A former youth worker who once accompanied a group of working-class East End teenagers to Buckingham Palace to meet the Duke of Edinburgh has praised his award programme for “changing their lives”.

Joan Salter, from north London, said Philip was “charming and not at all snobby” when he spent time with her group of six girls from Tower Hamlets, who were invited to the palace in the early 1970s in recognition of achieving their Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award.

The programme was launched in the UK in 1956 and has resulted in millions of children taking part in after-school activities and residential weekends away.

Mrs Salter, 81, was summoned to the palace with her group of 16 and 17-year-olds, following a week-long expedition to Wales to achieve the award’s highest certification.

She told the PA news agency: “He was a very, very handsome man, that was true.

“He was so, so friendly, he really took care of the girls and he really, genuinely appreciated what they had done.

“Tower Hamlets at the time was a very poor area, and a lot of them had never even got a bus out of Tower Hamlets, so part of youth service was broadening their horizons and the Duke of Edinburgh Award was absolutely fantastic for that.

Joan Salter taken in the early 1970’s. The former youth worker who once accompanied a group of working-class East End teenagers to Buckingham Palace to meet the Duke of Edinburgh has praised his award programme for “changing their lives”.
“The impression of the royal family is of an elitist group of people, however, all I can say is there was absolutely no snobbishness about Philip.

“I know he has a reputation for being grumpy, but maybe some of the people he was grumpy at deserved it.

“He just was so interested that the girls had achieved it. It really opened doors for a lot of kids.

“He talked to the kids, he was genuinely interested and I think he was almost amazed at what the girls had achieved.

“Their parents were sat behind them and were ready to burst with pride.”

Mrs Salter said the duke spent several hours meeting Duke of Edinburgh’s Award recipients from across the country, chatting with them individually about their expeditions and presenting them with medals.

“None (of the children in her group) would have gone to Buckingham Palace in those days from that sort of background,” she said.

“A lot of them had not even gone up to the West End to the shop or a theatre, it was just outside their world.

“The award scheme opened up their world beyond their expectations and aspirations they might have had.”

Mrs Salter, a Polish Jew who was awarded an MBE for Holocaust education in 2018, added: “Obviously he didn’t organise the scheme on his own, but without him facilitating it a lot of people’s lives wouldn’t be what they are today.”

Why you can trust Sky News
Buckingham Palace has revealed the 30 guests who will be attending Prince Philip's funeral at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, on Saturday.

Coronavirus restrictions mean the ceremony has had to be scaled down, with only 30 guests allowed in contrast with the estimated 800 originally planned to attend.

The shortened guest list includes many of the Duke of Edinburgh's closest relatives but his great-grandchildren - including Prince George and Princess Charlotte - will not be there as they were likely thought too young for the televised proceedings.

The funeral will take place on Saturday at 3pm following the duke's death last Friday and will be preceded by a national one-minute silence.

Those leading the procession include Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.

Here is the full list of all the attendees:

The Queen

Her Majesty and Prince Philip
His partner of more than 70 years, there was no doubt the Queen would attend the funeral.

She had famously once described him as her "strength and stay" and many have commented on the closeness of their relationship and the special bond they shared.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall

Charles and Camilla were seen looking at tributes outside Buckingham Palace on Thursday in their first public appearance together since the duke's death.

The prince paid tribute to his "dear Papa" at the weekend, saying he was a "very special person".

Princess Anne and Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence

Princess Anne and Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence
The Princess Royal was extremely close to her father and had shared a love of sailing with him.

Following his death, she shared a moving statement saying she was not ready for his passing and described him as "my teacher, my supporter and my critic".

She will be joined at the funeral by her husband Sir Timothy Laurence, a retired Royal Navy officer.

Prince Andrew

Although he has largely stepped out of the spotlight, the Duke of York did speak to reporters following his father's death.

He said the Queen had described the loss as leaving a "huge void" in her life.

Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex

The Earl and Countess of Wessex, with their daughter Lady Louise Windsor, at the chapel
The Queen and Prince Philip's youngest son Edward will eventually inherit the title of the Duke of Edinburgh under plans first announced in 1999.

Joining his family members in paying tribute, the Earl of Wessex said his father had the "unique ability to make a lasting impression in a remarkably short time".

"I, like all my family, have a lifetime of lasting impressions, inspiration, shared passions and love," he said.

His wife, Sophie, has shared a close relationship with the Queen and tearfully told Sky News outside Windsor Castle that the monarch has "been amazing" since Prince Philip's death.

Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge

William and Kate will travel more than 1,000 miles on their train journey around the UK
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will also be in attendance, although they will travel separately.

Prince William, the future heir, will be part of the procession bringing the duke's body to St George's Chapel.

His wife, Kate, will depart from Windsor Castle.

Prince Harry

The Duke of Sussex has already travelled to the UK from his home in California and is in quarantine ahead of the funeral.

He is able to attend due to a loophole in the travel restrictions which mean foreign arrivals can break their self-isolation to attend the funeral of a close family member.

It's the first time he has returned to the UK since Harry and Meghan's bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, in which they made allegations about their treatment by members of the Royal Family.

Harry's pregnant wife Meghan has not flown over for the funeral on the medical advice of her doctor.

Peter Phillips

He is Princess Anne's oldest child, and his father is Anne's first husband, Captain Mark Phillips.

As Captain Phillips did not have a royal title, Mr Phillips was not given a royal title at birth.

Peter has largely been under the radar although has a very close relationship with the Queen.

Zara and Mike Tindall

The princess is Prince Andrew's oldest daughter.

In an interview in 2016 for ITV documentary Our Queen At Ninety, Princess Beatrice had become emotional as she described the "magical moments" she had had with her grandfather, Prince Philip.

She will be joined at the funeral by her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, who she married last year.

The younger daughter of Prince Andrew, Eugenie will be at the proceedings alongside her husband Jack Brooksbank.

In a heartfelt tribute to her grandfather on Instagram, Princess Eugenie said he had taught her "how to cook, how to paint, what to read" and she would also remember him fondly for his sense of humour.

"I remember incinerating the sausages and you swooping in to save the day," she wrote.

She added that she will look after "Granny" for him.

The Queen, who decided the guestlist for the funeral, will likely have wanted her sibling's children there as a source of comfort.

The Earl of Snowdon

Viscount Linley arrives at St. Mary's Church in Hillington, Norfolk, for the morning church service.
David Armstrong-Jones is also a child of Princess Margaret's and the Queen's nephew.

He is also close to the Queen and became the 2nd Earl of Snowdon following the death of his father, Antony Armstrong-Jones, in 2017.

Bernhard, Hereditary Prince of Baden, is a German nobleman and a great-nephew of Prince Philip.

He is among three of the duke's German relatives who were reportedly flown to the UK over the weekend and are isolating at a home in Ascot, according to The Mirror.

Prince Philip himself was German through his mother's side and this part of his family was always close to the duke's heart.
