Virginia gun proposal puts concealed carry agreements with other states in jeopardy

(Worthy News) - Virginia Democratic Del. Dan Helmer filed a bill Wednesday that would give the commonwealth’s attorney general, Mark Herring, discretion over which states’ carry permits Virginia would continue to recognize.

Virginia’s current concealed carry reciprocity law recognizes every out-of-state concealed carry license, but the new proposal from Helmer could limit the number of out-of-state concealed carry permits Virginia recognizes if Herring deems their carry permit requirements insufficient.

“This is certainly more restrictive than the current process, which recognizes everyone's permit. He can start saying, well, for this reason or that reason, I'm not going to recognize their permit now,” Virginia lawyer George Lyon of Arsenal Attorneys told the Washington Examiner. 2020 will see two supermoons and a blue moon close to elections
Monday, January 13, 2020 | Tag Cloud Tags: News, Worthy News

(Worthy News) - The year 2020 will see 13 full moons, two supermoons, and a blue moon in October around the same time as the US Presidential election.
A blue moon happens once every 32 months when a full moon rises twice in the same month, and this year will occur on Halloween--less than a week from the elections on Nov. 3--following the first full moon in October on Oct. 1.

A supermoon can appear as 14% larger and 30% brighter than a normal moon because of its proximity to earth, and the moon will appear in this form on March 9th and April 7th, 2020, though the next blood moon that believers are especially keen to see won't appear until May 26, 2021.

Muslim herdsmen kill a dozen more Christians in Nigeria
Muslim Fulani herdsmen killed 13 Christians in Plateau State, Nigeria on Wednesday, Jan. 8, adding to a body count that has seen scores of Christian farmers murdered by the pastoralists in the last few years.
Raiders from the predominantly Muslim ethnic group that spans West Africa forced residents to flee the Christian village of Kulben into the surrounding forests when they entered the village and began firing in all directions.
“This attack on my people by these herdsmen comes as a rude shock to us, as efforts have been made by security agencies to curtail such incessant attacks on our people,” said Bala Fwengje, a local Nigerian lawmaker.
The UK-based Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust (HART) found that over 1,000 Christians were killed in Nigeria in 2019 by the combined Islamic extremist efforts of Boko Haram, the West African ISIS, and the Muslim Fulani herder group.

Grave of martyred pastor destroyed in Iran
The grave of an Assemblies of God pastor from Mashad, Iran--the same town in which Soleimani replacement Brig. Gen. Esmail Qaani rose through the ranks--was destroyed this past December by the Iranian regime.
Hussein Soodman was the only Christian in Iran to be formally put to death for the "apostasy" of converting from Islam to Christianity when a Sharia court sentenced him in December 1990, ending his 24 years of ministry in the Islamic Republic.

Esmail Qaani, who has taken over as Quds Force commander in place of slain terrorist leader and Hezbollah architect Qassem Soleimani, was appointed deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps in Mashad in 1988 and thus would have wielded a measure of authority in the decision to condemn pastor Soodman.

“Police are now working on the premise arson is to blame for much of the devastation caused this bushfire season,” reports 7 News Sydney.

New environmental policies that restrict “prescribed burning,” where land owners burn off flammable ground cover in cooler months in a controlled manner so it doesn’t contribute to bushfires, have also exacerbated the problem.

The fact that the bushfires were deliberately started and have nothing to do with man-made climate change hasn’t prevented that being the dominant narrative.

Last week, Bernie Sanders blamed those who were “delaying action on climate change” for “the blood-red sky and unbreathable air in Australia because of raging forest fires.”

Virtue signaling celebrities have also pounced on the issue to push their dogma, including at the Golden Globes last night when Australian-born Cate Blanchett asserted, “When one country faces a climate disaster, we all face a climate disaster.”

Nearly 200 People Arrested Across Australia For Deliberately Starting Bushfires
Yet media & celebrities continue to blame “climate change.”

Authorities in Australia have arrested close to 200 people for deliberately starting the bushfires that have devastated the country, yet the media and celebrities continue to blame “climate change” for the disaster.

The fires have caused at least 18 deaths, destroyed thousands of homes, millions of hectares of land and killed hundreds of millions of animals.

A total of 183 people have been arrested by police in Queensland, NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania for lighting bushfires over the last few months, figures obtained by news agency AAP show.

Alex Jones is live on air right now breaking down how the carbon tax cult is seizing this tragedy to push for planetary government and taxation. He’s also taking calls from Aussies!

In New South Wales, 24 people were arrested for arson, risking prison sentences of up to 25 years.

In Queensland, police concluded that 103 of the fires had been deliberately lit, with 98 people, 67 of them juveniles, having been identified as the culprits.

“The link between arsonists and the deadly fires that devastate Australia every summer is well known and well documented, with the rate of deliberately lit fires escalating rapidly during the school holiday period,” reports Breitbart’s Simon Kent.

Around 85 per cent of bushfires are caused by humans either deliberately or accidentally starting them, according to Dr Paul Read, co-director of the National Centre for Research in Bushfire and Arson.

“About 85 per cent are related to human activity, 13 per cent confirmed arson and 37 per cent suspected arson,” he said. “The remainder are usually due to reckless fire lighting or even just children playing with fire.”

Read also highlighted the link between school holidays and kids starting fires, commenting, “School holidays are a prime time for fire bugs, but especially over summer.” The kids have got time to get out there and light, and the most dangerous adults choose hot days.”

Europe Under Siege from People-Smuggling Gangs
by Soeren Kern  •  January 7, 2020 at 5:00 am
Current conditions in Hungary are ripe for a repeat of the migration crisis in 2015 and... the country is now in a "state of crisis".... More than 100,000 migrants are now gathered in the Western Balkans and although "the situation is still under control," it is "beginning to look like the big crisis in 2015." — Szilárd Németh, a senior official at Hungary's Defense Ministry, December 1, 2019.

Illegal immigration throughout Europe continues unabated. In France, for instance, nearly 20,000 migrants have been arrested so far in 2019, according to the police website France Bleu, which also reported that 189 people smugglers have been arrested since January 1.

In Britain, The Telegraph newspaper reported that Albanian people smugglers were posting advertisements on social media platforms, including Facebook, promoting their ability to get people into Europe. The ads are accompanied by TripAdvisor-style feedback comments from "satisfied" customers.... people smuggling gangs generate profits of up to £6 billion (€7 billion; $8 billion) a year...

The light sentences reflect the leniency of the Spanish justice system, which appears to encourage, rather than deter, people smuggling gangs.

People smuggling gangs generate profits of up to £6 billion ($8 billion) a year, with migrants often paying more than £10,000 ($13,000) to secure illegal entry into the UK, according to the deputy director of Britain's National Crime Agency. Pictured: Members of an international people smuggling gang at a courthouse in Kecskemet, Hungary on June 21, 2017, during their trial in connection with deaths of 71 migrants found in an abandoned truck in Austria in 2015. Hungarian police recently discovered two tunnels used to smuggle migrants into Hungary from Serbia. The tunnels were found at the same time that Hungarian police reported a five-fold increase in the number of migrants attempting to enter Hungary.

Hungary is not alone: Border authorities in countries across the European Union are struggling to stanch renewed flows of illegal migration. More than 126,500 migrants from Africa, Asia and the Middle East illegally entered the EU during 2019, according to the International Organization for Migration.

On November 29, Hungarian police detained 44 migrants who were found walking along a highway near Ásotthalom, a village in southern Hungary. Police later learned that the migrants had crossed into Hungary from Serbia by crawling through a 34-meter (112-foot) hand-dug tunnel.

Iran abandons nuclear deal after Soleimani killing

(Worthy News) - Iran vowed Sunday to defy the limits placed on its nuclear enrichment by the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and completely abandon the deal, in a response to the killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani that also saw a red flag of Islamic martyrdom and vengeance raised over his funeral service in Qoms.
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, the ascendancy of whose organization in Lebanon was largely due to the work of Soleimani, echoed the defiant tone of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei the same day, declaring a "completely new phase" of aggression against American bases in the region.
“When American troops return in coffins, when they come vertically and return horizontally to the United States of America, then Trump and his administration will know that they lost the region and will lose the elections,” Nasrallah said in a speech that also cautioned against Shi'ite proxies targeting American citizens, saying it would ultimately serve Trump.
Iraqi lawmakers on Sunday also convened a special session of parliament that voted on the question of a continued American troop presence in Iraq, with a majority of 180 parliamentarians voting for the expulsion of the 5,200 remaining soldiers.
The US remained at DEFCON 3 Sunday, "a state of military readiness," according to the website for the alert system, in which the air force is prepared to "deploy and mobilize within 15 minutes time."

First signs of revenge from Iran for death of Soleimani in Syria, Iraq, Kenya

(Worthy News) - Syrian regime forces and Iranian militias fired three missiles at the Conoco gas fields in Deir Ezzor in eastern Syria and six rockets were fired into the Green Zone in Baghdad that houses the US embassy Sunday as tensions flared across the region.

No injuries were reported in the Middle East, though three Americans--one soldier and two service contractors--were killed in a Somali Al Shabab terrorist attack on a US base in Kenya earlier in the day that seemed to be connected to Iranian threats.

After revealing the US currently had in its sights 52 targets of importance to Iranian culture and military morale on Saturday, US President Trump vowed Sunday he would strike back "in a disproportionate manner" for any further American casualties across the region.

An Omani diplomat in Iran was told over the weekend that Tehran was not interested in any detente with the US following the killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, and left the country without meeting with any Iranian officials.

US General and former CIA director David Petraeus called the killing of Soleimani Friday in a drone strike at the Baghdad International Airport "more significant than the killing of Osama bin Laden or even the death of al-Baghdadi."

(Worthy News) - President Trump issued a stern warning to Iran on Saturday through a series of Twitter messages intended to deter the country from retaliating after the U.S.-ordered airstrike that killed Iran's Gen. Qassem Soleimani last week.
"Iran is talking very boldly about targeting certain USA assets as revenge for our ridding the world of their terrorist leader who had just killed an American, & badly wounded many others, not to mention all of the people he had killed over his lifetime, including recently hundreds of Iranian protesters," Trump tweeted.

US base in Kenya attacked by Somali Islamic terrorists

Jordan Hilger, Worthy News Correspondent
(Worthy News) - A military airstrip in Kenya was attacked by Al Qaida-linked Al Shabab early Sunday, destroying several American aircraft, as US and Kenyan military shored up defenses against the Somalian terrorist organization.
This year the US carried out a record 63 drone strikes against Al Shabab across the border in Somalia from its base at Camp Simba in Kenya, but the attack is the first of the kind by the group in targeting US personnel and assets.
US Africa Command is still seeking to determine whether and how many Americans were killed in the strike, but said so far only "infrastructure and equipment" have been identified in the wreckage.
Two Cessna aircraft, one belonging to Kenya and the other to the US, as well as two US helicopters, were destroyed in the attack.

White House notifies Congress of Soleimani strike, fulfilling War Powers Act duties

(Worthy News) - The White House fulfilled its duties under the War Powers Act by sending Congress a notification of the airstrike that killed top Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani.
The Trump administration reportedly notified lawmakers on Saturday; however, all of the contents were classified as it likely contained details on the intelligence that led to the strike. It's unclear if the White House will send a separate, unclassified document that can be publicized.
The move marks the White House's compliance with the 1973 War Powers Act, which requires the president to notify Congress of the "circumstances necessitating the introduction of United States Armed Forces" within 48 hours. The Pentagon announced Soleimani's death by a U.S. airstrike on Thursday.

France: Muslim migrants rape girl and video the rape while praising Allah and invoking the Qur’an
By Pamela Geller - on January 1, 2020
https://gellerreport.com/2020/01/france-muslim-migrants-rape-girl-and-video-the-rape-while-praising-allah-and-invoking-the-quran.html/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook
Another horrible Islamic news story that the media will never cover, let alone the fact that the Qur’an teaches that Infidel women can be lawfully taken for sexual use (cf. its allowance for a man to take “captives of the right hand,” 4:3, 4:24, 23:1-6, 33:50, 70:30).

FRANCE: MUSLIM MIGRANTS RAPE GIRL AND VIDEO THE RAPE WHILE PRAISING ALLAH AND INVOKING THE QUR’AN
By Robert Spencer:, December 31, 2019:

This is no surprise, except to the terminally blinkered, who are everywhere nowadays. Such behavior is sanctioned in Islam if the victim is an Infidel woman. One survivor of a Muslim rape gang in the UK said that her rapists would quote Quran to her, and believed their actions justified by Islam.

The Qur’an teaches that Infidel women can be lawfully taken for sexual use (cf. its allowance for a man to take “captives of the right hand,” 4:3, 4:24, 23:1-6, 33:50, 70:30). The Qur’an says: “O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.” (33:59) The implication there is that if women do not cover themselves adequately with their outer garments, they may be abused, and that such abuse would be justified.

“They raped her while praising Allah. Then they posted the video of the abuse on social media,” translated from “La stuprano inneggiando Allah. Poi postano il video dell’abuso sui social,” by Federico Giuliani, Il Giornale, December 26, 2019:

The rape took place last Thursday in a banlieue south of Paris. Some government officials, instead of wondering about the cause of the terrible violence, pointed the finger at Twitter.

In France, in a banlieu south of Paris, two sixteen-year-olds of African origin raped a minor girl, filmed the abuse, and shared the video on social networks.

During the sexual violence, the attackers repeatedly cited Allah, the Qur’an and Mecca.

The episode, told by French newspapers and then taken up again by La Verità, took place on Thursday, December 19 in Morsang-sur-Orge, in the Essonne department. The perpetrators of the rape, as mentioned, posted the video of the violence on the net. Those brutal images, in addition to being shared by numerous users, allowed investigators to trace the identity of the alleged rapists. The two assailants were arrested last Saturday.

The facts in detail

The sexual assault took place in the entrance hall of a building. The classic tower block typical of those French suburbs, where delinquency, drug dealing, crime and, more generally, degradation reign. The video of the rape lasts about a minute and a half, and has bounced from one social media outlet to another, enjoying particular “success” on Twitter.

The dramatic images begin with the underage victim fleeing, and being chased and insulted by the two sixteen-year-olds. From their mouths come extremely violent sentences: offensive words that are mixed with terms that refer to the Islamic religion. “I swear on the Qur’an of Mecca, shout and you will see the blows I give you,” shouts one of the rapists to the frightened girl.

At another point, the rapists order the young woman to follow them: “In the name of Allah, I swear to you on the Qur’an of Mecca: it is better if you reflect in your mind and that you come with us, because a team is about to arrive […] we are the best, those who are coming will make you regret […] )n my mother I swear to you: you will not come out alive. You will die.” At that point, verbal violence turned into physical violence.

Beyond the serious crime, the attitude of the two rapists highlights for the umpteenth time the danger of the pro-Islamist subculture which is now the owner of the Parisian banlieu. According to this view, women count for nothing. They are only objects that serve to satisfy the desires of men. Of the lower beings to be insulted and beaten at will.

Twitter on the grill

The episode also sparked numerous controversies over how social network managers handled the situation. Yes, because despite the police repeatedly asking Twitter users not to share the video, the footage remained in circulation for hours before being removed.

The French government, at that point, instead of reflecting on the pitiful state which the peripheries of the country are in, thought it better to attack Twitter. The Undersecretary for Equal Opportunity, Marlène Schiappa, had no doubts: “The video is revolting. As soon as I became aware of it, I immediately contacted Twitter to have it removed. Copies are still in circulation. This social network is not up to speed; criminals know it, that’s why they use it.”

The biggest risk now is that French public opinion will not stop to reflect either on the serious crime committed by the two very young Africans, or on the tensions that run through the neighborhoods of the suburbs, but on the functioning of Twitter. In that case it would be a defeat for everyone.

The Monsey Hanukkah Horror
We Jews, descendants of the Maccabees, need to become more Jewish, not less Jewish.

After the synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh we foolishly thought there was only enough hate to last for one day in our civilized society of America. But we were wrong. The list of cities in the headlines with anti-Semitic incidents almost daily grows longer. The virus of hate continues to flourish and incredibly grows stronger. Synagogues have armed guards. Jews are attacked. The darkness overpowers the light in a stunning reversal of the Hanukkah miracle.

It seems just days ago that we were horrified by events in Jersey City. Now, in addition to the Hasidic areas, it is even the exclusive upper East side of Manhattan as well. It does not take peyot, sidelocks, and wide-brimmed black hats to bring out the hatred. It is enough today for the anti-Semites merely to suspect that their victims are Jews.

Let us take a moment to reflect on the remarkable connection between the latest Monsey incident and Hanukkah.

“For the miracles, for the deliverance, for the strength, for the salvation and for the battles” – we thank God for all of these, including the battles. We thank God for Mattathias and his sons who bravely demonstrated that Jews do not believe in passively accepting the efforts of those who seek to destroy us. Jews do not live by the maxim to turn the other cheek. Jews, even those for whom the temple as a dwelling place for God on this earth is the ideal, recognized the need not to rely solely on the Almighty but to put forth all of our own efforts as well to rid us of evil and to make us worthy of God’s presence in our midst.

Hanukkah is the holiday of the Maccabees as much as it is the commemoration of miracles.

It is not a time for silence when anti-Semitic attacks are countered with political platitudes of “zero tolerance” followed by revolving door justice. It is almost impossible to believe that suspects arrested in last week’s string of eight anti-Semitic attacks were quickly released right back into the neighborhoods they allegedly terrorized due to bail reform legislation. New legislation requires arraignment judges to free suspects “in any non-sexual assault that doesn’t cause physical injury, even in cases of hate attacks. Even if there is an injury, then bail could be requested”, but not necessarily granted.

In New York City’s Orthodox neighborhoods Jews are incredulous to discover that even when violent bigots are caught they are immediately released in accord with changed legislation.

Ever since I came to America, fleeing as a young boy from the Europe which made it possible for 6 million Jews to be brutally murdered, I have proudly fulfilled the Hanukkah mitzvah of “publicizing the miracle.” It is Hanukkah which demands of us that we place the menorah by the window facing the street in the outside world. It is our way of imitating the Maccabees. We will not hide our faith. We will proudly announce our identity as Jews.

America to me has always been the blessing that allowed me to walk everywhere, unafraid, with a yarmulke on my head.

Today, for the very first time in my life, someone said to me, “Maybe, for your own sake, it might be safer for you to walk around with a baseball cap instead of your kippah.”

And that of course is the beginning of the end for Jews in every country they have ever lived.

We Jews, descendants of the Maccabees, need – in the spirit of Hanukkah – to become more Jewish, not less Jewish.

Of course I have intensified my prayers. Of course I turn to God and beseech him to help us in this terrible time of danger. But I do not forget that there once was a priest with five sons who joined action to prayer, who proved to the Syrian Greeks that Jews will not choose to be meek victims but rather proud Maccabees.

When Jews are attacked with a machete in a synagogue while celebrating Hanukkah it is way past time for us to make clear – to our politicians, to our neighbors, to our society, to our country – ENOUGH! This will not be allowed to continue - and this time around, after the lessons of the Holocaust, our heroes are the Maccabees, not the Jews of silence.

Jews of Monsey Will Not Be Cowed

Jews of Monsey Will Not Be Cowed
Less than 24 hours after the attack, Jews sang and danced, celebrating the dedication of a new Torah scroll.
Less than 24 hours after five people were stabbed at a rabbi’s home on Forshay Road in Monsey, N.Y., Jews gathered on the lawn to sing and dance as a Torah scroll was dedicated at a nearby synagogue, making for a far different scene from the night beforehand.

On Saturday night, Grafton Thomas, 38, entered the home of Rabbi Chaim Rottenberg and began stabbing people who had come to celebrate the seventh night of Hanukkah. Using what has now been described as a machete, the attacker began slashing at people in the home, though several people reportedly threw objects at him, eventually prompting him to flee.

He then turned his attention to Rottenberg’s synagogue, located on an adjacent lot. Finding the building locked, the attacker returned to his car and fled the scene. He was apprehended several hours later by members of the New York Police Department.

While a motive for the attack has not been released, on Sunday New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo called the rampage an “act of domestic terrorism” after meeting with Rottenberg. Cuomo said he planned to introduce legislation that would increase the penalty of such cases to reflect the seriousness of the crime.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo meets with of Rabbi Chaim Rottenberg in Monsey, N.Y. after an attack in his home.
A statement released by Thomas’s lawyer, Michael Sussman, said he had suffered from a “long history of mental illness and hospitalizations,” and had “no known history of anti-Semitism.” Thomas pleaded not guilty to five counts of attempted murder and one count of burglary at his arraignment on Sunday. Bail was set at $5 million.

“We need more police presence. We need to feel more secure, and we don’t feel that now.”
Nevertheless, in the federal hate-crime criminal complaint on Thomas—an African-American who grew up in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, N.Y., and now lives with his mother in Greenwood Lake, N.Y., about 20 miles from Monsey—said that law-enforcement agents recovered journals from his mother that included anti-Semitic references, as well as Internet searches on Adolf Hitler and where to find local Jewish synagogues.

Eli Cohen, a lifelong resident of Monsey who grew up going to the Rottenberg shul, said the attack has impacted the whole community. “We are all concerned. People are nervous,” he said, noting that kids can no longer walk to synagogue on their own because no one knows what will happen. “Monsey used to be a nice, calm, quiet place, and now, not so much.”

On any given Shabbat morning, some 200-plus people attend Shabbat services at the Rottenberg shul. Holiday programs, like the Hanukkah gathering the rabbi was holding at his home on Saturday night, can draw hundreds more people from the community.

Rivkie Feiner, a member of the Jewish Federation and Foundation of Rockland County’s Jewish Community Relations Council and a board member of the JCC Rockland, was spending Saturday evening with her children at a skating rink less than two miles from Rottenberg’s home when her phone began shrill with notifications about the attack.

As the assailant was on the run and no one knew where he was heading, Feiner began urging everyone standing outside of the indoor rink to come inside and wait.

“It was scary,” she recalled. “Then you started hearing the sirens, the ambulances, the helicopters flying above.”

“People don’t understand the ripple effect. It’s horrible. The entire community is connected through social media, and even our kids hear about it,” said Feiner, a communal leader who was at the scene for a while on Saturday night and met with government officials Sunday. “My 8-year-old came over and asked me what’s a stabbing, and my 11-year-old wouldn’t go to bed until we checked that all the doors were locked. He just wanted to know that the person was caught.”

According to Richard Priem, the Anti-Defamation League’s associate regional director for New York and New Jersey, the attack in Monsey was the 10th anti-Semitic attack recorded by the group since Dec. 23 in the region. Many of those attacks happened in the borough of Brooklyn, N.Y., and were directed at Chassidic Jews who are identifiable by their dress, which for men include long black coats, black hats and on Shabbat, wide fur hats known as streimels.

“The Jewish community is utterly terrified,” Evan Bernstein, the regional director of the Anti-Defamation League of New York and New Jersey, said in a statement. “No one should have to live like this.”

The attack also came less than three weeks after a deadly attack on a Jewish market in Jersey City, N.J., where two members of the Chassidic community were among three civilians and a police detective killed during an hours-long siege. The two attackers in that case—a man and a woman—were also killed.

According to Feiner, members of the Chassidic community in Rockland County and elsewhere have expressed how vulnerable they feel because the way they dress makes them identifiably Jewish. “We need more police presence,” she said. “We need to feel more secure, and we don’t feel that now.”

Priem said “It’s hard to pinpoint a specific cause as to why this is happening, but we do know that something meaningful needs to change. We need change from the top level—from the government down to the grassroots.”

In the hours after the attack, life began to return to normal—or at least a “new normal”—in Monsey. People continued to go to synagogues throughout town to pray and shoppers filled local stores, including the kosher supermarkets.

Even Rabbi Rottenberg continued with his plans. Just hours after the attack—his son was among those who had been stabbed—the rabbi addressed members of his congregation. He also recited the Jewish prayer of thanksgiving, which is said when a person survives a dangerous situation.

For Priem, who along with his colleagues had been on the scene for hours, seeing the Torah procession stop in front of the Rottenberg residence was a particularly powerful moment.

“This shows that despite the fear, they continue to adhere to their faith,” he said. “They won’t be cowed to change.”

They’re Killing Us Like Dogs: A Massacre in Bolivia and a Plea for Help
“The military has guns and a license to kill; we have nothing.” – A Bolivian mother shot by police

Iam writing from Bolivia just days after witnessing the November 19 military massacre at the Senkata gas plant in the indigenous city of El Alto, and the tear-gassing of a peaceful funeral procession on November 21 to commemorate the dead. These are examples, unfortunately, of the modus operandi of the de facto government that seized control in a coup that forced Evo Morales out of power.

The coup has spawned massive protests, with blockades set up around the country as part of a national strike calling for the resignation of this new government. One well-organized blockade is in El Alto, where residents set up barriers surrounding the Senkata gas plant, stopping tankers from leaving the plant and cutting off La Paz’s main source of gasoline.

Determined to break the blockade, the government sent in helicopters, tanks and heavily armed soldiers in the evening of November 18. The next day, mayhem broke out when the soldiers began teargassing residents, then shooting into the crowd. I arrived just after the shooting. The furious residents took me to local clinics where the wounded were taken. I saw the doctors and nurses desperately trying to save lives, carrying out emergency surgeries in difficult conditions with a shortage of medical equipment. I saw five dead bodies and dozens of people with bullet wounds. Some had just been walking to work when they were struck by bullets. A grieving mother whose son was shot cried out between sobs: “They’re killing us like dogs.” In the end, there were 8 confirmed dead.

The next day, a local church became an improvised morgue, with the dead bodies–some still dripping blood–lined up in pews and doctors performing autopsies. Hundreds gathered outside to console the families and contribute money for coffins and funerals. They mourned the dead and cursed the government for the attack and the local press for refusing to tell the truth about what happened.

The local news coverage about Senkata was almost as startling as the lack of medical supplies. The de facto government has threatened journalists with sedition should they spread “disinformation” by covering protests, so many don’t even show up. Those who do often spread disinformation. The main TV station reported three deaths and blamed the violence on the protesters, giving airtime to the new Defense Minister Fernando Lopez who made the absurd claim that soldiers did not fire “a single bullet” and that “terrorist groups” had tried to use dynamite to break into the gasoline plant.

It’s little wonder that many Bolivians have no idea what is happening. I have interviewed and spoken to dozens of people on both sides of the political divide. Many of those who support the de facto government justify the repression as a way to restore stability. They refuse to call President Evo Morales’ ouster a coup and claim there was fraud in the October 20 election that sparked the conflict. These claims of fraud, which were prompted by a report by the Organization of American States, have been debunked by the Center for Economic and Policy Research, a think tank in Washington, D.C.

Morales, the first indigenous president in a country with an indigenous majority, was forced to flee to Mexico after he, his family and party leaders received death threats and attacks–including the burning of his sister’s house. Regardless of the criticisms, people may have of Evo Morales, especially his decision to seek a fourth term, it is undeniable that he oversaw a growing economy that decreased poverty and inequality. He also brought relative stability to a country with a history of coups and upheavals. Perhaps most importantly, Morales was a symbol that the country’s indigenous majority could no longer be ignored. The de facto government has defaced indigenous symbols and insisted on the supremacy of Christianity and the Bible over indigenous traditions that the self-declared president, Jeanine Añez, has characterized as “satanic.” This surge in racism has not been lost on the indigenous protesters, who demand respect for their culture and traditions.

Jeanine Añez, who was the third highest-ranking member of the Bolivian Senate, swore herself in as president after Morales’ resignation, despite not having a necessary quorum in the legislature to approve her as president. The people in front of her in the line of succession – all of whom belong to Morales’ MAS party – resigned under duress. One of those is Victor Borda, president of the lower house of congress, who stepped down after his home was set on fire and his brother was taken hostage.

Upon taking power, Áñez’s government threatened to arrest MAS legislators, accusing them of “subversion and sedition”, despite the fact that this party holds a majority in both chambers of congress. The de facto government then received international condemnation after issuing a decree granting immunity to the military in its efforts to re-establish order and stability. This decree has been described as a “license to kill” and “carte blanche” to repress, and it has been strongly criticized by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

The result of this decree has been death, repression and massive violations of human rights. In the week and a half since the coup, 32 people have died in protests, with more than 700 wounded. This conflict is spiraling out of control and I fear it will only get worse. Rumors abound on social media of military and police units refusing the de facto government’s orders to repress. It is not hyperbole to suggest that this could result in a civil war. That’s why so many Bolivians are desperately calling for international help. “The military has guns and a license to kill; we have nothing,” cried a mother whose son had just been shot in Senkata. “Please, tell the international community to come here and stop this.”

I have been calling for Michelle Bachelet, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and former president of Chile, to join me on the ground in Bolivia. Her office is sending a technical mission to Bolivia, but the situation requires a prominent figure. Restorative justice is needed for the victims of violence and dialogue is needed to defuse tensions so Bolivians can restore their democracy. Ms. Bachelet is highly respected in the region; her presence could help save lives and bring peace to Bolivia.

Hamas operatives are being allowed to plan attacks against Israel from Turkey, according to an eye-opening report in The Telegraph.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan warmly greeted Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Istanbul on Saturday, but the relationship between the two is deeper and closer than with Turkey’s surrounding nations.

According to The Telegraph, Israel has frequently told Turkey that attacks were being planned on its soil, but Erdoğan said “We will keep on supporting our brothers in Palestine.”
In transcripts with suspects interrogated by the Israel Police, it was revealed, according to the report,  that Hamas members in Istanbul are managing operations in Jerusalem and the West Bank. One such event was the assassination attempt on the former mayor of Jerusalem Nir Barkat, earlier this year.
Hamas has been granted sanctuary in the Middle-Eastern country despite the terrorist organization’s status in both the West and now some Arab nations.
In a 2011 interview with PBS, then-prime minister Erdoğan said: “Let me give you a very clear message. I don’t see Hamas as a terror organization. Hamas is a political party. And it is an organization. It is a resistance movement trying to protect its country under occupation.”
According to The Telegraph report, Hamas denied planning attacks from Turkey and said Israel’s claims are “baseless allegations” which will damage political relations with the country.

The Big Hole in the China Trade Agreement
by Gordon G. Chang
December 17, 2019 at 5:00 am
Moreover, China's officials, once they have encryption keys and access to the China network of a foreign firm, will be in a good position to penetrate the networks of that firm outside China. Therefore, Beijing will soon steal data stored on foreign networks and put companies, like Nortel Networks, out of business or ruin them to the point where Chinese entities can buy them up at reduced prices. Do we really want the Fortune 500 to be owned by China?

There is, of course, no point in including in the trade deal forced taking and intellectual property protections if they do not cover the cybersecurity rules.

Washington will have to do something fast to protect American businesses in China — and the American economy — because the Phase One deal is clearly inadequate. There is, after all, a big hole in the center of it.

There's something missing from the "Phase One" trade agreement with China, announced Friday. And it's something critically important. Yet, Larry Kudlow, President Trump's director of the National Economic Council, appeared not to know about it afterwards.

"We will see," said Kudlow in response to Maria Bartiromo on "Sunday Morning Futures," her Fox News Channel show, as she asked him about Beijing's new "cybersecurity" rules. "There's a large IP chapter in this deal and there's also a large forced technology transfer chapter in this deal. I don't think we know enough about these new Chinese rules and we'll have to look at that and by the way if they do violate them of course we will take action."

Bartiromo was referring to two sets of Chinese rules. On December 1, Beijing implemented the Multi-Level Protection Scheme 2.0, issued pursuant to the 2016 Cybersecurity Law. On January 1, China's Cryptography Law becomes effective.

These measures prohibit foreign companies from encrypting data so that it cannot be read by the Chinese central government and the Communist Party of China. Businesses will be required to turn over encryption keys. Companies will not be able to employ virtual private networks to keep data secret, and some believe they will no longer be allowed to use private servers.

Together, these measures allow Beijing to take all the data and communications of foreign companies.

Beijing's complete visibility into the networks of foreign companies will have extremely disadvantages consequences. For instance, Chinese officials will be permitted, under Chinese law, to share seized information with state enterprises. This sharing means the enterprises will weaponize the information against their foreign competitors.

The U.S. Trade Representative's skimpy Fact Sheet for the Phase One deal does not address the December 1 and January 1 rules. There is, of course, no point in including in the trade deal forced taking and intellectual property protections if they do not cover the cybersecurity rules.

Judging from Kudlow's nonspecific response to Bartiromo and his admission of not knowing much about "these new Chinese rules," the administration apparently has not considered the linkages between them and the trade deal. If that is indeed the case, the Phase One deal will be pointless. Anything — information, data, communications, trade secrets, or technology — protected under its terms will nonetheless be available to Chinese authorities pursuant to the December 1 and January 1 rules.

The remedy? President Trump can pull out of the Phase One deal — something he should do anyway — or use his considerable powers under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 to prohibit American companies from complying with the new cybersecurity rules or from storing data in China. On August 23, Trump threatened to use the act to force companies out of that country.

Washington will have to do something fast to protect American businesses in China — and the American economy — because the Phase One deal is clearly inadequate. There is, after all, a big hole in the center of it.

An ancient tomb in Jerusalem prized for its archaeological and religious importance was reopened for visits Thursday by France, which owns it, after a dispute over access scuttled an earlier attempt.

The site known as the Tomb of the Kings in East Jerusalem can now be visited during set hours twice per week, but visitors must pre-register online and pay a NIS 10 fee ($3, €2.50), the French consulate said.

Around 30 people — the most allowed at one time due to the sensitivity of the site — visited when the gates opened on Thursday morning, mainly ultra-Orthodox Jews who wanted to pray inside.

Around a dozen other ultra-Orthodox danced and prayed outside the gates while they waited for their turn to visit the 2,000-year-old tomb as police kept a close eye.

“This is a special event,” said Yehuda Twerski, a 20-year-old ultra-Orthodox Jew from New York studying religion in Jerusalem.

“We’re going in there to pray. Perhaps with proper negotiations maybe it will be open more often to the public.”

Ultra-Orthodox Jews describe the tomb as a holy burial site of ancient Jewish kings.

France had attempted to open the site to visitors in June after having kept it closed since 2010, initially due to renovations but later because attempts to contest its ownership complicated its reopening.

It however immediately re-closed the site after a group of more than a dozen ultra-Orthodox tried to enter and pray, shoving toward the gate, despite not having signed up as requested.

The site is a remarkable example of a Roman-era tomb, considered among the largest in the region.

Its unique status, Jewish veneration of the burial site and its location in the disputed east of the city added to complications in reopening it.

Archaeological sites in East Jerusalem are often freighted with religious significance and questions linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

There had been a challenge at Israel’s rabbinical court — which rules on matters related to Jewish law and holy sites — over access to the tomb and France’s ownership.

Before reopening the site, France sought guarantees from Israel it would not face legal challenges as well as commitments on how visits would be managed.

Visitors are not allowed to descend into the tomb itself and can only visit the exterior, which includes ritual baths and an ancient frieze above its entry.

Excavations of the site began in the 1860s, with Felicien de Saulcy of France taking on the project in 1863 and seeking to confirm it was the tomb of the biblical kings. That theory has been ruled out, but the name has endured.

Several sarcophagi were found inside and are now in the Louvre museum in Paris, including one with an Aramaic inscription. According to the most commonly accepted theory, it refers to Queen Helena of Adiabene, in today’s Iraqi Kurdistan, and she may have built the tomb for her dynasty.

After de Saulcy’s excavation, the tomb was purchased by the Pereire brothers, a Jewish banking family in Paris that would later hand the property over to France.

He was widely criticised for failing to show remorse for his association with the disgraced financier or empathy with Epstein's victims during his television appearance.

He has resigned from a large number of patronages and seen organisations he was once involved with sever ties.

Miss Roberts claimed in court papers in Florida that she was forced to have sex with Andrew when she was aged 17, below the state's age of consent.

However, that allegation was struck out by a judge in 2015 for being 'immaterial and impertinent'.

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán: Europe's Solitary Defender of Persecuted Christians

"Those we are helping now can give us the greatest help in saving Europe. We are giving persecuted Christians what they need: homes, hospitals, and schools, and we receive in return what Europe needs most: a Christian faith, love and perseverance". — Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Daily News Hungary, November 28, 2019.

"Our estimation is that more than 90 percent of Christian have already left Iraq and almost 50 percent of Christians in Syria have left the country". — Ignatius Aphrem II, Patriarch of the Syrian Orthodox Church.

European leaders, rather than being embarrassed, should make the condition of Christians under Islam the starting point of their conversations with Muslims.

"The fate of Eastern Christians and other minorities is the prelude to our own fate." — Former French Prime Minister François Fillon, Valeurs Actuelles, December 12, 2019.

"There is an ongoing persecution of Christians. For months, we bishops have been denouncing what is happening in Burkina Faso" Bishop Kjustin Kientega recently said, "but nobody is listening to us." "Evidently", he concluded, "the West is more concerned with protecting its own interests".

In a recent series of a transnational tragedies, 14 Christians were murdered in an attack on a church in Burkina Faso, 11 Christians were murdered in an attack on a bus in Kenya and seven Christians were murdered by Boko Haram in Cameroon. These three deadly attacks by Islamists in the same week give an idea of the intensity and frequency of global anti-Christian persecution.

Bishop Kientega was reporting a fact: the West is not listening to their plight. "While the Belgian government decided in 2011 to send F-16s to Libya to protect civilians threatened by Gaddafi, in 2014 it took no concrete measures to help the minorities in Iraq", wrote Le Vif.

Sweden: Confronting Reality
by Judith Bergman  •  December 14, 2019 at 5:00 am

One problem is that the Swedish state itself contributes indirectly to the spread of extremism. The Swedish Security Service (Säpo) has found that a "relatively large" number of organizations with links to violent extremism have been using Sweden's state and municipal grant systems, which Säpo says could "contribute to radicalization and thus growth in extremist environments in Sweden."

According to Säpo, individuals from Islamist groups are using public-funded schools, cultural associations and foundations as platforms to spread extremist ideology within Sweden.

"Of course, the segregation, exclusion and long-standing uncontrolled immigration that is now driving serious crime did not suddenly arise. Responsibility for years of ill-conceived policies -- and the inability to address the problems -- is shared by many.... [I]t is quite clear that gang criminality, shootings and executions are strongly linked to excessive immigration and to bad integration. How can you even pretend anything else?" -- Ulf Kristersson, leader of the Moderate Party, Facebook, November 17, 2019

The question now is how the Moderate Party will transform Kristersson's apology into "concrete political action" that can stop Swedish reality from deteriorating even further.

The situation in Sweden continues to deteriorate. Last month, a 15-year-old was shot to death and another teenager seriously wounded in a pizzeria in Malmö. (Image source: iStock)
Back in February and March 2017 BBC News ran a number of articles about Trump's much vilified remarks about Sweden, including one with the headline, "Trump's wrong, it's 'quiet and safe' in Malmo." One article in particular, "All eyes on Malmo but not because of Trump" painted an idyllic picture of the lives of expats in Malmö. It spoke, among others, about a young American woman working in Malmö, Susanna Lewis, in the following way:

"As a woman, she is also used to being prepared and watchful as she walks alone in other places, yet she does not feel afraid in Malmö city centre or its outer suburbs".

The article went on to quote her: "I never have had that fear in Sweden. This is the safest place I've ever lived."

Now, however, even the BBC appears to have discovered that Sweden suffers from serious problems. In November, the BBC published an article headlined, "Sweden's 100 explosions this year: What's going on?"

Turkey: Murder of Women Reaches Epidemic Proportions
by Uzay Bulut  •  December 11, 2019 at 4:00 am

Facebook Twitter WhatsApp Telegram Send Print
The cause of 50% of the killings was not determined, but 16% of the women were killed because they wanted to make decisions about their lives, such as wanting a divorce, rejecting offers of reconciliation or even for not answering the phone when called by their men. 13% of the women were killed for "economic reasons."

According to the Turkish women's-rights platform, "We Will Stop Femicide," 652 women were killed by men in the year-and-a-half period prior to November 2018 -- 36 of whom were murdered in October of that year.

"One of the reasons why such a large number of women fall victim to violence is the reluctance and even prevention of relevant institutions to implement current laws." — The Central Women's Committee of Turkey's Human Rights Association (HRA), "Violence against women is a result of discriminatory policies," August 26, 2019.

"There was no finger left unbroken, no women left unbeaten for the last two seasons of a show aired on a pro-government TV channel..." — İlhan Taşcı, Republican People's Party deputy and Radio and Television Supreme Council Member.

"In our religion, the life, dignity and rights of women are untouchable and entrusted [to men]." — Ali Erbaş, President of Diyanet, Turkey's Directorate of Religious Affairs.

The murder of women by male relatives -- particularly spouses or former spouses -- has become a dangerous trend in Turkey. 652 women were killed in Turkey by men in the year-and-a-half period prior to November 2018, according to the Turkish women's-rights platform, "We Will Stop Femicide." (Image source: iStock)
On November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, thousands of Turkish women took part in demonstrations at Istanbul's Taksim Square. The women were protesting the increasing number of murders in the country committed by men against female family members. After reading a statement to the press, the demonstrators were attacked by police with tear gas and plastic bullets.

The murder of women by male relatives -- particularly spouses or former spouses -- has become a dangerous trend in Turkey. The brutal murder, on August 18, of 38-year-old Emine Bulut by her ex-husband -- in front of their 10-year-old daughter -- is one particularly noteworthy case.

Norway: A Fake "Translation"
by Bruce Bawer  •  December 10, 2019 at 4:00 am

This 2013 Norwegian-language "Koran" is available online. A perusal of key passages, however, shows that it bears little or no resemblance to the actual Koran.

Let us hope that the word gets around that the book they are being handed is not really the Koran at all.

The Norwegian-language Koran translation that will be handed out to Norwegians at stands in Oslo and, perhaps, Bergen, bears little or no resemblance to the actual Koran. (Image source: iStock)
To borrow a phrase from Lewis Carroll, the news about the aftermath of a public Koran-burning in Kristiansand, Norway, on November 16, keeps getting curiouser and curiouser.

As explained in previous pieces here, the 30 or more police officers who were on hand at the event, which was organized by a group called Stop the Islamization of Norway (Stopp Islamiseringen av Norge – SIAN) were under secret orders from the chief of the Norwegian police, Benedicte Bjørnland, not just to douse any flaming Koran but to keep SIAN members from setting fire to a copy of the Muslim holy book in the first place. Bjørnland had maintained that the so-called "racism clause" of Norway's criminal law gave her the power to issue such orders, while the Minister of Justice, Jøran Kallmyr, made the puzzling comment that while burning the Koran was legal, it could "become" a crime, a statement that made no more sense in Norwegian than it does in English.

Sweden: Muslim screams, “We Arabs are here to take over your country,” Swede who insults him gets fined
DEC 7, 2019 3:00 PM BY ROBERT SPENCER69 COMMENTS
Some of the Muslim migrants in Sweden are there to take over the country, and make no secret of that fact, but if you murmur a word of protest, you are “Islamophobic,” and must be punished. Submit quietly: it’s the Swedish way.

“Swedish Man Who Insulted Muslim For Threat to ‘Take Over Your Fucking Country’ Charged With Hate Crime,” by Paul Joseph Watson, Summit News, December 5, 2019:

A 53-year-old Swede who insulted a Muslim man for posting a video threat to “take over your fucking country” was hit with hate crime charges.

This is Sweden. Of course he was.

“We Arabs are here to take over your fucking country so go down on your fucking knees and suck my cock your Swedish little whore,” said the Arab man in an angry rant posted to Facebook.

The 53-year-old Swedish man responded on a Facebook group called ‘Political Facts’ with some strong words of his own.

“Disgusting arab crabs disappear from here,” he wrote.

The man was reported to police and called in for an interrogation at Kristianstad where he was asked about his views on immigration.

He was subsequently sentenced by Kristianstad’s district court for hate speech against a protected group and forced to pay SEK 22,200 (roughly $2,300 US dollars).

The court argued that the man’s comments were aimed at Arabs and not just at the individual.

The man appealed the decision to the High Court, but it was upheld, although his fine was reduced to SEK 16,200 in addition to another SEK 800 he was asked to pay to the Crime Victims Fund….

Pro-democracy voters celebrating in Hong Kong
Hong Kong's leader Carrie Lam has said the government will "seriously reflect" after local elections saw massive gains by pro-democracy candidates.

Seventeen of the 18 district councils are now controlled by pro-democracy councillors, according to local media.

The election, the first since the wave of anti-Beijing protests began, saw an unprecedented turnout of more than 71%.

It is being seen as a stinging rebuke of Ms Lam's leadership and a show of support for the protest movement.

Hong Kong's young winners and the veterans they toppled
Hong Kong has seen months of increasingly violent protests since Ms Lam tried to introduce a controversial bill enabling extradition to China.

Carrie Lam has become increasingly unpopular in Hong Kong
In a statement released online on Monday, Ms Lam said the government respected the results.

She said many felt the results reflected "people's dissatisfaction with the current situation and the deep-seated problems in society".

The government would "listen to the opinions of members of the public humbly and seriously reflect", she said.

How did people vote?
Some 2.94 million people voted in the election, compared with 1.4 million in 2015.

Pro-democracy candidates won close to 60% of the total vote on Sunday, but achieved a landslide in terms of seats because of the first-past-the-post system, local media report.

Pro-democracy contenders were victorious in 347 of the 452 district council seats up for grabs; pro-Beijing candidates won 60 seats; while independents - many of them pro-democracy - got 45, according to the South China Morning Post.

In the last election four years ago, pro-Beijing councillors won 298 seats, but the distribution of these seats meant they took control of all 18 district councils.

They retained control of only the Islands District Council after Sunday's vote.

Seven people have died as violent storms swept through parts of France, Greece and Italy over the weekend, causing flash floods, landslides and the collapse of an overpass.

Greek media described the storms as leaving a trail of “biblical destruction” in some areas of the country while the overpass collapse in northern Italy brought back a chilling reminder of Genoa’s Morandi bridge giving way during a thunderstorm in August 2018, killing 43 people.

Flash floods in France’s Côte d’Azur claimed the lives of four people, while two others are believed to still be missing. Three of the victims were found in cars that were swept away in floods in the Var region, and the fourth was among a group being rescued by the fire brigade when the dinghy carrying them to safety capsized.

One of the worst affected towns was Roquebrune-sur-Argens in the Var, where the Argens River rose seven metres. The French meteorological office said three months’ worth of rain had fallen in less than 48 hours.

Members of the French civil defence took part in rescue operations in a number of flooded areas around Cannes and other coastal towns.

The orange alert was lifted in the Var and Alpes-Maritimes regions on Monday as the water receded, leaving an estimated 4,500 homes without electricity. Two other French departments, the Puy-de-Dôme and the Gironde, were placed on high flooding alert.

Jean-Luc Videlaine, the prefect for the Var region, said the rain had been of “historic” intensity and there was considerable damage.

Jean-Pierre Hameau of Météo France said the storms and flooding should not be blamed on climate change. Hameau said the phenomena, known in France as cévenols, or Mediterraneans, were relatively frequent in the region.

“They occur three or six times a year. It often begins in September when the Mediterranean is warm and there is rising hot air in the south,” Hameau said.

“This usually happens in September and October, but sometimes we find these conditions in November. It’s not linked to global warming. We had these cévenols before and there hasn’t been an increase since temperatures rose. However, we have noted an increase in the intensity of the rains.”

Christians have been living in the Holy Land since the time of Jesus, but Gazan Christians are a tiny minority in a big conflict. With less than 1,000 Christians left in Gaza, a merciless humanitarian disaster and intense persecution from the Hamas regime makes them one of the most vulnerable groups of Christians in the Middle East. Iran begins to clear path to nuclear weapon

breaking world news iran israel
by Jordan Hilger, Worthy News Correspondent

(Worthy News) - Iran has taken unprecedented steps toward acquiring a nuclear weapon in the last few weeks.

Last week the Islamic Republic announced that it would begin operating 60 of the advanced centrifuges necessary to separating out uranium isotopes for a nuclear weapon, while a few days before it denied entry to UN inspectors who have been allowed to investigate Iranian facilities since 2015.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called the strides toward nuclear capabilities a "breakout" effort by Iran to obtain a weapon as soon as possible, a claim that seems to have been independently confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Association's discovery of uranium particles at an undeclared site Iran once claimed was a carpet factory.

US special envoy for Iran Brian Hook took the same tack with the Islamic Republic that the Trump administration has chosen since abandoning the JCPOA in May 2018, sanctioning 700 more entities and individuals associated with Iran after the announcement.

White House eyes middle-class tax cut proposal ahead of 2020 elections

(Worthy News) - As the economy cools less than a year ahead of President Donald Trump's re-election bid, White House advisers are narrowing in on a tax cut proposal that could shore up support from the middle class.

The Washington Post reported Tuesday that a 15% tax rate for middle earners could be included in such a proposal, according to unnamed sources involved in the deliberations. Asked to confirm that report, a White House spokesperson told Business Insider the administration is "studying numerous proposals that will benefit the middle class."

Another round of tax cuts would face an uncertain path in Congress but could serve as a key campaign message for the president. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed in 2017 was met with sharp backlash because it heavily benefited corporations and was expected to add trillions to the federal deficit. Federal Court Rules Suspicionless Searches of Travelers’ Phones and Laptops Unconstitutional
Government Must Have Reasonable Suspicion of Digital Contraband Before Searching People’s Electronic Devices at the U.S. Border
PRESS RELEASENOVEMBER 12, 2019
BOSTON—In a major victory for privacy rights at the border, a federal court in Boston ruled today that suspicionless searches of travelers’ electronic devices by federal agents at airports and other U.S. ports of entry are unconstitutional.

The ruling came in a lawsuit, Alasaad v. McAleenan, filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), and ACLU of Massachusetts, on behalf of 11 travelers whose smartphones and laptops were searched without individualized suspicion at U.S. ports of entry.

“This ruling significantly advances Fourth Amendment protections for millions of international travelers who enter the United States every year,” said Esha Bhandari, staff attorney with the ACLU’s Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project. “By putting an end to the government’s ability to conduct suspicionless fishing expeditions, the court reaffirms that the border is not a lawless place and that we don’t lose our privacy rights when we travel.”

“This is a great day for travelers who now can cross the international border without fear that the government will, in the absence of any suspicion, ransack the extraordinarily sensitive information we all carry in our electronic devices," said Sophia Cope, EFF Senior Staff Attorney.

The district court order puts an end to Customs and Border Control (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) asserted authority to search and seize travelers’ devices for purposes far afield from the enforcement of immigration and customs laws. Border officers must now demonstrate individualized suspicion of illegal contraband before they can search a traveler’s device.

The number of electronic device searches at U.S. ports of entry has increased significantly. Last year, CBP conducted more than 33,000 searches, almost four times the number from just three years prior.

International travelers returning to the United States have reported numerous cases of abusive searches in recent months. While searching through the phone of Zainab Merchant, a plaintiff in the Alasaad case, a border agent knowingly rifled through privileged attorney-client communications. An immigration officer at Boston Logan Airport reportedly searched an incoming Harvard freshman’s cell phone and laptop, reprimanded the student for friends’ social media postings expressing views critical of the U.S. government, and denied the student entry into the country following the search.

UN: Al-Shabab Remains 'Potent Threat' in Somalia and Region
Wednesday, November 13, 2019 | Tag Cloud Tags: Kenya, News, PLO, Security, Worthy News

breaking christian news al shabaab
(Worthy News) - Al-Shabab extremists in Somalia remain "a potent threat" to regional peace and are now manufacturing home-made explosives, expanding their revenue sources and infiltrating government institutions, U.N. experts say.

The panel of experts' report to the Security Council, circulated Tuesday, said a significant escalation of U.S. airstrikes targeting al-Shabab militants and leaders has kept the al-Qaida-linked group "off-balance" but has had "little effect on its ability to launch regular asymmetric attacks throughout Somalia."

The report said al-Shabab's assault on Jan. 15 on a commercial business complex in Nairobi, Kenya, containing the DusitD2 Hotel "illustrates the danger the group continues to pose to regional peace and security." That attack killed 21 people as well as four gunmen. [ Source: VOA News (Read More...) ]

The wretched and incestuous half-siblings who murdered two of their own children and tried to kill four more enjoyed stamping pets to death and began having sex as teenagers after he was taken from their mother into care, it was revealed today.
Sarah Barrass, 35, and Brandon Machin, 39, were jailed for 35 years yesterday for strangling their son Tristan, 13, in front of 14-year-old Blake before killing him as social services edged toward rescuing them from their chaotic and troubled home life in Sheffield.
After the 12-minute murder spree they attempted to drown a third child in the bath and planned to kill the other three using drugs overdoses, two of whom were under three years of age, but Barrass then called the police.
The horrific case raises major questions about who knew the truth about their relationship and how they kept an illegal sexual relationship secret despite being on the radar of social services since the 1990s.
Today the couple's younger brother Martyn - who shares the same mother - said they were 'evil from birth' and would love stamping on pet mice together as children and bingeing on gory horror films such as Nightmare on Elm Street.

Martyn, who spoke to social services 10 years before the boys' murder, said: 'Those two have been evil since birth. They are both as bad as each other, they are both murdering, evil psychopaths'.

He added: 'They loved killing things and inflicting pain. We had mice. I walked in and Brandon and Sarah were laughing, chasing the mice – stamping on them, killing them. I tried to push them away but they were too strong'.

Chile Enters 26th Day of Protest with Strike, Huge Marches

SANTIAGO, CHILE - Protests against social inequality continued for a 26th day with huge demonstrations across Chile and a national strike that brought much of the country to a standstill Tuesday, while the value of the national currency fell to a record low.

Thousands of people marched peacefully in Santiago, congregating in the central meeting place of Plaza Italia waving the flags of Chile and the Mapuche indigenous group, with whistles and music rising in the air. After nightfall, the demonstrators lighted up the gathering with cellphone screens and green laser light.

But groups of hooded protesters in the capital also fought with police, who responded with water cannons and tear gas. A church in the Lastarria tourist district was ransacked and set on fire Tuesday night, and there were reports of looting at restaurants and shops.

The strike drew widespread participation across the country, generating a holiday atmosphere in many cities. Classes were canceled and some government offices scaled back their services. Some shop and restaurants also were looted.

The coastal city of Valparaiso ground to a halt, with government offices and public and private transport shut down. Protesters threw rocks at some shops in the morning, prompting many to remain closed, while hooded agitators erected barricades and looted. People hurled rocks at the Hotel O'Higgins, an iconic building in Vina del Mar, and ransacked one of the main grocery stores.

Large demonstrations also occurred to the south, in Concepcion, where a government building was evacuated after a fire broke out. In Antofagasta, in the north, barricades impeded traffic, while in Punta Arenas, in the Patagonia region, hundreds of people took to the streets to express their anger.

Silvia Silva, a demonstrator in Santiago, called the strike "historic" and one that "will mark a before and after in our country" as Chileans continue to push for a new constitution drawn up with the direct input of citizens.

"No more abuse. Today we are saying enough, in the most peaceful way possible, to politicians and to those who are in charge of drafting laws in our country," said Luis Casas, who was at her side.

Karla Rubilar, the government spokeswoman, said, "A strike is not the road forward."

Chile is one of the wealthiest countries in Latin America, but it is also one of the most unequal, with a swath of basic services privatized.

A student protest over rising subway fares Oct. 18 has grown into a broad movement demanding reforms to education, health care and pensions. It has been a mostly peaceful movement, though there have been violent clashes between demonstrators and police. Twenty people have been killed and the National Institute of Human Rights in Chile has documented more than 2,000 injuries.

The government of President Sebastian Pinera has responded with a package of social improvements, and on Sunday announced a plan to overhaul the constitution that was enacted during the dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet. But Pinera's proposals have not appeased protesters, who demand a bigger role in reformulating the country's legal principles.

The demonstrations have had an economic cost, too. The National Chamber of Commerce Services and Tourism of Chile estimates up to 100,000 jobs could be lost.

On Tuesday, the Chilean currency continued its downward slide, hitting a record 800 pesos per U.S. dollar. Prior to the demonstrations, it had hovered around 700 to 720 pesos. It closed Tuesday at 781 pesos.

Treasury Minister Ignacio Briones said  the depreciation "is a sign of the instability that we are experiencing."
