Synod votes to back "military force" to create safe route for refugees
The Church of England has voted to back a motion on the refugee crisis which the Archbishop of Canterbury warned meant it must back military action to give refugees a safe route.
Wed 25 Nov 2015
By Antony Bushfield
The Church of England has voted to back a motion on the refugee crisis which the Archbishop of Canterbury warned meant it must back military action to give refugees a safe route.

General Synod members backed a proposal by the Bishop of Durham, Rt Revd Paul Butler, which calls upon the government to work with international partners to establish safe routes for refugees.
Before a vote on the issue Justin Welby warned it meant support for military action and that the Church must put its money where it puts its mouth.
Archbishop Justin said: "I think we need to recognise though... the motion essentially commits us to supporting the use of armed forces overseas.

"The reality of working in those areas to create safe ways of routes to places of safety must include some kind of forceful response.
"It is almost impossible to see how it could be done otherwise."
Bishop Paul accepted that but stressed the backing for military action only applied to providing a safe route for refugees.
He said it was "likely that some [military action] will be needed" to provide routes to places of safety for asylum seekers.
The motion also urges diocese to work closely with local authorities to provide resources for the resettlement of refugees who arrive in the UK.
A bid by Very Revd Andrew Nunn to remove the word 'welcome' and replace it with 'acknowledge' in a paragraph which speaks about the government's promise to take 20,000 refugees between now and 2020, was rejected by Synod.
Part of the motion also suggested the government should ensure vulnerable Christians facing persecution for their faith should have this taken into account when officials decide who should be offered asylum.
Proposing the motion, Bishop Paul said: "The compassion which compels us to help the refugee will be blind to differences of creed as to colour or any other characteristic.
"For all that, it is right that we uphold the right of our fellow Christians to fair treatment.
"Whether or not they are in refugee camps, easy or hard to find, they must suffer no discrimination as UNHCR seeks out those in greatest need of resettlement.
"Those whose suffering is exacerbated by religiously motivated persecution deserve to have that factor given full weight in the calculation of need."

Justin Welby: Don't approach Synod as a place of suspicion and conflict
The Archbishop of Canterbury has warned members of the General Synod not to approach the meeting as a place of 'suspicion and conflict'.
Tue 24 Nov 2015
By Antony Bushfield
The Archbishop of Canterbury has warned members of the General Synod not to approach the meeting as a place of 'suspicion and conflict'.

Most Revd Justin Welby used his presidential address to tell members he had two main fears for the Synod.
"If I might begin with the worst," he said, "one of my fears is that we approach this Synod as a place of suspicion and conflict."
He added: "To use Pope Francis' phrase, we cannot come together in a 'hermeneutic of conspiracy'.
"Many of you will remember the performance of Kenneth Williams in 'carry on cleo', in which as he faces his murderes, he cries out 'infamy, infamy, they've all got it in for me'."
The archbishop said the system of Synod suggested one side must win and the other lose.
This was not the case, he said: "If any lose, we all lose. If any win, we all win".
But he said the Church must not be ashamed that it has its "arguments in public".
"It is healthy and good," he said.
He told members there was still an interest in what the Church does despite those who "assert the lack of relevance of the Church of England".
Archbishop Justin cited the Church's discussions on sexuality as a successful way Christians were able to discuss a controversial issue in a respectful way but he accepted the next five years of Synod offered 'enormous challenges to the future of the Church'.
The events in Paris, in which 130 people died in an Islamic State terror attack, meant the Church could not turn in on itself: "We will not likely ever be forgiven if this Synod turns inwards," Archbishop Justin said.
The attacks did not mean a "war against Islam" he stressed, adding that Christianity too had extremists.
"The task is to overwhelm extremism not by other extremes but with hope and love," he said.

The Archbishop ended his address by telling members he hoped they could look back in five years time as "people who have built together, who have listened and heard, and although not agreed, have done our best to be faithful to Jesus Christ".

Cinema's refusal to show The Lord's Prayer has "chilling effect" on free speech
The Church of England has blasted the decision of the country's top cinema chains to reject an advert featuring The Lord's Prayer.
New website JustPray.uk, which is run by the Church, had wanted to show a 60 second advert of The Lord's Prayer before films across England.

Odeon, Cineworld and Vue, which control 80% of cinema screens around the country, have refused to show the advert because they believe it "carries the risk of upsetting, or offending, audiences".

The Church had produced an advert promoting the new website to be shown in cinemas from December 18 2015 as part of the ad reel before Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

It's branded the decision "plain silly" and says it has a "chilling effect" on free speech and is considering taking legal action under the Equality Act which bans commercial organisations from refusing services on religious grounds.

The Bishop of Chelmsford told Premier the Church had been told the advert would be fine and was even offered a discount on the fee.

"The cinemas really at the last minute for some reason best known to themselves got cold feet," said Rt Revd Stephen Cottrell.

Christian convert attacked in Bradford

Christian Legal Centre client Nissar Hussain has been violently attacked outside his home in Bradford. Nissar, who has helped to promote Christian Concern's Safe Haven initiative, was beaten with a pickaxe handle by two men while on the way to his car. Nissar and his wife converted to Christianity in 1996 and have since experienced intimidation and violence from the Muslim community. Please pray for Nissar, who is in hospital with a broken hand and kneecap.

Nissar, a hospital nurse, has been attacked and threatened ever since his family converted from Islam to Christianity in 1996.
When he first went to the police for protection after a threat by Muslims to burn down his house if he did not return to Islam, he was told to “stop being a crusader and move”.
Threats
Members of the local Pakistani community where Nissar and his wife, Qubra, live, have vandalised their home, set fire to their car and subjected the family to verbal abuse and even death threats.

On one occasion the couple and their five children, all aged under 10, were woken in the night to find an unoccupied house next door on fire. On another occasion a young man threatened Nissar directly, saying if he did not return to Islam, his house would be burned down.
Ten years after his conversion to Christianity, Nissar and his family moved to another part of the city to escape the barrage of abuse.
“They told me categorically had I been in an Islamic country, like Pakistan or the Middle East, that they would actually be the first to chop off my head. They called me a ‘Christian Jew dog’.

Preacher to appeal 'censorship of Bible'

Supported by the Christian Legal Centre, street preacher Mike Overd is to appeal his conviction for a public order offence. In March, a judge said that Mike was wrong to reference Leviticus 20, but could have used Leviticus 18 instead! "This is an important case. The judge cannot decide which parts of the Bible can and can't be preached," Andrea commented. Please pray for Mike and the Christian Legal Centre team as they prepare for the appeal hearing on 11 December.

"Broken families will never forget the 13th of November" says Paris priest
A priest in Paris says the families of victims of the Paris attacks are "broken" as a result of these acts of terror.
Sat 14 Nov 2015
By Hannah Tooley
A priest in Paris says the families of victims of the Paris attacks are "broken" as a result of these acts of terror.

Father Aiden Troy, of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in central Paris, was speaking after Islamic State claimed responsibilty for the six coordinated terror attacks in the French capital.
Father Aiden told Premier that: "I've got so much admiration for the police, the fire service, the emergency services who last night you can imagine going into a theatre will a few hundred hostages being held."
He told Premier that: "Even this morning... there are families still trying to find out what happened in a restaurant, what happened at the Stad du France - and that is the sad part of it, the dead are with God in rest, but there are so many broken families this morning who will never forget the 13th of November."

Pope and Archbishop of Canterbury say prayers after more than 140 dead in Paris attacks
Prayers as death toll rises in Paris attacks
Prayers are being said all over the world for Paris, following a series of attacks on the French capital on Friday evening.

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks that began on Friday evening, more than 128 people are feared dead.

Eight extremists have been killed, including seven in suicide bombings.

200 people are thought to be injured.
A manhunt is under way for accomplices of gunmen as French president Francois Hollande pledged to wage a "merciless" fight against terrorism.

David Cameron will chair a meeting of the Government's Cobra emergency committee on Saturday morning.
Pope Francis has condemned the killings in Paris as "mad terrorist violence" and has called for a response to counter the spread of "homicidal hatred".

A spokesman for the Vatican said it condemns the attacks "in the most radical way".

Prince Charles has added his voice to the prayers.

The Prince of Wales is sending a message of support to President Francois Hollande expressing his support for Parisians who have endured a night of devastating terrorist attacks.

A Clarence House spokeswoman said: "Their Royal Highnesses are carrying on with engagements in Albany and Perth today."

Charles turns 67 today.

A state of emergency has been declared after two suicide attacks and a bombing near the Stade de France stadium, shootings at restaurants and a massacre inside a popular music venue in what is the worst violence to hit France since the Second World War.

Officers stormed the Bataclan concert hall where hostages were being held but attackers, wearing suicide belts, blew themselves up, leaving more than 100 people dead.

The national football side was playing a friendly match against Germany at the Stade de France when two suicide attacks and a bombing took place nearby.

President Hollande had been at the stadium but was evacuated.

Tens of thousands of people fell silent at the stadium on Friday night in tribute to those killed and injured.

The first attack is thought to have begun around 10pm French time.

A prayer has been released on Godspace to grieve with those in the French capital:

"Lord we grieve with the people of Paris.

We grieve,

for the lives lost in senseless violence.

Our tears are shed

for those who have been wounded.

Our hearts ache

for those who are consumed by hate.

Lord have mercy,

Christ have mercy,

Lord have mercy.

Lord give wisdom,

to those who must make decisions.

Lord give your strength,

to those who seek to protect.

Lord give guidance,

to those who must respond.

Lord have mercy,

Christ have mercy,

Lord have mercy."

Six locations in Paris were targeted in these series of attacks.

Confessions of a former Satanist
To conclude series one of the Street Evangelism blog, we're featuring a special edition testimony of a former Satanist named Danny Mcilhiney. At the age of 15, Danny was a committed atheist and was already very heavily involved with with the occult, satanism and communism. Find out how his life was turned around after a chance meeting on his local high street.
AN 'UNORTHODOX' UPBRINGING
I was brought up in a family that was very firmly atheist. My family made it clear from a young age that belief in a supreme being was the folly of the idiot or those on the lower echelons of society. We were intellectual and therefore did not hold to any belief other than those based in 'science'. My family were however, Jewish by race and so we did partake in some Jewish holidays and festivals, yet it was enforced that these were nearly cultural exercises and nothing more. My grandmother was a Jewish communist and so I was also instilled with socialist principles from a very young age. In fact at a young age I can remember going on Anti-War marches and even telling teachers that I was communist, laughing at those who subscribed to the Christian faith.
Despite this, since I can remember, I had a keen interest in politics, philosophy and religion. I can remember forcing my parents to take me to synagogue at around age nine, not for religious purposes, but again for a sense of heritage. On my tenth birthday I asked for a Kippah (a Jewish head covering), so as to have my own.

Are there any circumstances where it’s okay to have an affair?
Rebecca De Saintonge, author of controversial memoir ‘One Yellow Door’, recounts how her late husband, a vicar, took nearly 10 years to die from the brain disorder, Lewy body dementia. Whilst acting as her husband's full-time carer, she says it was an extramarital relationship that saved her and gave her the strength to carry on caring for him.
The late comedian Robin Williams' wife, Susan Schneider, revealed that the actor killed himself because he was suffering from the same debilitating brain disorder.
What would you say to a friend who was in this position? .

Sir Cliff Richard voluntarily interviewed by police
Fri 06 Nov 2015
By Hannah Tooley
Sir Cliff Richard has been interviewed by police after voluntarily meeting officers, according to a spokesperson for the star.
He was interviewed under caution last year by detectives investigating a claim of a sex crime involving a young boy in the 1980s - he was not arrested or charged.

The 75-year-old singer said in a statement that the claims against him were ''absurd and untrue'' and he had ''never, in my life, assaulted anyone''.
A spokesperson for the Christian entertainer said the singer spoke to officers this week: "Sir Cliff Richard voluntarily met with and was interviewed by members of South Yorkshire Police.

"He was not arrested or charged, nor has he ever been
"He co-operated fully with officers and answered the questions put to him.
"Other than restating that the allegations are completely false and that he will continue to co-operate fully with the police, it would not be appropriate for Sir Cliff to say anything further at this time."
Earlier in 2015 South Yorkshire Police chief constable David Crompton said that the investigation into the entertainer had ''increased significantly in size'' and involved ''more than one allegation''.
Mr Crompton commented that the ''expanding nature'' of the investigation meant he could not give a final date when the investigation would be concluded.
He said the force was in regular contact with Sir Cliff's lawyers in a letter to Keith Vaz, chairman of the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee.
However Sir Cliff's lawyers have criticised the committee for publishing the letter, says its disclosure had caused him a ''further round of unnecessary and extremely damaging media coverage''.
The publication of the letter in February came after an independent report into an agreement between South Yorkshire Police and the BBC which led to a raid on the singer's home being broadcast live around the world.
The inquiry found that the deal ''certainly interfered with his privacy and may well have caused unnecessary distress," and former chief constable Andy Trotter said police should never have a made a deal with the broadcaster.
It has been reported that a Metropolitan Police investigation into the leak to the BBC had been unable to find the source.
The Christian entertainer converted to faith in 1964 and has created chart-topping singles across five separate decades.

Thousands of homes built in refugee camp for Christian victims of Boko Haram
Fri 06 Nov 2015
By Antony Bushfield
Christians who have fled Nigerian terror group Boko Haram are being offered a temporary house at a new refugee camp in the country.
The new site will feature 2,500 properties and is being built in Nigeria's north-eastern city of Maiduguri.
The camp - another sign that few expect the conflict to end soon - will house refugees occupying public schools, allowing classes to resume, hopefully next month, officials said.
Hundreds of thousands of children have not been to school for more than 18 months in Maiduguri and elsewhere in north-east Nigeria, where authorities closed all schools as they were targeted by the Islamic insurgents.

Plane crash will have wider effects in Egypt, warns Christian Lord
Fri 06 Nov 2015
By Hannah Tooley
A Christian Lord has warned that the impact of Saturday's plane crash could have more than a negative effect on Egypt's tourism industry.
British and American officials say that it was possible that a bomb on board a flight on Saturday brought down the Russian Airbus A321-200.
It crashed 23 minutes after take-off from the Sinai resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, killing all 224 people on board.
Lord Alton of Liverpool, Vice Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Egypt told Premier that if the county's second largest industry is damaged then: "Funds are not going into Egypt, then the more likely those people will be susceptible to the enticements of terrorist organisations like ISIS, who exploit grievance, poverty and destitution.
"So these things all play into one another.
"And although I personally believe that the Egyptian president is trying to make real progress on things like human rights and political freedoms, which are the essential foundations for long term stability, he also has to build up long-term hope in the country otherwise these people will fall into the hands of ISIS."

Christian children 'more selfish'
Fri 06 Nov 2015
By Premier Journalist
Children raised in Christian or Muslim homes are more selfish than those brought up athiest or agnostic, a study claims.

The research, published in the journal Current Biology, also suggests the effect is worse the more often they go to church or mosque.
The study is based on an exercise carried out by more than 1,100 children aged 5-12 around the world.
In it, they were given stickers and asked how many of them they would wish to share with an anonymous person in their school.
The lead author of the study, Dr Jean Decety from the University of Chicago, said it was carried out to test the common view that those with a religious upbringing were 'better' people.
"This view is so deeply embedded that individuals who are not religious can be considered morally suspect, especially in the US."
Dr Decety also has a theory about why children from Christian and Muslim backgrounds appeared less likely to want to share.
It is based on what is known as 'moral licensing'.
"Moral licensing is using something 'good' to justify something 'bad', often without even realising it.

Presidential candidate Ben Carson: Pyramids built by Bible's Joseph
Fri 06 Nov 2015
By Antony Bushfield
Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson is standing by his belief that Egypt's great pyramids were built by the biblical figure Joseph to store grain.
But experts say it is accepted science that they were tombs for pharaohs.
Mr Carson is a retired surgeon who has unexpectedly risen to the top of the Republican primary race in some polls.
Video posted online on Wednesday by Buzzfeed News shows Mr Carson explaining his theory 17 years ago at a Michigan college affiliated with his Seventh-day Adventist Church.
In the video, Mr Carson says: "My own personal theory is that Joseph built the pyramids in order to store grain."

He was referring to the Old Testament story of Joseph predicting famine and advising the pharaoh to store surplus food.
Mr Carson said that is more likely than the accepted archaeological conclusion that the massive structures were built as tombs for pharaohs.
At a book signing on Thursday in Florida, Mr Carson stood by his statement.
"Some people believe in the Bible like I do and don't find that to be silly at all, and believe that God created the Earth and don't find that to be silly at all," Mr Carson said.
"The secular progressives try to ridicule it every time it comes up and they're welcome to do that."
Calling the grain theory his "personal belief", Mr Carson said, "I happen to believe a lot of things that you might not believe because I believe in the Bible."

Christian MP expects Russian "retribution" if plane bomb confirmed
Thu 05 Nov 2015
By Marcus Jones
A Christian MP's told Premier we can expect to see "retribution" from Russia if it's proved a bomb was behind last week's plane crash in Egypt.

Sir Gerald Howarth, who's also the Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Egypt has been speaking as all UK flights to and from Sharm el-Sheikh remain grounded as a precaution - leaving thousands of people stranded in the resort.
Last week a plane belonging to a Russian owned airline went down with all 224 people on board killed.
Metrojet bosses said the disaster could not have been caused by human or technical error and was the result of an "impact".
Some have suggested that an Islamic State affiliate may be responsible.
Speaking about the decision to stop UK flights, David Cameron said: "We cannot be certain that the Russian airliner was brought down by a terrorist bomb but because it's a strong possibility it is right to act."

RT Kendall: How I was saved from liberalism
By: RT Kendall | Nov 2015
RT Kendall writes about the moment that changed his ministry for good

On October 31st 1955 I had the greatest spiritual experience of my life. Driving in my car from Palmer, Tennessee (where I was pastor) to Trevecca Nazarene College in Nashville (where I was a student) I had what I might call a 'Damascus Road' experience. As I drove there appeared the Lord Jesus Christ at my right – interceding for me to the Father. I never felt so loved. But I could not tell what Jesus was saying, only that he was putting His whole authority on the line with the Father in my behalf. I burst into tears as I drove – on old U. S. 41 between Monteagle and Manchester, Tennessee.
Two Scriptures had come to my mind as I was praying: 1 Peter 5:7 ('Casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you') and Matthew 11:30 ('My yoke is easy, and my burden is light'). Before the vision of Jesus appeared I was laboring in prayer, asking the Lord to enable me to cast all my care upon Him so I could say that my yoke was 'easy'. I had felt a deep burden on me to pray. Normally I would play the radio all the way on a trip from Palmer to Nashville but that morning I wanted only to pray.
The next thing I remember – over an hour later – was hearing Jesus say clearly to the Father, 'he wants it'. The Father replied, 'he can have it'. In that very moment there came a peace into my heart – with warmth – that is impossible to explain. It was not merely the absence of anxiety but the presence of rest in my soul. A moment later I saw the face of Jesus looking at me. This lasted for less than a minute. Then I was at Trevecca and went to my first class at 8:00 am.
What happened to me that day? What was 'it'? I heard Jesus say, 'he wants it' and the reply came back, 'he can have it?' Over the last sixty years I have asked what was – what is – 'it'?
I have come up with several answers: peace – that’s for sure. The 'it' was peace. I immediately connected it at the time to the 'rest' described in Hebrews 4:9-10. The 'it' was certainly 'full assurance' (Gr. plerophoria) of my salvation. I knew beyond any doubt that I was eternally saved. The 'it' was the earnest of my inheritance. It was surely the baptism of the Holy Spirit (although I did not speak in tongues at that time). When I get to Heaven I will inquire further what 'it' is!
The person of Jesus was so real to me
The calm peaceful presence in my heart transformed me. Things did not bother me. What people said about me had minimal effect on me. I did not get easily upset. The person of Jesus was so real to me.

A month later I had my first vision. Among other things, it indicated I would have a wide ministry but outside my old denomination. Three months later as I was driving from Kentucky into the Tennessee border I felt a well inside that wanted to come out; the only way to let it out was to utter unintelligible sounds. I did it. I kept this to myself; speaking in tongues is more offensive to Nazarenes than Calvinism. I told only two or three people over the following twenty years, one of whom was Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones. He affirmed to me that what happened was real.
But there was more. My theology changed immediately after that experience of October 31, 1955. I knew I could not lose my salvation. Before the day was over I was acutely aware of the sovereignty of God. This led me to believe in predestination. For a while I wondered if I was the first since the Apostle Paul to experience anything like this!
The Bible began to speak to me as it never had

I attended an online church, here’s what happened
Nov 2015
Everyday Church, a London based UK church has launched an experimental ‘online congregation’. Could this be the future? Sam Hailes logged on to see what church in the digital age might look like

The countdown video begins, the music is turned up loud and I’m getting ready to worship God. But I’m not in London’s latest megachurch. I’m sitting in the comfort of my own home, on the sofa. Church has gone digital, and the ramifications are significant: It’s now possible to attend church in your underpants.
Everyday Church (which has ‘real life’ congregations in Wimbledon, Kingston and Southfields) launched its online-only congregation in September. Participants visit everyday.online at 4.30pm or 6pm on a Sunday, and join in with the service.
What happens during the service?
Unlike some churches who livestream their services, Everyday have chosen to pre-record all their content. The online church pastor welcomes you to the church through a pre-recorded video message. Everyday church’s worship band then play songs – again you’re watching a pre-recorded video. And then a sermon is given, which needless to say, is pre-recorded.
Is anything live?
The chatroom is live and open throughout the service. You can talk to other people in real time about what you’re watching (like real life church, you can talk during the sermon). Hosts are on hand to type a warm welcome to you and answer any questions you have.

Canon Jeremy Pemberton loses tribunal claim the Church discriminated against him for being in gay marriage
Canon Jeremy Pemberton, who claimed he was discriminated against by the Church of England after he was refused a job for being in a gay marriage, has lost his tribunal.
Premier can reveal Nottingham Employment Tribunal has dismissed all claims made by the vicar.
It ruled that "the constitutional convention means that the State cannot impose same sex marriage upon the Church".
Canon Pemberton has told Premier his lawyers were preparing grounds for appeal.
He married Laurence Cunnington last April but had his right to officiate removed by the then acting Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham Richard Inwood following the wedding.
The clergyman then had a job offer as a chaplain for Sherwood Forest Hospitals Trust withdrawn, which he claims was caused by the Church of England discriminating against him because of his sexual orientation.

A Christian charity has welcomed the Medical Tribunal Service's decision to ban a doctor who admitted offering an abortion because the baby was a girl.
CARE's speaking after the Service banned Dr Palaniappan Rajmohan for three months, after he was caught on secret camera saying "it's like female infanticide, isn't it?" and offering to put the mother's age as the reason for the abortion, rather than the baby's gender.
Dr Rajmohan was working in the private Calthorpe Clinic in Birmingham when the film was made.
The Medical Tribunal Service said during the hearing: "You must have realised at the time that your actions would be considered as dishonest by the ordinary standards of reasonable and honest members of the medical profession.
"The panel has determined it is in the public interest to suspend your registration with immediate effect in order to maintain public confidence in the profession."

Government has no plans to ban or restrict 'gay cure' therapy
The Government has told Premier it has "no current plans to ban or restrict" therapies that claim to help gay people become straight. A spokesperson said whilst the Government was "strongly opposed" to the treatment, it did not believe a ban or restriction was the right answer.
On Tuesday, Conservative MP Mike Freer secured a debate in Westminster Hall to call for "gay conversion therapies" to be outlawed.
The debate came after Education Secretary Nicky Morgan said the treatment, given to gay people to help them get rid of same sex attraction, should be banned.
Premier has been told the Government believes a ban would be "complex" because it would prevent lesbians, gay men and bisexual people from seeking counselling or therapy because they are distressed about an aspect of their sexuality.
The Department of Health acknowledged that supporting people through aspects of their lives that are difficult or challenging is a large part of what therapists do.
A spokesperson said: "We do not believe that being lesbian, gay or bisexual is an illness to be treated or cured.
"We strongly oppose so-called gay to straight 'conversion' therapy and continue to welcome and support the work of the counselling and therapy bodies to eradicate this practice."

Law should 'protect not limit' free speech

Philosopher Roger Scruton has criticised legislation based on the notion of "stirring up hatred." In a BBC article, he says that the government should not "criminalise opinions that give offence but protect those who express them", saying that free speech is essential to tackling tensions in society. "The orthodox liberal view is that homosexuality is innate and guiltless ... Deviate in the smallest matter from the orthodoxy, and you will be accused of homophobia", he notes.

In a speech at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, he also warned that the government's approach threatens freedom of speech. During questions, he said: "The danger is that we say ‘Ok well we've banned that lot, therefore we will ban this lot.’"

Huge rise in child 'transgender' referrals
The number of children seeking medical treatment for 'gender confusion' has risen five-fold in five years, according to an NHS clinic. The Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust is the only clinic in the UK that provides such treatment. It says referrals have risen from 139 in 2010 to 697 in 2014. One doctor at the clinic has previously said that children as young as nine should be given puberty-blocking drugs. This week. Andrew Marsh discussed the issue on Sky News and Premier radio.

Christian prison worker 'forced to quit' for sharing Bible

A Christian prison worker who claims he was forced to resign after being harassed for sharing the Bible at work is taking his case to an employment tribunal.
Ordained Pentecostal minister Revd Barry Trayhorn alleges he suffered an "unfair and aggressive disciplinary process" for talking about the Bible's teaching on sexual behaviour and homosexuality during a service at HMP Littlehey, a prison for sex offenders.
In May 2014 Mr Trayhorn says he spoke of the forgiveness that God offers to those who repent, quoting Bible verses from 1 Corinthians chapter 6.

Vicar of Baghdad Canon Andrew White calls for war and ground troops to defeat Islamic State

He said he thought there had to be a war to defeat the terrorists who had advanced over large parts of Iraq and Syria killing tens of thousands of Christians.

'Little evidence' faith-based charities using work to evangelise
Mon 02 Nov 2015
By Antony Bushfield
A study has found 'little evidence' to suggest that faith based charities are using their work to try and bring people to Jesus.
The report by Theos, a religion and society think tank, suggests many Christian charities give aid and help to poorer people but make no attempt to evangelise.
Researchers carried out more than 20 interviews with faith-based organisations in sectors like drug rehabilitation, housing, debt advice and education, as well as those who commission services, and found none of the agencies used charitable activity as a way of converting people.

Mob murders Ugandan Christian woman
Sat 31 Oct 2015
By Aaron James
A mob has murdered a Ugandan Christian woman after attempting to murder her husband as well.
According to Morning Star News, the group entered the home of Mamwikomba Mwanika in Kalampete village, in the eastern Kibuku District, declaring their intention to murder her husband George.
George Mwanika had been debating with Islamic scholars and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with Muslim locals.
When Mamwikomba said George was not present, she was dragged from her house and murdered around 100 metres away. Two of her daughters, aged 9 and 11, were in the house when events occurred.

Report finds sharing faith turns most people off Jesus
New data from a joint study by major Christian organisations has revealed sharing your faith with others may not always be an effective way to bring them to Jesus.
The 'Talking Jesus' report was compiled by the Church of England, Evangelical Alliance and Hope Together.
It found that when non-Christians were told about Jesus or Christianity, they were three times more likely to put off than brought closer to them.
Specifically, 59% were made to feel more negatively about Jesus or Christianity, compared to just 19% who felt more positively about them.
The report has been sent to every member of the Church of England's General Synod before it holds its second bi-annual meeting in November.
There is anticipation as to how the General Synod will respond to the findings, and what advice it will give to Christians in terms of evangelism.

Thu 29 Oct 2015
By Antony Bushfield
The United Kingdom has become the first country in the world to allow children to be born with the DNA of three parents after new regulations came into force.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology (Mitochondrial Donation) Bill was passed by Parliament earlier this year in a bid to stop some inherited diseases.
Government ministers had argued letting a child have the DNA of two women and one man could prevent Mitochondrial Disease being inherited.
The mitochondrial donation is aimed at stopping serious inherited diseases that can be devastating to a person's life and cause early death.
Research suggests the technique could help almost 2,500 women in the UK have children.
But the Church had criticised the move at the time saying it had "serious ethical objections".
It was passed in a House of Commons free vote by 382 votes for and 127 against.
Despite the law now being passed Dr Trevor Stammers, a Christian and expert in bioethics, told Premier many scientists are still concerned.
He said it had "never been tried before" and that "many scientists are very concerned because they fear it may not work".
Mr Stammers added: "When scientists get an idea their enthusiasm sometimes exceeds their wisdom.
"We must be very cautious. I hope that it does work, but I am extremely sceptical."
Andrea Williams, chief executive of Christian Concern, said the new law was "playing God" and " undermining the very pattern for family and human dignity that God has given to us."
She added: "Even judged by the UK's generally cavalier approach to bioethics, this is a huge ethical and safety line to cross.
"Countless human embryos will be destroyed in the development of these techniques and once they are deployed, we will be embarking on a mass genetic experiment on future generations, without consent.
"There is no way of accurately predicting the consequences, but future generations will be forced to endure them.
"No wonder that, for so many in the international scientific community, this is a line that shouldn't be crossed."

Christian charity concerned over rise in transgender treatment for children
There's been a five-fold increase in the number of children seeking medical help for problems with gender identity since 2010. There were almost 700 referrals to the UK's only clinic for transgender children in 2014, up from 139 in 2010.
Christian Concern has told Premier it has serious worries about the increase in children as young as 10 being offered drugs to halt puberty so they can fully transition to a different gender.
Andrew Marsh from the organisation said on the News Hour: "Children aren't able to drive until their 17, we can't vote until we're 18 and yet we are suggesting that children aged, perhaps 10, are able to make a decision to embark on a course that has huge consequences and significance and life changing implications".
Alex, 15 who was born a boy but is taking medication that pauses puberty and hopes to fully transition to being female, told Sky News: "I've been on (hormone) blockers for 12 to 13 months.
"I was (worried) so much before I took my blockers that my voice would break or I'd develop really masculine features - it wasn't healthy."

Priest claims gay people's lives made "hell" by the Catholic Church
Wed 28 Oct 2015
By Antony Bushfield
The Catholic Church is making the lives of gay people a "hell", a priest who was sacked for coming out as homosexual has claimed.

Krzysztof Charamsa said the priesthood was "full of homosexuals" and accused the Vatican of being hypocritical for banning gay clergy.
He was sacked from his senior post in Rome in early October after he revealed his sexuality at a press conference the day before a Church meeting on the family.
Now Mr Charamsa has published a letter he sent to Pope Francis on the same day.
It said the Church was "persecuting" and causing "immeasurable suffering" to gay people and their families.
The letter, sent to the BBC by the priest, also said he had to "publicly reject the violence of the Church towards homosexual, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual and intersexual people" after a "long and tormented period of discernment and prayer".

Christian rapper Faith Child has been named Best Gospel Act at the MOBO awards.

The London-based Hip-Hop star beat off competition from Leroy Johnson, Ni-cola, Olaedo Ibe and Chos3n to pick up the prize at the pre-awards show on Tuesday night.
The full awards show takes place in Leeds next week.

"I performed then twenty minutes later I received my award so a lot of things happened in the same moment of time. It was a fantastic moment."
His award comes just weeks after he was made a deacon in his church.
"October has been an amazing month for me. Ordained as a deacon, won this MOBO.
"In the past five weeks I've been up for five awards. There's so much happening. I just thank God for that."

Dad killed in Canada boat tragedy was a "committed Christian in constant awe at the wonders of God's creation"
A father killed when a whale-watching boat sank off the coast of Canada was a "committed Christian". David Thomas, 50, and his 17-year-old son Stephen were among five Britons who died after the boat overturned near Vancouver Island on Sunday.
Stephen's mother Julie was rescued from the stricken vessel, Leviathan II, along with 20 other people on board.

His father, who had his own amateur photography website, described himself as a "committed Christian" who was "in constant awe at the wonders of God's creation".
Mr Thomas was a carer for 17-year-old Stephen who had Down's Syndrome.
The Down's Syndrome Association described the teenager as a "very talented young man" and a "gifted photographer", while his father was a "huge supporter" of the charity.

Christian claims he was refused job as a spy because of his faith
Tue 27 Oct 2015
By Antony Bushfield
A Christian man who claims he was refused a job as a British spy because of his faith is taking his case to the European Court of Human Rights.
Charles Storey, 44, underwent several interviews before GCHQ eventually turned him down for 'national security reasons' in 2009.
Mr Storey says this is because he told questioners "without doubt, if required to choose between his loyalty to his country and his loyalty to God, [he would] choose his loyalty to God".
A Bristol employment tribunal and another judge have both already rejected the Chess master's claims but now he's taking his allegations to Europe.
He is also alleging that his admission of taking drugs for a short time as a young man could be behind his rejection from the job.
The Honourable Mrs Justice Simler said GCHQ did not reject him on the basis of his devout Christian faith or his admission of drug taking.
It had been reported that Mr Storey is expecting a multi-million pound pay out.
On his blog he is thought to have said: "I am looking forward to recycling my discrimination pay-out of anything up to £5 million into developing Junior Chess through my 'The National Chess Syllabus & Bandana Exam System'."

'Right-hand man' of paedophile Bishop Peter Ball guilty of sex attacks
Tue 27 Oct 2015
By Antony Bushfield
The 'right hand man' of a bishop jailed for sex attacks on young men has also been convicted of a string of gay attacks dating back to the 1970s.
Retired priest Vickery House, 69, was found guilty at the Old Bailey of five counts of indecent assault on males - with one as young as 14 - over a period of 16 years. He was cleared on three further counts.
The court heard that for most of the time he had been a vicar in Berwick, East Sussex, and worked under Ball - who earlier this month was jailed for 32 months after he admitted molesting young men between 1977 and 1992.
It can now be reported that the pair targeted young men and aspiring priests through a Church of England scheme called Give A Year For Christ with four members abused by both men.

Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali attacks Saudi Arabia rulers
Tue 27 Oct 2015
By Antony Bushfield
A retired Anglican bishop has condemned the "unelected oligarchy" that rules Saudi Arabia.
Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali criticised an article written by Mohammed bin Nawwaf bin Abdulaziz, Saudi Arabia's Ambassador to the United Kingdom, in which he claimed his country is vital to UK security.
"What he doesn't say is that the rulers are an unelected oligarchy who subscribe to a Wahhabi interpretation of Sharia not shared by many other Muslims," said Bishop Michael in a letter to the Telegraph.
He added: "He says nothing about how Islamic jurists have discovered important principles of movement in Islamic law which have allowed them to take account of the common good of a community.
"He doesn't say how in the last 100 years or so, Islamic scholars have tried to limit the scope and implementation of the draconian punishments which are commonplace in Saudi Arabia."

New directory for evensong services to launch next month
Tue 27 Oct 2015
By Aaron James
A new website showing people where their nearest evensong service is will be launching next month.
choralevensong.org already has 350 churches signed up displaying their various evensong services, with every church in the country warmly invited to put their own on the website by the time the site officially launches on November 22nd.
It's hoped the directory will eventually encourage schoolchildren to visit evensong services, where they can see and hear Christianity in action rather simply reading about it in books.
It's possible the site will also be made into an app, however this is yet to be confirmed by its founder Dr Guy Hayward.
He told Premier: "It [evensong] really is one of the great cultural treasures of Britain and we need to publicise it and promote it as much as possible.
"Some cathedrals have incredible choirs that are paid proper professional wages to sing and they are truly trained professionals. It’s totally free - and even if you want to give a donation it can be hard to know where the donation box is.
"They do it every day, some of the cathedrals, and yet five people turn up, ten people.
"It's a gift. It's almost for the ears of God."

Vatican to remain firm on LGBT stance: "no grounds" for gay marriage
The Catholic Church will not make concessions for LGBT people in the church as the Family Synod concludes in Rome.
The divisive Synod lasted three weeks and discussed issues like sexuality, Communion and divorce.
Pope Francis said the Synod was designed for "listening to and making heard the voices of the families."
Following weeks of controversial debate it is thought that doctrine towards divorcees will be softened but there will not be change surrounding how the Church feels about homosexuality.

"God is not to be seen as male" says first female bishop in House of Lords
On Monday Rachel Treweek, Bishop of Gloucester, will make history by becoming first female bishop to sit in the House of Lords.
She will become a member of Parliament's 26 Lords Spiritual after the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, and the Bishop of London, Richard Charters, read her "writ of summons" outloud.
It is reported that Bishop Rachel rejected the fist writ because it referred to her as "right reverend father in God" and she changed it to "bishop" instead.
"God is not to be seen as male.
"God is God," she said in The Observer.

Mosque three times bigger than St Paul's Cathedral rejected
The Government has blocked an idea to build Britain's biggest mosque, three times the size of St Paul's Cathedral.

The 16 year battle has finally come to a head with the Government blocking plans by an Islamic group, with alleged links to fundamentalism, to build a mega-Mosque.
The Tablighi Jamaat group has been accused by some of being a gateway to terrorism, according to The Sunday Telegraph, however some experts say it is a peaceful organisation.
The group is a very conservative branch of separatists who do not think Muslims and non-Muslims should integrate.
The group proposed a mega-Mosque that would have three times the floor space of St Paul's.
The proposed site, near the Olympic Park in East London, would have housed around 9,300 faithful in male and female prayer halls, as well as accommodating a further 2,000 people in another hall.
The struggle has involved street blockages, racism accusations and High Court action.
The scheme was rejected by Newham Council in December 2012 when supporters were told the building was too big.

Christian charity in Nepal "nervous" as winter approaches, 6 months after quake
Sunday marks six months since the Nepal earthquake that killed 9,000 people.
CAFOD, a Catholic charity working in the region has been there since the 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit on the 25th April 2015.
It is estimated to have devastated the lives of more than 2.8 million people.
400,000 people are currently living in makeshift shelters or temporary camps in areas above 1,500 metres, where temperatures are likely to fall below freezing this winter.
Matthew Carter, from CAFOD, told Premier he is impressed with the reconstruction effort: "Seeing the way communities are running together of people perhaps that hadn't traditionally worked with each other, different communities coming together, it's been very uplifting.
"But much more to be done and particularly nervousness about the food situation."

Singapore mega-church found guilty of embezzling millions
Wed 21 Oct 2015
By Hannah Tooley
The founder of a Singapore mega-church has been found guilty taking millions in donations from the church.
It has been reported that Kong Hee, the founder and senior pastor of City Harvest Church, used donations to support his wife's singing career in Asia before helping her break into the US market for evangelisation purposes.
Kong Hee was found guilty with five other church leaders of stealing 24 million Singapore dollars (around £11 million).
The State Court also found that the leaders used another 26 million dollars (around £12 million) to hide the first embezzlement from auditors.
Presiding judge See Kee Onn, after he found Kong guilty on three counts of criminal breach of trust, said: "They were not genuine transactions because the accused persons controlled these transactions."
"Evidence points to a finding that they knew they were acting dishonestly, and I am unable to conclude otherwise."
Cases like this are rare in Singapore and church-goers had queued since the early hours to get a seat in the court.

David Cameron: "There's a strong case for change" to Sunday trading laws
Wed 21 Oct 2015
By Antony Bushfield
The Prime Minister has reaffirmed his commitment to a change in the law allowing large retailers to open for longer on Sundays.
Speaking at Prime Minister's Questions, David Cameron said there was a "strong case for change" as he maintained plans to devolve the power to councils.
If approved the change to the law would mean each area could decide how long large retailers can open for on a Sunday.
Currently shops in England and Wales with over 280 sq m (3,000 sq ft) floorspace are limited to opening for six hours on Sundays.
Ministers want to give councils the choice on their own local laws which they say would be worth up to £1.4 billion a year to the economy while ensuring high streets remain the "heartbeat of our communities".

400-year-old Bible encouraging adultery set to sell for £15,000
Wed 21 Oct 2015
By Aaron James
A 16th-Century Bible with a printing mistake telling readers to have affairs is set to be auctioned for up to £15,000 next month.
The King James is one of only nine remaining which says "Thou shalt commit adultery", missing out the word "not".
It is unknown whether the mistakes was an accident or deliberate, but it is believed to have been purposeful in order to get the King's royal printers - commissioned with manufacturing Bibles at the time - into trouble.
The printers, Robert Barker and Martin Lucas, were fined the equivalent of £30,000 for the error, deprived of their printing license and thrown into prison.

Bishop Alan Wilson: Government "should look very carefully" at its response to refugee crisis
The Bishop of Buckingham has told Premier the Church was right to publish its letter to the government urging it to do more on the refugee crisis.
Sun 18 Oct 2015
By Antony Bushfield
The Bishop of Buckingham has told Premier the Church was right to publish its letter to the government urging it to do more on the refugee crisis.
The Church of England has released a letter, signed by 84 bishops, which was sent to Prime Minister David Cameron in September, urging him to make a "meaningful and substantial response to the scale of human suffering we see daily".
Rt Revd Dr Alan Wilson told Premier he "didn't know" if publishing the letter would make any difference to government policy, and added it wasn't about bishops but instead "people in need".
He said: "There are all sorts of things we need to be doing to respond properly to this crisis.
"We were offering a challenge but we were also offering encouragement, to know there are networks out there, led by Christians very often, who are willing to help.

Record number of Bibles given out in 2014
Last year saw the highest number of Bibles ever distributed by Bible Societies around the world. Nearly 34 million Bibles were handed out, a six per cent rise on 2013.
Its 7.6 million full Bibles account for more than half of the total Bible distribution in the Americas, and more than a fifth of last year's global Bible distribution.
It is thought that this was boosted by the many thousands of Scriptures handed out during the FIFA World Cup.
Bible Society Executive Director Dr Rudi Zimmer, said: "Brazilians are football mad, and the World Cup was a wonderful opportunity to share God's Word with the many football fans who were celebrating the tournament."
Cuba was another area that saw an increase in Bibles. Last year 1.5 million Scriptures were distributed there - more than double the total distributed in 2010.
The Bible Society has also reported that more than five times the number of Testaments were distributed in Syria in 2014 than in 2010, before the conflict began.

Christian campaign group labels government counter-extremism strategy "flawed"
Christian campaign group says government counter-extremism strategy is a "challenge to the freedom of Christians"
Mon 19 Oct 2015
By Hannah Tooley
A Christian campaign group has criticised the government's counter-extremism strategy, labeling it 'flawed'.
The Prime Minister said people convicted of extremism will be banned from working with children.
David Cameron also announced powers to remove passports from 16-17 year-olds who are thought to be at risk of radicalisation.
In a statement in response to David Cameron's speech this morning Andrea Williams, Chief Executive of the Christian Legal Centre, said: "The government's Counter-Extremism Strategy betrays a dangerous blindness to the Christian basis of 'British values' and a naivety about the nature of Islamic radicalisation.

Prime Minister has "golden opportunity" to defend persecuted Christians during visit of Chinese President
Mon 19 Oct 2015
By Aaron James
A Christian advocacy charity has said David Cameron and George Osborne have a "golden opportunity" to speak up for persecuted Christians in China, as the country's President arrives for a four-day visit.
Andrew Boyd, from Release International, also said that the "world is watching" to see whether Mr Cameron and Mr Osborne would challenge President Xi Jinping on his government's oppression of Christians, which includes their imprisonment and torture, the destruction of thousands of church crosses, and the complete demolishing of some church buildings.
In the case of church crosses, the Chinese government has said it's removed them for safety reasons.
Churches in China must receive state permission to function, leading many of the country's Christians to worship underground.

Church of England slams Government's "increasingly inadequate" response to the refugee crisis
Church of England bishops have accused the Government of an "increasingly inadequate" response to the migrant crisis and called for at least 50,000 Syrian refugees to be taken in over the next five years.
The CoE has released a letter, signed by 84 bishops, which was sent to Prime Minister David Cameron in September, urging him to make a "meaningful and substantial response to the scale of human suffering we see daily".

Amid mounting public pressure to strengthen Britain's response to the migrant crisis on Europe's borders, the Government pledged to take in 20,000 Syrian refugees over the next five years.
The bishops write in the letter: "We believe such is this country's great tradition of sanctuary and generosity of spirit that we could feasibly resettle at least 10,000 people a year for the next two years, rising to a minimum of 50,000 in total over the five-year period you foresaw in your announcement.

It's been reported Asia Bibi, the Pakistani Christian woman sentenced to death for blasphemy, has been moved to solitary confinement over fears she'll be killed in prison.
Prison officials in the city of Multan, where Mrs Bibi is being held, told AFP: "She could be killed by any inmate or even a prison guard, so we have to be careful."
Another said: "We are concerned for her life."
Asia Bibi has been on Pakistan's death row for five years, after she was accused and convicted of blasphemy against the Prophet Muhammad.
She denies the charges, and her sentence has caused international outrage from Christian and human rights groups, including the Vatican.akistani death row Christian Asia Bibi moved to solitary confinement amid concerns for her life

Indian pastor shot dead
Sat 17 Oct 2015
By Aaron James
Extremists have murdered an Indian pastor in the eastern state of Jharkhand.
A close family friend told ucanews.com that armed gunmen broke into Chamu Hasda Purty's home in the district of Khunti last Monday and shot him dead.
No arrests have been made so far.
Chamu Hasda Purty, 54, was the pastor of Independent Pentecostal Church.
Jharkhand state has nearly the double national average of Christians, with around 4.5% being believers. The majority of them are from local tribes or the untouchable castes, making them a generally very poor section of society.
The state is completely governed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP Hindu nationalist Party, which has been accused of failing to adequately address hatred and attacks against Christians, and even encouraging them.

Christian Conservative MP leads party revolt on Sunday Trading
Sat 17 Oct 2015
By Aaron James
It has been reported that a Christian Conservative MP is leading a revolt against his own government's plans to extend Sunday trading hours.
According to the Daily Telegraph, David Burrowes is one of around 20 Conservative MPs who will break rank and vote against the government on increasing shop opening hours on a Sunday.
Labour has already signalled its opposition to the move, arguing along with trade unions that it will force shopworkers away from their family and religious activities, and deprive them of rest.
The SNP has yet to form an official party line on the issue.
Labour and the SNP, along with the dissident Conservative MPs, would theoretically form a big enough group to defeat the government in a vote on the issue within the next ten days.

TV and radio personality Chris Evans has revealed he's been having meetings with the Archbishop of York as he grapples with the idea of God.
The 49-year-old's struck up a friendship with Dr John Sentamu after the clergyman first contributed to his Radio 2 programme.
In an interview with the Mirror, the One Show presenter explained that he wanted to get to the bottom of what he called the "God question".
"I definitely believe in something because where does it all come from?" he said. "But I don't know what that was and wanted to go and try and find out.

"Just as there is no scientific formula for love... how do I know I love my son? I just know. And faith is the same thing."
Dr John Sentamu has previously appeared on a special edition of Chris Evans' Channel 4 Programe TFI Friday where he blessed the show.
Evans, has revealed his conversations with the Archbishop, ahead of the launch of his new book 'Call the Midlife' in which he attempts to stave off a midlife crisis.

As part of his research he visited a marriage counsellor, Alcohol Anonymous and a sex therapist.
His battle with alcohol has been well documented while he questions whether he's bad at marriage because he's gone through it three times.
But as he battles a potential crisis he says he's "really happy" with life and is more relaxed than he's ever been.

Thu 15 Oct 2015
By Aaron James
The Director of the Israel Bible Society has said a "spiritual war" is going on in the country amid continuing terror attacks from Palestinians.

Victor Kalisher was speaking after Israel was forced to deploy hundreds of soldiers across the country to support its police dealing with the incidents.
It also put up concrete barriers in some Arab neighbourhoods in East Jerusalem.
The latest attacks including a Palestinian man stabbing a 70-year-old Israeli woman, and another Palestinian man attempting to stab an Israeli policeman.

Both attackers were shot dead by police.
An Israeli has also been accused of committing a revenge stabbing on a Palestinian.
At least eight Israelis have been killed and 31 Palestinians since the beginning of October.
Of those 31, Israeli authorities identified 14 as terrorist attackers, with others being killed in clashes with police.
Palestinians have called the measures "collective punishment" that would make tensions worse.
While relations between Israelis and Palestinians are normally tense because of disputes over land, the latest attacks in October are a result of rumours that religious arrangements governing the holy site known as Temple Mount or Haram al-Sharif, which is revered by both Jews and Muslims, were to be changed in favour of Jews.
Victor Kalisher told Premier's News Hour: "I think that it is a spiritual war, it is really evil spirits taking over people, and it is the fruit of many years of hatred and so on that grew up. It is like a volcano, it's there and there and then it erupts.
"If the leaders have the wisdom and the mercy from God to overcome the feelings right now and tell people to calm down this would really help.
"I think we need to pray that the Spirit of the true God will overcome the evil spirits that are trying to get over the hearts of people, this could really help.
"And I think we really need to pray... that God would really watch over our hearts and protect us to be the salt and light because it is a really dangerous situation and we need to be a testimony of love and peace."

Thu 15 Oct 2015

Clergy at Portsmouth Cathedral have criticised the City Council, accusing it of being "mean spirited and narrow minded" on the issue of asylum seekers.

They published a statement after hearing councillors had passed a motion to ask the Home Secretary to remove the city as an area which welcome asylum seekers.
'Cluster areas' is the name given to towns and cities which agree to help cut the burden on London when it comes to housing people coming into the UK.
The motion stated: "This council acknowledges the chaotic and dangerous conditions that exist for civilians in Syria and elsewhere.
"It supports efforts by the government to provide aid to those displaced by violence. However it is concerned that any addition to the number of asylum seekers housed in the city will put an undue strain on already stretched local services. It therefore asks the Chief Executive to write to the Home Secretary requesting that Portsmouth be removed from the list of cluster areas."
In response, clergy at the Cathedral said: "[The council's] rejection of asylum seekers is mean spirited and narrow minded.
"The Cathedral has generous hospitality as one of its core values, and we are proud that this trident has always applied to the whole City. "
Speaking on Premier's News Hour, Canon Peter Leonard went further stating: "We're an important maritime place with people passing through.
"We've always been welcoming and open to people in need, particularly asylum seekers, so this flies in the face of that."
Councillors have defended the decision claiming it will ease the pressure on school places, children's services, social care.
When asked by Premier to the Cathedral's comments, the Council refused to comment.

Thu 15 Oct 2015
By Hannah Tooley
The Church of England has published its contribution to the debate on Sunday trading hours in the UK.

The Church has always stood against extending Sunday trading hours and says its opposition comes from three main factors: protecting vulnerable members of society, the balance of work and leisure and family time.
The Church of England says it is against proposals to extend Sunday trading hours because:
* We are not persuaded that the claimed economic benefits can be realised.
* We believe that the economies envisaged as a result of longer opening hours will be more than offset by the diseconomies caused by local variations - and that the idea of devolving decision making is either an economic disincentive or a sham.
* We do not believe that the protection for workers who do not wish to work on Sunday is sufficient to protect their need for family and leisure time.
* We are concerned that the minimal protection of smaller shops in the 1994 Act will be lost to the detriment of competition and consumer choice.
* We believe that extended shopping hours will damage community resilience.

The Church says its objection stems from: "our commitment as Christians, and as the national church, to the common good of all the communities of this country.
"We believe that a shared day of leisure for a critical mass of the population is a necessity if people are to be able to work together for the common good and that this will be damaged by further extending shop opening hours."
At present bigger stores are allowed to open for 6 hours on a Sunday, between the hours of 10am and 6pm, and smaller shops do not have any restrictions on their opening times.
The Church has stressed that it is not motivated by its own interest to encourage participation in Sunday activities but wants to build stronger communities and build social cohesion.
It states: "Sunday shopping hours are directly contradictory to the Government's desire to build more resilient local communities and to encourage social capital to take the place of the state in creating good neighbourhoods.
"It runs counter to the whole philosophy of The Big Society which the Prime Minister championed and which the Church of England supports strongly."
Those that want to extend Sunday opening hours say it will hold economic benefits for both the traders and those that work in shops.
However, speaking in April, Tony Ashcroft, from the Keep Sunday Special campaign, told Premier people not have enough disposable income to spend money on a Sunday and that giving people a day for faith and family is important: we "need to recognise the impact on people and find the right balance between the benefit of convenient access to services and the protection both of family life, and also religious observance for those for whom it is important."
The Church of England says that: "the fact that the common day of leisure in Britain is Sunday reflects the Christian heritage of the nation.
"For those who are not Christians, the protection of one day of the week as a time of shared leisure remains important."
The bill, the Cities and Local Government Devolution Bill, was discussed on Wednesday in the House of Commons.

Thu 15 Oct 2015
By Sam Hailes
The President of the British Humanist Association Jim Al-Khalili has said he's "envious" of Christians' faith.

Al-Khalili made the comments during a debate with Christian professor Alister McGrath on Premier Christian Radio's Unbelievable? programme.
Al-Khalili said, "I'm envious...of Alister. [Faith] gives you meaning. Things fall into place with your faith, whereas for me I'm still grasping and reaching to try and find out. I'm envious of your faith, but I'm nevertheless at peace at not knowing."
The scientist was also critical of fellow atheists who dismiss religious belief out of hand saying: "I've had other atheists say religious faith is just intellectually lazy. I'm not going to fall into that trap."
Al-Khalili, who hosts The Life Scientific on Radio 4 said human beings are "programmed to seek meaning", but "no one knows" whether a higher purpose to the universe exists.
During the debate, titled 'Who invented the universe?", McGrath said there are "multiple understandings" of what "humanism" is.
"Because there are multiple definitions and understandings of what human beings are all about, there must be multiple understandings of humanism as well. [But] 'humanism' is now used to mean an anti-religious viewpoint."
When asked by McGrath if "secular humanism" would be a better word to describe The British Humanist Association, Al-Khalili agreed: "'Secular humanism' is a much more honest description of what the humanist movement currently stands for...just to say humanist is not enough.
Al Khalili, who has been President of the British Humanist Association since 2013, even suggested that the special status given to "humans" in secular humanism may be wrong, saying "the danger is it can be seen as elevating humans above where they are within life on Earth. That somehow we are special. As a scientist I'm aware that humans are evolved apes. Humanism I think somehow elevates us into that category which really shouldn't exist."
Al-Khalili criticised the extremism he's observed from both believers and atheists. "This polarisation into I'm right and you're wrong, we know how much trouble it's getting us into around the world," he said.

Mon 12 Oct 2015
By Antony Bushfield
The Christian organisation Sat-7, which broadcasts across the Middle East, is said to be facing legal proceedings in Egypt after government intervention.
According to the group Middle East Concern, the broadcaster has been accused of incorrect registration of a TV channel, failure to hold licences for certain editing activities and failure to comply with regulations concerning live streaming of broadcasts on the internet.
Over the weekend, officers from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology's Censorship Department came to the studios to search the property. It's claimed they proceeded to confiscate cameras and other equipment.
Studio director Farid Samir was said to have been taken to the local police station but was later released after local churches intervened.
Lawyers on behalf of Sat-7 refuted all charges and attempted to demonstrate that the Censorship Department's report was incorrect.
The Prosecutor will now determine whether the case should proceed to court. It's expected the decision could take up to two weeks.
Middle East Concern is calling on Christians in the UK to pray for the situation.
In a statement it said: "[Pray that] a. Mr Samir and his family will know the protection of the Father and the presence and peace of Jesus.
"B. Mr Samir, together with other SAT-7 leaders and legal representatives, will know the Spirit's wisdom in all their interactions with the authorities.
"C. the prosecutor will drop this case, and that there would be no further harassment of SAT-7 or other Christian broadcasters in Egypt.
"D. disruption to SAT-7's broadcasting operations will be minimal, and that SAT-7 and other Christian broadcasters will have boldness and wisdom as they proclaim the Christian message and promote peaceful co-existence in the Middle East."

A Jesuit priest who was abducted in Syria earlier this year is said to have been freed.
Father Jacques Mourad was taken back in May with local Christians fearing Islamic extremists had captured him.
While reasons for his release are unknown, a source told AFP that he said Mass yesterday for the first time since he was taken.
Fr Jacques has been ministering to Qaryatayn's Syriac Catholic community for the past 12 years.
While over 2,000 Christians lived in the town before the war, none remain with Islamic State taking control of the region.
Speaking at the time of his abduction, his colleague Fr Nawras Sammour told charity Aid to the Church in Need: "We priests are fully aware of the risks we run, but we cannot do otherwise than remain alongside the Syrian people, both Christians and Muslims.
"In many cases we are the only ones they have to turn to.
"When I asked him if he was intending to leave, he told me that he would do so only if forced - otherwise he would remain with his people."

Priest kidnapped in Syria

A Jesuit Priest has been abducted in Syria, according to Aid to the Church in Need.
It has been reported that local Christians fear Islamic extremists have abducted Father Jacques Mourad who has not been seen since travelling with a co-worker on Thursday, when two motorcycles drew up alongside his car.
The charity says that for the past 12 years Fr Mourad had been ministering to Qaryatayn's Syriac Catholic community.
Qaryatayn is a small town around 65 miles southwest of Palmyra, which was seized by Islamic State earlier in the week.
Father Nawras Sammour, the director of the Jesuit Refugee Services for the Middle East, told Aid to the Church in Need: "We still have no news of him.
"We only know that he was abducted by four men, undoubtedly belonging to a jihadist group."
He described how Fr Jacques had welcomed refugees from Palmyra who had fled their monastery near the conflict.
Fr Sammour said: "He has always helped the Syrians and has welcomed a great many Muslims into the monastery of Mar Elias."
He said Fr Jacques continued preaching in the area even though there was a threat from extremists.
Fr Sammour said priests working in the region were aware of the dangers they faced: "We priests are fully aware of the risks we run, but we cannot do otherwise than remain alongside the Syrian people, both Christians and Muslims.
"In many cases we are the only ones they have to turn to."
The director of the Jesuit Refugee Service said: "When I asked him if he was intending to leave, he told me that he would do so only if forced - otherwise he would remain with his people."

Mon 12 Oct 2015
By Sam Hailes
People around the world have been remembering the Christian and British nurse Edith Cavell, who was killed by a German firing squad 100 years ago today.

Edith Cavell, from Swaddleston in Norfolk, was sentenced to death for helping at least 200 British soldiers escape German-occupied Belgium.
Her last words were: "I die for God and my country."
Ms Cavell's Christian faith impacted her work to such an extent that she indiscriminately helped both Allied and Central forces in the war.
The vicar's daughter was given a state funeral, with a statue of her erected near Trafalgar Square.
She was once a parishioner at Sacred Trinity Church in Salford, where a wreath has been laid in her honour to mark a century since she was killed.
Revd Canon Andy Salmon, the rector of Sacred Trinity, told Premier: "We know that her Christian faith was incredibly important to her. She was reading The Imitation of Christ in her cell as well as the prayer book.
"One of her famous lines, on the night before she died, she said to the chaplain who came to see her: 'Patriotism is not enough. I must hold no hatred or bitterness towards anyone'.
"We all have important things that we can learn from history, and she is certainly somebody who is an inspiring example to us of someone who puts their Christian faith, her love of fellow human beings, into practical action."

Oct 2015
Liverpool FC, one of the biggest football clubs in the world has unveiled German Jurgen Klopp as their new manager.

He is a popular figure in Germany because of his outspoken nature and the success he brought to former club Borussia Dortmund, where he won two league titles and got to the final of the European Champions League.
Car brand Opel has also credited him with turning around its fortunes in the country, saying his role as ambassador helped boost sales of its Insignia model by 35% in 2014.
He has even had pop songs written about him with eccentric media personality Matze Knop releasing a tribute titled 'I Wanna Be Like Jurgen Klopp'.
But what you might not know about him is that he is a committed Christian and is not afraid of making his faith known.
Prior to managing Borussia Dortmund, Klopp was in charge of another German club, Mainz, and after a defeat was known to have been asked by reporters if the 'football god' was against Mainz.
In an article about his faith, he wrote: 'In order to answer this question once and for all: although there is no football God, I believe that there is a God who loves us humans, just as we are, with all our quirks, and that's why I think he also loves football! But we have to score our own goals.'
But his piece for fussball-gott.com (soccer-god.com) gets deeper.
'All of these really likeable guys who I meet week in week out at matches or in some cases even in training, have one thing in common: they have noticed at some stage in their careers that there must be more to life than championship and relegation battles.
'They relate how a relationship with God has changed their perspective.'
In an age in which each successful new manager is praised for his novel 'football philosophy', Klopp is adamant that his faith is more important to him than the game.
In an interview with fr-online.de, he said: 'To be a believer, but not to want to talk about it - I do not know how it would work! If anyone asks me about my faith, I give information. Not because I have claim to be any sort of missionary. But when I look at me and my life - and I take time for that every day - then I feel I am in sensationally good hands.
'And I find it a pity if other people lack this sense of security - although they don't know it, of course, because otherwise they would probably look for it.'
He also relates how he had to grapple with important lifestyle questions even at a young age: 'At about 13, 14 years old, the question arose: Can I actually kick on Sunday morning, even though I was supposed to go to church?
'It can't be that I've got such a love and passion for the sport, only for me to be prevented from training for the sake of one hour of church on Sunday - especially since there is plenty of time in the rest of the week for faith.
'Since then I've realised that the matter is clear for me.'
From today thousands of Liverpool supporters will be putting their faith in Jurgen Klopp.
Klopp, it appears, does not put his faith in himself.

Tue 13 Oct 2015
By Marcus Jones
Controversial TV personality Katie Hopkins has declared herself the "new Jesus" and says she wants to call her new book the 'Bible of Katie Hopkins'.

Speaking at the Church and Media Conference in London, she told delegates that just as Jesus had followers, she has 600,000 people who follow what she says.
In an easily quotable question and answer session with journalist Torin Douglas, the reality TV star and newspaper columnist said: "I'm Jesus of the outspoken.
"I want to call my book the Bible of Katie Hopkins. Jesus had followers, I have 600,000 followers. There will be Judases, but I welcome Judas into my heart. I am the new Jesus."
Talking about her Christian upbringing, in which she was taken to a Methodist church by her parents, she said: "I went to Sunday school, my mum and dad are Methodist. I find religion to be at the heart of so much conflict. I get angry at religion in the same way people get angry at me."
She also criticised the nuns who taught her at school: "Nuns tied my hand behind my back to make me write left-handed. That's nuns for you if we're going to talk about religion. I'm not sure nuns are nice people."
While responding to the good that churches can do, she hit out at those who run foodbanks stating "if you give away free food people will always take it".
But while expressing her dislike of religion she explained she was hoping for a "free pass" when she dies as her husband is a Catholic.
Defending her right to offer a different narrative to the mainstream on social issues, she said: "I don't think I'm universally hated. I articulate things that people think but don't say. I'm a pioneer in an age of political correctness."
While many criticised the invitation given by the Church and Media Conference, organisers explained their reasons.
Spokesman Andy Walton told Premier: "I'd ask people to look at the Biblical precedence here. I don't think Jesus avoided conversations with controversial people.
"I also think that what we're offering here is a conference examining media for Christians and others who work in the media. What we're not doing is having this as a pastoral event. This isn't a safe space - it's a space to explore the burning issues that are facing Christians who work in the media today.
"We are convinced that for Christians to play a significant role in the media we can't just hide in a holy huddle. We have to actually get involved."

American female missionary shot dead in Haiti
Tue 13 Oct 2015
By Aaron James
An American female missionary who worked with impoverished children in Haiti has been shot dead.

Roberta Edwards, 55 and from Tennessee, led an orphanage and food centre which helped nearly 200 children.
According to Estes Church in Tennessee, which supported her ministry, Ms Roberts was driving to a petrol station when armed gunmen drove in front of her to stop her car, before opening her car door and shooting her dead.
Police are investigating and are yet to make arrests. The attackers' motive is still unknown.
Estes Church said in a statement: "Our hearts are saddened to report the death of our missionary Roberta Edwards.
"Roberta was a light to those in the community and dedicated to bringing hope to the hopeless.
"She knew that she worked in a dangerous setting, but had committed herself to care for children in Haiti despite these risks. Roberta has received her reward for her dedication to serving the Lord in Haiti.
"She will be missed in Haiti by her children, the community and friends. She will be missed here in the States as an encouragement and inspiration to us all.
"It is our intention to honour her memory by continuing the battle against Satan in Haiti and pressing on in the work of God's kingdom."

Thu 08 Oct 2015
By Antony Bushfield
Church services will be broadcast live online thanks to a new partnership between the Church of England and social networking website Twitter.

'ChurchLive' will see a range of events shown live on the mobile phone app Periscope, available for free to audiences around the world.
The Church said the broadcasts could be "the first taste of Church for those unfamiliar with church services".
It would act as an introduction to "the best of worship, preaching and prayer".
Revd Arun Arora, Director of Communications for the Archbishops' Council said: "This is a project designed to bring Church of England services from Malton to Miami, Middlesbrough to Milan and Manchester to Mumbai.
"Those who may not make it to church on a Sunday for all sorts of reasons will have the opportunity to be part of a service.
"The ability to join in worship shouldn't be restricted to geographical constraint. We know that Periscope users are a global audience and we expect that there will be as many watching services broadcast via Periscope as are physically present at the services themselves."
It wont be the first time church services have been broadcast on Periscope.
Earlier this year parishioners at St Radegund's Church in Grayingham, in the Diocese of Lincoln, were joined by another 350 people around the world for their regular traditional Sunday service after becoming the first to experiment with the app.
Julia White from Twitter UK, said: "Periscope gives people and communities the opportunity to live broadcast everything from on-the-spot breaking news through to individual reflections. It's great to see the Church of England taking the best of what they have to offer and using Periscope to show it live across the world."
Tallie Proud, Digital Officer for The Archbishops' Council of the Church of England said: "It could be someone too ill to attend, a family who want to 'attend' even when on holiday or someone who just wants to know what the church is like before they make the sometimes scary step of walking into the building for the first time."
The first service is due to take place on Sunday 11th October and features a service with Canon Andrew white, the "Vicar of Baghdad" who will be speaking at The Point, a Fresh Expressions church in West Sussex.
Future services planned include St Martin in the Fields in London and Beverley Minster.

Vicar finds 400-year-old Bible by accident at church

A vicar in Wrexham's found a 400-year-old Bible while he was clearing a cupboard at church.

Revd James Bray of St Giles found the First Edition King James Bible, which is thought to be worth thousands of pounds.
The Bible's believed to be one of only less than 200 still in existence.
It's missing a few pages, but can still be read as the words were printed on low-acid paper.
Mr Bray told the Daily Mail: "We didn't know it was a first edition, but we sent photographs to the National Library of Wales and they confirmed that it was... As far as we know [it] has always been here.
"We're keeping it safe at the moment, but we would like to have somewhere to display

Documentary Reveals 'Incredible Journey of Discovery' Confirming Biblical Exodus Account
(CN) -- A filmmaker who spent over 10 years investigating the reliability of the biblical Exodus story has concluded that the Bible’s account is in fact historically accurate, and has released an award-winning documentary that sheds light on his new archaeological findings.

Is the Exodus story in the Bible accurate? Many skeptics today dismiss the account as a fanciful myth, but the recently-released documentary “Patterns of Evidence: The Exodus” challenges that verdict with historical evidence uncovered during a lengthy investigation.
