tripoli wanting to help were furious, Hicks said.

Democrats ripped into the witnesses, accusing committee Republicans of conducting a “highly partisan” political attack on the Obama administration.

“There is no place or no time that the American military wouldn’t be there to protect American lives if they possibly could get there,” Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) said.

Eric Nordstrom, the third whistle-blower to testify, was the diplomatic security officer and former regional security office in Libya. He blamed the administration for ignoring calls for more security in the country.

“It matters to the American public for whom we served and most importantly, it matters to the friends and family of Ambassador Stevens, Sean Smith, Glen Doherty, Tyrone Wood, who were murdered on Sept. 11,” Nordstrom said.

Latest on Benghazi


Dear Elaine,

The last few days we’ve seen a series of explosive reports on what really happened in Benghazi.

Even the “establishment media,” most of whom ignored the issue last fall, are now being forced to cover it. For example, see The Washington Post story below (highlights added).

You helped play a part in keeping the Benghazi investigation alive. The grassroots efforts of ACT! for America helped generate strong support for Congressman Frank Wolf’s resolution calling for a special, select committee to investigate what happened.

As The Hill reported on April 17th, House Speaker John Boehner was forced to more directly address the Benghazi issue, due to the growing support for the select committee.

Many in the media, and of course many Obama supporters, have argued it’s time to move beyond Benghazi. Hillary Clinton and John Kerry have both said as much.

We disagree.

As we’ve said before, it’s past time Americans knew the truth. Our national security and the families of the four dead men deserve no less.



Special Ops halted from responding to Benghazi attacks, U.S. diplomat says

As the weakly protected U.S. diplomatic compound in eastern Libya came under attack the night of Sept. 11, 2012, the deputy head of the embassy in Tripoli 600 miles away sought in vain to get the Pentagon to scramble fighter jets over Benghazi in a show of force that he said might have averted a second attack on a nearby CIA complex.

Hours later, according to excerpts of the account by the U.S. diplomat, Gregory Hicks, American officials in the Libyan capital sought permission to deploy four U.S. Special Operations troops to Benghazi aboard a Libyan military aircraft early the next morning. The troops were told to stand down.

Defense Department officials have said they had no units that could have responded in time to counter the attack in Benghazi, but Republicans on Capitol Hill have questioned whether the Obama administration could have saved lives with a nimbler, more assertive response. They say that the reluctance to send the Special Operations troops may have, at the very least, deprived wounded Americans in Benghazi of first aid.

Congressional investigators released a partial transcript of Hicks’s testimony Monday ahead of a hearing Wednesday at which he is scheduled to appear. His remarks are the first public account from a U.S. official who was in Libya at the time of the attacks about the options that were weighed as militants mobbed the American diplomatic outpost and CIA station in Benghazi, killing U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other government employees.

The new details are certain to reignite a debate over whether the Obama administration has been sufficiently forthcoming in its public accounting of the events and missteps that resulted in the first death of a U.S. ambassador in the line of duty in a generation. If Republicans in Congress succeed in portraying the administration’s response as feckless, the episode could dog any future political aspirations of Hillary Rodham Clinton, who was secretary of state when the attacks happened.

After the attacks ended without planes being scrambled or special forces dispatched, the lieutenant colonel in Tripoli who commanded the Special Operations team told Hicks he was sorry that his men had been held back.

“I’ve never been so embarrassed in my life that a State Department officer has bigger balls than someone in the military,” the officer told Hicks, according to the diplomat’s account. Hicks called that “a nice compliment.”

Hicks may have been the last American official to speak with Stevens. After an embassy security official ran into his residence to tell him about the initial attack, Hicks managed to get Stevens on the phone. “Greg, we’re under attack,” Stevens blurted out, according to Hicks. “My response is ‘Okay,’ and I’m about to say something else and the line clicks.”

The administration has said the independent review of the Benghazi assault was exhaustive, and State Department officials have vowed to implement reforms to make U.S. missions abroad safer. Republicans, however, say Hicks’s account suggests the administration has not been entirely truthful.

Compare and Contrast: What the State Department did, what Army leadership did

You can’t make this stuff up

Dear Elaine,

On May 3rd, Newsmax reported that in 2012 the State Department hired a Libyan militia group that had obvious sympathies for al Qaeda (see story below, highlights added) to help protect our consulate in Benghazi!

In fact, the militia group “…prominently displayed the al-Qaida flag on a Facebook page for months before the deadly attack.”

File this under “you can’t make this stuff up.”

Contrast that State Department decision with what Army leadership did to Lt. Col. Matthew Dooley.

In 2012, Gen. Martin Dempsey publicly reprimanded Lt. Col. Dooley for teaching a course entitled “Perspectives on Islam and Islamic Radicalism” at the National Defense University.

In spite of Lt. Col. Dooley’s sparkling record, Gen. Dempsey then ordered a negative evaluation of Lt. Col. Dooley and Dooley was reassigned.

But the travesty doesn’t end there. Lt. Col. Dooley received an Outstanding Officer Evaluation report in his new assignment, but was slapped down again, this time by Gen. Lloyd Austin (see story here).

So while our State Department hires a militia group sympathetic to al Qaeda to “protect” our consulate, two generals go out of their way to destroy the career of a West Point graduate and highly decorated officer because he dared to point out the threat posed by radical Islam.

When government officials can’t tell who is the enemy and who is a friend, we’re in trouble.

The Libyan militia group that the State Department hired to defend its embattled diplomatic mission in Benghazi had clear al-Qaida sympathies, and had prominently displayed the al-Qaida flag on a Facebook page for months before the deadly attack.

That organization, the February 17th Martyrs Brigade, was paid by the U.S. government to provide security at the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya. But there is no indication the Martyrs Brigade fulfilled its commitment to defend the mission on Sept. 11, when it came under attack.

The assault claimed the lives of four Americans: Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, information officer Sean Smith, and former Navy Seals Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty. Stevens was the first U.S. ambassador to be killed in the line of duty since 1979.

Several entries on the militia’s Facebook page openly profess sympathy for Ansar al-Sharia, the hardline Islamist extremist group widely blamed for the deadly attack on the mission. The U.S. State Department did not respond to a Newsmax request for an explanation as to why the February 17th Martyrs Brigade was hired to protect the mission.

On April 23, House Republicans released an interim progress report on its investigation into the Benghazi killings. It cited “numerous reports” that “the Brigade had extremist connections, and it had been implicated in the kidnapping of American citizens as well as in the threats against U.S. military assets.”

The report also stated that just a few days before Ambassador Stevens arrived in Benghazi, the Martyrs Brigade informed State Department officials they would no longer provide security as members of the mission, including Stevens, traveled through the city.

From June 2011 to July 2012, Eric Nordstrom, the Regional Security Officer for Libya at the time, documented over 200 security threats and violent incidents threatening to U.S. personnel in Libya. Some 50 of those incidents occurred in Benghazi.

Yet despite those threats, repeated requests for additional security from the mission went unheeded by the State Department, for reasons that remain unclear.

But perhaps the biggest question is why the State Department would hire a group that openly displayed its admiration for al-Qaida, and ask it to participate in the defense of its diplomatic mission.

Muslim support for sharia law growing in many parts of the world

The Muslim Brotherhood dream of a worldwide caliphate governed by sharia law continues to gain momentum around the world.

Consider the results of four years of public opinion surveys of Muslims conducted by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life (excerpts below; more detail here).

For instance, Pew found strong support for making sharia law the official law in 18 countries. In these 18 countries, 65% to 99% of Muslim respondents supported this.

As the Pew study notes:

…solid majorities in most of the countries surveyed across the Middle East and North Africa, sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia favor the establishment of sharia, including 71% of Muslims in Nigeria, 72% in Indonesia, 74% in Egypt and 89% in the Palestinian territories.

To paraphrase the line from The Sound of Music song, “How do you solve a problem like sharia?”

You acknowledge it exists, you understand what it is, and you resist it.

The Southern Border: Our Welcome Mat for Terrorists
We regularly intercept large numbers of individuals from terrorist-sponsoring nations.

There are at least 7,518 reasons to get the U.S./Mexican border under control. That equals the number of aliens apprehended in fiscal year 2011 from the four nations the U.S. government labels “state sponsors of terrorism” and ten additional “countries of interest.” Since January 2010, those flying into America via these 14 nations face enhanced screening; as the Transportation Security Administrationannounced, “Effective aviation security must begin beyond our borders.” U.S. national security merits at least that much vigilance on our borders.

The roaring immigration-reform debate this year largely addresses Hispanic aliens who illegally cross the border. Far more worrisome, however, are the thousands who break into America from countries “where we have concerns, particularly about al-Qaeda affiliates,” a top State Department official toldCNN.

These include Cubans, Iranians, Sudanese, and Syrians whose governments are federally designated “state sponsors of terrorism.” As indicated by the latest information in Table 34 of Customs and Border Protection’s Immigration Yearbook 2011, 198 Sudanese were nabbed while penetrating the USA. Between FY 2002 and 2011, there were 1,207 such arrests. (These figures cover all U.S. borders, although, as Table 35 confirms, 96.3 percent of detainees overall crossed from Mexico.) Like other immigrants, most Sudanese seek better lives here. But some may be vectors for the same militant Islam that literally tore Sudan in two.




In FY 2011, 108 Syrians were stopped at our borders; over ten years, the number is 1,353. Syria is a key supporter of Hezbollah, and Bashar Assad’s unstable regime reportedly has attacked its domestic opponents with chemical weapons.

As for Iranians, 276 were caught in FY 2011, while 2,310 were captured over the previous ten years. Iran also backs Hezbollah, hates “the Great Satan,” and craves atomic weapons.

The other ten “countries of interest” are Algeria, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Yemen, and:

• Afghanistan: The Taliban’s stronghold and current theater of America’s longest war. Afghans halted in FY 2011: 106. Prior ten fiscal years: 681.

• Nigeria: The land of underwear bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab suffers under sharia law in its northern provinces. Respective data: 591, 4,525.

• Pakistan: Hideaway of the Pakistani Taliban and the late Osama bin Laden. 525, 10,682.

• Saudi Arabia: Generous benefactor of radical imams and militant mosques worldwide; birthplace of 15 of the 19 September 11 hijackers. 123, 986.

• Somalia: Home of Indian Ocean pirates and al-Qaeda’s al-Shabaab franchise. In October 1993, Islamic terrorists there shot down two Black Hawk helicopters, killed 18 U.S. soldiers, and dragged several of their bodies through Mogadishu’s streets. 323, 1,524.

At a Capitol Hill hearing last July, Homeland Security secretary Janet Napolitano conceded that terrorists enter the U.S. via the U.S./Mexican border “from time to time.”

The House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Oversight last November published A Line in the Sand: Countering Crime, Violence, and Terror at the Southwest Border. As this study explained:

The Congressional Research Service reports that between September 2001 and September 2012, there have been 59 homegrown violent jihadist plots within the United States. Of growing concern and potentially a more violent threat to American citizens is the enhanced ability of Middle East terrorist organizations, aided by their relationships and growing presence in the Western Hemisphere, to exploit the Southwest border to enter the United States undetected.

A Line in the Sand offers chilling portraits of some who treat the southern border as America’s welcome mat.

• On January 11, 2011, U.S. agents discovered Said Jaziri in a car trunk trying to enter near San Diego. Said said that he had traveled from his native Tunisia to Tijuana and paid smugglers $5,000 to sneak him across the border. The French government previously convicted and deported Jaziri for assaulting a Muslim whom he considered insufficiently devout. In 2006, Jaziri advocated killing Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard for creating what Jaziri called sacrilegious drawings of the Prophet Mohammed.

• Somalia’s Ahmed Muhammed Dhakane told authorities in 2011 that he earned up to $75,000 per day smuggling East Africans into America. His clients included three al-Shabaab terrorists. As the House report states: “Dhakane cautioned that each of these individuals is ready to die for their cause and would fight against the United States if the jihad moved from overseas to the U.S. mainland.”

• On June 4, 2010, Anthony Joseph Tracy (a.k.a. Yusuf Noor) was convicted of conspiring to slip aliens into America. Tracy told federal investigators that Cuban diplomats used his travel agency in Kenya — Noor Services Ltd. — to transfer 272 Somalis to Havana. They proceeded to Belize, through Mexico, and then trespassed into the U.S. Tracy, who converted to Islam in prison in the 1990s, claims he refused to assist al-Shabaab. But officials discovered an e-mail in which he casually wrote: “i helped a lot of Somalis and most are good but there are some who are bad and i leave them to ALLAH . . . ”

And just remember: These anecdotes and statistics involve individuals whom authorities intercepted. At a Capitol Hill hearing last July, Homeland Security secretary Janet Napolitano conceded that terrorists enter the U.S. via the U.S./Mexican border “from time to time.”

One way we’re working to stop
homegrown jihadists


Over the past four years, nearly 190 homegrown Islamic terrorists—Jihadists—have been arrested in America.


The good news is that law enforcement officials in Tennessee now have much stronger tools to fight terrorism in their state.


In 2011, ACT! for America chapter leaders in Tennessee, working closely with Eagle Forum, led the grassroots effort that won passage of a stronger, tougher anti-terrorism law.

What makes the law particularly valuable is that it prohibits religious justification for violence. In effect, the law created a connection between the ideology of jihad and the act of jihad.

Get this—the law was fiercely opposed by Muslim organizations in the state who claimed it would prohibit the practice of Islam!



They were assisted by The Tennessean newspaper, which ran several biased articles that promoted false allegations about the law.

But when all was said and done, the truth prevailed and the bill passed.

This was a hard-fought and important victory, one that would not have been possible without ACT! for America’s strong grassroots leadership and presence in Tennessee. Every American is safer today as a result.

USA Today blockbuster article exposes mosques in the Boston area!

Dear Elaine,

Amid all the typical politically correct news stories and ruminations by pundits about the Boston Marathon terrorist attack, USA Today ran an article this morning (highlights added) that exposes the radicalism prevalent in two Boston-area mosques and their ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.

When you read the story—and we urge you to do so—pay particular attention to how mosque leaders react. (We realize it’s longer than what we typically send out, but this really is a must read!)

First, they claim that because the FBI and Homeland Security partner with them they can’t possibly be extreme. This is a classic Muslim Brotherhood tactic—co-opt law enforcement leadership to provide cover and credibility.

Second, they claim they are the targets of modern-day “McCarthyism” and use propaganda techniques to smear their critics—another Muslim Brotherhood tactic.

Kudos to our friends at Americans for Peace and Tolerance for all their research on these mosques, and kudos to USA Today for using that research to expose what well-informed observers have known about these mosques for quite some time.

BOSTON — The mosque attended by the two brothers accused in the Boston Marathon double bombing has been associated with other terrorism suspects, has invited radical speakers to a sister mosque in Boston and is affiliated with a Muslim group that critics say nurses grievances that can lead to extremism.

Several people who attended the Islamic Society of Boston mosque in Cambridge, Mass., have been investigated for Islamic terrorism, including a conviction of the mosque's first president, Abdulrahman Alamoudi, in connection with an assassination plot against a Saudi prince.

Its sister mosque in Boston, known as the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center, has invited guests who have defended terrorism suspects. A former trustee appears in a series of videos in which he advocates treating gays as criminals, says husbands should sometimes beat their wives and calls on Allah (God) to kill Zionists and Jews, according to Americans for Peace and Tolerance, an interfaith group that has investigated the mosques.

The head of the group is among critics who say the two mosques teach a brand of Islamic thought that encourages grievances against the West, distrust of law enforcement and opposition to Western forms of government, dress and social values.

"We don't know where these boys were radicalized, but this mosque has a curriculum that radicalizes people. Other people have been radicalized there," said the head of the group, Charles Jacobs.

Yusufi Vali, executive director at the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center, insists his mosque does not spread radical ideology and cannot be blamed for the acts of a few worshipers.

"If there were really any worry about us being extreme," Vali said, U.S. law enforcement agencies such as the FBI and Departments of Justice and Homeland Security would not partner with the Muslim American Society and the Boston mosque in conducting monthly meetings that have been ongoing for four years, he said, in an apparent reference to U.S. government outreach programs in the Muslim community.

The Cambridge and Boston mosques, separated by the Charles River, are owned by the same entity but managed individually. The imam of the Cambridge mosque, Sheik Basyouny Nehela, is on the board of directors of the Boston mosque.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, attended the Cambridge mosque for services and are accused of setting two bombs that killed three people and injured at least 264 others at the April 15 Boston Marathon.

The FBI has not indicated that either mosque was involved in any criminal activity, but mosque attendees and officials have been implicated in terrorist activity:

• Alamoudi, who signed the articles of incorporation as the Cambridge mosque's president, was sentenced to 23 years in federal court in Alexandria, Va., in 2004 for his role as a facilitator in what federal prosecutors called a Libyan assassination plot against then-crown prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. Abdullah is now the Saudi king.

• Aafia Siddiqui, who occasionally prayed at the Cambridge mosque, was arrested in Afghanistan in 2008 while in possession of cyanide canisters and plans for a chemical attack in New York City. She tried to grab a rifle while in detention and shot at military officers and FBI agents, for which she was convicted in New York in 2010 and is serving an 86-year sentence.

• Tarek Mehanna, who worshiped at the Cambridge mosque, was sentenced in 2012 to 17 years in prison for conspiring to aid al-Qaeda. Mehanna had traveled to Yemen to seek terrorist training and plotted to use automatic weapons to shoot up a mall in the Boston suburbs, federal investigators in Boston alleged.

• Ahmad Abousamra, the son of a former vice president of the Muslim American Society Boston Abdul-Badi Abousamra, was identified by the FBI as Mehanna's co-conspirator. He fled to Syria and is wanted by the FBI on charges of providing support to terrorists and conspiracy to kill Americans in a foreign country.

• Jamal Badawi of Canada, a former trustee of the Islamic Society of Boston Trust, which owns both mosques, was named as a non-indicted co-conspirator in the 2007 Holy Land Foundation terrorism trial in Texas over the funneling of money to Hamas, which is the Palestinian wing of the Muslim Brotherhood.

What both mosques have in common is an affiliation with the Muslim American Society, an organization founded in 1993 that describes itself as an American Islamic revival movement. It has also been described by federal prosecutors in court as the "overt arm" of the Muslim Brotherhood, which calls for Islamic law and is the parent organization of Hamas, a U.S.-designated terrorist group.

Critics say the Muslim American Society promotes a fraught relationship with the United States, expressed in part by the pattern discussed by Americans for Progress and Tolerance in which adherents are made to feel cut off from their home country and to identify with a global Islamist political community rather than with America.

Zhudi Jasser, president of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, said the radical teachings often follow a theme of recitation of grievances that Islam has with the West, advocacy against U.S. foreign policy and terrorism prosecutions, and efforts "to evangelize Islam in order to improve Western society that is secularized," he says.

Jasser, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and author of the 2012 book A Battle for the Soul of Islam: An American Muslim Patriot Fights to Save His Faith, says the teachings make some followers feel "like their national identity is completely absent and hollow, and that vacuum can be filled by (radical) Islamic ideology, which is supremacist and looks upon the West as evil."

The Cambridge mosque was founded in 1982 by students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard and several other Boston-area schools, according to a profile by the Pluralism Project at Harvard University. Its members founded the sister mosque in Boston in 2009.

The leadership of the two mosques is intertwined, and the ideology they teach is the same, Jacobs said. Ilya Feoktistov, director of research at Americans for Peace and Tolerance, said much of the money to create the Boston mosque came not from local Muslims but from foreign sources.

More than half of the $15.5 million used to found the Boston mosque came from Saudi sources, Feoktistov said, who cites financial documents that Jacobs' group obtained when the mosque sued it for defamation. The lawsuit was later dropped.

Vali said that the vast majority of total donors were in the United States and that "no donations were accepted if the donor wanted to have any decision-making influence (even if benign)."

Vali characterized Americans for Peace and Tolerance and its founder, Jacobs, as anti-Muslim activists who spread "lies and half-truths in order to attack and marginalize much of the local Muslim community and many of its institutions."

"It's the new McCarthyism in full swing," he said.

Sheik Basyouny Nehela, the imam of the Cambridge mosque, which is located across the Charles River from Boston, is on the board of directors for the Muslim American Society of Boston, which runs the Boston mosque. The Tsarnaevs attended the Cambridge mosque.

A statement issued by the Cambridge mosque said the Tsarnaev brothers were "occasional visitors." The mosque's office manager, Nichole Mossalam, said neither brother expressed radical views. "They never exhibited any violent sentiments or behaviors. Otherwise, they would have been reported," Mossalam said.

The Cambridge mosque said Tsarnaev, 26, who died Thursday night in a shootout with police, "disagreed with the moderate American-Islamic theology" of the mosque. Tsarnaev challenged an imam who said in his sermon that it was appropriate to celebrate U.S. national holidays and was told to stop such outbursts, the mosque said in a statement.

Talal Eid, a Muslim chaplain at Brandeis University, said focusing on individual radicals that prayed in a building is unfair.

"In 2011, the two brothers were right under the nose of the FBI and they didn't find anything," Eid said, who never met the Tsarnaevs. "How do you want me as an imam to know enough to tell them they are not welcome here? How can I figure out those people have that kind of criminal intent?"

The Muslim American Society says on its website that it is independent of the Muslim Brotherhood. However, early Brotherhood literature is considered "the foundational texts for the intellectual component for Islamic work in America," the website states.

Jacobs says claims of moderate Islam do not square with the mosque's classic jihadi texts in its library and its hosting of radical speakers.

Jacobs said Ahmed Mansour, his co-director at Americans for Peace and Tolerance, found writings by Syed Qutb, the former leader of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, and other jihadi texts at the Cambridge mosque's library when Mansour went there in 2003. Qutb pioneered the radical violent ideology espoused by al-Qaeda.

Yusuf al Qaradawi, the Muslim Brotherhood spiritual leader who espouses radical views in videos collected by Jacobs' group, was listed as a trustee on the Cambridge mosque's IRS filings until 2000, and on the mosque's website until 2003, when he addressed congregants via recorded video message to raise money for the Boston mosque, according to a screenshot of the announcement that Feoktistov provided.

Vali said Qaradawi was listed as an honorary trustee years ago only because his scholarship and high esteem in Muslim circles would help with fundraising.

Yasir Qadhi, who lectured at the Boston mosque in April 2009, has advocated replacing U.S. democracy with Islamic rule and called Christians "filthy" polytheists whose "life and prosperity … holds no value in the state of Jihad," according to a video obtained by Jacobs' group.

Vali said Qadhi was a guest of a non-profit organization that was renting space at the Boston mosque and has changed his views since that video was made.

Jacobs and others say it is not only renters who express sympathetic views for terrorists. Leaders of the Boston and Cambridge mosques, and invited guests, have advocated on behalf of convicted terrorists, urging followers to seek their release or lenient sentences.

Imam Abdullah Faaruuq, sometimes a spokesman for the Boston mosque, used Siddiqui's case to speak against the USA Patriot Act, the anti-terrorism law passed under the George W. Bush administration. "After they're done with (Siddiqui), they are going to come to your door if they feel like it," he said, according to a video obtained by Americans for Peace and Tolerance.

Anwar Kazmi, a member of the Cambridge mosque's board of trustees, called for leniency for Mehanna and Siddiqui at a Boston rally in February 2012, in a video posted to YouTube. He characterized Siddiqui's 86-year sentence as excessive.

In an interview with USA TODAY, Kazmi insisted that the Cambridge mosque is moderate and condemns the marathon bombings. On Monday, the mosque e-mailed members to caution them that the FBI may question them and that they may want to seek representation.

"This kind of violence, terrorism, it's just completely contrary to the spirit of Islam," Kasmi said. "The words in the Quran say if anybody kills even a single human being without just cause, it's as if you've killed all of humanity."

“Jihad will not be wished away”

In November 2009, in the wake of the Ft. Hood jihadist attack, ACT! for America Executive Director Guy Rodgers wrote a column in which he coined the term “Jihad Denial Syndrome.”

Here we are, over three years later, in the wake of the Boston Marathon jihadist attack, and, as Andrew McCarthy notes below in National Review Online, “…willful blindness remains the order of the day.”

“He seemed so nice.” Statements like this have been all over the media. Many people just can’t or don’t want to grasp why the Tsarnaev brothers did what they did. It’s troubling that Jihad Denial Syndrome is so common among those in government, the media, and academia.

‘Outlook: Islam.” So reads the personal webpage of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who ravaged Boston this week, along with his now-deceased brother and fellow jihadist, Tamerlan — namesake of a 14th-century Muslim warrior whose campaigns through Asia Minor are legendary for their brutalization of non-Muslims.

Brutalizing our own non-Muslim country has been the principal objective of jihadists for the last 20 years. This week marks a new and chilling chapter: the introduction on our shores of the tactics the self-styled mujahideen have used to great, gory effect for the past decade in Afghanistan and Iraq.

At a point in the race timed to achieve maximum carnage, the Tsarnaev brothers bombed the Boston Marathon with improvised explosive devices. IEDs are small but potent homemade bombs — crude explosives and unforgiving shrapnel encased in easily portable pressure cookers. The bombs are simple to make. They won’t kill thousands or even hundreds of people like hijacked planes or heavy chemical explosives will. But that’s not the objective. The goal is to instill terror into the flow of everyday life. IEDs are made for “soft” targets. They are easily camouflaged amid the traffic, the everyday debris, and the eight-year-old boys frolicking as they wait for Dad to cross the finish line.

Willful blindness remains the order of the day, as it has since the World Trade Center was bombed in 1993. It is freely conceded that, when the identities and thus the motivation of the Marathon terrorists were not known, it would have been irresponsible to dismiss any radical ideology as, potentially, the instigator. But in our politically correct, up-is-down culture, to suggest “Outlook: Islam” was unthinkable. So the most likely scenario — namely, that jihadists who have been at war with us for two decades had, yet again, attacked innocent civilians — became the least likely scenario in the minds of media pundits. Instead, they brazenly prayed (to Gaia, I’m sure) for white conservative culprits with Tea Party hats and Rush 24/7 subscriptions. As our Kevin D. Williamson quipped, the “literal Caucasians” they got were not quite what they had in mind.

To listen to the commentary was to assume that the jihad’s nimble post-9/11 shift from heavy bombs and airliner missiles to IEDs had never happened. Prior to 2009, much agitprop was made over the thousands of American troops killed and maimed by IEDs in Iraq — they signified, the Left told us, that George Bush had brought al-Qaeda to previously jihad-free Baghdad. So did IEDs at the Marathon mean the same jihad had now come to Boston? Perish the thought. Surely the Marathon bombing was the work of either the right-wing extremists Janet Napolitano has been warning us about since 2009, or those notoriously violent Catholics and Evangelicals that today’s Armyequates with Hamas and Hezbollah.

But no: It was in fact the jihad that stubbornly refuses to be wished away. It will have to be defeated. It was never a molehill we were exaggerating into Mohammed’s mountain. After 1,400 years of aggression, we can safely say it is not anytime soon going to evolve into the ballyhooed “internal struggle for personal betterment” — not for the tens of millions of Muslims for whom Islamic supremacism is, quite simply, Islam.

So will we be roused to meet the challenge? Doesn’t seem like it. On Friday morning, the damning and utterly predictable details began pouring in the second the jihadists were identified — “Outlook: Islam”; a YouTube playlistcalled “Terrorists” that included the ditty, “I will dedicate my life to jihad”; a wife who abruptly converted to Islam and began dressing in what a neighbor called “the Islamic style”; an apparent reverence for the notorious sharia jurist Sheikh Feiz Mohammed. Yet the media commentary, even if it grudgingly mentions these things, internalizes none of them. “How shocking it is,” we’ve repeatedly heard, “that the brothers Tsarnaev want to mass-murder Americans. After all, they’re Chechen Muslims, and the Chechens’ beef is with the Russians, not us.”

Good grief. It is the Uighurs all over again. You’ll recall the Uighurs — they were a group of Turkic-speaking jihadists from the Xinjiang region of China, detained at Guantanamo Bay because they trained in Afghanistan with an al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist organization (the East Turkistan Islamic Movement). At least some of them fought against American forces. Nevertheless, we released them. Stroking its bloated chin, our government rationalized that they could not be enemy combatants because they weren’t our enemies — their beef was really with China, right? After all, Islam is a Religion of Peace and we’re very nice people, so why should we assume they might have a problem with us?

We are in a war driven by ideology. “Violent extremism,” which is the label the government and the commentariat prefer to put on our enemies, is not an ideology — it is the brutality that radical ideologies yield. Our enemies’ ideology is Islamic supremacism. To challenge and defeat an ideological movement, you have to understand and confront their vision of the world. Imposing your own assumptions and biases will not do. Islamic supremacists do not see a world of Westphalian nation-states. They do not distinguish between Russia and America the way they distinguish between Muslims and non-Muslims. Their ideology frames matters as Dar al-Islam versus Dar al-Harb: the realm of Islam in a fight to the death against the realm of war — which is everyone and everyplace else.

The fact that you think this is nuts, or that I’m nuts for saying it out loud, has nothing to do with whether they believe it. They do — and they don’t care, even a little, what you think.

You do not defeat an ideology by hoping it will change or disappear. You have to challenge it, to make it defend its baleful tenets in the light of day. You cannot protect yourself from its violent outbursts absent understanding its teaching, reluctantly accepting that its teaching will inevitably lead some Muslims to strike out savagely, and committing to a pro-active, intelligence-based counterterrorism strategy — one that scraps political correctness and ferrets out the jihadists before they strike.

Asked about his “outlook,” Dzhokhar Tsarnaev offered a pregnant response, “Islam,” that raises more questions than it answers. There are all kinds of Islam, including the supremacist kind that is far more widely held than we’re comfortable acknowledging. Until we get beyond that discomfort, until we are prepared to ask, “What Islam?” — and until we are prepared to treat Islamic supremacism as the pariah it should be — Boston’s hellish week will remain our recurring nightmare.

A new front in the struggle against Islamist terrorism

As of this writing (9:56 A.M. EDT), one of the Boston Marathon terrorists suspects is dead, the other is on the run.
According to one report, “The deceased suspect in the bombing of the Boston marathon, which killed three and injured more than 170, appears to have posted a video to his YouTube playlist extolling an extremist religious prophecy associated with Al Qaeda.”

By the time you get this email, events may have changed dramatically.

But the revelation that these suspects are “brothers from a Russian region near Chechnya, which has been plagued by an Islamic insurgency” (AP report) indicates that a new front in the struggle against radical Islamist terror has now been opened against America.

Russia has been battling this ideology and its terrorism for years. The most horrific terrorist attack in that conflict occurred in September, 2004, when Islamist terrorists took over a school and killed hundreds of children and adults.

Now, it appears, this kind of brutality has made its way to America.

Some jihadists hope it’s jihad

Dear Elaine,

As America mourns the deaths and catastrophic injuries from yesterday’s terrorist attack in Boston, including the death of an eight year old boy, there are jihadists around the world who are hoping this was an act of jihad (see article below from the SITE monitoring service).

As of this writing, the closest thing to a suspect is a Saudi national who is here in America on a student visa. So at this time, while we wouldn’t be surprised if this turned out to be an act of jihad, we just don’t know for sure yet.

Yesterday, President Obama urged Americans not to jump to conclusions regarding who perpetrated this attack. Fair enough.

But if it turns out this was an act of jihadist terrorism, isn’t it time President Obama and his administration stopped denying that jihad and radical Islam has anything to do with attacks like this?

After all, the jihadists don’t hesitate to call it jihad.

Jihadists Hope Boston Bombings are Acts of Jihadi Terrorism

Amidst ongoing media reports of two explosions in the American city of Boston, Massachusetts, near the finish line of the marathon race on April 15, 2013, jihadists expressed their joy and hoped the blasts are acts of jihadi terrorism.

One forum member noted that over a week ago, a jihadist announced his desire to plan bombings in the United States, but was chastised by others for revealing such a plot publicly. He is referring to a posting on the Ansar al-Mujahideen forum on April 1 in which a jihadist tried to recruit members for an attack similar in impact to al-Qaeda's 9/11 strikes, but seemed focused on the attack being a suicide bombing. In other posts responding to the explosions, on the Ansar al-Mujahideen, al-Fida' and Shumukh al-Islam forums, jihadists gave pictures circulated in the media of the aftermath, showing injured people and a bloody sidewalk, and some hoped more bombings will follow.

Administrators of Shumukh al-Islam, a top-tier jihadist forum and primary source for official messages from al-Qaeda, placed a two scrolling messages atop the forum, the first stating: "Urgent // Casualties and Injuries in an Explosion that Shook the US State of Boston, and a State of Panic and Chaos Spreads Across America in General," and the second giving an oft-repeated statement from former al-Qaeda leader Usama bin Laden: "I swear by Allah the Great, who raised the sky without pillars, that America and those who live in America will not dream of security until we live it as a reality in Palestine and until all the disbelieving armies are expelled from the land of Muhammad, Allah's peace and prayer be upon him."

Free speech and a vet’s tattoo: What we can learn about threats to free speech from the incident at the skydiving center

Dear Elaine,

Wow! So many of you called and emailed the skydiving center at Lake Wales Monday and Tuesday that their voice mail box completely filled up and their phone was constantly busy.

But some of you did get through, and you emailed us regarding what you were told by the center.

Yesterday morning, I decided to call the center myself, because some of what you were told differed with the blog account we posted yesterday. This email is a little longer than normal but I’m persuaded you’ll want to know what I learned.

I talked to two people for more than an hour, one of whom was the manager who handled the incident in question. I asked a lot of questions in order to better understand their perspective on what happened.

Here’s what I was able to confirm.

1) A Qatari military officer complained to someone on the skydiving center staff about the vet who had the tattoo that said “infidel.”

2) The person who received the complaint brought the vet back into the office of the manager, where the three of them met privately.

3) The vet was asked to cover up his tattoo, with duct tape if necessary.

4) The vet refused.

At this point the stories differ. The vet claimed on his blog he was told to leave. The manager claims she never told the vet to leave, that he voluntarily decided to leave and said he would take his business elsewhere.

With no other witnesses it’s impossible to know which version is correct. Perhaps the manager implied to the vet that it would be better if he left. Perhaps the vet misunderstood what the manager was saying.

Someone posted on our Facebook page that he has asked repeatedly if the vet was allowed to “manifest a load,” but has not gotten an answer from the business. His point was that the vet may not have been asked to leave but if he wasn’t allowed to do a jump that amounts to the same thing.

But actually, whether the vet was told to leave or left voluntarily isn’t the issue.

The issue is this: The vet was asked to silence his freedom of speech because a Muslim soldier from another country was “offended.”

I asked the manager if she ever considered going to the Qatari officer and calmly saying something like, “I’m sorry you’re offended, but here in America people say and do things all the time that offend others. And that’s protected speech under our first amendment.”

She said she never talked to the Qatari officer, that “it never got that far.” The reason it didn’t is because the manager’s first—and only—response was to deal with the vet, not talk to the Muslim.

Unfortunately, this is a typical Western response to these kinds of situations. It’s a common way to try to keep peace, and this is a single, small example of a very big problem. Rather than explaining to Muslim immigrants how free speech works, Europeans have practiced this kind of capitulation for decades—and today European countries have hate-speech laws that criminalize words that Muslims deem “offensive.”

I’m assuming the manager meant well, that she was just trying to keep the peace between two customers. I’ve owned businesses so I get that. But the first problem is her solution for keeping the peace was to silence the vet rather than educate the Muslim.

Another thing she said to me, coupled with something the man I talked to said, reveals a second problem that demonstrates why we must aggressively fight to protect our free speech rights.

The manager compared the vet’s tattoo to a member of the KKK taunting a group of African-Americans. She asked, “If that happened here at my business, shouldn’t I step in and stop the KKK person?”

This is the kind of faulty analogy that is at the heart of accusations of “racism” leveled by groups like CAIR. To compare the actions of a KKK member to a vet wearing a tattoo that says “infidel” is not only absurd. It is reinforcing the propaganda and name-calling tactics employed by the Muslim Brotherhood and its legacy organizations to silence anything deemed “offensive” to Islam.

The man I talked to explained to me that one time a Qatari soldier wore a T-shirt that was offensive and that he was asked to remove it, and did so. The man used this as a justification for why the manager asked the vet to cover his tattoo.

I asked him what the shirt said. While I don’t recall the specific wording, it was something to the effect of “What happened to New York shouldn’t have stopped there.”

The meaning was crystal clear: The shirt was glorifying 9/11 and was an implicit support for more terrorist attacks. This was why the Qatari was asked to remove the shirt.

Again, comparing that shirt to an “infidel” tattoo is absurd.

My purpose in writing this today is not to heap more criticism on this business or its manager, or to ask you to continue contacting them. Believe me, the ACT! for America grassroots responded and the skydiving business got the message that people were upset!

My purpose is to point out, using this example, that freedom of speech is in peril here in America, in many ways, both great and small.

The man I talked to claimed the vet was deliberately trying to provoke the Qatari soldiers. I don’t know if that’s true or not. But whether he was or not is pretty much irrelevant. I know for a fact that some people sport tattoos to be deliberately provocative, and even offensive.

Most of us ignore them. Even is someone complains, it’s rare that a business owner will side with the complaint and ask the person with the tattoo to cover it up. Would a business ask someone to cover a tattoo that said “atheist” if a Christian objected? Even if it did, we know what the ACLU would do if the business tried.

I’m sure there are those who would say the Qatari soldiers are guests in our country and we should accommodate them. When it comes to hospitality, I agree.

But when it comes to our fundamental freedoms, I don’t.

I grew up understanding that being a guest meant I had a responsibility to shape my behaviors to fit those of my hosts—not the other way around. In this case, the Qatari soldiers had a responsibility to accommodate our rules and customs—just as they would expect us to accommodate theirs if we were guests in their country.

No doubt there will also be those who read this who will argue we’re making too big a deal of this incident.

There were those who said the same thing in colonial America, that the taxes imposed by Britain on the American colonies were too small to be concerned about.

And it’s true, the initial tax levies were actually pretty small.

But the protestors, men like Sam Adams, said the issue was not the size of the tax but the precedent established by the creation of the tax.

Every time an American surrenders the right of free speech in order to avoid doing something deemed “offensive” by a Muslim, a precedent is established in the mind of both the Muslim and the non-Muslim. This is true when the President does it and it’s true when a business does it.

What we need to do is simply, politely and clearly say “no.” No, we will not give up our rights to express our opinions. We don’t need to be belligerent, obnoxious or combative about it, and we should do so in a way that educates Muslims who don’t understand what free speech means in America.

But silencing ourselves in order to keep peace is to follow the path Europe has already trod. Just ask Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Woolf, our chapter leader in Austria who was convicted of violating “hate speech” laws, how that has worked out.

CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) is an unindicted co-conspirator in the largest terrorism financing trial in U.S. history.

Over the past several years, a number of CAIR officials and leaders have been indicted, convicted or deported, on various charges.

CAIR’s co-founder has publicly stated that “the Qur’an should be the highest authority in America.”

Our Justice Department has connected CAIR to the terrorist organization Hamas.

Does this sound like an organization we should be welcoming to speak in our public schools?

Of course not—which is why ACT! for America is fighting attempts by CAIR to get into our children’s classrooms.
In Washington state, the CAIR affiliate has been sending letters to school districts offering CAIR representatives as speakers. Our Washington state chapters have been fighting this.

Last fall in Tampa, Florida, ACT! for America chapters helped organize a local citizens watchdog group that appeared before the county school board to oppose CAIR representatives being invited to speak in schools.

ACT! for America Executive Director Guy Rodgers spoke at a news conference in Tampa, during which he asked, “Would the school board allow a speaker into the schools from an organization tied to a white supremacist terrorist organization? Of course not! Nor should it. Then the school board should be consistent and not allow speakers from CAIR in its schools.”

In 2010, ACT! for America learned that Everett Community College had invited a CAIR representative to speak on campus.

Using our large Facebook presence, we mobilized to demand that Everett Community College invite a speaker with an opposing viewpoint.

The president of the college personally posted a message on the college Facebook page, noting that the grassroots response about CAIR was the largest they’d ever seen.

The college did invite another speaker, and even removed the CAIR logo from its website.

I am a disabled combat veteran. I served in Iraq and worked in Afghanistan. I took an IED because my country asked me too, and I was injured by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan. I have a Purple Heart and an ARCOM with Valor. I fully expect to be treated differently when I am visiting another country - when I am in America I expect equality and toleration; but what I experienced today is something that I never would have thought I'd have to go through in my own country. The country I fought for!

I am a skydiver with around 300 jumps under my belt. I've done jumps from 30,000 feet, helicopters, hot air balloons, wingsuit skydives and so forth. So with that being said I travel around doing this sport quite a bit. Today was my second time at a dropzone called "Florida Skydiving Center / Skydive Lake Wales".

Coincidentally there are soldiers from the country of Qatar being trained there.

The picture is of the tattoo I have. Here is the definition of said tattoo: "Kafir is an Arabic term used in an Islamic doctrinal sense, usually translated as "unbeliever," "disbeliever," or "infidel." The term refers to a person who rejects God or who hides, denies, or covers the "truth." The Muslim's from Qatar saw that tattoo and complained to the dropzone. Once they did so I was called to the back office and asked to cover it up by the OWNER. Not that I would, but its 80 something degrees here today, and that would be an unreasonable request. After I told her that I had no pants to cover it up she told me that she has DUCT TAPE that I can use to cover it. I told the lady that I was not going to cover it up, as it was nothing more than a tattoo saying "I am not a Muslim". After beating around the bush for a few minutes entertaining me while I was trying to convince her otherwise, she asked me to leave.


What kind of America do we live in where someone comes back from war; disabled and decorated... while serving overseas was called an "infidel" for over 2 years, and then get asked to leave an establishment because of a tattoo I have that says just that, because of a culture of people visiting our country, and an American Business with no ethical sense or a backbone for that matter.

I am honestly offended and embarassed by how I was treated at skydive lake wales.

A Chapter Leader’s story

Gil St. John leads a very active, successful ACT! for America chapter in Northern Virginia. Four years ago he attended his first ACT! for America National Conference & Legislative Briefing—and it changed his life.

Gil agreed to share his story with the entire ACT! for America membership.





Four years ago I attended my first ACT! for America conference in Washington, DC. I remember mentioning the conference to my wife a few months earlier, and her response was, “You’ve always been interested in ACT and Brigitte, so why don’t you attend?”

As the father of two daughters, reading the story of a young Lebanese Christian girl living 7 years in a bomb shelter resonated with me deeply. I could not get it out of my mind. I had to learn more about this woman and her organization. I needed to know more about ACT! for America and what Brigitte Gabriel had started.

Being new to “activist” organizations, I asked a dear friend if she would like to attend the conference with me. She agreed and we were off to our first ACT! conference. We walked in, listened, and met people from all around the country. After the first day, I was thinking, these people are just like me! They share my same concern about radical Islam and the direction of our country. They get it!

What I saw, what I learned, the people I met—the national conference was simply amazing! I knew I just had to get involved! On the way home in the car, I said to my friend: “I have to do this—But I can’t do it alone. Will you help me start a chapter?” She said yes, and we were now a chapter of TWO people.

Today we have hundreds of people on our chapter list, and just recently, our chapter, along with other ACT! for America members, was instrumental in an important school board decision here in Northern Virginia. A group affiliated with the Islamist Gulen movement wanted to start a charter school here, but our phone calls, emails, and large presence at school board meetings helped persuade the school board to deny the request! Words can’t express how rewarding it was to see all of our hard work pay off.

Becoming part of ACT! for America has made me feel complete. It’s given me the opportunity to give back to the country that has given me so much. I’m still learning new skills, how to grow the local chapter membership, use social media effectively, and work with volunteers just like me.

But it all started when I attended my first ACT! for America national conference. That was the spark that lit a fire that has burned in me ever since.

There is hope for America. There are people just like you, who “get it.” That’s why I urge you to come to this year’s national conference. The speakers are amazing and the information you’ll get is remarkable.

But maybe even more important, you’ll be inspired to believe that we can really make a difference, if we work together.

“Civilization Jihad”

In the Muslim Brotherhood explanatory memorandum for its strategic objectives in North America we read:


The Ikhwan [brothers] must understand that their work in America is a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and “sabotaging” its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God’s religion is made victorious over all other religions.

This memorandum was approved by the Muslim Brotherhood Shura Council, and the U.S. Justice Department affirmed its authenticity when it entered the memorandum as evidence in the Holy Land Foundation terrorism financing trial.

Think about what this memorandum is saying.

It’s calling for a “grand Jihad”;
Its goal is to destroy Western civilization;
They will use people in the West as enablers of their own destruction (“sabotaging its miserable house by their hands…”)




In other words, the Muslim Brotherhood believes that by using “information warfare” it can recruit Westerners to assist it in toppling Western civilization.

And the Muslim Brotherhood has been very successful at doing this.

Who are these enablers?

They include those who refuse to acknowledge jihadist ideology as the driving force behind Islamic terrorism. Those who believe deceptive platitudes offered by groups like CAIR, ISNA, MPAC and ICNA. Those who actively work to silence critics of radical Islam by calling them “Islamophobes.”

When General Martin Dempsey publicly dressed down Lt. Colonel Matthew Dooley, who was teaching about the threat of Islamic terrorism at the National Defense University, Dempsey became a poster child for the Muslim Brotherhood’s goal of tearing us down “by our own hands.”

Muslim leader's stunning claim at Texas rally for Islam

Muslims living in America should not be bound by U.S. law, according to a leader of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, who delivered the controversial message to a crowd at a Muslim rally in Austin, Texas.

“If we are practicing Muslims, we are above the law of the land,” said Mustafa Carroll, executive director of the Dallas-Fort Worth CAIR branch.

The rally in Austin was part of a nationwide effort to hold “Muslim Capitol Day” events.

According to the event website, Muslims from around Texas went to the capitol to “promote civic and political activism throughout the wider Muslim community.”

The organizers said one major issue discussed “was the recent House and Senate bill proposals involving the implementation of ‘anti-Shariah’ legislation, where the First Amendment rights and freedoms of Muslims would ultimately be hindered.”

Critics argue Shariah prohibits other faiths from free exercise of religion when enforced, giving freedom only to Muslims.

Carroll’s statement was similar to a statement allegedly made by CAIR co-founder and former chairman Omar M. Ahmad. He was paraphrased by a reporter saying, “Islam isn’t in America to be equal to any other faith, but to become dominant” and the Quran “should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on Earth.”

Carroll began joking about the widespread concern about Shariah, the religious code that governs Muslim civil and political life.

“We tried to downplay Shariah, because we didn’t want to give the other side any excitement for being here,” he said.

He dismissed critics who express concern about Shariah, calling them “anti-foreign.”

“When you even say the word Shariah, people get nervous. We are not advocating for Shariah. We are not trying to make Shariah the law of the land,” he said.

Carroll claimed Muslims only want the “right to practice our faith.”

But he also said, “If you understand Shariah, the foundation of our faith … how we treat our neighbor, how we treat our parents … how we participate in society, all of that is part of Shariah.”

Carroll is on record defending Hamas, classified by the U.S. as a terrorist group.

“I think you can only blame Hamas for so long. It takes two to tango. And I think, you know, that what we’ve heard for a number of years is this terrorist, terrorist, terrorist, terrorist, Hamas, Hamas, Hamas, was not just Hamas,” he’s said.

At CAIR’s Dallas banquet in 2007, Carroll denied the Quran is the source of terrorism.

“Look at the true cause of the terrorism. It’s not somebody is reading a book, reading a Quran, and then go out and say, ‘Well, the Quran told me to blow this up. I’m gonna blow it up.’ The cause, the root cause of terrorism is oppression. The root cause of terrorism is oppression.”

September 25, 2013, is the 224th anniversary of the passage of the Bill of Rights by Congress.

On that day, ACT! for America is going to remind America and the world that free speech is something we cherish and will defend.

We’ve declared September 25, 2013, to be “Freedom of Speech Day.” It’s part of our “Americans United to Defend Free Speech” campaign.

When a poll finds that six in ten Muslims in America believe criticism of Islam should be banned…

…when American Muslim leaders pressure our Department of Justice to find a way to criminalize speech critical of Islam…

…when our State Department is assisting the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in its goal to criminalize free speech…

…We need to stand up NOW and wake up America!!!

Please also sign our open letter to Congress and the 50 state legislatures, urging them to introduce and pass resolutions opposing implementation of UN Resolution 16/18.



The OIC’s goal is to use UN Resolution 16/18 to pressure countries to criminalize speech deemed “offensive” to Islam. (See this article in the Saudi Gazette.)

Ten days ago legislation we supported in South Dakota, the Free Speech Defense Act, was signed into law.

As you can see, we’re making progress!!

Now is the time to ACT! Let’s send a loud and clear message to our friends and neighbors, to elected officials, and to Muslim organizations intent on destroying our freedom of speech, that we will not stand by and let this happen!

CAIR bullying teacher

Teacher overwhelmed when she learns ACT! for America is rallying to her defense!
Dear Elaine,

Mary Janda, a veteran of 21 years of teaching at Concrete Middle School in Concrete, Washington, is under attack by the Washington affiliate of Hamas-connected CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations).

Her “offense?” During a class discussion on bullying, she referred to Hamas and the Taliban as examples of organizations that use violence to “bully people.”

A student in class objected, saying “My father is a Muslim and these statements aren’t true.”

Of course they are.

Hamas is a terrorist organization and the Taliban is who we’re fighting in Afghanistan!

The school district investigated the incident and correctly concluded Ms. Janda did nothing wrong.

But CAIR-Washington jumped into the fray, alleging “racism,” contacting the media, and even demanding a Justice Department civil rights investigation.

The Muslim father didn’t talk to the teacher to get her side of the story. Had he done so he would have known that Ms. Janda made it clear she wasn’t referring to Muslims or Arabs in general.

CAIR-Washington didn’t talk to the teacher, either.

No, CAIR-Washington saw this as an opportunity to further its faulty, cynical narrative that Muslims across America are regular victims of discrimination and civil rights abuses.

CAIR-Washington is now alleging there is a “pattern” of discrimination in the school district, demanding extensive information on curriculum, textbooks, and internal correspondence.

Meanwhile, a veteran teacher with an exemplary record, who stated something that is factual and provable, is under attack—her good name smeared so that CAIR-Washington can advance its political agenda.

When local citizens in Concrete reached out to ACT! for America for our help, we responded. We connected Ms. Janda to pro bono legal counsel. And our chapters and members in Washington have organized a local rally in support of Ms. Janda.

The rally will take place on Tuesday, March 19th, at 7:30 PM, at a local church in Concrete. An email about this rally is going out to all our members in Washington.
