Donald Trump will make a three day official state visit to the UK in June, Buckingham Palace announced today.

The US President and First Lady Melania Trump have accepted an invitation from the Queen for visit from June 3 to June 5.

Trump was promised the visit by Theresa May after he was elected in 2016 but it was postponed amid protests in the UK against his policies.

May said today: 'The UK and United States have a deep and enduring partnership that is rooted in our common history and shared interests.

'We do more together than any two nations in the world and we are both safer and more prosperous because of our cooperation.

'The State Visit is an opportunity to strengthen our already close relationship in areas such as trade, investment, security and defence, and to discuss how we can build on these ties in the years ahead.'

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: 'The President of the United States of America, President Donald J Trump, accompanied by Mrs Melania Trump, has accepted an invitation from Her Majesty The Queen to pay a State Visit to the United Kingdom from Monday 3rd June to Wednesday 5th June 2019.'

The Queen and Trump also inspected the Guard of Honour formed of the Coldstream Guards during his previous visit +13

Mr Trump will also hold a bilateral meeting with Mrs May during the visit, and attend a ceremony in Portsmouth to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day.

A White House spokesman said: 'This state visit will reaffirm the steadfast and special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom.

'In addition to meeting the Queen, the President will participate in a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Theresa May.

'While in the United Kingdom, the President and First Lady will attend a ceremony in Portsmouth to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, at one of the primary embarkation sites for the Allied operation that led to the liberation of Europe during World War II.'

Mr Trump and his wife will then travel to Normandy on June 6.

It is not known which royals will be attending the events marking the three day state visit.

Prince Harry's wife Meghan - a vocal opponent of Trump in the past - will be on maternity leave when he is in the UK, so may not be in attendance.

Trump and the First Lady Melania visited the UK in July 2018, but only for a two-day working visit, and he was not officially invited by the Queen.

The announcement has today sparked calls for renewed demonstrations after thousands of people took to the streets last year when he arrived in Britain.

Campaigners are also calling for the return of the baby 'Trump Blimp' a year after the giant 20ft tall effigy depicting the President as a baby was flown above Parliament Square.

Activists floated the six-metre helium-filled effigy (pictured) of the US president in Parliament Square during Trump's visit to the UK in 2018 +13

During his previous visit in 2018 more than 100,000 people - including Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn - took to the streets to protest against his politics, but the visit largely passed off without any major incidents +13

And Labour MPs said he would not be welcomed in the UK and demanded a return of the scenes that greeted his arrival in 2018.

The state visit, follows a rare meeting between the Queen and US ambassador Woody Johnson, which is thought to have taken place last month.

During the 2018 visit the US President and First Lady Melania was treated to dinner at Blenheim Palace with Prime Minister Theresa May, and a meeting with the 92-year-old monarch at Windsor castle, before jetting off to Scotland to play golf at his Turnberry resort.

Trump later described the Queen as a 'tremendous woman' who had 'really never made a mistake'.

Social media was today swamped with demands for a return of the Trump blimp.

One said: 'Time to break out the baby blimp and let the protest fly.

'Just when we thought that Britain couldn't get much lower than Brexit.. the civilised world will shudder.

'Trump is not welcome here.'

A proposed state visit would follow Trump's previous two-day working visit with first lady Melania last year where they met the Queen at Windsor castle (pictured) +13

Another tweeted: 'Where's baby Trump blimp? Think he needs to make a return.'

And a user added: 'Let's get the baby blimp to follow him whereever he goes, as soon as he lands #YouAreNotWelcomeHere.'

In a furious tweet Labour MP David Lammy branded the president 'deluded, dishonest, xenophobic, narcissistic' and said Theresa May was 'selling out the UK to a serial liar and a cheat.'

He added: 'Donald Trump is no friend of Britain.

Today scores of posts on Twitter were calling for a return of the Trump blimp when the US president makes his expected return in June

'He is not fit to hold public office, let alone worthy of our country's highest honours and a banquet with the Queen.

Labour MP Stella Creasy called for a campaign to 'make sure those targeted by Trump's hate know whose side this country is on.'

Extinction Rebellion climate change campaigners, who have caused mayhem on the streets of London over the last week, also vowed to hold protests when he arrives in early June.

One said today on Twitter: 'Donald Trump set to announce a state visit to the UK.

'When he comes, we will not sit still. #ClimateAction @ExtinctionR'

A full state visit for the US president and the First Lady could look very different to the 2018 trip.

It is understood it would begin with a welcome from the Queen at Horse Guards Parade in London and an inspection of the Guard of Honour.

A carriage procession to Buckingham Palace escorted by mounted soldiers from the Household Cavalry would then take place.

Gun salutes would also be fired from Green Park and the Tower of London.

After arriving at the Palace, guests are invited to a State Banquet held in the Ballroom.

Around guests who have important cultural, diplomatic or economic links to the country being hosted are invited to attend.

Over the next few days, the visitor would then meet the prime minister, Government ministers and leaders of the main political parties.

They may also attend a banquet hosted by the Lord Mayor and City of London Corporation where they will meet industry leaders.

President Barack Obama, King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia and Chinese President Xi Jinping are among those to have also received state visits.
Trump and First Lady Melania were first invited by the monarch for a full state visit within weeks of entering the White House, at the suggestion of Downing Street.

The offer was accepted, but Mr Trump pulled out amid fears over widespread protests.

A second plan for the President to open the new US Embassy in London last February was also abandoned.

His previous visit was, however, marked by large scale protests in London.

More than 100,000 people - including Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn - took to the streets to protest against his politics, but the visit largely passed off without any major incidents.

The policing operation over the two days is estimated to have cost around £18million.

Buckingham Palace did not officially reveal details of the dinner between the Queen and US ambassador Johnson last month, saying they would not comment on a 'private' engagement.

The pair are thought to have dined at Winfield House, the imposing Regent's Park residence of America's leading official in the UK.

The Queen seldom undertakes 'secret' dinners of this nature any more and if she were to do so, it would normally be held at one of her own royal residences, namely Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle.

The fact that she was willing to go to see the ambassador at his own home is a sign of how significant the event was.

The visit follows a rare meeting between the Queen and US ambassador Woody Johnson  (pictured) which is thought to have taken place last month +13

Johnson is a personal friend of Trump and was nominated by him to be the official 'Ambassador to the Court of St. James's' in 2017.

It remains unclear if Trump will address parliament during the trip.

John Bercow, the Speaker of the House of Commons, has so far refused to offer an invitation.

He has previously said it was an 'earned honour' and not a right.

Today Bercow said a request for a state visit from President Donald Trump would be 'considered in the usual way', but did not say whether a request had yet been received.

A spokeswoman for the Speaker's Office said: 'Should a request be made to address the Houses of Parliament, it will be considered in the usual way.'

It has been reported that Bercow has declined the privilege because of his private objections to the President's style of leadership.

Defence Minister Tobias Ellwood led the criticism of Mr Bercow's decision, arguing that the 'special relationship' was 'greater than any one individual'.

He said: 'We should leverage the US President's state visit, including the opportunity formally to address Parliament.'

Sebastian Gorka, Mr Trump's former deputy assistant, added: 'The Speaker is slapping the face of British tradition. This is a totalitarian approach. This is an outrage'.

US secret service agents are expected to land in the UK this week to finalise the logistics required for the visit, which is expected to be formally confirmed with days.

The Mail on Sunday reported that, as part of the preparations, No 10 has been asked to limit his meetings because of problems with his 'concentration span'.

Ministers and officials have been warned that, if a meeting lasts longer than half an hour, then 'after that he just starts doodling'.

The American embassy has also advised that UK-US business deals announced during the trip should not be 'sold as a UK win' because that would be likely to anger the President.

Previous state visitors have included Chinese President Xi Jinping (pictured with the Queen and his wife Peng Liyuan in 2015) and King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia +13

The secret service will be planning the routes taken by the President in the £1.5 million bomb-proof vehicle known as 'The Beast'.

Two of the stretched, armourplated vehicles will be flown into Britain on US Air Force Boeing C- 17 transport planes in advance.

One is used as a decoy to confuse potential attackers. The seven-seat black limos have Kevlar-reinforced tyres and steel rims that can keep the vehicle moving even if the tyres have been destroyed.
They can be turned into a sealed panic room with their own oxygen tanks.
