Analysis: Israelis should pocket the gains amid the farce of Trump’s plan
Cynics and sceptics of President Trump's peace proposals should look at the opportunity it offers the Palestinians, says national security expert Dr Shany Mor
Dr Shany Mor
By DR SHANY MOR
January 29, 2020, 9:30 am  1
The farce of a US president whose impeachment trial has just taken an unexpected turn against him (with the Bolton revelations) unveiling a radical peace plan to an Israeli prime minister on the day that he failed to secure immunity from three criminal indictments would seem to give free rein to all manner of cynics and sceptics commenting on the hopelessness of it all.

It shouldn’t.

On the contrary, the Trump peace plan is an opportunity for Palestinians and their supporters, Israelis and their supporters, and self-appointed foreign policy experts of all kinds to ask themselves difficult questions
The Palestinians – and the broader pro-Palestinian community of diplomats, activists, academics, and others – owe themselves and the beleaguered people whose cause they claim to champion a firm reckoning with two decades of rejectionism.

There’s nothing special about an Israeli like me pointing out what a terrible mistake it was to turn down Ehud Barak’s offer in 2000 or Ehud Olmert’s in 2008. What is maddening is how few Palestinian voices seem to want to say the same. Maybe it was hard to see in real time, but two decades have passed. Is it even a question that an independent Palestinian state comprising all of Gaza and 95 percent of the West Bank with a position in Jerusalem and no separation fence would be better than what the Palestinians have today?

Trump’s proposed peace plan
And if Israeli offers were so inadequate, that still doesn’t absolve the Palestinian leadership or Palestinian public opinion or pro-Palestinian diplomats and NGO’s from responsibility for rejecting American mediation proposals like the Clinton Parameters in 2001 or the Kerry bridging proposal from 2014. The Trump plan is much worse than what the Palestinians could have had only six years ago. Surely, there must be a lesson here. Is there any sign of it being learned?

The Israelis, especially the Israeli right, is celebrating the Trump plan as a giveaway to Israeli interests. Let’s set aside the plausibility problem for a moment. Is this plan genuinely good for Israel?

There are important concessions to Israeli interests here to be sure, most notably on security and on Jerusalem. Israel should endeavour to pocket these gains the same way the Palestinians pocketed shifting American policies on statehood and borders under the three previous administrations. But the proposed Israeli sovereignty over even isolated settlements, while certainly satisfying to a narrow constituency in Israel’s domestic politics, cannot possibly be an Israeli strategic interest.

Dr Shany Mor, a research fellow at the Chaikin Institute for Geostrategy at the University of Haifa who previously served on Israel’s National Security Council
What good does it do for Israel to have sovereignty of even a dozen isolated enclaves in the territory of a hostile, failing state? What will the military situation look like the day after an inevitable terrorist attack? How far is this really from the nightmare scenario of a one-state solution, with the denial of voting rights to the Arab minority (and possibly soon majority) only a short-term pause on the way to a unitary Muslim-majority state?

Israelis would be rightfully horrified at a pro-Arab US president trying to ram a one-state solution down our throats; we should be equally wary of the same proposal in friendlier wrapping. Something which broadens the smiles of the messianic post-Zionist settler movement is not necessarily something which suits any Israeli national interest. In fact, usually the opposite is the case.

The foreign policy commentariat also needs to ask itself some difficult questions about its role in a conflict talked about so much yet understood so little.

A break with previous policy by a US president on this issue is not unprecedented. Pious talk about norms being broken tends to be reserved only for when the shifts favour Israel, not the other way. President Obama inherited from President Bush a set of commitments to Israel on the outlines of a final status agreement. He entered office refusing to confirm their continued validity and left office eight years later having allowed an extremely one-sided UN Security Council resolution to impose new parameters on future talks that were decidedly not in keeping with previous US policy. President Bush himself inherited from President Clinton a cautious ambiguity about final status issues such as Palestinian statehood and borders, but he nevertheless made a Palestinian state an explicit goal of US policy without securing any parallel concession from the Palestinians. And President Clinton inherited a US insistence on negotiating with Palestinian representatives from the territories, not the PLO. The shifts they made were just as dramatic as Trump’s, without the pious protestations.

The former administration officials clogging the pipes with tweets about decades of international consensus being upended don’t like to be reminded of how they have been at nearly every turn in the peace process. Autonomy was supposed to moderate the Palestinians (“give them something to lose”); it led to an unprecedented wave of suicide terrorism. Elections were supposed to weaken Hamas; they took power. Settlement freezes were supposed to make negotiations easier. Military force to crush the second intifada was supposed to be doomed to fail. The West Bank separation barrier could never work. Assassination of Hamas leaders was supposed to increase suicide bombing rather than eliminate it for nearly a decade so far. Erdogan was supposed to be a model of democratic Islamism that Israel should support as an example. The Jerusalem recognition was supposed to cause the Middle East to erupt.

There is of course much to criticise in today’s proposal. The timing is suspect, the politics are gross and the motives are impure to say the least. The odds of success are tiny, but that’s no different than previous forays. It doesn’t mean that the “experts” get a free pass. And it doesn’t mean that the Israelis and Palestinians can just curl up in their respective narratives of righteousness and victimisation.

Muslim leaders knelt in prayer at Auschwitz-Birkenau in Krakow on Thursday during a visit to the former German Nazi death camp with children of survivors.

The group of 62 Muslims and 25 prominent religious leaders from 28 countries was the most senior delegation of its kind to ever visit the site of a Nazi German death camp, according to organisers.

The tour was led by the American Jewish Committee (AJC), and the Muslim World League (MWL) ahead of the 75th anniversary of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Members of both delegations placed candles at the site’s international monument, erected in 1967 to commemorate the more than 1.1 million victims, most of them Jews, murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Footage widely shared online shows delegates kneeling in prayer next to the monument.

Speaking at the memorial, the MWL’s general secretary Dr. Mohammad bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa said: “To be here, among the children of Holocaust survivors and members of the Jewish and Islamic communities, is both a sacred duty and a profound honour.

“The unconscionable crimes to which we bear witness today are truly crimes against humanity. That is to say, a violation of us all, an affront to all of God’s children.”

ISIS Orders Fighters Worldwide to Invade Israel
(BIN) – A spokesman for the Islamic State (ISIS) ordered his organization’s fighters as well as ISIL supporters to invade Israel and attack Jewish communities reports Walla. The orders were given in an effort to thwart Trump’s “Deal of the Century” that the US and the Israeli government are set to unveil on Tuesday. During a speech on Monday, a spokesman for ISIS head Abu Hamza al-Quraishi, who released a statement for just the second time since being appointed to the post after the assassination of former

BBC stands by Orla Guerin after Holocaust report backlash
Board of Deputies demanded an apology after report on Holocaust Memorial Day referenced Israeli-Palestinian conflict

The BBC has stood by its international correspondent Orla Guerin after she faced criticism for referencing the occupied Palestinian territories in a special report filmed inside Israel’s Holocaust memorial Yad Vashem.

Guerin’s emotional interview with Holocaust survivor Rena Quint in her Jerusalem apartment and at Yad Vashem was broadcast on BBC News at Ten on Wednesday.

“In Yad Vashem’s Hall of Names, images of the dead. Young soldiers troop in to share in the binding tragedy of the Jewish people. The state of Israel is now a regional power. For decades, it has occupied Palestinian territories,” Guerin concludes after interviewing Quint.

“But some here will always see their nation through the prism of persecution and survival,” she adds.

The segment attracted fierce criticism online, with some suggesting Guerin’s comments sought to draw parallels between the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Holocaust.

But a spokesperson for the BBC denied the accusation in a statement.

“The brief reference in our Holocaust report to Israel’s position today did not imply any comparison between the two and nor would we want one to be drawn from our coverage,” the spokesperson said.

The statement came after Board of Deputies vice president Amanda Bowman demanded an apology. “In an otherwise moving report on the experiences of a Holocaust survivor, Orla Guerin’s attempt to link the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to the horrors of the Holocaust was crass and offensive ,” she said in a statement on Thursday.

“As we approach Holocaust Memorial Day, the Jewish community is within its rights to expect an apology,” Bowman added.

Gideon Falter, chief executive of the group Campaign Against Antisemitism, plans to make an official complaint.

“Few could imagine perverting what is supposed to be an educational piece about the Holocaust to instead fuel the very antisemitism that such education is supposed to prevent, but that is what the BBC has done,” he said.

A spokesperson for Ofcom said the broadcasting regulator has not received any complaints about comments made by Guerin on BBC News at Ten on Wednesday.

Prince Charles heralds ‘Israeli geniuses maintaining entire structure of NHS’
After a sombre day dominated by remembrance of the Shoah, Charles met innovators, cultural figures and business leaders from across Israeli society

Prince Charles and Professor Hossam Haick
Prince Charles has hailed the “Israeli geniuses maintaining the entire structure of the NHS” at a reception hosted by the Britain’s ambassador.

The heir to the throne met innovators, cultural figures and business leaders from across Israeli society at the event to which guests were invited “come rain or shine”. In the end, hundreds of guests packed into every corner of the residence’s garden where a specially-erected structure kept guests dry as they clamoured to shake the Royal’s hand.

After a sombre day dominated by remembrance of the Shoah, Charles showed a light touch that delighted the gathering at the end of the final day of his first official tour.

“It’s been fascinating to hear about so many of the cooperative ventures that are taking place between both our countries,” he said. “From what I gather it sounds as though Israeli geniuses are maintaining the entire structure of the NHS, along with a great deal other remarkable technology developments.” A large percentage of medicines used in the NHS originate in Israel, while the Jewish state is also at the cutting edge of medical advances.

He also pointed to the defence and security cooperation between the two countries and said: “I feel a particular closeness not only because I am the same age as the state of Israel – having been born in 1948 – but also the fact my grandmother is buried on the Mount of Olives.”

He drew the biggest applause of the night as he thanked guests for their warm welcome and added: “Thank you for your very kind welcome and it was particularly encouraging to hear one person say that they thought certain things about the British mandate weren’t too bad after all.”

Professor at Technion – Israel Institute of Technology – who specialises in nanotechnology applications in medicine.

Letter sent by Winston Churchill to the Technion in 1958
He had brought a prototype of his Sniff Phone – which analyses a persons breath to detect a range of illnesses.

Professor Haick told Charles, as the engineer and scientist held the device, slightly larger than a mobile phone: “Every disease has a unique finger print of chemicals.

“It analyses breath and detect 17 different types of disease from cancers to neuro-degenerative diseases.”

Another innovative piece of technology shown to the heir to the throne was a machine that produces water from moisture in the air.

Michael Rutman from Watergen, the company behind the water cooler sized device, offered Charles a glass of water from the machine which comes in an industrial version that can be taken to remote areas.

Rutman said: “He liked it, he said it tasted good. This machine can save lives as it can run off solar panels and provide water in communities which don’t have a fresh supply.”

Ambassador Neil Wigan, who welcomed Charles to the reception, spoke of the honour of welcoming HRH so soon after the visit of Prince William. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to Holocaust education including building a new Memorial and learning centre next to Parliament.

Among the guests at the event were Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick, Lord Pickles, who is leading the memorial project with Ed Balls, and the government’s antisemitism adviser Lord Mann along with Board of Deputies president Marie van der Zyl.

Lord Polak, who had previously described the lack of an official Royal visit as a “stain on relations”, said: “This and the visit of Prince William are the culmination of many people pushing for fully normalised relations and that meant a royal visit. This will help cement relations.”

Earlier, Charles was shown round the section of the Israel Museum that house the Dead Sea scrolls.

The Chief Rabbi said: “The Jews are called the people of the book, which is why we preserve these items for all of mankind. Even though the Nazis were responsible for destroying countless other materials the work here is helping this history to live on.”

The Prince of Wales said: “It’s absolutely remarkable these methods of preservation have been upheld and it’s such important work which is just so vital.”

The scrolls were discovered at Qumran, a national park located just 40 miles outside Jerusalem.
The discovery is recognised as the earliest known written examples of the biblical texts.

Documentary-maker behind BBC Panorama on antisemitism is suing Labour

The documentary-maker behind the BBC’s Panorama on Labour antisemitism is suing the Party for libel.

John Ware is taking legal action after the party strongly rejected the allegations made in the film, submitting a 28-page complaint to the broadcaster, which has since been dismissed by Ofcom.

During the documentary Ware spoke to seven former Labour officials from the Party’s Complaints and Disputes department, plus another former staffer.

It alleged top party figures interfered with investigations into antisemitism, singling out the Labour leader’s chief communications adviser Seumas Milne and current general secretary Jennie Formby.

It was confirmed to Jewish News, that libel claims against the Labour Party and various of its outriders have been made by Ware and several whistle-blowers.

Their solicitor Mark Lewis of Patron Law said that “it would not be appropriate to comment at this stage”.

In wake of the film, a Labour spokesman said the party had only been asked by Ware about the allegations at the end of June and provided 50 pages of answers to his questions.

Labour said Ware, who worked for The Sun more than forty years ago, has previously expressed “strong opposition” to Corbyn and his politics.

On the eve of transmission, the party hit back against the BBC, claiming that the programme was “unlikely to meet the BBC’s obligations of fairness, balance and political impartiality,” and that it “shows clear signs of political interference” and “attempts at undue influence in the current [Equality and Human Rights Council] EHRC investigations into our disciplinary and complaints procedures”.

In July 2019, Corbyn claimed there “were many, many inaccuracies in the programme” and that it “adopted a pre-determined position on its own website before it was broadcast.”

This week, Ofcom confirmed that it had received 28 objections, and that it had “assessed complaints from viewers who felt that this programme was factually inaccurate and biased.

“In our view, the programme was duly impartial. As well as highly critical personal testimonies, it included the Labour Party’s response prominently throughout, including in an interview with the Shadow Communities Secretary.”

Jewish Labour Movement berates party's outgoing leader for putting forward Karie Murphy for a move to the Lords

Jeremy Corbyn’s former key aide and chief of staff Karie Murphy has been nominated for a place in the upper house.
Labour sources would not comment on any of the claims reported by the Sunday Times.
The Sunday Times newspaper said that the she, John Bercow and former Deputy Leader Tom Watson appear on an eight-strong list of dissolution honours nominations put forward by the Labour chief, who will quit his post in April after leading the party to two successive general election defeats.

Vetting will begin on the nominations soon, the newspaper said.

A nomination for Ms Murphy could also prove controversial given the inquiry into alleged instances of antisemitism in the Labour Party by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC).

The Jewish Labour Movement tweeted a statement saying Ms Murphy’s nomination was “deeply inappropriate and must be rescinded immediately”.

“Jeremy Corbyn is using his final weeks in office to reward failure,” the group added.

Labour MP, and longstanding critic of Mr Corbyn, Siobhain McDonagh, endorsed a Tweet by the group Hope Not Hate, which stated: “No one who is a subject in the EHRC investigation should be ennobled before the full EHRC report is released.”

Referring to the Tweet, Ms McDonagh said: “A very reasonable view don’t you think?”

Obama explains why he sold out Israel – Thank God he won’t be president again
By Leah Rosenberg - September 12, 2019 54843 0

Obama says it plain and simple. He was never and never will be a friend of Israel. Obama genuinely believes that Israel has no right to determine for itself where it ultimately sees the Land of Israel borders. Obama supports a state for Arabs west of the Jordan River and therefore pressured Israel to succumb to Arab demands. Not one word from Obama about the nature of the Arab leadership west of the Jordan river. Not one word about the strategic threats that this would pose towards the safety of millions of Jews who would live within missile range of a future Arab state.

Arms Support for the State of Israel
The United States has NOT always supported the State of Israel with arms. It began after the Six Day War – not before. For the first 19+ years, the State of Israel procured arms via the French, via the Czechs, and nearly anyone they could buy World War II surplus arms from.

But following the Six Day War, the United States agreed for it’s own national interests to invest in supplying weapons to Israel AND to it’s Arab neighbors in order to have more leverage and control with what happens in the Middle East. Of course, this is also beneficial to weapons manufacturers in the United States. When the State of Israel began to manufacture it’s own aircraft, the Lavi, it was American businessmen, Congressmen, and Senators who bullied Israel into backing down on their own weapons production. The United States supports Israel because it is in their interest. Obama knew that he could not defeat Congress on the arms package issue. So, he allowed that to go through, but radically softened the United States stance against Iran instead. So, he weakened Israel by strengthening their enemies instead.
He was no friend and should always be remembered as a hostile President to the best friend and ally of the United States.

Israel: Iran to Go Full Nuclear by December
By Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz January 15, 2020 , 1:53 pm
” When the righteous become great the people rejoice, But when the wicked dominate the people groan.” Proverbs 29:2 (The Israel Bible™)

IDF intelligence reported that Iran will have enough uranium for a nuclear warhead by the end of year but President Trump is leading a multinational effort to prevent this from happening.

An article published in Haaretz on Tuesday reported that Israeli military intelligence estimated that by the end of the calendar year,  Iran will have 40 kilograms of 90% enriched uranium; enough needed to produce a single nuclear bomb. But the same IDF report notes that Iran is still two years away from developing a missile capable of delivering a nuclear payload.

Last week, President Trump challenged this timeline when, in the midst of confrontations with Iran, he stated simply, “As long as I am President of the United States, Iran will never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon.” The president criticized the Iran deal set in place by his predecessor as enabling, rather than curtailing, Iran’s nuclear aspirations and its “destructive and destabilizing behavior in the Middle East and beyond.”

President Trump has been a maverick, breaking from the pack of world leaders in rejecting the Iran deal. Former President Barack Obama implemented the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), known commonly as the Iran nuclear deal, in 2015. The agreement lifted long-standing economic sanctions against Iran in exchange for a shift in Iran’s nuclear program, delaying its production of a nuclear weapon for ten years.

Known as the P5+1, it included the participation of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council—China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, United States—plus Germany together with the European Union. The agreement was criticized for containing inadequate measures for verifying Iranian compliance. The JCPOA required Iran to cease its program for intercontinental ballistic missiles which Iran refused to do, claiming its ICBMs were for defensive purposes.

In May 2018, President Trump announced the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA. 13 months later, Iran announced its uranium had exceeded limits set by the agreement.

Ten days ago, in the aftermath of the Baghdad Airport Airstrike that targeted and killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, Iran declared that it would no longer abide by the limitations of the deal.

The bond between the U.S. and Israel was highlighted on Tuesday when Prime Minister Netanyahu echoed Trump’s vow.

“We know exactly what is happening with the Iranian nuclear program. Iran thinks it can achieve nuclear weapons. I reiterate: Israel will not allow Iran to achieve nuclear weapons. I also call on all Western countries to impose snapback sanctions at the UN now.”

Trump had another supporter in newly elected British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

“From the American perspective, it’s a flawed deal… plus it was negotiated by President Obama,” the Johnson said to the press on Tuesday. “Let’s replace it with the Trump deal. That’s what we need to see. President Trump is a great dealmaker by his own account, and by many others. Let’s work together to replace the JCPOA and get the Trump deal instead.”

In fact, the JCPOA does seem to be crumbling. The foreign ministers of the U.K., France, and Germany announced Tuesday that they are lodging a formal complaint that Iran is not meeting its commitments.

“Our three countries are not joining a campaign to implement maximum pressure against Iran,” the diplomats explained in a joint statement released Tuesday, explaining that their hope was to retain the agreement. “Our hope is to bring Iran back into full compliance with its commitments under the JCPOA.”

‘The Jews of Iran are in grave peril’
Iranian-born broadcaster Rani Amrani of Israel’s Farsi-language RadioRan explains why the Jewish community in Iran, one of the oldest in the Middle East, is “sitting on a powder keg.”

The first thing the Jews of Iran did Friday before last, when they heard the astonishing news that commander of the Revolutionary Guards Corps’ elite Quds Force Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani had been killed in a US airstrike, was issue sharp condemnations of the American act.

"God will avenge his blood," a message from the Jewish community said.

Follow Israel Hayom on Facebook and Twitter

At the start of last week, representatives of the community arrived at Soleimanis’ home to pay their condolences to his family, and took part in his funeral. Those present included Chief Rabbi of Tehran Yehuda Gerami, who even condemned the killing in an interview to state television. We can only guess how afraid the community was that the nation would vent its fury against them.

The Iranian Jewish community is one of the oldest in the world. Legend has it that the Jews arrived in then-Persia after the destruction of the First Temple. Prior to the Islamic Revolution in 1979, some 80,000 Jews lived in Iran, but after the ayatollahs took power most of them left for Israel and the US. Today, the Jewish community in Iran is estimated to number some 8,000, most of whom live in the biggest cities, such as Shiraz and Tehran.

"As far as religion goes, they enjoy freedom – more or less – because the Muslims cannot reject Judaism, which is mentioned in the Quran. So they can celebrate [Jewish] holidays and keep kosher and go to synagogue," explains Rani Amrani, the director of Israel’s Farsi-language RadioRan, who made aliyah from Iran years ago. Amrani maintains close ties to Iranian Jews and non-Jews.

According to Amrani, one of the best ways for the Jewish community to ensure things stay quiet and they stay safe is to throw off any hints of Zionism.

"They are trying to distinguish between Judaism and Zionism to avoid being targeted," Amrani says.

Even messaging apps are risky
Every few years, rare footage of Jewish activity in Iran is made public, usually around the holidays. Last Sukkot, Jewish BDS activist Ariel Gold documented the traditional prayers. Of course, her visit was approved by the Iranian regime. The goal? To prove that Iran has no quarrel with Judaism, only with Zionism. Rabbi Gerami’s Facebook page also shows recent prayers and rites, including the song "Maoz Tzur" sung in both Hebrew and Farsi.

Rani Amrani of Israel's RadioRan, which many Iranians and Iranian expatriates listen to for news that is not filtered through the ayatollah regime (Miriam Tzachi)
Amrani says that in the past, he has reached out to Iranian Jews via the Whatsapp messaging app, but that any contact of that type comprises a clear risk.

"They are very afraid because they could easily be accused of spying. I have regular listeners and every synagogue knows my radio station, but their situation is very delicate. If a Muslim speaks with Israel it’s a problem – if a Jew does, he’ll be suspected of spying. So we are talking about them [Iranian Jews] less now so we won’t drag them into anything. Their lives are truly in danger," he says.

Radio Ran is currently the only Israeli radio station that broadcasts in Farsi, and many residents and former residents of Iran tune in for updates on the world that are not filtered through the extremist regime.

In the past, there were Iranian Jews who somehow made it to Israel, particularly to take part in family celebrations. But it was dangerous.

"if a Jew was caught going to Israel, he would have to serve five years in prison. I know Iranian Jews who came [to Israel] and returned, but two of them were caught and given long prison sentences," Amrani says.

Now things are even more tenuous. The strike on Soleimani upended everything and strengthened Iran’s opposition to the US, and as a result, to Israel. The days after the hit saw a spike in Google searches in Farsi for "revenge," and Jews in Iran are afraid for their lives.

"The Jewish community is very afraid after the strike that Muslims will point a finger at them and see Jews as a target. ‘If the Jews killed Soleimani,’ they’ll say, ‘we’ll kill the Jews here.’ So the Jewish community rushed to put out a message mourning Soleimani’s death, and members paid condolence visits. I would do the same if I were in their place," Amrani explains.

'The state isn't helping'
Repeated attempts to contact Jews in Iran for this article were thwarted, and even new immigrants to Israel from Iran refused to be interviewed, apparently for fear of endangering their relatives in Iran. Amrani says that he is speaking to Iranians who support the regime, and has noticed a rise in anti-Semitic claims.

"They say that the Jews killed Soleimani. Some are even threatening, ‘We’ll do thus and such to the Jews.’ In my opinion, the Jews in Iran are living on a powder keg that could blow at any moment. They are in grave danger," Amrani says.

"If there is a war between Iran and Israel, or Iran and the US, they’ll be the first to be taken hostage and they’ll lose everything they have. That’s what happened after the Islamic Revolution – they hanged and killed all the wealthy Jews in order to seize their property, and that could happen now, too," he warns.

Despite the danger, the Jews in Iran aren’t fleeing, and the economic sanctions are part of the reason. The low value of Iranian currency has made the wealthiest Iranians worth about what an average wage earner in the Israel makes, if not below that.

"There are two reasons why the Jews are staying in Iran – they’re either too rich or too poor to leave. The Iranian currency is worth so little that even a person who owns two homes, won’t be able to buy a single room here [in Israel]. The rich are making a simple calculation – there, they live like kings, and here they would live like a typical person, at best. Why would they do that? Meanwhile, the poor will find it difficult to start their lives fresh in Israel at age 40 or 50. The state doesn’t help Jews from Iran like it once did. Someone who arrives in Israel can’t do anything with the money he gets as part of the new immigrant’s package," Amrani says.

"I talked to some of my family [there] and asked them what they were doing there – they should get up and come to Israel. Their answer was, ‘I have a home and a business here, and if I seel them I can’t even buy a room in Israel.’ They have no choice – they’re staying."

Canadian PM: Ukrainian plane shot down due to 'regional escalation'
Justin Trudeau says 57 Canadians killed when Iran shot down Ukrainian plane would be alive if not for recent escalations in tensions.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday that the 57 Canadians killed when Iran shot down Ukrainian International Airlines Flight 752 last week would be alive if not for recent escalations in tensions in the region.
“If there were no tensions, if there was no escalation recently in the region, those Canadians would be right now home with their families,” Trudeau said in an interview with Global News.

“This is something that happens when you have conflict and war. Innocents bear the brunt of it and it is a reminder why all of us need to work so hard on de-escalation, moving forward to reduce tensions and find a pathway that doesn’t involve further conflict and killing,” he added.

Iran initially denied having anything to do with the crash, but US officials said early on that the plane had been shot down by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.

On Saturday, Iran finally admitted that it had made a mistake and shot the Ukrainian plane after it flew too close to a sensitive military site and failed to respond to signals.

The crash came shortly after Iran fired ballistic missiles at two bases in Iraq that house US forces in retaliation for the US eliminating top Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.

Trudeau has faced repeated questions over the past week on whether he believes US President Donald Trump also bears some responsibility for the incident due to the fact that it came just hours after the missile strikes by Iran.

In Monday’s interview, Trudeau said he spoke with Trump about the incident.

“I have spoken to him and I have talked about the need to de-escalate tensions,” he said. “I’ve talked about the tremendous grief and loss that Canadians are feeling, and the need for clear answers on how this happened and how we’re going to make sure it never happens again.”

He added, however, the focus for him and the Canadian government right now remains on the victims, even as it could be “weeks, perhaps even months” before the victims are repatriated for burial.

“The grief they’re going through is not to be consoled right now. They want answers, they’ve expressed anger and outrage and also immeasurable pain,” he told Global News.

“I am hurt like all Canadians. I am angry like all Canadians. But unlike many people I have a job to do that will be able to help these families directly. Getting answers for them is my entire focus right now.”

His comments come ahead of a meeting being hosted by Canada on Thursday in London, in which members of the International Coordination and Response Group are set to lay out their next steps for pushing for credible answers and access to black box data.

Trudeau said the goal of the meeting will be looking at ways to demand justice.

“I think full admission, acknowledgment of responsibility and some form of compensation is going to have to come,” he said.

Gazan reunites with Jewish mother after 30 years

Intermarriage between Jews and Arabs in Israel is rare. However, it does exist. Sometimes it exists under duress. This story of a family reunited after 30 years is truly riveting.

The Arab population in Israel is actually much more heterogeneous than many people realize. There are hundreds of thousands of Arabs who live in Israel who are actually very happy with their place in the Middle East. They understand well that they have it good in Israel. They have nationalized medical care with excellent Jewish and Arab doctors who work harmoniously. They have excellent roads and public transportation in the bulk of the country. And, yes, they travel rather freely throughout the country also.

But, since there are a few hundred thousand troublemakers – or terrorist supporters – who cause so many of the problems, that is what people associate Arabs in Israel with. But the truth is so often so much more complex than what people paint it as.

The upcoming decades may indeed see more radicalization of Muslims in Europe and the United States. But the State of Israel is poised to have a more complex relationship with it’s Arab population. The right plan of action is one that props up the more reasonable and peace-oriented population and more aggressively punishes the Arab population that causes trouble. Ultimately, Israel is headed towards a bright future that will include the Arabs who cooperate and will not include those who don’t.

'This Will Never, Ever Be a Benghazi': Trump Responds Forcefully After US Embassy Attack in Iraq

Marines fired tear gas to disperse pro-Iran protesters who surrounded the US embassy compound in Iraq for a second day.

US Defense Secretary Mark Esper announced that an infantry battalion of about 750 soldiers has been authorized to deploy to the Middle East after hundreds of Shiite militiamen and protesters attempted to storm the embassy Tuesday. The protesters trashed a reception area and smashed windows in one of the worst attacks on a US diplomatic mission in years.

From his Mar-a-Lago resort, President Trump blamed Iran for the attack and praised the US military for responding quickly.

"I think it's been handled very well," said Trump. "The Marines came in. As soon as we saw there was potential for problem, they got in and there was no problem whatsoever."

The president was also adamant that the incident would not be a repeat of the 2012 Benghazi attack in Libya that left four Americans dead under President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

"As you know, this will not be a Benghazi," he said. "Benghazi should never have happened. This will never, ever be a Benghazi."

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) praised President Trump's response.

The protestors are raging against deadly US airstrikes in Iraq and Syria that reportedly killed 25 members of an Iranian-backed militia over the weekend. Those strikes were made in retaliation for a militia attack that killed a US contractor last Friday at an Iraqi army base.

Militias in Iraq, backed by Iran, have launched numerous rocket attacks on bases housing US forces amid growing tensions in the region between the US and Iran.

By early evening Tuesday, the protestors had retreated from the compound but set up tents outside where they planned a sit-in. American Apache helicopters flew overhead, dropping flares as a show of force, warning protestors to back off after they had chanted "death to America" and "death to Israel."

Meanwhile, a State Department spokesperson says there are no plans to evacuate the embassy.

12 public figures that defended Israel in 2019
As we look back at 2019, CUFI UK has compiled a list of 12 public figures/personalities that took a bold stand for Israel and/or the Jewish people during the year (In reverse order, with 1 being our top figure for 2019). From politicians to celebrities, they showed courage in the face of opposition, made public declarations or actions in support of Israel and against anti-Semitism, and in some cases have faced the consequences of refusing to back down.
Let us remember that whilst these 12 people all have a public profile, all of us have an important role in standing with Israel and the Jewish people and this list cannot truly represent the many unsung heroes who have stood in the gap this year for Zion’s sake.

Education Ministry to open schools in Jerusalem's Arab areas, replacing those of UNRWA

The Jerusalem Municipal Council approved Tuesday night a plan to construct an educational campus for Education Ministry schools near the city's Arab Shuafat and Anata neighborhoods.

These schools will be an alternative to the UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency) schools which currently dominate the area.

The project will cost 7.1 million NIS ($2,055,617), and will be located in an area outside the pre-1967 borders but within Jerusalem's municipal borders.

Jerusalem Council Member Aryeh King thanked Mayor Moshe Lion for advancing the project, which will lessen UNRWA's influence in the city.

"We're not talking, we're acting," King wrote on Facebook. "While the previous mayor, Nir Barkat, published press releases for years about his plans to reduce UNWRA's influence and involvement in eastern Jerusalem, the current mayor, Moshe Lion, passed last night a decision of unprecedented importance. I salute you, Mayor."

Previously, it was revealed that UNRWA, which has clear terror ties, has been responsible since 1965 for 20,000 "refugees" who have full Israeli citizenship and receive National Health Insurance payments, free health care, and other services provided to Israeli citizens. They also receive services from the Jerusalem municipality, since they are residents of the city.

As part of its activities in Jerusalem, UNRWA operates several clinics, as well as schools - which use textbooks that do not mention Israel even once. All of their schools and clinics operated without Israeli licenses.

Prepaid Rav Kavs can be used in Judea and Samaria

Beginning Wednesday, Israeli citizens living in Judea and Samaria will be able to use load money onto their Rav Kav cards and for use on buses in Judea and Samaria.

Transportation Minister Bezalel Smotrich (National Union) began receiving requests for the change immediately upon entering office.

The new policy allows Israelis traveling on bus lines in Judea and Samaria to pay for their trips in one of two ways: Cash at the regular price, or "loading" money onto a Rav Kav card ahead of or at the beginning of the trip, which entitles the traveler to the standard "prepaid" discount.

"In recent months, we have worked together with the Transportation Ministry's Public Transportation Authority to provide a solution that will allow the use of prepaid Rav Kavs on bus lines in Judea and Samaria," Smotrich said.

"The ability to load a Rav Kavs is the most basic product the Transportation Ministry gives those who use public transportation. We were not willing to allow a situation in which residents of Judea and Samaria were 'illegitimate children.' Right now, the Ministry is working in order to bring about a significant improvement in the public transportation services in Judea and Samaria."

Knifeman stabs five at rabbi’s New York home during Chanukah celebration
BY JEWISH NEWS REPORTER

A knifeman attacked a Chanukah celebration at a rabbi’s home north of New York City late on Saturday, stabbing and injuring five people before fleeing in a vehicle, police said.

The attack appeared to be the latest in a string targeting Jews in the region, including a massacre at a kosher grocery store in New Jersey earlier this month.

Police said the stabbings happened at around 10pm in Monsey, one of several Hudson Valley towns that have seen an influx in large numbers of Chasidic Jews in recent years.

Ramapo Police Chief Brad Weidel said hours later that New York City police had located a vehicle and possible suspect. Sky News later reported that one suspect had been arrested.

Top state officials, including Governor Andrew Cuomo and Attorney General Leticia James, released statements condemning the attack.

Photos and videos posted on Twitter showed a large emergency response with paramedics running and pushing stretchers. A number of police and emergency vehicles could be seen in the images.

The Anti-Defamation League of New York and New Jersey says it was also aware of the reports and was at the scene in Monsey.

Monsey is about an hour north of New York City.

The Board of Deputies of British Jews said: “We are outraged by this latest attack on Jewish people, celebrating Chanukah at home. We pray for the swift recovery of all the victims. There must be zero tolerance for acts of hate. ”

The Community Security Trust, which is responsible for securing the UK Jewish community said: “This was a terrible attack on a place of worship and our thoughts and prayers are with the injured and their families. It is another distressing reminder of why the security we have in the Jewish community is so necessary.”

The Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council for the Hudson Valley region tweeted reports that the stabbings took place at the house of a Chasidic rabbi while they were celebrating Canukah.

Several state and local officials described the location of the stabbing as a synagogue. The rabbi’s home is next door to a synagogue.

Saturday was the seventh night of Canukah.

Governor Cuomo, who called the stabbings a “cowardly act”, has directed the State Police hate crimes task force to investigate the attacks.

“Let me be clear: antisemitism and bigotry of any kind are repugnant to our values of inclusion and diversity and we have absolutely zero tolerance for such acts of hate,” he said.

“In New York we will always stand up and say with one voice to anyone who wishes to divide and spread fear: you do not represent New York and your actions will not go unpunished.”

Police chief Mr Weidel said the five people were taken to hospital for treatment, but the extent of their injuries was not clear.

Authorities have not provided a motive for the attack.

The incident happened a month after a man needed surgery after being stabbed while walking to a synagogue in Monsey.

Jewish communities in the New York City metro area have been troubled following a deadly gun rampage at a northern New Jersey kosher market on December 10.

Six people died in the shooting, including the two killers, a police officer and three people who had been inside the store. New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal said the attack was driven by hatred of Jews and law enforcement.

Around New York City, police have received at least six reports this week – and eight since December 13 – of attacks possibly prompted by anti-Jewish sentiment.
Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Friday that the police presence would be increased in Brooklyn neighbourhoods with large Jewish populations.

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry condemned Israeli visits to the Temple Mount on Wednesday, referring to them as "ongoing Israeli violations against the Al-Aqsa Mosque", according to Jordan's official news agency.
Dhaif Allah Al Fayez, the ministry spokesman, called the visits a provocation to Muslims around the world and a violation of Israel's obligations as the ruler of responsible for overseeing the holy site. The Jordanian news agency mentioned a recent visit by an unnamed Israeli member of Knesset to the Temple Mount. Likud MK Sharren Haskel visited the Temple Mount recently, according to her spokesperson.

According to Temple Mount News, former MK Moshe Feiglin visited the Temple Mount with his son last week.

Al Fayez called for an end to the visits and for Israel to respect the status quo, stressing that the Temple Mount was a place of worship for Muslims only.

Director of the al-Aqsa Mosque Omar Kiswani said that Israel is trying to take advantage of the Jewish holidays to increase the frequency of Jewish visits to the Temple Mount, according to the Paletinian WAFA news.
Kiswani called on Arab and Muslim countries to defend the mosque and stand with the Waqf to protect the mosque.
The Jerusalem Post recently revealed that Jewish visitors to the site have started praying undisturbed by police forces. As of the end of December, police officers continued to allow Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount, according to Jewish visitors to the site.

Netanyahu to deliver victory speech in Likud race

Over the Sukkot holiday and intermediate days, over 1,657 Jewish Israelis visited the Temple Mount, according to former MK Yehuda Glick.
Jews are prohibited from praying or bringing religious items onto the Temple Mount – and are removed and sometimes detained if caught doing so.
The Waqf, an arm of the Jordanian Ministry of Sacred Properties, administers the Temple Mount site. Visits by religious Jews to the site are monitored by Waqf guards and Israeli police – and all Jewish prayer, including silent prayer, is forbidden, according to the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs. No sacred Jewish objects, such as prayer books or prayer shawls, may be brought onto the mount, according to the tourism website Tourist Israel.
The Temple Mount is open to Jewish entry Sunday to Thursday from 7:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. (10:30 a.m. in the winter) and again from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.
In October, the Palestinian Safa news agency reported that there has been a "marked escalation" in the frequency of visits by Israeli Jews and "extremist calls to storm [Al-Aqsa] during the Jewish holidays amid tight restrictions imposed by the occupation authorities on the Palestinians."
Tensions have been high between Israel and Jordan in recent months, especially surrounding issues such as the Temple Mount, Jordanian citizens arrested in Israel, the arrest of an Israeli citizen in Jordan, and the return of agricultural land to Jordan in Naharayim and Tzofar.

In October, Jordanian House of Representatives member and president of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union Atef Tarawneh warned that the peace treaty between Israel and Jordan is "under threat, in light of the blatant violation of its terms, especially with the issue of Jerusalem," according to Jordan's government news agency.

Jeremy Sharon contributed to this report.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu wins landslide victory in Likud primary
Long-serving leader gets much-needed boost ahead of third election in less than a year, as he battles allegations of corruption and bribery

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has scored a landslide victory in a primary race for leadership of the ruling Likud party, giving the embattled leader a boost ahead of the country’s third election in less than a year.

The strong showing by Israel’s longest-serving leader could give him another opportunity to form a government following the March election, after falling short in two previous attempts this year.

By easily fending off Likud legislator Gideon Saar, he also kept alive his hopes of winning immunity from prosecution after being indicted last month on a series of corruption charges.

“A giant victory,” Mr Netanyahu tweeted early on Friday, just over an hour after polls closed.

“Thanks to the members of Likud for the trust, support and love,” he added. “God willing, I will lead Likud to a big victory in the coming elections.”

In a tweet, Mr Saar congratulated him and said he would support the prime minister in the national election. “I am absolutely comfortable with my decision to run,” he added. “Whoever isn’t ready to take a risk for the path he believes in will never win.”

Official results released by Likud showed Mr Netanyahu capturing 41,792 votes, or 72%, compared with 15,885 votes, or 28%, for Mr Saar.

While removing any doubts about Mr Netanyahu’s standing in the ruling party, the primary is likely to prolong Israel’s political uncertainty. He will remain at the helm of Likud until the March elections, and his lingering legal troubles could again scuttle efforts to form a government after that.

In September’s election, Likud and its main rival, the centrist Blue and White party, were unable to secure a parliamentary majority and form a government on their own.

The two parties together captured a solid majority of parliamentary seats, leaving a national unity government as the best way out of the crisis, but Blue and White has refused to sit in a partnership with Mr Netanyahu when he is under indictment.

Opinion polls predict a similar outcome in the March election, raising the possibility of months of continued paralysis. The country already has been run by a caretaker government for the past year.

Mr Netanyahu, who has led the country for the past decade, maintained his position on the political right by cultivating an image as a veteran statesman with close ties to US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and other world leaders.

His refusal to make any concessions to the Palestinians was rewarded after Mr Trump took office, as the US began openly siding with Israel on several key issues.

His hardline approach to Iran has also proved popular. He was a staunch opponent of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which has unravelled since Mr Trump withdrew from the agreement.

A wave of Israeli strikes on Iran-linked targets in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq has burnished Mr Netanyahu’s claims to have protected Israel from its enemies.

His fortunes have nevertheless waned over the past year, after he was unable to form a government following the unprecedented back-to-back elections in March and September. His party came in second place in September, leading many observers to view the vote as the beginning of the end.

In November, he was indicted on charges of fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes, the culmination of three long-running corruption investigations. He vowed to remain in office, dismissing the indictment as an “attempted coup” by hostile media and law enforcement.

Judith Kerr’s The Tiger Who Came To Tea ‘was always about fun, not Nazis’

For readers of any age, Judith Kerr’s beloved tale, The Tiger Who Came To Tea, presents a curious, if not tantalising puzzle that has lasted more than 50 years.

In short, a little girl named Sophie sits down to enjoy afternoon tea and cake with her mother when there’s a sudden ring at the door. Sophie’s mummy says, “I wonder who that can be…?”

Never could the pair have imagined it would be a large tiger, or a tea-guzzling tiger, who steps inside and literally eats every last crumb of food and drinks every last drop of drink the family possess. And then he abruptly leaves.

Years ago, children’s author Michael Rosen attempted to unravel the thread of this surprising tale by suggesting the tiger reflects Kerr’s experiences as a young child in Nazi Germany – but it was an assertion the writer herself always denied.

Writer and illustrator Kerr, also best known for her Mog series and her semi-autobiographical, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, did however say the story about a tiger was simply just that – with all the joy and wonderment of having a tiger turning up unannounced at your house conjures up in a child’s imagination.

It was from that starting point that Ruth Fielding, producer and joint managing director of Lupus Films, approached Kerr and her publisher at Harper Collins to turn the book into a hand-drawn animation that stays faithful to the original story and illustrations – resulting in an enchanting 30-minute film set to air on 24 December, on Channel 4.

Kerr sadly passed away aged 95 earlier this year, but was involved in the entire process of producing the film, from adding comments on the script to helping choose the star-studded cast, which includes Friday Night Dinner actress Tamsin Greig as Mummy, Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch  as Daddy and Selma actor David Oyelowo as Tiger.

They are joined by David Walliams as the narrator, Paul Whitehouse as the milkman and seven-year-old actress Clara Ross as Sophie.

Speaking about taking on the task of adapting one of Kerr’s most-loved books, which has charmed generations of readers since it was first published in 1968, Fielding says she felt “huge responsibility, but huge joy”.

She tells me: “The burden of responsibility is huge, but we weren’t worried because we had Judith’s help. She was involved right from the very beginning. She was involved in the script, she saw the design, was involved in choosing the cast – and even the lyrics for the song. We knew her views across the whole process.”

As for interpreting the meaning of the book, Fielding, who recalls repeatedly borrowing The Tiger Who Came To Tea from her local library as a young child herself, says she only looked to Kerr’s own explanation on this, having come up with the idea to entertain her young daughter, Tacy.

The Tiger Who Came To Tea stays true to the story and illustrations of Judith Kerr’s book

THE PRODUCERS REVEALED THE DETAILED ANIMATION WOULD HAVE TAKEN ONE PERSON 22.5 YEARS TO COMPLETE
“Judith was very clear when she wrote it that she was home looking after a four-year-old girl and as such, you have to use all the power of imagination to entertain a young child. It’s about turning lemons into lemonade, being happy entertaining a little girl and imagining what might happen if a tiger came to tea.”

Director Robin Shaw equally reveals that he “didn’t have any interpretation of the book.”

“[The Tiger] is enough of a character not to have to read anything else into him. He just turns up, waltzes in, cheeky, but charming. He’s one of those people you admire, but also feel abused by at the same time, someone who can get what he wants without even having to ask for it, or try hard for it. You don’t need to put some deeper meaning into it – it’s just fun.”

Staying true to Kerr’s original intentions, the animation vivaciously bounces along thanks to the energetic, Henry Mancini-inspired music from composer David Arnold, including the standout song, Hey Tiger, co-written with lyricist Don Black and voiced by Robbie Williams.

The sumptuous hand-drawn animation – which would have taken one person 22.5 years to complete – are also in keeping with Kerr’s illustrations in the book, down to the white space framing the scenes.

Clara Ross, who plays Sophie and Robbie Williams, who provides the vocals for the song, Hey Tiger
Even the obvious anachronisms – such as the baker’s boy, the milk man and the 1960s fashions – are left untouched, even for today’s child who might be unfamiliar with such things.

“Although there are certain things very much of their time in the book and the film, the things that are most important in there are timeless,” says Shaw.

“You have a child’s imagination, a giant tiger and this relationship between Sophie and her mum, so there’s a lot for us to recognise and relate to, no matter what age you are.”

The Tiger Who Came To Tea airs on Channel 4 on Tuesday, 24 December at 7.30pm and is repeated on Wednesday, 25 December at 1.50pm

The new Conservative government will make it illegal for public bodies to boycott Israel.

The policy was unveiled on Thursday in the “most radical Queen’s Speech in a generation”, which also included measures to toughen up criminal justice, invest in the NHS and deliver on the “people’s priorities”.

Speaking in the Commons, Johnson said: “One innovation that this Queen’s Speech introduces, is that we will stop public bodies from taking it upon themselves to boycott goods from other countries, to develop their own pseudo foreign policy against countries, which with nauseating frequency turns out to be Israel.”

Lord Dubs ‘bitterly disappointed and angry’ at scrapping of child refugee pledge
Labour peer who fled the Nazis as a boy said he is ‘absolutely shocked’ by Boris Johnson’s move, accusing the government of ‘turning their backs’ on the most vulnerable.   Lord Alf Dubs said he is “bitterly disappointed and angry” after Boris Johnson appeared to scrap his amendment supporting child refugees.

The Labour peer who came to Britain on the Kindertransport told Jewish News he is “absolutely shocked” by the move, accusing the government of “turning their backs” on the most vulnerable.

This comes after British Jews criticised the decision to “tear up” a pledge to negotiate a deal allowing refugee children in Europe with UK family to come to Britain after Brexit.
The revised wording of the Brexit Bill, due to be put before MPs on Friday, removes a Government commitment to strike a deal with the European Union so child refugees can be reunited with their family in the UK, even after free movement ends.

The terms – pushed for by Lord Alf Dubs, who fled the Nazis as a boy – had been accepted by Theresa May when she was in Number 10 but her successor Boris Johnson looks to have watered down the commitment to simply requiring a minister to “make a statement” to Parliament.
The change has been made in Clause 37 of the European Union (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill, stating that a minister will “make a single statement to Parliament within two months” of it passing to explain progress on the arrangements for child refugees seeking their families in the UK.

Board urges Tories to ‘avoid making same mistakes’ as Labour over Islamophobia
Conservatives launch probe into discrimination after PM Boris Johnson apologised during the Election campaign for "all the hurt and offence" to the Muslim community

The Conservatives have been urged to “avoid making the same mistakes” as Labour by British Jews, as the party conducts its review into racism.

The president of the Board of Deputies made the appeal after it was announced the Tories will conduct a review into handling of complaints of discrimination and prejudice – including Islamophobia.

The move comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson apologised during the General Election campaign for “all the hurt and offence” that had been caused to the Muslim community by Islamophobia within the party.

His party was accused by the Muslim Council of Britain of “denial, dismissal and deceit” when it came to hate towards Muslims – with Johnson personally accused of writing an offensive opinion piece which referred to Muslim women wearing face veils as ‘letterboxes’.

While the Conservatives have been charged with being soft on Islamophobia, under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn, Labour was repeatedly accused of failing to tackle antisemitism.

Chief Rabbi Mirvis launched an unprecedented attack a week before the election, accusing Corbyn of being “complicit in prejudice”, and that his inaction was a “new poison – sanctioned from the very top” of the party.

Speaking on Wednesday, Marie van der Zyl, President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, said: “As the Conservatives embark on an inquiry designed to strengthen its approach to racism – particularly including Islamophobia – and reassure British Muslims and other communities about its approach, it must avoid making the same mistakes as the Labour Party over antisemitism.”

She urged the party to ask “difficult questions and show a willingness to change”, but added that in the Board’s dealing with the Tories over incidents of antisemitism “we have found it to be responsive and swift. But it seems that other minority groups have not all had the same experience and this should be addressed. “

During the election campaign, three Conservative candidates were investigated over claims of antisemitism – with Lee Anderson taking the seat of Ashfield and Sally-Ann Hart being successful in Hastings & Rye, as their party swept to a historic win nationwide.

I want to start with an apology.

I’m sorry my political party, the Labour Party, has let down the Jewish community so catastrophically in recent years.  I’m sorry that so many Jewish voters felt betrayed at the General Election by a party they used to think was on their side and their political home.

And I’m sorry that despite constant efforts by me and others to put pressure on Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour leadership, the poison of anti-Semitism was allowed to take root.

The post-mortem about why Labour lost the election in such a devastating fashion is now in full swing, with many different theories. But we know one thing with absolute clarity: Labour failed to deal with anti-Semitism and failed the Jewish community.

I’ve been a member of the Labour Party since I was 15 years old.  A big part of why I first joined was because I saw Labour as the best vehicle to break down barriers of discrimination and to stop the racism I witnessed, and often experienced myself, growing up.

I’ve always been proud, for example, that in the Battle of Cable Street of 1936 it was Labour members, as well as trade unionists and others, who bravely stood with Jewish Londoners against fascism.  For me, this represents what Labour is all about – standing up for the oppressed, for minorities, and trying to create a fairer society for everyone, regardless of race and religion.

So I find it utterly shameful and heart-breaking that, rather than being an ally and defending the Jewish community, Labour has come to be seen as the exact opposite – a threat.

Labour must now fundamentally change and seek to gain the trust of the Jewish community once again, however long it takes.  We have a moral duty to ensure we never again go into an election with a community feeling excluded and threatened. We must make the Labour Party a hostile environment for anti-Semites, rather than one where they can thrive.

As Mayor, I’ll continue to stand up for Jewish Londoners.  And as a Labour politician, I will do everything I can to ensure the next Labour leader immediately acts to deal with anti-Semitism, and brings an end to this appalling chapter in Labour’s history.

It’s official – Prince Charles will travel to Israel next month in the second Royal visit in two years, Clarence House said on Wednesday.

Both the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall will attend events related to the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, joining other world leaders such as the presidents of Russia and France.

Charles will travel to Israel to meet both Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, then on to the West Bank to meet Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, after attending the World Holocaust Forum at Yad Vashem on 23 January at Rivlin’s invitation.

Meanwhile, on International Holocaust Remembrance Day on 27 January, the Duchess will attend commemorations in Poland at the site of the former death camp, meeting survivors.

Confirmation this week followed a period of intense speculation, when officials tight-lipped despite clearly brimming with excitement.

Britain’s new Ambassador to Israel Neil Wigan had already joked that his tenure would be deemed a failure if he did not secure a second Royal visit, after the popularity of Prince William’s visit last year.

Reacting to the news this week, Wigan said he was “delighted” that Charles accepted Rivlin’s invitation, adding: “Prince Charles has visited Israel twice in the past, and I am pleased that this time he will get to see a bit more of Israel.”

Dr. Moshe Kantor, President of the World Holocaust Forum, said: “It is a great honour for us that Prince Charles will be attending the Fifth World Holocaust Forum in Jerusalem in January,”

“Prince Charles is a figure of strong moral authority and has long been recognised as a leading voice against intolerance, hate and antisemitism.”

“That Prince Charles has chosen to attend our unprecedented conference on Holocaust remembrance and against antisemitism on his first official visit to Israel speaks volumes.”

The heir to the throne visited Jerusalem in 2016 and 1995, to attend the funerals of President Shimon and Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin respectively, but this visit will be his first programme of engagements in Israel or the Palestinian territories.

Royal observers say it is no surprise that Charles and Camilla accepted the official invite to represent the UK next month, given their record on Holocaust commemoration and education.

In 2015, Charles marked 70 years since the camp’s liberation in London, in 2016 Camilla visited the Holocaust Survivors Centre in London, and in 2017 Charles became patron of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, hosting a reception at St James’s Palace for survivors.

Later that year the couple visited the Jewish Museum in Vienna and in 2018 Charles attended a reception to mark the 80th anniversary of the Kindertransport, where he met members of the Association of Jewish Refugees.
